Despite global commitments and efforts, a gender-based division of paid and unpaid work persists. To identify how psychological factors, national policies, and the broader sociocultural context contribute to this inequality, we assessed parental-leave intentions in young adults (18–30 years old) planning to have children (N = 13,942; 8,880 identified as women; 5,062 identified as men) across 37 countries that varied in parental-leave policies and societal gender equality. In all countries, women intended to take longer leave than men. National parental-leave policies and women’s political representation partially explained cross-national variations in the gender gap. Gender gaps in leave intentions were paradoxically larger in countries with more gender-egalitarian parental-leave policies (i.e., longer leave available to both fathers and mothers). Interestingly, this cross-national variation in the gender gap was driven by cross-national variations in women’s (rather than men’s) leave intentions. Financially generous leave and gender-egalitarian policies (linked to men’s higher uptake in prior research) were not associated with leave intentions in men. Rather, men’s leave intentions were related to their individual gender attitudes. Leave intentions were inversely related to career ambitions. We aimed to explore the relationship between cortisol response to psychosocial stress, mental distress, fatigue and HRQoL in individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD) after recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS). A cross-sectional study initially included 113 subjects (88% men, 53 ± 7 years) 1–3 weeks after ACS. Cortisol response was assessed by measuring salivary cortisol during Trier Social Stress Test. Mental distress was measured with Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Type D Scale-14. Fatigue symptoms were evaluated using Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory 20-items, while Health related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed with 36-Item Short Form Medical Outcome Questionnaire. After conducting multivariable linear regression analyses, diminished cortisol response during public speech was significantly associated with higher anxiety symptoms (β=-0.224; p = 0.035), while diminished cortisol response during pre-task preparation was significantly linked with the presence of Type D personality (β=-0.290; p = 0.006; β=-0.282; p = 0.008 respectively), even after controlling for confounders (i.e., sex, age, education, NYHA functional class, beta-blockers and baseline levels of cortisol measures). We found that mental distress, but not fatigue and HRQoL, was linked with blunted cortisol response during psychosocial stress, independently of potential covariates.

This study aims to evaluate patients with limited state of changes in coronary arteries detected by coronary angiography, the dynamics of these changes over the two years, identify the relevant diagnostic criteria, and assess the efficacy of applied treatment by using speckle tracking echocardiography. Peak radial and circumferential strain and SR (systolic, early, and late diastolic strains) were measured based on the short-axis view; peak longitudinal strain and SR were measured from the apical side of four- two- and three-chamber views. Radial, longitudinal (GLS), circumferential global and regional strains were calculated as an average of measurements. All patients (n − 146) were assigned to normal (control) and CAD groups according to cardiac angiography results. 128 of them were evaluated repeatedly after two years. Depending on angiography findings, LAD (85.83%) stenosis predominate, when subsequently fewer instances of RCA (52.5%) or LCX (40.83%) were observed. Most (about 80%) of the patients had one or two-vessel disease and only 20% had systemic all three-vessel disease. Analysis of STE data in groups during a two-year study period showed statistically reliable differences associated with a particular coronary artery. In the control group: RCA – myocardial circumferential strain (p − 0.037); LAD – no changes; LCX – early (p − 0.013) and late diastolic longitudinal (p − 0.033) strains. Subsequently, in the CAD group: RCA – diastolic circumferential strain rate (p−0.007); LAD –myocardial longitudinal strain (p − 0.006), systolic longitudinal (p − 0.038) and circumferential strain (p − 0.012) rates, early diastolic circumferential (p−0.008) and late diastolic longitudinal (p−0.037) strain rates; LCX – myocardial longitudinal (p−0.049) strain. BackgroundHealth-related quality of life (HRQoL) is known to be impaired in individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD), especially in those after a recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Heart failure (HF) is a common burden in this population that significantly contributes to worsening HRQoL. To accurately measure the level of HRQoL in individuals with CAD after ACS, disease-specific scales, such as the Minnesota living with heart failure questionnaire (MLHFQ), are recommended. Nevertheless, to date, there has not been a study that would comprehensively evaluate the psychometric properties of the MLHFQ in a large sample of individuals with CAD after ACS. The debate regarding the internal structure of MLHFQ is also still present. Hence, this study aimed to translate the MLHFQ and evaluate its internal structure, reliability/precision, and validity in individuals with CAD following ACS in Lithuania.MethodsIn the cross-sectional study, 1,083 participants (70% men, age M = 58, SD = 9) were evaluated for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. HRQoL was measured using the MLHFQ and the Short Form-36 health survey (SF-36). In addition, exercise capacity (EC) was also evaluated in the study patients, using a standardized computer-driven bicycle ergometer.ResultsThe internal consistency of the MLHFQ subscales (0.79−0.88) was found to be good. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) provided the support for the three-factor model (“physical domain,” “social domain,” and “emotional domain”) of the MLHFQ and showed acceptable fit [comparative fit indices (CFI) = 0.894; goodness-of-fit (GFI) = 0.898; non-normal fit index (NFI) = 0.879, and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.073]. Regarding convergent evidence, significant associations were found between the MLHFQ domains and the SF-36 domains and EC (r’s range 0.11−0.58).ConclusionThe current study completed cultural validation and provided further information on the psychometric characteristics of the MLHFQ in Lithuania, suggesting MLHFQ as a valid and reliable instrument to measure HRQoL. The Lithuanian version of MLHFQ is best described by a three-factor solution, measuring physical, social, and emotional dimensions of HRQoL among individuals with CAD following ACS.

BackgroundFatigue and psychophysiological reactions to mental stress are known to be problematic in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Currently, studies exploring the relationship between fatigue and cardiovascular reactivity to stress are scarce and inconsistent. The current study aimed to investigate the links between cardiovascular response to mental stress and fatigue in CAD patients after acute coronary syndrome (ACS).MethodsThe cross-sectional study investigated 142 CAD patients (85% males, 52 ± 8 years) within 2–3 weeks after recent myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris. Fatigue symptoms were measured using Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory 20-items, while cardiovascular reactivity to stress [i.e., systolic (S) and diastolic (D) blood pressure (ΔBP), and heart rate (ΔHR)] was evaluated during Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). In addition, participants completed psychometric measures, including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale and the Type D Scale-14. Multivariable linear regression analyses were completed to evaluate associations between fatigue and cardiovascular response to TSST, while controlling for confounders.ResultsAfter controlling for baseline levels of cardiovascular measures, age, gender, education, heart failure severity, arterial hypertension, smoking history, use of nitrates, anxiety and depressive symptoms, Type D Personality, perceived task difficulty, and perceived task efforts, cardiovascular reactivity to anticipatory stress was inversely associated with both global fatigue (ΔHR: β = –0.238; p = 0.04) and mental fatigue (ΔSBP: β = –0.244; p = 0.04; ΔHR β = –0.303; p = 0.01) as well as total fatigue (ΔSBP: β = –0.331; p = 0.01; ΔHR: β = –0.324; p = 0.01).ConclusionIn CAD patients after ACS, fatigue was linked with diminished cardiovascular function during anticipation of a mental stress challenge, even after inclusion of possible confounders. Further similar studies exploring other psychophysiological stress responses are warranted.

Aims Emerging studies suggest an association exists between coronary artery disease (CAD) and the development of neurodegenerative diseases, with CAD acting as a precursor. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between baseline measures of cognitive functioning and long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in individuals with CAD with specification to Type D personality traits and sex. Methods and results This prospective observational cohort study consisted of 864 participants (mean age 58 SD = 9 years, 74.0% men) with CAD after acute coronary syndrome. Baseline characteristics included comprehensive cognitive testing, measures of sociodemographic and clinical factors, and psychological assessment scales, such as Type D personality scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. The Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire assessed participants’ HRQoL, conducted through phone interviews at baseline, every 6 months for up to 2 years, and after 5 years. Cognitive functioning correlated with HRQoL at all time intervals over the 5-year follow-up. Regarding sex and Type D personality, significant differences emerged in associations between impaired cognitive functioning at baseline and HRQoL measured over the period of 5 years. Men participants with characteristics of Type D personality were especially vulnerable to impaired cognitive functioning affecting the 5-year quality of life. Conclusion Men with CAD who obtained scores indicating characteristics of Type D personality were significantly more likely to have lower baseline cognitive functions and long-term HRQoL outcomes. This information could inform healthcare practitioners to screen for personality characteristics and closely follow-up those at a greater risk.

Background: Individuals with insulin resistance (IR) have a high risk of diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and they are more likely to have depression. Furthermore, IR by itself is a major cardiovascular risk factor in healthy persons. Thus, we aimed to investigate IR in association with thyroid function, psychoemotional state, and cardiovascular risk factors among 45–84-year-old citizens of Palanga. Methods: A randomized epidemiological study was performed with 850 subjects. All participants were evaluated for sociodemographic, clinical, and cardiovascular risk factors and biochemical analysis. IR was evaluated by the homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR). Results: All study participants were stratified into groups without IR (HOMA-IR ≤ 2.7) and with IR (HOMA-IR &gt, 2.7). The analysis of parameters between the two study groups showed some statistically significant relationships between IR and cardiovascular risk factors. The predictable accuracy was presented using receiver performance characteristic curves for HOMA-IR scores in women and men separately. If the HOMA-IR score is higher than 3.45, individuals are significantly more likely to have type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Conclusions: An increase of fasting glucose and more frequent incidence of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases in subjects with IR are associated with the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. There was no significant association between thyroid function and HOMA-IR. HOMA-IR cut-offs could predict the presence of T2DM.

Aims The current study aimed to evaluate the factorial structure of the Lithuanian version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) in patients with anxiety and mood disorders (AMD). Methods The AUDIT was completed by 199 consecutive outpatients with AMD (21% men, mean age 39 ± 12 years), as defined by AMD criteria in DSM-5. The MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview was used for current diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Sociodemographic and clinical data were also collected. Results In patients with AMD, the AUDIT showed high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.88) and good psychometric characteristics for identifying current AUD at a cut-off value of ≥9 (positive predictive value = 83.7%, sensitivity = 94.7%, specificity = 95.7%). The confirmatory factor analysis suggested a three-factor (‘consumption’, ‘dependence’ and ‘related consequences’) structure and indicated adequate fit to the model (comparative fit index = 0.966, normed fit index = 0.936, root mean square error of approximation = 0.072). Conclusions The findings are in line with increasing evidence suggesting that the AUDIT measures three separate factors related to alcohol misuse level of consumption, dependence and alcohol-related consequences and support the utility of AUDIT as a screening instrument for AUD in AMD patients in Lithuania.

Background: Obsessive compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is commonly associated with anxiety and mood disorders (AMDs), in which fatigue and executive dysfunction represent key symptoms. Executive dysfunction has also been demonstrated in subjects with OCPD, and is additionally found to be a cardinal feature of fatigue. This study aimed to investigate the associations between fatigue, executive dysfunction, and OCPD in patients with AMDs. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 85 AMD patients (78% females, mean age 39 ± 11 years) were evaluated for OCPD traits by using the observer-rated Compulsive Personality Assessment Scale. The Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20 was used to measure different aspects of fatigue, and the Trail Making Test was employed to assess executive functioning. The Hamilton rating scales were used to evaluate anxiety and depression symptoms. Results: Controlling for potential confounders, there was a significant link between OCPD and mental fatigue (OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.58; p = 0.033). No associations were found between the presence of OCPD and other relevant fatigue characteristics, including general fatigue, physical fatigue, reduced activity, and reduced motivation, as well as executive functions. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to report associations between OCPD and mental fatigue in patients with AMDs, suggesting mental fatigue as a clinically important symptom when considering particular personality pathologies.

This study aimed to examine the influence of thyroid hormone (TH) levels and genetic polymorphisms of deiodinases on long-term outcomes after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In total, 290 patients who have experienced AMI were evaluated for demographic, clinical characteristics, risk factors, TH and NT-pro-BNP. Polymorphisms of TH related genes were included deiodinase 1 (DIO1) (rs11206244-C/T, rs12095080-A/G, rs2235544-A/C), deiodinase 2 (DIO2) (rs225015-G/A, rs225014-T/C) and deiodinase 3 (DIO3) (rs945006-T/G). Both all-cause and cardiac mortality was considered key outcomes. Cox regression model showed that NT-pro-BNP (HR = 2.11; 95% CI = 1.18– 3.78; p = 0.012), the first quartile of fT3, and DIO1 gene rs12095080 were independent predictors of cardiac-related mortality (HR = 1.74; 95% CI = 1.04–2.91; p = 0.034). The DIO1 gene rs12095080 AG genotype (OR = 3.97; 95% CI = 1.45–10.89; p = 0.005) increased the risk for cardiac mortality. Lower fT3 levels and the DIO1 gene rs12095080 are both associated with cardiac-related mortality after AMI.

PURPOSE Links between psychophysiological reactions to stress stimuli and perceived mental distress, including type D personality, anxiety, and depression, are still under debate. The aim of this study was to examine associations between cardiovascular reactivity to social stress and mental distress in patients after acute coronary syndrome. METHODS Patients (n = 116, 86% males, 52 ± 8 yr) with coronary artery disease 2 wk after acute coronary syndrome were evaluated for sociodemographic, clinical characteristics and coronary artery disease risk factors. The Trier Social Stress Test was employed to measure cardiovascular reactions to social stress (systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate). Mental distress assessment included type D personality (Type D Scale), anxiety and depressive symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and state and trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory). RESULTS Multiple linear regression analysis showed associations between type D personality and lower heart rate during Trier Social Stress Test periods of task instruction (β = -.196, P < .04), preparation time (β = -.232, P < .01), and recovery time (β = -.209, P < .029). Higher trait anxiety was linked with lower heart rate during baseline rest (β = -.287, P < .01), task instruction (β = -.286, P < .01), preparation time (β = -.241, P < .01), and recovery period (β = -.209, P < .05). Depressive symptoms were associated with higher systolic blood pressure during baseline rest (β =.187, P < .05), task instruction (β = .306 P < .01), and free speech (β = .264, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Mental distress was associated with cardiovascular stress reactions independent from possible covariates, suggesting dysregulated psychophysiological reactions to acute stress.

To investigate an association of lithium levels in the drinking water with suicide mortality rates in Lithuania. Methods: Samples from public drinking water systems were taken in all districts of Lithuania. Lithium levels were determined using the ion chromatography method. For the statistical calculations, lithium levels were averaged per district municipality and plotted against suicide standardized mortality rates (SMR) per 100,000 populations, within the 5-year period from 2012 to 2016. Results: We found that lithium concentrations in drinking water were significantly negatively associated with total suicide rates in a nonlinear way. Conclusion: Lithium intake with drinking water may affect suicide rates in some geographical areas.

Objective Knowledge of objective psychophysiological stress parameters and its relationship to health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is limited in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim was to investigate the association of cardiovascular reaction to psychosocial stress with HRQoL in patients with CAD. Methods One-hundred and thirty-six patients (84.6% men, age 52 ± 8) within 2–3 weeks after acute coronary syndromes (ACS) during cardiac rehabilitation were recruited in this cross-sectional study. Patients were evaluated for HRQoL (SF-36 questionnaire), symptoms of anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale) and Type D personality (DS14 scale). Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) was employed to evaluate cardiovascular reactivity (systolic and diastolic blood pressure [BP], and heart rate [HR]) to psychosocial stress. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to test for the associations between cardiovascular reactivity and HRQoL, while controlling for possible confounders. Results After controlling for baseline levels of HR, gender, age, NYHA functional class, AH, Type D personality, symptoms of anxiety and depression, use of beta-blockers, and history of smoking, the SF-36 Social functioning scale (β = −0.182; p = .03) and SF-36 Vitality scale (β = −0.203; p = .03) was associated with prolonged HR recovery following stress evoking tasks. No associations were found between HRQoL and BP measures during the TSST. Conclusion In CAD patients who have experienced ACS, HRQoL was associated with prolonged HR recovery after mental stress, even after controlling for potential confounder. Future studies should investigate the possible role of mediating factors involved in the mechanisms relating cardiovascular stress response and HRQoL.

The association between current beta-1-selective beta-blocker use and cognitive function was evaluated in 722 patients with coronary artery disease without dementia. Beta-1-selective beta-blocker use was associated with worse incidental learning independently of sociodemographic characteristics, clinical coronary artery disease severity, and depression/anxiety.

Background: Fatigue is a common distressing symptom in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI) is used for measuring fatigue in various clinical settings. Nevertheless, its multidimensional structure has not been consistent across studies. Thus, we aimed to psychometrically evaluate the MFI in patients with CAD. Methods: In sum, 1162 CAD patients completed questionnaires assessing their subjective fatigue level (MFI-20), mental distress symptoms (HADS, STAI), and health-related quality of life (SF-36). Participants also completed exercise capacity (EC) testing. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis of the four-factor model, showed acceptable fit (CFI = 0.905, GFI = 0.895, NFI = 0.893, RMSEA = 0.077). After eliminating four items, confirmatory factor analysis testing showed improvement in the four-factor model of the MFI-16 (CFI = 0.910, GFI = 0.909, NFI = 0.898, RMSEA = 0.077). Internal consistency values were adequate for the total score and four MFI-16 subscales: General fatigue, physical fatigue, reduced activity, and mental fatigue with Cronbach&rsquo, s &alpha, range: 0.60&ndash, 0.82. The inadequate value (Cronbach&rsquo, = 0.43) was received for the subscale of reduced motivation in both MFI-20 and MFI-16. Correlations between the MFI-16 and HADS, STAI, SF-36, and EC measures were statistically significant (all p&rsquo, s &lt, 0.001). Conclusions: The Lithuanian version of the modified MFI of 16 items showed good factorial structure and satisfactory psychometric characteristics, except for reduced motivation subscale.

Objective: There has been a lack of research examining associations between biomarkers and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with coronary artery disease and heart failure. In patients with coronary artery disease and heart failure, we aimed to explore potential associations between biomarkers of health such as serum levels of thyroid hormones, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP), inflammatory biomarkers and HRQoL. Methods: In sum, 482 patients (75% male; mean age 58±10 years) with coronary artery disease and heart failure were evaluated for socio-demographic and clinical coronary artery disease risk factors. Blood samples were drawn to evaluate thyroid hormones, NT-pro-BNP, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Additional data was collected on HRQoL (the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire), anxiety and depressive symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), Type D personality (DS14 scale). Results: In multivariable models, lower levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 were associated with worse results on the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire emotional subscale (β = −0.107, p = 0.003; β = −0.106, p = 0.004). Lower levels of interleukin-6 were associated with worse perceived global health (β = −0.101, p = 0.011). Conclusion: Even after controlling for socio-demographic and clinical risk factors including mental distress symptoms, lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers were associated with worse HRQoL.

Aim: To investigate the association among deiodinases (DIO), organic anion-Transporting polypeptide 1C1 (OATP1C1) gene polymorphisms, and thyroid hormones (THs) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods: In summary, 290 patients with AMI were evaluated for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors, and comorbidities, as well as circulating thyroid-stimulating hormone and TH (triiodothyronine [T3], thyroxine [T4], free T3, free T4, and reverse T3) levels. Ten single nucleotide polymorphisms for thyroid axis related genes: DIO1 (rs11206244-C/T, rs12095080-A/G, rs2235544-A/C), DIO2 (rs225014-T/C, rs225015-G/A), DIO3 (rs945006-T/G), and OATP1C1 (rs10444412-T/C, rs10770704-C/T, rs1515777-A/G, rs974453-G/A) were genotyped. Results: Marginal associations were observed between the DIO1, DIO2, and OATP1C1 gene polymorphisms and almost all analyzed THs (p's < 0.05). After controlling for potential confounders, the OATP1C1 rs1515777-A/G minor allele homozygous genotype (G/G) was associated with a decrease in circulating free T3 and free T3/free T4. In the AMI cohort, associations between: DIO1 rs12095080 and hypertension; DIO2 rs225015 and diabetes mellitus; and the OATP1C1 rs974453 genotype, and AMI type were established. Conclusions: DIO1 and DIO2 gene polymorphisms are mainly associated with T3, free T4, free T3/free T4, and [natural-log transformed (ln)] reverse T3 levels, while the OATP1C1 minor allele homozygous genotype is associated with free T3 and free T3/free T4 in CAD patients after AMI.

Objective: N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations can be important biomarkers in the acute stroke setting. In acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients, we investigated the association of NT-proBNP, hsCRP, and IL-6 serum concentrations with stroke severity and functional and cognitive outcomes at discharge. Methods: Seventy-eight patients (53 men; median age 72 years) admitted with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke within 48 h of symptom onset were evaluated for clinical stroke severity (Scandinavian stroke scale; SSS), functional status before the stroke (modified Rankin scale; mRS), and cerebrovascular disease risk factors. Cognitive (Mini Mental State Examination) and functional (mRS) outcomes were evaluated at hospital discharge. Blood samples were drawn for the assessment of NT-proBNP, hsCRP, and IL-6 concentrations within 24 h of admission. Results: Greater NT-proBNP and hsCRP serum concentrations were associated with greater clinical stroke severity, adjusting for the patients' gender, age, stroke type, mRS score on admission, and presence of heart failure (β = -0.292, p = 0.012; β = -0.303, p = 0.009). In multivariate adjusted regression models with IL-6, hsCRP, and NT-proBNP considered together, IL-6 and hsCRP remained associated with worse functional (β = 0.210, p = 0.022) and cognitive (β = -0.269, p = 0.014) outcomes at discharge, respectively. In receiver operating characteristic analyses, the investigated blood biomarkers produced a minimal increase in predictive values for outcomes at discharge above the SSS score, age, and gender. Conclusions: In acute stroke patients, greater NT-proBNP and hsCRP serum concentrations are independently associated with greater clinical stroke severity. Elevated concentrations of IL-6 and hsCRP are associated with worse functional and cognitive outcomes at discharge, respectively.

Suicide is a major public health concern affecting both the society and family life. There are data indicating that higher level lithium intake with drinking water is associated with lower suicide rate. This pilot study examined the relationship between lithium levels in drinking water and suicide rates in Lithuania. Twenty-two samples from public drinking water systems were taken in 9 cities of Lithuania. The lithium concentration in these samples was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The suicide data were obtained from the Lithuania Database of Health Indicators, and comprised all registered suicides across all ages and gender within the 5-year period from 2009 to 2013. The study demonstrated an inverse correlation between levels of lithium (log natural transformed), number of women for 1000 men and standardized mortality rate for suicide among total study population. After adjusting for confounder (the number of women for 1000 men), the lithium level remained statistically significant in men, but not in women. Our study suggested that higher levels of lithium in public drinking water are associated with lower suicide rates in men. It might have a protective effect on the risk of suicide in men.

Objective To determine whether biomarkers of health such as serum levels of free triiodothyronine (fT3), total triiodothyronine (TT3), N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) impact the cognitive functioning of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Method About 278 patients were evaluated for socio-demographic and clinical risk factors as well as fT3, TT3, NT-proBNP, and hsCRP serum levels. Cognitive functioning measures included the Mini-Mental State Examination, Digit Span Test, Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and Trail Making Test A (TMTA). Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Results Lower fT3 concentrations were associated with longer completion time of the DSST and TMTA. Elevated levels of NT-proBNP were also associated with inferior performance on TMTA independently of socio-demographic characteristics, clinical risk factors, and depression symptoms. Conclusions Lower fT3 concentrations and higher levels of NT-proBNP were associated with worse cognitive functioning in CAD patients.

Introduction Prior analysis has demonstrated executive dysfunction as a cardinal feature of fatigue in a post myocardial infarction population [1]. Executive problems have also been demonstrated in a group of subjects with obsessive compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) [2]. Traits of OCPD are commonly associated with depression, which has fatigue as an intrinsic element; however, so far no study has investigated the possibility of a specific association between fatigue and OCPD. Aim To investigate whether measures of fatigue and OCPD were associated, in a sample of patients with anxiety and mood disorders (AMD) demonstrating high levels of fatigue. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study of patients with AMD attending a Stress Disorders Clinic. Socio-demographic and clinical information including diagnosis (as defined by The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview), medication use, body mass index, and history of smoking were collected. The severity of OCPD traits was evaluated using the observer-rated Compulsive Personality Assessment Scale (CPAS) [2]. The Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) was used to assess general, physical and mental fatigue, reduced activity and motivation. The Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) were employed to measure subjective and objective symptoms of depression, while the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) measured anxiety symptoms. Two-tailed Student’s t-test or Fisher’s χ2 test were applied to compare socio-demographic, clinical, fatigue, anxiety and depression characteristics in AMD patients with and without OCPD. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to test associations between OCPD and fatigue, while controlling for possible confounders. Results Sixty-seven patients participated, 49 (73.1 %) females with a mean age of 39±13. In this group, 14 (20.9%) patients had one mood disorder, 17 (25.4%) had one anxiety disorder, and the remaining 36 (53.7%) patients suffered simultaneously from AMD. Nine patients (13.4%) fulfilled operational criteria for OCPD. The OCPD group had higher subjective depression scores on the BDI-II relative to patients without OCPD (35.1±14.1 vs. 23.5±11.1; p = 0.007). However, scores on the HAM-D and HAM-A scales did not show any difference between groups (p’s > 0.05). Measures of physical and mental fatigue were higher among OCPD patients than non-OCPD (respectively, 81.9±22.8 vs. 62.5±25.8, p = 0.037; 88.9±13.5 vs. 65.7±27.6, p = 0.017). Controlling for potential confounders i.e. depression scores (BDI-II), age, gender, medication use and reduced motivation, the association between mental fatigue and OCPD remained significant and was associated with a 1.072-fold increase (95% confidence, 1.002 to 1.147, p = 0.045) in risk for OCPD. There was no longer a significant effect of physical fatigue on OCPD. Conclusions Mental fatigue in patients with AMD is associated with OCPD traits even when depression and reduced motivation symptoms are taken into account. Thus, mental fatigue might represent a previously under-explored marker of OCPD. Further investigation of mental fatigue in diverse groups of patients is needed to confirm this finding.

The objective of the study was analysis of hair trace elements content in children with goiter living in Aktubinsk region. Children with goiter and age- and sex-adjusted controls were involved in the current study. Hair trace elements content was assessed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Thyroid volume was measured using an ultrasound scanner and compared to the previously calculated normal values. The obtained data indicate that children with goiter were characterized by 20 and 15 % lower values of hair Cr and Zn, and 66, 42, 16, and 42 % higher hair levels of I, Mn, Si, and V as compared to the control values, respectively. Moreover, children with goiter were characterized by a twofold higher hair B levels than the control ones. Correlation analysis demonstrated a significant direct association only between thyroid volume and hair B (r = 0.482; p = 0.004), I (r = 0.393; p = 0.021), Mn (r = 0.364; p = 0.034), and Si (r = 0.446; p = 0.008) levels. It is also notable that hair I content was interrelated only with Si (r = 0.346; p = 0.045). No significant correlation was detected between I and B (r = 0.250; p = 0.155) and Mn (r = 0.076; p = 0.669) in hair of children. It is hypothesized that an increase in thyroid volume in children is associated with a complex interplay of iodine with other trace elements rather than with altered iodine status itself.
