Abstract

Conventional fluorescence sensing, despite its high sensitivity, is poorly suited for point-of-need applications due to the bulkiness and cost constraints of standard components. An urgent market demand exists for integrated, portable, and high-performance solutions. Here, an efficient and miniaturized fluorescence sensor is demonstrated by innovative integration on a single substrate of organic optoelectronic devices, such as an organic photodiode and an organic light-emitting diode, with a polymeric distributed Bragg reflector. Optical modeling of the 3D layout of integration of the three all-organic components allows maximizing the optical efficiency of the sensing system, which outperforms that of state-of-the-art miniaturized fluorescence sensors by two orders of magnitude. Accordingly, fluorescence signals from microfluidic volumes of Rhodamine 700 are detected by the sensor over a wide range of dye concentrations, ranging from 10−3 M to 10−6 M. The optimized exploitation of the angular dependence of the distributed Bragg reflector filter characteristics provides a remarkable reduction of the undesired optical signal of excitation. As a result, a significant increase of the signal-to-noise ratio allows for halving the detection limit of Rhodamine 700 down to 9.2 μM, thus demonstrating the possible implementation of such innovative integrated detection scheme for biodiagnostics. 12. Mechanisms of Step-Stress Degradation in Carbon-Doped 0.15-μm AlGaN/GaN HEMTs for Power RF Applications

Abstract

We discuss the degradation mechanisms of C-doped 0.15- $\mu \text{m}$ gate AlGaN/GaN HEMTs tested by drain step-stress experiments. Experimental results show that these devices exhibit cumulative degradation effects during the step-stress experiments in terms of either (i) transconductance ( $g_{\mathrm{ m}}$ ) decrease without any threshold-voltage ( $V_{\mathrm{ T}}$ ) change under OFF-state stress, or (ii) both $V_{\mathrm{ T}}$ increase and $g_{\mathrm{ m}}$ decrease under ON-state stress conditions. To aid the interpretation of the experiments, two-dimensional hydrodynamic device simulations were carried out. Based on the obtained results, we attribute the $g_{\mathrm{ m}}$ decrease accumulating under OFF-state stress to hole emission from CN acceptor traps in the gate-drain access region of the buffer, resulting in an increase in the drain access resistance. On the other hand, under ON-state stress, channel hot electrons are injected into the buffer under the gate and in the gate-drain region where they are captured by CN traps, leading to $V_{\mathrm{ T}}$ and $g_{\mathrm{ m}}$ degradation, respectively.

33. Reaction to fire properties of wood waste-based geopolymers panels

Abstract

Wood waste, possibly originating from deconstruction of buildings is processed to obtain fine fractions which are further embedded into innovative high performance prefabricated geopolymeric panel, intended to be used as façade panels or internal lining. For these uses reaction to fire (RtF) is one of the most important characteristics. Inside the EU InnoWEE project (Innovative pre-fabricated components including different waste construction materials reducing building energy and minimising environmental impacts) this aspect is studied on the innovative panels. As the material's basis is inorganic there is a possibility of compliance to high demanding reaction to fire classes (non-combustible materials). Furthermore as there are different variants of the material that may also include CDW wood chips, it is important to understand how the variable content of wood chips influences critical parameters for the RtF. Different variants of CDW geopolymers based panels were assessed with respect to the reaction to fire, using cone calorimeter. Results have shown that CDW panels containing 20% of wood comply to the A2 class and are suitable for all uses, with respect to fire. Higher wood content (maximum 50% of wood chips) yields hardly combustible materials.

Abstract

[Image: see text] Although it is theoretically expected that all organic semiconductors support ambipolar charge transport, most organic transistors either transport holes or electrons effectively. Single-layer ambipolar organic field-effect transistors enable the investigation of different mechanisms in hole and electron transport in a single device since the device architecture provides a controllable planar pn-junction within the transistor channel. However, a direct comparison of the injection barriers and of the channel conductivities between electrons and holes within the same device cannot be measured by standard electrical characterization. This article introduces a novel approach for determining threshold gate voltages for the onset of the ambipolar regime from the position of the pn-junction observed by photoluminescence electro-modulation (PLEM) microscopy. Indeed, the threshold gate voltage in the ambipolar bias regime considers a vanishing channel length, thus correlating the contact resistance. PLEM microscopy is a valuable tool to directly compare the contact and channel resistances for both carrier types in the same device. The reported results demonstrate that designing the metal/organic–semiconductor interfaces by aligning the bulk metal Fermi levels to the highest occupied molecular orbital or lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels of the organic semiconductors is a too simplistic approach for optimizing the charge-injection process in organic field-effect devices.

Abstract

In this multi-methodological study, microstructural 51 observations of fault rocks arecombined with micromechanical property analyses (Contact Resonance Atomic Force Microscopy, CR-AFM) and with rotary friction experiments (SHIVA apparatus) to find evidence of seismic to aseismic slip and understand the nanoscale rheology of clay-bearing, carbonate-hosted faults.Fluidized structures, truncated clasts, pores and vesicles, and phyllosilicate nano-sized spherules and tubes suggest fast deformation events occurred during seismic slip, whereas clay-assisted pressure-solution processes, clumped clasts, foliation surfaces, and mantled clasts indicate slow deformation events occurred during postseismic/interseismic periods. CR-AFM measurementsshow that the occurrence of ~5 wt.% of clay within the carbonate-hosted gouges can significantly reduce the fault core stiffness at nanoscale. In addition, during high-velocity friction experiments simulating seismic slip conditions, the presence of ultra-thin phyllosilicate-bearing (≤ 3 wt.%)layers within calcite gouges, as those observed in the natural fault, show faster dynamic weakening than that of pure calcite gouges. The weak behavior of such layers could facilitate the upward propagation of seismic slip during earthquakes, thus possibly enhancing surface faulting.Microstructural observations and experimental evidence fit some well-known geophysical and geodetic observations on the short- to long-term mechanical behavior of faults such as post67 seismic/interseismic aseismic creep, interseismic fault locking, and seismic slip propagation up tothe Earth’s surface.

Abstract

We have measured the adsorption of argon films on arrays of microscopic nonlinear cusps and of semicircular channels. In the former case, we observe a distinct crossover from a planarlike to a geometry dependent growth behavior near liquid-vapor bulk coexistence, characterized by a growth exponent χ equal to -0.96±0.04 in very good agreement with the predictions of a recent scaling theory [C. Rascon and A. O. Parry, J. Chem. Phys. 112, 5175 (2000)]. The crossover location is also consistent with theory. Instead, on the concave channels we find a much steeper growth near saturation that may signal the formation of two menisci at both sides of the channel bottom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
