Issues: Self‐change from alcohol and drug use problems is increasingly acknowledged in research. Despite the growing number of published studies, the most recent broad review of this dispersed field dates back to 2010. The present review narratively synthesises key findings from empirical studies and critically identifies research gaps and directions for further research. Approach: Following the PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews, a systematic search was conducted in multiple scientific databases, resulting in the identification of 56 relevant articles with explicit empirical results on self‐change. Key Findings: The scoping review presents findings related to: (i) methods and definitions used; (ii) the prevalence of self‐change; (iii) indicators of self‐change; (iv) the process of self‐change; and (v) population views on self‐change. Conclusion: The review highlights the significant growth in research on self‐change considering key themes as well as the need for a relational and time‐bound approach to self‐change in research and practice. Recovery from substance misuse is complex and requires an individual's desire and readiness for change. Specifically, for African Americans, additional factors such as social equity and access to culturally responsive treatments can complicate the recovery process. In this secondary analysis of a transcendental qualitative phenomenological study, researchers explored how eight African-American women navigated their change process in natural recovery. Researchers identified the following emergent themes: (a) focused on the drug; (b) engagement in risky behavior; (c) desire to be free; (d) Damascus Road experience; (e) plea to higher power; (d) geographical cure; (e) self-liberation in commitment; and (f) new associations. Phytoremediation is a sustainable way to clean contaminated urban soil, but selecting the right plants and designing communities is crucial. This study focuses on the vegetation in a disused steel plant in Chongqing, China, abandoned for nearly two decades. The goal is to reveal the plant community and succession patterns to inform the restoration of brownfield sites. This study combined the sample line and plot to investigate the vegetation and its growth environment in the Steel Plant. Information was recorded, including plant species, quantity, distribution, soil nutrients, humidity, and light. Cluster analysis categorized plant community types, and redundancy analysis examined the link between environmental conditions and plant types. The study found that: 1) There are 65 plant species (including 13 native trees) in the steel plant’s brownfield area, with Broussonetia papyrifera, Pteris vittata, and Debregeasia orientalis being the most abundant. The plants inside the plant were divided into seven groups based on species composition. 2) Soil moisture showed a significant positive correlation (Pearson index of 0.628) with plant survival, followed by a notable correlation with light intensity. 3) Environmental conditions partly influenced plant species composition and abundance variations. 4) 11 hyper-accumulating plant species were identified, focusing on three: the As hyper-accumulator Pteris vittata and the Cd hyper-accumulators Solanum nigrum and Debregeasia orientalis. The findings of this research will offer valuable insights for applying phytoremediation techniques in addressing contamination issues in brownfields within steel plants.

It is known that one of the main nowadays problems of subsoil use is the depletion of reserves. Every year many researchers pay attention on mining waste as a source of replenishment of the resource base. Disputes on the prospects of processing technogenic raw materials are relevant. The object of research is the technogenic neoplasms, which were the result of dredging and hydraulic processing of placer gold. The paper presents the results of assessing the prospects and places of application of information technologies, in particular, the analysis of Earth remote sensing data in the design and organization of work to involve technogenic placers in operation. It is shown that these technologies are able to increase the efficiency of work and reduce labor costs at the stage of preliminary study of potential development targets.Possibilities of detailing the infrastructure facilities of the mining and processing complex are considered. It is proposed to use the vegetation index at a non-traditional time for vegetation research in order to isolate coniferous trees on the formed secondary phytocenoses. An area assessment of the technogenic raw materials of the Kerba gold-placer cluster has been carried out. The analysis of the methodological approach based on remote sensing data is carried out. Aspects of natural vegetation restoration in the post-exploitation period are covered. Optimal combinations of raster data channel combinations for the study of the territory within the boundaries of the object under study are proposed.

Soil profile disturbance and compaction can have a medium-term detrimental impact on soil physical properties. We investigated the recovery of physical properties of disturbed soils on four abandoned skid trails in a deciduous mountain forest in northern Iran. The trails ranged from immediately after skidding operations (IAS), through 5 years and 10 years, to 20 years since forest harvesting. For each recovery period, mean values for soil bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, and rut depth were assessed for three levels of traffic intensity and two levels of slope gradients, as well as within the general harvesting area and compared to those in untrafficked control areas. Over the 20-year recovery period, skid trails with lower traffic intensity on gentle slopes exhibited mean values that were 16.1% (bulk density), and 3.5 cm (rut depth) greater and 9.5% (total porosity) and 32.7% (macroporosity) lower compared to undisturbed areas; on steep trails with higher traffic intensity, values were 43.1% (bulk density), and 13 cm (rut depth) greater and 30.3% (total porosity) and 64.5% (macroporosity) lower, respectively. During this period (over the 20-year recovery period), surface soil compaction showed recovery in the general harvesting area. These results raise serious concerns about medium-term resilience to traffic on forest soils and indicate the necessity to properly retire skid trails to avoid further soil degradation as trails age. While prior literature has largely focused on marriage effects during young adulthood, it is less clear whether these effects are as strong in middle adulthood. Thus, we investigated age differences in marriage effects on problem-drinking reduction. We employed parallel analyses with two independent samples (analytic-sample N s of 577 and 441, respectively). Both are high-risk samples by design, with about 50% of participants having a parent with lifetime alcohol use disorder. Both samples have been assessed longitudinally from early young adulthood to the mid-to-late 30s. Separate parallel analyses with these two samples allowed evaluation of the reproducibility of results. Growth models of problem drinking tested marriage as a time-varying predictor and thereby assessed age differences in marriage effects. For both samples, results consistently showed marriage effects to be strongest in early young adulthood and to decrease somewhat monotonically thereafter with age, reaching very small (and nonsignificant) magnitudes by the 30s. Results may reflect that role transitions like marriage have more impact on problem drinking in earlier versus later adulthood, thereby highlighting the importance of life span developmental research for understanding problem-drinking desistance. Our findings can inform intervention strategies aimed at reducing problem drinking by jumpstarting or amplifying natural processes of adult role adaptation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil microorganisms significantly influence the energy flow and material cycle of soil ecosystems, making them highly susceptible to environmental changes, such as those induced by mining activities. Studying the succession of soil microbial communities after mining subsidence is crucial for comprehending the significance of soil microbes in the natural recovery process following subsidence. Therefore, the soil properties, vegetation communities, and soil microbial communities of the subsidence area, as well as unexploited areas, were analyzed during the natural restoration process (1, 2, 5, 10, and 15 years). The results demonstrate that mining subsidence has a significant impact on the aboveground vegetation community, soil properties, and microbiological community. Following an extended period of natural recovery, a new stable state has emerged, which differs from that observed in non-subsidence areas. The total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen amounts may be key factors driving the natural recovery of bacterial communities, and total potassium and available potassium may be key factors driving the natural recovery of fungal communities. The natural recovery mechanism of soil microorganisms was analyzed along with the changes related to vegetation and soil physicochemical properties. The mechanism was explained from three perspectives, namely, plant-led, soil-led, and soil-microbial-led, which could provide a theoretical basis for the natural restoration of grassland ecosystems and provide guidance for the treatment of coal mining subsidence areas. Restoration of grassland ecosystems is essential for mitigating global losses of biodiversity and is typically initiated to foster persistent, long‐term increases in biodiversity. Yet, evaluating long‐term impacts of restoration on biodiversity is rare, especially across sites restored using consistent methods. Evaluation of restoration outcomes is particularly important for increasing predictive capacity in restoration ecology to determine the level of restoration effort that is required to achieve both short‐ and long‐term restoration goals. We conducted a multisite study that explicitly compared the impacts of no intervention ("passive" or "natural" recovery), low intervention (seeding native plants), and moderate intervention (seeding native plants and using fire management) at 32 restored prairies differing in the age of restoration (3–23 years). Grasslands with natural recovery have equivalent native plant species richness compared to sites with low and moderate restoration intervention, however, they have significantly lower‐quality vegetation, as measured by Floristic Quality (mean C). We found that managing restored prairies with fire maintains native plant richness over time and is correlated with higher vegetation quality and presence of seeded species. Seed mixes with a high mean C score are positively correlated with plant community quality. However, seed mixes with more species are negatively correlated with the proportion of seeded species present. We found that while the degree of restoration intervention has no effect on the number of native plant species, greater levels of assisted recovery are required to produce restored prairies that resemble high‐quality remnant vegetation and, especially, to maintain these successes over the long term. Up to 35% of global drylands have experienced degradation due to anthropogenic impacts, including physical disturbances like trampling and soil removal. These physical disturbances can result in the loss of soil communities known as biological soil crusts (biocrusts) and the important functions they provide, such as soil stability and fertility. The reestablishment of biocrust organisms after disturbance is determined bymany factors, including propagule availability, climate, and vascular plant community structure. The role of these factors in natural recovery may be intensified by the extent (or size) of a disturbance. For example, large disturbances can result in reduced propagule availability or enhanced erosion, which impact both the dispersal and establishment of biocrust organisms on disturbed soils, leading to a slower natural recovery. To test how disturbance extent impacts biocrust's natural recovery, we installed four disturbance extents by completely removing biocrust fromthemineral soil in plots ranging from0.01m2 to 1m2 and measured productivity and erosion resistance. We found that small disturbance extents did not differ in chlorophyll a content, total exopolysaccharide content, or soil stability after 1.5 years of natural recovery. However, the concentration of glycocalyx exopolysaccharide was higher in the smallest disturbances after the recovery period. Our results indicate that disturbances <1 m2 in scale recover at similar rates, with soil stability returning to high levels in just a few years after severe disturbance. Our findings align with prior work on biocrust natural recovery in drylands and highlight the opportunity for future work to address (1) cyanobacteria, moss, and lichen propagule dispersal; (2) rates and mechanisms of biocrust succession; and (3) the role of wind or water in determining biocrust colonization patterns as compared to lateral growth. This article analysed the 25–30 years of growth of dipterocarps forests that were logged under the Selective Management System (SMS) at three sites in Peninsular Malaysia to understand how management regimes affected forest stem density and basal area. The management regimes were (1) unlogged, (2) moderately logged forests that logged all dipterocarps ≥ 65 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) and all non-dipterocarps ≥ 60 cm dbh, and (3) intensely logged forests that logged all dipterocarps ≥ 50 cm dbh and nondipterocarps ≥ 45 cm dbh. The intensely logged regime is similar to the SMS practices in Peninsular Malaysia. This result showed that one-year post-logging, there was no difference in the total stem density and basal area between forests logged according to the two management regimes. Forest stem density decreased over time in all management regimes, significantly greater in unlogged forests (-15.1 stems/ha/yr, confidence interval (CI): -16.9 to -13.3). This decline in stem density reflected that mortality exceeded recruitment in all management regimes. Despite the consistent decline of forest stem density, the basal area increased over time, and the rate of increase in the intensely logged forest (0.22 m² /ha/yr, CI: 0.19 to 0.25)was significantly greater than the other management regimes. Our study showed that 30 years post-logging, the effect of selective logging remained evident. Both logged forest stem density and the basal area did not recover to that of unlogged forests, indicating the importance of enrichment planting and extending the cutting cycles beyond 30 years for the sustainability of dipterocarps forests. Background: There is a growing recognition of the importance of changes in drinking prior to the first treatment session (i.e., pretreatment change). A major limitation of past studies of pretreatment change is the reliance on retrospective reporting on drinking rates between the baseline assessment and the first treatment session collected at the end of treatment. The present study sought to extend previous findings by examining 12‐month treatment outcomes and correlates of pretreatment changes in drinking measured weekly during treatment. Methods: Data from a randomized behavioral clinical trial examining the effect of therapeutic alliance feedback on drinking outcomes were analyzed (n = 165). All participants received cognitive behavioral therapy for alcohol dependence, completed pre and posttreatment assessments, and provided weekly measures of drinking during treatment. Results: Results indicated that approximately half of the sample reduced their heavy drinking days by 70% or more and number of drinking days by 50% or more prior to beginning treatment. Further, individuals who reported greater consideration of how their problematic drinking affected their social environment displayed greater changes in drinking days prior to treatment. Changes in heavy drinking days were also related to relationship status, such that individuals who were single/never married were less likely to change prior to treatment than those who were married/cohabitating or separated/divorced. Conclusion: These confirm the importance of pretreatment change in the study of treatment outcomes, and suggest that interpersonal processes, including the appraisal of drinking behavior in a social context, may play an important role in pretreatment changes in drinking. Abstract Background The rock cut slope (RCS) could cause damage to regional ecological functions and landscapes and requires recovery. Biological soil crusts (BSCs) are pioneer and dominant colonizers during the initial recovery stage. To accelerate the natural recovery of RCS, the development process and influencing agents of BSC should be revealed. Thus, the area index of crevices (I R), BSC coverage (COV) and biomass (BM), soil weight (SW), and major soil nutrients [organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP)] content, collected from 164 quadrats on 13 RCSs in the mountainous area of west Sichuan Province, China, were measured, to explore the effect of crevice of RCS on BSC development. Results Soil OC, TN and TP on RCSs ranged from 18.61 to 123.03 g kg−1, 0.96 to 6.02 g kg−1 and 0.52 to 2.46 g kg−1, respectively, and were approximately to or higher than those on natural slopes. The OC, TN and TP contents in soils elevated unsystematically with recovery time of RCSs. BSCs on RCS distributed along crevices generally and firstly. During the first 13 years of natural recovery, COV, BM and SW ranged from 6.5 to 28.2%, 14.43 to 67.25 g m−2, and 127.69 to 1277.74 g m−2, respectively. COV, BM and SW increased linearly with I R on RCSs. The positive correlation between COV and BM and I R was insignificantly impacted by bedrock, slope aspect and altitude within the recovery time less than 13 years. COV and BM on RCSs increased significantly when the recovery time is more than 27 years. Conclusions Crevice on RCSs could be a major environmental factor which is conducive to BSC development and soil accumulation through creating a space for water and soil particle. Furthermore, with the increase of recovery time of RCSs, BSCs may grow and reach a stable state with the promotion of soil nutrients, plant growth and microbial activity. These results provide a development process of BSC that from inside to outside the crevices on RCSs. In the areas with stable rock strata and a low risk of geological disasters, purposeful improvement in crevice density on RCS may effectively accelerate BSC development.

The objective of this study is to review the scientific literature on natural recovery from alcohol. The study examined and compared the methodology, alcohol use recovery variables, reasons for recovery, and maintenance factors among studies of natural recovery from alcohol. Articles published in English between 2006–2019 were systematically searched through the PUBMED, EMBASE and SCOPUS electronic databases. Three reviewers independently extracted data using a standard form. After screening 412 records, eleven studies were selected and data extracted. All eleven studies were self-reports. Five of the studies used advertisements for recruitment and sampling, three studies had control groups, and seven of eleven studies were conducted in the United States. Participants tended to be older (mean age 55.2 years), educated (mean education 14.3 years), White (76.1%), and unmarried (64.9%). Roughly half were male (62.3%) and employed (54.1%). There were 13 reasons of natural recovery, most were health-related, finance-related, and due to negative personal effects (45.5%). The most important maintenance factor was social support/change in social group (36.4%) Most studies were conducted in the United States, among older, White men. Objective: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) can seriously impair an individual’s physical and mental health. However, unlike the majority of those suffering from substance addiction, individuals with IGD may recover without any professional intervention. Understanding the brain mechanisms of natural recovery from IGD may provide new insight into how to prevent addiction and implement more targeted interventions. Methods: Sixty individuals with IGD were scanned by using a resting-state fMRI to assess brain region changes associated with IGD. After 1 year, 19 individuals with IGD no longer met the IGD criteria and were considered recovered (RE-IGD), 23 individuals still met the IGD criteria (PER-IGD), and 18 individuals left the study. The brain activity in resting state between 19 RE-IGD individuals and 23 PER-IGD individuals was compared by using regional homogeneity (ReHo). Additionally, brain structure and cue-craving functional MRIs were collected to further support the results in the resting-state. Results: The resting-state fMRI results revealed that activity in brain regions responsible for reward and inhibitory control [including the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the precuneus and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC)] was decreased in the PER-IGD individuals compared to RE-IGD individuals. In addition, significant positive correlations were found between mean ReHo values in the precuneus and self-reported craving scores for gaming, whether among the PERIGD individuals or the RE-IGD individuals. Furthermore, we found similar results in that brain structure and cue-craving differences exist between the PER-IGD individuals and RE-IGD individuals, specifically in the brain regions associated with reward processing and inhibitory control (including the DLPFC, anterior cingulate gyrus, insula, OFC, precuneus, and superior frontal gyrus).Conclusion: These findings indicate that the brain regions responsible for reward processing and inhibitory control are different in PER-IGD individuals, which may have consequences on natural recovery. Ecological restoration has great significance on cut rock slopes, which are considered extremely degraded habitats. The development of moss–soil crusts on cut rock slopes as a critical pathway to ecological restoration in mountain areas has been poorly reported. A total of 335 quadrats were selected on cut rock slopes with formation ages between 0 and 60 years to evaluate the evolution characteristics of moss–soil crusts under various geographical conditions (e.g., aspect, lithology, and altitude) in the mountainous area of western Sichuan, Southwest China. The results suggested that moss growth decoupled from soil accumulation within the crusts and was controlled by multiple factors. Moss growth depended on lithology, altitude, and age, while soil weight was mainly influenced by slope aspect. The development of mosses on limestone was better than on sandstone. Moss biomass varied with altitude, consistent with that of rainfall with respect to moss development dependent on moisture. Furthermore, moss development under a semiarid climate was more distinctly impacted by moisture with altitude relative to a humid region, likely owing to the higher sensitivity of the mosses to moisture in the former than in the latter. Moss biomass increased with recovery time, while the rate of moss biomass development was diverse in different geographical areas. The vegetation developed rapidly in low-altitude areas (~1000 m above sea level), resulting in moss biomass increasing from 0 to 24.08 g·m−2 with formation time increasing from 0.5 to 1.5 years and subsequently being restricted by the evolution of higher plants on cut rock slopes, leading to an insignificant difference in moss biomass between 1.5 and 60 years. In high-altitude areas, when the altitude changed slightly (from 2024 to 2430 m above sea level), the moss biomass on cut rock slopes increased linearly with increasing age from 5 to 27 years. Influenced by the surrounding fertile soils and moss bioaccumulation, there were high levels of soil major nutrient content, especially the organic matter content, which reached 377.42 g·kg−1. More soils accumulated on south-facing slopes than on north-facing slopes. This study provided field data to clearly reveal the influence of geographic factors on moss–soil crust development in natural restoration processes in high-altitude mountainous areas. Participating in slot machine games is a growing phenomenon in Romania in the context of the development of this industry. Along with this expansion of participation are the problems associated with the abuse and addiction of these games. This paper explores factors associated with initiating and sustaining the process of natural recovery in the case of this category of addicts. In this context is the present research that aimed to determine the factors that support the motivation for recovery from abusive or addictive gambling in the case of slot machines players. In order to achieve the goals of this research, 21 interviews were conducted with players from the city of Alba Iulia and Sebeş. These interviews allowed us to gain a deep understanding of the motivations and life context of the subjects in which the problem was recognized and the recovery process began. The results obtained in the research showed that the impetus for initiating recovery came according to the results obtained from the participants' need to achieve certain personal goals in life, fulfilling social roles, significant changes in life, and the inconsistency between personal values and excessive gambling. Invertebrate communities inhabiting the grass stand were studied during periods of relatively high (2006–2008) and almost nonexistent (2015–2017) emissions from Middle Ural Copper Smelter (MUCS) (main pollutants: SO2 and heavy metals; the total volume of emissions dropped between the periods by 75 times to 3000 t/yr). In 2015 and 2016, strong weather fluctuations were noted; potentially, such fluctuations could negate the recovery processes that had just begun. Still, in the moderately contaminated area, recovery signs were registered both in the grass stand (an increase in the phytomass of forbs by 1.5 times and its share in the total phytomass from 56 to 76%, as well as an increase in the similarity of the species structure with uncontaminated areas) and in invertebrate communities (the abundance of sucking herbivores decreased by 1.3 times; the abundance of cicadae, by 1.6 times; and the similarity between the background and buffer zones in trophic and taxonomic structures of communities increased). No recovery signs were detected in the severely contaminated area. The results confirm the hypotheses stating that in severely contaminated areas, the disturbed state of meadow communities is stable; while in moderately contaminated areas, meadow communities recover relatively quickly. The dynamics of the species composition of mosses and lichens on the dead wood of fir and spruce in the southern taiga forests of the Middle Urals after the almost complete cessation of emissions from the Middle Urals copper smelter (Revda, Sverdlovsk region) was studied. Compared to the period of high emissions (1993–1994), the number of moss species in the immediate vicinity of the plant (1–2 km) increased from 1 to 27 by 2019, and the number of lichen species increased from 1 to 30. Nevertheless, the species richness of mosses and lichens remains reduced compared to that of the background territory, and the species composition differed significantly: many species typical for the background territory were absent, and species specific to the impaired territory were present. Ivorian classified forests have been highly anthropized by cocoa farming. In an attempt to provide guidance to the government on approaches to the restoration of the forest while respecting the aspirations of local populations, permanent plots were set up in the classified forest of Haut-Sassandra, and were monitored and measured for 3 years. This study was intended to analyze the evolution of the vegetation of permanent plots in the classified forest of Haut-Sassandra from 2018 to 2021. The results show that the vegetation evolves with the cessation of some agricultural activities. These plantations are colonized by pioneer species during the first three years of the abandonment of agricultural activities. Mortality rates increased by 477.59% and recruitment rates were reduced by 61.87% in regularly maintained plantations compared to their condition three years ago. However, the plantations with no agricultural activities and those which were not maintained but harvested had the highest recruitment rates of pioneer and heliophilous individuals. In sum, tree species could recolonize the classified forest of Haut-Sassandra if clearing is prohibited in cocoa farms. However, the populations could continue to harvest the pods from the cocoa trees which are already established in the classified forest of Haut-Sassandra.

Phytoremediation is a sustainable way to clean contaminated urban soil, but selecting the right plants and designing communities is crucial. This study focuses on the vegetation in a disused steel plant in Chongqing, China, abandoned for nearly two decades. The goal is to reveal the plant community and succession patterns to inform the restoration of brownfield sites. This study combined the sample line and plot to investigate the vegetation and its growth environment in the Steel Plant. Information was recorded, including plant species, quantity, distribution, soil nutrients, humidity, and light. Cluster analysis categorized plant community types, and redundancy analysis examined the link between environmental conditions and plant types. The study found that: 1) There are 65 plant species (including 13 native trees) in the steel plant's brownfield area, with Broussonetia papyrifera , Pteris vittata , and Debregeasia orientalis being the most abundant. The plants inside the plant were divided into seven groups based on species composition. 2) Soil moisture showed a significant positive correlation (Pearson index of 0.628) with plant survival, followed by a notable correlation with light intensity. 3) Environmental conditions partly influenced plant species composition and abundance variations. 4) 11 hyper-accumulating plant species were identified, focusing on three: the As hyper-accumulator Pteris vittata and the Cd hyper-accumulators Solanum nigrum and Debregeasia orientalis. Objectives: Trichotillomania is characterized by repetitive pulling out of one's hair, leading to distress and/or functional impairment. Long considered a chronic condition if left untreated (albeit with fluctuating intensity), there have been intimations that the disorder may be of limited duration in some people. Methods: A sample of 10,169 adults, aged 18–69 years, representative of the general US population, were recruited and screened for current and lifetime trichotillomania. Potential differences in demographic and clinical variables and lifetime comorbidities, between those with natural recovery from trichotillomania, and those with current trichotillomania, were identified using analysis of variance or likelihood-ratio chi-square tests as appropriate. Additional analyses using binary logistic regression were used to control for potential confounding differences between the groups initially identified. Results: In total, 24.9% of the entire sample of people with lifetime trichotillomania reported that they no longer had symptoms of trichotillomania and had never received therapy or medication treatment for it (i.e. they experienced natural recovery). Those who experienced natural recovery did not differ from those with current trichotillomania in terms of demographic or clinical characteristics, except that they were currently older. Natural recovery was associated with significantly lower rates of related comorbidities: obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, panic disorder, skin picking disorder and tic disorder. Discussion: These findings from the first epidemiology study examining natural recovery in trichotillomania highlight the importance of screening for and treating such comorbidities in patients with trichotillomania, in order to maximize chance of clinical recovery. Natural recovery of forest ecosystems after the termination of impacts caused by emissions from large industrial enterprises gives a clue to their sustainability mechanisms. However, the lack of data on different ecosystem components, natural zones, and emission sources makes it impossible to identify general patterns of restorative successions. This paper examines the distribution and abundance dynamics of macrolichens growing on birch trunks in the southern taiga forests of the Middle Urals affected for many years by emissions from the Middle Ural Copper Smelter. Two periods were compared: (1) period of intense emissions (1995–1997); and (2) period of almost ceased emissions (2014–2016). In the interval between the two studied periods, technogenic boundaries of all studied lichen species distribution have shifted closer to the smelter, and the abundance of most species increased in all pollution zones, including the slightly polluted and background zones. However, the frequency and abundance of the species still go down as the distance to the smelter decreases. The explerent species Tuckermanopsis sepincola demonstrates the opposite response: it disappears from background and slightly polluted areas reaching maximum abundance in the extremely severe pollution zone. Landslide and debris flows, a serious geological disaster, are common at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, and damage the surface vegetation. Like other natural disasters, landslide and debris flows cause a shift in local ecological conditions, which can have profound impacts on the habitat of non-human primates. This study investigated the characteristics of surface vegetation found within the debris field of a landslide and debris flow that occurred in 2008 at Gehuaqing in Baimaxueshan Nature Reserve ten years later. We calculated the surface area of the debris field to be 71672.96 m2, affecting around 312500 m2 of the known home range of a resident Yunnan snub-nosed monkey group. A field survey was conducted to sample the vegetation within the area of the landslide and debris flow after it had been allowed to grow for ten years. In total, 27 plant species were observed within the debris field, all classified as either shrubs or herbaceous plants. Gnaphalium hypoleucum had the highest importance value of the herbs (27.48%), while Leycesteria formosa had the highest importance value of the shrubs (17.33%). The Shannon-Wiener diversity index was significantly higher in the lower section and the Bray-Curtis distance was significantly lower, suggesting vegetation recovery has progressed faster on the lower end of the debris field. The speed of restoration within the landslide and debris flow area is important for the protection of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys living at Gehuaqing. A reasonable plan for vegetation restoration according to the composition of the surrounding community could mitigate population reductions in the monkeys and other local wildlife. The concept and application of probiotic intervention for restoring intestinal microbial dysbiosis induced by antibiotics in aquaculture are still in early stages. This study aimed to investigate potential responses of various recovery strategies, including natural recovery and probiotic intervention, in restoring the growth and intestinal microbial community of Penaeus vannamei following florfenicol perturbation. The basal diet (control, CN) was supplemented with florfenicol (FC) or Lactobacillus plantarum W2 (LM) throughout the entire feeding trial. Meanwhile, the basal diet was supplemented with florfenicol for 7 days, followed by a period without florfenicol (natural recovery, FB), or with live strain W2 (probiotic recovery, FM), for a duration of 35 days. Results indicated that dietary supplementation of strain W2, whether continuous or following florfenicol perturbation, along with continuous florfenicol supplementation, significantly enhanced the growth performance of shrimp. Early natural recovery and probiotic intervention did not induce significant alterations in microbial diversity and community structure. Florfenicol perturbation resulted in a decrease in the abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria in intestinal microbial community of shrimp. However, both probiotic intervention and natural recovery strategies gradually reduced the abundance of potentially pathogenic bacteria while increasing the abundance of potentially beneficial ones. The robustness of microbial network decreased during florfenicol perturbation, showed gradual improvement during probiotic recovery, and remained relatively low during natural recovery and continuous florfenicol supplementation. Moreover, the microbial community composition in intestinal habitat significantly differed under various recovery strategies compared to the control. Notably, the microbial community composition of intestinal habitat following probiotic recovery exhibited greater similarity to that of continuous strain W2 supplementation without florfenicol perturbation. In summary, dietary supplementation of florfenicol perturbed intestinal microbial community stability of shrimp, whereas probiotic intervention and natural recovery facilitated the attainment of new stable states by altering keystone taxa. Methods: Regular gamblers recruited from an online panel (N = 10,054) completed a survey of gambling, mental health and substance use comorbidity and attempts to reduce or quit gambling. The sample was weighted to match the gambling and demographic profile for the same subsample (i.e., past month gamblers) in a recent Canadian national survey. Results: 5.7% reported that they tried to cutback or stop gambling in the past year. As predicted, individuals making a change attempt had greater levels of problem gambling severity and were more likely to have a gambling problem. Of individuals with problem gambling, 59.8% made a change attempt. Of those, 90.2% indicated that they did this primarily on their own, and 7.7% accessed formal or informal treatment. Most people attempting self-change indicated that this was a personal preference (55%) but about a third reported feeling too ashamed to seek help. Over a third (31%) reported that their attempt was successful. Of the small group of people accessing treatment, 39% described it as helpful. Conclusions: Whereas gambling treatment-seeking rates are low, rates of self-change attempts are high. The public health challenge is to promote self-change efforts among people beginning to experience gambling problems, facilitate success at self-change by providing accessible support for use of successful strategies, and provide seamless bridges to a range of other treatments when desired or required. Aims: The area influenced by road construction is large, and measures to re‐establish vegetation in disturbed areas are routinely carried out to reduce impacts on biodiversity. However, goals of mitigation measures are often unclear, and the effects on biodiversity of mitigation measures is rarely monitored. We assessed the effects of different revegetation treatments (natural revegetation, seeding, planting) on vegetation development along highways, and on wildlife crossings of different age. Location: Highways in southeast Norway. Methods: We collected data on vascular plant species, vegetation cover and height, soil grain size and organic matter content, and compared the species composition, richness, and diversity of the restored sites with reference plots in the adjacent target vegetation (mature forest). Results: Our results show a significantly higher richness and diversity in restored plots compared to reference plots, and an increased similarity of species composition over time. Species composition was most similar to reference plots in naturally revegetated plots and seeding seemed to reduce both species and functional trait composition similarity. Conclusions: It is unrealistic that the defined target vegetation will develop on restored sites. Defining a realistic and achievable target vegetation for each road construction project in relation to land use, adjacent vegetation type and successional stage, as e.g., forest edge instead of forest, would be useful. This study aimed to identify alcohol use disorder (AUD) criteria that better characterized those who seek treatment and those who recover on their own. We gathered data from help-seeking (HS) patients in an alcohol unit and compared them with self-achieved remission (SAR) patients. The best criteria to predict HS were psychological problems due to use, physical problems due to use, repeated attempts or desire to stop using, and not being able to stop drinking. The best criteria to predict SAR were tolerance, craving, hazardous use, much time spent, larger/longer use than intended, and role impairment. The Pokuttia Carpathians are located in the south-eastern part of the north-ern mega-slope of the Ukrainian Carpathians, covering an area of 659.7 square km, which is about 3% of the Ukrainian Carpathians area. The forest area of the Pokuttia Carpathians is 39.1 thousand hectares, including 8.2 thousand hectares of the natural spruce forests or 21% of the forests of study region. The forests of the Pokuttia Carpathians where studied in the framework of the WWF-Ukraine project «The identification of the virgin forest of the Ukrainian Carpathians» to identify their belonging to virgin, quasi-virgin and natural spruce groups of protected forests. The main assessment characteristics and the successions dynamics in the spruce forests are analyzed based on the example of a permanent research plot in the spruce forest. Its characteristics are very close to the virgin forest in the con-ditions of moist pure highland spruce forests. The studied natural forest сorre-sponds to almost all the features of spruce virgin forests, except the area (less than 20 hectares). The field studies were conducted since 2010 with five-year intervals in ac-cordance with the method of second level environmental monitoring under the program "ISR-Forest". The assessment results on the condition and structure of natural spruce communities of the Pokuttia Carpathians are presented in the pa-per. An interactive map of the virgin and quasi-virgin forests distribution at the study area has been developed. The dynamics of the quantitative characteristics of natural spruce stands over the past 10 years indicates a little rate of the total number of trees decreas-ing. During 2015-2020 there was a significant increase of the spruce-trees number in the second layer, while the number of trees in the third layer is consistently low. The number of live trees of the first tier during the 10-year observation peri-od decreased significantly (by almost 24%). The trees are located in the stand as a biogroups. The crowns in the bi-ogroups ranges from 0.8 to 1. Forest herbaceous species (34 species) form a fair-ly dense cover. Their projective cover is 85% in the presence of more than 30 species. At the same time, the processes of vegetation transformation in natural spruce ecosystems are observed. The recent monitoring shows some decreasing of the indices at the category of condition, vitality, marketability and crown length of spruce trees and increas-ing of the indices at the category deadwood volume and variety of damages (compared to 2010). The reason is, first of all, in climate change. Spruce forests very sensitive to such changes. The study of the state and structure of natural spruce forests in the Pokuttia Carpathians in the dynamics provides an opportunity to foresee the future devel-opments of spruce virgin and quasi-virgin forests in the Ukrainian Carpathians.

Background: Depression is one of the prevalent mental illnesses and leading cause of global disease burden. However, most people with depression do not access treatment. Remission without treatment may occur in some cases of depression. This study aimed to estimate the short-term remission (natural recovery) from untreated depression.Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was registered on PROSPERO and conducted following PRISMA guidelines. EMBASE, PsycINFO, and PubMed were searched, supplemented with an additional hand search to identify studies reporting natural recovery from untreated depression. Study selection and screening were carried out by three independent reviewers. Methodological quality assessment of the included studies was conducted. Remission was defined as no longer meeting the diagnostic criteria or scoring below the cut off points of the validated tools as reported by the included studies. The data were synthesized using narrative summary and random-effects meta-analysis.Results: Sixteen waitlist-controlled trial studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The duration of follow-up ranged from 4 to 12 weeks with a median duration of 8 weeks. The overall pooled remission from untreated depression was 12.5%, 95% confidence interval (7.8, 18.0%). Due to lack of published data, we were unable to determine if the severity of depression symptoms was associated with remission rates.Conclusions: Short-term remission from depression without treatment is uncommon. Across studies, 8 - 18% of people remitted without treatment within 12 weeks. Waitlist control groups may not represent all persons with depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The long-term dynamics of β-diversity of small mammal (SM) communities in the vicinity of a large copper smelter has been analyzed during the periods of high (1990–1997), reduced (1998–2009), and almost terminated emissions (2010–2020). The results show that the β-diversity of communities increases as the smelter is approached, with the level of pollution playing a key role in the formation of community structure (up to 25%). Throughout the 30-year observation period, the background communities have been less variable than the buffer and impact communities; i.e., the more unstable the environment, the higher the community variability. Structural rearrangements in the impact and buffer communities in the period of emission reduction have resulted in the progressive divergence between the communities of background and polluted areas. Strategies such as behavioural substitution, self-monitoring, social support as well as planning and urge management can assist gamblers to limit or reduce their gambling behaviours. Not all gamblers implement strategies before, during or after gambling, even though the use of strategies is recommended by the gambling and treatment industry. Australian gamblers completed an online survey with follow-up (n = 411) to determine the predictors of intention to use strategies and the actual use of strategies. Results indicated 92% of gamblers attempted at least one strategy to stick to their limits over the 30-day period (median = 30 strategies, IQR = 11 to 56). Gamblers indicated a positive attitude towards strategy engagement and perceived themselves as having control over their use but the role that important others (e.g., family members) could play in strategy implementation warrants further examination. To improve strategy engagement, prevention and intervention programmes should target factors associated with intentions rather than focusing on behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundThe term "recovery" is widely used in the substance abuse literature and clinical settings, but data have not been available to empirically validate how recovery is defined by individuals who are themselves in recovery. The "What Is Recovery?" project developed a 39-item definition of recovery based on a large nationwide online survey of individuals in recovery. The objective of this paper is to report on the stability of those definitions one to two years later.MethodsTo obtain a sample for studying recovery definitions that reflected the different pathways to recovery, the parent study involved intensive outreach. Follow-up interviews (n=1237) were conducted online and by telephone among respondents who consented to participate in follow-up studies. Descriptive analyses considered endorsement of individual recovery items at both surveys, and t-tests of summary scores studied significant change in the sample overall and among key subgroups. To assess item reliability, Cronbach's alpha was estimated.ResultsRates of endorsement of individual items at both interviews was above 90% for a majority of the recovery elements, and there was about as much transition into endorsement as out of endorsement. Statistically significant t-test scores were of modest magnitude, and reliability statistics were high (ranging from .782 to .899).ConclusionsLongitudinal analyses found little evidence of meaningful change in recovery definitions at follow-up. Results thus suggest that the recovery definitions developed in the parent "What Is Recovery?" survey represent stable definitions of recovery that can be used to guide service provision in Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care.

Oil activity impacts the environment producing changes in its structure and function. Working with low-impact techniques on the soil and vegetation allows the functions of an affected ecosystem to be maintained or recovered more quickly. The objective of the work is to present the results obtained in the first surveys carried out in an area affected by a hydrocarbon spill in the form of a spray. Aspects of the ecosystem that gave evidence of a natural attenuation process of the pollutant were evaluated, without intervention or with low-impact interventions. Structural aspects of the ecosystem were determined by analyzing the physical-chemical properties of the soils, the seed bank and the levels of HCs present in the soil and vegetation, and of the functioning through productivity estimates (through remote sensors). The results obtained so far, show in the evaluated period, evidence of a natural attenuation process, which allows to conclude that, in events with the characteristics of the one described in this work, this tool is feasible to apply in arid and semi-arid environments, with minimal or no interventions on the ecosystem. Little is known about the successional dynamics of insects in the highly threatened tropical dry forest (TDF) ecosystem. For the first time, we studied the response of carabid beetles to vegetal succession and seasonality in this ecosystem in Colombia. Carabid beetles were collected from three TDF habitat types in two regions in Colombia: initial successional state (pasture), early succession, and intermediate succession (forest). The surveys were performed monthly for 13 months in one of the regions (Armero) and during two months, one in the dry and one in the wet season, in the other region (Cambao). A set of environmental variables were recorded per month at each site. Twenty-four carabid beetle species were collected during the study. Calosoma alternans and Megacephala affinis were the most abundant species, while most species were of low abundance. Forest and pasture beetle assemblages were distinct, while the early succession assemblage overlapped with these assemblages. Canopy cover, litter depth, and soil and air temperatures were important in structuring the assemblages. Even though seasonality did not affect the carabid beetle assemblage, individual species responded positively to the wet season. It is shown that early successional areas in TDF could potentially act as habitat corridors for species to recolonize forest areas, since these successional areas host a number of species that inhabit forests and pastures. Climatic variation, like the El Niño episode during this study, appears to affect the carabid beetle assemblage negatively, exasperating concerns of this already threatened tropical ecosystem. Background: Behavioral economics predicts that recovery from Alcohol Use Disorder involves shifts in resource allocation away from drinking, toward valuable nondrinking rewards that reinforce and stabilize recovery behavior patterns. Further, these shifts should distinguish nonproblem drinking (moderation) outcomes from outcomes involving abstinence or relapse. To evaluate these hypotheses, 5 prospective studies of recent natural recovery attempts were integrated to examine changes in monetary spending during the year following the initial cessation of heavy drinking as a function of 1‐year drinking outcomes. Methods: Problem drinkers from Southeastern U.S. communities (N = 493, 67% male, 65% white, mean age = 46.5 years) were enrolled soon after stopping heavy drinking without treatment and followed prospectively for a year. An expanded Timeline Followback interview assessed daily drinking and monetary spending on alcohol and nondrinking commodities during the year before and after recovery initiation. Results: Longitudinal associations between postresolution drinking and spending were evaluated using MPlus v.8. Initial models evaluated whether changes in spending at 4‐month intervals predicted drinking outcomes at 1 year and showed significant associations in 6 commodity categories (alcohol, consumable goods, gifts, entertainment, financial/legal affairs, housing/durable goods/insurance; ps < 0.05). Cross‐lagged models showed that the moderation outcome group shifted spending mid‐year to obtain large rewards with enduring benefits (e.g., housing), whereas the abstinent and relapsed groups spent less overall and purchased smaller rewards (e.g., consumable goods, entertainment, and gifts) throughout the year. Conclusions: Dynamic changes in monetary allocation occurred during the postresolution year. As hypothesized, compared to the groups who abstained or relapsed, the moderation group shifted spending in ways that, overall, yielded higher value alcohol‐free reinforcement that should reinforce recovery while they enjoyed some limited nonproblem drinking below heavy drinking thresholds. In 1982 – 2015, environmental impacts of commercial forestry practices were studied in the Jizerka experimental catchment (the Jizera Mountains, Czech Republic). Skidding the timber by wheelled tractors caused 10.3 km-1 of skid trails and the drainage density increased from 1.45 to 7.55 km-1. On the harvested runoff plots, not affected by skid trails, the loss of soil 0.007 - 0.014 mm year-1 was comparable with undisturbed forests. But, the eroded soil in skid trails reached 6.17 mm (61.73 m3 ha-1) by harvesting 23,882 m3 of timber (i.e. 0.25 m3 per 1 m3 of harvested timber). At the catchment outlet, sediment yield reached 25% of the soil eroded. Natural regeneration of erosion rills was supported particularly by the development of herbaceous vegetation. In 2003, twelve years after the logging, only 1.5 km (15 %) of active deeper rillswere still identified.
