Graphitic carbon nitrides are covalently-bonded, layered, and crystalline semiconductors with high thermal and oxidative stability. These properties make graphitic carbon nitrides potentially useful in overcoming the limitations of 0D molecular and 1D polymer semiconductors. In this contribution, we study structural, vibrational, electronic and transport properties of nano-crystals of poly(triazine-imide) (PTI) derivatives with intercalated Li- and Br-ions and without intercalates. Intercalation-free poly(triazine-imide) (PTI-IF) is corrugated or AB stacked and partially exfoliated. We find that the lowest energy electronic transition in PTI is forbidden due to a non-bonding uppermost valence band and that its electroluminescence from the π-π* transition is quenched which severely limits their use as emission layer in electroluminescent devices. THz conductivity in nano-crystalline PTI is up to eight orders of magnitude higher than the macroscopic conductivity of PTI films. We find that the charge carrier density of PTI nano-crystals is among the highest of all known intrinsic semiconductors, however, macroscopic charge transport in films of PTI is limited by disorder at crystal-crystal interfaces. Future device applications of PTI will benefit most from single crystal devices that make use of electron transport in the lowest, π-like conduction band.

In spite of their growing importance for optoelectronic devices, the fundamental properties and photophysics of molecularly doped organic solids remain poorly understood. Such doping typically leads to a small fraction of free conductive charges, with most electronic carriers remaining Coulombically bound to the ionized dopant. Recently, we have reported photocurrent for devices containing vacuum-deposited TAPC (1,1-bis(4-bis(4-methylphenyl)aminophenyl)cyclohexane) doped with MoO3, showing that photoexcitation of charged TAPC molecules increases the concentration of free holes that contribute to conduction. Here, we elucidate the excited-state dynamics of such doped TAPC films to unravel the key mechanisms responsible for this effect. We demonstrate that excitation of different electronic transitions in charged and neutral TAPC molecules allows bound holes to overcome the Coulombic attraction to their MoO3 counterions, resulting in an enhanced yield of long-lived free carriers. This is caused by ultrafast back-and-forth shuffling of charges and excitation energy between adjacent cations and neutral molecules, competing with relatively slow nonradiative decay from higher excited states of TAPC•+. The light-induced generation of conductive carriers requires the coexistence of cationic and neutral TAPC, a favorable energy level alignment, and intermolecular interactions in the solid state.

Understanding the impact of side chains on the aqueous redox properties of conjugated polymers is crucial to unlocking their potential in bioelectrochemical devices, such as organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Here, we report a series of polar propylenedioxythiophene-based copolymers functionalized with glyme side chains of varying lengths as well as an analogue with short hydroxyl side chains. We show that long polar side chains are not required for achieving high volumetric capacitance (C*), as short hydroxy substituents can afford facile doping and high C* in saline-based electrolytes. Furthermore, we demonstrate that varying the length of the polar glyme chains leads to subtle changes in material properties. Increasing the length of glyme side chain is generally associated with an enhancement in OECT performance, doping kinetics, and stability, with the polymer bearing the longest side chains exhibiting the highest performance ([μC*]OECT = 200 ± 8 F cm-1 V-1 s-1). The origin of this performance enhancement is investigated in different device configurations using in situ techniques (e.g., time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry and chronoamperometry). These studies suggest that the performance improvement is not due to significant changes in C* but rather due to variations in the inferred mobility. Through a thorough comparison of two different architectures, we demonstrate that device geometry can obfuscate the benchmarking of OECT active channel materials, likely due to contact resistance effects. By complementing all electrochemical and spectroscopic experiments with in situ measurements performed within a planar OECT device configuration, this work seeks to unambiguously assign material design principles to fine-tune the properties of poly(dioxythiophene)s relevant for application in OECTs.

Molecular engineering is driving the recent efficiency leaps in organicphotovoltaics (OPVs). A presynthetic determination of frontier energy levelsmakes the screening of potential molecules more efficient, exhaustive, andcost-effective. Here, a convolutional neural network is developed to predictthe highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital(HOMO/LUMO) levels of donor molecules for OPV. The model takes a 2Dstructure image and returns a prediction of its HOMO/LUMO levelscomparable to experimental values. Insufficient experimental datasets areovercome with transfer learning where the model is initially trained on thelarge Harvard Clean Energy Project dataset and then fine-tuned usingexperimental data from the Harvard Organic Photovoltaic dataset. Errormargins on predicted HOMO/LUMO levels below 200 meV are achieved,without any chemical knowledge implemented. Noticeably, the model outputshave higher accuracy and precision than corresponding density functionaltheory (DFT) estimations. The model and its limitations are further tested ona home-built dataset of commercially available donor polymers reported inOPVs (e.g., P3HT, PTB7-Th, PM6, D18). The results demonstrate both thepractical utility of this model, to foster rational molecular engineering for OPVoptimization, and the potential for deep learning techniques, in general, torevolutionize the energy materials research and development sector.

A blend of a low-optical-gap diketopyrrolopyrrole polymer and a fullerene derivative, with near-zero driving force for electron transfer, is investigated. Using femtosecond transient absorption and electroabsorption spectroscopy, the charge transfer (CT) and recombination dynamics as well as the early-time transport are quantified. Electron transfer is ultrafast, consistent with a Marcus-Levich-Jortner description. However, significant charge recombination and unusually short excited (S1 ) and CT state lifetimes (≈14 ps) are observed. At low S1 -CT offset, a short S1 lifetime mediates charge recombination because: i) back-transfer from the CT to the S1 state followed by S1 recombination occurs and ii) additional S1 -CT hybridization decreases the CT lifetime. Both effects are confirmed by density functional theory calculations. In addition, relatively slow (tens of picoseconds) dissociation of charges from the CT state is observed, due to low local charge mobility. Simulations using a four-state kinetic model entailing the effects of energetic disorder reveal that the free charge yield can be increased from the observed 12% to 60% by increasing the S1 and CT lifetimes to 150 ps. Alternatively, decreasing the interfacial CT state disorder while increasing bulk disorder of free charges enhances the yield to 65% in spite of the short lifetimes.

Voltage losses limit the performance of organic solar cells, yet their origins are not fully understood. Now, a theoretical model encompassing electronic state hybridization and thermal population of vibrational states explains the reduced non-radiative voltage losses in efficient non-fullerene acceptor systems.

Halide perovskites have shown excellent photophysical properties for solar cell applications which led to a rapid increase of the device efficiency. Understanding the charge carrier dynamics within the active perovskite absorber and at its interfaces will be key to further progress in their development. Here we present a series of fully evaporated devices employing hole transport materials with different ionization energies. The open circuit voltage of the devices, along with their ideality factors, confirm that the former is mainly determined by the bulk and surface recombination in the perovskite, rather than by the energetic offset between the valence band of the perovskite and the highest occupied molecular orbital of the organic transport layers. These results help to further understand the origin of the open circuit potential in perovskite solar cells, which is an important parameter that needs to be improved to further boost power conversion efficiencies.

Doping of organic semiconductor films enhances their conductivity for applications in organic electronics, thermoelectrics and bioelectronics. However, much remains to be learnt about the properties of the conductive charges in order to optimize the design of the materials. Electrochemical doping is not only the fundamental mechanism in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), used in biomedical sensors, but it also represents an ideal playground for fundamental studies. Benefits of investigating doping mechanisms via electrochemistry include controllable doping levels, reversibility and high achievable carrier densities. We introduced here a new technique, applying in situ terahertz (THz) spectroscopy directly to an electrochemically doped polymer in combination with spectro-electrochemistry and chronoamperometry. We evaluate the intrinsic short-range transport properties of the polymer (without the effects of long-range disorder, grain boundaries and contacts), while precisely tuning the doping level via the applied oxidation voltage. Analysis of the complex THz conductivity reveals both the mobility and density of the charges. We find that polarons and bipolarons need to co-exist in an optimal ratio to reach high THz conductivity (∼300 S cm−1) and mobility (∼7 cm2 V−1 s−1) of P3HT in aqueous KPF6 electrolyte. In this regime, charge mobility increases and a high fraction of injected charges (up to 25%) participates in the transport via mixed-valence hopping. We also show significantly higher conductivity in electrochemically doped P3HT with respect to co-processed molecularly doped films at a similar doping level, which suffer from low mobility. Efficient molecular doping should therefore aim for reduced disorder, high doping levels and backbones that favour bipolaron formation., In situ terahertz spectroscopy on electrochemically doped P3HT reveals the impact of polarons and bipolarons on the short-range conductivity.

Elucidating the interplay between film morphology, photophysics, and device performance of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaics remains challenging. Here, we use the well-defined morphology of vapor-deposited di-[4-(N,N-di-p-tolyl-amino)-phenyl]cyclohexane (TAPC):C60 blends to address charge generation and recombination by transient ultrafast spectroscopy. We gain relevant new insights to the functioning of dilute-donor (5% TAPC) fullerene-based BHJs compared to molecularly intermixed systems (50% TAPC). First, we show that intermolecular charge-transfer (CT) excitons in the C60 clusters of dilute BHJs rapidly localize to Frenkel excitons prior to dissociating at the donor:acceptor interface. Thus, both Frenkel and CT excitons generate photocurrent over the entire fullerene absorption range. Second, we selectively monitor interfacial and bulk C60 clusters via their electro-absorption, demonstrating an energetic gradient that assists free charge generation. Third, we identify a fast (

We demonstrate that time-domain ptychography, when applied to a set of broadband vibrational sum frequency spectra, reconstructs amplitude and phase of the vibrational free induction decay from an interfacial sample with a resolution that is independent of up-converting pulse bandwidth and spectrometer resolution. These important improvements require no modifications to most standard homodyne setups, and the method is applicable to other coherent homodyne spectroscopies such as coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy and transient grating spectroscopy.

We investigate the potential for cavity-modified electron transfer in a doped organic semiconductor through the photocurrent that arises from exciting charged molecules (polarons). When the polaron optical transition is strongly coupled to a Fabry-Perot microcavity mode, we observe polaron polaritons in the photoconductivity action spectrum and find that their magnitude depends differently on applied electric field than photocurrent originating from the excitation of uncoupled polarons in the same cavity. Crucially, moving from positive to negative detuning causes the upper and lower polariton photocurrents to swap their field dependence, with the more polaronlike branch resembling that of an uncoupled excitation. These observations are understood on the basis of a phenomenological model in which strong coupling alters the Onsager dissociation of polarons from their dopant counterions by effectively increasing the thermalization length of the photoexcited charge carrier.

Organic-inorganic perovskites are one of the most promising photovoltaic materials for the design of next generation solar cells. The lead-based perovskite prepared with methylammonium and iodide was the first in demonstrating high power conversion efficiency, and it remains one of the most used materials today. However, perovskites prepared by mixing several halides and several cations systematically yield higher efficiencies than "pure" methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) devices. In this work, we unravel the excited-state properties of a mixed-halide (iodide and bromide) and mixed-cation (methylammonium and formamidinium) perovskite. Combining time-resolved photoluminescence, transient absorption, and optical-pump-terahertz-probe experiments with density functional theory calculations, we show that the population of higher-lying excited states in the mixed material increases the lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers upon well above-bandgap excitation. We suggest that alloying different halides and different cations reduces the structural symmetry of the perovskite, which partly releases the selection rules to populate the higher-energy states upon light absorption. Our investigation thus shows that mixed halide perovskites should be considered as an electronically different material than MAPbI3, paving the way toward further materials optimization and improved power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells.

The growing number of applications of doped organic semiconductors drives the development of highly conductive and stable materials. Lack of under- standing about the formation and properties of mobile charges limits the ability to improve material design. Thus the largely unexplored photophysics of doped systems are addressed here to gain insights about the characteris- tics of doping-induced polarons and their interactions with their surround- ings. The study of the ultrafast optical processes in a self-doped conjugated polyelectrolyte reveals that polarons not only affect their environment via Coulomb effects but also strongly couple electronically to nearby neutral sites. This is unambiguously demonstrated by the simultaneous depletion of both the neutral and polaronic transitions, as well as by correlated excited state dynamics, when either transition is targeted during ultrafast experiments. The results contrast with the conventional picture of localized intragap polaron states but agree with revised models for the optical transitions in doped organic materials, which predict a common ground level for polarons and neighboring neutral sites. Such delocalization of polarons into the frontier transport levels of their surroundings could enhance the electronic connectivity between doped and undoped sites, contributing to the formation of conductive charges.

The molecular-level arrangement of the donor and acceptor (i.e. the local morphology) in organic solar cells governs charge separation and charge transport via its effect on the mobility of charges. However, the nanometre-scale mobility in such systems, which can be measured using terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, has been little investigated at relevant low excitation densities, due to extremely weak signals. Here, we study the mobility over short distances and at ultrashort times using time-resolved optical-pump-THz-probe (OPTP) spectroscopy on pBTTT:PCBM blends. This complements our previous results obtained with transient absorption (TA) and electro-modulated differential absorption (EDA) techniques. In the pBTTT:PCBM system, the co-existence of fullerene-/polymer-rich (‘neat’) and co-crystalline (‘intermixed’) regions can be controlled through choice of composition (weight ratio of the two components, use of processing additive). We demonstrate high short-range mobilities that help charges separate, and we show how this mobility of photogenerated charges develops in time, in particular as the charges move between different phase regions of the blend. By reducing the pump fluence below the threshold for nonlinear recombination mechanisms, we access these properties at solar cell operating conditions. Overall, we explain the necessity of different local phases through their influence on charge lifetime and mobility.

The electrochemical dedoping and redoping processes of a thin poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film immersed in an electrolyte are studied at different temperatures with time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry in the visible and near-infrared range. The spectral signatures of neutral, polaronic, and bipolaronic states of PEDOT are resolved using multivariate curve resolution analysis. Kinetic modeling of their dynamics reveals that both the dedoping and redoping are sequential processes and occur within a few hundred milliseconds in the system. Evaluation of the temperature-dependence with the Van't Hoff, Arrhenius, and Eyring formalisms highlights the role of entropy in both the establishment of the redox equilibrium at a given voltage bias and the reaction rates. This study provides a significant understanding of the fundamental mechanisms determining the level and rate of the electrochemical processes in PEDOT:PSS and will help tailor the design of faster and more efficient bioelectronic devices based on mixed ionic���electronic conductors.

Exfoliated transition metal dichalcogenides (2D-TMDs) are attractive light-harvesting materials for large-area and inexpensive solar energy conversion given their ability to form highly tolerant heterojunctions. However, the preparation of large-area heterojunctions with these materials remains a challenge toward practical devices, and the details of photogenerated charge carrier harvesting are not well established. In this work, we use all solution-based methods to prepare large-area hybrid heterojunction films consisting of exfoliated semiconducting 2H-MoS2 flakes and a perylene-diimide (PDI) derivative. Hybrid photoelectrodes exhibited a 6-fold improvement in photocurrent compared to that of bare MoS2 or PDI films. Kelvin probe force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transient absorption measurements of the hybrid films indicate the formation of an interfacial dipole at the MoS2/organic interface and suggest that the photogenerated holes transfer from MoS2 to the PDI. Moreover, performing the same analysis on MoSe2-based hybrid devices confirms the importance of proper valence band alignment for efficient charge transfer and photogenerated carrier collection in TMD/organic semiconductor hybrid heterojunctions.

Solution processed semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides are emerging as promising two dimensional materials for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. Here we have used transient absorption spectroscopy to provide unambiguous evidence and distinct signatures of photogenerated excitons and charges in solution processed few layer MoS2 nanoflakes (10-20 layers). We find that photoexcitation above the direct energy gap results in the ultrafast generation of a mixture of free charges in direct band states and of excitons. While the excitons are rapidly trapped the free charges are long lived with nanosecond recombination times. The different signatures observed for these species enable the experimental extraction of the exciton binding energy which we find to be ~80 meV in the nanoflakes in agreement with reported values in the bulk material. Carrier density dependent measurements bring new insights about the many body interactions between free charges resulting in band gap renormalization effects in the few layer MoS2 nanoflakes.

Hybrid organic–inorganic metal perovskites have emerged as highly promising materials for solar energy conversion. However, key questions regarding the working principles of perovskite solar cells remain to be answered in order to improve the design of such devices. In the present study, we have investigated the influence of excess excitation energy on the initial photo-products generated from FTO/meso-TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3 samples. We find that upon resonant excitation at the band edge, part of the formation of free charges passes via an excitonic state that dissociates on the sub-picosecond time scale. The use of a spectroscopy technique called pump–push–probe electro-absorption provides insight into the energetic landscape of nanostructured donor–acceptor interfaces in bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells.

Future lightweight, flexible, and wearable electronics will employ visible-light- communication schemes to interact within indoor environments. Organic photodiodes are particularly well suited for such technologies as they enable chemically tailored optoelectronic performance and fabrication by printing techniques on thin and flexible substrates. However, previous methods have failed to address versatile functionality regarding wavelength selectivity without increasing fabrication complexity. This work introduces a general solution for printing wavelength-selective bulk-heterojunction photodetectors through engineering of the ink formulation. Nonfullerene acceptors are incorporated in a transparent polymer donor matrix to narrow and tune the response in the visible range without optical filters or light-management techniques. This approach effectively decouples the optical response from the viscoelastic ink properties, simplifying process development. A thorough morphological and spectroscopic investigation finds excellent charge-carrier dynamics enabling state-of-the-art responsivities >102 mA W−1 and cutoff frequencies >1.5 MHz. Finally, the color selectivity and high performance are demonstrated in a filterless visible-light-communication system capable of demultiplexing intermixed optical signals.

2017 saw the publication of several new material systems that challenge the long-held notion that a driving force is necessary for efficient exciton dissociation in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and that a loss of ≈0.6 eV between the energy of the charge transfer state E ct and the energy corresponding to open circuit is general. In light of these developments, the authors combine insights from device physics and spectroscopy to review the two key tradeoffs limiting OPV performances. These are the tradeoff between the charge carrier generation efficiency and the achievable open circuit voltage (V oc ) and the tradeoff between device thickness (light absorption) and fill factor. The emergence of several competitive nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) is exciting for both of these. The authors analyze what makes these materials compare favorably to fullerenes, including the potential role of molecular vibrations, and discuss both design criteria for new molecules and the achievable power conversion efficiencies.

The well-known organic semiconductor C60 is attracting renewed attention due to its centimetre-long electron diffusion length and high performance of solar cells containing 95% fullerene. Yet, its photophysical properties remain poorly understood. Here, we elucidate the dynamics of Frenkel and intermolecular (inter- C60) charge transfer (CT) excitons in neat and diluted C60 films from high quality femtosecond transient absorption (TA) measurements, performed at low fluences and free from oxygen or pump-induced photo-dimerization. We find from preferential excitation of either species that the CT excitons give rise to a strong electro-absorption signal but are extremely short-lived. The Frenkel exciton relaxation and triplet yield depend strongly on the C60 aggregation. Finally, TA measurements on full devices with applied electric field allow us to optically monitor the dissociation of CT excitons into free charges for the first time and to demonstrate the influence of cluster size on the spectral signature of the C60 anion.
