This article, published in the journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology, presents the findings of a multicenter prospective study that aimed to investigate the differences in uterine contractility between women with a septate uterus and women with a normal uterus throughout the menstrual cycle. The study analyzed the characteristics of myometrial contractility in 29 patients with a septate uterus and compared them to 95 women with a normal uterus. The results showed that patients with a septate uterus had altered myometrial contraction, with lower values in contraction frequency, velocity, amplitude, and coordination compared to those with a healthy uterus. The study suggests that these alterations in uterine contractility may explain the poor reproductive outcomes observed in women with uterine malformation and highlights hysteroscopy metroplasty as a potential treatment to restore normal uterine contractility. Astrocytes harbour functional receptors to many neurotransmitters, including substance P (SP), an undecapeptide belonging to the tachykinin family of peptide transmitters. SP activates malignant glial cells to induce cytokine release and proliferation, both responses being relevant for tumour progression. In tumours developed in nude mice transplanted subcutaneously (s.c.) to U373 MG human glioma cells, the presence of SP was observed at immunohistochemistry. Although the administration of exogenous SP did not significantly affect the size or development of U373 MG xenograft, a role of SP in supporting glioma progression in vivo was highlighted by the tumour growth (inhibition induced by highly specific and selective human tachykinin NK[SUP1] receptor antagonists (MEN 11467 and MEN 11149). The anti-tumour activity of MEN 11467 was observed both with s.c. or intravenous treatments and was partially reverted by the concomitant administration of exogenous SP. Doxorubicin did not show any activity in controlling U373 MG growth in this in vivo model. A novel therapeutic approach to (treat malignant gliomas with tachykinin NK[SUB1] receptor antagonists is suggested by these findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The neuropeptide substance P(SP), by stimulating tachykinin NK[SUB1] receptors (NK[SUB1]R), triggers a number of biological responses in human glioma cells which are potentially relevant for tumour growth. First, radioligand binding studies demonstrated the presence of tachykinin NK[SUB1]R on SNB-19, DBTRG-05 MG and U373 MG, but not on U138 MG and MOG-G-GCM human glioma cell lines. Second, application of SP or neurokinin A (NKA) to NK[SUB1]R[SUP+] glioma cell lines increased the secretion of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and potentiated IL-6 induced by IL-1β. SP also up-regulated the release of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) by the U373 MG glioma cell line. Third, SP induced new DNA synthesis and enhanced the proliferation rate of NK[SUB1][SUP+], but not of NK[SUB1]R[SUP-] glioma cell lines. Also, NKA stimulated the proliferation and cytokine secretion in NK[SUB1]R[SUP+] glioma cell lines. All the stimulant effects of SP/NKA on NK[SUB1]R[SUP+] glioma cell lines were completely blocked by a specific tachykinin NK[SUB1]R antagonist, MEN 11467. Purpose: Through a paradigmatic case and a systematic literature review, we present various endovascular strategies for treating pelvic paravesical arteriovenous vascular malformations (AVMs), with a focus on the efficacy of accessing the shunt point through direct puncture of the venous collector., Case Report: A 42-year-old male with nonspecific pelvic pain underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan, which revealed bilateral pelvic AVMs characterized by a network of arteriolar afferents originating from the internal iliac arteries and the inferior mesenteric artery, draining into 2 interconnected giant venous sacs in the bilateral paravesical space. The malformation was classified as type II according to the Cho classification. Following an unsuccessful attempt at transarterial embolization, we devised a plan for bilateral transvenous embolization in 2 separate sessions. Venous access was achieved through percutaneous transperineal ultrasound-guided puncture of the dominant outflow venous sac. A microcatheter was then placed directly into the shunt point, where sclerosant and embolic agents were specifically delivered. Follow-up imaging showed complete obliteration of both pelvic AVMs., Conclusions: Effective hemostasis of pelvic paravesical AVMs can be achieved by targeting the shunt point from the aneurysmal dominant outflow vein, potentially through direct percutaneous puncture., Clinical Impact: This study aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of a transvenous approach in cases of embolization of pelvic paravesical arteriovenous vascular malformations (AVMs). The key to successful treatment lies in occluding the shunt point within the aneurysmal dominant outflow vein's wall, which can be reached transvenously and potentially through direct percutaneous puncture. The replacement of synthetic and petroleum-based ingredients with greener alternatives of natural origin is an imperative issue in rubber technology for the tire industry. In this study, a glycerin-esterified maleated rosin resin, derived from natural resources, is examined as a potential tackifier in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) formulations. A comparison is made with two synthetic resins commonly used as tackifiers in tire manufacturing: a petroleum-derived aromatic resin and a phenolic resin. Specifically, this research investigates how these resins affect the structure, dynamics, and curing characteristics of SBR compounds, which are strictly related to the mechanical and technological properties of the final products. Moving die rheometer and equilibrium swelling experiments are employed to analyze vulcanization kinetics and crosslink density, which are differently influenced by the different resins. Information on the polymer-resin compatibility is gained by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamo-mechanical analysis, while solid-state NMR methods offer insights into the structure and dynamics of both cured and uncured SBR compounds at the molecular level. Overall, our analysis shows that the resin of vegetal origin has a comparable impact on the SBR compound to that observed for the synthetic resins and could be further tested for industrial applications.

Background: We aimed to investigate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of Pressurized IntraPeritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) in platinum-resistant recurrence of ovarian cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis, while our secondary endpoint was to establish any changes in quality of life estimated via the EORTC QLQ-30 and QLQ-OV28 questionnaires., Methods: In this monocentric, single-arm, phase II trial, women were prospectively recruited and every 28-42 days underwent courses of PIPAC with doxorubicin 2.1 mg/m 2 followed by cisplatin 10.5 mg/m 2 via sequential laparoscopy., Results: Overall, 98 PIPAC procedures were performed on 43 women from January 2016 to January 2020; three procedures were aborted due to extensive intra-abdominal adhesions. The clinical benefit rate (CBR) was reached in 82% of women. Three cycles of PIPAC were completed in 18 women (45%), and 13 (32.5%) and 9 (22.5%) patients were subjected to one and two cycles, respectively. During two PIPAC procedures, patients experienced an intraoperative intestinal perforation. There were no treatment-related deaths. Nineteen patients showed no response according to the Peritoneal Regression Grading Score (PRGS) and 8 patients showed minor response according to the PRGS. Median time from ovarian cancer relapse to disease progression was 12 months (95% confidence interval [CI] 6.483-17.517), while the median overall survival was 27 months (95% CI 20.337-33.663). The EORTC QLQ-28 and EORTC QLQ-30 scores did not worsen during therapy., Conclusions: PIPAC seems a feasible approach for the treatment of this subset of patients, without any impact on their quality of life. The objective of these Guidelines is to provide recommendations for the classification, indication, treatment and management of patients suffering from aneurysmal pathology of the visceral and renal arteries. The methodology applied was the GRADE-SIGN version, and followed the instructions of the AGREE quality of reporting checklist. Clinical questions, structured according to the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcome) model, were formulated, and systematic literature reviews were carried out according to them. Selected articles were evaluated through specific methodological checklists. Considered Judgments were compiled for each clinical question in which the characteristics of the body of available evidence were evaluated in order to establish recommendations. Overall, 79 clinical practice recommendations were proposed. Indications for treatment and therapeutic options were discussed for each arterial district, as well as follow-up and medical management, in both candidate patients for conservative therapy and patients who underwent treatment. The recommendations provided by these guidelines simplify and improve decision-making processes and diagnostic-therapeutic pathways of patients with visceral and renal arteries aneurysms. Their widespread use is recommended.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of the ultrasound-guided popliteal sciatic nerve block (PSNB) for pain management during endovascular treatment of chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI)., Material and Methods: From November 2020 to January 2022, 111 CLTI patients that underwent endovascular procedures were prospectively enrolled in this prospective single-arm interventional study. Ultrasound-guided PSNB was used for procedural pain control. Pain intensity was evaluated throughout the procedure (baseline, 10 min after the block, pain peak, and at the end of the procedure) with the visual analog scale (VAS)., Results: Forty-six patients underwent above-the-knee revascularization (ATK), 20/111 below-the-knee (BTK) revascularization, 20/111 to both ATK and BTK revascularization. In 25 cases, no endovascular option was feasible at diagnostic angiography. The PSNB was effective in 96% of patients, with no need for further pain management with a statistically significant reduction (p < 0.0001) in the mean value of the VAS from 7.86 ± 1.81 (pre-procedural) to 2.04 ± 2.20 after 10 min from the block and up to 0.74 ± 1.43 at the end of the procedure (mean time 43 min). Only 1 complication related to the popliteal sciatic nerve block was registered (a temporary foot drop, completely resolved within 48 h). The time necessary to perform the block ranged between 4 and 10 min., Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided PSNB is a feasible and effective method to manage patients with rest pain and increase comfort and compliance during endovascular procedures., Clinical Relevance Statement: An ultrasound-guided popliteal sciatic nerve block is a safe, feasible, and effective technique to manage pain during endovascular treatment of chronic limb-threatening ischemia, especially in frail patients with multiple comorbidities who are poor candidates for deep sedoanalgesia or general anesthesia., Key Points: Endovascular treatment of CTLI may require long revascularization sessions in patients with high levels of pain at rest, which could be exacerbated during the revascularization procedure. The PSNB is routinely used for anesthesia and analgesia during foot and ankle surgery, but the experience with lower limb revascularization procedures is very limited and not included in any international guideline. Ultrasound-guided PSNB is a feasible and effective regional anesthesia technique to relieve procedural and resting pain. This paper presents the complete design, fabrication, and characterization of a shallow-mesa photodiode for short-wave infra-red (SWIR) sensing. We characterized and demonstrated photodiodes collecting 1.55 μm photons with a pixel pitch as small as 3 μm. For a 5 μm pixel pitch photodiode, we measured the external quantum efficiency reaching as high as 54%. With substrate removal and an ideal anti-reflective coating, we estimated the internal quantum efficiency as achieving 77% at 1.55 μm. The best measured dark current density reached 5 nA/cm 2 at -0.1 V and at 23 °C. The main contributors responsible for this dark current were investigated through the study of its evolution with temperature. We also highlight the importance of passivation with a perimetric contribution analysis and the correlation between MIS capacitance characterization and dark current performance.

Background: The case describes a successful endovascular thrombectomy using the ClotTriever System for an acute subclavian thrombosis in venous thoracic outlet syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report on use of Inari ClotTriever for acute upper extremity deep venous thrombosis due to venous thoracic outlet syndrome. The rapid technical and clinical success of our intervention may be an interesting cue for interventional radiologist colleagues., Case Presentation: Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis in the setting of venous thoracic outlet syndrome generally occurs in young adults after excessive arm activity and can sometimes be managed with anticoagulation. In this case, a 29-year-old male diagnosed with acute effort-induced thrombosis of the left subclavian vein and persistent symptoms following low-molecular-weight heparin therapy underwent mechanical thrombectomy. Successful thrombectomy was completed with > 90% thrombus burden reduction and no complication. The patient experienced immediate symptom relief and vein patency was confirmed via imaging 3 months post procedure., Conclusions: Mechanical thrombectomy is a promising treatment technique for thrombosis associated with venous thoracic outlet syndrome., (© 2023. Ionic liquids (ILs) represent promising working fluids to be used in thermal energy storage (TES) technologies thanks to their peculiar properties, such as low volatility, high chemical stability, and high heat capacity. Here, we studied the thermal stability of the IL N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate ([BmPyrr]FAP), a potential working fluid for TES applications. The IL was heated at 200 °C for up to 168 h either in the absence or in contact with steel, copper, and brass plates to simulate the conditions used in TES plants. High-resolution magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was found to be useful for the identification of the degradation products of both the cation and the anion, thanks to the acquisition of 1 H, 13 C, 31 P, and 19 F-based experiments. In addition, elemental analysis was performed on the thermally degraded samples by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Our analysis shows a significant degradation of the FAP anion upon heating for more than 4 h, even in the absence of the metal/alloy plates; on the other hand, the [BmPyrr] cation displays a remarkable stability also when heated in contact with steel and brass.
