Search

We study the implications of the observed excess in $B^+ \to K^+ \nu \bar{\nu}$ under the assumption of Rank-One Flavour Violation, i.e. that New Physics couples to a single specific direction in flavour space. By varying this direction we perform analyses at the level of the low-energy EFT, the SMEFT, and with explicit mediators such as leptoquarks and colorless vectors ($Z^\prime$ and $V^\prime$). We study correlations with other flavour, electroweak and collider observables, finding that the most interesting ones are with $K \to \pi \nu \bar{\nu}$, $B_s \to \mu^+ \mu^-$, meson mixing and the LHC searches in $\tau^+ \tau^-$ high-energy tails. Among the various mediators, the scalar leptoquarks $\tilde{R}_2$ and $S_1$ offer the best fits of the Belle-II excess, while being consistent with the other bounds. On the other hand, colorless vectors are strongly constrained by meson mixing and resonance searches in $p p \to \tau^+ \tau^-$. We study the phenomenological viability of chiral extensions of the Standard Model, with new chiral fermions acquiring their mass through interactions with a single Higgs. We examine constraints from electroweak precision tests, Higgs physics and direct searches at the LHC. Our analysis indicates that purely chiral scenarios are perturbatively excluded by the combination of Higgs coupling measurements and LHC direct searches. However, allowing for a partial contribution from vector-like masses opens up the parameter space and non-decoupled exotic leptons could account for the observed 2$\sigma$ deviation in $h \to Z\gamma$. We study perturbative unitarity constraints on generic interactions between fermion and vector fields, which are allowed to have generic quantum numbers under a $\prod_i SU(N_i) \otimes U(1)$ group. A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10~TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. We reconsider the case of light vectors coupled to anomalous fermionic currents, focussing on the interplay between UV and IR dynamics. Taking as a general framework the gauging of the Standard Model accidental symmetries, we show that it is possible to devise an anomaly-free UV completion with mostly-chiral heavy fermions such that anomalous Wess-Zumino terms are suppressed in the IR, thus relaxing would-be strong bounds from the longitudinal emission of light vectors coupled to non-conserved currents. We classify such scenarios and show that they will be extensively probed at the high-luminosity phase of the LHC via the measurement of the $h \to Z \gamma$ rate and the direct search for non-decoupling charged leptons., Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure. In the path towards a muon collider with center of mass energy of 10 TeV or more, a stage at 3 TeV emerges as an appealing option. Reviewing the physics potential of such muon collider is the main purpose of this document. In order to outline the progression of the physics performances across the stages, a few sensitivity projections for higher energy are also presented. There are many opportunities for probing new physics at a 3 TeV muon collider. Some of them are in common with the extensively documented physics case of the CLIC 3 TeV energy stage, and include measuring the Higgs trilinear coupling and testing the possible composite nature of the Higgs boson and of the top quark at the 20 TeV scale. Other opportunities are unique of a 3 TeV muon collider, and stem from the fact that muons are collided rather than electrons. We study perturbative unitarity constraints on generic Yukawa interactions where the involved fields have arbitrary quantum numbers under an $\prod_i SU(N_i) \otimes U(1)$ group. We study the constraints imposed by perturbative unitarity on the new physics interpretation of the muon $g-2$ anomaly. Within a Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) approach, we find that scattering amplitudes sourced by effective operators saturate perturbative unitarity at about 1 PeV. This corresponds to the highest energy scale that needs to be probed in order to resolve the new physics origin of the muon $g-2$ anomaly. On the other hand, simplified models (e.g.~scalar-fermion Yukawa theories) in which renormalizable couplings are pushed to the boundary of perturbativity still imply new on-shell states below 200 TeV. We finally suggest that the highest new physics scale responsible for the anomalous effect can be reached in non-renormalizable models at the PeV scale., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

While the $S_3$ scalar leptoquark presents a possible tree-level explanation of the $b \to s \ell \ell$ flavour anomalies, it suffers from two conceptual problems which are often disregarded by model-builders. Firstly, the quantum numbers of the $S_3$ allow for a renormalisable diquark operator that would trigger rapid proton decay unless its coupling were tuned away. Secondly, one expects the leptoquark to have generic couplings to leptons, which require tuning to avoid stringent experimental bounds on lepton flavour violation. By gauging a $U(1)$ current that acts as $L_\mu - L_\tau$ on the Standard Model (SM) fermions, and under which the leptoquark has charge $-1$, one can remedy both these problems. The additional $U(1)$, which is spontaneously broken at some high scale, is associated with a massive $Z^\prime$ gauge boson and a scalar SM singlet $\Phi$, which play no direct role in mediating the anomalous $B$ meson decays. By computing one- and two-loop mass corrections, we show that this pair of particles can be hidden away at much higher mass scales without destabilising either the Higgs or the leptoquark masses. The only low-energy relic of gauging $L_\mu - L_\tau$ is thus the accidental global symmetry structure of the lagrangian. We report on the status of efforts to improve the reinterpretation of searches and measurements at the LHC in terms of models for new physics, in the context of the LHC Reinterpretation Forum. We detail current experimental offerings in direct searches for new particles, measurements, technical implementations and Open Data, and provide a set of recommendations for further improving the presentation of LHC results in order to better enable reinterpretation in the future. In a recent paper [arXiv:2002.00459], Buttazzo et al. show how the annually modulated rate of the DAMA experiments can be possibly interpreted as an artefact due to the interplay between a time-dependent background and the method to account for it. In this work, we compare this hypothesis against the sinusoidal dark matter signal as proposed by the DAMA collaboration. We produce in a Bayesian approach a quantitative comparison of how much the experimental observations are in support of each hypothesis. Our conclusions are that the odds against the hypothesis of a time varying background being responsible for the annual modulation are decreased by a Bayes factor larger than 10^8 after considering the public available data of the DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA experiments. In this work we also elaborate on general aspects of the analysis procedure. Indeed, in order to optimise the background subtraction procedure, the DAMA collaboration only considers data-taking cycles with a duration of roughly one year. We argue that any data-taking cycle is informative, and we propose a procedure to include this effect, as well as the possibility to include a slowly varying component for the background., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures, submitted to JCAP

We explore the possibility that lepton family numbers and baryon number are such good symmetries of Nature because they are the global remnant of a spontaneously broken gauge symmetry. An almost arbitrary linear combination of these symmetries (together with a component of global hypercharge) can be consistently gauged, if the Standard Model (SM) fermion content is augmented by three chiral SM singlet states. Within this framework of $U(1)$ extensions of the SM one generically expects flavour non-universality to emerge in the charged leptons, in such a way that naturally prevents lepton flavour violation, by aligning the mass and weak eigenbases. For quarks, all the SM Yukawa couplings responsible for their observed masses and mixings arise at the renormalisable level. We perform fits to show that models in this class can explain $R_{K^{(\ast)}}$ and the other neutral current $B$ anomaly data if we introduce a heavy vector-like quark to mediate the required quark flavour violation, while simultaneously satisfying other constraints from direct $Z^\prime$ searches at the LHC, $B_s$ meson mixing, a number of electroweak precision observables, and neutrino trident production. Within this symmetry-motivated framework of models, we find interesting implications for the flavour anomalies; notably, any axial couplings of the $Z^\prime$ to electrons and muons must be flavour universal, with the flavour universality violation arising solely from the vector-like couplings. We assume that the quark-flavor coefficients matrix of the semileptonic operators addressing the neutral-current B-meson anomalies has rank-one, i.e. it can be described by a single vector in quark-flavor space. We propose a mechanism that allows for sizeable flavour violation in quark-lepton currents, while suppressing flavour changing neutral currents in quark-quark and lepton-lepton sectors. The mechanism is applied to the recently proposed 4321 renormalizable model, which can accommodate the current experimental anomalies in $B$-meson decays, both in charged and neutral currents, while remaining consistent with all other indirect flavour and electroweak precision measurements and direct searches at high-$p_T$. To support this claim, we present an exhaustive phenomenological survey of this fully calculable UV complete model and highlight the rich complementarity between indirect and direct searches., Comment: 62 pages, 16 figures. Partial compositeness as a theory of flavor in the lepton sector is assessed. We begin presenting the first systematic analysis of neutrino mass generation in this context, and identifying the distinctive mass textures. We then update the bounds from charged lepton flavor and CP violating observables. We put forward a $U(1)^3\times CP$ symmetry of the composite sector, in order to allow the new physics to be not far above the TeV scale. This hypothesis effectively suppresses the new contributions to the electron EDM and $\mu\to e\gamma$, by far the most constraining observables, and results in a novel pattern of flavor violation and neutrino masses. The CP violation in the elementary-composite mixing is shown to induce a CKM phase of the correct size, as well as order-one phases in the PMNS matrix. We compare with the alternative possibility of introducing multiple scales of compositeness for leptons, that also allow to evade flavor and CP constraints. Finally, we examine violations of lepton flavor universality in $B$-meson semi-leptonic decays. The neutral-current anomalies can be accommodated, predicting strong correlations among different lepton flavors, with a few channels close to the experimental sensitivity., Comment: Reference from ACME collaboration added and bounds from electron EDM updated. The vector leptoquark representation, $U_\mu = (3,1,2/3)$, was recently identified as an exceptional single mediator model to address experimental hints on lepton flavour universality violation in semileptonic $B$-meson decays, both in neutral ($b \to s \mu \mu$) and charged ($b \to c \tau \nu$) current processes. Nonetheless, it is well-known that massive vectors crave an ultraviolet (UV) completion. We present the first full-fledged UV complete and calculable gauge model which incorporates this scenario while remaining in agreement with all other indirect flavour and electroweak precision measurements, as well as, direct searches at high-$p_T$. The model is based on a new non-abelian gauge group spontaneously broken at the TeV scale, and a specific flavour structure suppressing flavour violation in $\Delta F = 2$ processes while inducing sizeable semileptonic transitions., Comment: 7 pages, 1 table. v2: To appear in Phys. Motivated by the recent hints of lepton flavour non-universality in $B$-meson semi-leptonic decays, we study the constraints of perturbative unitarity on the new physics interpretation of the anomalies in $b \to c \ell \bar \nu$ and $b \to s \ell \bar \ell$ transitions. Within an effective field theory approach we find that $2 \to 2$ fermion scattering amplitudes saturate the unitarity bound below 9 TeV and 80 TeV, respectively for $b \to c \ell \bar \nu$ and $b \to s \ell \bar \ell$ transitions. Stronger bounds, up to few TeV, are obtained when the leading effective operators are oriented in the direction of the third generation, as suggested by flavour models. We finally address unitarity constraints on simplified models explaining the anomalies and show that the new physics interpretation is ruled out in a class of perturbative realizations., Comment: 24 pages, matches EPJC version

The LHCb measurement of the $\mu/e$ ratio $R_{K^*}$ indicates a deficit with respect to the Standard Model prediction, supporting earlier hints of lepton universality violation observed in the $R_K$ ratio. We show that the $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ ratios alone constrain the chiralities of the states contributing to these anomalies, and we find deviations from the Standard Model at the $4\sigma$ level. This conclusion is further corroborated by hints in the theoretically challenging $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ distributions. Theoretical interpretations in terms of $Z'$, lepto-quarks, loop mediators, and composite dynamics are discussed. We describe the anomaly structure of an composite Higgs model in which the $SO(5)/SO(4)$ coset structure of the minimal model is extended by an additional, non-linearly-realized $U(1)_{\eta}$. In addition, we show that the effective lagrangian admits a term that, like the Wess-Zumino-Witten term in the chiral lagrangian for QCD, is not invariant under the non-linearly realized symmetries, but rather changes by a total derivative. This term is unlike the Wess-Zumino-Witten term in that it does not arise from anomalies. If present, it may give rise to the rare decay $\eta \rightarrow h W^+ W^- Z$. The phenomenology of the singlet in this model differs from that in a model based on $SO(6)/SO(5)$, in that couplings to both gluons and photons, arising via anomalies, are present. We study the constraints implied by partial wave unitarity on new physics in the form of spin-zero di-boson resonances at LHC. We derive the scale where the effective description in terms of the SM supplemented by a single resonance is expected to break down depending on the resonance mass and signal cross-section. Likewise, we use unitarity arguments in order to set perturbativity bounds on renormalizable UV completions of the effective description. We finally discuss under which conditions scalar di-boson resonance signals can be accommodated within weakly-coupled models., Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures. Motivated by the tantalizing excesses recently reported in the di-photon invariant mass spectrum at the LHC, we scrutinize some implications of scalar di-photon resonances in high energy proton-proton collisions. In particular, indications of a large width impose several challenges for model building. We show how calculability and unitarity considerations severely limit possible perturbative realizations of such a signal and propose a simple criterion that can be adapted to any renormalizable model. Furthermore, we discuss correlations between a di-photon excess and precision observables, including the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of quarks and leptons, neutral meson oscillations and radiative flavor changing neutral current mediated decays of heavy leptons and hadrons. We find that existing searches and measurements significantly constrain the possibilities for a scalar resonance decaying into final states involving Standard Model fermions. We propose future search strategies which could elucidate some remaining currently unconstrained decay channels and discuss possible correlations between the di-photon excess and several recently reported flavor anomalies, showing that the latter can be addressed in a new incarnation of a gauged $U(1)^\prime$ model, with the di-photon resonance being the physical remnant of the $U(1)^\prime$-breaking field., Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures. Minimal Dark Matter (MDM) is a theoretical framework highly appreciated for its minimality and yet its predictivity. Of the two only viable candidates singled out in the original analysis, the scalar eptaplet has been found to decay too quickly to be around today, while the fermionic quintuplet is now being probed by indirect Dark Matter (DM) searches. It is therefore timely to critically review the MDM paradigm, possibly pointing out generalizations of this framework. We propose and explore two distinct directions. One is to abandon the assumption of DM electric neutrality in favor of absolutely stable, millicharged DM candidates which are part of $SU(2)_{\text{L}}$ multiplets with integer isospin. Another possibility is to lower the cutoff of the model, which was originally fixed at the Planck scale, to allow for DM decays. We examine the `diboson' excess at $\sim 2$ TeV seen by the LHC experiments in various channels. We provide a comparison of the excess significances as a function of the mass of the tentative resonance and give the signal cross sections needed to explain the excesses. We also present a survey of available theoretical explanations of the resonance, classified in three main approaches. Beyond that, we discuss methods to verify the anomaly, determining the major properties of the various surpluses and exploring how different models can be discriminated. We address the recent anomalies in semi-leptonic $B$-meson decays using a model of fermion masses based on the $U(2)$ flavor symmetry. The new contributions to $b \to s \ell \ell$ transitions arise due to a tree-level exchange of a $Z^\prime$ vector boson gauging a $U(1)$ subgroup of the flavor symmetry. They are controlled by a single parameter and are approximately aligned to the Standard Model prediction, with constructive interference in the $e$-channel and destructive interference in the $\mu$-channel. The current experimental data on semi-leptonic $B$-meson decays can be very well reproduced without violating existing constraints from flavor violation in the quark and lepton sectors. A very simple way to obtain comparable baryon and DM densities in the early Universe is through their contemporary production from the out-of-equilibrium decay of a mother particle, if both populations are suppressed by comparably small numbers, i.e. the CP violation in the decay and the branching fraction respectively. We present a detailed study of this kind of scenario in the context of a R-parity violating realization of the MSSM in which the baryon asymmetry and the gravitino Dark Matter are produced by the decay of a Bino. The implementation of this simple picture in a realistic particle framework results, however, quite involving, due to the non trivial determination of the abundance of the decaying Bino, as well as due to the impact of wash-out processes and of additional sources both for the baryon asymmetry and the DM relic density. In order to achieve a quantitative determination of the baryon and Dark Matter abundances, we have implemented and solved a system of coupled Boltzmann equations for the particle species involved in their generation, including all the relevant processes. In the most simple, but still general, limit, in which the processes determining the abundance and the decay rate of the Bino are mediated by degenerate right-handed squarks, the correct values of the DM and baryon relic densities are achieved for a Bino mass between 50 and 100 TeV, Gluino NLSP mass in the range 15-60 TeV and a gravitino mass between 100 GeV and few TeV. These high masses are unfortunately beyond the kinematical reach of LHC. On the contrary, an antiproton signal from the decays of the gravitino LSP might be within the sensitivity of AMS-02 and gamma-ray telescopes., Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures

We classify weak-scale extensions of the Standard Model which automatically preserve its accidental and approximate symmetry structure at the renormalizable level and which are hence invisible to low-energy indirect probes. By requiring the consistency of the effective field theory up to scales of 10^15 GeV and after applying cosmological constraints, we arrive at a finite set of possibilities that we analyze in detail. One of the most striking signatures of this framework is the presence of new charged and/or colored states which can be efficiently produced in high-energy particle colliders and which are stable on the scale of detectors., Comment: 55 pages, 13 figures

We attempt to explain recent anomalies in semileptonic $B$ decays at LHCb via a composite Higgs model, in which both the Higgs and an $SU(2)_L$-triplet leptoquark arise as pseudo-Goldstone bosons of the strong dynamics. Fermion masses are assumed to be generated via the mechanism of partial compositeness, which largely determines the leptoquark couplings and implies non-universal lepton interactions. The latter are needed to accommodate tensions in the $b \to s \mu \mu$ dataset and to be consistent with a discrepancy measured at LHCb in the ratio of $B^+ \to K^+ \mu^+ \mu^-$ to $B^+ \to K^+ e^+ e^-$ branching ratios. The data imply that the leptoquark should have a mass of around a TeV. We find that the model is not in conflict with current flavour or direct production bounds, but we identify a few observables for which the new physics contributions are close to current limits and where the leptoquark is likely to show up in future measurements. The leptoquark will be pair-produced at the LHC and decay predominantly to third-generation quarks and leptons, and LHC13 searches will provide further strong bounds., Comment: 27 pages. v2: Added more details in section 3.2 on quantum numbers of composite operators, and custodial protection of Z->bb. The LHCb collaboration has recently presented their result on R_K = BR(B+ -> K+ mu+ mu-)/ BR(B+ -> K+ e+ e-) for the dilepton invariant mass bin m_{ll}^2 = 1-6 GeV^2 (l = mu, e). The measurement shows an intriguing 2.6 sigma deviation from the Standard Model (SM) prediction. In view of this, we study model independent New Physics (NP) explanations of R_K consistent with other measurements involving b -> s l l transition, relaxing the assumption of lepton universality. We perform a Bayesian statistical fit to the NP Wilson Coefficients and compare the Bayes Factors of the different hypotheses in order to quantify their goodness-of-fit. Flavor violating interactions of the Higgs boson are a generic feature of models with extended electroweak symmetry breaking sectors. Here, we investigate CP violation in these interactions, which can arise from interference of tree-level and 1-loop diagrams. We compute the CP asymmetry in flavor violating Higgs decays in an effective field theory with only one Higgs boson and in a general Type-III Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). We find that large (~ O(10%)) asymmetries are possible in the 2HDM if one of the extra Higgs bosons has a mass similar to the Standard Model Higgs. For the poorly constrained decay modes h -> tau mu and h -> tau e, this implies that large lepton charge asymmetries could be detectable at the LHC. We quantify this by comparing the sensitivity of the LHC to existing direct and indirect constraints. Interestingly, detection prospects are best if Higgs mixing is relatively small - a situation that is preferred by the current data. Nevertheless, CP violation in h -> tau mu or h -> tau e will only be observable if nonzero rates for these decay modes are measured very soon., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We show how the ratio of 3- to 2-jets cross sections is affected by the presence of new physics and argue that it can be used to place a model-independent bound on new particles carrying QCD color charge. The experimental fact that the energy density in Dark Matter and in Baryons is of the same order is one of the most puzzling in cosmology. In this letter we suggest a new mechanism able to explain this coincidence in the context of out-of-equilibrium baryogenesis with DM production "\`a la" SuperWIMP starting from the same initial particle. We investigate the possibility of obtaining sizeable R-parity breaking interactions violating baryon number but not lepton number within supersymmetric grand unified theories. Such a possibility allows to ameliorate the naturalness status of supersymmetry while maintaining successful gauge coupling unification, one of its main phenomenological motivations. Recently, the LHCb and CDF collaborations reported the measure of an unexpectedly large direct CP asymmetry in D meson decays. In this paper we ask if new physics associated with Partial Compositeness could plausibly explain this result. We find that Composite Higgs models with mass scale around 10 TeV can account for it, while marginally satisfying all other flavor constraints in the quark sector. The minimal framework is however inadequate in the lepton sector due to the strong constraint from \mu\ to e \gamma. This tension can be efficiently alleviated by realizing Partial Compositeness within Supersymmetry. The resulting models can saturate the CP asymmetry in D decays for superpartner masses close to the TeV scale and somewhat large A-terms. The supersymmetric realization of Partial Compositeness also offers a predictive and phenomenologically viable organizing principle for R-Parity violation, and may result in very distinctive signatures at hadron colliders. We construct the non-linear realized Lagrangian for the Goldstone Bosons associated to the breaking pattern of SU(4) to SO(4). This pattern is expected to occur in any Technicolor extension of the standard model featuring two Dirac fermions transforming according to real representations of the underlying gauge group. We concentrate on the Minimal Walking Technicolor quantum number assignments with respect to the standard model symmetries. We demonstrate that for, any choice of the quantum numbers, consistent with gauge and Witten anomalies the spectrum of the pseudo Goldstone Bosons contains electrically doubly charged states which can be discovered at the Large Hadron Collider., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

We study the extension of the Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) hypothesis to the MSSM without R-parity. The novelty of our approach lies in the observation that supersymmetry enhances the global symmetry of the kinetic term and in the fact that we consider as irreducible sources of the flavour symmetry breaking all the couplings of the superpotential including the R-parity violating ones. If R-parity violation is responsible for neutrino masses, our setup can be seen as an extension of MFV to the lepton sector. We analyze two patterns based on the non-abelian flavour symmetries SU(3)^4 \otimes SU(4) and SU(3)^5. In the former case the total lepton number and the lepton flavour number are broken together, while in the latter the lepton number can be broken independently by an abelian spurion, so that visible effects and peculiar correlations can be envisaged in flavour changing charged lepton decays like \ell_i \rightarrow \ell_j \gamma., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures. We investigate the cosmological aspects of Tree Level Gauge Mediation, a recently proposed mechanism in which the breaking of supersymmetry is communicated to the soft scalar masses by extra gauge interactions at the tree level. Embedding the mechanism in a Grand Unified Theory and requiring the observability of sfermion masses at the Large Hadron Collider, it follows that the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle is a gravitino with a mass of the order of 10 GeV. The analysis in the presence of R-parity shows that a typical Tree Level Gauge Mediation spectrum leads to an overabundance of the Dark Matter relic density and a tension with the constraints from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. This suggests to relax the exact conservation of the R-parity. The underlying SO(10) Grand Unified Theory together with the bounds from proton decay provide a rationale for considering only bilinear R-parity violating operators. We finally analyze the cosmological implications of this setup by identifying the phenomenologically viable regions of the parameter space., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures. References added. Tree-level gauge mediation (TGM) is a scenario of SUSY breaking in which the tree-level exchange of heavy (possibly GUT) vector fields generates flavor-universal sfermion masses. In this work we extend this framework to the case of E_6 that is the natural extension of the minimal case studied so far. Despite the number of possible E_6 subgroups containing G_SM is large (we list all rank 6 subgroups), there are only three different cases corresponding to the number of vector messengers. As a robust prediction we find that sfermion masses are SU(5) invariant at the GUT scale, even if the gauge group does not contain SU(5). If SUSY breaking is mediated purely by the U(1) generator that commutes with SO(10) we obtain universal sfermion masses and thus can derive the CMSSM boundary conditions in a novel scenario., Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

We construct the magnetic dual of QCD with one adjoint Weyl fermion. The dual is a consistent solution of the 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions, allows for flavor decoupling and remarkably constitutes the first nonsupersymmetric dual valid for any number of colors. Tree level gauge mediation (TGM) may be considered as the simplest way to communicate supersymmetry breaking: through the tree level renormalizable exchange of heavy gauge messengers. We study its general structure, in particular the general form of tree level sfermion masses and of one loop, but enhanced, gaugino masses. This allows us to set up general guidelines for model building and to identify the hypotheses underlying the phenomenological predictions. In the context of models based on the "minimal" gauge group SO(10), we show that only two "pure" embeddings of the MSSM fields are possible using $d< 120$ representations, each of them leading to specific predictions for the ratios of family universal sfermion masses at the GUT scale, $m^2_{\bar{5}} = 2 m^2_{10}$ or $m^2_{\bar{5}} = (3/4) m^2_{10}$ (in SU(5) notation). These ratios are determined by group factors and are peculiar enough to make this scheme testable at the LHC. We propose a new scheme in which supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the MSSM sfermions by GUT gauge interactions at the tree level. The (positive) contribution of MSSM fields to $\text{Str}(\mathcal{M}^2)$ is automatically compensated by a (negative) contribution from heavy fields. Sfermion masses are flavour universal, thus solving the supersymmetric flavour problem. In the simplest SO(10) embedding, the ratio of different sfermion masses is predicted and differs from mSugra and other schemes, thus making this framework testable at the LHC. Naturalness arguments do not forbid the possibility that the first two families of squarks and sleptons are heavier than the rest of the supersymmetric spectrum. In this framework, we study the phenomenology related to the flavor physics and we give bounds on the flavor violating parameters that we compare with the case of nearly degenerate squarks. We study the framework of hierarchical soft terms, in which the first two generations of squarks and sleptons are heavier than the rest of the supersymmetric spectrum. This scheme gives distinctive predictions for the pattern of flavor violations, which we compare to the case of nearly degenerate squarks. Experiments in flavor physics have started to probe the most interesting parameter region, especially in $b\leftrightarrow s$ transitions, where hierarchical soft terms can predict a phase of $B_s$ mixing much larger than in the Standard Model., Comment: 21pp
