Il presente lavoro illustra uno dei primi casi applicativi del Decreto Ministeriale 1 marzo 2019 n.46 ad un'area vasta potenzialmente contaminata del sud Italia. Lo studio condotto ha riguardato la progettazione e l'esecuzione di una serie di indagini per comprendere e definire lo stato di qualità ambientale e gli aspetti sanitari correlati di territori agricoli ricadenti nell'area di studio. A tal fine, il CNR IRSA di Bari ha redatto, ai sensi dell'Art. 3 dell'Allegato 1 del D.M. 46/2019, un Piano di indagini finalizzato alla comprensione degli aspetti ambientali/sanitari e alla valutazione del rischio delle suddette aree. In tale contesto, partendo dalle definizioni teoriche del D.M. 46/2019, sono stati sperimentati nuovi approcci operativi per la caratterizzazione delle aree agricole, sviluppando una metodologia per la definizione dei criteri di identificazione delle cosiddette "aree omogenee", che tiene conto delle condizioni sito-specifiche e della documentazione tecnico-scientifica disponibile. Il metodo sperimentato ha previsto l'utilizzo di strategie di analisi molto diverse tra loro, integrate con modalità innovative di valutazione delle contaminazioni riscontrabili nell'area di studio. Le indagini in sito e le analisi dei campioni di suolo sono tutt'ora in corso. Qualora l'esito delle indagini dovesse accertare superamenti dei valori delle Concentrazioni Soglia di Contaminazione (CSC) anche per uno solo dei contaminanti ricercati nei suoli, come disposto dal D.M. 46/2019, sono previsti approfondimenti sui prodotti agro alimentari e, se necessario, anche sui suoli. Infine, è prevista l'applicazione della spettroscopia vis-NIR come tecnica innovativa per il controllo rapido di eventuali anomalie risultanti dalle analisi chimiche dei campioni compositi di suolo e per la valutazione delle caratteristiche chimico-fisiche dei singoli campioni elementari di suolo che costituiscono quello composito, per verificarne l'effettiva omogeneità.

La bonifica e la gestione sostenibile del suolo sono divenuti, negli ultimi anni, temi ambientali di rilievo. La risorsa suolo, infatti, è sempre più degradata sia direttamente che indirettamente dalle attività umane, rendendo pertanto necessarie attività di bonifica, riqualificazione e monitoraggio. Solitamente, lo studio del suolo, la valutazione delle sue proprietà e del suo stato di contaminazione vengono effettuati mediante analisi di laboratorio convenzionali che, sebbene utili e praticamente insostituibili per indagini dettagliate, comportano lunghi tempi di realizzazione e costi elevati. Le determinazioni analitiche, quindi, risultano poco sostenibili laddove è necessario analizzare un numero elevato di campioni di suolo, come nel caso di aree particolarmente estese e/o per la determinazione di molti parametri ambientali. Di qui la necessità di utilizzare tecniche più rapide e convenienti per le analisi del suolo. A tal riguardo, la spettroscopia di riflettanza nel dominio vis-NIR, negli ultimi decenni, si è dimostrata essere una valida alternativa alle convenzionali analisi del suolo. Essa consente di realizzare valutazioni qualitative e quantitative dei principali costituenti del suolo, oltre che di alcuni contaminanti organici e inorganici. Tale tecnica, pertanto, può rivelarsi utile sia nelle fasi di pre-screening di eventuali contaminanti del suolo, sia nelle attività di caratterizzazione e di monitoraggio dello stato di qualità ambientale dei suoli. Ciò premesso, nel presente lavoro si intende mettere in luce le potenzialità dell'utilizzo della spettroscopia visNIR, in combinazione con metodi di analisi statistica multivariata, per la valutazione e la predizione del contenuto di metalli pesanti, riportando un recente caso applicativo di tale tecnica nell'investigazione dei suoli potenzialmente contaminati dell'Area Vasta di Taranto.

Remediation interventions based on the native bacteria’s capability to reduce Cr(VI) represent a valid strategy in terms of economic and environmental sustainability. In this study, a bioremediation test was carried out using viable microcosms set with groundwater and deep soil (4:1), collected from the saturated zone of an industrial site in Southern Italy that was polluted by ~130 µg L−1 of Cr(VI). Conditions simulating the potential natural attenuation were compared to the enhanced natural attenuation induced by supplying yeast extract or polyhydroxybutyrate. Sterile controls were set up to study the possible Cr(VI) abiotic reduction. No pollution attenuation was detected in the unamended viable reactors, whereas yeast extract provided the complete Cr(VI) removal in 7 days, and polyhydroxybutyrate allowed ~70% pollutant removal after 21 days. The incomplete abiotic removal of Cr(VI) was observed in sterile reactors amended with yeast extract, thus suggesting the essential role of native bacteria in Cr(VI) remediation. This was in accordance with the results of Pearson’s coefficient test, which revealed that Cr(VI) removal was positively correlated with microbial proliferation (n = 0.724), and also negatively correlated with pH (n = −0.646), dissolved oxygen (n = −0.828) and nitrate (n = −0.940). The relationships between the Cr(VI) removal and other monitored parameters were investigated by principal component analysis, which explained 76.71% of the total variance.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-05-01 Exploitation of tuff deposits represents an intensive and destructive human activity that can completely modify natural soils, sometimes leading to their total disappearance. Soil reclamation of quarry areas can usually be done by soil rebuilding, employing complex and expensive techniques. In this research, we aimed to evaluate reconstructed Technosols and associated vegetation, called pedotechnosystem (PTS) and their development and behaviour for tuff quarry reclamation for both environmental rehabilitation and agricultural purposes. Technosols were investigated under three different conditions: i) a control consisting of a constructed Technosol (CT) without additional treatments; ii) CT treated with conventional mineral fertilization (CTCF); and, iii) CT treated with a composted mix of commercial organic amendments (CTOA). Different open-air mesocosms (pots) were investigated and evaluated in terms of: i) development, production, and metabolomic profile of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), olive (Olea europaea L.), and grapevine (Vitis Vinifera L. ssp. Sativa) in a mixture with a pasture species: ii) the Technosols physical-chemical responses. Specifically, after 15 months, all investigated PTS were evaluated in terms of: i) pasture species total dry matter (TDM) production, height (H), stem diameter (D) and nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) content of dry matter; ii) physical-chemical analyses of all investigated substrates; iii) olive, grape, and rosemary characterization by analysing N, P, and K content in dry leaves as well as their metabolomic profile. Statistical differences among treatments were ascertained through ANOVA, while observed variability was interpreted using a principal factor analysis (PFA). Use of CTOA resulted in statistically (p < 0.05) higher performances in terms of TDM as well as P contents in harvested pasture species. In CTOA, more favourable pH conditions (near neutral) for plant growth were observed; additionally, such PTS showed the best performances in terms of soil organic matter (SOM), total N, and P as well as an improvement for most of the investigated organic fractions and relative humification indexes. Identified metabolites varied greatly by species, underscoring the capability of metabolites in fingerprinting different species and related responses to environmental stress factors. Results from PFA showed that: i) CTOA produced better growing conditions and agronomic performance among all investigated PTS; ii) metabolomic profiles are a reliable fingerprint for investigating plant responses to environmental stress and can help differentiate behaviour that follows. Overall, the research demonstrated that CTOA represents a low-cost easily applicable technique for soil rebuilding in tuff quarry areas. The lower Calore and middle Volturno valleys preserve stratigraphical and morphological evidence and tephrostratigraphic markers particularly suitable for reconstructing the long-term geomorphological evolution of the central-southern Apennines. Aim of our study is to identify the main steps of the Quaternary landscape evolution of these valley systems and to improve knowledge about the relationships between fluvial processes and tectonics, volcanic activity, climatic and human influences. To this purpose, we carried out an integrated geomorphological and chrono-stratigraphical analysis of identified fluvial landforms and related deposits, integrated by 230Th/234U datings on travertines from the Telese Plain area. The study highlighted in particular: (1) fluvial sedimentation started in the Middle Pleistocene (~650 ka) within valleys that originated in the lower Pleistocene under the control of high-angle faults, (2) extensional tectonics acted during the Middle and Upper Pleistocene, driving the formation of the oldest fluvial terraces and alluvial fans, and persisted beyond the emplacement of the Campanian Ignimbrite pyroclastic deposits (~39 ka), and (3) from the late Upper Pleistocene onwards (&lt, 15 ka), the role of tectonics appears negligible, while climatic changes played a key role in the formation of three orders of valley floor terraces and the youngest alluvial fans.

Il paesaggio rurale è un elemento fortemente caratterizzante il Sannio Beneventano. In particolare, in questa terra riveste un ruolo importante, economico ed estetico, il paesaggio viticolo, frutto delle complesse interazioni, avvenute nel corso dei millenni, tra l'uomo e i diversi elementi dell'ambiente fisico: suolo, litologia, morfologia e topo-clima. La superficie vitata del Sannio, nella sua interazione con il rilievo, i suoli e la sottostante litologia, oltre alla produzione di vini di pregio, dà vita a scenari di particolare bellezza, ponendosi, in tal modo, come un importante attrattore turistico del territorio. Il paesaggio viticolo del Sannio, mostra tuttavia anche elementi di particolare fragilità, riconducibili all'impatto dell'uomo sul territorio e alla peculiarità del territorio stesso: l'uso degli agrochimici, le lavorazioni dei suoli, la forma del rilievo, la natura dei suoli, le caratteristiche dei substrati geologici, l'aggressività climatica, sono alcuni degli elementi che concorrono a determinare il rischio di degrado ambientale. Pertanto, il paesaggio viticolo del Sannio necessita di essere tutelato, con regole adeguate a preservare e garantire alle nuove generazioni le sue peculiarità estetiche e produttive. Una risposta concreta, in tal senso, è venuta dalle amministrazioni comunali delle più importanti aree viticole del Sannio, le quali hanno inserito nei Piani Urbanistici Comunali adeguate norme di gestione dei territori agricoli. Le azioni individuali delle singole Amministrazioni hanno trovato convergenza in un importante progetto PON-Governance, denominato BioWine (Biological Wine Innovative Enviroment). Esso rappresenta un importante esempio di trasferimento di know-how e buone pratiche tra i diversi comuni aderenti al progetto, sui temi della tutela dell'ambiente, oltre che dell'innovazione tecnologica in agricoltura e del marketing territoriale. Il presente Capitolo illustra sinteticamente l'approccio metodologico ed i risultati ottenuti nello studio del Paesaggio BioWine del Sannio Beneventano.

Knowledge of field-scale soil variability is essential for sustainable soil management. Traditional techniques, based on soil analysis, are costly and timeconsuming. An alternative method would be the use of visible-infrared reflectance spectroscopy coupled with multivariate analysis, specifically principal component analysis (PCA) and geostatistics. In this study, after brief reviews regarding reflectance spectroscopy, PCA, and geostatistics, we presented a methodological approach for digital soil mapping in a study area of Southern Italy. Reflectance spectra of 240 surface soil samples collected at geo-referenced sites, were decomposed by PCA. The first three components (PC1, PC2, PC3) explained most (98%) of the total variance of the initial data set, therefore, they were considered for the assessment of soil spatial variability by variography and kriging (geostatistics). The resulting PC1, PC2 and PC3 kriging maps were interpreted in the light of the information contents on reflectance spectra and compared with the results of a previous, conventional soil survey. The presented strategy seems to be efficient and reliable for mapping soil spatial variability.

Lo sviluppo e la crescita della vite, la maturazione dell'uva e gli attributi sensoriali del vino sono fortemente influenzati dall'ambiente fisico in cui la pianta è coltivata. In viticoltura, le interazioni tra l'ambiente fisico e la pianta di vite sono riferite come "effetto terroir". Secondo una definizione proposta dalla International Organisation of Vine and Wine "il terroir viticolo rappresenta un concetto riferito ad un'area nella quale si sviluppa un sapere collettivo delle interazioni tra ambiente fisico, ambiente biologico e pratiche vitivinicole, che conferiscono le caratteristiche distintive ai prodotti provenienti da quest'area. Il terroir include le caratteristiche specifiche del suolo, della topografia, del paesaggio e della biodiversità". Il concetto di terroir integra due gruppi di fattori fondamentali, quelli naturali (clima, suolo, roccia, morfologia) e quelli umani, che ne assicurano collettivamente la valorizzazione, attraverso la produzione. I fattori naturali rappresentano gli elementi più stabili della catena, alla scala umana; per contro, le condizioni climatiche dell'annata ("millesimo"), il materiale vegetale ed i fattori d'intervento umano rappresentano gli elementi variabili della stessa catena, in quanto possono subire profondi cambiamenti nel corso del tempo. I fattori naturali del terroir, sebbene relativamente stabili nel tempo, variano nello spazio. Una determinata area viticola corrisponde ad un territorio nel quale si esprime una variabilità più o meno grande di questi fattori che influenzano le performances vegeto-produttive della pianta e, quindi, le caratteristiche sensoriali del vino, determinando l'esigenza di modificare le pratiche agronomiche ed enologiche. Pertanto, la conoscenza della variabilità dei fattori naturali del terroir di un'area viticola diventa un elemento essenziale per ottimizzarne l'uso, al fine di migliorare la qualità dei vini, esaltarne la tipicità ed autenticarne l'origine. In un'ottica di viticoltura di terroir, il primo obiettivo pratico da perseguire è la suddivisione (zonazione) del territorio viticolo in ambiti omogenei (di gestione e di produzione) dal punto di vista dei fattori naturali del terroir. L'effetto del terroir può essere considerato a diverse scale: regionale, intra- regionale (o di distretto) e aziendale. A seconda della scala analizzata, la gerarchia dell'effetto dei fattori del terroir può variare. A scala regionale, o ancor più alla scala di un intero Paese, il macroclima è probabilmente il fattore dominante; a scala intra-regionale, o di distretto e scala comunale, gli effetti della geologia, della geomorfologia e del topo-clima possono essere considerati i fattori determinanti nella crescita e sviluppo della vite e nella composizione dell'uva. La variabilità a scala di tenuta può essere correlata a una variazione nei tipi e nella profondità dei suoli. Pertanto, nello studio dei terroir, il problema della scala è un aspetto molto importante da affrontare. Il Volume, dopo un inquadramento generale dell'area di studio, illustra la variabilità spaziale della superficie vitata di Castel Campagnano e concentra l'attenzione sugli aspetti climatici generali del territorio comunale di Castel Campagnano, per poi valutare le relazioni tra alcuni parametri climatici influenti sulla fisiologia e sulla produzione della vite e la morfometria del predetto territorio. Sulla base di tali relazioni sono state prodotte le Carte della distribuzione spaziale dei parametri climatici. Dall'analisi morfometrica, sono state invece prodotte una serie di Carte di parametri morfometrici influenti sullo sviluppo della vite, sulla maturazione dell'uva e sugli attributi sensoriali del vino, oltre che sulla gestione agrotecnica e ambientale dei vigneti e, più in generale, dell'intero territorio comunale. Le carte morfometriche, combinate con lo studio e la cartografia della litologia dominante e della fisiografia, hanno consentito di produrre una prima Carta delle Unità di Paesaggio del territorio di Castel Campagnano, assimilabili ad Unità di terroir naturali. Infine, la Carta delle Unità di terroir Naturali, incrociata con la Carta della superficie vitata, ha consentito di relazionare i vigneti attuali alle variabili analizzate dell'ambiente fisico in cui gli stessi vigneti ricadono e formulare ipotesi sulle potenziali performance della vite.

Since the last decades of nineteenth century, Italian rivers experienced remarkable morphological changes. Most of the previously investigated river channels were affected by intense human disturbances, which were frequently indicated as the main control factor. In contrast, the Tammaro River (southern Italy) underwent less complex human interventions than other Italian rivers, at least since the recent closure of the Campolattaro Dam in the median zone of the catchment. Thus, it represents a good example to analyze the effects of changes in climate and land use on short-term channel adjustments. In this paper, the channel adjustments experienced by the Tammaro River over a period of ~140 yr (1870–2011) were investigated. The study integrated results from GIS-based geomorphological and land-use analysis, field surveys, and analysis of hydrological data (rainfall, flow discharges, extreme floods). From the last decades of nineteenth century to the mid 1930s, the river experienced widening and a slight increase in transitional channel morphologies (Phase-1). From the 1930s to the late 1990s, the river underwent a marked narrowing and limited to moderate incision (Phase-2). The geomorphological effects of the 1949 extreme flood were superimposed on the Phase-2 response. Finally, from 1990s onwards (Phase-3), the river experienced substantial stability with respect to the changes during the previous phases and different behaviors at the reach scale. During Phase-3, changes in channel morphology were observed a few years after the closure of the Campolattaro Dam. The morpho-evolutionary phases observed for the Tammaro River were very similar, even if slightly diachronous, to those reported in the literature for more anthropized rivers of southern Italy.

Texture is one of the most important physical property of the soils for its influence on other fundamental properties. It is defined according to particle size distribution, that can be accurately measured in laboratory. However, these measurements are costly and very time consuming, therefore valid alternatives are necessary. In last years some statistical techniques have been used to predict textural classification using values of reflectance spectrometry as explicative variables. The estimation of the model parameters can be not too accurate, affecting prediction when there is multicollinearity among predictors. Another issue can be the great number of explicative variables usually necessary to explain the response. In order to improve the accuracy of the prediction in classification problems under multicollinearity and to reduce the dimension of the problem with continuous covariates, in this paper we introduce a new technique, based on classification and dimension reduction methods. We show how the new proposal can improve the accuracy of prediction, considering a problem concerning the textural classification of soils of Campania region.

Soil contamination with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is one the most relevant environmental problem in the SIN (Site of National Interest) of Taranto (Apulia Region, Southern Italy) and the surrounding area. Evaluation of PCB contents and their spatial distribution is an essential pre-requisite for soil remediation. Conventional laboratory analyses, although useful and irreplaceable for a precise and detailed evaluation of these contaminants, are costly and time-consuming, thus not very suitable for investigation over large areas. Then, there is a need to develop/validate alternative, rapid and cost-effective techniques, to use as substitutive of integrative to conventional analytical approaches. In this study, the usefulness of soil colour, based on spectrometric measurements, coupled with regression analysis, was assessed. Until now, never an analogous investigation has been realised. Twenty-eight soil samples, previously collected within an area (the ex-MATRA) highly contaminated by the disposal of oil used as dielectric fluid, composed by a mixture of PCB congeners, were used in the investigation. Colour coordinates in different colour systems were calculated from spectroradiometric measurements over the soil samples. Eighteen PCB congeners (i.e. 12 dioxin-like PCBs and six non-dioxin-like "indicator" PCBs), their sum (PCBs ) and the extractable organic halogen content (EOX)--which is an expression of the total content of halogen in organochlorine compounds, including the PCBs--were determined through conventional laboratory analysis. Simple linear regression analysis was carried out to predict the values of PCBs and EOX on the basis of colour variables. Excellent predictive models (R > 0.80) for PCBs and EOX, as well as for some of the individual PCB congener, resulted from the regression analysis. Thus, spectroscopic determination of soil colour can be considered as a promising tool for a rapid screening of PCBs in contaminated soils. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

Soil contamination is a widespread problem in the World, especially in the more developed and industrialized Countries. In Italy, about 12000 potentially contaminated sites were recorded in 2004 by the regional environmental bureaus and by the National Environmental Protection Agency (APAT), now Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA). Fifty-eight of these sites, subsequently reviewed and reduced to forty-one, have been recognised by the Italian Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea (MATTM) as Sites of National Interest (SIN), on the basis of their characteristics, the quantity and hazardousness of pollutants, the extent of the health and ecological risks, and the detriment to cultural and environmental heritage. A site of particular attention, because of the high risk of soil contamination, includes the SIN of Taranto (Apulia Region, Southern Italy) and a surrounding area of about 564 km2 (Area di Crisi Ambientale). Soil contaminants on this site are both organic or inorganic elements and compounds. The main organic contaminants include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, PCDDs), furans, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and volatile compounds, while the main inorganic contaminants are heavy metals. Soil reclamation of these compounds needs careful analysis in order to define their concentrations and spatial distribution. Conventional laboratory analyses, although useful and practically irreplaceable for a precise and detailed evaluation of soil contaminants, are costly and time-consuming. Thus, there is a need to assess alternative, rapid and cost-effective methods for the characterization of these contaminants, to use as substitutive or integrative of conventional laboratory analysis. In recent years, reflectance spectroscopy, that is the ratio of the spectral radiant flux reflected from a soil surface to the spectral radiant impinging on it in the visible-Near Infrared (vis-NIR) domain (350-2500 nm), has proved to be a useful technique for the prediction of various soil pollutants and other soil properties. It is based on the principle that the characteristics of radiation reflected from a material are a function of the chemical and physical properties of the material, thus, observations on soil reflectance can provide information on its properties. To date, many studies pertaining to the use of reflectance spectroscopy for the prediction of soil contaminants have been focused on heavy metals. Some research has regarded organic contaminants and limited research has ever covered polychlorinated compounds and, in particular, PCBs. Therefore, a preliminary study was carried out in a study area to assess the capability of vis-NIR spectroscopy, combined with Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) analysis, for the prediction of PCBs and extractable organic halogen content (EOX), which is an expression of the total content of halogen in organochlorine compounds, including the PCBs. These compounds are very dangerous for both environment and human health, because of their toxicity and tendency to bioaccumulate; they tend to persist for long periods in the environment and they can easily cycle between air, water, and soil because of their resistance to acids, bases, oxidation and hydrolysis. The investigated area, contiguous the SIN of Taranto, falls within the so-called area "PIP" (Production Settlement Plan) of the municipality of Statte and specifically, it regards an area outside the ex-MATRA, a former engineering industry, within 100 m from it. For fourteen years (from 1984 to 1998) the ex-MATRA has been involved in the maintenance of electrical transformers and, during its activity, significant quantities of waste containing PCBs have been stored in the soil, in a totally inadequate way, causing soil and subsoil contamination. Diffuse vis-NIR reflectance was measured in the laboratory on twenty-eight soil samples for the determination of eighteen PCBs congeners (i.e. twelve dioxin-like PCBs and six "indicators" PCBs non-dioxin-like), their sum (PCBs18), and EOX, previously determined through conventional laboratory analysis. Using PLSR, after pre-processing the reflectance spectra, excellent models were calibrated for the prediction of PCBs18 (R2adj = 0.91; RPD = 3.47), EOX (R2adj = 0.909; RPD = 3.40) and Hepta-CB (R2adj = 0.897; RPD = 3.24), while a good model was calibrated for Penta-CB (R2adj = 0.798; RPD = 2.27). The combined analysis of the PLSR regression coefficients and the Variable Importance in the Projection (VIP) allowed determining important wavelength for the prediction of the investigated variables. The results of the present study demonstrated that vis-NIR reflectance spectroscopy, coupled with PLSR, can be considered a promising, useful method for the rapid and low-cost prediction of PCBs18, as well as of Hepta-CB and Penta-CB congeners and EOX.

Soil contamination by heavy metals has become a severe and widespread environmental problem in the World, especially in the more developed and industrialized Countries. Heavy metals can occur naturally in soils, but often occur at enhanced levels due to anthropogenic activities such as mine tailings, disposal of high metal wastes, emissions from the rapidly expanding industrial areas, leaded gasoline and paints, land application of fertilizers, animal manures, sewage sludge, pesticides, wastewater irrigation, coal combustion residues, spillage of petrochemicals, and atmospheric deposition. When released into the soil, heavy metals can be adsorbed on to soil particle, broken down through chemical reactions, or leached to groundwater. Due to the fact that heavy metals cannot be decomposed like organic contaminants through chemical or biological processes, they are considered as stable and durable contaminants. Soil contamination by heavy metals has been proved to be a major environmental threat in the so-called Environmental Crisis Area of Taranto (Apulia Region, Southern Italy), of about 564 km2, including the SIN (Site of National Interest) of Taranto and in a wider surrounding area. Soil reclamation of heavy metals needs careful analysis in order to define their concentrations and spatial distribution. Conventional laboratory analyses, although usefully and practically irreplaceable for detailed investigations, are costly and time-consuming, thus not very suitable when large numbers of soil samples need to be analysed. Thus, there is a need to assess alternative, rapid and cost-effective methods for the characterization of these contaminants, to use as substitutive or integrative of conventional laboratory analysis. In recent years, reflectance spectroscopy, i.e. the ratio of the electromagnetic radiation reflected by a soil surface to that which impinges on it, in the visible-Near Infrared (vis-NIR) domain (350-2500 nm), has proved to be a promising technique for the efficient detection and monitoring of various soil contaminants as well as other soil properties. It is based on the principle that the characteristics of radiation reflected from a material are a function of the chemical and physical properties of the material, thus, observations on soil reflectance can provide information on its properties. Within the framework of the activities planned by the Government Commissioner for the urgent interventions of environmental remediation and rehabilitation of Taranto, a preliminary study was carried out to assess the capability of vis-NIR spectroscopy, combined with multivariate statistical methods, for the prediction of the concentration of fifteen heavy metals (Be, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, Sr, Sb, Hg, Tl, Pb) on 408 surface and sub-surface soil samples collected with the study area. The diffuse vis-NIR reflectance was measured in the laboratory on the air-dried and 2 mm-sieved soil samples, using a high-resolution FieldSpec Pro spectroradiometer. The measured vis-NIR reflectance spectra were quantitatively related to soil heavy metals using Partial Least Square Regression method (PLSR). PLSR was used to calibrate the spectral data with the reference (laboratory) soil data using two-thirds of the available samples for calibration and the remaining third to independently validate them. Spectral pre-processing methods (first and second derivatives, wavelet detrending) and spectra pre-treatment (mean centre), were employed after smoothing with median filtering, to improve the robustness and performance of the calibration models. Leave-one-out cross-validation was then used to determine the number of factors to retain in the calibration models. To select the optimal cross-validated calibration model, the root mean squared error (RMSE) of predictions was computed. To evaluate the accuracy of models the relative percent deviation (RPD), i.e., the ratio of the standard deviation of analysed data (i.e., the soil properties) to root means square error (RMSE), was considered. Very good predictions were obtained for Thallium, Tl (RPD = 2.04 for calibration and 1.88 for validation) and Chromium, Cr, (RPD = 2.03 and 1.91), and that for Beryllium, Be, was good (RPD = 1.83 and 1.89), whereas prediction for Vanadio, V, was fair (RPD = 1.68 and 1.55). Prediction for the remaining heavy metals was poor. The results of a recent investigation demonstrated that Be, V and Tl are the heavy metals with the greatest impact on soil contamination (as evaluated with reference to the so-called "concentration threshold of contamination" set by law for urban and agricultural areas) in the study area. Therefore, following the outcomes of our preliminary investigation, vis-NIR reflectance spectroscopy can be considered as a promising, innovative technique for the characterisation and monitoring of heavy metals, at least those of greater attention, within the study area, although further insights need to be carried out.

La contaminazione dei suoli da policlorobifenili (PCB) è un problema di grande rilevanza in diverse aree indu- striali d'Italia. La valutazione del contenuto e della distribuzione spaziale di questi composti organici è un prerequisito essenziale per le attività di caratterizzazione e riquali cazione di siti contaminati. Le analisi convenzionali di laboratorio, sebbene utili e praticamente insostituibili per una precisa e dettagliata valutazione della presenza di questi contaminanti, sono costose e richiedono tempi lunghi, quindi sono poco idonee per indagini su aree vaste; da qui, la necessità di sviluppare/validare tecniche alternative rapide e a basso costo da utilizzare come sostitutive o integrative delle analisi convenzionali. Nel presente studio sono state valutate le potenzialità del colore del suolo, basato su misure spettroradiometriche, combinato con l'analisi statistica di regressione, per la predizione del contenuto di PCB. A tal fine, sono stati utilizzati 28 campioni di suolo, prelevati in un'area industriale dismessa della provincia di Taranto (ex-MATRA), fortemente contaminata dallo sversamento di oli utilizzati come fluidi dielettrici, composti da una miscela di diversi congeneri di PCB. Per i predetti campioni sono state determinate le coordinate del colore in differenti sistemi colorimetrici. Attraverso analisi convenzionali di laboratorio, per gli stessi campioni sono stati determinati i contenuti di PCB (diciotto congeneri e la loro somma) oltre che di alogeni organici estraibili (Extractable Organic Halogens, EOX). Per predire i valori di PCB e di EOX in funzione delle variabili del colore del suolo, è stata condotta un'analisi statistica di regressione lineare semplice, dalla quale sono stati ottenuti modelli predittivi eccellenti (R2>0.80).

La valorizzazione dei comprensori agricoli di pregio, in particolare di quelli viti-vinicoli, non può prescindere dalla corretta anali- si delle componenti "naturali" del paesaggio (rilievo, suoli e sottostante geolitologia, clima) che, interagendo tra di loro e con la gestione antropica, determinano le potenzialità produttive e le limitazioni d'uso dei predetti comprensori, oltre ad influenzarne l'aspetto estetico. Tali componenti rappresentano, pertanto, gli elementi fondamentali da considerare nella pianificazione del territorio fon- data sull'equilibrio tra validità agronomica e qualità paesaggistica, sviluppo sostenibile e valorizzazione delle aree urbane e rurali. Per offrire alle Amministrazioni locali uno strumento urbanistico multidisciplinare attento a questi obiettivi, a partire dal 1996 l'Associa- zione Nazionale delle Città del Vino si è impegnata nell'individuazione di alcune linee guida metodologiche per la valorizzazione dei comprensori vitivinicoli di qualità nella disciplina territoriale e urbanistica. Alle linee guida proposte dalle Città del Vino ha fatto riferimento Castelvenere, il comune più vitato della Campania (circa il 67% del territorio comunale è occupato da vigneti) per la realizzazione del suo Piano Urbanisti- co Comunale. L'adozione delle linee guida implica l'acquisizione e/o la disponibilità di corrette informazioni riguardanti le caratteristiche e la distribuzione spaziale (cartografia) delle di- verse componenti "naturali" del paesaggio. Nella realizzazione del PUC, il Comune di Castelvenere si è potuto avvantaggiare di una considerevole mole di informazioni prodotte da ricerche riguardanti l'intero territorio del Sannio Beneventano, realizzate dall'Istituto per Sistemi Agricoli e Forestali del Mediterraneo (ISAFoM) del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), in collaborazione con Istituzioni di ricerca ed universitarie nazionali ed internazionali. Tali informazioni, rielaborate ed integrate da quelle prodotte da indagini realizzate per gli scopi specifici del PUC, hanno consentito di caratterizzare e cartografare il territorio comunale in esame dal punto di vista dell'uso del suolo, geomorfologico-morfometrico, fisiografico e pedologico. In particolare, sono state prodotte: una Carta dell'uso del suolo, le Carte morfometriche delle quote, delle pendenze, delle esposizioni, dell'insolazione, dell'indice topografico di umidità e del fattore topografico di erosione. Le Carte morfometriche sono state realizzate a partire da un modello digitale del terreno. Tenuto conto delle relazioni quote-temperature, è stata realizzata una Carta dell'indice bioclimatico di Winkler. È stata prodotta una Carta delle Unità di paesaggio, basata sulla variabilità spaziale delle forme del rilievo e della litologia dominante, tenuto conto degli aspetti morfometrici. Ciascuna Unità di paesaggio è stata caratterizzata dal punto di vista pedologico, per produrre una Carta dei suoli. Incrociando le informa- zioni contenute nelle Carte dei suoli e delle pendenze con le esigenze della vite, desunte dalla letteratura specialistica, è stata generata una Carta delle attitudini del territorio alla viticoltura. Inoltre, sono state studiate statisticamente le relazioni tra Unità suolo-paesaggio e caratteristiche compositive delle uve della cultivar Falanghina, per produrre una Carta della zonazione viticola della stessa cultivar. Infine, utilizzando immagini telerilevate da satellite, è stata realizzata una Carta dell'indice normalizzato di vegetazione, strettamente correlato al vigore vegetativo dei vigneti. Tutti gli elaborati cartografici sono stati organizzati in un GIS-geodatabase e, in questo formato, utilizzati come elementi strutturali in suppor- to alla realizzazione del PUC. La metodologia adottata per il PUC di Castelvenere, piuttosto che una mera elencazione di regole, potrebbe rappresentare un esempio pratico da seguire nella realizzazione di altre indagini finalizzate alla pianificazione territoriale e urbanistica dei comprensori viticoli e, più in generale, di quelli agricoli.

The present study focuses on the morphotectonic evolution of the axial portion of the Southern Apennine chain between the lower Calore River valley and the northern Camposauro mountain front (Campania Region). A multidisciplinary approach was used, including geomorphological, field-geology, stratigraphical, morphotectonic, structural, Ar-40/Ar-39 and tephrostratigraphical data. Results indicate that, from the Lower Pleistocene onwards, this sector of the chain was affected by extensional tectonics responsible for the onset of the sedimentation of Quaternary fluvial, alluvial fan and slope deposits. Fault systems are mainly composed of NW-SE, NE-SW and W-E trending strike-slip and normal faults, associated to NW-SE and NE-SW oriented extensions. Fault scarps, stratigraphical and structural data and morphotectonic indicators suggest that these faults affected the wide piedmont area of the northern Camposauro mountain front in the Lower Pleistocene-Upper Pleistocene time span. Faults affected both the oldest Quaternary slope deposits (Laiano Synthem, Lower Pleistocene) and the overlying alluvial fan system deposits constrained between the late Middle Pleistocene and the Holocene. The latter are geomorphologically and chrono-stratigraphically grouped into four generations, I generation: late Middle Pleistocene-early Upper Pleistocene, with tephra layers Ar-40/Ar-39 dated to 158 +/- 6 and 113 +/- 7 ka; II generation: Upper Pleistocene, with tephra layers correlated with the Campanian Ignimbrite (39ka) and with the slightly older Campi Flegrei activity (Ar-40/Ar-39 age 48 +/- 7 ka); III generation: late Upper Pleistocene-Lower Holocene, with tephra layers correlated with the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (15ka); IV generation: Holocene in age. The evolution of the first three generations was controlled by Middle Pleistocene extensional tectonics, while Holocene fans do not show evidence of tectonic activity. Nevertheless, considering the moderate to high magnitude historical seismicity of the study area, we cannot rule out that some of the recognized faults may still be active. The aim of this work is to present a method for “intelligent”, field-scale digital soil mapping based on visible-near infrared (vis-NIR) reflectance spectroscopy, in combination with statistical analysis (Principal Component Analysis, PCA and geostatistics). The study was carried out in a site of southern Italy. With reference to a 50 × 50 cell size grid, 240 soil samples were collected to a depth of 20–30 cm. The soil was analyzed by vis-NIR reflectance spectroscopy and the data were decomposed by PCA. The first three components (PC1, PC2, PC3) explained 98% of the total variance of the initial data set and therefore they were selected for the assessment of soil spatial variability by variography and kriging (geostatistics). The resulting PC1, PC2 and PC3 kriging maps were interpreted in the light of the information contents on reflectance spectra and compared with the results of a previous, conventional soil survey. The presented strategy seems to be efficient and reliable to use, when mapping soil spatial variability. * Corresponding author
