Abstract

The article describes the case of an eight-year old spayed female Abyssinian cat that died due to hepatoblastoma. Hsitopathological findings revealed the presence of neoplastic cells with eosonophilic cytoplasm and the oval nucleus of the tumor's short spindle cells. Immunohistochemical results showed the expression of neuroectodermal or neurodocrine markers in the neoplastic cells, which were found positive for CD56/neural cell adhesion molecule and for biliary epithelial markers.

Abstract

The article investigates the association between dental caries and diabetes. The authors examined 68 mice and found that dental lesions increase with age among diabetic mice at a higher rate compared with nondiabetic mice. Severity of dental caries was also higher among the diabetic group. They also report that dental caries led to bacterial gingivitis and pulpitis. They conclude that dental caries and diabetes have a strong connection, but in their particular study, periodontal disease is believed to be a secondary change resulting from dental caries.

48. A new diabetic strain of rat (WBN/Kob)

Abstract

A new, spontaneously occurring diabetic syndrome has been observed in the aged males of an inbred strain of Wistar rats, WBN/Kob. The main clinical sign, glycosuria, was first detected at about 60 weeks of age, and thereafter some animals developed hyperlipidaemia and gradual emaciation. Prior to the onset of glucosuria, male rats showed impaired glucose tolerance after a glucose load at 21 weeks of age. The histopathologic lesions of the pancreas in the diabetic males consisted of multifocal fibrosis, decrease in number and size of islets and atrophy of exocrine tissue. Multifocal inflammatory foci of varying stages were the main pancreatic lesion in prediabetic male rats. This inflammatory change was detected even in 12-week-old rats and tended to occur around the islets. Therefore focal fibrosis and the decrease in the number and size of islets were considered to result from post-inflammatory scarring. The maturity-onset of this syndrome and the impaired glucose tolerance in younger animals suggested that diabetes mellitus of this rat strain is insulin-independent type II. However, the histological lesions of the pancreas were somewhat different from previous reports of both type I and II diabetes mellitus in man and animals.

50. Non-functional pituitary chromophobe adenoma in a calf

Abstract

A 5-month-old male calf showed neurological signs, including circling, inco-ordination, depression, blindness and eventual recumbency. On necropsy, a mass measuring 3.5x4x5x5 cm was found at the base of the brain, at the level of the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus and optic nerves were compressed by the dorsally expanding mass. Non-functional pituitary chromophobe adenoma was diagnosed from histochemical, immunohistochemical phobe adenoma was diagnosed from histochemical, immunohistochemical and electron microscopical findings.
