Abstract

In this paper slip measurements are described between the peripheral surfaces of knife and a not driven anvil cylinders in a high velocity, high quality cutting unit of a diaper production line. Laboratory tests have been carried out on a test bench with real scale components for possible on line application of the method. With reference to both starting and steady state conditions correlations with the process parameters have been found, achieving a very satisfactory reduction of the slip between the knife cylinder and the not driven anvil one. Accuracy evaluation of measurements allowed us to validate the obtained information and to evaluate the detection threshold of the measurement method in the present configuration The analysis of specific uncertainty contributions to the whole uncertainty could be also used, to further reduce the requested uncertainty of the measurement method.

Abstract

Homing abilities of lizards after experimental dislocations have been found to be well developed in several species. Following our preliminary findings in Podarcis siculus, the present paper reports a new series of experiments on homing performances and initial orientation behaviour upon release. For this purpose, three series of releases were performed at increasing distances from the home areas in which the lizards were captured (range 85–245 m). In each series, two groups of lizards were released: the route-based visual cues during displacement were denied to one of them (NVIS), but allowed for the other (YVIS). The results of initial orientation showed that both are significantly homeward oriented at all three distances tested. Male and female YVIS and female NVIS are similarly homeward oriented, while the male NVIS are not. All 74 lizards successfully returned to their respective home areas. Eleven lizards homed on the same day they were released, while most of them homed during the 1st day after release (n = 51) and the rest on the 2nd day (n = 12). The different transport treatments did not influence homing success at the different distances tested. These results seem to support the use of a geocentric pilotage strategy to re-enter home from the release spot. Alternatively, the possibility that P. siculus use a sun compass and a mosaic map to find their way home is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We study Plurality Consensus in the Gossip Model over a network of $n$ anonymous agents. Each agent supports an initial opinion or color. We assume that at the onset, the number of agents supporting the plurality color exceeds that of the agents supporting any other color by a sufficiently-large bias. The goal is to provide a protocol that, with high probability, brings the system into the configuration in which all agents support the (initial) plurality color. We consider the Undecided-State Dynamics, a well-known protocol which uses just one more state (the undecided one) than those necessary to store colors. We show that the speed of convergence of this protocol depends on the initial color configuration as a whole, not just on the gap between the plurality and the second largest color community. This dependence is best captured by a novel notion we introduce, namely, the monochromatic distance ${md}(\bar{\mathbf{c}})$ which measures the distance of the initial color configuration $\bar{ \mathbf {c}}$ from the closest monochromatic one. In the complete graph, we prove that, for a wide range of the input parameters, this dynamics converges within $O({md}(\bar {\mathbf {c}}) \log {n})$ rounds. We prove that this upper bound is almost tight in the strong sense: Starting from any color configuration $\bar {\mathbf {c}}$, the convergence time is $\Omega({md}(\bar {\mathbf {c}}))$. Finally, we adapt the Undecided-State Dynamics to obtain a fast, random walk-based protocol for plurality consensus on regular expanders. This protocol converges in $O({md}(\bar {\mathbf {c}}) \mathrm{polylog}(n))$ rounds using only $\mathrm{polylog}(n)$ local memory. A key-ingredient to achieve the above bounds is a new analysis of the maximum node congestion that results from performing $n$ parallel random walks on regular expanders. Abstract

We report on the initial analysis of Herschel/HIFI carbon monoxide (CO) observations of the Martian atmosphere performed between 11 and 16 April 2010. We selected the (7-6) rotational transitions of the isotopes ^{13}CO at 771 GHz and C^{18}O at 768 GHz in order to retrieve the mean vertical profile of temperature and the mean volume mixing ratio of carbon monoxide. The derived temperature profile agrees within less than 5 K with general circulation model (GCM) predictions up to an altitude of 45 km, however, show about 12-15 K lower values at 60 km. The CO mixing ratio was determined as 980 \pm 150 ppm, in agreement with the 900 ppm derived from Herschel/SPIRE observations in November 2009., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (special issue on HIFI first results); minor changes to match published version

Abstract

Background and aim: Over 80% (365/454) of the nation’s centers participated in the Italian Society of Nephrology COVID-19 Survey. Out of 60,441 surveyed patients, 1368 were infected as of April 23rd, 2020. However, center-specific proportions showed substantial heterogeneity. We therefore undertook new analyses to identify explanatory factors, contextual effects, and decision rules for infection containment. Methods: We investigated fixed factors and contextual effects by multilevel modeling. Classification and Regression Tree (CART) analysis was used to develop decision rules. Results: Increased positivity among hemodialysis patients was predicted by center location [incidence rate ratio (IRR) 1.34, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.20–1.51], positive healthcare workers (IRR 1.09, 95% CI 1.02–1.17), test-all policy (IRR 5.94, 95% CI 3.36–10.45), and infected proportion in the general population (IRR 1.002, 95% CI 1.001–1.003) (all p < 0.01). Conversely, lockdown duration exerted a protective effect (IRR 0.95, 95% CI 0.94–0.98) (p < 0.01). The province-contextual effects accounted for 10% of the total variability. Predictive factors for peritoneal dialysis and transplant cases were center location and infected proportion in the general population. Using recursive partitioning, we identified decision thresholds at general population incidence ≥ 229 per 100,000 and at ≥ 3 positive healthcare workers. Conclusions: Beyond fixed risk factors, shared with the general population, the increased and heterogeneous proportion of positive patients is related to the center’s testing policy, the number of positive patients and healthcare workers, and to contextual effects at the province level. Nephrology centers may adopt simple decision rules to strengthen containment measures timely.

Abstract

This work would like to provide a preliminary contribution to the draft of standard procedures for the adoption of Total Stations by rescuers in emergency situations, so as to offer a reliable and effective support to their assessment activities. In particular, some considerations will be made regarding the effect of the number and positioning of monitoring points on the tilt determination of a building façade, in order to set up simplified procedures, which are quick and easy to implement in emergency situations, at the same time guaranteeing the reliability of the results. Two types of building will be taken into account as test cases, which have different characteristics in terms of height, distance and angle with respect to the Total Station. Some considerations will be made about the aspects to be explored in future work, for the calibration of the method as a whole and the definition of all the steps of a procedure for the evaluation of the safety of a building.

Abstract

International audience; The computation of electrical flows is a crucial primitive for many recently proposed optimization algorithms on weighted networks. While typically implemented as a centralized subroutine, the ability to perform this task in a fully decentralized way is implicit in a number of biological systems. Thus, a natural question is whether this task can provably be accomplished in an efficient way by a network of agents executing a simple protocol. We provide a positive answer, proposing two distributed approaches to electrical flow computation on a weighted network: a deterministic process mimicking Jacobi's iterative method for solving linear systems, and a randomized token diffusion process, based on revisiting a classical random walk process on a graph with an absorbing node. We show that both processes converge to a solution of Kirchhoff's node potential equations, derive bounds on their convergence rates in terms of the weights of the network, and analyze their time and message complexity.

Abstract

Consensus and Broadcast are two fundamental problems in distributed computing, whose solutions have several applications. Intuitively, Consensus should be no harder than Broadcast, and this can be rigorously established in several models. Can Consensus be easier than Broadcast? In models that allow noiseless communication, we prove a reduction of (a suitable variant of) Broadcast to binary Consensus, that preserves the communication model and all complexity parameters such as randomness, number of rounds, communication per round, etc., while there is a loss in the success probability of the protocol. Using this reduction, we get, among other applications, the first logarithmic lower bound on the number of rounds needed to achieve Consensus in the uniform GOSSIP model on the complete graph. The lower bound is tight and, in this model, Consensus and Broadcast are equivalent. We then turn to distributed models with noisy communication channels that have been studied in the context of some bio-inspired systems. In such models, only one noisy bit is exchanged when a communication channel is established between two nodes, and so one cannot easily simulate a noiseless protocol by using error-correcting codes. An $\Omega(\epsilon^{-2} n)$ lower bound on the number of rounds needed for Broadcast is proved by Boczkowski et al. [PLOS Comp. Bio. 2018] in one such model (noisy uniform PULL, where $\epsilon$ is a parameter that measures the amount of noise). In such model, we prove a new $\Theta(\epsilon^{-2} n \log n)$ bound for Broadcast and a $\Theta(\epsilon^{-2} \log n)$ bound for binary Consensus, thus establishing an exponential gap between the number of rounds necessary for Consensus versus Broadcast.

Abstract

According to many studies, extracorporeal dialysis with convective methods is associated with better clinical outcomes and a survival benefit compared to diffusive techniques. However, there is no full agreement on the actual superiority of this kind of renal replacement therapy on hard end-points such as mortality. We performed a retrospective epidemiological cohort study to provide "real-world" evidence on the impact of convective and non-convective dialysis techniques on all-cause and cardiac mortality and biochemical outcomes among dialysis patients in Sicily, the southernmost region of Italy. Data of all incident adult patients (N = 6529) who have started chronic extracorporeal dialysis over the period 2009-2015 were retrieved from the Sicilian Registry of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation. There were 1558 patients receiving convective techniques (23.86%). Overall mortality rate was 45.21% with a significant difference between convective (31.39%) and non-convective (49.55%) groups (P 0.0001). After adjustment for potential confounders in multiple Cox regression models of increasing complexity, the mortality risk remained significantly lower for patients treated with convective methods (HR, 0.581; 95%CI, 0.525 to 0.643; P 0.0001). Moreover, the convective group had a better blood chemistry profile, improved dialysis efficacy, and reduced mortality rate from cardiac diseases compared to the non-convective group. As a sensitivity analysis, patients were categorized according to propensity score quartiles and the hazard ratio for both all-cause and cardiac mortality was significantly lower for the convective group in each quartile. In conclusion, despite the observational and retrospective design, the results of the present study further support the use of convective therapies for the treatment of end-stage renal disease.
