Abstract

Material gathered from education, religion, medicine and related fields comprises this practical approach to dealing with human development. The unity underlying the multiplicity of ways of growth (150 educational methods or systems) is a recurrent theme. This unity transcends the seemingly diverse intentions of education, psychiatry, and religion. The author contends that close scrutiny may uncover enough of a meeting ground to warrant the ambition of a unified science and art of human change. Indeed, a consistent view of man's development will fuse the three currently separated disciplines. The author suggests a phenomenological approach to practical ways of personal growth which provides an experiential meeting ground for diverse techniques, exercises and procedures that would contribute to the unfolding of man. His approach is intended to elucidate two things: (1) the unity of secular and and religious views concerning the process of the unfolding of man; and (2) the unity of various methods of achieving human growth from the standpoint of experiences these methods elicit, rather than from their external descriptions. Abstract

Fuzzy pharmacology is a term coined to represent the application of fuzzy logic and fuzzy set theory to pharmacological problems. Fuzzy logic is the science of reasoning, thinking and inference that recognizes and uses the real world phenomenon that everything is a matter of degree. It is an extension of binary logic that is able to deal with complex systems because it does not require crisp definitions and distinctions for the system components. In pharmacology, fuzzy modeling has been used for the mechanical control of drug delivery in surgical settings, and work has begun evaluating its use in other pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic applications. Fuzzy pharmacology is an emerging field that, based on these initial explorations, warrants further investigation.

48. The Patriarchal Mind as the Ignored Root of Interpersonal and Social Pathologies.

Abstract

The article begins with an integrative theory of neurosis and with the notion of the “patriarchal mind,” which I conceive as the psycho-social foundation of what we call “civilisation” and proceed to characterize as a despotic and repressive activity of the father on the mother and on the child in the family, and also of an analogous relation between the intellect on the emotional and on the instinctual sub-selves in the individual mind. Next, I propose that patriarchy entails four interrelated problems: (1) violent authority; (2) the eclipse of caring; (3) the repression of instinct; and (4) the invalidation of intuition; and point out that since these are evident in our well-recognized social problems, these may be traced down to the “patriarchal complex” that in turn defines patriarchal society. Finally, I develop the idea that not only is the patriarchal mind is embodied in each of the known interpersonal or character pathologies, but that each of these pathologies contributes to the systemic and cultural presence of the patriarchal mind. The corollary of this analysis is that the healing of both our interpersonal and social pathologies will depend on the healing of the patriarchal mind, which is conceivably possible to bring about through a specially designed education oriented to the balanced development of “three-brained beings,” in whom a balance has been achieved between the intellectual, emotional, and instinctive sub-selves that constitute our mind. Abstract

Because the discipline of economics is presented as an almost mathematical science, even though this is asserted through unsustainable simplifications, I welcome alternative approaches like considering economics to be part of an environmental science or conceiving a future humanist economics. Though I am not an economist, I will limit my contribution in these pages to a subject that I have already investigated, that of patriarchal society, hoping that by drawing attention to the patriarchal mindset as the background of our dysfunctional economic life, I am not only contributing to what could be a better theoretical conception of economic life, but that I also raise awareness among those who are simply interested in what is happening in the world around us., Porque se presenta la disciplina de la economía como una ciencia casi matemática, aunque ello se logre a través de simplificaciones insostenibles, celebro planteamientos alternativos como el de considerar la economía parte de una ciencia del ambiente o concebir una futura economía humanista. Sin ser un economista, sin embargo, limitaré mi contribución en estas páginas a un tema que ya he investigado, el de la sociedad patricarcal, esperando que al llamar la atención hacia la mente patriarcal como trasfondo de nuestra vida económica disfuncional no sólo esté contribuyendo a lo que pueda ser una mejor concepción teórica de la vida económica, sino que sirva al despertar de la conciencia de quienes simplemente se interesan en lo que ocurre en el mundo que nos rodea.
