Simple Summary: Quails are becoming increasingly popular for their meat and eggs, and thus, the productivity of laying hens, and how that can be predicted, is of growing interest to quail producers. Because of this, we wanted to find out whether we could predict the performance of laying hens (typically expressed as the number of eggs produced multiplied by the egg weight—the so-called total egg mass) simply by looking at certain growth traits (i.e., body weight, surface area, and volume), as well as the metabolic rate among eight Japanese quail breeds. To succeed in this analysis, we developed a novel method for calculating the volume and surface area of a quail body. As a result, we derived a new mathematical formula called the metabolic index, which included the measurements of body weight, surface area, and volume. We discovered that the total egg mass in quails can be judged from these growth parameters, particularly when we examined the slope angles of the trend lines in the graphs pertaining to these parameters. Abstract: The aim of the current study was to assess the female metabolic rate and test the hypothesis that there is a relationship between the egg productivity of Japanese quails from eight breeds and their morphometric, or growth, parameters. When we wish to describe our Universe, our planet Earth, natural environment, and our surroundings, artists often use imagery, whereas scientists attempt to use mathematical formulae. It begs the fundamental question: was the nature and the universe preceded by a clear mathematical design, or did the mathematic description appear subsequently? In this review, we addressed a biological issue of shapes in nature and, specifically, egg shapes in birds, including poultry, as one of most exciting avian adaptations. In order to compute the shape and volume of eggs as a marker of fitness, discover subtle nuances of the evolution of nest parasitism as in cuckoos, detect double-yolk eggs in poultry, develop methods for hatchability improvement and in ovo sex identification, and other things, an exact description of egg shape is urgently needed. We overviewed here the recent mathematical development of a universal egg shape equation called the Narushin–Romanov–Griffin (NRG) model. Following the Latin term “ab ovo” meaning “from the beginning, the origin, the egg”, the NRG model successfully tried to combine two concepts, biological object and mathematical geometry, and enabled to fulfil the formidable task of describing, mathematically, any bird’s egg. Eventually, a series of mathematical formulae was developed that could define bird eggs of any shape present in nature including spherical, elliptical, ovoid and pear-shaped ones.

Of the variety of bird egg shapes, perhaps the most fascinating and unusual are pyriform (pear-shaped, or conical) eggs. Among oologists, there is still no consensus on what exactly caused this evolutionary and ecological adaptation. To address this, our research was aimed to develop a minimalistic mathematical model for an accurate description of the pyriform egg contour, using the minimum number of measurements. As such, egg length (L) and its maximum breadth (B) were found to be an optimal set of parameters that were easy enough to measure with the required accuracy. We tested four analytical premises that can be used for successful pyriform egg shape modelling. To validate these four model premises, images of pyriform eggs characteristic of 32 species were used. As a result, we derived a novel mathematical dependence that we called the 'pyriform model with two parameters'. Based on this model, it is feasible to geometrically reconstruct any pyriform egg profile under study using only two egg measurements, i.e., L and B. Since pyriform eggs are characteristic of wild bird species that are most often investigated in the field, the measurement of only two parameters minimizes the time spent and, accordingly, the stress factor on the animals. The least error estimate for the new model was 3.9%, which turned out to be even more accurate than that of the previously developed model with three parameters.

In meat-type poultry breeding, pectoral angle (PA) is a conventional anatomical indicator for changes in body conformation and meat traits; its correlation to egg performance is however deemed controversial. In this context, we revisited, assessed and put forward evidence for the usefulness of this classic phenotypic variable and its specific integrative index of pectoral angle-to-body weight ratio (PA/BW). Specifically, we identified respective correlations and used them for distinguishing the major categories (production types) of diverse chicken breeds under the traditional classification model (TCM) and genotypic clustering models of the global chicken gene pool subdivision. Also, the usefulness of the supplementary integrative egg mass yield index (EMY) for this objective was demonstrated. Because of estimating the total mass of eggs laid (i.e. egg number times egg weight), EMY can serve as an indicator of egg production. Direct approximation of EMY values by PA and BW values did not lead to significant correlation dependences between these indicators in each of the four breed utility types according to TCM. However, using the ratio of PA to BW, instead of PA and BW alone, resulted in significant correlation of EMY with PA/BW, allowing for distinction between egg-type and non-productive breeds. The validity of the proposed correlation-based models was supported by PCA and Neighbor Joining clustering analyses. Collectively, we suggested that PA can be a potentially correlated trait for selecting hens and roosters in breeding flocks to boost egg yield. These results can also be applied to chicken breeding as well as conservation- and phenome-related research.

Simple Summary: Artificial selection has been applied to domesticated birds for many decades. More recently, this selection has made use of so-called single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers—simple variants in a DNA sequence. These SNPs can be used for whole-genome screening to detect the unique traces of areas of the genome that are subject to selection. Doing this may help to shed light on the evolutionary and family history (phylogeny) of domestic Japanese quails of different breeds and utility types (e.g., egg, meat or dual-purpose breeds). In this study, 99 birds were used, representing eight breeds (11% of the world’s quail gene pool) and various purposes of use to gather genetic (whole-genome) data in the first-ever analysis of its kind performed on domestic quails. We thereby uncovered evolutionary relationships and points of divergence of individual quail breeds, gleaning important insights into the genetic diversity of domestic quail breeds and their future breeding potential. A novel subdiscipline of bionics is emerging in the form of ‘egg-inspired engineering’ through the use of egg-shaped ovoids as thin-walled tanks and building structures. Hügelschäffer’s and Narushin’s models of egg geometry are highly applicable within this proposed subdiscipline. Here we conducted a comparative analysis between the two models with respect to some of the most important egg parameters. These included contents volume, shell volume, and the location of the neutral axis along the shell thickness. As a first step, theoretical studies using the Narushin’s model were carried out due to the lack (or limited amount) of data on the geometric relationships of parameters and available calculation formulae. Considering experimental data accumulated in the engineering and construction industries, we postulate a hypothesis that there is a correlation between location of the neutral axis and the strength of the walls in the egg-shaped structure. We suggest that the use of Narushin’s model is preferable to Hügelschäffer’s model for designing thin-walled shelled vessels and egg-shaped building structures. This is due to its relative simplicity (because of the requirement for only two initial parameters in the basic equation), optimal geometry in terms of material costs per unit of internal capacity, and effective prerequisites for shell strength characteristics.

Development of nondestructive techniques for estimating egg parameters requires a comprehensive approach based on mathematical theory. Basic properties used to solve theoretical and applied problems in this respect are volume (V) and surface area (S). There are respective formulae for calculating V and S of spherical, ellipsoidal, and ovoid eggs in classical egg geometry; however, the mathematical description and calculation of these parameters for pyriform eggs have remained elusive. In the present study, we derived the appropriate formulae and established that this would be not only applicable and valid for the category of pyriform eggs, but also universal and explicit for all other naturally occurring avian egg shapes. Thus, we have demonstrated “mathematical progression” of this natural object, considering the egg as a sequence of geometric figures that transform from one to another in the following sequence of shapes: sphere → ellipsoid → ovoid (whose profile corresponds to Hügelschäffer's model) → pyriform ovoid.

Analysis of all egg shapes can be done using four geometric figures: sphere, ellipsoid, ovoid, and pyriform (conical or pear-shaped). The first three have a clear mathematical definition, each derived from the expression of the previous, but a formula for the pyriform profile has yet to be derived. To rectify this, we introduce an additional function into the ovoid formula. The subsequent mathematical model fits a completely novel geometric shape that can be characterized as the last stage in the evolution of the sphere—ellipsoid—Hügelschäffer's ovoid transformation, and it is applicable to any egg geometry. The required measurements are the egg length, maximum breadth, and diameter at the terminus from the pointed end. This mathematical analysis and description represents the sought-for universal formula and is a significant step in understanding not only the egg shape itself, but also how and why it evolved, thus making widespread biological and technological applications theoretically possible.

Simple Summary Salmonellosis is one of the most severe zoonotic diseases transmitted to humans through animal products (especially poultry meat and eggs). Essential oils (EOs)-based feed additives in poultry nutrition are a possible alternative replacement of antimicrobials to fight this infection. In the present study on laying hens, we tested a phytobiotic, Intebio®, and elucidated formation of immune response and changes in cecal microbiocenosis and biochemical/immunological variables in blood caused by Salmonella. Changes in differential gene expression were observed at both one and seven days post-inoculation in the hens’ intestines, revealing similarities with known mammalian/human tissue-specific expression. The results of this study suggest that the challenge of birds with Salmonella had a negative effect, while phytobiotic intake had a positive effect on the status of their gastrointestinal microbiome, their level of metabolism, and their performance. Abstract One of the main roles in poultry resistance to infections caused by Salmonella is attributed to host immunity and intestinal microbiota. We conducted an experiment that involved challenging Lohmann White laying hens with Salmonella Enteritidis (SE), feeding them a diet supplemented with an EOs-based phytobiotic Intebio®. At 1 and 7 days post-inoculation, the expression profiles of eight genes related to immunity, transport of nutrients in the intestine, and metabolism were examined. Cecal microbiome composition and blood biochemical/immunological indices were also explored and egg production traits recorded. As a result, the SE challenge of laying hens and Intebio® administration had either a suppressive or activating effect on the expression level of the studied genes (e.g., IL6 and BPIFB3), the latter echoing mammalian/human tissue-specific expression. Avian genomes typically consist of ~10 pairs of macro- and ~30 pairs of microchromosomes. While inter-chromosomally, a pattern emerges of very little change (with notable exceptions) throughout evolution, intrachromosomal changes remain relatively poorly studied. To rectify this, here we use a pan-avian universally hybridising set of 74 chicken bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) probes on the macrochromosomes of eight bird species: common blackbird, Atlantic canary, Eurasian woodcock, helmeted guinea fowl, houbara bustard, mallard duck, and rock dove. A combination of molecular cytogenetic, bioinformatics, and mathematical analyses allowed the building of comparative cytogenetic maps, reconstruction of a putative Neognathae ancestor, and assessment of chromosome rearrangement patterns and phylogenetic relationships in the studied neognath lineages. We observe that, as with our previous studies, chicken appears to have the karyotype most similar to the ancestor; however, previous reports of an increased rate of intrachromosomal change in Passeriformes (songbirds) appear not to be the case in our dataset. The use of this universally hybridizing probe set is applicable not only for the re-tracing of avian karyotype evolution but, potentially, for reconstructing genome assemblies.
