Hydrodynamic flow of charge carriers in graphene is an energy flow unlike the usual mass flow in conventional fluids. In neutral graphene, the energy flow is decoupled from the electric current, making it difficult to observe the hydrodynamic effects and measure the viscosity of the electronic fluid by means of electric current measurements. In particular, we show that the hallmark Poiseuille flow in a narrow channel cannot be driven by the electric field irrespective of boundary conditions at the channel edges. Nevertheless one can observe nonuniform current densities similarly to the case of the well-known ballistic-diffusive crossover. The standard diffusive behavior with the uniform current density across the channel is achieved under the assumptions of specular scattering on the channel boundaries. This flow can also be made nonuniform by applying weak magnetic fields. In this case, the curvature of the current density profile is determined by the quasiparticle recombination processes dominated by the disorder-assisted electron-phonon scattering -- the so-called supercollisions., Comment: 12pages, 2 figures

In nearly compensated graphene, disorder-assisted electron-phonon scattering or "supercollisions" are responsible for both quasiparticle recombination and energy relaxation. Within the hydrodynamic approach, these processes contribute weak decay terms to the continuity equations at local equilibrium, i.e., at the level of "ideal" hydrodynamics. Here we report the derivation of the decay term due to weak violation of energy conservation. Such terms have to be considered on equal footing with the well-known recombination terms due to nonconservation of the number of particles in each band. At high enough temperatures in the "hydrodynamic regime" supercollisions dominate both types of the interaction). Collective behavior is one of the most intriguing aspects of the hydrodynamic approach to electronic transport. Here we provide a consistent, unified calculation of the dispersion relations of the hydrodynamic collective modes in graphene. Taking into account viscous effects, we show that the hydrodynamic sound mode in graphene becomes overdamped at sufficiently large momentum scales. In compensated two-component systems in confined, two-dimensional geometries, nonlocal response may appear due to external magnetic field. Within a phenomenological two-fluid framework, we demonstrate the evolution of charge flow profiles and the emergence of a giant nonlocal pattern dominating charge transport in magnetic field. Applying our approach to the specific case of intrinsic graphene, we suggest a simple physical explanation for the experimental observation of giant nonlocality. Experimental investigation of hydrodynamics in electron fluids is a highly topical research area that emerged during the last few years. A recent measurement of the optical conductivity in graphene [P. Gallagher et.al, Science 364, 158 (2019)] offers a possibility of experimental determination of microscopic time scales describing scattering processes in the electronic fluid. In this paper, I report a theoretical calculation of the optical conductivity in graphene at arbitrary doping levels, within the whole "hydrodynamic" temperature range, and for arbitrary, non-quantizing magnetic fields. Viscous phenomena are the hallmark of the hydrodynamic flow exhibited by Dirac fermions in clean graphene at high enough temperatures. We report a quantitative calculation of the electronic shear and Hall viscosities in graphene based on the kinetic theory combined with the renormalization group providing a unified description at arbitrary doping levels and non-quantizing magnetic fields. At charge neutrality, the Hall viscosity vanishes, while the field-dependent shear viscosity decays from its zero-field value saturating to a nonzero value in classically strong fields. In ultra-pure conductors, collective motion of charge carriers at relatively high temperatures may become hydrodynamic such that electronic transport may be described similarly to a viscous flow. In confined geometries (e.g., in ultra-high quality nanostructures), the resulting flow is Poiseuille-like. When subjected to a strong external magnetic field, the electric current in semimetals is pushed out of the bulk of the sample towards the edges. Moreover, we show that the interplay between viscosity and fast recombination leads to the appearance of counterflows. Ultra-pure conductors may exhibit hydrodynamic transport where the collective motion of charge carriers resembles the flow of a viscous fluid. In a confined geometry (e.g., in ultra-high quality nanostructures) the electronic fluid assumes a Poiseuille-like flow. Applying an external magnetic field tends to diminish viscous effects leading to large negative magnetoresistance. In two-component systems near charge neutrality the hydrodynamic flow of charge carriers is strongly affected by the mutual friction between the two constituents. At low fields, the magnetoresistance is negative, however at high fields the interplay between electron-hole scattering, recombination, and viscosity results in a dramatic change of the flow profile: the magnetoresistance changes its sign and eventually becomes linear in very high fields. The last few years have seen an explosion of interest in hydrodynamic effects in interacting electron systems in ultra-pure materials. Two-component conductors -- e.g., semi-metals and narrow band semiconductors -- often exhibit unusually strong magnetoresistance in a wide temperature range. Suppression of the Hall voltage near charge neutrality in such systems gives rise to a strong quasiparticle drift in the direction perpendicular to the electric current and magnetic field. This drift is responsible for a strong geometrical increase of resistance even in weak magnetic fields. Combining the Boltzmann kinetic equation with sample electrostatics, we develop a microscopic theory of magnetotransport in two and three spatial dimensions. The compensated Hall effect in confined geometry is always accompanied by electron-hole recombination near the sample edges and at large-scale inhomogeneities. As the result, classical edge currents may dominate the resistance in the vicinity of charge compensation. The effect leads to linear magnetoresistance in two dimensions in a broad range of parameters. In three dimensions, the magnetoresistance is normally quadratic in the field, with the linear regime restricted to rectangular samples with magnetic field directed perpendicular to the sample surface. A quantum computer based on Majorana qubits would contain a large number of zero-energy Majorana states. This system can be modelled as a connected network of the Ising-Kitaev chains alternating the "trivial" and "topological" regions, with the zero-energy Majorana fermions localized at their interfaces. The low-energy sector of the theory describing such a network can be formulated in terms of leading-order couplings between the Majorana zero modes. I consider a minimal model exhibiting effective couplings between four Majorana zero modes - the nonuniform Ising-Kitaev chain, containing two "topological" regions separated by a "trivial" region. Solving the model exactly, I show that for generic values of the model parameters the four zero modes are localized at the four interface points of the chain. In the special case where additional inversion symmetry is present, the Majorana zero modes are "delocalized" between two interface points. In both cases, the low-energy sector of the theory can be formulated in terms of the localized Majorana fermions, but the couplings between some of them are independent of their respective separations: the exact solution does not support the "nearest-neighbor" form of the effective low-energy Hamiltonian., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We report a nonsaturating linear magnetoresistance in charge-compensated bilayer graphene in a temperature range from 1.5 to 150 K. The observed linear magnetoresistance disappears away from charge neutrality ruling out the traditional explanation of the effect in terms of the classical random resistor network model. We show that experimental results qualitatively agree with a phenomenological two-fluid model taking into account electron-hole recombination and finite-size sample geometry.

We present an effective hydrodynamic theory of electronic transport in graphene in the interaction-dominated regime. We derive the emergent hydrodynamic description from the microscopic Boltzmann kinetic equation taking into account dissipation due to Coulomb interaction and find the viscosity of Dirac fermions in graphene for arbitrary densities. The viscous terms have a dramatic effect on transport coefficients in clean samples at high temperatures. Within linear response, we show that viscosity manifests itself in the nonlocal conductivity as well as dispersion of hydrodynamic plasmons. Coulomb drag is a transport phenomenon whereby long-range Coulomb interaction between charge carriers in two closely spaced but electrically isolated conductors induces a voltage (or, in a closed circuit, a current) in one of the conductors when an electrical current is passed through the other. The magnitude of the effect depends on the exact nature of the charge carriers and microscopic, many-body structure of the electronic systems in the two conductors. The Majorana representation of spin operators allows for efficient field-theoretical description of spin-spin correlation functions. Any N-point spin correlation function is equivalent to a 2N-point correlator of Majorana fermions. For a certain class of N-point spin correlation functions (including "auto" and "pair-wise" correlations) a further simplification is possible, as they can be reduced to N-point Majorana correlators. As a specific example we study the Bose-Kondo model. We develop a path-integral technique and obtain the spin relaxation rate from a saddle point solution of the theory. Furthermore, we show that fluctuations around the saddle point do not affect the correlation functions as long as the latter involve only a single spin projection. We develop a hydrodynamic description of transport properties in graphene-based systems which we derive from the quantum kinetic equation. In the interaction-dominated regime, the collinear scattering singularity in the collision integral leads to fast unidirectional thermalization and allows us to describe the system in terms of three macroscopic currents carrying electric charge, energy, and quasiparticle imbalance. Within this "three-mode" approximation we evaluate transport coeffcients in monolayer graphene as well as in double-layer graphene-based structures. The resulting classical magnetoresistance is strongly sensitive to the interplay between the sample geometry and leading relaxation processes. In small, mesoscopic samples the macroscopic currents are inhomogeneous which leads to linear magnetoresistance in classically strong fields. Applying our theory to double-layer graphene-based systems, we provide microscopic foundation for phenomenological description of giant magnetodrag at charge neutrality and find magnetodrag and Hall drag in doped graphene., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures

Two-component systems with equal concentrations of electrons and holes exhibit non-saturating, linear magnetoresistance in classically strong magnetic fields. The effect is predicted to occur in finite-size samples at charge neutrality in both disorder- and interaction-dominated regimes. The phenomenon originates in the excess quasiparticle density developing near the edges of the sample due to the compensated Hall effect. The size of the boundary region is of the order of the electron-hole recombination length that is inversely proportional to the magnetic field. In narrow samples and at strong enough magnetic fields, the boundary region dominates over the bulk leading to linear magnetoresistance. We report experimental data and theoretical analysis of Coulomb drag between two closely positioned graphene monolayers in weak magnetic field. Close enough to the neutrality point, coexistence of electrons and holes in each layer leads to a dramatic increase of the drag resistivity. Away from charge neutrality, we observe non-zero Hall drag. The observed phenomena are explained by decoupling of electric and quasiparticle currents which are orthogonal at charge neutrality. We study Coulomb drag in double-layer graphene near the Dirac point. A particular emphasis is put on the case of clean graphene, with transport properties dominated by the electron-electron interaction. Using the quantum kinetic equation framework, we show that the drag becomes $T$-independent in the clean limit, $T\tau \to \infty$, where $T$ is temperature and $1/\tau$ impurity scattering rate. For stronger disorder (or lower temperature), $T\tau \ll 1/\alpha^2$, where $\alpha$ is the interaction strength, the kinetic equation agrees with the leading-order ($\alpha^2$) perturbative result. We study the effect of Coulomb drag between two closely positioned graphene monolayers. In the limit of weak electron-electron interaction and small inter-layer spacing ($\mu_{1(2)}, T\ll v/d$) the drag is described by a universal function of the chemical potentials of the layers $\mu_{1(2)}$ measured in the units of temperature $T$. When both layers are tuned close to the Dirac point, then the drag coefficient is proportional to the product of the chemical potentials $\rho_D\propto\mu_1\mu_2$. In the opposite limit of low temperature the drag is inversely proportional to both chemical potentials $\rho_D\propto T^2/(\mu_1\mu_2)$. In the mixed case where the chemical potentials of the two layers belong to the opposite limits $\mu_1\ll T\ll\mu_2$ we find $\rho_D\propto \mu_1/\mu_2$. For stronger interaction and larger values of $d$ the drag coefficient acquires logarithmic corrections and can no longer be described by a power law. Further logarithmic corrections are due to the energy dependence of the impurity scattering time in graphene (for $\mu_{1(2)}\gg T$ these are small and may be neglected). In the case of strongly doped (or gated) graphene $\mu_{1(2)}\gg v/d\gg T$ the drag coefficient acquires additional dependence on the inter-layer spacing and we recover the usual Fermi-liquid result if the screening length is smaller than $d$., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure, extended version

The effect of electron-electron interaction on the low-temperature conductivity of graphene is investigated experimentally. Unlike in other two-dimensional systems, the electron-electron interaction correction in graphene is sensitive to the details of disorder. A new temperature regime of the interaction correction is observed where quantum interference is suppressed by intra-valley scattering. I suggest to use the effect of Coulomb drag between two closely positioned graphite monolayers (graphene sheets) for experimental measurement of the strength of weak non-linearities of the spectrum in graphene. I consider trigonal warping as a representative mechanism responsible for the drag effect. We have observed reproducible fluctuations of the Coulomb drag, both as a function of magnetic field and electron concentration, which are a manifestation of quantum interference of electrons in the layers. At low temperatures the fluctuations exceed the average drag, giving rise to random changes of the sign of the drag. We study the temperature dependence of the conductivity due to quantum interference processes for a two-dimensional disordered itinerant electron system close to a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. Near the quantum critical point, the cross-over between diffusive and ballistic regimes of quantum interference effects occurs at a temperature $ T^{\ast}=1/\tau \gamma (E_{F}\tau)^{2}$, where $\gamma $ is the parameter associated with the Landau damping of the spin fluctuations, $\tau $ is the impurity scattering time, and $E_{F}$ is the Fermi energy. For a generic choice of parameters, $T^{\ast}$ is smaller than the nominal crossover scale $1/\tau $. The system of interacting spinless fermions hopping on a two-leg ladder in the presence of an external magnetic field is shown to possess a long range order: the bond density wave or the staggered flux phase. We study numerically the evolution of energy-level statistics as an integrability-breaking term is added to the XXZ Hamiltonian. For finite-length chains, physical properties exhibit a cross-over from behavior resulting from the Poisson level statistics characteristic of integrable models to behavior corresponding to the Wigner-Dyson statistics characteristic of the random-matrix theory used to describe chaotic systems. Different measures of the level statistics are observed to follow different crossover patterns. The range of numerically accessible system sizes is too small to establish with certainty the scaling with system size, but the evidence suggests that in a thermodynamically large system an infinitesimal integrability breaking would lead to Wigner-Dyson behavior., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, Revtex4

We establish the consistency of the Fermi liquid description and find a relation between Fermi liquid constants for the two dimensional electron system near the point of full polarization due to a parallel magnetic field $H$. Our results enable us to predict connections between different thermodynamic properties of the system. In particular, we find that near the point of full polarization $H_c$, the thermodynamic compressibility of the system experiences a jump with the subleading $(H_c-H)^{1/2}$ dependence on the magnetic field. Also, the magnetization has a cusp with the dependence of the type $(H-H_c) + (H_c-H)^{3/2}$ at $H

For densities above $n=1.6 \times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the strongly interacting system of electrons in two-dimensional silicon inversion layers, excellent agreement between experiment and the theory of Zala, Narozhny and Aleiner is obtained for the response of the conductivity to a magnetic field applied parallel to the plane of the electrons. However, the Fermi liquid parameter $F_0^\sigma(n)$ and the valley splitting $\Delta_V(n)$ obtained from fits to the magnetoconductivity, although providing qualitatively correct behavior (including sign), do not yield quantitative agreement with the temperature dependence of the conductivity in zero magnetic field. Our results suggest the existence of additional scattering processes not included in the theory in its present form.

We calculate the temperature dependence of the weak localization correction in a two dimensional system at arbitrary relation between temperature, $T$ and the elastic mean free time. We describe the crossover in the dephasing time ${\tau_\phi(T)}$ between the high temperature, $1/\tau_\phi \simeq T^2 \ln T$, and the low temperature $1/\tau_\phi \simeq T$ behaviors. We consider the correction to conductivity of a 2D electron gas due to electron-electron interaction in the parallel magnetic field at arbitrary relation between temperature and the elastic mean free time. We investigate the effect of electron-electron interaction on the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient of 2D electron gas at arbitrary relation between the temperature $T$ and the elastic mean-free time $\tau$. At small temperature $T\tau \ll \hbar$ we reproduce the known relation between the logarithmic temperature dependences of the Hall coefficient and of the longitudinal conductivity. It is well known that electron-electron interaction in disordered systems leads to logarithmically divergent Altshuler-Aronov corrections to conductivity at low temperatures ($T\tau\ll 1$; $\tau$ is the elastic mean-free time). This paper is devoted to the fate of such corrections at intermediate temperatures $T\tau\ge 1$. We show that in this (ballistic) regime the temperature dependence of conductivity is still governed by the same physical processes as the Altshuler-Aronov correction - scattering by Friedel oscillations. However, in this regime the correction is linear in temperature; the value and even the {\em sign} of the slope depends on the strength of electron-electron interaction. We show that the slope is directly related to the renormalization of the spin susceptibility and grows as the system approaches the ferromagnetic Stoner instability. Also, we obtain the temperature dependence of the conductivity in the cross-over region between the diffusive and the ballistic regimes. We consider mesoscopic fluctuations of Coulomb drag transresistivity between two layers at a Landau level filling factor $\nu=1/2$ each. We find that at low temperature sample to sample fluctuations exceed both the ensemble average and the corresponding fluctuations at B=0. At the experimentally relevant temperatures, the variance of the transresistivity is proportional to $T^{-1/2}$. We consider the effect of potential disorder on magnetic properties of a two-dimensional metallic system (with conductance $g\gg 1$) when interaction in the triplet channel is so strong that the system is close to the threshold of the Stoner instability. We show, that under these conditions there is an exponentially small probability for the system to form local spin droplets which are local regions with non zero spin density. Using a non-local version of the optimal fluctuation method we find analytically the probability distribution and the typical spin of a local spin droplet (LSD). In particular, we show that both the probability to form a LSD and its typical spin are independent of the size of the droplet (within the exponential accuracy). The LSDs manifest themselves in temperature dependence of observable quantities. We show, that below certain cross-over temperature the paramagnetic susceptibility acquires the Curie-like temperature dependence, while the dephasing time (extracted from magneto-resistance measurements) saturates., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

We show that in ultra-small superconducting grains any concentration of magnetic impurities or infinitely small orbital effect of magnetic field leads to destruction of the hard gap in the tunneling density of states. We consider mesoscopic fluctuations of the Coulomb drag coefficient $\rho_D$ in the system of two separated two-dimensional electron gases. It is shown that at low temperatures sample to sample fluctuations of $\rho_D$ exceed its ensemble average. We consider a diffusive S-N-S junction with electrons in the normal layer driven out of equilibrium by external bias. We show that, the non-equilibrium fluctuations of the electron density in the normal layer cause the fluctuations of the phase of the order parameter in the S-layers. As a result, the magnitude of the Josephson current in the non-equilibrium junction is significantly supressed relative to its mean field value., Comment: 4 pages, 1 .eps figure; References added

We consider a normal metal - superconductor (N-S) junction in the regime, when electrons in the normal metal are driven out of equilibrium. We show that the non-equilibrium fluctuations of the electron density in the N-layer cause the fluctuations of the phase of the order parameter in the S-layer. As a result, the density of states in the superconductor deviates from the BCS form, most notably the density of states in the gap becomes finite. This effect can be viewed as a result of the time reversal symmetry breaking due to the non-equilibrium, and can be described in terms of a low energy collective mode of the junction, which couples normal currents in N-layer and supercurrents. This mode is analogous to the Schmid-Sch\"{o}n mode. To interpret their measurements of the tunneling current, Pothier {\em et. al} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 79}, 3490 (1997)] had to assume that the energy relaxation rate in the normal metal is surprisingly high. The broadening of the BCS singularity of the density of states in the S-layer manifest itself similarly to the broadening of the distribution function. We study motion of vortices in arrays of Josephson junctions at zero temperature where it is controlled by quantum tunneling from one plaquette to another. The tunneling process is characterized by a finite time and can be slow compared to the superconducting gap (so that $\tau \Delta >> 1$). The dissipation which accompanies this process arises from rare processes when a vortex excites a quasiparticle above the gap while tunneling through a single junction. We find that the dissipation is significant even in the case $\tau \Delta >> 1$, in particular it is not exponentially small in this parameter. We present evidence suggesting that spin transport in the gapless phase of the S=1/2 XXZ model is ballistic rather than diffusive. We map the model onto a spinless fermion model whose charge stiffness determines the spin transport of the original model. By means of exact numerical diagonalisation and finite size scaling we study both the stiffness and the level statistics. We show that the stiffness is non-zero at low temperatures so that the transport is ballistic. Our results suggest that the non-zero stiffness is due to the fact that even in the presence of Umklapp scattering a non-zero fraction of states remain degenerate in the thermodynamic limit., Comment: 4 pages, LaTeX, 5 figures, thoroughly revised
