Abstract

SPOrt is an ASI-funded experiment specifically designed to measure the sky polarization at 22, 32 and 90 GHz, which was selected in 1997 by ESA to be flown on the International Space Station. Starting in 2006 and for at least 18 months, it will be taking direct and simultaneous measurements of the Stokes parameters Q and U at 660 sky pixels, with FWHM=7 degrees. Due to development efforts over the past few years, the design specifications have been significantly improved with respect to the first proposal. Here we present an up-to-date description of the instrument, which now warrants a pixel sensitivity of 1.7 microK for the polarization of the cosmic background radiation, assuming two years of observations. Abstract

Our three frequencies radiometer MASTER which allows low noise observations in three frequency intervals around 90, 220 and 345 GHz is being completed. We discuss the possibility of exploiting the MASTER`s charachteristics for studies of the Sunyaev Zel`dovich effect from the Antarctic Plateau and propose an observational program from Dome C, Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

BaR-SPOrt (Balloon-borne Radiometers for Sky Polarisation Observations) is an experiment to measure the linearly polarized emission of sky patches at 32 and 90 GHz with sub-degree angular resolution. It is equipped with high sensitivity correlation polarimeters for simultaneous detection of both the U and Q stokes parameters of the incident radiation. On-axis telescope is used to observe angular scales where the expected polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMBP) peaks. This project shares most of the know-how and sophisticated technology developed for the SPOrt experiment onboard the International Space Station. The payload is designed to flight onboard long duration stratospheric balloons both in the Northern and Southern hemispheres where low foreground emission sky patches are accessible. Due to the weakness of the expected CMBP signal (in the range of microK), much care has been spent to optimize the instrument design with respect to the systematics generation, observing time efficiency and long term stability. 5. On the preferred length scale in the anisotropy field of extragalactic IRAS sources

Abstract

We investigate the existence and meaning of a preferred length in the large-scale distribution of 60-micron IRAS sources applying three tests to the 2-dimensional distribution on the celestial sphere, involving respectively the rms fluctuation and the correlation function of the source number density, and the peak number statistics. For HDM models we find a best value lambda_0 = 45-55 h^{-1} Mpc for the peak of the spectral function P(k), close to the preferred wavelength lambda = 30-40 h^{-1} Mpc of naive single-scale perturbation models. A feature should indeed be generated in this range by the anticorrelation region of xi(r), although it is not detected by recent Fourier transform analyses of redshift catalogs. Our tests provide acceptable fits for CDM models with either Omega = 0.3-0.5 or Omega = 0.1-0.2, in agreement with results in current literature. However, the quality of such fits is less satisfactory than for HDM models, with the exception of the peak number statistics, and we are not able to find a parameter interval satisfying all of our tests simultaneously. These results may indicate that the cosmic spectrum is more complicated than the smooth shapes predicted by current theoretical models., Comment: L-aa file, 64 k. Abstract

This protocol aims to characterize patients with dual disorders (DD; comorbid major depression and schizophrenia) compared with patients with only a diagnosis of substance use disorder (SUD) and those with only a diagnosis of severe mental illness (SMI; major depression and schizophrenia), evaluating clinical and personality characteristics, circadian rhythmic functioning, genetic polymorphism and neuropsychological performance in order to obtain a clinical endophenotype of differential vulnerability for these diagnostic entities. Patients will be divided into three groups: DD (45 men with comorbid schizophrenia, 45 men and 30 women with major depression), SUD (n = 90, with a minimum of 30 women) and SMI males (45 with schizophrenia, 45 with major depression). All patients will be under treatment, with at least three months of SUD abstinence and/or with SMI in remission or with stabilized symptoms. Outpatients of both sexes with insufficient restoration of circadian rhythmicity with SUD (n = 30) and dual depression (n = 30) will be asked to participate in a second two-month study, being alternately assigned to the condition of the chronobiological adjuvant approach to the treatment of regular hour habits and exposure to light or to the usual treatment (control). The effect of the intervention and patient compliance will be monitored with a Kronowise KW6® ambulatory device during the first two weeks of treatment and again at weeks 4 and 8 weeks. After completing the evaluation, follow-up of the clinical evolution will be carried out at 3, 6 and 12 months. This project will allow us to analyze the functional impact of DD comorbidity and to develop the first study of chronobiological therapy in the treatment of SUD and dual depression, with results transferable to the clinical setting with cost-effective recommendations for a personalized approach.

Abstract

Cirrhosis has been long considered a risk factor for bleeding due to the co-existence of the so-called ‘coagulopathy’. More recently, however, compelling evidences have been provided on the occurrence of thrombotic events in the portal and systemic circulation.3–5 Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is predominantly observed in patients with moderate to severe liver failure with a variable prevalence ranging from 0.6 to 25%. Only fewstudies have provided a longitudinal assessment of the PVT incidence and its sequelae, including recurrence and survival.9–14 Due to the variability of PVT incidence and the paucity of data regarding recurrence and survival,15–20 we prospectively analysed the incidence and the recurrence of PVT in the population of Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: ItalianVenous thromboticEventsRegistry (PROLIVER), a multi-centre study,8 which involved 43 enrolling centres in Italy (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01470547).

Abstract

Summary: Background/objective: This study aimed to examine the association between body mass index (BMI) and school performance in high school students by controlling for relevant mediators such as sleep quality, sleep duration and socioeconomic status. Methods: Thirty-seven high school students (mean age: 18.16±0.44 years) attending the same school type, i.e. 'liceo scientifico' (science-based high school), were enrolled. Students' self-reported weight and height were used to calculate BMI. Participants wore an actigraph to objectively assess the quality and duration of sleep. School performance was assessed through the actual grade obtained at the final school-leaving exam, in which higher grades indicate higher performance. Results: BMI, get-up time, mean motor activity, wake after sleep onset and number of awakenings were negatively correlated with the grade, while sleep efficiency was positively correlated. When performing a multiple regression analysis, BMI proved the only significant (negative) predictor of grade. Conclusions: When controlling for sleep quality, sleep duration and socioeconomic status, a higher BMI is associated with a poorer school performance in high school students. Copyright

Abstract

The article examines the history of the first three printed editions of Dante’s Commedia (1472; Foligno, Mantua, and Iesi/Venice), analyzing their respective vicissitudes from a socio-economic perspective. Specifically, through a joint analysis of the relevant academic literature, the local socio-economic history, and the material provenances recorded within numerous copies, the essay intends to highlight to what degree and form commercial events such as regional fairs influenced the development and distribution of typographic products in Italy in the 1470s.

Abstract

Aim The current study was conducted to evaluate the psychometric properties and analyze the convergent validity of the Italian version of the Mini Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ). In addition, it was aimed to put forward cut-off values to be used in screening protocols. Methods The MSQ was administered to 1830 participants (age range 18-87 years), of whom 1208 also completed the Sleep Disorder Questionnaire (age range 18-87 years). A subgroup of 187 (age range 18-71 years) participants was randomly chosen to test the test-retest reliability. A complete psychometric evaluation was performed on the MSQ. To study the validity of the tool, the Sleep Disorder Questionnaire was used as an external criterion to validate the MSQ. Using the Youden index, we calculated the cut-off values that performed best. Finally, we created receiver-operator curves to test the accuracy of each cut-off value identified. Results For the MSQ, Cronbach's alpha score was 0.77 while homogeneity was 0.26. Factorial analyses confirmed the presence of two dimensions: sleep (Cronbach's alpha 0.75; homogeneity 0.37) and wake (Cronbach's alpha 0.75; homogeneity 0.44). For each dimension, a cut-off value was identified (>16 and >14, respectively). Both cut-off values obtained an area under the curve higher than 0.80. Conclusions Psychometric evaluation of the MSQ was satisfactory. The cut-off values analyzed in the present study showed good performance. On the whole, the results of this study suggest that the MSQ can be a useful screening tool.

Abstract

Lo scopo del presente lavoro è di proporre una versione italiana di un questionario per la valutazione della tipologia circadiana in adolescenza. In base ai risultati emersi in una precedente ricerca si è deciso di replicare i dati ottenuti con il MEQ-A e di valutare le possibili alternative di due nuovi strumenti: la versione ridotta del MEQ-A e la DTS-A. Hanno partecipato alla ricerca 3018 ragazzi di età compresa tra gli 11 e i 16 ani. 1393 ragazzi hanno compilato il MEQ-A, 876 il MEQr-A e 749 la DTS-A. Nel complesso i risultati hanno confermato come strumento più idoneo a misurare la tipologia circadiana in adolescenza il MEQ-A. Sarebbe auspicabile in un prossimo futuro una validazione con criteri esterni.

47. Monitoring sleep with a smartphone accelerometer

Abstract

The present pilot study aimed to compare sleep estimation with a smartphone accelerometer to that of an actigraph accelerometer in healthy adults. Thirteen volunteers (four females; mean age 22.97 ± 3.44) simultaneously wore Actiwatch actigraphs and put the smartphone close to the pillow for at least four consecutive overnight recordings. On the whole, the agreement between the two devices was reasonably satisfactory for all sleep parameters considered (Total Sleep Time, Wake After Sleep Onset and Sleep Efficiency) but not for Sleep Onset Latency. To deeply understand the suitability of the smartphone in assessing sleep, future studies should necessarily use polysomnography.
