We developed a metallic pressure cell made of nickel-chromium-aluminum (NiCrAl) for use with a non-destructive pulse magnet and a magnetic susceptibility measurement apparatus with a proximity detector oscillator (PDO) in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 51 T under pressures of up to 2.1 GPa. Both the sample and sensor coil of the PDO were placed in the cell so that the magnetic signal from NiCrAl would not overlay the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility of the sample. A systematic investigation of the Joule heating originating from metallic parts of the pressure cell revealed that the temperature at the sample position remains at almost 1.4 K until approximately 80 $\%$ of the maximum applied magnetic field ($H_{\rm max}$) in the field-ascending process (e.g., 40 T for $H_{\rm max}$ of 51 T). In this study, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments for Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 metamagnetic shape memory alloy were performed under high magnetic fields up to 12 T using a pulsed magnet. Field-induced reverse transformation to austenite phase caused considerable changes in the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) signals and the magnetic moments of the ferromagnetic coupling between Mn, Ni, and Co were determined. The spin magnetic moment, Mspin, and orbital magnetic moment, Morb, of Mn atom in the induced austenite ferromagnetic phase, estimated based on the magneto-optical sum rule, were 3.2 and 0.13 {\mu}B, respectively, resulting in an Morb / Mspin ratio of 0.04. In the element-specific magnetization curves recorded at 150 K, metamagnetic behavior associated with the field-induced reverse transformation is clearly observed and reverse transformation finishing magnetic field and martensitic transformation starting magnetic field are detected. There was almost no difference in the magnetically averaged XAS spectrum for Mn-L2,3 edges between in the martensite and in the magnetic field-induced austenite phases, however, it was visible for Ni, indicating that Ni 3d-electrons mainly contribute to martensitic transformation., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

Neutron diffraction with static and pulsed magnetic fields is used to directly probe the magnetic structures in LiNiPO$_4$ up to 25T and 42T, respectively. By combining these results with magnetometry and electric polarization measurements under pulsed fields, the magnetic and magnetoelectric phases are investigated up to 56T applied along the easy $c$-axis. In addition to the already known transitions at lower fields, three new ones are reported at 37.6, 39.4 and 54T. Ordering vectors are identified with ${\bf Q}_{\mathrm{VI}}$ = (0, 1/3, 0) in the interval 37.6--39.4T and ${\bf Q}_{\mathrm{VII}}$ = (0, 0, 0) in the interval 39.4-54T. A quadratic magnetoelectric effect is discovered in the ${\bf Q}_{\mathrm{VII}}$ = (0, 0, 0) phase and the field-dependence of the induced electric polarization is described using a simple mean-field model. The observed magnetic structure and magnetoelectric tensor elements point to a change in the lattice symmetry in this phase. We speculate on the possible physical mechanism responsible for the magnetoelectric effect in LiNiPO4.

We report on the experimental results of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electron spin resonance (ESR), and high-field magnetization measurements on a polycrystalline sample of the spin-$1/2$ distorted honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$). Magnetic susceptibility shows a broad peak at about 25~K, which is typical of a low dimensional antiferromagnet, and no long range magnetic order is observed down to 0.6~K in the specific heat measurements. Magnetization curve up to 70~T at 1.4~K shows triple stepwise jumps. Assuming three different exchange bonds $J_{\rm A}$, $J_{\rm B}$ and $J_{\rm C}$ from the structure, the calculated magnetization curve reproduces the observed one when $J_{\rm A}/k_{\rm B} = 43.7~{\rm K}$, $J_{\rm B}/J_{\rm A} = 1$ and $J_{\rm C}/J_{\rm A} = 0.2$ except the magnetization near 70~T, where the observed magnetization indicates another step while the calculated magnetization becomes saturated. We have measured the magnetization of the organic compound BIP-BNO (3,5'-bis(N-tert-butylaminoxyl)-3',5-dibromobiphenyl) up to 76 T where the magnetization is saturated. The S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg spin-ladder model accounts for the obtained experimental data regarding the magnetization curve, which is clarified using the quantum Monte Carlo method. The exchange constants on the rung and the side rail of the ladder are estimated to be J(rung)/kB = 65.7 K and J(leg)/kB = 14.1 K, respectively, deeply in the strong coupling region: J(rung)/J(leg) > 1., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

The layered compound $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is composed of a honeycomb lattice of magnetic Ru$^{3+}$ ions with the $4d^5$ electronic state. We have investigated the magnetic properties of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ via magnetization and specific heat measurements using single crystals. It was observed that $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_{t}\,{\simeq}\,150$ K accompanied by fairly large hysteresis. This structural phase transition is expected to be similar to that observed in closely related CrCl$_3$. The magnetizations and magnetic susceptibilities are strongly anisotropic, which mainly arise from the anisotropic $g$-factors, i.e., $g_{ab}\,{\simeq}\,2.5$ and $g_c\,{\simeq}\,0.4$ for magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the $ab$ plane, respectively. These $g$-factors and the obtained entropy indicate that the effective spin of Ru$^{3+}$ is one-half, which results from the low-spin state. Specific heat data show that magnetic ordering occurs in four steps at zero magnetic field. The successive magnetic phase transitions should be ascribed to the competition among exchange interactions. The magnetic phase diagram for $H\,{\parallel}\,ab$ is obtained. We discuss the strongly anisotropic $g$-factors in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ and deduce that the exchange interaction is strongly XY-like. $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is magnetically described as a three-dimensionally coupled XY-like frustrated magnet on a honeycomb lattice., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We present a pulsed-magnet system that enables x-ray single-crystal diffraction in addition to powder and spectroscopic studies with the magnetic field applied on or close to the scattering plane. The apparatus consists of a single large-bore solenoid, cooled by liquid nitrogen. A second independent closed-cycle cryostat is used for cooling samples near liquid helium temperatures. Pulsed magnetic fields close to $\sim 30$ T with a zero-to-peak-field rise time of $\sim$2.9 ms are generated by discharging a 40 kJ capacitor bank into the magnet coil. The unique characteristic of this instrument is the preservation of maximum scattering angle ($\sim 23.6^\circ$) on the entrance and exit sides of the magnet bore by virtue of a novel double-funnel insert. This instrument will facilitate x-ray diffraction and spectroscopic studies that are impractical, if not impossible, to perform using split-pair and narrow-opening solenoid magnets, and offers a practical solution for preserving optical access in future higher-field pulsed magnets., Comment: Accepted for publication in Rev. The two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin system (CuCl)LaNb2O7 has a spin-singlet ground state with a gap of 2.3 meV, while the isostructural material (CuBr)LaNb2O7 displays collinear antiferromagnetic order at TN = 32 K. Here we report on the synthesis of solid solution (CuCl1-xBrx)LaNb2O7 (0 < x < 1), and its structural and magnetic properties by means of magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, and neutron diffraction studies. The x-dependence of cell parameters follows Vegards law, verifying the uniform distribution of Cl and Br atoms at the halide site, though a more complex structural evolution is inferred from an opposing correlation between the intra- and interlayer cell distances (vs. x). 5%-Br substitution is found to induce antiferromagnetic order with TN = 7 K, consistent with a recent mSR study, and the magnetic structure is collinear, having a significantly reduced moment. Further Br substitution leads to a linear increase in TN up to x = 1. These results indicate that (CuCl)LaNb2O7 is located in the vicinity of the quantum phase boundary., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Co$_{4}$B$_{6}$O$_{13}$ contains undistorted tetrahedral clusters of magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ions. The high-field magnetization of this magnet exhibits a periodic undulation indicating quantization of the total spin number per cluster. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat reveal that the ground state is composed of several different singlet states, reflecting the high symmetry of the spin tetrahedron. An exact diagonalization calculation taking account of single-ion type anisotropies and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions reproduces the expretimental results very well., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures. Magnetic properties of the spin-1/2 kagome-like compound volborthite are studied using a high-quality polycrystalline sample. It is evidenced from magnetization and specific heat measurements that the spins on the kagome lattice still fluctuate at low temperature, down to T = 60 mK that corresponds to 1/1500 of the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction, exhibiting neither a conventional long-range order nor a spin gap. In contrast, 51V NMR experiments revealed a sharp peak at 1 K in relaxation rate, which indicates that a certain exotic order occurs. Surprisingly, we have observed three "steps" in magnetization as a function of magnetic field, suggesting that at least four liquid-like or other quantum states exist under magnetic fields., Comment: J. Thermodynamic properties of a tetramer ferro-ferro-antiferro-antiferromagnetic Ising-Heisenberg bond alternating chain are investigated by the use of an exact mapping transformation technique. Exact results for the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat in the zero as well as nonzero magnetic field are presented and discussed in detail. Susceptibility, ESR and magnetization measurements have been performed on si ngle crystals of an S=1 bond alternating chain compound: [Ni(333-tet)(\mu-NO _2)](ClO_4) (333-tet = N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)propane-1,3-diamine) and the c ompound doped with a small amount of Zn. We observed an anomalous angular de pendence in the Zn-doped sample. These behaviors are well explained by the m odel based on the VBS picture for the singlet-dimer phase. We report the results of magnetic measurements on a powder sample of NiCu(pba)(D_2O)_3 \cdot 2D_2O$ (pba=1,3-propylenebis(oxamato)) which is one of the prototypical examples of an $S$=1/2 and 1 ferrimagnetic chain. Susceptibility($\chi$) shows a monotonous increase with decreasing temperature (T) and reaches a maximum at about 7 K. In the plot of $\chi T$ versus $T$, the experimental data exhibit a broad minimum and are fit to the $\chi T$ curve calculated for the ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chain composed of S=1/2 and 1. From this fit, we have evaluated the nearest-neighbor exchange constant $J/k_B=121 K$, the g-values of Ni$^{2+}$ and Cu$^{2+}$, $g_{Ni}$=2.22 and $g_{Cu}$=2.09, respectively.
