28. Researching accounting changes in a period of change : theories and methods of accounting history

Abstract

This thesis consists of ten papers published between 1996 and 2006 in the field of accounting history. Six of the papers are conceptual or methodological in nature, and the other four are specific studies of episodes from accountings' past. The conceptual papers advocate a critical and interpretive approach to historical accounting research, with a balance between theory and evidence. Research using primary archival material is supported, but accounting historians need to be aware that the narratives they develop from their evidence are not neutral and objective, but rather reflect implicit or explicit theoretical positions. These positions may go so far as to influence what the historian considers to be evidence, the forms of explanation that are preferred, and the extent to which general theories are used to understand specific cases. The papers provide support for the 'New Accounting History' that emerged in the 1970s and 1980s, and include a review of a substantial body of historical literature in accounting, demonstrating the diversity of theories and methods that are being used by accounting historians. Two of the specific studies address the relationship between accounting and economics. Institutionally, accounting education and research in Britain drew heavily on economic thinking, even though many economists had a disdainful attitude to accounting. However, a systematic 'business economics' did not emerge in Britain. A study of auditor liability shows the significance of law to the limitation of liability for auditors, while an examination of the relationship between a parent company and its subsidiaries in the inter-war years provides insights into the personal nature of management, and the weak nature of accounting controls, in Britain at that time. The studies all demonstrate the use of theory as a framing device for narrative histories of accounting.

Abstract

We respond to the call for more research into the entanglement between multiple (including non-visual and non-verbal) modes of communication within organizations by exploring the relationships between rhetoric and materiality. We draw on archival sources concerning the Founder’s Building at Royal Holloway College (1874–1897). We discuss the building as a multimodal material object, inherently multiple, fluid and messy: the Founder’s Building is open to multiple encounters with sociality through multiple modes of communication. We find that such ‘messiness’ explains how the spatial, aural, sensual and visual modes embedded in a material object engage with each other, as well as with other visual, verbal and numerical modes, in the crafting of rhetoric: different modes sustain and oppose each other and evolve through absences and presences. We find that the messiness of material objects explains the engagement between rhetoric and materiality: materiality can limit or augment rhetoric, and materiality and rhetoric can co-evolve when the ‘rhetors’ (such as the founder and the governors of the College) and their audiences (such as students, visitors and tax authorities) attempt to transform the object (the Founder’s Building) into always something else, even an absent object.

Abstract

Objective: To provide consensus on how to plan, organize and implement exercise-based injury prevention program (IPP) in sports. Design: Delphi. Setting: LimeSurvey platform. Participants: Experienced sports physical therapists from the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy member countries. Main outcome measures: Factors related to sports IPP planning, organization and implementation. Results: We included 305 participants from 32 countries. IPP planning should be based on an athlete's injury history, on pre-season screening results, and on injury rates (respectively, 98%, 92%, 89% agreement). In total 97% participants agreed that IPP organization should depend on the athlete's age, 93% on the competition level, and 93% on the availability of low-cost materials. It was agreed that IPP should mainly be implemented in warm-up sessions delivered by the head or strength/conditioning coach, with physical training sessions and individual physical therapy sessions (respectively, 94%, 92%, 90% agreement). Conclusion: Strong consensus was reached on (1) IPP based on the athlete's injury history, pre-season screening and evidence-based sports-specific injury rates; (2) IPP organization based on the athlete's age, competition level, and the availability of low-cost materials and (3) IPP implementation focussing on warm-up sessions implemented by the strength/conditioning coach, and/or individual prevention sessions by the physical therapist.
