In this paper, we examine the role of Sen's "development as freedom" paradigm in management studies by theorizing how understandings of freedoms and unfreedoms affect the adoption and institutionalization of extra-institutional social movement tactics as mainstream business practices in market-based economic systems. We propose a framework for understanding how values and ideologies on what constitutes as freedom affect the choices of individual and institutional investors in a market-based economy to invest selectively by ostracizing certain businesses and privileging others. This case examines the complex challenges in establishing an Integrative Wellness Center providing specialized mental health treatment catering to indigenous veterans in the fictional state of Valoria. It analyzes the need for culturally-centered care given the high rates of PTSD, suicidal ideation and suicides among indigenous veterans in Valoria due to trauma from war, compounded by intergenerational economic hardship and loss of cultural identity. The case follows the journey of Dr. Wilma Cloud as she aims to bridge gaps in standard Western therapeutic approaches by incorporating traditional healing practices alongside clinical medicine to better serve this underserved demographic in Valoria. Envisioning such an unconventional program catalyzed initial skepticism and opposition from diverse stakeholders including municipalities, government health agencies and mainstream veteran groups over funding, eligibility criteria and use of alternative therapies. This case involves evaluating multi-faceted barriers around trust-building, navigating structural biases, and reconciling competing conceptualizations of health and evidence-based treatment. The case ultimately highlights the transformative potential that transpires from cooperative efforts of leaders leveraging community advocacy to embrace inclusive systems honoring indigeneity. This research examines the assignment of accountability and blame in multilevel error cascades by utilizing Scott and Lyman's concept of "accounts" and Goffman's notion of "remedial work". Preventing and learning from error cascades are key challenges in high-risk industries where firms strive to achieve greater reliability and resilience. Using oral and written testimony, archival records, media releases and employee reviews, this paper delves into the Boeing 737 MAX case to investigate the ways in which actors at multiple levels communicated their preferred meaning about the MAX accidents and the purported failure of Boeing's novel MCAS technology. The findings from this study indicate that errors in the Boeing MAX case were the result of miscalculation of risks at different levels of the system at various points in time that can be traced back to several years before the actual accidents. These results speak to how organizational culture and executive decisions at Boeing resulted in multiple "misses" of opportunities to rectify their flawed technology and engage in comprehensive communication with other external stakeholders about the MCAS system. A large body of literature investigates how women entered the professions and whether women have achieved parity with men. We contribute to this literature by asking: how successful have women been in becoming gatekeepers in academia? We attempt to answer this question through an analysis of acknowledgments in 7,698 journal articles published in five leading sociology journals. We code for the gender of people acknowledged by the authors and construct the network of individuals acknowledged in elite sociology. We construe this as a measure of status and influence in the field. Those frequently sought out by authors are likely to be perceived as illustrious and knowledgeable. We find that the absolute number of women has increased in the network during 1980 to 2012. However, we also find evidence of a persistent gap between men and women in their positions within this network. This suggests that there remains a glass ceiling in sociology - women may enter the field, but are not as likely to be sought or recognized for advice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we examine the role of Sen's "development as freedom" paradigm in management studies by theorizing how understandings of freedom and unfreedoms affect the adoption and institutionalization of extra-institutional social movement tactics as mainstream business practices in market-based economic systems. Rather than a capabilities approach that narrowly focuses on fulfilling elementary needs like health, education and sanitation, this study argues that freedom can be more broadly construed in terms of the ways in which people perceive their choice to allocate resources to influence the world around them. We propose a framework for understanding how values and ideologies on what constitutes as freedom affect the choices of individual and institutional investors in a market-based economy to invest selectively by ostracizing certain businesses and privileging others. We illustrate the process of accessing such freedom using the example of the rise of the logic of social protection and environmental justice from the divestment movement of the 1960s, and the resultant growth in the business practice of socially responsible investing in financial markets. We conclude by discussing how understandings of freedoms and unfreedoms shape the emergence of alternative logics in capital markets and the development of subsequent organizational forms and practices. Using an inductive approach involving topic modeling, word co- occurrences and historical analysis, we investigate how the concept of "quality" in health care and the vocabularies of quality evolved from 1993 to 2015. We find that the vocabularies of quality have been structured around two main topics or higher- order vocabulary dimensions involving: (1) the measurement of quality; and (2) the organization of quality care. We trace the temporal evolution of these two dimensions over the study period, conduct between- topic analyses to examine the distribution of attention between these two dimensions where usage of the term "quality" is explicit and other topics in which the notion of quality is implicitly embedded, and use analyses of word co- occurrences to investigate more fine-grained changes in word- to- word relationships relevant to our two primary dimensions of interest. By means of insights from our historical analysis, we propose three mechanisms responsible for the changes in vocabularies over time: (1) crisis events as windows of opportunity to engage in meaning-making activities; (2) system- wide search for solutions to crisis; and (3) an accountability- focused rational scientific imperative that eroded the autonomy of those purportedly liable for the crisis.
