PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Globular clusters contain vast repositories of metal-poor stars that represent some of the oldest stellar generations in the Universe. The archaeological footprint of early Galactic evolution may be retained in the measurable properties of globular clusters, such as their ages, mass functions and chemical abundances. Until recently, all photometric studies of globular clusters were restricted to stellar members. Now, the sensitivity of JWST can extend this analysis to the substellar regime. If detected in sufficient numbers, brown dwarf members can provide tight constraints on the properties of their parent population. We present SANDee - a new grid of stellar models that accurately represent the color-magnitude diagrams of globular clusters across the hydrogen-burning limit at a wide range of metallicities. Using JWST NIRCam photometry and the new models, we identify three brown dwarfs in the globular cluster NGC 6397 with effective temperatures of 1300-1800 K, confirmed by both proper motion and model fitting. We use the observed luminosities of discovered brown dwarfs to obtain the first age estimate of a globular cluster from its substellar cooling sequence: 13.4 +/- 3.3 Gyr. We also derive the local mass function of the cluster across the hydrogen-burning limit and find it to be top-heavy, suggesting extensive dynamical evolution. In this work, we present the longest photometric monitoring of up to 1200 hours of the strongly variable brown-dwarf binaries Luhman 16 AB and provide evidence of $\pm$5% variability on a timescale of several-to-hundreds of hours for this object. We show that short-period rotational modulation around 5 hours (k = 1 wavenumber) and 2.5 hours (k = 2 wavenumber) dominate the variability under 10 hours, where the planetary-scale waves model composed of k = 1 and k = 2 waves provides good fits to both the periodogram and light curve. In particular, models consisting of three to four sine waves could explain the variability of light curve durations up to 100 hours. We show that the relative range of k = 2 periods is narrower compared to k = 1 period. Using simple models of zonal banding in Solar System giants, we suggest that the difference in period range arises from the difference in windspeed distribution at low and mid-to-high latitudes in the atmosphere. Lastly, we show that Luhman 16 AB also exhibits long-period $\pm$5% variability with periods ranging from 15 hours up to 100 hours over the longest monitoring of this object. Our results on k = 1 and k = 2 waves and long-period evolution are consistent with previous 3D atmosphere simulations, demonstrating that both latitude-dependent waves and slow-varying atmospheric features are potentially present in Luhman 16 AB atmospheres and are significant contribution to the light curve modulation over hundreds of rotations., Comment: 27 pages, 20 figures. K2-136 is a late-K dwarf ($0.742\pm0.039$ M$_\odot$) in the Hyades open cluster with three known, transiting planets and an age of $650\pm70$ Myr. Analyzing K2 photometry, we found that planets K2-136b, c, and d have periods of $8.0$, $17.3$, and $25.6$ days and radii of $1.014\pm0.050$ R$_\oplus$, $3.00\pm0.13$ R$_\oplus$, and $1.565\pm0.077$ R$_\oplus$, respectively. We collected 93 radial velocity measurements (RVs) with the HARPS-N spectrograph (TNG) and 22 RVs with the ESPRESSO spectrograph (VLT). Analyzing HARPS-N and ESPRESSO data jointly, we found K2-136c induced a semi-amplitude of $5.49\pm0.53$ m s$^{-1}$, corresponding to a mass of $18.1\pm1.9$ M$_\oplus$. We also placed $95$% upper mass limits on K2-136b and d of $4.3$ and $3.0$ M$_\oplus$, respectively. Further, we analyzed HST and XMM-Newton observations to establish the planetary high-energy environment and investigate possible atmospheric loss. K2-136c is now the smallest planet to have a measured mass in an open cluster and one of the youngest planets ever with a mass measurement. K2-136c has $\sim$75% the radius of Neptune but is similar in mass, yielding a density of $3.69^{+0.67}_{-0.56}$ g cm$^{-3}$ ($\sim$2-3 times denser than Neptune). Mass estimates for K2-136b (and possibly d) may be feasible with more RV observations, and insights into all three planets' atmospheres through transmission spectroscopy would be challenging but potentially fruitful. We observe the brightest member of the Praesepe cluster, Epsilon Cancri, to precisely measure the characteristics of the stars in this binary system, en route to a new measurement of the cluster's age. We present spectroscopic radial velocity measurements and interferometric observations of the sky-projected orbit to derive the masses, which we find to be M_1/M_sun = 2.420 +/- 0.008 and M_2/M_sun = 2.226 +/- 0.004. We place limits on the color-magnitude positions of the stars by using spectroscopic and interferometric luminosity ratios while trying to reproduce the spectral energy distribution of Epsilon Cancri. We re-examine the cluster membership of stars at the bright end of the color-magnitude diagram using Gaia data and literature radial velocity information. The binary star data are consistent with an age of 637 +/- 19 Myr, as determined from MIST model isochrones. Palomar 6 (Pal~6) is a moderately metal-poor globular cluster projected towards the Galactic bulge. A full analysis of the cluster can give hints on the early chemical enrichment of the Galaxy and a plausible origin of the cluster. The aim of this study is threefold: a detailed analysis of high-resolution spectroscopic data obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at ESO, the derivation of the age and distance of Pal~6 from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometric data, and an orbital analysis to determine the probable origin of the cluster. High-resolution spectra of six red giant stars in the direction of Palomar 6 were obtained at the $8$m VLT UT2-Kueyen telescope equipped with the UVES spectrograph in FLAMES$+$UVES configuration. Spectroscopic parameters were derived through excitation and ionisation equilibrium of \ion{Fe}{I} and \ion{Fe}{II} lines, and the abundances were obtained from spectrum synthesis. From HST photometric data, the age and distance were derived through a statistical isochrone fitting. Finally, a dynamical analysis was carried out for the cluster assuming two different Galactic potentials. Four stars that are members of Pal~6 were identified in the sample, which gives a mean radial velocity of $174.3\pm1.6$ km\,s$^{-1}$ and a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]$\,=-1.10\pm0.09$ for the cluster. We found an enhancement of $\alpha$-elements (O, Mg, Si, and Ca) $0.29<\,$[X/Fe]$\,<0.38$ and the iron-peak element Ti of [Ti/Fe]$\,\sim+0.3$. The odd-Z elements (Na and Al) show a mild enhancement of [X/Fe]$\,\sim +0.25$. The abundances of both first- (Y and Zr) and second-peak (Ba and La) heavy elements are relatively high, with $+0.4<\,$[X/Fe]$\,<+0.60$ and $+0.4<\,$[X/Fe]$\,<+0.5$, respectively. We present an astrometric study of the proper motions (PMs) in the core of the globular cluster NGC 6441. The core of this cluster has a high density and observations with current instrumentation are very challenging. We combine ground-based, high-angular-resolution NACO@VLT images with Hubble Space Telescope ACS/HRC data and measure PMs with a temporal baseline of 15 yr for about 1400 stars in the centermost 15 arcseconds of the cluster. We reach a PM precision of $\sim$30 $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$ for bright, well-measured stars. Our results for the velocity dispersion are in good agreement with other studies and extend already-existing analyses of the stellar kinematics of NGC 6441 to its centermost region never probed before. In the innermost arcsecond of the cluster, we measure a velocity dispersion of (19.1 $\pm$ 2.0) km s$^{-1}$ for evolved stars. Because of its high mass, NGC 6441 is a promising candidate for harbouring an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). We combine our measurements with additional data from the literature and compute dynamical models of the cluster. We find an upper limit of $M_{\rm IMBH} < 1.32 \times 10^4\,\textrm{M}_\odot$ but we can neither confirm nor rule out its presence. We also refine the dynamical distance of the cluster to $12.74^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$ kpc. Although the hunt for an IMBH in NGC 6441 is not yet concluded, our results show how future observations with extremely-large telescopes will benefit from the long temporal baseline offered by existing high-angular-resolution data., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. Brown dwarfs were recently found to display rotational modulations, commonly attributed to cloud cover of varying thickness, possibly modulated by planetary-scale waves. However, the long-term, continuous, high-precision monitoring data to test this hypothesis for more objects is lacking. By applying our novel photometric approach to TESS data, we extract a high-precision lightcurve of the closest brown dwarfs, which form the binary system Luhman 16AB. Our observations, that cover about 100 rotations of Luhman 16B, display continuous lightcurve evolution. The periodogram analysis shows that the rotational period of the component that dominates the lightcurve is 5.28 h. We also find evidence for periods of 2.5 h, 6.94 h, and 90.8 h. We show that the 2.5 h and 5.28 h periods emerge from Luhman 16B and that they consist of multiple, slightly shifted peaks, revealing the presence of high-speed jets and zonal circulation in this object. We find that the lightcurve evolution is well fit by the planetary-scale waves model, further supporting this interpretation. We argue that the 6.94 h peak is likely the rotation period of Luhman 16A. By comparing the rotational periods to observed v sin(i) measurements, we show that the two brown dwarfs are viewed at angles close to their equatorial planes. We also describe a long-period (P~91 h) evolution in the lightcurve, which we propose emerges from the vortex-dominated polar regions. The NASA-$\it{TESS}$ mission presents a treasure trove for understanding the stars it observes and the Milky Way, in which they reside. We present a first look at the prospects for Galactic and stellar astrophysics by performing initial asteroseismic analyses of bright ($G < 11$) red giant stars in the $\it{TESS}$ Southern Continuous Viewing Zone (SCVZ). Using three independent pipelines, we detect $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta\nu$ in 41% of the 15,405 star parent sample (6,388 stars), with consistency at a level of $\sim 2\%$ in $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\sim 5\%$ in $\Delta\nu$. Based on this, we predict that seismology will be attainable for $\sim 3\times10^{5}$ giants across the whole sky, subject to improvements in analysis and data reduction techniques. The best quality $\it{TESS}$-CVZ data, for 5,574 stars where pipelines returned consistent results, provide high quality power spectra across a number of stellar evolutionary states. This makes possible studies of, for example, the Asymptotic Giant Branch bump (AGBb). We demonstrate that mixed $\ell=1$ modes and rotational splitting are cleanly observed in the 1-year data set. By combining $\it{TESS}$-CVZ data with $\it{TESS}$-HERMES, $\it{SkyMapper}$, APOGEE and $\it{Gaia}$ we demonstrate the potential for Galactic archaeology studies using the data, which provides good age precision and accuracy that reproduces the age of high $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ stars and relationships between mass and kinematics from studies based on $\it{Kepler}$. Better quality astrometry and simpler target selection than the $\it{Kepler}$ sample makes this data ideal for studies of the local star formation history and evolution of the Galactic disc. These results provide a strong case for detailed spectroscopic follow-up in the CVZs to complement that which has been (or will be) collected by current surveys. Both young stars and multi-planet systems are primary objects that allow us to study, understand and constrain planetary formation and evolution theories. We validate the physical nature of two Neptune-type planets transiting TOI-942 (TYC 5909-319-1), a previously unacknowledged young star (50+30-20 Myr) observed by the TESS space mission in Sector 5. Thanks to a comprehensive stellar characterization, TESS light curve modelling and precise radial-velocity measurements, we validated the planetary nature of the TESS candidate and detect an additional transiting planet in the system on a larger orbit. From photometric and spectroscopic observations we performed an exhaustive stellar characterization and derived the main stellar parameters. TOI-942 is a relatively active K2.5V star (logR'hk = -4.17+-0.01) with rotation period Prot = 3.39+-0.01 days, a projected rotation velocity vsini=13.8+-0.5 km/s and a radius of ~0.9 Rsun. We found that the inner planet, TOI-942b, has an orbital period Pb=4.3263+-0.0011 days, a radius Rb=4.242-0.313+0.376 Rearth and a mass upper limit of 16 Mearth at 1-sigma confidence level. The outer planet, TOI-942c, has an orbital period Pc=10.1605-0.0053+0.0056 days, a radius Rc=4.793-0.351+0.410 Rearth and a mass upper limit of 37 Mearth at 1-sigma confidence level.

We present a study of the bright detached eclipsing main sequence binary WOCS 11028 (Sanders 617) in the open cluster M67. Although the binary has only one eclipse per orbital cycle, we show that the masses of the stars can be derived very precisely thanks to a strong constraint on the orbital inclination: $M_A = 1.222\pm0.006 M_\odot$ and $M_B = 0.909\pm0.004 M_\odot$. We use a spectral energy distribution fitting method to derive characteristics of the component stars in lieu of the precise radii that would normally be derived from a doubly-eclipsing binary. The deconvolution of the SEDs reveals that the brighter component of the binary is at the faint turnoff point for the cluster -- a distinct evolutionary point that occurs after the convective core has been established and while the star is in the middle of its movement toward lower surface temperature, before the so-called hook at the end of main sequence. The measurements are in distinct disagreement with evolution models at solar metallicity: higher metal abundances are needed to reproduce the characteristics of WOCS 11028 A. We discuss the changes to model physics that are likely to be needed to address the discrepancies. The clearest conclusions are that diffusion is probably necessary to reconcile spectroscopic abundances of M67 stars with the need for higher metallicity models, and that reduced strength convective overshooting is occurring for stars at the turnoff. The Bayesian isochrone fitting using the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is applied, to derive the probability distribution of the parameters age, metallicity, reddening, and absolute distance modulus. We introduce the \texttt{SIRIUS} code by means of simulated color-magnitude diagrams, including the analysis of multiple stellar populations. The population tagging is applied from the red giant branch to the bottom of the main sequence. Through sanity checks using synthetic {\it HST} color-magnitude diagrams of globular clusters we verify the code reliability in the context of simple and multiple stellar populations. In such tests, the formal uncertainties in age or age difference, metallicity, reddening, and absolute distance modulus can reach $400$ Myr, $0.03$ dex, $0.01$ mag, and $0.03$ mag, respectively. We apply the method to analyse NGC 6752, using Dartmouth stellar evolutionary models. Assuming a single stellar population, we derive an age of $13.7\pm0.5$ Gyr and a distance of $d_{\odot}=4.11\pm 0.08$ kpc, with the latter in agreement within $~3\sigma$ with the inverse Gaia parallax. In the analysis of the multiple stellar populations, three {populations} are clearly identified. From the Chromosome Map and UV/Optical two-color diagrams inspection, we found a fraction of stars of $25\pm5$, $46\pm7$, and $29\pm5$ per cent, for the first, second, and third generations, respectively. These fractions are in good agreement with the literature. An age difference of $500\pm410$ Myr between the first and the third generation is found, with the uncertainty decreasing to $400$ Myr when the helium enhancement is taken into account., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. We present an analysis of a slightly eccentric ($e=0.05$), partially eclipsing long-period ($P = 69.73$ d) main sequence binary system (WOCS 12009, Sanders 1247) in the benchmark old open cluster M67. Using Kepler K2 and ground-based photometry along with a large set of new and reanalyzed spectra, we derived highly precise masses ($1.111\pm0.015$ and $0.748\pm0.005 M_\odot$) and radii ($1.071\pm0.008\pm0.003$ and $0.713\pm0.019\pm0.026 R_\odot$, with statistical and systematic error estimates) for the stars. The radius of the secondary star is in agreement with theory. The primary, however, is approximately $15\%$ smaller than reasonable isochrones for the cluster predict. Our best explanation is that the primary star was produced from the merger of two stars, as this can also account for the non-detection of photospheric lithium and its higher temperature relative to other cluster main sequence stars at the same $V$ magnitude. To understand the dynamical characteristics (low measured rotational line broadening of the primary star and the low eccentricity of the current binary orbit), we believe that the most probable (but not the only) explanation is the tidal evolution of a close binary within a primordial triple system (possibly after a period of Kozai-Lidov oscillations), leading to merger approximately 1Gyr ago. We present a simultaneous, multi-wavelength campaign targeting the nearby (7.2 pc) L8/L9 (optical/near-infrared) dwarf WISEP J060738.65+242953.4 in the mid-infrared, radio, and optical. Spitzer Space Telescope observations show no variability at the 0.2% level over 10 hours each in the 3.6 and 4.5 micron bands. Kepler K2 monitoring over 36 days in Campaign 0 rules out stable periodic signals in the optical with amplitudes great than 1.5% and periods between 1.5 hours and 2 days. Non-simultaneous Gemini optical spectroscopy detects lithium, constraining this L dwarf to be less than ~2 Gyr old, but no Balmer emission is observed. The low measured projected rotation velocity (v sin i < 6 km/s) and lack of variability are very unusual compared to other brown dwarfs, and we argue that this substellar object is likely viewed pole-on. We detect quiescent (non-bursting) radio emission with the VLA. Amongst radio detected L and T dwarfs, it has the lowest observed L_nu and the lowest v sin i. The UV-initiative Hubble Space Telescope Treasury survey of Galactic globular clusters provides a new window into the phenomena that shape the morphological features of the horizontal branch (HB). Using this large and homogeneous catalog of UV and blue photometry, we demonstrate that the HB exhibits discontinuities that are remarkably consistent in color (effective temperature). This consistency is apparent even among some of the most massive clusters hosting multiple distinct sub-populations (such as NGC 2808, omega Cen, and NGC 6715), demonstrating that these phenomena are primarily driven by atmospheric physics that is independent of the underlying population properties. However, inconsistencies arise in the metal-rich clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441, where the discontinuity within the blue HB (BHB) distribution shifts ~1,000 K to 2,000 K hotter. We demonstrate that this shift is likely due to a large helium enhancement in the BHB stars of these clusters, which in turn affects the surface convection and evolution of such stars. Our survey also increases the number of Galactic globular clusters known to host blue-hook stars (also known as late hot flashers) from 6 to 23 clusters.
