- Abstract
The deep ocean comprises complex ecosystems made up of numerous community and habitat types that provide multiple services that benefit humans. As the industrialization of the deep sea proceeds, a standardized and robust set of methods and metrics need to be developed to monitor the baseline conditions and any anthropogenic and climate change-related impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem function, and ecosystem services. Here, we review what we have learned from studies involving offshore-energy industries, including state-of-the-art technologies and strategies for obtaining reliable metrics of deep-sea biodiversity and ecosystem function. An approach that includes the detection and monitoring of ecosystem services, with open access to baseline data from multiple sectors, can help to improve our global capacity for the management of the deep ocean.

- Abstract
The deep sea is often viewed as a vast, dark, remote, and inhospitable environment, yet the deep ocean and seafloor are crucial to our lives through the services that they provide. Our understanding of how the deep sea functions remains limited, but when treated synoptically, a diversity of supporting, provisioning, regulating and cultural services becomes apparent. The biological pump transports carbon from the atmosphere into deep-ocean water masses that are separated over prolonged periods, reducing the impact of anthropogenic carbon release. Microbial oxidation of methane keeps another potent greenhouse gas out of the atmosphere while trapping carbon in authigenic carbonates. Nutrient regeneration by all faunal size classes provides the elements necessary for fueling surface productivity and fisheries, and microbial processes detoxify a diversity of compounds. Each of these processes occur on a very small scale, yet considering the vast area over which they occur they become important for the global functioning of the ocean. The deep sea also provides a wealth of resources, including fish stocks, enormous bioprospecting potential, and elements and energy reserves that are currently being extracted and will be increasingly important in the near future. Society benefits from the intrigue and mystery, the strange life forms, and the great unknown that has acted as a muse for inspiration and imagination since near the beginning of civilization. While many functions occur on the scale of microns to meters and timescales up to years, the derived services that result are only useful after centuries of integrated activity. This vast dark habitat, which covers the majority of the globe, harbors processes that directly impact humans in a variety of ways; however, the same traits that differentiate it from terrestrial or shallow marine systems also result in a greater need for integrated spatial and temporal understanding as it experiences increased use by society. 18. Macrobenthic ecology of the West Shetland Slope

- Abstract
An unusual and complex hydrographic regime in the Faeroe-Shetland Channel makes it one of the best-studied oceanographic provinces in the world. However, few benthic ecological studies of the region have been undertaken since the early 1880s. The present study examines the influence of a number of environmental variables on macrobenthic faunal distribution on the West Shetland Slope. Macrobenthic samples were collected by corer and grab along a depth transect in 1996 and 1998. The macrofauna studied were retained on 500 m and 250 m sieves enabling comparisons to be made between samples taken using these two sieve sizes. The addition of the 250 m-to-500 m size fraction to the >500 m size fraction resulted in an increase in species diversity (31% at the 150 m station) and species richness (38% at the 800 m station). Faunal abundance was also seen to increase by an average of 40% per station when combining the smaller size fraction. The results also illustrated that water temperature appears to be the major environmental variable controlling benthic macrofaunal distribution (especially in terms of standing stock), polychaete species diversity, feeding modes and restriction of polychaete species to specific temperature bands. Other environmental variables such as sediment grain size and total organic carbon also influenced macrofaunal distribution although to a lesser degree. The level of taxonomic resolution required was investigated and the conclusion drawn was that to achieve adequate discrimination between stations for this area, the macrofauna should be identified to species level.

24. Temporal variability in phytodetritus and megabenthic activity at the seabed in the deep northeast Atlantic

- Abstract
We report a ten-year study of the abundance and activity of megabenthos on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain, northeast Atlantic, together with observations on the occurrence of phytodetritus at the deep-sea floor (4850 m). Using the Southampton Oceanography Centre time-lapse camera system, ‘Bathysnap’, we have recorded a radical change in the abundance and activity of megabenthos between the two periods of study (1991–1994 and 1997–2000). In 1991–1994, the larger megabenthos occurred at an abundance of c. 71.6/ha and were dominated by large holothurians. In addition, there were very substantial populations of smaller megabenthic ophiuroids (c. 4979/ha). Together, the total megabenthos are estimated to track over some 17 cm2/m2/d (exploiting 100% of the surface of the seabed in c. 2.5 years). In 1997–2000, the larger megabenthos increased to an abundance of c. 204/ha and were joined by exceptional numbers of a small holothurian species (Amperima rosea, 6457/ha) and ophiuroids (principally Ophiocten hastatum, 53,539/ha). The total megabenthos population was tracking at an estimnated rate of c. 247 cm2/m2/d (exploiting 100% of seabed in just 6 weeks). Coincident with these increases in the abundance and activity of the megabenthos, there were apparently no mass depositions of aggregated phytodetritus to the seabed in the summers of 1997–1999. Mass occurrences of phytodetritus had been noted during the summer months of the three years previously studied (1991, 1993 and 1994), with covering between 50 and 96% of the sediment surface. There is a statistically significant (p<0.02) negative correlation between maximum extent of this seabed cover of phytodetritus and seabed tracking by megabenthos. 25. Macrobenthic ecology of the West Shetland Slope

- Abstract
An unusual and complex hydrographic regime in the Faeroe-Shetland Channel makes it one of the best-studied oceanographic provinces in the world. However, few benthic ecological studies of the region have been undertaken since the early 1880s. The present study examines the influence of a number of environmental variables on macrobenthic faunal distribution on the West Shetland Slope. Macrobenthic samples were collected by corer and grab along a depth transect in 1996 and 1998. The macrofauna studied were retained on 500 m and 250 m sieves enabling comparisons to be made between samples taken using these two sieve sizes. The addition of the 250 m-to-500 m size fraction to the >500 m size fraction resulted in an increase in species diversity (31% at the 150 m station) and species richness (38% at the 800 m station). Faunal abundance was also seen to increase by an average of 40% per station when combining the smaller size fraction. The results also illustrated that water temperature appears to be the major environmental variable controlling benthic macrofaunal distribution (especially in terms of standing stock), polychaete species diversity, feeding modes and restriction of polychaete species to specific temperature bands. Other environmental variables such as sediment grain size and total organic carbon also influenced macrofaunal distribution although to a lesser degree. The level of taxonomic resolution required was investigated and the conclusion drawn was that to achieve adequate discrimination between stations for this area, the macrofauna should be identified to species level.

The response of a deep-water benthic microbial community to organic matter (OM) enrichment was studied in the unexplored region of the SW Cretan margin (E. Mediterranean). A food pulse of 0.5 g C m−2 was simulated by adding 13C-labelled diatoms to sediment cores retrieved from 1079 m depth. The diatom addition resulted in a significant increase in the sediment community oxygen consumption (SCOC). After 6 days, ∼50 mg C m−2 of the added material was processed by the microbial community. The major carbon sink was respiration, which accounted for ∼96% of the total processed material. The carbon uptake rate (12 mg C m−2 d−1) was considerably lower than previously published values in the E. Mediterranean at similar depths. The microbial community in our study site is distinct, as revealed by the unusually high presence of branched phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA). Previous studies have revealed that the slope under investigation may act as a conduit of OM from the shallow shelf to the deep basins, resulting in the prevalence of relatively refractory OM at mid-slope depths. We postulate that sedimentary processes affect the amount of bioavailable sedimentary OM and consequently the structure and physiological state of bacterial community in our study site. The distinct microbial community composition at our station compared to more stable adjacent slopes could explain the limited response of the microbial community to the addition of labile OM.
