Abstract

We illustrate how purpose-specific, graphical modeling enables application experts with different levels of expertise to collaboratively design and then produce complex applications using their individual, purpose-specific modeling language. Our illustration includes seven graphical Integrated Modeling Environments (IMEs) that support full code generation, as well as four browser-based applications that were modeled and then fully automatically generated and produced using DIME, our most complex graphical IME. While the seven IMEs were chosen to illustrate the types of languages we support with our Language-Driven Engineering (LDE) approach, the four DIME products were chosen to give an impression of the power of our LDE-generated IMEs. In fact, Equinocs, Springer Nature's future editorial system for proceedings, is also being fully automatically generated and then deployed at their Dordrecht site using a deployment pipeline generated with Rig, one of the IMEs presented. Abstract

Scenario-based testing is envisioned as a key approach for the safety assurance of autonomous vehicles. In scenario-based testing, relevant (driving) scenarios are the basis of tests. Many recent works focus on specification, variation, generation and execution of individual scenarios. In this work, we address the open challenges of classifying sets of scenarios and measuring coverage of theses scenarios in recorded test drives. Technically, we define logic-based classifiers that compute features of scenarios on complex data streams and combine these classifiers into feature trees that describe sets of scenarios. We demonstrate the expressiveness and effectiveness of our approach by defining a scenario classifier for urban driving and evaluating it on data recorded from simulations.

Abstract

Methods for the automatic composition of services into executable workflows need detailed knowledge about the application domain,in particular about the available services and their behavior in terms of input/output data descriptions. In this paper we discuss how the EMBRACE data and methods ontology (EDAM) can be used as background knowledge for the composition of bioinformatics workflows. We show by means of a small example domain that the EDAM knowledge facilitates finding possible workflows, but that additional knowledge is required to guide the search towards actually adequate solutions. Abstract

Software is so prevalent in all areas of life that one could expect we have come up with more simple and intuitive ways for its creation by now. However, software development is still too complicated to easily and efficiently cope with individual demands, customizations, and changes. Model-based approaches promise improvements through a more comprehensible layer of abstraction, but they are rarely fully embraced in practice. They are perceived as being overly complex, imposing additional work, and lacking the flexibility required in the real world. This thesis presents a novel approach to model-driven software engineering that focuses on simplicity through highly specialized tools. Domain experts are provided with development tools tailored to their individual needs, where they can easily specify the intent of the software using their known terms and concepts. This domain specificity (D) is a powerful mechanism to boil down the effort of defining a system to relevant aspects only. Many concepts are set upfront, which imposes a huge potential for automated generation. However, the full potential of domain-specific models can only unfold, if they are used as primary artifacts of development. The presented approach thus combines domain specificity with full generation (F) to achieve an overall pushbutton generation that does not require any round-trip engineering. Furthermore, service orientation (S) introduces a ‘just use’ philosophy of including arbitrarily complex functionality without needing to know their implementation, which also restores flexibility potentially sacrificed by the domain focus. The unique combination of these three DFS properties facilitates a focused, efficient, and flexible simplicity-driven way of software development. Key to the approach is a holistic solution that in particular also covers the simplicity-driven development of the required highly specialized DFS tools, as nothing would be gained if the costs of developing such tools outweighed the resulting benefits. This simplicity is achieved by applying the very same DFS concepts to the domain of tool development itself: DFS modeling tools are fully generated from models and services specialized to the (meta) domain of modeling tools. The presented Cinco meta tooling suite is a first implementation of such a meta DFS tool. It focuses on the generation of graphical modeling tools for graph structures comprising of various types of nodes and edges. Cinco has been very successfully applied to numerous industrial and academic projects, and thus also serves as a proof of concept for the DFS approach itself. The unique combination of the three DFS strategies and Cinco's meta-level approach towards their realization in practice lay the foundation for a new paradigm of software development that is strongly focused on simplicity.

In this article, we present our experience with over a decade of strict simplicity orientation in the development and evolution of plug-ins. The point of our approach is to enable our graphical modeling framework jABC to capture plug-in development in a domain-specific setting. The typically quite tedious and technical plug-in development is shifted this way from a programming task to the modeling level, where it can be mastered also by application experts without programming expertise. We show how the classical plug-in development profits from a systematic domain-specific API design and how the level of abstraction achieved this way can be further enhanced by defining adequate building blocks for high-level plug-in modeling. As the resulting plug-in models can be compiled and deployed automatically, our approach decomposes plug-in development into three phases where only the realization phase requires plug-in-specific effort. By using our modeling framework jABC, this effort boils down to graphical, tool-supported process modeling. Furthermore, we support the automatic completion of process sketches for executability. All this will be illustrated along the most recent plug-in-based evolution of the jABC framework, which witnessed quite some bootstrapping effects.

Abstract

Serviceorientierung ist ein zentrales Element zur Wiederverwendung in der Softwareentwicklung und die Modellierung von ausführbaren Prozessen aus Services (Orchestrierung) ermöglicht auch Anwendungsexperten, die in der Regel keine Programmierer sind, Software zu erstellen. Problematisch ist allerdings, dass eine große Menge von Bibliotheken und Services schnell unübersichtlich wird. Ein einsteigender Entwickler oder Modellierer muss sich trotz eventuell vorhandener Sortier- und Filterfunktionen zunächst langwierig orientieren. Dies legt die Idee nahe, die Orchestrierung von Services automatisieren zu wollen, um den Modellierer bei dieser Orientierung zu unterstützen. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit stellt PROPHETS, eine Neuimplementierung und Erweiterung der Synthesefunktionalität der mittlerweile inaktiven ETI-Plattform, vor. Umgesetzt wurde sie als Plugin für das am Lehrstuhl für Programmiesysteme entwickelte Framework zur grafischen Modellierung von Prozessen, das Java Application Building Center (jABC). Darin wird die Möglichkeit geschaffen, Modellteile als "Lose Spezifikation" zu definieren. PROPHETS führt daraufhin eine Synthese aus und schlägt dem Anwender mögliche Konkretisierungen vor. Darüber hinaus können mithilfe von Formeln in einer temporalen Logik weitere Anforderungen an die Synthese gestellt werden. Hierbei muss der Benutzer allerdings nicht die formalen Details von Temporallogik und Synthese kennen, da ihm natürlichsprachliche Vorlagen angeboten werden, die er mit seinem domänenspezifischen Vokabular füllen kann. Mit dieser Arbeit ist damit eine Experimentierplattform entstanden, die den Prozessmodellierer mit iterativer Verfeinerung seiner Spezifikation zum gewünschten Ergebnis leiten kann, ohne dass er sich mit den technischen Details der vorhandenen Services auseinandersetzen muss.
