Perovskite nitrides are starting to be explored for their promising properties distinct from their oxide counterparts. Here, through first-principles density functional computations, we study the intricate relationship between ferroelectricity and metallicity in the ferroelectric nitride LaWN$_3$. We systematically assess the impact of electron and hole doping via the background charge method, revealing that both types of charge carriers diminish the propensity for ferroelectricity in LaWN$_3$, although to remarkably different extents. Specifically, the introduction of electrons leads to centrosymmetry at a lower concentration value of nearly 0.2 electrons per formula unit. In contrast, the addition of holes does not result in centrosymmetry at reasonable doping values of up to 0.3 holes per formula unit. We present the underlying mechanisms behind these findings, noting that adding electrons fills the valence orbitals of both W and N atoms. This filling leads to a screening effect on the long-range repulsion between these atoms, thereby reducing the off-centering of W. On the other hand, hole doping does not significantly alter the W-N bonding nature, resulting in a more robust off-centering. Furthermore, we introduce explicit impurity atoms and analyze the influence of the different factors contributing to the change in polarization, namely, the size of the dopant, charge carriers introduced by the dopant, and changes in lattice constants. We discover that doped LaWN$_3$ can be a promising polar metal, especially with acceptor dopants. The existence of exceptional points (EPs) ${-}$ where both eigenvalues and eigenvectors converge ${-}$ is a key characteristic of non-Hermitian physics. A newly-discovered class of magnets ${-}$ termed as altermagnets (AMs) ${-}$ are characterized by a net zero magnetization as well as spin-split bands. In this study, we propose the emergence of non-Hermitian physics at AM-ferromagnet (FM) junctions. We discover that such a junction hosts tunable EPs. We demonstrate that the positions of these emergent EPs can be tuned using an external applied magnetic field and show that for a critical value of the applied magnetic field the EPs can annihilate. Notably, the number and position of the EPs crucially depends on the type of AM and its orientation with respect to the FM. The non-linear generalization of the Hall effect has recently gained much attention, with a rapidly growing list of non-centrosymmetric materials that display higher-order Hall responses under time-reversal invariant conditions. The intrinsic second-order Hall response arises due to the first-order moment of Berry curvature -- termed Berry curvature dipole -- which requires broken inversion and low crystal symmetries. Chiral materials are characterized by their lack of improper symmetries such as inversion, mirror plane, and roto-inversion. Owing to this absence of symmetries, in this work, we propose chiral systems as ideal platforms to study the Berry curvature dipole-induced non-linear Hall effects. We use state-of-the-art first-principles computations, in conjunction with symmetry analyses, to explore a variety of chiral material classes -- metallic \ch{NbSi2}, semiconducting elemental Te, insulating HgS, and topological multifold semimetal CoSi. We present the emergence and tunability of the Berry curvature dipole in these chiral materials. In particular, we demonstrate that the two enantiomeric pairs exhibit an exactly opposite sign of the Berry curvature dipole. We complement our \textit{ab initio} findings with a general tight-binding minimal model and give estimates for non-linear Hall voltages, which are experimentally accessible. Alternative magnetic materials or ``altermagnets", characterized by their non-relativistic, momentum-dependent spin-split states, represent a cutting-edge advancement in the field of magnetism, offering promising avenues for spintronic applications. Among these materials, hexagonal MnTe has emerged as a standout material candidate for its substantial spin-splitting. In this study, employing first-principles electronic structure calculations and spin group symmetry analysis, we delve into the interplay of altermagnetism and pressure in two main phases of MnTe. Our relativistic calculations demonstrate the presence of tunable anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in hexagonal MnTe. In addition, our results underscore the pivotal role of pressure as a tuning parameter for the alternative magnetic traits in the system. Furthermore, we identify another phase of MnTe with orthorhombic structure, namely $\gamma$-MnTe, hosting altermagnetic characteristics. We study, in detail, its response in AHE and spin-spliting due to magnetization and pressure variations, respectively. Our study highlights the substantial impact of pressure on the properties of alternative magnetic materials, particularly emphasizing the pronounced tuning effect observed in the hexagonal and orthorhombic MnTe.

The Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit sets the lower bound of carrier mean free path for coherent quasiparticle transport. Metallicity beyond this limit is of great interest because it is often closely related to quantum criticality and unconventional superconductivity. Progress along this direction mainly focuses on the strange-metal behaviors originating from the evolution of quasiparticle scattering rate such as linear-in-temperature resistivity, while the quasiparticle coherence phenomena in this regime are much less explored due to the short mean free path at the diffusive bound. Here we report the observation of quantum oscillations from Landau quantization near the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit in CaAs3. Despite the insulator-like temperature dependence of resistivity, CaAs3 presents giant magnetoresistance and prominent Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations from Fermi surfaces, indicating highly coherent band transport. In contrast, the quantum oscillation is absent in the magnetic torque. The quasiparticle effective mass increases systematically with magnetic fields, manifesting a much larger value than the expectation given by magneto-infrared spectroscopy. It suggests a strong many-body renormalization effect near Fermi surface. We find that these unconventional behaviors may be explained by the interplay between the mobility edge and the van Hove singularity, which results in the formation of coherent cyclotron orbits emerging at the diffusive bound. This review presents recent breakthroughs in the realm of nonlinear Hall effects, emphasizing central theoretical foundations and recent experimental progress. We elucidate the quantum origin of the second-order Hall response, focusing on the Berry curvature dipole, which may arise in inversion symmetry broken systems. The theoretical framework also reveals the impact of disorder scattering effects on the nonlinear response. We further discuss the possibility of obtaining nonlinear Hall responses beyond the second order. We examine symmetry-based indicators essential for the manifestation of nonlinear Hall effects in time-reversal symmetric crystals, setting the stage for a detailed exploration of theoretical models and candidate materials predicted to exhibit sizable and tunable Berry curvature dipole. We summarize groundbreaking experimental reports on measuring both intrinsic and extrinsic nonlinear Hall effects across diverse material classes. Finally, we highlight some of the other intriguing nonlinear effects, including nonlinear planar Hall, nonlinear anomalous Hall, and nonlinear spin and valley Hall effects. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we systematically studied the electronic band structure of Mn$_3$Ge in the vicinity of the Fermi level. We observe several bands crossing the Fermi level, confirming the metallic nature of the studied system. We further observe several flat bands along various high symmetry directions, consistent with the DFT calculations. The calculated partial density of states (PDOS) suggests a dominant Mn $3d$ orbital contribution to the total valence band DOS. With the help of orbital-resolved band structure calculations, we qualitatively identify the orbital information of the experimentally obtained band dispersions. Out-of-plane electronic band dispersions are explored by measuring the ARPES data at various photon energies. The emergence of the fascinating non-linear Hall effect intrinsically depends on the non-zero value of the Berry curvature dipole. In this work, we predict that suitable strain engineering in layered van der Waals material phosphorene can give rise to a significantly large Berry curvature dipole. Using symmetry design principles, and a combination of feasible strain and staggered on-site potentials, we show how a substantial Berry curvature dipole may be engineered at the Fermi level. We discover that monolayer phosphorene exhibits the most intense Berry curvature dipole peak near 11.8% strain, which is also a critical point for the topological phase transition in pristine phosphorene. Furthermore, we have shown that the necessary strain value to achieve substantial Berry curvature dipole can be reduced by increasing the number of layers. We have revealed that strain in these van der Waals systems not only alters the magnitude of Berry curvature dipole to a significant value but allows control over its sign. We propose an exact analytical decimation transformation scheme to explore the fascinating coexistence of flat bands and Dirac fermions in three-dimensional coupled kagome systems. Our method allows coarse-graining of the parameter space that maps the original system to an equivalent low-level lattice. The decimated system enables defining a quantity in the tight-binding parameter space that predominantly controls the emergence of a flat band (FB) and provides a specific criterion for absolute flatness. Likewise, in terms of atomic separations, we develop a quantity that primarily controls the FB width in real materials and thus can be helpful in predicting new systems hosting FB as well as in tuning the FB width. Our predictions on the emergence of the flat band and Dirac fermions are confirmed for M$_3$X (M= Ni, Mn, Co, Fe; X= Al, Ga, In, Sn, Cr,...) family of materials, leveraging materials databases and first-principles calculations. In recent years, non-Hermitian phases in classical and quantum systems have garnered significant attention. In particular, their intriguing band geometry offers a platform for exploring unique topological states and unconventional quantum dynamics. However, their topological characterization becomes particularly interesting and challenging in complex multiband systems. Here we propose a decimation framework, which leverages real space renormalization group to streamline the analysis of complex multiband non-Hermitian systems. Our systematic approach allows us to probe different phases and transitions, analyze bulk-boundary correspondence, formulate generalized Brillouin zones, investigate open boundary spectra, survey non-Bloch van Hove singularities, study disorder-induced effects, and explore tunable non-Hermitian flat band physics. Additionally, our framework allows proposing a hypothesis about quasi-one-dimensional bipartite non-Hermitian systems with flat bands, demonstrating their decoupling into Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains and compact localized states across various models. We propose a non-Hermitian (NH) interface system formed between two NH nodal line semimetals driven by optical fields as a platform for generation and tailoring of higher-order van Hove singularities (VHS). Through an analytical analysis of the density of states (DOS), we find VHS with logarithmic divergences in the Hermitian limit. Upon introducing NH terms, four exceptional rings on two sides of the Fermi line are formed. By tuning the NH parameters and the light amplitude, we find a situation when one exceptional ring crosses the Fermi line, where a saddle point appears and results in a paired VHS around the origin. In contrast, when an exceptional contour resides at the Fermi energy, the saddle points critically get destroyed and we obtain a single peak in the DOS, with power-law divergences. These higher-order divergences that appear in an NH system have a different origin than that of the higher-order VHS in Hermitian systems, where no saddle point merging is noted. We studied the electrical transport, Hall effect, and magnetic properties of monoclinic layered ferromagnet Cr$_{2.76}$Te$_4$. Our studies demonstrate Cr$_{2.76}$Te$_4$ to be a soft ferromagnet with strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Below 50 K, the system shows an antiferromagnetic-like transition. Interestingly, between 50 and 150 K, we observe fluctuating magnetic moments between in-plane and out-of-plane orientations, leading to non-coplanar spin structure. On the other hand, the electrical resistivity data suggest it to be metallic throughout the measured temperature range, except a $kink$ at around 50 K due to AFM ordering. The Rhodes-Wohlfarth ratio $\frac{\mu_{eff}}{\mu_{s}}=1.89 (>1)$ calculated from our magnetic studies confirms that Cr$_{2.76}$Te$_4$ is an itinerant ferromagnet. Large anomalous Hall effect has been observed due to the skew-scattering of impurities and the topological Hall effect has been observed due to non-coplanar spin-structure in the presence of strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Rashba spin-orbit coupled systems are an important class of materials noted for diverse fundamental and applied phenomena. Recently, the emergence of non-linear Hall effect under conditions of time-reversal symmetry has been discovered in materials with broken inversion symmetry. In this work, we study the second- and third-order Hall response in Rashba systems with hexagonal warping. Starting with a low-energy model, we obtain the analytic expressions and discover the unique dipole profile in Rashba systems with hexagonal warping. Furthermore, we extend the analysis using a realistic tight-binding model. Next, we predict the existence of a third-order Hall effect in these systems, and calculate the Berry connection polarizability tensor analytically. We also show how the model parameters affect the third-order conductivity. Our predictions can help in the experimental realization of Berry curvature multipole physics in Rashba materials with hexagonal warping, and provide a new platform for engineering the non-linear Hall effects., Comment: Published version

The union of topology and non-Hermiticity has led to the unveiling of many intriguing phenomena. We introduce a synthetic spin-engineered model belonging to symmetry class AI, which is a rare occurrence, and demonstrate the emergence of a multi-fold spectral topology. As an example of our proposal, we engineer non-Hermiticity in the paradigmatic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by introducing a generalized synthetic spin, leading to an emergent two-fold spectral topology that governs the decoupled behaviour of the corresponding non-Hermitian skin effect. As a consequence of the spin choice, our model exhibits a rich phase diagram consisting of distinct topological phases, which we characterize by introducing the notion of paired winding numbers, which, in turn, predict the direction of skin localization under open boundaries. We demonstrate that the choice of spin parameters enables control over the directionality of the skin effect, allowing for it to be unilateral or bilateral. Furthermore, we discover non-dispersive flat bands emerging within the inherent SSH model framework, arising from the spin-engineering approach. We also introduce a simplified toy model to capture the underlying physics of the emergent flat bands and direction-selective skin effect. As an illustration of experimental feasibility, we present a topoelectric circuit that faithfully emulates the underlying spin-engineered Hamiltonian, providing a viable platform for realizing our predicted effects. Hyperbolic lattices are starting to be explored in search of novel phases of matter. At the same time, non-Hermitian physics has come to the forefront in photonic, optical, phononic, and condensed matter systems. In this work, we introduce non-Hermitian hyperbolic matter and elucidate its exceptional properties in depth. We use hyperbolic Bloch theory to investigate band structures of hyperbolic lattices in the presence of non-Hermitian on-site gain and loss as well as non-reciprocal hopping. Using various analytical and numerical approaches we demonstrate widely accessible and tunable exceptional points and contours in {10,5} tessellations, which we characterize using phase rigidity, energy scaling, and vorticity. We further demonstrate the occurrence of higher-order exceptional points and contours in the {8,4} tessellations using the method of Newton polygons, supported by vorticity and phase rigidity computations. Finally, we investigate the open boundary spectra and densities of states to compare with results from band theory, along with a demonstration of boundary localisation. One of the key features of non-Hermitian systems is the occurrence of exceptional points (EPs), spectral degeneracies where the eigenvalues and eigenvectors merge. In this work, we propose applying neural networks to characterize EPs by introducing a new feature -- summed phase rigidity (SPR). We consider different models with varying degrees of complexity to illustrate our approach, and show how to predict EPs for two-site and four-site gain and loss models. Further, we demonstrate an accurate EP prediction in the paradigmatic Hatano-Nelson model for a variable number of sites. Remarkably, we show how SPR enables a prediction of EPs of orders completely unseen by the training data. In recent years, non-Hermitian (NH) topological semimetals have garnered significant attention due to their unconventional properties. In this work, we explore the transport properties of a three-dimensional dissipative Weyl semi-metal formed as a result of the stacking of two-dimensional Chern insulators. We find that unlike Hermitian systems where the Hall conductance is quantized, in presence of non-Hermiticity, the quantized Hall conductance starts to deviate from its usual nature. We show that the non-quantized nature of the Hall conductance in such NH topological systems is intimately connected to the presence of exceptional points (EPs). We find that in the case of open boundary conditions, the transition from a topologically trivial regime to a non-trivial topological regime takes place at a different value of the momentum than that of the periodic boundary spectra. This discrepancy is solved by considering the non-Bloch case and the generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ). Finally, we present the Hall conductance evaluated over the GBZ and connect it to the separation between the Weyl nodes, within the non-Bloch theory., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Topological superconductors are an exciting class of quantum materials from the point of view of the fundamental sciences and potential technological applications. Here, we report on the successful introduction of superconductivity in a ferromagnetic layered skyrmion system Cr$_3$Te$_4$, obtained by the Sn intercalation, below a transition temperature of $T_c$$\approx$3.5 K. We observe several interesting physical properties, such as superconductivity, magnetism, and the topological Hall effect, simultaneously in this system. Despite the magnetism and Meissner effects being anisotropic, the superconductivity observed from the in-plane electrical resistivity ($\rho_{\it{bc}}$) is nearly isotropic between $H\parallel \it{bc}$ and $H\parallel \it{a}$, suggesting separate channels of conduction electrons responsible for the superconductivity and magnetism of this system, which is also supported by our spin-resolved DFT calculations. We identify two orders of higher carrier density in superconducting Sn$_{0.06}$Cr$_{3}$Te$_4$ than the parent Cr$_3$Te$_4$. A jump in the specific heat is noticed around the $T_c$ with a volume fraction of 33\%, confirming the bulk superconductivity in Sn$_{0.06}$Cr$_{3}$Te$_4$. In addition to the introduction of superconductivity, tuning of topological Hall properties is noticed with Sn intercalation. Non-Hermitian systems have been widely explored in platforms ranging from photonics to electric circuits. A defining feature of non-Hermitian systems is exceptional points (EPs), where both eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. Tropical geometry is an emerging field of mathematics at the interface between algebraic geometry and polyhedral geometry, with diverse applications to science. Here, we introduce and develop a unified tropical geometric framework to characterize different facets of non-Hermitian systems. We illustrate the versatility of our approach using several examples, and demonstrate that it can be used to select from a spectrum of higher-order EPs in gain and loss models, predict the skin effect in the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, and extract universal properties in the presence of disorder in the Hatano-Nelson model. Correlated electron materials (CEMs) host a rich variety of condensed matter phases. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a prototypical CEM with a temperature-dependent metal-to-insulator (MIT) transition with a concomitant crystal symmetry change. External control of MIT in VO2 - especially without inducing structural changes - has been a long-standing challenge. In this work, we design and synthesize modulation-doped VO2-based thin film heterostructures that closely emulate a textbook example of filling control in a correlated electron insulator. Using a combination of charge transport, hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and structural characterization, we show that the insulating state can be doped to achieve carrier densities greater than 5x10^21 cm^(-3) without inducing any measurable structural changes. We find that the MIT temperature (T_MIT) continuously decreases with increasing carrier concentration. Remarkably, the insulating state is robust even at doping concentrations as high as ~0.2 e-/vanadium. The synergy between non-Hermitian concepts and topological ideas have led to very fruitful activity in the recent years. Their interplay has resulted in a wide variety of new non-Hermitian topological phenomena being discovered. In this review, we present the key principles underpinning the topological features of non-Hermitian phases. Using paradigmatic models -- Hatano-Helson, non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger and non-Hermitian Chern insulator -- we illustrate the central features of non-Hermitian topological systems, including exceptional points, complex energy gaps and non-Hermitian symmetry classification. We discuss the non-Hermitian skin effect and the notion of the generalized Brillouin zone, which allows restoring the bulk-boundary correspondence. Using concrete examples, we examine the role of disorder, present the linear response framework, and analyze the Hall transport properties of non-Hermitian topological systems. We also survey the rapidly growing experimental advances in this field. Photodetector based on two-dimensional (2D) materials is an ongoing quest in optoelectronics. These 2D photodetectors are generally efficient at low illuminating power but suffer severe recombination processes at high power, which results in the sublinear power dependence of photoresponse and lower optoelectronic efficiency. The desirable superlinear photocurrent is mostly achieved by sophisticated 2D heterostructures or device arrays, while 2D materials rarely show intrinsic superlinear photoresponse. Here, we report the giant superlinear power dependence of photocurrent based on multi-layer Ta$_2$NiS$_5$. While the fabricated photodetector exhibits good sensitivity ($3.1 mS/W$ per square) and fast photoresponse ($31 \mu$$s$), the bias-, polarization-, and spatial-resolved measurements point to an intrinsic photoconductive mechanism. By increasing the incident power density from $1.5 \mu$W/$\mu$$m^{2}$ to $200 \mu$W/$\mu$$m^{2}$, the photocurrent power dependence varies from sublinear to superlinear. At higher illuminating conditions, a prominent superlinearity is observed with a giant power exponent of $\gamma=1.5$. The unusual photoresponse can be explained by a two-recombination-center model where the distinct density of states of the recombination centers effectively closes all recombination channels. The fabricated photodetector is integrated into camera for taking photos with enhanced contrast due to the superlinearity. Our work provides an effective route to enable higher optoelectronic efficiency at extreme conditions.

The interplay of topology and non-Hermiticity has led to diverse, exciting manifestations in a plethora of systems. In this work, we systematically investigate the role of non-Hermiticity in the Chern insulating Haldane model on a dice lattice. Due to the presence of a non-dispersive flat band, the dice-Haldane model hosts a topologically rich phase diagram with the non-trivial phases accommodating Chern numbers $\pm 2$. We introduce non-Hermiticity into this model in two ways -- through balanced non-Hermitian gain and loss, and by non-reciprocal hopping in one direction. Both these types of non-Hermiticity induce higher-order exceptional points of order three. We substantiate the presence and the order of these higher-order exceptional points using the phase rigidity and its scaling. Further, we construct a phase diagram to identify and locate the occurrence of these exceptional points in the parameter space. Non-Hermiticity has yet more interesting consequences on a finite-sized lattice. Unlike for balanced gain and loss, in the case of non-reciprocal hopping, the nearest-neighbour dice lattice system under periodic boundary conditions accommodates a finite, non-zero spectral area in the complex plane. This manifests as the non-Hermitian skin effect when open boundary conditions are invoked. In the more general case of the dice-Haldane lattice model, the non-Hermitian skin effect can be caused by both gain and loss or non-reciprocity. Fascinatingly, the direction of localization of the eigenstates depends on the nature and strength of the non-Hermiticity. We establish the occurrence of the skin effect using the local density of states, inverse participation ratio and the edge probability, and demonstrate its robustness to disorder. Symmetry-protected spectral topology in non-Hermitian systems has interesting manifestations such as dynamically anomalous chiral currents and skin effect. We study the interplay between symmetries and disorder in a paradigmatic model for spectral topology - the non-reciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We numerically study the effect of disorder in on-site and non-reciprocal hopping terms. Using a real-space winding number, we investigate the impact of disorder on the spectral topology and the anomalous chiral modes under periodic boundary conditions. We discover a remarkable robustness of chiral current under disorder. The value of the chiral current retains the clean system value, is independent of disorder strength and is tracked completely by the real-space winding number for class A which has no symmetries, and class AIII, which has a sub-lattice symmetry. In class $D^\dagger$, which has $PT$-symmetric on-site gain and loss terms, we find that the disorder-averaged current is not robust while the winding number is robust. We study the localization physics using the inverse participation ratio and local density of states. As the disorder strength is increased, a mobility-edge phase with a finite winding appears. The abrupt vanishing of the winding number marks a transition from a partially localized to a fully localized phase. Under open boundary conditions, we observe a series of transitions through skin effect-partial skin effect-no skin effect phases. Further, we study the non-Hermitian Anderson skin effect (NHASE) for different symmetry classes, where the system without skin effect develops a disorder-driven skin effect at intermediate disorder values. The anomalous Hall effect in time-reversal symmetry broken systems is underpinned by the concept of Berry curvature in band theory. However, recent experiments reveal that the nonlinear Hall effect can be observed in non-magnetic systems without applying an external magnetic field. The emergence of nonlinear Hall effect under time-reversal symmetric conditions can be explained in terms of non-vanishing Berry curvature dipole arising from inversion symmetry breaking. In this work, we availed realistic tight-binding models, first-principles calculations, and symmetry analyses to explore the combined effect of transverse electric field and strain, which leads to a giant Berry curvature dipole in the elemental buckled honeycomb lattices -- silicene, germanene, and stanene. The external electric field breaks the inversion symmetry of these systems, while strain helps to attain an asymmetrical distribution of Berry curvature of a single valley. Furthermore, the topology of the electronic wavefunction switches from the band inverted quantum spin Hall state to normal insulating one at the gapless point. This band gap closing at the critical electric field strength is accompanied by an enhanced Berry curvature and concomitantly a giant Berry curvature dipole at the Fermi level. Our results predict the occurrence of an electrically switchable nonlinear electrical and thermal Hall effect in a new class of elemental systems that can be experimentally verified., Comment: Published version

The discovery of time-reversal-invariant topological states has drawn great attention in recent decades. However, despite the potential of displaying a variety of exotic physics, the study of magnetic topological phases lags behind due to underlying added complexity of magnetism. In this work, we predict the interplay of magnetism and topology in the non-centrosymmetric ternary manganese compound MnIn$_2$Te$_4$, using first-principles calculations. At ambient pressure, the ground state of the system is an antiferromagnetic insulator. With the application of small hydrostatic pressure ($\sim$0.50 GPa), it undergoes a magnetic transition and the ferromagnetic state becomes energetically favourable. At $\sim$2.92 GPa, the system undergoes a transition into a Weyl semimetallic phase, which hosts multiple Weyl points in the bulk and is associated with non-trivial surface Fermi arcs. Remarkably, we discover that the number of Weyl points in this system can be controlled by pressure and that these manifest in an anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC). In addition to proposing a new candidate magnetic topological material, our work demonstrates that pressure can be an effective way to induce and control topological phases, as well as AHC, in magnetic materials. Janus transition metal dichalcogenides, with intrinsic mirror asymmetry, exhibit a wide array of interesting properties. In this work, we study Janus monolayers derived from WTe$_2$ using first-principles and tight-binding calculations. We discover that WSeTe and WSTe are topologically trivial, in contrast to the parent quantum spin Hall insulator WTe$_2$. Motivated by the growing interest in non-linear Hall effect, which also requires asymmetric structures, we investigate the Berry curvature and its dipole in these Janus systems and find that they exhibit strikingly large values of Berry curvature dipole, despite being in the topologically trivial phase. We track down the origin of this behaviour and put forth a low-energy massive Dirac model to understand the central features of our ab initio computations. We report the experimental observation of Ising superconductivity in 3-dimensional NbSe2 stacked with single-layer MoS2. The angular dependence of the upper critical magnetic field and the temperature dependence of the upper parallel critical field confirm the appearance of two-dimensional Ising superconductivity in the 3-dimensional NbSe2 with single-layer MoS2 overlay. We show that the superconducting phase has strong Ising spin-orbit correlations which make the holes spin non-degenerate. Our observation of Ising superconductivity in heterostructures of few-layer NbSe2 of thickness ~ 15 nm with single-layer MoS2 raises the interesting prospect of observing topological chiral superconductors with nontrivial Chern numbers in a momentum-space spin-split fermionic system.

In this work we study many-body 'steady states' that arise in the non-Hermitian generalisation of the non-interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model at a finite density of fermions. We find that the hitherto known phase diagrams for this system, derived from the single-particle gap closings, in fact correspond to distinct non-equilibrium phases, which either carry finite currents or are dynamical insulators where particles are entrapped. Each of these have distinct quasi-particle excitations and steady state correlations and entanglement properties. Looking at finite-sized systems, we further modulate the boundary to uncover the topological features in such steady states -- in particular the emergence of leaky boundary modes. Using a variety of analytical and numerical methods we develop a theoretical understanding of the various phases and their transitions, and uncover the rich interplay of non-equilibrium many-body physics, quantum entanglement and topology in a simple looking, yet a rich model system., Comment: Published version

Hexagonal warping (HW) in three-dimensional topological insulators is, by now, well-known. We show that non-Hermitian (NH) loss/gain can generate an exceptional HW effect in double Weyl-semimetals (DWSM). This unique feature of DWSMs has distinctive effects on Fermi surface topology. Importantly, in the presence of such a $k^3$ spin orbit coupling mimicking term, the symmetry associated with the DWSMs is changed, leading to four exceptional points, among which two are degenerate. Introducing a driving field removes this degeneracy. The combined action of the NH warping and driving parameters leads to notable effects, including merging and tuning of exceptional points. We analyze the topological nature of the generated exceptional contours by evaluating several topological invariants, such as winding number, vorticity, and NH Berry curvature. In the presence of time reversal symmetry, a non-linear Hall effect can occur in systems without an inversion symmetry. One of the prominent candidates for detection of such Hall signals are Weyl semimetals. In this article, we investigate the Berry curvature induced second and third order Hall effect in multi-Weyl semimetals with topological charges $n =1, 2, 3$. We use low energy effective models to obtain general analytical expressions and discover the presence of a large Berry curvature dipole in multi-Weyl semimetals. We also study the Berry curvature dipole in a realistic tight-binding lattice model and observe two different kinds of variation with increasing topological charge -- these can be attributed to different underlying Berry curvature components. We provide estimates of the signatures of second harmonic of Hall signal in multi-Weyl semimetals, which can be detected experimentally. Furthermore, we predict the existence of a third order Hall signal in multi-Weyl semimetals. We derive the analytical expressions of Berry connection polarizability tensor, which is responsible for third order effects, using a low energy model and estimate the measurable conductivity. The study of non-Hermitian degeneracies -- called exceptional points -- has become an exciting frontier at the crossroads of optics, photonics, acoustics, and quantum physics. Here, we introduce the Newton polygon method as a general algebraic framework for characterizing and tuning exceptional points. These polygons were first described by Isaac Newton in 1676 and are conventionally used in algebraic geometry, with deep roots in various topics in modern mathematics. We have found their surprising connection to non-Hermitian physics. We propose and illustrate how the Newton polygon method can enable the prediction of higher-order exceptional points, using a recently experimentally realized optical system. Using the paradigmatic Hatano-Nelson model, we demonstrate how our Newton Polygon method can be used to predict the presence of the non-Hermitian skin effect. As further application of our framework, we show the presence of tunable exceptional points of various orders in $PT$-symmetric one-dimensional models. We further extend our method to study exceptional points in higher number of variables and demonstrate that it can reveal rich anisotropic behaviour around such degeneracies. Multifold fermion systems feature free fermionic excitations, which have no counterparts in high-energy physics, and exhibit several unconventional properties. Using first-principles calculations, we predict that strain engineering can be used to control the distribution of topological charges in transition metal silicide candidate CoSi, hosting multifold fermions. We demonstrate that breaking the rotational symmetry of the system, by choosing a suitable strain, destroys the multifold fermions, and at the same time results in the creation of Weyl points. We introduce a low energy effective model to complement the results obtained from density functional calculations. Non-Hermitian topological systems are the newest additions to the growing field of topological matter. In this work, we report of the light-driven exceptional physics in a multi-Weyl semi-metal. The driving is not only a key ingredient to control the position of the exceptional contours (ECs), light also has the ability to generate new ECs. Interestingly, we also demonstrate topological charge distribution and Lifshitz transition, which are controllable by the driving field in such generated ECs. We describe the process of electron condensation into a localized state in a structureless jellium that is coupled to a finite cavity. It is shown that there exists a temperature T_0 below which electrons within the jellium localize. Non-Hermitian topological phases have gained widespread interest due to their unconventional properties, which have no Hermitian counterparts. In this work, we propose to use machine learning to identify and predict non-Hermitian topological phases, based on their winding number. We consider two examples -- non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and its generalized version in one dimension and non-Hermitian nodal line semimetal in three dimensions -- to demonstrate the use of neural networks to accurately characterize the topological phases. We show that for the one dimensional model, a fully connected neural network gives an accuracy greater than 99.9\%, and is robust to the introduction of disorder. Understanding the electronic behavior of Ni$^{2+}$ in a square planar environment of oxygen is the key to unravel the origin of the recently discovered superconductivity in the hole doped nickelate Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$. To identify the major similarities/dissimilarities between nickelate and cuprate superconductivity, the study of the electronic structure of Ni$^{2+}$ and Cu$^{2+}$ in an identical square planar environment is essential. In order to address these questions, we investigate the electronic structure of Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ and Ni doped Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ single crystals containing (Cu/Ni)O$_4$ square planar units. Our polarization dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments for Ni in Sr$_2$Cu$_{0.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$O$_3$ have revealed very large orbital polarization, which is a characteristic feature of high $T_c$ cuprate. This arises due to the low spin $S$=0 configuration with two holes in Ni 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals - in contrast to the expected high spin $S$=1 state from Hund's first rule. The presence of such $S$=0 Ni$^{2+}$ in hole doped nickelate would be analogous to the Zhang Rice singlet. However, the Mott Hubbard insulating nature of the NiO$_4$ unit would point towards a different electronic phase space of nickelates, compared to high $T_c$ cuprates., Comment: 4 Figures

Using Floquet theory, we investigate the effect of light on triple fold fermions. We study a low energy model as well as a simplified tight binding model under illumination. We find that the three fold degeneracy remains symmetry protected even after applying light if the original band structure is rotationally symmetric around the degeneracy. Otherwise, light can lift the degeneracy and open up a gap. We further investigate the effect of light on the topological Fermi arcs by means of numerical computations. The changes caused by illumination are reflected in experimentally detectable signatures, such as the anomalous Hall conductivity, which we calculate., Comment: Published version

Recently discovered 2M phase of bulk WS$_2$ was observed to exhibit superconductivity with a critical temperature of 8.8 K, the highest reported among superconducting transition metal dichalcogenides. Also predicted to support protected surface states, it could be a potential topological superconductor. In the present study, we perform a detailed first-principles analysis of bulk and bilayer 2M WS$_2$. We report a comprehensive investigation of the bulk phase, comparing structural and electronic properties obtained from different exchange correlation functionals to the experimentally reported values. By calculation of the $Z_2$ invariant and surface states, we give support for its non-trivial band nature. Based on the insights gained from the analysis of the bulk phase, we predict bilayer 2M WS$_2$ as a new two-dimensional topological material. We demonstrate its dynamical stability from first-principles phonon computations and present its electronic properties, highlighting the band inversions between the W $d$ and S $p$ states. By means of $Z_2$ invariant computations and a calculation of the edge states, we show that bilayer 2M WS$_2$ exhibits protected, robust edge states. The broken inversion symmetry in this newly proposed bilayer also leads to the presence of Berry curvature dipole and resulting non-linear responses. We compute the Berry curvature distribution and the dipole as a function of Fermi energy. We propose that BCD signals, which are absent in the centrosymmetric bulk 2M WS$_2$, can be signatures of the bilayer. We present a theoretical study of the structure and functionality of ferroelastic domain walls in tungsten trioxide, WO$_3$. WO$_3$ has a rich structural phase diagram, with the stability and properties of the various structural phases strongly affected both by temperature and by electron doping. The existence of superconductivity is of particular interest, with the underlying mechanism as of now not well understood. In addition, reports of enhanced superconductivity at structural domain walls are particularly intriguing. Focusing specifically on the orthorhombic $\beta$ phase, we calculate the structure and properties of the domain walls both with and without electron doping. We use two theoretical approaches: Landau-Ginzburg theory, with free energies constructed from symmetry considerations and parameters extracted from our first-principles density functional calculations, and direct calculation using large-scale, GPU-enabled density functional theory. We find that the structure of the $\beta$-phase domain walls resembles that of the bulk tetragonal $\alpha_1$ phase, and that the electronic charge tends to accumulate at the walls. Motivated by this finding, we perform ab initio computations of electron-phonon coupling in the bulk $\alpha_1$ structure and extract the superconducting critical temperatures , $T_c$, within Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory. We report on low-energy electronic structure and electronic correlations of K$_{0.65}$RhO$_2$, studied using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) technique and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We observe a highly correlated hole pocket on the Fermi surface. We further notice that the correlations are momentum dependent. Most importantly, two $kinks$ at binding energies of 75 meV and 195 meV have been observed from the band dispersion in the vicinity of the Fermi level. While the low energy $kink$ at 75 meV can be understood as a result of the electron-phonon interaction, the presence of high energy $kink$ at 195 meV is totally a new discovery of this system leading to an anomalous band renormalization. Based on systematic analysis of our experimental data, we propose high frequency bosonic excitations as a plausible origin of the high energy anomaly. Further, we notice that the high energy anomaly has important implications in obtaining the colossal thermoelectric power of K$_{0.65}$RhO$_2$., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

We propose and show that application of light leads to an intriguing platform for controlling exceptional points in non-Hermitian topological systems. We demonstrate our proposal using three different non-Hermitian systems -- nodal line semimetals, semi-Dirac semimetals and Dirac semimetals -- and show that using illumination with light one can engineer the positions and stability of exceptional points. Recently, many novel and exotic phases have been proposed by considering the role of topology in non-Hermitian systems, and their emergent properties are of wide current interest. In this work we propose the non-Hermitian generalization of semi-Dirac semimetals, which feature a linear dispersion along one momentum direction and a quadratic one along the other. We study the topological phase transitions in such two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetals in the presence of a particle gain-and-loss term. We show that such a non-Hermitian term creates exceptional points originating out of each semi-Dirac point. We map out the topological phase diagram of our model, using winding number and vorticity as topological invariants of the system. By means of numerical and analytical calculations, we examine the nature of edge states for different types of semi-Dirac models and establish bulk-boundary correspondence and absence of the non-Hermitian skin effect, in one class. On the other hand, for other classes of semi-Dirac models with asymmetric hopping, we restore the non-Hermitian skin effect, an anomalous feature usually present in non-Hermitian topological systems., Comment: To appear in J. Most recent observation of topological Fermi arcs on the surface of manyfold degenerate B20 systems, CoSi and RhSi, have attracted enormous research interests. Although an another isostructural system, FeSi, has been predicted to show bulk chiral fermions, it is yet to be clear theoretically and as well experimentally that whether FeSi possesses the topological surface Fermi arcs associated with the exotic chiral fermions in vicinity of the Fermi level. In this contribution, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), we present the low-energy electronic structure of FeSi. We further report the surface state calculations to provide insights into the surface band structure of FeSi near the Fermi level. Unlike in CoSi or RhSi, FeSi has no topological Fermi arcs near the Fermi level as confirmed both from ARPES and surface state calculations. Further, the ARPES data show spin-orbit coupling (SOC) band splitting of 40 meV, which is in good agreement with bulk band structure calculations. We noticed an anomalous temperature dependent resistivity in FeSi which can be understood through the electron-phonon interactions as we find a Debye energy of 80 meV from the ARPES data., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We systematically investigate the effect of strain and doping on the polar metal phase in lithium osmate, LiOsO$_3$, using first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that the polar metal phase in LiOsO$_3$ can be controlled by biaxial strain. Based on density functional calculations, we show that a compressive biaxial strain enhances the stability of the polar $R3c$ phase. On the other hand, a tensile biaxial strain favors the centrosymmetric $R\overline{3}c$ structure. Thus, strain emerges as a promising control parameter over polar metallicity in this material. We uncover a strain-driven quantum phase transition under tensile strain, and highlight intriguing properties that could emerge in the vicinity of this polar to non-polar metal transition. We examine the effect of charge doping on the polar metal phase. By means of electrostatic doping as well as supercell calculations, we find that screening from additional charge carriers, expected to suppress the polar distortions, have only a small effect on them. Rather remarkably, and in contrast to conventional ferroelectrics, the polar metal phase in LiOsO$_3$ remains robust against charge doping up to large doping values., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

We study the effects of temperature on the topological nature of ZrTe$_5$, which sits near the phase boundary between strong and weak topological insulating orders. Using first-principles calculations, we show that the band gap and the topological indices of ZrTe$_5$ are extremely sensitive to thermal expansion, and that the electron-phonon interaction accounts for more than a third of the total temperature-dependent effects in ZrTe$_5$. We find that the temperature dependence of the band gap has an opposite sign in the strong and weak topological insulator phases. Based on this insight, we propose a robust and unambiguous method to determine the topological nature of any given sample of ZrTe$_5$: if the band gap decreases with temperature it is a strong topological insulator, and if it increases with temperature it is a weak topological insulator. An analogous strategy is expected to be generally applicable to other materials and to become particularly important in the vicinity of topological phase boundaries where other methods provide ambiguous results., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

WTe2, as a type-II Weyl semimetal, has 2D Fermi arcs on the (001) surface in the bulk and 1D helical edge states in its monolayer. These features have recently attracted wide attention in condensed matter physics. However, in the intermediate regime between the bulk and monolayer, the edge states have not been resolved owing to its closed band gap which makes the bulk states dominant. Here, we report the signatures of the edge superconductivity by superconducting quantum interference measurements in multilayer WTe2 Josephson junctions and we directly map the localized supercurrent. In thick WTe2 (~60 nm), the supercurrent is uniformly distributed by bulk states with symmetric Josephson effect ($\left|I_c^+(B)\right|=\left|I_c^-(B)\right|$). In thin WTe2 (10 nm), however, the supercurrent becomes confined to the edge and its width reaches up to 1.4 um and exhibits non-symmetric behavior $\left|I_c^+(B)\right|\neq \left|I_c^-(B)\right|$. The ability to tune the edge domination by changing thickness and the edge superconductivity establishes WTe2 as a promising topological system with exotic quantum phases and a rich physics., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures
