This study identifies and characterizes a second polymorph (Poly‐II) of quinoline‐4‐carbaldoxime (HQ), isolated from an acetone‐acetonitrile mixture. Poly‐II was compared to the previously known Poly‐I using PXRD, DSC, IR, and Raman spectroscopy. Poly‐I forms a 1D supramolecular assembly, whereas Poly‐II exhibits a 2D assembly with additional hydrogen bonds. Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals the presence of different non‐covalent interactions in Poly‐I and Poly‐II, and atom‐in‐molecule (AIM) analysis identifies their strength. AIM analysis, along with Espinosa's relation, was used to calculate the strength of O─H···N and C─H···N interactions in Poly‐I and Poly‐II. The values are −30.0 and −6.17 kJ/mol for Poly‐I, whereas the values for Poly‐II are −36.18 and −3.66 kJ/mol. The plane wave periodic DFT calculations determined the lattice energies of Poly‐I and Poly‐II to be −1.52 and −1.53 eV, respectively, indicating that both polymorphs have comparable stability. The crystal parameters of Poly‐I and Poly‐II obtained from theoretical simulations and the experiment are comparable, indicating the similar stability of Poly‐I and Poly‐II. Computational simulations confirmed experimental data, showing both polymorphs have similar stability and melting points despite different unit cell volumes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The oxime functional group is pivotal in chemistry, finding extensive applications in medical science, catalysis, organic functional group transformations, and the recognition of essential and toxic analytes. While the coordination chemistry of oxime derivatives has been thoroughly explored and several reviews have been published on this topic in reputable journals, a comprehensive review encompassing various aspects such as crystal engineering, cation and anion recognition, as well as coordination chemistry activities, is still in demand. This feature article highlights the diverse applications of oxime derivatives across multiple domains of chemistry, including medicine, agriculture, crystal engineering, coordination chemistry, and molecular recognition studies. Each of the oxime derivatives in this feature article are meticulously described in terms of their medicinal applications, crop protection, crystal engineering attributes, analyte recognition capabilities, and coordination chemistry aspects. By providing a comprehensive overview of their versatile applications, this article aims to inspire researchers to explore and develop novel oxime-based derivatives for future applications. Heavy metals act as cofactors for several microbial enzymes and are required in low concentrations for the proper biological functioning of yeasts. Because concentrations beyond the permitted threshold can damage a cell's functionality and viability, metal tolerance in yeasts towards such heavy metals is therefore desirable during fermentation. Tyrosol, a quorum-sensing molecule in yeasts, protects yeasts from oxidative stress induced by various factors, but the performance of the molecule under heavy metal-induced stress is not known. In this investigation, the metal tolerance of four species of endemic yeasts from northeast India, Wickerhamomyces anomalus , Candida tropicalis , Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida glabrata , isolated from traditional starter culture cakes, was tested towards zinc (Zn+2), manganese (Mn+2), cobalt (Co+2) and copper (Cu+2) in the presence and absence of tyrosols retrieved from these isolates. The decreasing order of the tolerance of isolates was found to be Mn+2 > Zn+2 > Co+2 > Cu+2. Under the influence of tyrosols, isolates showed enhanced growth at their upper metal tolerance limit. Candida tropicalis showed enhanced growth (2−48-fold, P  < 0.0001) in all the tested metal consisting medium (2 mM Zn+2, 5 mM Mn+2, 2 mM Co+2 and 1 mM Cu+2), while W. anomalu s, C. glabrata and S. cerevisiae showed increased growth (3−17-fold, P  < 0.0001) in Zn+2 (2 mM), Mn+2 (5 mM) and Cu+2 (1 mM) augmented medium. The overall result suggests that tyrosol exerts a protective effect under heavy metal-induced stress, which could be useful in enhancing the quality of fermented products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Byline: Bhaskar Nath, Krassimira Kazashka-Hristozova In this paper, the inextricable link between sustainable development and sustainability of the natural environment is pointed out and a heuristic for developing a unique operational definition of sustainable development is proposed. It is argued that if the international community is at all serious about achieving even a modest degree of global environmental sustainability and global sustainable development, determined efforts must be made to reduce consumption by the affluent; that science and technology, however advanced, can only help the process of global sustainable development in a limited way but cannot deliver it; and that moral and ethical education is needed to achieve global environmental sustainability by changing people's attitude to nature and the environment from one of gross exploitation as at present to that of genuine concern and respect. To this end, a generic outline syllabus, including essential elements of moral philosophy, is proposed for the environmental education of undergraduate engineering students.
