OBJECTIVE: To develop and standardize a screening test of olfactory alterations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, descriptive and analytical study was done from March to August 2021 with a screening test with 4 essential oils (lemon, cinnamon, chocolate and coffee) applied to a sample of National Institute of Rehabilitation, Mexico City, of patients older than 18 years, to determine the behavior of the test and its ability to identify hyposmia-anosmia. RESULTS: Six hundred and thirty smell tests were carried out, 234 in men and 396 in women between 18 and 89 years old with a mean age of 43.42 years. Olfactory alterations were found in 22% (n = 139) and normosmia in 78% (n = 491) of the subjects. The proportion of subjective olfactory alterations in subjects with altered essential oils test was 12.9% (n = 18) and did not present a statistically significant association. CONCLUSIONS: This test is an option of easy application and access to perform hy-posmia screening in the Otorhinolaryngology consultation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
