Abstract: International audience; This paper discusses the main achievements of DISARM (Drought and fIre ObServatory and eArly waRning system) project, which developed an early warning system for wildfires in the Eastern Mediterranean. The four pillars of this system include (i) forecasting wildfire danger, (ii) detecting wildfires with remote sensing techniques, (iii) forecasting wildfire spread with a coupled weather-fire modeling system, and (iv) assessing the wildfire risk in the frame of climate change. Special emphasis is given to the innovative and replicable parts of the system. It is shown that for the effective use of fire weather forecasting in different geographical areas and in order to account for the local climate conditions, a proper adjustment of the wildfire danger classification is necessary. Additionally, the consideration of vegetation dryness may provide better estimates of wildfire danger. Our study also highlights some deficiencies of both EUMETSAT (Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) and LSA-SAF (Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis) algorithms in their skill to detect wildfires over islands and near the coastline. To tackle this issue, a relevant modification is proposed. Furthermore, it is shown that IRIS, the coupled atmosphere-fire modeling system developed in the frame of DISARM, has proven to be a valuable supporting tool in fire suppression actions. Finally, assessment of the wildfire danger in the future climate provides the necessary context for the development of regional adaptation strategies to climate change.

Abstract: Rigid rod-like polyimide (PIR) / flexible-chain polyimide (PIF) molecular composites, with 20, 40, 50, 60 and 80 wt. % of the rigid component, were prepared and their structure and molecular dynamics were investigated, in relation to those in pure PIR and PIF. SAXS, DSC, DMA, TSDC and laser-interferometric creep rate spectroscopy (CRS) techniques were used for characterization of nanostructure, glass transition and sub-T g relaxations at temperatures from 100 to 600–650 K. All the experiments indicated pronounced deviations from additivity in both nanostructure and dynamics of molecular composites. Mixing of the PIR and PIF components led in particular to a smaller nanostructure, down to formation of the nanoscale-homogeneous composite. Changes of the dynamic characteristics in two opposite directions and arising of large dynamic heterogeneity around T g were observed as a result of confinement/constraining effects.

Abstract: International audience; The PICOSEC Micromegas (MM) detector is a precise timing gaseous detector consisting of a Cherenkov radiator combined with a photocathode and a MM amplifying structure. A 100-channel non-resistive PICOSEC MM prototype with 10x10 cm$^2$ active area equipped with a Cesium Iodide (CsI) photocathode demonstrated a time resolution below $\sigma$ =18 ps. The objective of this work is to improve the PICOSEC MM detector robustness aspects; i.e. integration of resistive MM and carbon-based photocathodes; while maintaining good time resolution. The PICOSEC MM prototypes have been tested in laboratory conditions and successfully characterised with 150 GeV/c muon beams at the CERN SPS H4 beam line. The excellent timing performance below $\sigma$ = 20 ps for an individual pad obtained with the 10x10 cm$^2$ area resistive PICOSEC MM of 20 M$\Omega$/sq showed no significant time resolution degradation as a result of adding a resistive layer. A single-pad prototype equipped with a 12 nm thick Boron Carbide (B$_4$C) photocathode presented a time resolution below $\sigma$ = 35 ps; opening up new possibilities for detectors with robust photocathodes. The results made the concept more suitable for the experiments in need of robust detectors with good time resolution.

Abstract: The PICOSEC Micromegas precise timing detector is based on a Cherenkov radiator coupled to a photocathode operating in a semi-transparent mode and a Micromegas amplification structure. The first proof of concept single-channel prototype was able to achieve a time resolution below 25 ps. One of the crucial aspects in the development of precise timing gaseous detectors applicable in high-energy physics experiments is a modular design that enables large area coverage. The first 19-channel multi-pad prototype with an active area of approximately 10 cm$^{2}$ suffered from degraded timing resolution due to the non-uniformity of the preamplification gap thickness. A new 100 cm$^{2}$ detector module with 100 channels based on a rigid hybrid ceramic/FR4 Micromegas board for improved drift gap uniformity was developed. Initial measurements with 80 GeV/c muons showed improvements in timing response over the measured pads and a time resolution below 25 ps. More recent measurements with a thinner drift gap detector module and newly developed RF pulse amplifiers show that the pad centre resolution can be enhanced to the level of 17 ps. This work will present the development of the detector from structural simulations, design, and beam test commissioning with a focus on the timing performance of a thinner drift gap detector module in combination with new electronics using an automated timing scan method. Abstract: International audience; The rise of emerging contaminants in waters challenges the scientific community and water treatment stakeholders to design remediation techniques that are simple, practical, inexpensive, effective, and environmentally friendly. Emerging contaminants include antibiotics, hormones, illicit drugs, endocrine disruptors, cosmetics, personal care products, pesticides, surfactants, industrial products, microplastics, nanoparticles, and nanomaterials. Removing those contaminants is not easy because classical wastewater treatment systems are not designed to handle emerging contaminants, and contaminants often occur as traces in complex organo-mineral mixtures. Here, we review advanced treatments for the removal of emerging contaminants in wastewater, with focus on adsorption-oriented processes using non-conventional adsorbents such as cyclo-dextrin polymers, metal-organic frameworks, molecularly imprinted polymers, chitosan, and nanocellulose. We describe biological-based technologies for the degradation and removal of emerging contaminants. Then, we present advanced oxidation processes as the most promising strategies because of their simplicity and efficiency.

Abstract: International audience; The construction sector faces new challenges in order to provide smart, energy efficient and sustainable lighting environments for infrastructure, cities, buildings and the industry, in order to follow the 2050 low-carbon economy roadmap of the European Commission. In parallel, the Environmentally Conscious Smart Lighting (ECOSLIGHT) project aims to design training programs in lighting that will actively enhance employability and improve career prospects of lightingrelated professionals, while also help businesses to find the right competences they need to increase their competitiveness. In this paper by analysing critically the 438 collected answers though on-line ECOSLIGHT original developed questionnaire we were able to (1) understand clearly what are the needs of the sector for well-trained lighting professionals and (2) indent the training needs for future lighting professionals who want find jobs in the sector. Further, we could establish standard “job-profiles” for two of the most popular need lighting professionals: (1) Lighting Designers and (2) Lighting System Engineers.

Abstract: Timing information in current and future accelerator facilities is important for resolving objects (particle tracks, showers, etc.) in extreme large particles multiplicities on the detection systems. The PICOSEC Micromegas detector has demonstrated the ability to time 150\,GeV muons with a sub-25\,ps precision. Driven by detailed simulation studies and a phenomenological model which describes stochastically the dynamics of the signal formation, new PICOSEC designs were developed that significantly improve the timing performance of the detector. PICOSEC prototypes with reduced drift gap size ($\sim$\SI{119}{\micro\metre}) achieved a resolution of 45\,ps in timing single photons in laser beam tests (in comparison to 76\,ps of the standard PICOSEC detector). Towards large area detectors, multi-pad PICOSEC prototypes with segmented anodes has been developed and studied. Extensive tests in particle beams revealed that the multi-pad PICOSEC technology provides also very precise timing, even when the induced signal is shared among several neighbouring pads. Abstract: International audience; The PICOSEC Micromegas detector is a precise timing gaseous detector based on a Cherenkov radiator coupled to a semi-transparent photocathode and a Micromegas amplifying structure. First single-pad prototypes demonstrated a time resolution below = 25 ps, however, to make the concept appropriate to physics applications, several developments are required. The objective of this work was to achieve an equivalent time resolution for a 10 × 10 cm area PICOSEC Micromegas detector. The prototype was designed, produced and tested in the laboratory and successfully operated with a 80 GeV/c muon beam. Preliminary results for this device equipped with a CsI photocathode demonstrated a time resolution below = 25 ps for all measured pads. The time resolution was reduced to be below = 18 ps by decreasing the drift gap to 180 m and using dedicated RF amplifier cards as new electronics. The excellent timing performance of the single-channel proof of concept was not only transferred to the 100-channel prototype, but even improved, making the PICOSEC Micromegas detector more suitable for large-area experiments in need of detectors with high time resolutions.

Abstract: We perform a homogeneous analysis of an unprecedented set of spatially resolved scaling relations (SRs) between ISM components and other properties in the range of scales 0.3-3.4 kpc. We also study some ratios: dust-to-stellar, dust-to-gas, and dust-to-metal. We use a sample of 18 large, spiral, face-on DustPedia galaxies. All the SRs are moderate/strong correlations except the dust-HI SR that does not exist or is weak for most galaxies. The SRs do not have a universal form but each galaxy is characterized by distinct correlations, affected by local processes and galaxy peculiarities. The SRs hold starting from 0.3 kpc, and if a breaking down scale exists it is < 0.3 kpc. By evaluating all galaxies at 3.4 kpc, differences due to peculiarities of individual galaxies are cancelled out and the corresponding SRs are consistent with those of whole galaxies. By comparing subgalactic and global scales, the most striking result emerges from the SRs involving ISM components: the dust-total gas SR is a good correlation at all scales, while the dust-H2 and dust-HI SRs are good correlations at subkpc/kpc and total scales, respectively. For the other explored SRs, there is a good agreement between small and global scales and this may support the picture where the main physical processes regulating the properties and evolution of galaxies occur locally. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis of self-regulation of the SF process. The analysis of subgalactic ratios shows that they are consistent with those derived for whole galaxies, from low to high z, supporting the idea that also these ratios could be set by local processes. Our results highlight the heterogeneity of galaxy properties and the importance of resolved studies on local galaxies in the context of galaxy evolution. Abstract: Mining operations can drastically affect the stability of nearby areas. A representative case for this has been the Mavropigi mine, a part of an open-pit lignite mining complex in northwestern Greece. Mavropigi is a vast excavation that has reached 150 m depth and has posed severe challenges and stability issues that caused problems in the area. In 2010, noteworthy surface tension cracks appeared near the excavation, leading to extensive monitoring and countermeasures, while various studies were conducted. The present work aims to revisit the case study of Mavropigi from a different than the previous perspectives. Previous studies were based only on continuum approaches, thus understating or ignoring the effect of discontinuities. Nevertheless, the area has an intense tectonic past and faults that interact with soil movements. In this work, advanced, discontinuous numerical modelling through the distinct element method was used to understand better the role of slope fault interaction in the case study of Mavropigi and assess the faults’ effect on the area’s response. The results emphasised the influence of faults on ground movements. The fault’s existence increases the impact of the mine operations on the surrounding area significantly and intensifies the possibility of structural damage in nearby constructions. The analysis confirms that the open-pit mine’s effect on the surrounding area can be amplified under complex geological conditions, in this case, the presence of faults nearly parallel to the slope inclination.

Abstract: We extend the applicability of the popular interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method discretizing advection-diffusion-reaction problems to meshes comprising extremely general, essentially arbitrarily-shaped element shapes. In particular, our analysis allows for curved element shapes, without the use of non-linear elemental maps. The feasibility of the method relies on the definition of a suitable choice of the discontinuity penalization, which turns out to be explicitly dependent on the particular element shape, but essentially independent on small shape variations. This is achieved upon proving extensions of classical trace and Markov-type inverse estimates to arbitrary element shapes. A further new H 1 − L 2 H^1-L_2 -type inverse estimate on essentially arbitrary element shapes enables the proof of inf-sup stability of the method in a streamline-diffusion-like norm. These inverse estimates may be of independent interest. A priori error bounds for the resulting method are given under very mild structural assumptions restricting the magnitude of the local curvature of element boundaries. Abstract: A comprehensive theoretical analysis of end-fire coupling between dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton and rib/wire silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides is presented. Simulations are based on the 3-D vector finite element method. The geometrical parameters of the interface are varied in order to identify the ones leading to optimum performance, i.e., maximum coupling efficiency. Fabrication tolerances about the optimum parameter values are also assessed. In addition, the effect of a longitudinal metallic stripe gap on coupling efficiency is quantified, since such gaps have been observed in fabricated structures. We show 7-nm thermo-optical tuning of a plasmonic racetrack-resonator with less than 3.3 mW required electrical power and verify error-free 10-Gb/s transmission through a 60-mu m-long dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide. Abstract: With metal stripes being intrinsic components of plasmonic waveguides, plasmonics provides a "naturally" energy-efficient platform for merging broadband optical links with intelligent electronic processing, instigating a great promise for low-power and small-footprint active functional circuitry. The first active Dielectric-Loaded Surface Plasmon Polariton (DLSPP) thermo-optic (TO) switches with successful performance in single-channel 10 Gb/s data traffic environments have led the inroad towards bringing low-power active plasmonics in practical traffic applications. In this article, we introduce active plasmonics into Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) switching applications, using the smallest TO DLSPP-based Mach-Zehnder interferometric switch reported so far and showing its successful performance in 4310 Gb/s low-power and fast switching operation. The demonstration of the WDM-enabling characteristics of active plasmonic circuits with an ultra-low power 3 response time product represents a crucial milestone in the development of active plasmonics towards real telecom and datacom applications, where low-energy and fast TO operation with small-size circuitry is targeted. Abstract: International audience; We report the first experimental performance evaluation of a 75-mu m-long plasmonic multimode interference switch that is hetero-integrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform, operating with 10-Gb/s data signals. The switch exhibits a 2.9-mu s response time and 44.5% modulation depth, while the extinction ratio between the ports alters from 5.4 to -1.5 dB for 35-mW electrical (switching) power. Error-free performance was achieved.

Abstract: In this work, we address the problem of creating a 3D dynamic atlas of the vocal tract that captures the dynamics of the articulators in all three dimensions in order to create a global speaker model independent of speaker-specific characteristics. The core steps of the proposed method are the temporal alignment of the real-time MR images acquired in several sagittal planes and their combination with adaptive kernel regression. As a preprocessing step, a reference space was created to be used in order to remove anatomical information of the speakers and keep only the variability in speech production for the construction of the atlas. The adaptive kernel regression makes the choice of atlas time points independently of the time points of the frames that are used as an input for the construction. The evaluation of this atlas construction method was made by mapping two new speakers to the atlas and by checking how similar the resulting mapped images are. The use of the atlas helps in reducing subject variability. The results show that the use of the proposed atlas can capture the dynamic behavior of the articulators and is able to generalize the speech production process by creating a universal-speaker reference space.

Abstract: Classical interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) methods for diffusion problems require a number of assumptions on the local variation of mesh-size, polynomial degree, and of the diffusion coefficient to determine the values of the, so-called, discontinuity-penalization parameter and/or to perform error analysis. Variants of IPDG methods involving weighted averages of the gradient of the approximate solution have been proposed in the context of high-contrast diffusion coefficients to mitigate the dependence of the contrast in the stability and in the error analysis. Here, we present a new IPDG method, involving carefully constructed weighted averages of the gradient of the approximate solution, which is shown to be robust even for the most extreme simultaneous local mesh, polynomial degree and diffusion coefficient variation scenarios, without resulting in unreasonably large penalization. The new method, henceforth termed as \emph{robust IPDG} (RIPDG), offers typically significantly better conditioning than the standard IPDG method when applied to scenarios with strong mesh/polynomial degree/diffusion local variation. On the other hand, when using uniform meshes, constant polynomial degree and for problems with constant diffusion coefficients, the RIPDG method is identical to the classical IPDG. Numerical experiments indicate the favourable performance of the new RIPDG method over the classical version in terms of conditioning and error.

Abstract: 63 p. Interest in cities is growing again in Europe. Theories of "growth poles" forgotten since the 1960s re-emerge, although in different form, without the idea of building new cities in the desert. Metropolitanisation, although sometimes difficult to grasp empirically, is recognized as a post-fordist phenomena, with a gain of the importance of large cities, linked to the increasing need for size-based agglomeration effect in the global, networked knowledge economy. And European policy makers are once again discussing the need of and the form for new urban policies at European (as witnessed by the above quote), but also at national scale. From the outset, this project has had two, complementary, but not always easily reconcilable orientations: provide a broad overview of the current and future issues relevant to urban development in all of Europe, advance scientifically beyond the established and well-known data and analyses, provide innovative research. As this report was elaborated in parallel to the new State of European Cities report to be published by DG Regio, we also aimed at complementarity with that report, not wanting to repeat the same analyses based on the same data. In this project, we, therefore, worked in three parallel strands. First, all teams went through the current literature to extract the knowledge about trends, perspectives and, most importantly, driving forces for urban development in their thematic fields. Second, each of the teams focused on one or two innovative empirical research questions, generally tapping new data sources. Finally, our scenario team has taken the work of the other teams, and substantially augmented it through additional literature review, aiming at covering an even larger horizon and to provide a complete knowledge base on urban development, necessary for integrated prospective thinking. On this basis the scenarios were developed. The structure of the report reflects these three strands, adding a fourth, new strand, which consists in an assessment of the current national policy visions on urban issues across Europe. Details of all the literature reviews and analyses are presented in the scientific report.

Abstract: We present a generalisation of the charged C-metric conformally coupled with a scalar field in the presence of a cosmological constant. The solution is asymptotically flat or a constant curvature spacetime. The spacetime metric has the geometry of a usual charged C-metric with cosmological constant, where the mass and charge are equal. When the cosmological constant is absent it is found that the scalar field only blows up at the angular pole of the event horizon. The presence of the cosmological constant can generically render the scalar field regular where the metric is regular, pushing the singularity beyond the event horizon. For certain cases of enhanced acceleration with a negative cosmological constant, the conical singularity disappears all together and the scalar field is everywhere regular. Abstract: Our previous experiences with incorporation of polyoxometalates (POMs) ill different substrates have been very successful, because new nanocomposites with better conductive, catalytical and biochemical characteristics have been obtained. The results of intercalation of different mass% of ammonium decavanadate (ADV) in Al-pillared interlayered clays (Al-PILCs) are presented. The Al-PILCs were prepared using natural raw material, bentonite, containing a high percentage of montmorillonite (MM). Synthesis of ADV has been described in a previous paper. The structure of ADV hexahydrate was determined at low temperature, 100 K. A kappa refinement was performed to estimate the atomic charges. A sol-gel procedure was applied to obtain Al-PILCs composite intercalated with ADV hexahydrate (from 2 to 5 mass% of ADV). Structure and morphological properties of the new material, a nanocomposite of Al-PILCs-ADV, were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). To understand better how ADV is incorporated in the MM substrate, specific surface areas, pore structures and pore distributions were determined. Electrical and dielectric properties of the new materials were investigated by thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDCs) and broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite was found to increase, in relation to MM, by intercalating with a small amount of ADV. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract: A complete study of structure and molecular dynamics was performed for a series of rigid rodlike polyimide (PIR)/flexible-chain polyimide (PIF) molecular composites, with 0, 20, 40, 50, 60, 80, and 100 wt% of the rigid component. The PIR and PIF were synthesized from 3,3′4,4′-biphenyl-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and 1,4-phenylenediamine or 4,4′-oxydianiline, respectively. Small-angle x-ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, laser-interferometric creep rate spectroscopy, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, and thermally stimulated depolarization currents techniques were used for overall characterization of nanostructure, glass transition, and sub-T g relaxations. The experiments were carried out, on the whole, at temperatures ranging from 100 to 660K and frequencies ranging from 10−2 to 106 Hz. The above models have been Integrated in a simulation platform able to represent the steady state and dynamic behavior of three phase networks. Abstract: Metric learning involves learning a discriminative representation such that embeddings of similar classes are encouraged to be close, while embeddings of dissimilar classes are pushed far apart. State-of-the-art methods focus mostly on sophisticated loss functions or mining strategies. On the one hand, metric learning losses consider two or more examples at a time. On the other hand, modern data augmentation methods for classification consider two or more examples at a time. The combination of the two ideas is under-studied. In this work, we aim to bridge this gap and improve representations using mixup, which is a powerful data augmentation approach interpolating two or more examples and corresponding target labels at a time. This task is challenging because unlike classification, the loss functions used in metric learning are not additive over examples, so the idea of interpolating target labels is not straightforward. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to investigate mixing both examples and target labels for deep metric learning. We develop a generalized formulation that encompasses existing metric learning loss functions and modify it to accommodate for mixup, introducing Metric Mix, or Metrix. We also introduce a new metric - utilization, to demonstrate that by mixing examples during training, we are exploring areas of the embedding space beyond the training classes, thereby improving representations. To validate the effect of improved representations, we show that mixing inputs, intermediate representations or embeddings along with target labels significantly outperforms state-of-the-art metric learning methods on four benchmark deep metric learning datasets., Comment: Accepted to ICLR 2022

Abstract: International audience; During the last 10 years, the volume of global data has risen more than tenfold. The commercial rise of cloud computing eased the process of storing, processing and managing big data. Recently, the cloud evolved with the emergence of serverless computing platforms that offer an even more abstracted service model. The elasticity of cloud computing creates significant optimization problems, which can be tackled either with a single objective, or as multi-objective opimization problems (MOO). When it comes to data management, the two main MOO problems in a cloud computing environment are query optimization and task scheduling. Some of the techniques used for solving MOO problems in the cloud are the weighted sum model, mathematical-programming based algorithms and genetic algorithms. We propose the presentation of a tutorial that will underline the main MOO problems of a cloud computing environment in regards to data management, and evaluate the use of serverless computing for such problems. The tutorial will offer the audience a better understanding of current MOO challenges and applications in the cloud, while also giving them an overview of different solutions to such problems and the techniques that can be used for solving them. * The supervisors' names are included in alphabetical order, both contributed equally.

Microgrids are Low Voltage distribution networks comprising various distributed generators (DG), storage devices and controllable loads that can operate interconnected or isolated from the main distribution grid, as a controlled entity. This paper describes the main functions of the Microgrid Central Controller required for the optimization of Microgrid operation its interconnected operation. This is achieved by maximizing its value, i.e. optimizing production of the local DGs and power exchanges with the main distribution grid.

Abstract: International audience; The interconnection of small, modular generation and storage technologies at the MV and LV distribution level have the potential to significantly impact power system performance. In this paper models of the main micro-generation sources are described. In particular, the models of Microturbines, Fuel Cells, Photovoltaic Systems and Wind Turbines, are described. In addition basic models of their power electronic interfaces are given. The integration of the above models in a steady state and dynamic simulation tool, which is developed in the framework of the EU funded MICROGRIDS project, will provide a simulation test platform, which will be necessary to define and evaluate the developed operational and control strategies.

Abstract: An overview of recent developments regarding the fabrication and structure of thin silicon dioxide films with embedded nanocrystals through ultra-low-energy ion-beam-synthesis (ULE-IBS) is presented. Advances in fabrication, increased understanding of structure formation processes and ways to control them allow for the fabrication of reproducible and attractive silicon-nanocrystal memory devices for a wide-range of memory applications as herein demonstrated in the case of low-voltage EEPROM-like applications. Abstract: International audience; This paper presents the objectives and the research work carried out in the frame of the ANEMOS project on short-term wind power forecasting. The aim of the project is to develop accurate models that substantially outperform current state-of-the-art methods, for onshore and offshore wind power forecasting, exploiting both statistical and physical modeling approaches. The project focus on prediction horizons up to 48 hours ahead and investigates predictability of wind for higher horizons up to 7 days ahead useful i.e. for maintenance scheduling. Emphasis is given on the integration of highresolution meteorological forecasts. For the offshore case, marine meteorology is considered as well as information by satellite-radar images. An integrated software platform, ‘ANEMOS', is developed to host the various models. This system will be installed by several utilities for on-line operation at onshore and offshore wind farms for prediction at a local, regional and national scale. The applications include different terrain types and wind climates, on- and offshore cases, and interconnected or island grids. The on-line operation by the utilities will allow validation of the models and an analysis of the value of wind prediction for a competitive integration of wind energy in the developing liberalized electricity markets in the EU.

Abstract: International audience; Motion extracted from the carotid artery wall provides unique information for vascular health evaluation. Carotid artery longitudinal wall motion corresponds to the multiphasic arterial wall excursion in the direction parallel to blood flow during the cardiac cycle. While this motion phenomenon has been well characterized, there is a general lack of awareness regarding its implications for vascular health assessment or even basic vascular physiology. In the last decade, novel estimation strategies and clinical investigations have greatly advanced our understanding of the bi-axial behavior of the carotid artery, necessitating an up-to-date review to summarize and classify the published literature in collaboration with technical and clinical experts in the field. Within this review, the state-of-the-art methodologies for carotid wall motion estimation are described, and the observed relationships between longitudinal motion-derived indices and vascular health are reported. The vast number of studies describing the longitudinal motion pattern in plaque-free arteries, with its putative application to cardiovascular disease prediction, point to the need for characterizing the added value and applicability of longitudinal motion beyond established biomarkers. To this aim, the main purpose of this review was to provide a strong base of theoretical knowledge, together with a curated set of practical guidelines and recommendations for longitudinal motion estimation in patients, to foster future discoveries in the field, toward the integration of longitudinal motion in basic science as well as clinical practice.

34. A new synergistic relationship between xylan-active LPMO and xylobiohydrolase to tackle recalcitrant xylan

Abstract: Background Hemicellulose accounts for a significant part of plant biomass, and still poses a barrier to the efficient saccharification of lignocellulose. The recalcitrant part of hemicellulose is a serious impediment to the action of cellulases, despite the use of xylanases in the cellulolytic cocktail mixtures. However, the complexity and variety of hemicelluloses in different plant materials require the use of highly specific enzymes for a complete breakdown. Over the last few years, new fungal enzymes with novel activities on hemicelluloses have emerged. In the present study, we explored the synergistic relationships of the xylan-active AA14 lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO), PcAA14B, with the recently discovered glucuronoxylan-specific xylanase TtXyn30A, of the (sub)family GH30_7, displaying xylobiohydrolase activity, and with commercial cellobiohydrolases, on pretreated natural lignocellulosic substrates. Results PcAA14B and TtXyn30A showed a strong synergistic interaction on the degradation of the recalcitrant part of xylan. PcAA14B was able to increase the release of xylobiose from TtXyn30A, showing a degree of synergism (DS) of 3.8 on birchwood cellulosic fibers, and up to 5.7 on pretreated beechwood substrates. The increase in activity was dose- and time- dependent. A screening study on beechwood materials pretreated with different methods showed that the effect of the PcAA14B–TtXyn30A synergism was more prominent on substrates with low hemicellulose content, indicating that PcAA14B is mainly active on the recalcitrant part of xylan, which is in close proximity to the underlying cellulose fibers. Simultaneous addition of both enzymes resulted in higher DS than sequential addition. Moreover, PcAA14B was found to enhance cellobiose release from cellobiohydrolases during hydrolysis of pretreated lignocellulosic substrates, as well as microcrystalline cellulose. Conclusions The results of the present study revealed a new synergistic relationship not only among two recently discovered xylan-active enzymes, the LPMO PcAA14B, and the GH30_7 glucuronoxylan-active xylobiohydrolase TtXyn30A, but also among PcAA14B and cellobiohydrolases. We hypothesize that PcAA14B creates free ends in the xylan polymer, which can be used as targets for the action of TtXyn30A. The results are of special importance for the design of next-generation enzymatic cocktails, able to efficiently remove hemicelluloses, allowing complete saccharification of cellulose in plant biomass.

Abstract: In this presentation we detail highlight results obtained from the research work within the European Horizon 2020 project Smart4RES (http://www.smart4res.eu). The project, which started in 2019 and runs until 2023, aims at a better modelling and forecasting of weather variables necessary to optimise the integration of weather-dependent renewable energy (RES) production (i.e. wind, solar, run-of-the-river hydro) into power systems and electricity markets. Smart4RES gathers experts from several disciplines, from meteorology and renewable generation to market- and grid-integration. It aims to contribute to the pathway towards energy systems with very high RES penetrations by 2030 and beyond, through thematic objectives including:Improvement of weather and RES forecasting, Streamlined extraction of optimal value through new forecasting products, data market places, and novel business models; New data-driven optimization and decision-aid tools for market and grid management applications; Validation of new models in living labs and assessment of forecasting value vs costly remedies to hedge uncertainties (i.e. storage). In this presentation we will focus on our results on models that permit to improve forecasting of weather variables with focus on extreme situations and also through innovative measuring settings (i.e. a network of sky cameras). Also results will be presented on the development of seamless approach able to couple outputs from different ensemble numerical weather prediction (NWP) models with different temporal resolutions. Advances on the contribution of ultra-high resolution NWPs based on Large Eddy Simulation will be presented with evaluation results on real case studies like the Rhodes island in Greece.When it comes to forecasting the power output of RES plants, mainly wind and solar, the focus is on improving predictability using multiple sources of data. The proposed modelling approaches aim to efficiently combine highly dimensionally input (various types of satellite images, numerical weather predictions, spatially distributed measurements etc.). A priority has been to propose models that permit to generate probabilistic forecasts for multiple time frames in a seamless way. Thus, the objective is not only to improve accuracy and uncertainty estimations, but also to simplify complex forecasting modelling chains for applications that use forecasts at different time frames (i.e. a virtual power plant - VPP- with or without storage that participates in multiple markets). Our results show that the proposed seamless models permit to reach these performance objectives. Abstract: International audience; As far as Water is concerned, a lot of new directives and world concerns highlight among others the need for using ICT technologies, the global healthcare issues, the demand for fresh water, the food/beverage quality and safety, the environmental protection and the security strategies to reduce intentional contamination, all of the above having worldwide massive economic, natural and social impacts. However, despite an increasing demand for adaptability, compacity and performances at ever decreasing costs, the vast majority of water network monitoring systems remains based on sensor nodes with predefined and vertical applicative goals hindering interoperability and increasing costs (OPEX and CAPEX) for deploying new and added value services. Innovative technological products could answer the following acute needs in the field. This chapter introduce advance research works in sensing within two H2020 EU projects: the aqua3S project addressing sensors for Water Security purposes and LOTUS addressing low-cost multiparameter sensors for water quality.

Abstract: International audience; Penetration of renewable energy sources in isolated and weakly interconnected power systems can be increased in a secure and reliable way, if advanced control tools are available to the operators of these systems. In this paper the functions of MORE CARE are described. This is an advanced control software system aiming to optimize the operation of isolated and weakly interconnected systems by increasing the share of wind energy and other renewable forms, taking into account pumped hydro storage facilities and providing advanced on-line security functions, both in preventive and corrective mode. The main features of the control system comprise advanced software modules for load and wind power forecasting, unit commitment and economic dispatch of the conventional and renewable units and on-line security assessment capabilities integrated in a friendly man-machine environment. In this way, penetration of renewable energy sources in isolated systems can be increased in a secure and reliable way. Pilot installations of advanced control functions are foreseen on the islands of Crete, Ireland and Madeira.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we introduce a novel technique that aims to dynamically control a two-module bio-inspired softrobotic arm in order to qualitatively reproduce a path defined by sparse way-points. The main idea behind this work is based on the assumption that a complex trajectory may be derived as a combination of a discrete set of parameterizable simple movements, as suggested by Movement Primitive (MP) theory. Capitalising on recent advanced in this field, the proposed controller uses a Probabilistic MP (ProMP) model which initially creates an abstract mapping in the primitive-level between the task and the actuation space, and subsequently guides the movement's composition by exploiting its unique properties-conditioning and blending. At the same time, a learning-based adaptive controller updates the composition parameters by estimating the inverse kinematics of the robot, while an auxiliary process through replanning ensures that the trajectory complies with the new estimation. The learning architecture is evaluated on both a simulation model, and a real soft-robotic arm. The research findings show that the proposed methodology constitutes a novel approach that successfully manages to simplify the trajectory control task for robots of complex dynamics when high-precision is not required.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we examine the Nash equilibrium convergence properties of no-regret learning in general N-player games. For concreteness, we focus on the archetypal "follow the regularized leader" (FTRL) family of algorithms, and we consider the full spectrum of uncertainty that the players may encounter-from noisy, oracle-based feedback, to bandit, payoff-based information. In this general context, we establish a comprehensive equivalence between the stability of a Nash equilibrium and its support: a Nash equilibrium is stable and attracting with arbitrarily high probability if and only if it is strict (i.e., each equilibrium strategy has a unique best response). This equivalence extends existing continuous-time versions of the "folk theorem" of evolutionary game theory to a bona fide algorithmic learning setting, and it provides a clear refinement criterion for the prediction of the day-today behavior of no-regret learning in games.

Abstract: International audience; Next generation communication networks are expected to accommodate a high number of new and resource-voracious applications that can be offered to a large range of end users. Even though end devices are becoming more powerful, the available local resources cannot cope with the requirements of these applications. This has created a new challenge called task offloading, where computation intensive tasks need to be offloaded to more resource powerful remote devices. Naturally, the Cloud Computing is a well-tested infrastructure that can facilitate the task offloading. However, Cloud Computing as a centralized and distant infrastructure creates significant communication delays that cannot satisfy the requirements of the emerging delay-sensitive applications. To this end, the concept of Edge Computing has been proposed, where the Cloud Computing capabilities are repositioned closer to the end devices at the edge of the network. This paper provides a detailed survey of how the Edge and/or Cloud can be combined together to facilitate the task offloading problem. Particular emphasis is given on the mathematical, artificial intelligence and control theory optimization approaches that can be used to satisfy the various objectives, constraints and dynamic conditions of this end-to-end application execution approach. The survey concludes with identifying open challenges and future directions of the problem at hand.

Abstract: Programming upcoming exascale computing systems is expected to be a major challenge. New programming models are required to improve programmability, by hiding the complexity of these systems from application developers. The EXA2PRO programming framework aims at improving developers productivity for applications that target heterogeneous computing systems. It is based on advanced programming models and abstractions that encapsulate low-level platform-specific optimizations and it is supported by a runtime that handles application deployment on heterogeneous nodes. It supports a wide variety of platforms and accelerators (CPU, GPU, FPGA-based Data-Flow Engines), allowing developers to efficiently exploit heterogeneous computing systems, thus enabling more HPC applications to reach exascale computing. The EXA2PRO framework was evaluated using four HPC applications from different domains. By applying the EXA2PRO framework, the applications were automatically deployed and evaluated on a variety of computing architectures, enabling developers to obtain performance results on accelerators, test scalability on MPI clusters and productively investigate the degree by which each application can efficiently use different types of hardware resources. Abstract: In this paper, we obtain stability results for backward stochastic differential equations with jumps (BSDEs) in a very general framework. More specifically, we consider a convergent sequence of standard data, each associated to their own filtration, and we prove that the associated sequence of (unique) solutions is also convergent. Abstract: If equilibrium is to be a frame-independent condition, it is necessary the gravitational force tohave precisely the same transformation law as that of the Lorentz-force. Therefore, gravity shouldbe described by a gravitomagnetic theory with equations which have the same mathematical form asthose of the electromagnetic theory, with the gravitational mass as a Lorentz invariant. Using thisgravitomagnetic theory, in order to ensure the relativity of all kinds of translatory motion, we acceptthe principle of covariance and the equivalence principle and thus we prove that,1. The external inertial force, perceived by an accelerating body, is real gravitational force due toinduction effects from the entire Universe.2. The internal inertial force, depends on the body's internal structure, but in a free fall it iscanceled because of the equivalence principle and the body experiences only the external inertialforce. That is why all bodies, fall with the same acceleration.3. The inertial mass of a body depends on the distribution of matter in the Universe and this seemsvery important for the explanation of dark matter and dark energy.4. The gravitational field affects the spacetime metric and all the freely moving bodies follow geodesicof the metric.5. We can obtain the Schwarzschild metric and thus, the new theory is in agreement with all pastexperiments and observations.

Abstract: International audience; Humanities and Arts academic programs show a lack of knowledge related to Geotechnologies as useful tools for studying, managing and valorizing Cultural Heritage. Training programs of History, History of Art, Archaeology and Humanities generally do not include specific courses of GIS and Remote Sensing and do not contribute to develop specific skills in spatial knowledge or digital representation. There are no relevant online courses in Europe, as well as teaching materials (Open Educational Resources) on geotechnologies for Cultural Heritage. The MINERVA project (MappINg. Geosciences VAlue in Higher Education, Erasmus+ KA2) aims to promote and develop innovative methods and tools for teaching geotechnologies in Higher Education contexts. The project deals with the updating and development of e-learning materials, didactic methodologies and tools in the field of geotechnology for CH, in particular focusing on Open Educational Resources through an open access and free MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) web learning platform. This is particularly relevant in the present pandemic context where effective remote learning (and working) tools and platforms are required. The first output of the project is a framework focused on the key-competences needed by learners defined from a detailed matchmaking comparison between the European labour market and the existing academic profiles offered by European universities and related to the Cultural Heritage sector. The project involves research teams of the Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne (France), the Society for the study of Ancient Topography – Dipylon (Greece), the Univerzitet u Nišu (Serbia), the Znanstvenoraziskovalni Center – Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti (Slovenia) and the Universidad de Castilla – La Mancha (Spain).
