Abstract

We investigate acoustic emission (AE) that arises during the martensitic transition in a polycrystalline specimen of the prototypical superelastic/elastocaloric alloy Ni$_{50.4}$Ti$_{49.6}$ (at. %) driven using tensile strain. We use two independent AE sensors in order to locate AE events, and focus on contributions to the AE that arise away from the grips of the mechanical testing machine. Significant AE activity is present during the first mechanical loading primarily due to nucleation and growth of wide L\"uders-like bands during the forward martensitic transition (imaged using visible light and infrared (IR) radiation) that lead to persistent changes in intergranular interactions. AE activity is suppressed during the subsequent reverse martensitic transition on unloading, and in successive loading/unloading cycles, for which the L\"uders-like bands narrow and modify intergranular interactions to much less extent. After the first loading, we find that the AE activity associated with the martensitic transition is weak, and we suggest that this is because the elastic anisotropy and strain incompatibility in Ni-Ti are low. We also find that the AE activity becomes weaker on mechanically cycling due to increased retained martensite., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Ferroic domain walls could play an important role in microelectronics, given their nanometric size and often distinct functional properties. Until now, devices and device concepts were mostly based on mobile domain walls in ferromagnetic and ferroelectric materials. A less explored path is to make use of polar domain walls in nonpolar ferroelastic materials. Indeed, while the polar character of ferroelastic domain walls has been demonstrated, polarization control has been elusive. Here, we report evidence for the electrostatic signature of the domain-wall polarization in nonpolar calcium titanate (CaTiO3). Macroscopic mechanical resonances excited by an ac electric field are observed as a signature of a piezoelectric response caused by polar walls. On the microscopic scale, the polarization in domain walls modifies the local surface potential of the sample. Through imaging of surface potential variations, we show that the potential at the domain wall can be controlled by electron injection. This could enable devices based on nondestructive information readout of surface potential., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

The elastic response of BaTiO$_3$ single crystals during electric field cycling at room temperature has been studied using in-situ Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS), which allows monitoring of both the elastic and anelastic changes caused by ferroelectric polarization switching. We find that the first ferroelectric switching of a virgin single crystal is dominated by ferroelastic 90{\deg} switching. In subsequent ferroelectric switching, ferroelastic switching is reduced by domain pinning and by the predominance of 180{\deg} ferroelectric domains, as confirmed by polarized light microscopy. RUS under in-situ electric field therefore demonstrates to be an effective technique for the investigation of electromechanical coupling in ferroelectrics., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures
