Abstract

High entropy alloys present many promising properties, such as high hardness or thermal stability, and can be candidates for many applications. Powder metallurgy techniques enable the production of bulk alloys with fine microstructures. This study aimed to investigate powder metallurgy preparation, i.e., mechanical alloying and sintering, non-equiatomic high entropy alloy from the Al-Cr-Fe-Mn-Mo system. The structural and microstructural investigations were performed on powders and the bulk sample. The indentation was carried out on the bulk sample. The mechanically alloyed powder consists of two bcc phases, one of which is significantly predominant. The annealed powder and the sample sintered at 950 °C for 1 h consist of a predominantly bcc phase (71 ± 2 vol.%), an intermetallic χ phase (26 ± 2 vol.%), and a small volume fraction of multielement carbides—M6C and M23C6. The presence of carbides results from carbon contamination from the balls and vial during mechanical alloying and the graphite die during sintering. The density of the sintered sample is 6.71 g/cm3 (98.4% relative density). The alloy presents a very high hardness of 948 ± 34 HV1N and Young’s modulus of 245 ± 8 GPa. This study showed the possibility of preparing ultra-hard multicomponent material reinforced by the intermetallic χ phase. The research on this system presented new knowledge on phase formation in multicomponent systems. Moreover, strengthening the solid solution matrix via hard intermetallic phases could be interesting for many industrial applications.

Abstract

International audience; In order to understand the history of our Universe we attempt to trace different stages of evolution of different types of galaxies as a function of time. While we can easily detect and analyze sources at low redshift, at high redshift we face strong barriers due to the resolution and detection limits. Now, we finally have an opportunity to see those objects due to the technical progress of astronomical instruments. Recently, astronomers found a new population of compact and massive galaxies - ''red nuggets''. These specific objects are believed to evolve undisturbed from early cosmic epochs and represent a unique laboratory to study how the first massive galaxies formed and evolved. Here, we present the process of searching for the red nuggets in the sample of ∼90 k galaxies in VIPERS, a spectroscopic survey at redshift 0.5 < z

Abstract

We present a description of the GBAR positron (e+) trapping apparatus, which consists of a three stage Buffer Gas Trap (BGT) followed by a High Field Penning Trap (HFT), and discuss its performance. The overall goal of the GBAR experiment is to measure the acceleration of the neutral antihydrogen (H¯) atom in the terrestrial gravitational field by neutralising a positive antihydrogen ion (H¯+), which has been cooled to a low temperature, and observing the subsequent H¯ annihilation following free fall. To produce one H¯+ ion, about 1010 positrons, efficiently converted into positronium (Ps), together with about 107 antiprotons (p¯), are required. The positrons, produced from an electron linac-based system, are accumulated first in the BGT whereafter they are stacked in the ultra-high vacuum HFT, where we have been able to trap 1.4(2) × 109 positrons in 1100 s. Abstract

International audience; The Coulomb excitation of Ru102 was performed with beams of C12 and O16 ions. The beam particles scattered at forward angles were momentum analyzed with a magnetic spectrograph. The resolution achieved enabled the populations of the 21+ state, the unresolved 22+/41+, and 24+/31−, doublets of states, and the 32− state to be determined as a function of the scattering angle. These populations are compared with gosia calculations, yielding B(E2;21+→01+)=41.5±2.3 W.u., B(E2;22+→01+)=1.75±0.11 W.u., B(E3;31−→01+)=31.5±3.5 W.u., and B(E3;32−→01+)=6.8±0.5 W.u. The B(E3;31−→01+) value is significantly larger than previously measured. The weakly populated 23+ state, presumed to be a member of the band built on the 02+ state, was observed clearly for a single angle only, and a fit to its population results in B(E2;23+→01+)=0.053±0.011 W.u. Using the known γ-ray branching ratios for the 23+ level, the B(E2;23+→02+) value is calculated to be 18±4 W.u., substantially less than the B(E2;21+→01+). This suggests that the deformation of the 02+ state is lower than that of the 01+ state. The results are compared with beyond-mean-field calculations with the Gogny-D1S interaction using the symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing method.

Abstract

The M4F project brings together the fusion and fission materials communities working on the prediction of radiation damage production and evolution and their effects on the mechanical behaviour of irradiated ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steels. It is a multidisciplinary project in which several different experimental and computational materials science tools are integrated to understand and model the complex phenomena associated with the formation and evolution of irradiation induced defects and their effects on the macroscopic behaviour of the target materials. In particular the project focuses on two specific aspects: (1) To develop physical understanding and predictive models of the origin and consequences of localised deformation under irradiation in F/M steels; (2) To develop good practices and possibly advance towards the definition of protocols for the use of ion irradiation as a tool to evaluate radiation effects on materials. Nineteen modelling codes across different scales are being used and developed and an experimental validation programme based on the examination of materials irradiated with neutrons and ions is being carried out. The project enters now its 4th year and is close to delivering high-quality results. Abstract

Aims. We study how the upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory can be employed to constrain the physical properties of normal star-forming galaxies (main-sequence galaxies). Because the majority of the observed LSST objects will have no auxiliary data, we use simulated LSST data and existing real observations to test the reliability of estimates of the physical properties of galaxies, such as their star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass (Mstar), and dust luminosity (Ldust). We focus on normal star-forming galaxies because they form the majority of the galaxy population in the universe and are therefore more likely to be observed with the LSST. Methods. We performed a simulation of LSST observations and uncertainties of 50 385 real galaxies within the redshift range 0 z Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP) survey. Our analysis focused on two fields, ELAIS N1 and COSMOS. To obtain the physical properties of the galaxies, we fit their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using the Code Investigating GALaxy Emission. We simulated the LSST data by convolving the SEDs fitted by employing the multi-wavelength observations. We compared the main galaxy physical properties, such as SFR, Mstar, and Ldust obtained from the fit of the observed multi-wavelength photometry of galaxies (from the UV to the far-IR) to those obtained from the simulated LSST optical measurements alone. Results. We present the catalogue of simulated LSST observations for 23 291 main-sequence galaxies in the ELAIS N1 field and for 9093 galaxies in the COSMOS field. It is available in the HELP virtual observatory. The stellar masses estimated based on the LSST measurements agree with the full UV to far-IR SED estimates because they mainly depend on the UV and optical emission, which is well covered by LSST in the considered redshift range. Instead, we obtain a clear overestimate of the dust-related properties (SFR, Ldust, Mstar) estimated with the LSST alone. They are highly correlated with redshift. We investigate the cause of this overestimate and conclude that it is related to an overestimate of the dust attenuation in both UV and near-IR. We find that it is necessary to employ auxiliary rest-frame mid-IR observations, simulated UV observations, or the far-UV attenuation (AFUV)-Mstar relation to correct for the overestimate. We also deliver the correction formula log10(SFRLSST/SFRreal) = 0.26 ⋅ z2 − 0.94 ⋅ z + 0.87. It is based on the 32 384 MS galaxies detected with Herschel.

International audience; The GBAR experiment aims to measure the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen H̅. It will use H̅+ ions formed by the interaction of antiprotons with a dense positronium cloud, which will require about 1010 positrons to produce one H̅+. We present the first results on the positron accumulation, reaching 3.8±0.4×108 e+ collected in 560 s.

Abstract

Neutron inspection of sea-going cargo containers has been widely studied in the past 20 yr to non-intrusively detect terrorist threats, like explosives or Special Nuclear Materials (SNM), and illicit goods, like narcotics or smuggling materials. Fast 14 MeV neutrons are produced by a portable generator with the t(d, n)α fusion reaction, and tagged in both direction and time thanks to the alpha particle detection. This Associated Particle Technique (APT) allows focusing inspection on specific areas of interest in the containers, previously identified as containing suspicious items with X-ray radiographic scanners or radiation portal monitors. We describe the principle of APT for non-nuclear material identification, and for nuclear material detection, then we provide illustrations of the performances for 10 min inspections with significant quantities (kilograms) of explosives, illicit drugs, or SNM, in different cargo cover loads (e.g. metallic, organic, or ceramic matrices).

Abstract

International audience; The GBAR (Gravitational Behavior of Antihydrogen at Rest) experiment at CERN requires efficient deceleration of 100 keV antiprotons provided by the new ELENA synchrotron ring to synthesize antihydrogen. This is accomplished using electrostatic deceleration optics and a drift tube that is designed to switch from -99 kV to ground when the antiproton bunch is inside – essentially a charged particle “elevator” – producing a 1 keV pulse. We describe the simulation, design, construction and successful testing of the decelerator device at -92 kV on-line with antiprotons from ELENA.

Abstract

The neutron powder diffraction technique has been used for structural studies of Rb2UBr6 solid electrolyte as a function of temperature. The low-, room-, and high-temperature structures have been determined. At the temperature range of 4.2–80 K, the compound crystallizes in a monoclinic unit cell in the P21/c space group. At 80 K and 853 K, the compound crystallizes in a tetragonal unit cell in the P4/mnc space group. At 300 K, the lattice constants are a = b = 7.745(1) and c = 11.064(1) Å. At the temperature range of 853–960 K, a trigonal phase is observed in the Pʒ̄ml space group.

Abstract

Context: Ultraviolet radiation (UV) influences the physics and chemistry of star-forming regions, but its properties and significance in the immediate surroundings of low-mass protostars are still poorly understood. Aims: We aim to extend the use of the CN/HCN ratio, already established for high-mass protostars, to the low-mass regime to trace and characterize the UV field around low-mass protostars on $\sim 0.6\times0.6$ pc scales. Methods: We present $5'\times5'$ maps of the Serpens Main Cloud encompassing 10 protostars observed with the EMIR receiver at the IRAM 30 m telescope in CN 1-0, HCN 1-0, CS 3-2, and some of their isotopologues. The radiative-transfer code RADEX and the chemical model Nahoon are used to determine column densities of molecules, gas temperature and density, and the UV field strength, $G_\mathrm{0}$. Results: The spatial distribution of HCN and CS are well-correlated with CO 6-5 emission that traces outflows. The CN emission is extended from the central protostars to their immediate surroundings also tracing outflows, likely as a product of HCN photodissociation. The ratio of CN to HCN total column densities ranges from $\sim$1 to 12 corresponding to G$_0$ $\approx$ $10^{1}-10^{3}$ for gas densities and temperatures typical for outflows of low-mass protostars. Conclusions: UV radiation associated with protostars and their outflows is indirectly identified in a significant part of the Serpens Main low-mass star-forming region. Its strength is consistent with the values obtained from the OH and H$_2$O ratios observed with Herschel and compared with models of UV-illuminated shocks. Abstract

In this study displacement of monoclinic bands of zirconia were investigated in the function of oxidation time using the Raman spectroscopy technique. Oxidations were performed on pure zirconium and zirconium alloy in-situ at 600 °C for 6 h. Analysis of the absolute intensities as well as the positions of the characteristic for monoclinic and tetragonal phase Raman bands were performed. Reported results has highlighted that monoclinic phase of zirconia undergoes a continuous band displacement, individual for each Raman mode. Recorded shift of low frequency vibrational spectra of monoclinic phase was employed to study stress developed in zirconia during high temperature oxidation – herein called as growing stress. In addition, based on the Raman band intensity we discuss observed transition of the metastable tetragonal phase to stable monoclinic phase. Reported results, for the first time showed that studied metals (pure zirconium and its alloy) behave similarly in terms of band shift. However the resulting value of growing stress associated to the band displacement is slightly different in regards of individual band and studied sample. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

International audience; Feedback from high-mass stars (stellar winds, radiation and photoionization pressure, supernova explosions) can strongly modify the surrounding cloud. As a result, the next generation of stars is affected and can present different physical properties. Using ALMA interferometric observations, we characterized the fragmentation occurring inside the massive cores previously detected with Herschel and being good candidates for high-mass star formation. Most of the fragments have a mass higher than predicted by the thermal Jeans mechanism, thus requiring external turbulence to explain it, and some of the fragments have a mass higher than 8 M which make them interesting targets for further studies. One of the fragment shows different molecular emissions tracing hot core, disk and outflows and is the most promising site for the search of high-mass stars toward RCW 120.

Abstract

Star-forming regions are usually studied in the context of Galactic surveys, but dedicated observations are sometimes needed when the study reaches beyond the survey area. Here, we studied the G345.5+1.5 region, which is located slightly above the Galactic plane, to understand its star formation properties. We combined the LABOCA and $^{12}$CO(4$-$3) transition line observations complemented with the Hi-GAL and $\it{Spitzer}$-GLIMPSE surveys to study the star formation toward this region. We used the Clumpfind algorithm to extract the clumps from the 870$\mu$m and $^{12}$CO(4$-$3) data. Radio emission at 36cm was used to estimate the number of HII regions and to remove the contamination from the free-free emission at 870$\mu$m. We employed color-color diagrams and spectral energy distribution slopes to distinguish between prestellar and protostellar clumps. We studied the boundedness of the clumps through the virial parameter. Finally, we estimated the star formation efficiency and star formation rate of the region and used the Schmidt-Kennicutt diagram to compare its ability to form stars. Of the 13 radio sources that we found using the MGPS-2 catalog, 7 are found to be associated with HII regions corresponding to late-B or early-O stars. We found 45 870$\mu$m clumps, and 107 $^{12}$CO clumps. More than 50\% of the clumps are protostellar and bounded and are able to host star formation. High SFR and SFR density values are associated with the region, with an SFE of a few percent. With submillimeter, CO transition, and short-wavelength infrared observations, our study reveals a population of massive stars, protostellar and bound starless clumps, toward G345.5+1.5. This region is therefore actively forming stars, and its location in the starburst quadrant of the Schmidt-Kennicutt diagram is comparable to other star-forming regions found within the Galactic plane., Comment: 20 pages - 15 figures

The budget of momentum and energy of feedback can change the properties of the new generation of stars which is forming in the molecular cloud. \\\\We studied the galactic H II region RCW\raisebox-0.5ex~120 both in the far-infrared using the HERSCHEL space telescope and at millimetre wavelength using the ALMA interferometer. Almost all of the massive cores are found in the most massive clump and are fragmented differently. ALMA observations allowed us to characterize this fragmentation in order to see if these massive cores can give rise to high-mass stars. Most of the fragments have mass higher than the thermal Jeans mass, which can be explained by adding turbulence. A few fragments have a mass higher than 8\raisebox-0.5ex~M_ødot and could potentially be future sites of high-mass star formation. Molecular emissions in the most massive fragment of the most massive core indicate that the protostar is in the hot core phase.

Abstract

International audience; The main purpose of this paper is to summarize our results obtained during research on the radiation behavior of oxides. The paper presents various methods of damage accumulation in irradiated oxides with the special emphasis on correlations between channeling, luminescence and Raman spectroscopy measurements as well as the possibility to obtain quantitative data on polycrystalline materials. The results are interpreted in terms of Multi Step Damage Accumulation model. Without pretending to give a full review of the current trends concerning these studies, we intend to present both a reflection about recent results and a few options for next investigations. This article can thus be regarded as the opening of a discussion on further directions of the research to be conducted on the topic of radiation damage formation in advanced materials for nuclear applications.

Abstract

The European H2020 project entitled “effective container inspection at border control point” (C-BORD) focuses on the development and in-situ tests of a comprehensive, cost-effective solution for the generalized non-intrusive inspection (NII) of containers and large-volume freight at the European Union border. The opening procedures of suspect containers are time consuming and expensive for economical and safety reasons; therefore, to reduce such operations, the C-BORD project aims to develop a set of technologies that can improve the quality of NII. Among these techniques, a tagged neutron inspection system is being developed in the C-BORD project. It will be a second-line defense system, to be used on sealed containers to detect explosives, illicit drugs, and chemical agents in suspect voxels (elementary volume units). This method employs a beam of tagged neutrons and a set of NaI(Tl) and LaBr[Formula: see text](Ce) scintillators, which will be used to detect prompt gamma rays produced by the neutron interactions. Here we report the advances on the development of the C-BORD’s rapidly relocatable tagged neutron inspection system, in particular the comprehensive characterization of the NaI(Tl) and LaBr[Formula: see text](Ce) gamma detectors (time and energy resolutions, high-count-rate behavior), the digital analysis for time-coincidence measurements and the data acquisition system (DAQ).

Abstract

In this paper we present the prompt photofission neutron detection performance of undoped CaF2 scintillator using Threshold Activation Detection (TAD). The study is carried out in the frame of C-BORD Horizon 2020 project, during which an efficient toolbox for high volume freight non-intrusive inspection (NII) is under development. Technologies for radiation monitoring are the part of the project. Particularly, detection of various radiological threats on country borders plays an important significant role in Homeland Security applications. Detection of illegal transfer of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) - 235U, 233U and 239Pu - is particular due to the potential use for production of nuclear weapon as well as radiological dispersal device (RDD) V known also as a “dirty bomb”. This technique relies on activation of 19F nuclei in the scintillator medium by fast neutrons and registration of high-energy β particles and γ-rays from the decay of reaction products. The radiation from SNM is detected after irradiation in order to avoid detector blinding. Despite the low 19F(n,α)16N or 19F(n,p)19O reaction cross-section, the method could be a good solution for detection of shielded nuclear material. Results obtained with the CaF2 detector were compared with the previous study done for BaF2 and 3He detector. These experimental results were obtained using 252Cf source and 9 MeV Varian Linatron M9 linear accelerator (LINAC). Finally, performance of the prompt neutron detection system based on CaF2 will be validated at Rotterdam Seaport during field trails in 2018.

Abstract

International audience; In the frame of the C-BORD project, five innovate technology pillars for Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) are under development. Freight containers are potential means for smuggling, drug trafficking and transport of dangerous or illicit substances. The goal of the C-BORD project is to increase interdiction of illicit or dangerous materials in containerized freight and deliver new capabilities against critical operational requirements and constrains. Particularly, the aim of the project is to increase throughput of the container per time unit, reduce cost and time of cargo inspection and minimize the false negative and false positive alarm ratios. Finally, thanks to field trials organized during the project, capability of these systems will be proven and the C-BORD Toolbox usefulness will be validated by end users under real conditions at sea and border crosses.

We report on the status of the RRTNIS system, in particular the overall design, the characterization of the large-volume NaI(Tl) gamma detectors, the digital analysis of the time measurements and the Data Acquisition System (DAQ).

Abstract

International audience; The properties of the K-isomer decays in the 134 Nd and 184 Pt nuclei have been investigated. Measurements were carried out in e-γ and γ-γ coincidence modes using electron spectrometers coupled to the central European Array for Gamma Levels Evaluations at the Heavy Ion Laboratory of the University of Warsaw. Internal conversion coefficients were obtained for transitions relevant to the decay of the isomeric states, allowing the determination of multipolarities and mixing ratios as well as hindrance factors. Two possible causes of the weakening of the K forbiddenness, namely rotational K mixing (Coriolis interaction) and triaxiality, are briefly discussed using schematic theoretical models.

Abstract

Neutron and gamma flux levels are key parameters in nuclear research reactors. In Material Testing Reactors, such as the future Jules Horowitz Reactor, under construction at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA Cadarache, France), the expected gamma flux levels are very high (nuclear heating is of the order of 20 W/g at 100 MWth). As gamma rays deposit their energy in the reactor structures and structural materials it is important to take them into account when designing irradiation devices. There are only a few sensors which allow measurements of the nuclear heating [12]; a recent development at the CEA Cadarache allows measurements of the gamma flux using a miniature ionization chamber (MIC) [3]. The measured MIC response is often compared with calculation using modern Monte Carlo (MC) neutron and photon transport codes, such as TRIPOLI-4 and MCNP6. In these calculations only the production of prompt gamma rays in the reactor is usually modelled thus neglecting the delayed gamma rays. Hence calculations and measurements are usually in better accordance for the neutron flux than for the gamma flux. In this paper we study the contribution of delayed gamma rays to the total MIC signal in order to estimate the systematic error in gamma flux MC calculations. In order to experimentally determine the delayed gamma flux contributions to the MIC response, we performed gamma flux measurements with CEA developed MIC at three different research reactors: the OSIRIS reactor (MTR — 70 MWth at CEA Saclay, France), the TRIGA MARK II reactor (TRIGA — 250 kWth at the Jozef Stefan Institute, Slovenia) and the MARIA reactor (MTR — 30 MWth at the National Center for Nuclear Research, Poland). In order to experimentally assess the delayed gamma flux contribution to the total gamma flux, several reactor shut down (scram) experiments were performed specifically for the purpose of the measurements. Results show that on average about 30 % of the MIC signal is due to the delayed gamma rays. In this paper we describe experiments in each of the three reactors and how we estimate delayed gamma rays with MIC measurements. The results and perspectives are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Within the framework of the European H2020 C-BORD project, aiming at improving container inspection technologies, a compact and "Rapidly Relocatable Tagged Neutron Inspection System", called RRTNIS, is being developed taking into account past EURITRACK experience with a portal TNIS, and the latest technologies in terms of associated particle neutron generator and data acquisition electronics. A dedicated shield surrounding the neutron generator has been designed with MCNP6 to limit the size of the restricted area and the count rate on gamma detectors, which are located very close to the generator. This new design with "reflection" detectors only, i.e. in backscattering position, is indeed more efficient to detect suspect items, like explosives or illicit drugs, in bottom regions of the container, compared to EURITRACK detectors which were mainly located above the container. It also allows designing a relocatable system for different inspection sites like seaports, borders, or other checkpoints. Dose and count rate calculations are presented to determine the restricted area and facilitate the design of the data acquisition electronics, respectively.

Abstract

Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an electronic personal dosimeter 'D-shuttle' for two weeks, and kept a journal of his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of estimated annual doses due to the terrestrial background radiation level of other regions/countries. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

International audience; A comparative study of damage accumulation in magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) has been conducted using ionoluminescence (IL), cathodoluminescence (CL) and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry/channeling (RBS/C) techniques. MgAl2O4 single crystal and polycrystalline samples were irradiated with 320 keV Ar+ ions at fluencies ranging from 1 × 1012 to 2 × 1016 cm−2 in order to create various levels of radiation damage. RBS/C measurements provided quantitative data about damage concentration in the samples. These values were then compared to the luminescence measurements. The results obtained by IL and RBS/C methods demonstrate a two-step character of damage buildup process. The CL data analysis points to the three-step damage accumulation mechanism involving the first defect transformation at fluencies of about 1013 cm−2 and second at about 1015 cm−2. The rate of changes resulting from the formation of nonluminescent recombination centers is clearly nonlinear and cannot be described in terms of continuous accumulation of point defects. Both, IL and CL techniques, appear as new, complementary tools bringing new possibilities in the damage accumulation studies in single- and polycrystalline materials.

Abstract

The paper is devoted to modeling residual stresses and strains in an oxide film formed during high temperature oxidation. It describes the deflection test in isothermal high-temperature monofacial oxidation (DTMO) of pure zirconium. The model incorporates kinetics and mechanism of oxidation and takes into account elastic, viscoplastic, growth and chemical strains. Different growth strains models are considered, namely, isotropic growth strains given by Pilling–Bedworth ratio, anisotropic growth strains defined by Parise and co-authors and physically based model for growth strain proposed by Clarke. Creep mechanisms based on dislocation slip and core diffusion, are used. A mechanism responsible for through thickness normal stress gradient in the oxide film is proposed. The material parameters are identified using deflection tests under 400 °C, 500 °C and 600 °C. The effect of temperature on creep and stress relaxation is analyzed. Numerical sensitivity study of the DTMO experiment is proposed in order to investigate the effects of the initial foil thickness and platinum coating on the deflection curves.

Abstract

International audience; One of the outputs of the European Metrology Research Programme project "Ionising radiation metrology for the metallurgical industry" (MetroMetal) was a recommendation on a novel radionuclide specific detector system optimised for the measurement of radioactivity in metallurgical samples. The detection efficiency of the recommended system for the standards of cast steel, slag and fume dust developed within the project was characterized by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations performed using different MC codes. Capabilities of MC codes were also tested for simulation of true coincidence summing (TCS) effects for several radionuclides of interest in the metallurgical industry. The TCS correction factors reached up to 32% showing that the TCS effects are of high importance in close measurement geometries met in routine analyses of metallurgical samples.

Abstract

New measurements have been undertaken to determine the half-life of 151Sm. A pure 151Sm solution was obtained after chemical separation from a samarium solution resulting from the dissolution of an irradiated samarium sample. The concentration of 151Sm in the solution was measured by mass spectrometry, combined with the isotope dilution technique. The activity of the solution was measured by liquid scintillation counting by six European laboratories as part of an international comparison. These combined results lead to a half-life of T 1/2 = 94.6(6) a.

Abstract

Exprérience GANIL/LISE/MAYA; International audience; Isoscalar giant resonances have been measured in the unstable Ni68 nucleus using inelastic alpha and deuteron scattering at 50A MeV in inverse kinematics with the active target MAYA at GANIL. Using alpha scattering, the extracted isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) centroid was determined to be 21.1±1.9 MeV and the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance (ISGQR) to be 15.9±1.3 MeV. Indications for soft isoscalar monopole and dipole modes are provided. Results obtained with both (α,α′) and (d,d′) probes are compatible. The evolution of isoscalar giant resonances along the Ni isotopic chain from Ni56 to Ni68 is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; In the perspective of irradiation experiments in the future Jules Horowitz Reactor (JHR), the Instrumentation Sensors and Dosimetry Laboratory of CEA Cadarache (France) is developing a numerical tool for SPND design, simulation and operation. In the frame of the SPND numerical tool qualification, dedicated experiments have been performed both in the Slovenian TRIGA Mark II reactor (JSI) and very recently in the French CEA Saclay OSIRIS reactor, as well as a test of two detectors in the core of the Polish MARIA reactor (NCBJ). A full description of experimental set-ups and neutron-gamma calculations schemes are provided in the first part of the paper. Calculation to experiment comparison of the various SPNDs in the different reactors is thoroughly described and discussed in the second part. Presented comparisons show promising final results.

Abstract

The fast neutron nuclear reactions, such as 19 F(n, α) 16 N and 19 F(n, p) 19 O, can be used to detect highly energetic neutrons due to their energy thresholds above which these activation reactions can occur. This was recently shown (Gozani et al., 2011 [2] ) as a means to detect concealed nuclear materials via the detection of the high energy (≈3 MeV) prompt neutrons emitted during the photofission process. Fluorine-loaded scintillation detectors, such as inorganic BaF 2 and CaF 2 , and non-hydrogenous fluorocarbon (FC) liquid scintillators, such as Saint-Gobain BC-509 and Eljen Technology EJ-313, are possible candidates. The latter was selected and implemented in the above mentioned reference. In our paper, we propose a new pentafluorostyrene-based plastic scintillator (F-plastic) which can be a good alternative to the abovementioned scintillators. The fluorine content of F-plastic is equal to 3.73×10 22 atoms/cm 3 , and the F / H ratio is 1.66. The fluorescence and radioluminescence spectra of the F-plastic display an emission maximum centered approximately at 420 nm. The light output measured for gamma rays is 3100±300 photons/MeV, which is approximately 30% of the light output of the standard EJ-200 plastic scintillator and is similar to EJ-313. The response of the F-plastic to neutrons and gamma rays is presented and compared to the EJ-200 scintillator. Additionally, the n/γ pulse shape discrimination (PSD) was measured and showed improvement of the discrimination at neutron energies as high as 3 MeV.

35. Relativistic and QED corrections to one-bond indirect nuclear spin-spin couplings in X 2 2+ and X 3 2+ ions (X = Zn, Cd, Hg).

Abstract

The indirect spin-spin coupling tensor, J, between mercury nuclei in systems containing this element can be of the order of a few kHz and one of the largest measured. We analyzed the physics behind the electronic mechanisms that contribute to the one- and two-bond couplings n J Hg-Hg (n = 1, 2). For doing so, we performed calculations for J-couplings in the ionized X 2 2+ and X 3 2+ linear molecules (X = Zn, Cd, Hg) within polarization propagator theory using the random phase approximation and the pure zeroth-order approximation with Dirac-Hartree-Fock and Dirac-Kohn-Sham orbitals, both at four-component and zeroth-order regular approximation levels. We show that the "paramagnetic-like" mechanism contributes more than 99.98% to the total isotropic value of the coupling tensor. By analyzing the molecular and atomic orbitals involved in the total value of the response function, we find that the s-type valence atomic orbitals have a predominant role in the description of the coupling. This fact allows us to develop an effective model from which quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects on J-couplings in the aforementioned ions can be estimated. Those effects were found to be within the interval (0.7; 1.7)% of the total relativistic effect on isotropic one-bond 1 J coupling, though ranging those corrections between the interval (-0.4; -0.2)% in Zn-containing ions, to (-1.2; -0.8)% in Hg-containing ions, of the total isotropic coupling constant in the studied systems. The estimated QED corrections show a visible dependence on the nuclear charge Z of each atom X in the form of a power-law proportional to Z X 5 .

Abstract

The Joint European Torus (JET) gamma-ray camera has been recently upgraded with the installation of new gamma-ray detectors, based on LaBr 3 (Ce) scintillation crystals, which add spectroscopic capability to the existing system allowing measurements with good energy resolution (5% at 0.622 MeV), a dynamic range from hundreds of keV up to about 30 MeV, and high counting rate capabilities of MCps. First gamma-ray measurements during the C38 campaign of the JET have been successfully carried out, in particular, in D- 3 He plasmas from three-ion ion cyclotron resonance heating experiments, where the detection of 16.4 MeV γ-rays from D + 3 He → γ + 5 Li reactions with the gamma-ray camera upgrade allowed determining the spatial profile of alpha particles born in D + 3 He fusion reactions.

Abstract

The JET gamma-ray cameras have been recently upgraded within the gamma-ray camera upgrade project in support of development of JET high performance deuterium plasma scenarios and in preparation of deuterium-tritium experiments. New, dedicated detectors based on a LaBr 3 crystal and silicon photo-multipliers have been developed and replaced pre-existing CsI detectors in all 19 channels. The new instrument gives opportunity of making two-dimensional gamma-ray measurements with a counting rate capability exceeding 1 MCounts/s (MCps) and energy resolution better than 5% at 1.1 MeV. The upgrade is of relevance for fast ion and runaway electron physics studies in high performance deuterium discharges and also in plasmas with tritium at neutron yields in the range up to about 5 × 10 17 n/s.

Abstract

In order to optimize the scientific exploitation of JET (Joint European Torus) during the upcoming deuterium-tritium experiments, a set of diagnostic systems is being enhanced. These upgrades focus mainly on the experimental and operational conditions expected during tritium campaigns. It should be stressed that measurements relevant for burning plasmas are specifically targeted. Previously non-available capabilities, such as a current measurement system fully covering all poloidal field circuits, are described in detail. Instrument descriptions, performance prediction, testing, and initial commissioning results of these systems are presented.

Abstract

In this work, we describe the solution developed by the gamma ray camera upgrade enhancement project to improve the spectroscopic properties of the existing JET γ-ray camera. Aim of the project is to enable gamma-ray spectroscopy in JET deuterium-tritium plasmas. A dedicated pilot spectrometer based on a LaBr 3 crystal coupled to a silicon photo-multiplier has been developed. A proper pole zero cancellation network able to shorten the output signal to a length of 120 ns has been implemented allowing for spectroscopy at MHz count rates. The system has been characterized in the laboratory and shows an energy resolution of 5.5% at E γ = 0.662 MeV, which extrapolates favorably in the energy range of interest for gamma-ray emission from fast ions in fusion plasmas.
