In this paper we consider the Penrose limit in the case of two gravity duals. One of them, consists of compactified I-branes (intersecting sets of D5-branes over $(1+1)$ dimensions). The second consists of D5-branes compactified on a circle. Both compactifications preserve SUSY. We find a match of the oscillators and masses of string modes on the resulting pp wave against a spin chain in a $(2+1)-$dimensional field theory in the first case, and a spin chain in a $(1+1)-$dimensional field theory in the second., Comment: 20 pages, no figures

We find AdS soliton solutions in 5-dimensional gauged supergravity, obtained from the $S^5$ compactification of type IIB, with a dilaton saturating the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. The solutions depend on the value of the periodicity of an $S^1$ cycle and the boundary values for two $U(1)$ gauge fields, and give a scalar VEV in the dual field theory. At certain values of the gauge sources we have supersymmetric solutions, corresponding to supersymmetric flows, which are a deformation of the Coulomb Branch flow in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. The solutions parameterize quantum phase transitions between a discrete spectrum phase, a continuous above a mass gap phase, and a continuous without a mass gap phase, in 2+1 dimensions. We analyze the phase diagram in terms of the QFT sources and we find that for every value for them, there are always two branches of supergravity solutions. We find that these two branches of solitons correspond to two possible vacua existing in the dual QFT when fermions are anti-periodic on an $S^1$. We describe the interconnection of these states in the QFT at strong 't Hooft coupling in the large $N$ limit. We consider rotational holographic transport in strongly coupled 2+1 dimensional systems, from the point of view of 3+1 dimensional gravity. We consider the moment of inertia $I$ as a kind of transport coefficient, identified with the moment of inertia of a charged rotating black hole in $AdS_4$ background. In the low-temperature region, we find the behaviour of the density $I/A$ with temperature $T$ and angular velocity $\Omega$, and find a quadratic behaviour for $\partial(I/A)/\partial\Omega$ with $T$, in the presence of some charge $Q$., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures; comments added

In analogy to null electromagnetic fields we define null YM fields. We show that the null non-abelian $SU(N)$ gauge fields admit a set of $2 N^2$ conserved "helicities". We derive null YM solutions that carry finite helicities by uplifting the abelian Hopfion solution and their generalizations. Another method that we implement is to deform YM solutions which do not carry helicities into ones that have nontrivial helicities. A nontrivial non-Abelian solution with helicities is found as a wave of infinite energy. We show that the d'Alembertian operator with a possible mass term in the AdS soliton and more general confining gravity dual backrounds admits infinitely many different spectra. These can be interpreted as different theories in the infrared and correspond to multitrace deformations of either the Dirichlet or the Neumann theory. We prove that all these fluctuations are normalizable and provide examples of their spectra. Therefore, the AdS soliton can be interpreted as giving a holographic RG flow between an universal UV theory at the AdS boundary and these infinitely many possibilities in the IR, obtained by deformations. The massive spectrum of the double trace deformation in $AdS_5$ allows the matching of the large-$N$ glueball masses of lattice $QCD_3$; the ratio of the ground states of the $2^{++}$ and $0^{++}$ channels are in full agreement with the lattice prediction. When considering $AdS_7$ and the 4-dimensional pure glue theory, a remarkably general picture emerges, where we can write formulas for the fluctuations that are in agreement with ones from holographic high-energy scattering and from AdS/CFT with IR and UV cut-off. In this note we show explicitly that, applying an extension of Maldacena's map for the wavefunction of the Universe $Z[\phi]=\Psi[\phi]$ from de Sitter inflation to holographic cosmology, we find the relations previously derived for 2-point functions, $\langle h_{ij}(p) h_{kl}(-p)\rangle \sim 1/[{\rm Im}\langle T_{ij}(-ip)T_{kl}(+ip)\rangle]$ and a similar one for currents, which were used to show that holographic cosmology matches CMBR data and solves Big Bang problems as well as inflation. Higher point functions are done similarly, and as an application, we check the result for the 3-point functions of scalar and tensor fluctuations and find the result for the monopole non-Gaussianity arising from the 3-point functions of currents. In this paper we present the calculation of the three-point function in momentum space of currents for a $SO(3)$ global symmetry, in a three-dimensional toy model within phenomenological holographic cosmology. Since the two-point function gives, via electric-magnetic duality, the resolution of the cosmological monopole problem, the three-point function is related to the monopole non-Gaussianities. We check that the final result is UV and IR finite and satisfies the transverse Ward identities and consider the $k_1\ll k_2,k_3$ case, relevant for cosmology. In this paper we study the Penrose limit of the T-dual of the MNa solution and its field theory dual, in order to better understand the effect of T-duality in this case. We find a matching of string pp wave oscillators and their masses to the field theory modes, that are rearranged after T-duality. In this paper we parallel the construction of Tong of a gauge theory for shallow water, by writing a gauge theory for the Euler fluid in 2+1 dimensions. We then extend it to an Euler fluid coupled to electromagnetic background. We argue that the gauge theory formulation provides a topological argument for the quantization of 2+1 dimensional Euler Hopfion solution. In the process, we find a (non-gauge) action for the Euler fluid that can be extended to any dimension, including the physical 3+1 dimensions. In this note we calculate susceptibilities, as derivatives of a thermodynamical potential, for the general perturbative holographic set-up for transport with magnetic field, charge density and topological term, and compare with the quantities obtained in the standard $AdS_4$ dyonic black hole analysis of Hartnoll and Kovtun. In this paper, we construct a charged soliton with a finite energy and no delta function source in a pure Abelian gauge theory. Specifically, we first consider the 3-dimensional Abelian gauge theory, with a Maxwell term and a l evel $N$ CS term. We find a static solution that carries charge $N$, angular momentum $\frac{N}{2}$ and whose radius is $N$ independent. However, this solution has a divergent energy. In analogy to the replacement of the 4 dimensional Maxwell action with the BI action, which renders the classical energy of a point charge finite, for the 3 dimensional theory which includes a CS term such a replacement leads to a finite energy for the solution of above. We refer to this soliton as a CSBIon solution, representing a finite energy version of the fundamental (sourced) charged electron of Maxwell theory in 4 dimensions. In 3 dimensions the BI+CS action has a static charged solution with finite energy and no source, hence a soliton solution. The CSBIon, similar to its Maxwellian predecessor, has a charge $N$, angular momentum proportional to $N$ and an $N$-independent radius. We also present other nonlinear modifications of Maxwell theory that admit similar solitons. The CSBIon may be relevant in various holographic scenarios. In particular, it may describe a D6-brane wrapping an $S^4$ in a compactified D4-brane background. In this paper we consider the effect of a topological Maxwell term $W(\Phi)F_{\mu\nu}\tilde F^{\mu\nu}$ on holographic transport and thermodynamics in 2+1 dimensions, in the case with a dyonic black hole in the gravity dual. We find that for a constant $W$ the modifications to the thermodynamics are easily quantified, and transport is affected only for $\sigma_{xy}$. If one consider also the attractor mechanism, and writing the horizon transport in terms of charges, the transport coefficients are affected explicitly. We also introduce the case of case of radially dependent $W(z)$, in which case, however, analytical calculations become very involved. In this paper we consider $T\bar T$ deformations in the context of pp waves obtained from gravity duals. We propose a deformation of $AdS_5\times S^5$ similar to the deformation of the single trace $T\bar T$ deformation of $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ with NS-NS flux, and study it through the Penrose limit, concluding that it must correspond to some dipole theory, probably noncommutative. We $T\bar T$ deform the worldsheet string for the $AdS_5\times S^5$ pp wave, and find a corresponding spin chain Hamiltonian. In this paper we consider an Euler fluid coupled to external electromagnetism. We prove that the Hopfion fluid-electromagnetic knot, carrying fluid and electromagnetic (EM) helicities, solves the fluid dynamical equations as well as the Abanov Wiegmann (AW) equations for helicities, which are inspired by the axial-current anomaly of a Dirac fermion. We also find a nontrivial knot solution with truly interacting fluid and electromagnetic fields. The key ingredients of these phenomena are the EM and fluid helicities. An EM dual system, with a magnetically charged fluid, is proposed and the analogs of the AW equations are written down. We consider a fluid coupled to a nonlinear generalizations for electromagnetism. The Hopfions are shown to be solutions of the generalized equations. We write down the formalism of fluids in 2+1 dimensions, and we dimensionally reduce the 3+1 dimensional solutions. In three dimensions, a theory with spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry was described holographically by the Maldacena-Nastase (MNa) solution. We revisit the issue of its Penrose limit, and compare the resulting pp wave and its string eigenstates to a sector of the theory on 5-branes reduced on $S^3$, and a spin chain-like system. We obtain many of the features of the pp wave analysis, but a complete matching still eludes us. Recently, the most general theory of electromagnetism invariant under duality and conformal invariance was written, and dubbed ModMax. It arises from a generalization of Born-Infeld (BI) theory by taking the infinite tension limit, $T\rightarrow\infty$. In this note we show that this generalization can be obtained from a brane-like construction, just like BI, and can thus be coupled to scalars in the same way to obtain a DBI-like action. All the BIon and catenoid solutions, and their interpolations, are still solutions of the generalized DBI-like action, suggesting that an interpretation within string theory could be possible. Gluon amplitudes at most-subleading order in the $1/N$ expansion share a remarkable simplicity with graviton amplitudes: collinear divergences are completely absent in both and, as a consequence, their full IR behavior arises from soft gluon/graviton exchange among the external states. In this paper we study the effect of all-loop IR divergences of celestial most-subleading color gluon amplitudes and their similarities with the celestial gravity case. In particular, a simple celestial exponentiation formula for the dipole part can be written. We also analize how this exponentiation is modified by non-dipole contributions. Finally we also show that, in the Regge limit, the soft factor satisfies the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation hinting at the possibility that, in this limit, an effective Wess-Zumino-Witten model would describe the dynamics of the infrared sector., Comment: 30 pages, no figures

We construct a web of non-supersymmetric dualities in four spacetime dimensions for theories with theta and Maxwell terms. Our construction mirrors the recipe used in (2+1)-dimensions to demonstrate a similar duality for theories with Chern-Simons terms. As in the 3-dimensional case, the web consists of boson-boson, fermion-fermion and boson-fermion dualities, any one of which can be taken as a seed for the remaining two. To be concrete, we begin by constructing the basic bosonization duality which we then use to generate the web, using an analog of the 3-dimensional massive construction given in \cite{Nastase:2017gxr} . The resulting 4-dimensional duality web is best understood as an extension of the, by now well-known, 3-dimensional case due to its somewhat singular nature. We conjecture that this is the final thread in a multi-dimensional duality web that connects low energy theories in 4-, 3- and 2-spacetime dimensions and speculate on its application to 3-dimensional topological insulators., Comment: 29 pages, no figures

The Skyrme model, though it admits correctly a wide range of static properties of the nucleon, does not seem to reproduce properly the scattering behavior of nucleons at high energies. In this paper we present a $T\bar T$-like deformation of it, inspired by a 1+1 dimensional model, in which boosted nucleons behave like shock waves. The scattering of the latter saturates the Froissart bound. We start by showing that 1+1 dimensional $T\bar T$ deformations of the free abelian pion action are in fact generalizations of the old Heisenberg model for nucleon-nucleon scattering, yielding the same saturation of the Froissart bound. We then deform the strong coupling limit of the bosonized action of multi-flavor QCD in two dimensions using the $T\bar T$ deformation of the WZW action with a mass term. We derive the classical soliton solution that corresponds to the nucleon, determine its mass and discuss its transformation into a shock-wave upon boosting. We uplift this action into a 3+1 dimensional $T\bar T$-like deformation of the Skyrme action. We compare this deformed action to that of chiral perturbation theory. In this letter we clarify that the monopole problem can always be solved in bosonic holographic cosmology, by the analogue of "dilution" in inflation, which is the fact that the {\em electric} current is an irrelevant operator in the dual field theory. In this paper we study the Wiedemann-Franz laws for transport in 2+1 dimensions, and the action of $Sl(2,\mathbb{Z})$ on this transport, for theories with an AdS/CMT dual. We find that $Sl(2,\mathbb{Z})$ restricts the RG-like flow of conductivities and that the Wiedemann-Franz law is $\bar L =\bar\kappa/(T\sigma)=cg_4^2\pi/3$, from the weakly coupled} gravity dual. In a self-dual theory this value is also the value of $L =\kappa/(T\sigma)$ in the weakly coupled field theory description. Using the formalism of a 0+1 dimensional effective action for both generalized $SYK_q$ models and the $AdS_4$ gravity dual, we calculate the transport coefficients and show how they can be matched at large $q$. In this note we study soliton, breather and shockwave solutions in certain two dimensional field theories. These include: (i) Heisenberg's model suggested originally to describe the scattering of high energy nucleons (ii) $T\bar T$ deformations of certain canonical scalar field theories with a potential. We find explicit soliton solutions of these models with sine-Gordon and Higgs-type potentials. We prove that the $T\bar T$ deformation of a theory of a given potential does not correct the mass of the soliton of the undeformed one. We further conjecture the form of breather solutions of these models. In this paper we model the transition from the non-geometric holographic cosmology regime, to the usual radiation dominated (RD) cosmology, known as reheating in the case of (perturbative) inflation. We find that we can easily transition into any MSSM construction of intersecting D6-branes, via $\alpha'$ corrections in the 3 dimensional field theory as well as in cosmology, followed by cosmological reheating via S-NS5-branes. Moreover, we can naturally obtain the (true) cosmological constant $\Lambda$ of the observed order of magnitude. The resulting supersymmetry breaking is just outside the currently observed energies. In this paper we describe in detail how to solve the problems of pre-inflationary cosmology within the holographic cosmology model of McFadden and Skenderis \cite{McFadden:2009fg}. The solutions of the smoothness and horizon problems, the flatness problem, the entropy and perturbation problems and the baryon asymmetry problem are shown, and the mechanisms for them complement the inflationary solutions. Most of the paper is devoted to the solution of the monopole relic problem, through a detailed calculation of 2-loop correlators of currents in a toy model which we perform in $d$ dimensions, in order to extract its leading dependece on $g^2_{\rm eff}=g^2_{YM}N/q$ and find a dilution effect. In this paper we consider Abelian vector plus scalar holographic gravity models for 2+1 dimensional condensed matter transport, and the effect of S-duality on them. We find the transport coefficients from the electric and heat currents via usual membrane paradigm-type calculations, and the effect of S-duality on them. We study the same system also by using the entropy function formalism in the extremal case, and the formalism of holographic Stokes equations, in the case of one-dimensional lattices. In this paper we study particle-vortex duality and the effect of theta terms from the point of view of AdS/CMT constructions. We can construct the duality in 2+1 dimensional field theories with or without a Chern-Simons term, and derive an effect on conductivities, when the action is viewed as a response action. We can find its effect on 3+1 dimensional theories, with or without a theta term, coupled to gravity in asymptotically AdS space, and derive the resulting effect on conductivities defined in the spirit of AdS/CFT. AdS/CFT then relates the 2+1 dimensional and the 3+1 dimensional cases naturally. Quantum gravity corrections, as well as more general effective actions for the abelian vector, can be treated similarly. We can use the fluid/gravity correspondence, and the membrane paradigm, to define shear and bulk viscosities $\eta$ and $\zeta$ for a gravity plus abelian vector plus scalar system near a black hole, and define the effect of the S-duality on it., Comment: 39 pages, no figures; references added

We show that standard puzzles of hot Big Bang cosmology that motivated the introduction of cosmological inflation, such as the smoothness and horizon problem, the flatness problem and the relic problem are also solved by holographic models for very early universe based on perturbative three dimensional QFT. We explore the possibility of extending the familiar bosonization of two dimensions to $(0+1)$- dimensional systems with a large number of degrees of freedom. I present the sketch of a "physicist's" derivation of the AdS/CFT correspondence for the original pair, string theory in $AdS_5\times S^5$ vs. ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, based on the pp wave limit, and deviations from it. I show that one can reverse the logic, and derive the action of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, as kinetic terms plus vertices, as well as the elements of its path integral, from string theory on the pp wave. I present a {\em general relativistic} model with a compactified second time coordinate that {\em a priori} allows for causal, yet faster than light travel in the background of a FLRW geometry, by local modification of a higher dimensional background geometry, specifically with respect to the radius of the compactified time coordinate. The modification can be induced via the fields of the model. I show that one cannot convert (as possible in special relativistic models, or simple general relativistic models) the super-luminality into closed time-like loops violating causality, due to a novel combination of factors, at least for $v_{\rm max}\leq \sqrt{2}$. The physics of the second time is constrained by postulates derived from reasonable physical assumptions. We propose a way to obtain holographic cosmology models for 3+1 dimensional cosmologies vs. 3 dimensional field theories from a "dimensional reduction" procedure, obtained by integrating over the time direction, of (modifed) standard holographic duals of 3+1 dimensional field theories. The example of a modified ${\cal N}=4$ SYM vs. $AdS_5\times S^5$ is presented, and in perturbation theory doesn't match observations, though at strong coupling it might. Within the holographic cosmology paradigm, specifically the model of McFadden and Skenderis, but more generally than that, the cosmological constant is found to naturally flow from a large value, to a small value, which can even be as low as the needed $\sim 10^{-120}$ times the original, along with the dual RG flow. Within this context then, the cosmological constant problem is mapped to a simple quantum field theory property, even though the exact mechanism for it in gravity is still obscure. Knotted solutions to electromagnetism are investigated as an independent subsector of the theory. We write down a Lagrangian and a Hamiltonian formulation of Bateman's construction for the knotted electromagnetic solutions. We introduce a general definition of the null condition and generalize the construction of Maxwell's theory to massless free complex scalar, its dual two form field, and to a massless DBI scalar. We set up the framework for quantizing the theory both in a path integral approach, as well as the canonical Dirac method for a constrained system. We investigate the possibility that the inflaton, in particular in conformal inflation models, is also a chameleon, i.e. that it couples to the energy density of some heavy non-relativistic matter present during inflation. We find new and interesting attractor behaviours, either prolonging inflation, or changing the observables $n_s,r$, depending on the sign of the chameleon coupling exponent. We consider the backgrounds obtained by Abelian and non-Abelian T-duality applied on $AdS_5\times S^5$. We study geodesics, calculate Penrose limits and find the associated plane-wave geometries. We quantise the weakly coupled type-IIA string theory on these backgrounds. We study the BMN sector, finding operators that wrap the original quiver CFT. For the non-Abelian plane wave, we find a 'flow' in the frequencies. We report some progress to understand this, in terms of deconstruction of a higher dimensional field theory. Knotted solutions to electromagnetism and fluid dynamics are investigated, based on relations we find between the two subjects. We can write fluid dynamics in electromagnetism language, but only on an initial surface, or for linear perturbations, and we use this map to find knotted fluid solutions, as well as new electromagnetic solutions. We find that knotted solutions of Maxwell electromagnetism are also solutions of more general nonlinear theories, like Born-Infeld, and including ones which contain quantum corrections from couplings with other modes, like Euler-Heisenberg and string theory DBI. Null configurations in electromagnetism can be described as a null pressureless fluid, and from this map we can find null fluid knotted solutions. We examine Penrose limits of the duality proposed by Guarino, Jafferis and Varela between a type IIA massive background of the type of a warped, squashed $AdS_4\times S^6$, and a 2+1 dimensional IR fixed point of ${\cal N}=8$ super Yang-Mills deformed by Chern-Simons terms to ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry. One type of Penrose limit for closed strings corresponds to a large charge closed spin chain, and another, for open strings on giant graviton D-branes, corresponds to an open spin chain on sub-determinant operators. For the first limit, we find that like in the ABJM case, there are functions $f_a(\lambda)$ that interpolate between the perturbative and nonperturbative (string) regions for the magnon energy. We examine knotted solutions, the most simple of which is the "Hopfion", from the point of view of relations between electromagnetism and ideal fluid dynamics. A map between fluid dynamics and electromagnetism works for initial conditions or for linear perturbations, allowing us to find new knotted fluid solutions. Knotted solutions are also found to to be solutions of nonlinear generalizations of electromagnetism, and of quantum-corrected actions for electromagnetism coupled to other modes. For null configurations, electromagnetism can be described as a null pressureless fluid, for which we can find solutions from the knotted solutions of electromagnetism. Recently, a duality web for three dimensional theories with Chern-Simons terms was proposed. This can be derived from a single bosonization type duality, for which various supporting arguments (but not a proof) were given. Here we explicitly derive this bosonization, in the Abelian case and for a particular regime of parameters. To do this, we use the particle-vortex duality in combination with a Buscher-like duality (both considered in the regime of low energies). We investigate vortex soliton solutions in 2+1 dimensional scalar gauge theories, in the presence of source terms in the action. Concretely, this would be applied to anyons, as well as the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE). We classify solitons for renormalizable potentials, as well as some nonrenormalizable examples that could be relevant for the FQHE. The non-Abelian case, specifically for theories with global non-Abelian symmetries, is also investigated, as is the non-relativistic limit of the above theories, when we get a modification of the Jackiw-Pi model, with an interesting new vortex solution.
