This paper presents a new technique for person recognition based on the fusion of hand geometric features of both the hands without any pose restrictions. All the features are extracted from normalized left and right hand images. Fusion is applied at feature level and also at decision level. Two probability based algorithms are proposed for classification. The first algorithm computes the maximum probability for nearest three neighbors. The second algorithm determines the maximum probability of the number of matched features with respect to a thresholding on distances. Based on these two highest probabilities initial decisions are made. The final decision is considered according to the highest probability as calculated by the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. Depending on the various combinations of the initial decisions, three schemes are experimented with 201 subjects for identification and verification. The correct identification rate found to be 99.5%, and the False Acceptance Rate (FAR) of 0.625% has been found during verification.

Deep Learning, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), has been successful in computer vision tasks and medical image analysis. However, modern CNNs can be overconfident, making them difficult to deploy in real-world scenarios. Researchers propose regularizing techniques, such as Label Smoothing (LS), which introduces soft labels for training data, making the classifier more regularized. LS captures disagreements or lack of confidence in the training phase, making the classifier more regularized. Although LS is quite simple and effective, traditional LS techniques utilize a weighted average between target distribution and a uniform distribution across the classes, which limits the objective of LS as well as the performance. This paper introduces a novel LS technique based on the confusion penalty, which treats model confusion for each class with more importance than others. We have performed extensive experiments with well-known CNN architectures with this technique on publicly available Colorectal Histology datasets and got satisfactory results. Since 2019, the global COVID-19 outbreak has emerged as a crucial focus in healthcare research. Although RT-PCR stands as the primary method for COVID-19 detection, its extended detection time poses a significant challenge. Consequently, supplementing RT-PCR with the pathological study of COVID-19 through CT imaging has become imperative. The current segmentation approach based on TVLoss enhances the connectivity of afflicted areas. Nevertheless, it tends to misclassify normal pixels between certain adjacent diseased regions as diseased pixels. The typical Binary cross entropy(BCE) based U-shaped network only concentrates on the entire CT images without emphasizing on the affected regions, which results in hazy borders and low contrast in the projected output. In addition, the fraction of infected pixels in CT images is much less, which makes it a challenge for segmentation models to make accurate predictions. In this paper, we propose COVID-CT-H-UNet, a COVID-19 CT segmentation network to solve these problems. To recognize the unaffected pixels between neighbouring diseased regions, extra visual layer information is captured by combining the attention module on the skip connections with the proposed composite function Bi-category Hybrid Loss. The issue of hazy boundaries and poor contrast brought on by the BCE Loss in conventional techniques is resolved by utilizing the composite function Bi-category Hybrid Loss that concentrates on the pixels in the diseased area. Digital forensic is now an unavoidable part for securing the digital world from identity theft. Higher order of crimes, dealing with a massive database is really very challenging problem for any intelligent system. Biometric is a better solution to win over the problems encountered by digital forensics. Many biometric characteristics are playing their significant roles in forensics over the decades. The potential benefits and scope of hand based modes in forensics have been investigated with an illustration of hand geometry verifi-cation method. It can be applied when effective biometric evidences are properly unavailable; gloves are damaged, and dirt or any kind of liquid can minimize the accessibility and reliability of the fingerprint or palmprint. Due to the crisis of pure uniqueness of hand features for a very large database, it may be relevant for verification only. Some unimodal and multimodal hand based biometrics (e.g. hand geometry, palmprint and hand vein) with several feature extractions, database and verification methods have been discussed with 2D, 3D and infrared images.

Biometrics is indispensable in this modern digital era for secure automated human authentication in various fields of machine learning and pattern recognition. Hand geometry is a promising physiological biometric trait with ample deployed application areas for identity verification. Due to the intricate anatomic foundation of the thumb and substantial inter-finger posture variation, satisfactory performances cannot be achieved while the thumb is included in the contact-free environment. To overcome the hindrances associated with the thumb, four finger-based (excluding the thumb) biometric approaches have been devised. In this chapter, a four-finger based biometric method has been presented. Again, selection of salient features is essential to reduce the feature dimensionality by eliminating the insignificant features. Weights are assigned according to the discriminative efficiency of the features to emphasize on the essential features. Two different strategies namely, the global and local feature selection methods are adopted based on the adaptive forward-selection and backward-elimination (FoBa) algorithm. The identification performances are evaluated using the weighted k-nearest neighbor (wk-NN) and random forest (RF) classifiers. The experiments are conducted using the selected feature subsets over the 300 subjects of the Bosphorus hand database. The best identification accuracy of 98.67%, and equal error rate (EER) of 4.6% have been achieved using the subset of 25 features which are selected by the rank-based local FoBa algorithm., Comment: 34 pages. Fine-grained image classification (FGIC) is a challenging task in computer vision for due to small visual differences among inter-subcategories, but, large intra-class variations. Deep learning methods have achieved remarkable success in solving FGIC. In this paper, we propose a fusion approach to address FGIC by combining global texture with local patch-based information. The first pipeline extracts deep features from various fixed-size non-overlapping patches and encodes features by sequential modelling using the long short-term memory (LSTM). Another path computes image-level textures at multiple scales using the local binary patterns (LBP). The advantages of both streams are integrated to represent an efficient feature vector for image classification. Human body-pose estimation is a complex problem in computer vision. Recent research interests have been widened specifically on the Sports, Yoga, and Dance (SYD) postures for maintaining health conditions. The SYD pose categories are regarded as a fine-grained image classification task due to the complex movement of body parts. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have attained significantly improved performance in solving various human body-pose estimation problems. Though decent progress has been achieved in yoga postures recognition using deep learning techniques, fine-grained sports, and dance recognition necessitates ample research attention. However, no benchmark public image dataset with sufficient inter-class and intra-class variations is available yet to address sports and dance postures classification. To solve this limitation, we have proposed two image datasets, one for 102 sport categories and another for 12 dance styles. Two public datasets, Yoga-82 which contains 82 classes and Yoga-107 represents 107 classes are collected for yoga postures. These four SYD datasets are experimented with the proposed deep model, SYD-Net, which integrates a patch-based attention (PbA) mechanism on top of standard backbone CNNs. The PbA module leverages the self-attention mechanism that learns contextual information from a set of uniform and multi-scale patches and emphasizes discriminative features to understand the semantic correlation among patches. Moreover, random erasing data augmentation is applied to improve performance. The proposed SYD-Net has achieved state-of-the-art accuracy on Yoga-82 using five base CNNs. SYD-Net's accuracy on other datasets is remarkable, implying its efficiency. Historical Document Image Binarization is a well-known segmentation problem in image processing. Despite ubiquity, traditional thresholding algorithms achieved limited success on severely degraded document images. With the advent of deep learning, several segmentation models were proposed that made significant progress in the field but were limited by the unavailability of large training datasets. To mitigate this problem, we have proposed a novel two-stage framework -- the first of which comprises a generator that generates degraded samples using variational inference and the second being a CNN-based binarization network that trains on the generated data. Recent research on biometrics focuses on achieving a high success rate of authentication and addressing the concern of various spoofing attacks. Although hand geometry recognition provides adequate security over unauthorized access, it is susceptible to presentation attack. This paper presents an anti-spoofing method toward hand biometrics. A presentation attack detection approach is addressed by assessing the visual quality of genuine and fake hand images. A threshold-based gradient magnitude similarity quality metric is proposed to discriminate between the real and spoofed hand samples. The visual hand images of 255 subjects from the Bogazici University hand database are considered as original samples. Correspondingly, from each genuine sample, we acquire a forged image using a Canon EOS 700D camera. Such fake hand images with natural degradation are considered for electronic screen display based spoofing attack detection. Furthermore, we create another fake hand dataset with artificial degradation by introducing additional Gaussian blur, salt and pepper, and speckle noises to original images. Ten quality metrics are measured from each sample for classification between original and fake hand image. The classification experiments are performed using the k-nearest neighbors, random forest, and support vector machine classifiers, as well as deep convolutional neural networks. The proposed gradient similarity-based quality metric achieves 1.5% average classification er ror using the k-nearest neighbors and random forest classifiers. An average classification error of 2.5% is obtained using the baseline evaluation with the MobileNetV2 deep network for discriminating original and different types of fake hand samples.

Convolutional neural networks often generate multiple logits and use simple techniques like addition or averaging for loss computation. But this allows gradients to be distributed equally among all paths. The proposed approach guides the gradients of backpropagation along weakest concept representations. A weakness scores defines the class specific performance of individual pathways which is then used to create a logit that would guide gradients along the weakest pathways. The proposed approach has been shown to perform better than traditional column merging techniques and can be used in several application scenarios. Not only can the proposed model be used as an efficient technique for training multiple instances of a model parallely, but also CNNs with multiple output branches have been shown to perform better with the proposed upgrade. Various experiments establish the flexibility of the learning technique which is simple yet effective in various multi-objective scenarios both empirically and statistically.

Multi-lingual script identification is a difficult task consisting of different language with complex backgrounds in scene text images. According to the current research scenario, deep neural networks are employed as teacher models to train a smaller student network by utilizing the teacher model's predictions. This process is known as dark knowledge transfer. It has been quite successful in many domains where the final result obtained is unachievable through directly training the student network with a simple architecture. In this paper, we explore dark knowledge transfer approach using long short-term memory(LSTM) and CNN based assistant model and various deep neural networks as the teacher model, with a simple CNN based student network, in this domain of multi-script identification from natural scene text images. We explore the performance of different teacher models and their ability to transfer knowledge to a student network. Object detection in natural scenes can be a challenging task. In many real-life situations, the visible spectrum is not suitable for traditional computer vision tasks. Moving outside the visible spectrum range, such as the thermal spectrum or the near-infrared (NIR) images, is much more beneficial in low visibility conditions, NIR images are very helpful for understanding the object's material quality. In this work, we have taken images with both the Thermal and NIR spectrum for the object detection task. As multi-spectral data with both Thermal and NIR is not available for the detection task, we needed to collect data ourselves. Data collection is a time-consuming process, and we faced many obstacles that we had to overcome. We train the YOLO v3 network from scratch to detect an object from multi-spectral images. Also, to avoid overfitting, we have done data augmentation and tune hyperparameters.

With the advent of mobile and hand-held cameras, document images have found their way into almost every domain. Dewarping of these images for the removal of perspective distortions and folds is essential so that they can be understood by document recognition algorithms. For this, we propose an end-to-end CNN architecture that can produce distortion free document images from warped documents it takes as input. We train this model on warped document images simulated synthetically to compensate for lack of enough natural data. Our method is novel in the use of a bifurcated decoder with shared weights to prevent intermingling of grid coordinates, in the use of residual networks in the U-Net skip connections to allow flow of data from different receptive fields in the model, and in the use of a gated network to help the model focus on structure and line level detail of the document image. Segmentation of handwritten document images into text lines and words is one of the most significant and challenging tasks in the development of a complete Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system. This paper addresses the automatic segmentation of text words directly from unconstrained Bangla handwritten document images. The popular Distance transform (DT) algorithm is applied for locating the outer boundary of the word images. This technique is free from generating the over-segmented words. A simple post-processing procedure is applied to isolate the under-segmented word images, if any. The proposed technique is tested on 50 random images taken from CMATERdb1.1.1 database. A considerable amount of success has been achieved in developing monolingual OCR systems for Indic scripts. But in a country like India, where multi-script scenario is prevalent, identifying scripts beforehand becomes obligatory. In this paper, we present the significance of Gabor wavelets filters in extracting directional energy and entropy distributions for 11 official handwritten scripts namely, Bangla, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurumukhi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and Roman. The experimentation is conducted at block level based on a quad-tree decomposition approach and evaluated using six different well-known classifiers. Finally, the best identification accuracy of 96.86% has been achieved by Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) classifier for 3-fold cross validation at level-2 decomposition. In a multilingual country like India where 12 different official scripts are in use, automatic identification of handwritten script facilitates many important applications such as automatic transcription of multilingual documents, searching for documents on the web/digital archives containing a particular script and for the selection of script specific Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system in a multilingual environment. In this paper, we propose a robust method towards identifying scripts from the handwritten documents at text line-level. The recognition is based upon features extracted using Chain Code Histogram (CCH) and Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). Capturing images of documents is one of the easiest and most used methods of recording them. These images however, being captured with the help of handheld devices, often lead to undesirable distortions that are hard to remove. We propose a supervised Gated and Bifurcated Stacked U-Net module to predict a dewarping grid and create a distortion free image from the input. While the network is trained on synthetically warped document images, results are calculated on the basis of real world images. The novelty in our methods exists not only in a bifurcation of the U-Net to help eliminate the intermingling of the grid coordinates, but also in the use of a gated network which adds boundary and other minute line level details to the model. The end-to-end pipeline proposed by us achieves state-of-the-art performance on the DocUNet dataset after being trained on just 8 percent of the data used in previous methods.

In any multi-script environment, handwritten script classification is of paramount importance before the document images are fed to their respective Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engines. Over the years, this complex pattern classification problem has been solved by researchers proposing various feature vectors mostly having large dimension, thereby increasing the computation complexity of the whole classification model. Feature Selection (FS) can serve as an intermediate step to reduce the size of the feature vectors by restricting them only to the essential and relevant features. In our paper, we have addressed this issue by introducing a new FS algorithm, called Hybrid Swarm and Gravitation based FS (HSGFS). This algorithm is made to run on 3 feature vectors introduced in the literature recently - Distance-Hough Transform (DHT), Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Modified log-Gabor (MLG) filter Transform. Three state-of-the-art classifiers namely, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are used for the handwritten script classification. Handwritten datasets, prepared at block, text-line and word level, consisting of officially recognized 12 Indic scripts are used for the evaluation of our method. An average improvement in the range of 2-5 % is achieved in the classification accuracies by utilizing only about 75-80 % of the original feature vectors on all three datasets. COVID-19 has created a global pandemic with high morbidity and mortality in 2020. Novel coronavirus (nCoV), also known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2), is responsible for this deadly disease. International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) has declared that nCoV is highly genetically similar to SARS-CoV epidemic in 2003 (89% similarity). Limited number of clinically validated Human-nCoV protein interaction data is available in the literature. With this hypothesis, the present work focuses on developing a computational model for nCoV-Human protein interaction network, using the experimentally validated SARS-CoV-Human protein interactions. Initially, level-1 and level-2 human spreader proteins are identified in SARS-CoV-Human interaction network, using Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) model. These proteins are considered as potential human targets for nCoV bait proteins. A gene-ontology based fuzzy affinity function has been used to construct the nCoV-Human protein interaction network at 99.98% specificity threshold. This also identifies the level-1 human spreaders for COVID-19 in human protein-interaction network. Level-2 human spreaders are subsequently identified using the SIS model. Finding local invariant patterns in handwrit-ten characters and/or digits for optical character recognition is a difficult task. Variations in writing styles from one person to another make this task challenging. We have proposed a non-explicit feature extraction method using a multi-scale multi-column skip convolutional neural network in this work. Local and global features extracted from different layers of the proposed architecture are combined to derive the final feature descriptor encoding a character or digit image. Our method is evaluated on four publicly available datasets of isolated handwritten Bangla characters and digits. Exhaustive comparative analysis against contemporary methods establishes the efficacy of our proposed approach.

In all developing and developed countries in the world, skin diseases are becoming a very frequent health problem for the humans of all age groups. Skin problems affect mental health, develop addiction to alcohol and drugs and sometimes causes social isolation. Considering the importance, we propose an automatic technique to detect three popular skin diseases- Leprosy, Tinea versicolor and Vitiligofrom the images of skin lesions. The proposed technique involves Weber local descriptor and Local binary pattern to represent texture pattern of the affected skin regions. This ensemble technique achieved 91.38% accuracy using multi-level support vector machine classifier, where features are extracted from different regions that are based on center of gravity. We have also applied some popular deep learn-ing networks such as MobileNet, ResNet_152, GoogLeNet,DenseNet_121, and ResNet_101. We get 89% accuracy using ResNet_101. The ensemble approach clearly outperform all of the used deep learning networks. This imaging tool will be useful for early skin disease screening.

Cytology is the branch of pathology which deals with the microscopic examination of cells for diagnosis of carcinoma or inflammatory conditions. Automation in cytology started in the early 1950s with the aim to reduce manual efforts in diagnosis of cancer. The inflush of intelligent technological units with high computational power and improved specimen collection techniques helped to achieve its technological heights. In the present survey, we focus on such image processing techniques which put steps forward towards the automation of cytology. We take a short tour to 17 types of cytology and explore various segmentation and/or classification techniques which evolved during last three decades boosting the concept of automation in cytology. It is observed, that most of the works are aligned towards three types of cytology: Cervical, Breast and Lung, which are discussed elaborately in this paper. The user-end systems developed during that period are summarized to comprehend the overall growth in the respective domains. To be precise, we discuss the diversity of the state-of-the-art methodologies, their challenges to provide prolific and competent future research directions inbringing the cytology-based commercial systems into the mainstream.

The present work demonstrates a fast and improved technique for dewarping nonlinearly warped document images. The images are first dewarped at the page-level by estimating optimum inverse projections using curvilinear homography. The quality of the process is then estimated by evaluating a set of metrics related to the characteristics of the text lines and rectilinear objects for measuring parallelism, orthogonality, etc. These are designed specifically to estimate the quality of the dewarping process without the need of any ground truth. If the quality is estimated to be unsatisfactory, the page-level dewarping process is repeated with finer approximations. This is followed by a line-level dewarping process that makes granular corrections to the warps in individual text-lines. The methodology has been tested on the CBDAR 2007 / IUPR 2011 document image dewarping dataset and is seen to yield the best OCR accuracy in the shortest amount of time, till date. The usefulness of the methodology has also been evaluated on the DocUNet 2018 dataset with some minor tweaks, and is seen to produce comparable results.

In the literature, many fusion techniques are registered for the segmentation of images, but they primarily focus on observed output or belief score or probability score of the output classes. In the present work, we have utilized inter source statistical dependency among different classifiers for ensembling of different deep learning techniques for semantic segmentation of images. For this purpose, in the present work, a class-wise Copula-based ensembling method is newly proposed for solving the multi-class segmentation problem. Experimentally, it is observed that the performance has improved more for semantic image segmentation using the proposed class-specific Copula function than the traditionally used single Copula function for the problem. The performance is also compared with three state-of-the-art ensembling methods.

Deep neural network-based architectures give promising results in various domains including pattern recognition. Finding the optimal combination of the hyper-parameters of such a large-sized architecture is tedious and requires a large number of laboratory experiments. But, identifying the optimal combination of a hyper-parameter or appropriate kernel size for a given architecture of deep learning is always a challenging and tedious task. Here, we introduced a genetic algorithm-based technique to reduce the efforts of finding the optimal combination of a hyper-parameter (kernel size) of a convolutional neural network-based architecture. The method is evaluated on three popular datasets of different handwritten Bangla characters and digits. Capsule networks have gained a lot of popularity in short time due to its unique approach to model equivariant class specific properties as capsules from images. However the dynamic routing algorithm comes with a steep computational complexity. In the proposed approach we aim to create scalable versions of the capsule networks that are much faster and provide better accuracy in problems with higher number of classes. By using dynamic routing to extract intermediate features instead of generating output class specific capsules, a large increase in the computational speed has been observed.
