By Jacob Napieralski. In 2021, metro Detroit was hit with a rainstorm so severe that President Joe Biden issued a major disaster declaration at state officials’ request. Nearly 8 inches of rain fell within 24 hours, closing every major freeway and causing massive damage to homes and businesses. The storm was of a severity historically seen in Detroit every 500 to 1,000 years.

Identity is a complex concept, as it is not solely a matter of an individual’s perception of oneself, but also influenced by how others perceive them. This is the view of Patrick Charaudeau, who defines identity as “a complex matter, as it is not only a matter of self, but also a matter of others, or more precisely, a matter of self through the eyes of others”. To gain insight into the construction of identity among football supporters, particularly those of the Polish National Team, this study aims to analyze the discourse of online football supporters during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Specifically, the study focuses on the comments made by fans on the Facebook page Łączy nas piłka. The research will examine how a collective identity is formed through the comments made by supporters in a virtual cultural reality. The analysis will be based on the various comments made by online users, including judgments, encouragements, replies, insults, and internet mèmes. The comments section of Łączy nas piłka serves as the fertile ground for linguistic exchanges where the online football supporters express their discourse, marked by a diverse range of emotions and values that are commonly shared among the fans of the Polish National Team. Through this study, we aim to present the discourse of online football supporters, which reflects the manifestation of collective identity among football supporters. By examining the language used by these supporters in online discourse, we can gain insights into how collective identities are formed and expressed in the digital realm.

OBJECTIVE:To assess the onset of ocrelizumab efficacy on brain MRI measures of disease activity in the phase II study in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), and relapse rate in the pooled phase III studies in relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS). METHODS:Brain MRI activity was determined in the phase II trial at monthly intervals in patients with RRMS receiving placebo, ocrelizumab (600 mg), or intramuscular interferon (IFN) β-1a (30 μg). Annualized relapse rate (ARR; over various epochs) and time to first relapse were analyzed in the pooled population of the phase III OPERA (A Study of Ocrelizumab in Comparison With Interferon Beta-1a [Rebif] in Participants With Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis) I and OPERA II trials in patients with RMS receiving ocrelizumab (600 mg) or subcutaneous IFN-β-1a (44 μg). RESULTS:In patients with RRMS, ocrelizumab reduced the number of new T1 gadolinium-enhancing lesions by week 4 vs placebo (p = 0.042) and by week 8 vs intramuscular IFN-β-1a (p < 0.001). Ocrelizumab also reduced the number of new or enlarging T2 lesions appearing between weeks 4 and 8 vs both placebo and IFN-β-1a (both p < 0.001). In patients with RMS, ocrelizumab significantly reduced ARR (p = 0.005) and the probability of time to first protocol-defined relapse (p = 0.014) vs subcutaneous IFN-β-1a within the first 8 weeks. CONCLUSION:Epoch analysis of MRI-measured lesion activity in the phase II study and relapse rate in the phase III studies consistently revealed a rapid suppression of acute MRI and clinical disease activity following treatment initiation with ocrelizumab in patients with RRMS and RMS, respectively. CLASSIFICATION OF EVIDENCE:This study provides Class II evidence that for patients with RRMS and RMS, ocrelizumab suppressed MRI activity within 4 weeks and clinical disease activity within 8 weeks.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize scientific work. At the same time, the availability of large language models, coupled with high publication pressure, often distorts the way AI tools are used. This study highlights not only the potential of selected contemporary tools, but also the traps and risks that come with using AI tools in the preparation of scientific papers. Wise use of AI techniques can improve the efficiency of work, but an unprofessional approach results in journal clogging and devaluation of the traditional form of sharing scientific achievements. First predicted by Richtmyer in 1960 and experimentally confirmed by Meshkov in 1969, the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) is crucial in fields such as physics, astrophysics, inertial confinement fusion and high-energy-density physics. These disciplines often deal with strong shocks moving through condensed materials or high-pressure plasmas that exhibit non-ideal equations of state (EoS), thus requiring theoretical models with realistic fluid EoS for accurate RMI simulations. Approximate formulae for asymptotic growth rates, like those proposed by Richtmyer, are helpful but rely on heuristic prescriptions for compressible materials. These prescriptions can sometimes approximate the RMI growth rate well, but their accuracy remains uncertain without exact solutions, as the fully compressible RMI growth rate is influenced by both vorticity deposited during shock refraction and multiple sonic wave refractions. This study advances previous work by presenting an analytic, fully compressible theory of RMI for reflected shocks with arbitrary EoS. It compares theoretical predictions with heuristic prescriptions using ideal gas, van der Waals gas and three-term constitutive equations for simple metals, the latter being analysed with detailed and simplified ideal-gas-like EoS. We additionally offer an alternative explicit approximate formula for the asymptotic growth rate. The comprehensive model also incorporates the effects of constant-amplitude acoustic waves at the interface, associated with the D'yakov–Kontorovich instability in shocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this article is to study the relations between a borrowing and its various native equivalents in the form of the explanatory text between them. The borrowing chosen for analysis is the term designating what is seen as a new threat to public health, i.e. binge drinking, which came to prominence in English-speaking countries. Typically, this is presented in the French, Polish and Czech corpus analyzed in various forms such as: binge drinking, which may be translated as [native equivalent]. It is shown that a whole range of presentations is possible, from the most specific to the most general and it is argued that the type of presentation is indicative of the degree of lexicalization of the native equivalent.

Notre article aborde la question des appellations non officielles des équipes de football, qui tout en existant à côté des appellations officielles de celles-ci, témoignent souvent des sentiments forts de leurs supporters et de leurs adversaires. Par exemple, à côté de la dénomination officielle, le Futbol Club Barcelona est souvent désigné par les médias au moyen des noms métonymiques évoquant les couleurs du club, Blaugranes ou Azulgranas, mais aussi par un nom plus affectif, Barça. Or, ce même club se voit parfois attribuer une dénomination dépréciative, culés, venant de cul ‘derrière’ en catalan, ou encore polacos ‘Polonais’ (nom péjoratif par lequel les Espagnols désignent les Catalans). Notre analyse des formes, du contenu et des rôles des appellations officieuses d’un certain nombre d’équipes de football (françaises, espagnoles et polonaises) permet de proposer une nette distinction entre les surnoms et les sobriquets, deux catégories de chrématonymes bien distinctes.

Periodic oxygen (O2) limitation in humid terrestrial soils likely influences microbial composition, but whether communities share similar responses in disparate environments remains unclear. To test if specific microbial taxa share consistent responses to anoxia in radically different soils, we incubated a rainforest Oxisol and cropland Mollisol under cyclic, time-varying anoxic/oxic cycles in the laboratory. Both soils are known to experience anoxic periods of days to weeks under field conditions; our incubation treatments consisted of anoxic periods of 0, 2, 4, 8, or 12 d followed by 4 d of oxic conditions, repeated for a total of 384 d. Taxa measured by 16S rRNA gene sequences after 48 d and 384 d of experimental treatments varied strongly with increasing anoxic period duration, and responses to anoxia often differed between soils at multiple taxonomic levels. Only 19% of the 30,356 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) occurred in both soils, and most OTUs did not respond consistently to O2 treatments. Notre étude porte sur le procédé lexicogénique de forme qu’est le verlan et sa relation avec la néologie. En se basant sur les travaux des linguistes (Walter 1984, Méla 1988, Goudaillier 1996 et autres) nous essayerons de faire un bilan sur l’état actuel des recherches sur le verlan et de proposer une typologie actualisée basée sur les textes de rap récents (2019). Nous essayerons de nous pencher sur les études concernant la néologie (Darmesteter 1887, Tournier 2009, Sablayrolles 2019) afin de situer (ou exclure ?) le verlan des recherches portant sur la néologie. Ensuite il sera question de situer le verlan parmi les procédés responsables pour la création néologique telles qu’on les retrouve dans le tableau des matrices lexicogéniques de Sablayrolles.

Emotions are commonly considered to be the most expressive of everyday human experiences, giving a sense of fullness and reality of life. The ability to recognize human emotions as a manifestation of higher intelligence is desirable feature. There are several models of emotional experience that can become the basis for building a universal emotional recognition system. In this article, we check the correctness of the designed emotional model. We check the evaluation of the system’s operation by human observers.

The article proposes an analysis of the possible architectures of synchronous machines with an ability to operate at high temperatures of over 200°C in their environment. Two machine principles have been considered: the permanent magnet synchronous machine and the synchronous reluctance machine. The numerical analyses are carried out with 3D-coupled electromagnetic-fluid-thermal models; the electromagnetic one provides the local losses that give the input data to the coupled thermal-fluid analysis model for computing the temperatures inside the machines. The simulation results are used for estimating the temperature limit of each machine architecture, considering the characteristics of their critical parts.

The Geosciences Institute for Research and Education at the University of Michigan-Dearborn has been an example of a successful and effective model in increasing the participation of underrepresented groups in the geosciences. The program emphasizes involving middle school and at-risk high school students from the Detroit area public schools, along with their teachers in geoscience research projects, through a series of spring and summer workshops. The workshops introduce students to the geosciences by emphasizing how geology can be used as a tool to solve community-based environmental problems. Students work alongside their teachers and university faculty on projects ranging from an assessment of brownfield sites in southwestern Detroit to the installation of groundwater monitoring wells to the evaluation of how former land use is impacting groundwater and surface water quality. Spring workshops focused on students from three African-centered middle schools in Detroit, while the summer workshops focused more on middle school and high school teacher training, but included a small group of middle school and high school students. Instruments used to evaluate the effectiveness of the workshops included the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument, the Geoscience Concept Inventory, and survey questions from the Watershed Task. Pre- and postworkshop questionnaires and separate teacher-student focus groups demonstrate that we have not only increased student awareness of the geosciences, but we have also motivated students to pursue career opportunities in science. For example, more than half of the students completing the workshop (boys and girls alike) have expressed a strong interest in pursuing a career in the geosciences. Since its inception in 2005, we have reached over 100 middle and high school students, and 75 teachers. During this same period, the Earth Science major at the University of Michigan-Dearborn has tripled in size, and we have quadrupled the number of minority students taking introductory geology courses.
