We have studied repositioning of carvedilol (an antihypertensive drug) incorporated into MCM-41 mesoporous silica. The repositioning proposes a reduction in the slow pace of discovery of new drugs, as well as toxicological safety and a significant reduction in high research costs, making it an attractive strategy for researchers and large pharmaceutical companies. We obtained MCM-41 by template synthesis and functionalized it by post-synthesis grafting with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) only or with folic acid (FA), which gave MCM-41-APTES and MCM-41-APTES-FA, respectively. We characterized the materials by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, zeta potential (ZP) measurements, Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy, x-ray diffractometry, nitrogen gas adsorption, and CHNS elemental analysis. We quantified the percentage of drug that was incorporated into the MCM-41 materials by thermogravimetric analysis and evaluated their cytotoxic activity in non-tumor human lung fibroblasts and the tumor human melanoma and human cervical adenocarcinoma cell lines by XTT salt reduction (2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-arboxanilide). The x-ray diffractograms of the MCM-41 materials displayed low-angle peaks in the 2 θ range between 2° and 3°, and the materials presented type IV nitrogen adsorption isotherms and H2 hysteresis typical of the MCM-41hexagonal network. The infrared spectra, the charge changes revealed by ZP measurements, and the CHN ratios obtained from elemental analysis showed that MCM-41 was amino-functionalized, and that carvedilol was incorporated into it. MCM-41-APTES incorporated 23.80% carvedilol, whereas MCM-41 and MCM-41-APTES-FA incorporated 18.69% and 12.71% carvedilol, respectively. Incorporated carvedilol was less cytotoxic to tumor and non-tumor cells than the pure drug. Carvedilol repositioning proved favorable and encourages further studies aimed at reducing its cytotoxicity to non-tumor cells. Thin films of lanthanide orthoniobate LnNbO 4 (LnNO) and orthotantalate LnTaO 4 (LnTO), (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu) were fabricated using the sol-gel method with subsequent spin-coating on the PbZrO 3 /Al 2 O 3 substrate and annealing at 1000°C. X-ray diffraction patterns showed monoclinic M-LnNbO 4 or M´-LnTaO 4 , which coexists with the orthorhombic or tetragonal phase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of Nd 3+ , Sm 3+ /Sm 2+ and Eu 3+ /Eu 2+ ions. The luminescence properties of polymorphic films were investigated. Excitation spectra of PbZrO 3 interlayer represented broad bands at 410 and 550 nm that were assigned to charge transfer bands (CTB). In all films, the CTB broad band at ~275 nm related to charge transfer transition of Ln 3+ →O 2- and NbO 4 3- or TaO 4 3- groups. In excitation spectra, 4 I 9/2 → 4 G 5/2 (Nd 3+ ), 6 H 5/2 → 6 P 3/2 (Sm 3+ ) and 7 F 0 → 5 L 6 (Eu 3+ ) transitions (at 585, 402 and 395 nm), respectively were found to be more intense than any other Ln 3+ transition. The emission spectra showed narrow and intense bands at 1065, 600, and 614 nm that were ascribed to Nd 3+ , Sm 3+ , and Eu 3+ 4f-f intraconfigurational transitions 4 F 3/2 → 4 I 11/2 , 4 G 5/2 → 6 H 7/2 , and 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 , respectively. Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer, and thus it is important to develop new drugs for its treatment. The present study aimed to examine the antitumor effects of solamargine a major alkaloid heteroside present in Solanum lycocarpum fruit. In addition solamargine was incorporated into nanoparticles (NP) of yttrium vanadate functionalized with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (YVO 4 :Eu 3+ :CPTES:SM) to determine antitumor activity. The anti-melanoma assessment was performed using a syngeneic mouse melanoma model B16F10 cell line. In addition, systemic toxicity, nephrotoxic, and genotoxic parameters were assessed. Solamargine, at doses of 5 or 10 mg/kg/day administered subcutaneously to male C57BL/6 mice for 5 days, decreased tumor size and frequency of mitoses in tumor tissue, indicative of a decrease in cell proliferation. Treatments with YVO 4 :Eu 3+ :CPTES:SM significantly reduced the number of mitoses in tumor tissue, associated with no change in tumor size. There were no apparent signs of systemic toxicity, nephrotoxicity, and genotoxicity initiated by treatments either with solamargine alone or plant alkaloid incorporated into NP. The animals treated with YVO 4 :Eu 3+ :CPTES:SM exhibited significant increase in spleen weight accompanied by no apparent histological changes in all tissues examined. In addition, animals treated with solamargine (10 mg/kg/day) and YVO 4 :Eu 3+ :CPTES:SM demonstrated significant reduction in hepatic DNA damage which was induced by tumor growth. Therefore, data suggest that solamargine may be considered a promising candidate in cancer therapy with no apparent toxic effects.

To meet the demands of the market and society, the development of structured polymeric materials for application in the medical field is constantly increasing. Over the last decades, metallic silver nanoparticles have been explored due to their antimicrobial action. Here, we aimed to incorporate metallic silver nanoparticles into polymeric pieces obtained by additive manufacture via a chemical route involving silver nitrate and sodium borohydride. Polyamide 12 membranes were obtained by selective laser sintering, which was followed by washing, pretreatment, and functionalization with the alkoxides tetraethylorthosilicate and 3-aminopropyl tetraethoxysilane. For nanoparticle preparation and incorporation, a chemical route was tested under different conditions. The samples were characterized by techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and infrared vibrational spectroscopy. Nanoparticle formation and incorporation into the polyamide 12 membranes were demonstrated by the absorbance band at 420 nm, which indicated that the particles measured between 10 and 50 nm in size; by the X-ray diffraction peaks at 2θ = 38, 44, and 64°, which are typical of crystalline silver; and by vibrational spectroscopy, which evidenced that the nanoparticles interacted with the polyamide 12 nitrogen groups. Purpose: We evaluated the analgesic, anti-inflammatory and toxicological effects of indomethacin incorporated into mesoporous silica nanoparticles (IND+NP)., Methods: Nociception was evaluated by the formalin assay. The anti-inflammatory potential was assessed by cell migration and paw edema assays, modulation of nitric oxide and cytokines (IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α) by macrophages production. Toxicity was evaluated in peritoneal macrophages and by the locomotion assay and assessment of gastric injuries, presence of occult blood and hepatic and renal markers., Results: IND+NP reduced nociception during phases 1 by 53% and 2 by 79% of the formalin assay and the influx of peritoneal cells by 94%, indicating an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect more efficiently than indomethacin alone. Indomethacin, but not IND+NP, caused macroscopic gastric injuries, the presence of fecal occult blood, and an increase of ALT levels. In the paw edema assay, IND+NP reduced edema by 21%. IND+NP has no effect on the LPS-induced production of nitric oxide, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α on no cytotoxic concentrations., Conclusions: The incorporation of indomethacin into mesoporous silica nanoparticles effectively increased the activity of the drug observed in the formalin and cell migration assays and prevented the gastric and hepatic damage associated with its use., (Copyright © 2020. This work reports two systematic studies related to yttrium vanadate (YVO 4 ) phosphors. The first evaluates how the annealing temperature and V 5+ /Y 3+ molar ratio determine the emergence of a single YVO 4 tetragonal phase, whereas the second concerns the optimal Nd 3+ concentration to improve the infrared emission properties for bio-labelling applications. The YVO 4 :Nd phosphors were synthesized by adapting the non-hydrolytic sol-gel route. For the first study, samples containing different V 5+ /Y 3+ molar ratios (1.02, 1.48, 1.71, or 3.13) were obtained. For the second study, YVO 4 :Nd phosphors containing different Nd 3+ concentrations (1.0, 3.0, 5.0, or 10.0% in mol) were prepared. X-ray diffractometry and RAMAN spectroscopy results revealed that, regardless of the heat-treatment temperature, the V 5+ /Y 3+ molar ratio of 1.48 was the best composition to avoid undesired phases like Y 2 O 3 and V 2 O 5 . Photoluminescence results indicated that the sample containing 3.0% in mol of Nd 3+ and annealed at 1000 °C presented the best infrared emission properties. This sample displayed an intense broad band in the ultraviolet region, which was ascribed to the VO 4 3- charge transfer band, as well as several bands in the visible and infrared regions, which were attributed to the Nd 3+ intraconfigurational f-f transitions. Regardless of the excitation wavelength (ultraviolet, visible, or near-infrared), the mean radiative lifetime was about 12.00 µs. The prepared phosphors presented absorption and emission bands in the biological window (BW) regions, which are located between 750 and 900 nm and between 1000 and 1300 nm, so they are candidates for applications in medical imaging and diagnoses.

Purpose: This work investigates how Yb 3+ concentration affects the luminescent properties of LaNbO 4 nanoparticles for medical imaging applications. Due to the highly transparent optical window for organic tissues in the near infrared region (650-1000 nm), upconversion fluorescence allows near infrared wavelengths to penetrate deeply into tissues, which is useful in biomedical areas such as biodetection, activated phototherapy, and screening., Materials/method: Upconversion nanoparticles based on LaNbO 4 doped with Tm 3+ and Yb 3+ were prepared by the one-step industrial process called Spray Pyrolysis. Samples with different Tm 3+ :Yb 3+ molar ratios (1:4, 1:8 and 1:16) were obtained., Results: The X-ray powder diffractograms of all the samples displayed the typical peaks of a crystalline material (tetragonal phase). Emission bands emerged in the blue, red, and near infrared regions, and they corresponded to the Tm 3+ 1 G 4 → 3 H 6 (475 nm), 1 G 4 → 3 F 4 (650 nm), 3 F 2,3  →  3 H 6 (690 nm), and 3 H 4 → 3 H 6 (803 nm) transitions, which indicated a two-photon absorption process. As for bio-labelling application, the results indicated that Yb 3+ concentration was directly related to signal intensity., Conclusions: The intensity of positive conversion emissions depends directly on Yb 3+ concentration. The bio-labelling tests pointed to the potential application of these materials. Melanoma is the deadliest type of skin cancer. Treatments that directly address tumor survival are required. Indomethacin (IND) is a well-known drug used worldwide. Although widely used as a therapeutic agent, IND has undesirable gastrointestinal effects., Purpose: To investigate the antitumor efficacy of IND incorporated into mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs+IND), as well as its toxic potential in a syngeneic murine B16 melanoma model., Methods: Antitumor activity was evaluated by measuring tumor size and weight and by histopathological analysis. Possible molecular signaling pathways involved in the antitumor activity were analyzed by Western blot in liver tissue and by immunohistochemistry in tumor tissue. The potential toxicity was evaluated by determining body and organ weights and by biochemical and genotoxic analysis., Results: MSNPs+IND treatments inhibited tumor growth by up to 70.09% and decreased the frequency of mitosis in tumor tissues, which was up to 37.95% lower compared to the IND groups. In hepatic tissue, COX-2 levels decreased significantly after treatment with MSNPs+IND and IND. Additionally, MSNPs+IND and IND increased the levels of cleaved caspase-3 (156.25% and 137.50%, respectively), inducing tumor cell apoptosis. Genotoxicity was limited to the group treated with the higher concentration of IND, while MSNPs prevented IND-induced genotoxicity., Conclusions: MSNPs may be promising for future applications in cancer therapy.

The spectroscopic properties of lanthanide ions stem from absorption and emission radiation in the solar spectrum range, which promotes numerous applications in areas such as white light emission, bio-imaging, biological markers, and photovoltaic cells, among others. To intensify these properties, several matrixes have been studied, particularly the yttrium vanadate matrix due to its structural, mechanic, and physicochemical properties. The non-hydrolytic sol-gel process is a versatile way to prepare inorganic oxides doped with lanthanide ions. In this work, we describe the synthesis of yttrium vanadate matrixes doped with Eu 3+ , Er 3+ , and/or Yb 3+ ions (containing 1% lanthanide ions with respect to Y 3+ (molar ratio)) by the non-hydrolytic sol-gel, annealed at 800 °C for 4 h, and their characterization by X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction patterns display the peaks corresponding to the yttrium vanadate tetragonal phase. Laser excitation at 980 nm elicits Er 3+ emission bands in the green and red regions and Eu 3+ emission at 620 nm. Laser excitation at 322 nm; i.e., the charge transfer band, provides emission in the same regions, as well as infrared emission. This system is a promising candidate for applications in solar cells, optical amplifiers, and biomarkers because it can be excited at different wavelengths. The presence of volatile organic compounds in groundwater is a major concern when it is used as a drinking water source because many of these compounds can adversely affect human health. This work reports on the preparation and characterization of white and red Brazilian São Simão's kaolinite-TiO 2 nanocomposites and their use as catalysts in the photochemical degradation of toluene, a significant volatile organic compound. The nanocomposites were prepared by a sol-gel procedure, using titanium bis(triethanolaminate)diisopropoxide as a precursor. Thermal treatments of the nanocomposites led to different polymorphic titania phases, while the clay changed from kaolinite to metakaolinite. This structural evolution strongly affected the photocatalytic degradation behavior-all the solids efficiently degraded toluene and the solid calcined at 400 °C, formed by kaolinite and anatase, showed the best behavior (90% degradation). On extending the photochemical treatment up to 48 h, high mineralization levels were reached. The advantage of photodegradation using the nanocomposites was confirmed by comparing the results from isolated components (titanium dioxide and kaolinite) to observe that the nanocomposites displayed fundamental importance to the photodegradation pathways of toluene.

In this work, we have investigated how the concentration of Gd 3+ ions affects the structural and luminescent properties of niobium oxide-based matrices doped with Eu 3+ ions obtained by the adapted non-hydrolytic sol-gel route. X-ray diffractograms revealed that increasing the concentration of Gd 3+ ions favored the onset of the Gd 2 O 3 structure decreasing the GdNbO 4 phase. The excitation spectra (λ em  = 613 nm) presented bands corresponding to the 7 F 0  →  5 L J transitions (L = D, G, and L, where J = 0-7), attributed to the Eu 3+ ions, and a broad band at 270 nm, assigned to the charge transfer of the [Formula: see text] group. The emission spectra contained bands refer to the 5 D 0  →  7 F J internal configuration transitions (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4). Finally, the CIE chromaticity coordinates met the standard for the color red established by the National Television Standard Committee (NTSC).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antitumor efficiency of chemotherapy with cisplatin alone and incorporated into europium(III)-doped yttrium vanadate nanoparticles functionalized with 3‑chloropropyltrimethoxysilane with folic acid and without folic acid in a syngeneic mouse melanoma model. Histopathological, biochemical and genotoxic analyses of treated animals were performed to assess the toxicity of treatments. The treatment of the animals with cisplatin alone and the nanoparticles functionalized with cisplatin at a dose of 5 mg/kg b.w. for 5 days reduced tumor weight about 86% and 65%, respectively. Histopathological analysis showed lower mean frequency of mitoses in tumor tissue of the groups receiving cisplatin alone (90% reduction) and the nanoparticles functionalized with cisplatin (70% reduction) compared to the tumor control group. A reduction in body and liver weight and an increase in serum creatinine and urea levels were observed in animals treated with CDDP, but not in those receiving the nanoparticles functionalized with cisplatin. Genotoxicity assessment by the comet assay revealed lower frequencies of DNA damage in animals treated with the nanoparticles functionalized with cisplatin (mean score = 140.80) compared to those treated with cisplatin alone (mean score = 231.80). Marked toxic effects were observed in animals treated with cisplatin alone, while treatment with the nanoparticles functionalized with cisplatin showed no toxicity. Moreover, folic acid in the inorganic nanoparticles reduced the genotoxicity of cisplatin in the bone marrow micronucleus test (10 ± 1.4 and 40 ± 0.0 micronucleus, respectively). Two solvent free methods of a one-to-one alcohol/acid mol ratio synthesis of benzyl esters of the formic, acetic, benzoic, salicylic, nicotinic, and oxalic acids are described. The stoichiometric reactions used 1.5 mol ratio solid NbCl 5 as the reagent and required from two to three hours for completion at room temperature; for the catalytic processes, NbCl 5 was grafted directly, at room temperature, onto a silica gel of specific area of 507 m 2 g -1 , produced from construction sand and sodium carbonate, forming a 5.4% Nb w/w SiO 2 -Nb gel with a specific area of 412 m 2 g -1 . At 10% w/w catalyst/alcohol ratio, this SiO 2 -Nb catalyst gave similarly very good yields but required from 6 to 9 hours at the reflux temperature of the slurry. The catalyst could be re-used three times.

The search for more efficient and less aggressive cancer treatment methods has intensified over the last decades and has involved many scientific areas. To provide skin cancer patients with better quality of life, this work aims to incorporate chemotherapy into polyamide membranes, functionalized by the sol-gel methodology, for controlled drug release at the target tissue. A 200-micrometer-thick flexible polyamide membrane prepared by Additive Manufacture was activated and functionalized with the alkoxide 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane, which was followed by incorporation of the antitumor agent cisplatin. Membrane functionalization with the alkoxide was attested by infrared absorption spectroscopy, which evidenced a band at 1100cm -1 , due to Si-O-Si vibration, and typical cisplatin bands at 3200 and 1600cm -1 . The thermogravimetric curve revealed increased silicon oxide and platinum residues. Drug release was tested in simulated body fluid. The unique properties of macroporous, mesoporous, and microporous systems, including their ability to accommodate molecules of different sizes inside their pores and to act as drug delivery systems, have been the object of extensive studies. In this work, mesoporous silica with hexagonal structure was obtained by template synthesis via the sol-gel process. The resulting material was used as support to accommodate the anti-inflammatory agent indomethacin. The alkaline route was used to prepare the mesoporous silica; cetyltrimethylammonium bromide was employed as porogenic agent. The silica particles were functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane alkoxide (APTES) by the sol-gel post-synthesis method. Indomethacin was incorporated into the silica functionalized with APTES and into non-functionalized silica. The resulting systems were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), specific area, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analyses (TGA). XRD attested to formation of mesoporous silica with hexagonal structure. This structure remained after silica functionalization with APTES and incorporation of indomethacin. Typical infrared spectroscopy vibrations and organic material decomposition during TGA confirmed silica functionalization and drug incorporation. The specific surface area and pore volume of the functionalized material incorporated with indomethacin decreased as compared with the specific surface area and pore volume of the non-functionalized silica containing no drug, suggesting both the functionalizing agent and the drug were present in the silica. Cytotoxicity tests conducted on normal fibroblasts (GM0479A) cells attested that the silica matrix containing indomethacin was less toxic than the free drug.

This study aimed to assess the capacity of saponite modified with n-hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and/or 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) to adsorb and remove caffeine from aqueous solutions. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) revealed increased basal spacing in the modified saponites. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) confirmed the PXRD results; it also showed how the different clay layers were stacked and provided information on the swelling of natural saponite and of the saponites functionalized with CTAB and/or APTS. Thermal analyses, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, element chemical analysis, and textural analyses confirmed functionalization of the natural saponite. The maximum adsorption capacity at equilibrium was 80.54 mg/g, indicating that the saponite modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane constitutes an efficient and suitable caffeine adsorbent.

Hybrid nanosilicas constitute a broad study field. They find application as catalysts, pigments, drug delivery systems, and biomaterials, among others, and it is possible to obtain them via the sol-gel methodology. Lanthanide ions present special properties like light emission. Their incorporation into a silica matrix can enhance their luminescent properties, which enables their application as luminescent markers. This work reports on (i) the preparation of luminescent spherical hybrid silica nanoparticles by the hydrolytic sol-gel methodology, (ii) doping of the resulting matrix with the europium(III) ion or its complex with 1,10-phenanthroline, and (iii) characterization of the final powders by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and europium(III) ion photoluminescence. The synthesized materials consisted of hybrid, amorphous, polydispersed nonspherical silicas with average size of 180 nm. Photoluminescence confirmed incorporation of the europium(III) ion and its complex into the silica matrix-the ligand-metal charge transfer band emerged in the excitation spectra. The emission spectra presented the bands corresponding to the transition of the excited state (5)D0 level to (7)FJ (J = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4). The main emission occurred in the red region; the lifetime was long. These characteristics indicated that the prepared nanospherical hybrid silicas could act as luminescent markers.

The use of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) has been considered an important alternative for medical devices once this polyester presents biomechanical, optical and biodegradable properties. Moreover, the use of PLA results in less inflammatory reactions and more recently it has been proposed its application in drug delivery systems. Genotoxicological evaluations are considered part of the battery assays in toxicological analysis. Considering the wide applications of PLA, the present work evaluated the potential cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of PLA in CHO-K1 cells, as well as its physicochemical properties. No cytotoxic effects of PLA were detected by colorimetric tetrazolium assay (XTT) analysis, and the clonogenic survival assay showed that PLA did not disrupt the replicative cell homeostasis, neither exhibited genotoxic effects as evidenced by comet and micronucleus assays. Thermogravimetric properties of PLA were not altered after contact with cells and this film exhibited ability in absorb and release Europium(III) complex. Herein, we present a cross-linked ureasil-polyether-siloxane hybrid (labeled PEO500) that can function as a stimuli-sensitive material; it swells or shrinks in response to changes in the environmental conditions and it can also, effectively and selectively, remove dyes from water solution. We also developed a methodology to separate a mixture of cationic and anionic dyes present in water. Addition of PEO500 to an aqueous solution of the anionic orange II (OII) or the ponceau S (PS) dye rendered the solution colorless, but an aqueous solution of cationic methylene blue (MB) remained unchanged after 2 h of contact with the insoluble matrix. In situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) showed that the distance of siloxane nanodomains are strongly affected by the swelling or shriking. By in situ UV-vis adsorption experiments, we found that the kinetics of OII and PS removal followed a pseudo-first-order rate equation. We accomplished B3LYP calculations, to establish which sites on the matrix interacted with the dyes and to investigate the nature of the matrix-dye chemical bonds. On the basis of the experimental and theoretical investigations, we proposed some mechanisms to explain how PEO500 adsorbs anionic dyes efficiently. This "smart" matrix is potentially applicable as an efficient, fast, selective, and convenient device in water treatment and stimuli-sensitive response materials.

YVO(4):Eu(3+) phosphors have been prepared by the hydrolytic sol-gel methodology, with and without alkaline catalyst. The solid powder was obtained by reaction between yttrium III chloride and vanadium alkoxides; the europium III chloride was used as structural probe. The powder was treated at 100, 400, 600, or 800 °C for 4 h. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and photoluminescence. The XRD patterns revealed YVO(4) crystalline phase formation for the sample prepared without the catalyst and heat-treated at 600 °C and for the sample prepared in the presence of ammonium as catalyst and heat-treated at 100 °C. The average nanosized crystallites were estimated by the Scherrer equation. The sample which was produced via alkaline catalysis underwent weight loss in two stages, at 100 and 400 °C, whereas the sample obtained without catalyst presented four stages of weight loss, at 150, 250, 400, and 650 °C. The excitation spectra of the samples treated at different temperatures displayed the charge transfer band (CTB) at 320 nm. PL data of all the samples revealed the characteristic transition bands arising from the (5)D(0) → (5)F(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) manifolds under maximum excitation at 320, 394, and 466 nm in all cases. The (5)D(0) → (7)F(2) transition often dominates the emission spectra, indicating that the Eu(3+) ion occupies a site without inversion center. The long lifetime suggests that the matrix can be applied as phosphors. In conclusion, the sol-gel methodology is a very efficient approach for the production of phosphors at low temperature.

The catalytic efficiency of takovite-aluminosilicate-chromium catalysts obtained by adsorption of Cr(3+) ions from aqueous solutions by a takovite-aluminosilicate nanocomposite adsorbent is reported. The adsorbent was synthesized by the coprecipitation method. The catalytic activity of the final Cr-catalysts depended on the amount of adsorbed chromium. (Z)-cyclooctene conversion up to 90% with total selectivity for the epoxide was achieved when the oxidation was carried out with hydrogen peroxide, at room temperature. After five consecutive runs, the catalysts maintained high activity, although after the sixth reuse, the epoxide yields strongly decreased to 35%. The catalysts were also efficient for cyclohexane oxidation, reaching up to 18% conversion, with cyclohexanone/cyclohexanol selectivity close to 1.2. On the whole, their use as catalysts gives a very interesting application for the solids obtained by adsorption of a contaminant cation such as Cr(3+).

Luminescent hybrid materials derived from kaolinite appear as promising materials for optical applications due to their specific properties. The spectroscopic behavior of terbium picolinate complexes covalently grafted on kaolinite and the influence of the secondary ligand and thermal treatment on luminescence are reported. The resulting materials were characterized by thermal analysis, element analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence. The thermogravimetric curves indicated an enhancement in the thermal stability up to 300 °C for the lanthanide complexes covalently grafted on kaolinite, with respect to the isolated complexes. The increase in the basal spacing observed by X-ray diffraction confirmed the insertion of the organic ligands into the basal space of kaolinite, involving the formation of a bond between Al-OH and the carboxylate groups, as evidenced by infrared spectroscopy. The luminescent hybrid material exhibited a stronger characteristic emission of Tb(3+) compared to the isolated complex. The excitation spectra displayed a broad band at 277 nm, assigned to a ligand-to-metal charge transfer, while the emission spectra presented bands related to the electronic transitions characteristic of the Tb(3+) ion from the excited state (5)D(4) to the states (7)F(J) (J=5, 4, and 3), with the 4→5 transition having high intensity with green emission., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

Functionalization of Brazilian São Simão kaolinite and Spanish Yunclillos saponite with the alkoxysilanes 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane is reported. The resulting hybrids were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, infrared absorption spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, which demonstrated the effectiveness of the interlamellar grafting process. The X-ray diffractograms revealed incorporation of the alkoxide molecules into the interlayer space of the clays. The displacement of the stretching bands of interlayer hydroxyls in the infrared spectra of the modified kaolinites and the increased intensity of the Mg-OH vibrations in the spectra of the modified saponites confirmed the functionalization of the clays. The thermal behavior of the organoclays confirmed the stability of the hybrids, which was dependent on the clay used for preparation of the materials.

The aims of this study were to demonstrate the synthesis of an experimental glass ionomer cement (GIC) by the non-hydrolytic sol-gel method and to evaluate its biocompatibility in comparison to a conventional glass ionomer cement (Vidrion R). Four polyethylene tubes containing the tested cements were implanted in the dorsal region of 15 rats, as follows: GI - experimental GIC and GII - conventional GIC. The external tube walls was considered the control group (CG). The rats were sacrificed 7, 21 and 42 days after implant placement for histopathological analysis. A four-point (I-IV) scoring system was used to graduate the inflammatory reaction. Regarding the experimental GIC sintherization, thermogravimetric and x-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated vitreous material formation at 110oC by the sol-gel method. For biocompatibility test, results showed a moderate chronic inflammatory reaction for GI (III), severe for GII (IV) and mild for CG (II) at 7 days. After 21 days, GI presented a mild reaction (II); GII, moderate (III) and CG, mild (II). At 42 days, GI showed a mild/absent inflammatory reaction (II to I), similar to GII (II to I). CG presented absence of chronic inflammatory reaction (I). It was concluded that the experimental GIC presented mild/absent tissue reaction after 42 days, being biocompatible when tested in the connective tissue of rats.

The preparation, characterization, and application in oxidation reactions of new biomimetic catalysts are reported. Brazilian Sao Simao kaolinite clay has been functionalized with [meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphinato]iron(III), Fe(TPFPP). To obtain the functionalized clay, the natural clay was purified by dispersion-sedimentation, expanded by insertion of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and functionalized with amino groups by substitution of DMSO with ethanolamine. These previous steps allowed clay functionalization with Fe(TPFPP), leading to a layered material with a basal spacing of 10.73 A. Clay functionalization with the porphyrin was confirmed by formation of the secondary amine, as demonstrated by FTIR bands at 3500-3700 cm(-1). UV-vis spectroscopy revealed a red shift in the Soret band of the iron porphyrin in the functionalized material as compared to the parent iron porphyrin catalyst in solution, indicating Fe(III)P --> Fe(II)P reduction. The catalytic performance of the functionalized clay was evaluated in the epoxidation of cyclooctene, with complete selectivity for the epoxide (100% epoxide yield), and ketonization of cyclohexane, cyclohexanone being the major product. The novel catalyst was also evaluated in the Baeyer-Villiger (BV) oxidation of cyclohexanone, with 85% conversion of cyclohexanone in epsilon-caprolactone, with total selectivity to epsilon-caprolactone.

This paper presents the results of the functionalization of Brazilian São Simão kaolinite with pyridine-2-carboxylic and pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acids. The functionalization involved refluxing of the pyridine-carboxylic acid in the presence of kaolinite previously intercalated with dimethyl sulfoxide; both acids effectively displaced dimethyl sulfoxide from the clay interlayer. The resulting materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, infrared absorption spectroscopy, and C and N elemental analysis. The X-ray diffractograms revealed the incorporation of the acid molecules into the interlayer space of kaolinite. The thermogravimetric curves of the kaolinite samples functionalized with the pyridine-carboxylic acids indicated that the materials were thermally stable up to 300 degrees C. The displacements of the bands due to interlayer hydroxyls in the infrared absorption spectra also confirmed the functionalization of the kaolinite with the pyridine-carboxylic acids.

Although hydrotropy is extensively used in industry, the molecular mechanism of hydrotropic solubilization has not been completely elucidated yet. In this paper the interaction between a nonionic surfactant (ethoxylated fatty alcohol containing between five and six oxyethylenic units) and sodium p-toluene sulfonate is examined. Surface tension measurements confirm that the hydrotropic effect occurs at a concentration in which the hydrotropes self-associate. Photon correlation spectroscopy studies show that for this concentration of hydrotropes a drastic reduction in the surfactant micellar radius occurs. Furthermore the luminescence of the hydrotrope used as a fluorescence probe indicates that at low concentrations p-toluene sulfonate dissolves in the surfactant micelles but beyond the minimum concentration for hydrotropic solubilization the hydrotrope is present in the aqueous phase. These results suggest that the hydrotropic effect is related to alterations in the water structure induced by the hydrotrope molecules and to the presence of hydrotrope aggregates that furnish an appropriate niche for the surfactant amphiphile.
