Racism is embedded in society, and higher education is an important structure for patterning economic and health outcomes. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were founded on antiracism while predominantly White institutions (PWIs) were often founded on white supremacy. This contrast provides an opportunity to study the association between structural racism and health among Black Americans. We used the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) to estimate the long-term causal effect of attending an HBCU (vs. PWI) on depressive symptoms among Black students in the United States from 1994–2018. While we found no overall association with attending an HBCU (vs. PWI) on depressive symptoms, we found that this association varied by baseline mental health and region, and across time. For example, among those who attended high school outside of the South, HBCU attendance was protective against depressive symptoms 7 years later, and the association was strongest for those with higher baseline depressive symptoms. We recommend equitable state and federal funding for HBCUs, and that PWIs implement and evaluate antiracist policies to improve mental health of Black students.

Dinitrogen (N2) fixation is the major source of reactive nitrogen in the ocean and has been considered to occur specifically in low-latitude oligotrophic oceans. Recent studies have shown that N2 fixation also occurs in the polar regions and thus is a global process, although the physiological and ecological characteristics of polar diazotrophs are not yet known. Here, we successfully reconstructed diazotroph genomes, including that of cyanobacterium UCYN-A (Candidatus ‘Atelocyanobacterium thalassa’), from metagenome data corresponding to 111 samples isolated from the Arctic Ocean. These diazotrophs were highly abundant in the Arctic Ocean (max., 1.28% of the total microbial community), suggesting that they have important roles in the Arctic ecosystem and biogeochemical cycles. Further, we show that diazotrophs within genera Arcobacter, Psychromonas, and Oceanobacter are prevalent in the 2 fixation. Diazotrophs in the Arctic Ocean were either Arctic-endemic or cosmopolitan species from their global distribution patterns. Arctic-endemic diazotrophs, including Arctic UCYN-A, were similar to low-latitude-endemic and cosmopolitan diazotrophs in genome-wide function, however, they had unique gene sets (e.g., diverse aromatics degradation genes), suggesting adaptations to Arctic-specific conditions. Cosmopolitan diazotrophs were generally non-cyanobacteria and commonly had the gene that encodes the cold-inducible RNA chaperone, which presumably makes their survival possible even in deep, cold waters of global ocean and polar surface waters. This study shows global distribution pattern of diazotrophs with their genomes and provides clues to answering the question of how diazotrophs can inhabit polar waters.

Terrestrial glacial records from the Patagonian Andes and New Zealand Alps document quasi-synchronous southern hemisphere-wide glacier advances during the late Quaternary. Although detailed, these records are inherently incomplete. Here, we provide a continuous marine record of Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) extent over a complete glacial/interglacial cycle back to the previous glacial (~140 ka). Sediment core MR16-09 PC03, located at 46° S and ~150 km offshore Chile, received high terrestrial sediment input when the PIS advanced westward. We use biomarkers, foraminiferal oxygen isotopes, and major element data for reconstructing terrestrial sediment and freshwater input related to PIS variations. Our sediment record documents four major intervals of general PIS advance, during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 (135 – 140 ka), late MIS 5 (~85 – 95 ka), MIS 4 (~60 – 70 ka) and late MIS 3 to MIS 2 (~18 – 40 ka). These higher terrigenous input intervals occur during sea-level low stands when the western PIS covered most of the Chilean fjords which today retain glaciofluvial sediments. Superimposed, high amplitude phases of enhanced sediment supply reoccur at millennial time scales and reflect marine-based phases of the PIS with direct sediment discharge to the continental slope. We assign the late MIS 3 to MIS 2 phases and, by inference, also older advances to Antarctic stadials, consistent with the terrestrial record. Concomitantly, we observe enhanced meltwater release and conclude that the temperature-controlled PIS advances during southern hemisphere cold phases were likely reinforced by higher precipitation through enhanced westerly winds at the northwestern margin of the PIS.

Climate change impacts are pronounced at high latitudes, where warming, reduced sea-ice-cover, and ocean acidification affect marine ecosystems. We review climate change impacts on two major gateways into the Arctic: the Bering and Chukchi seas in the Pacific and the Barents Sea and Fram Strait in the Atlantic. We present scenarios of how changes in the physical environment and prey resources may affect commercial fish populations and fisheries in these high-latitude systems to help managers and stakeholders think about possible futures. Predicted impacts include shifts in the spatial distribution of boreal species, a shift from larger, lipid-rich zooplankton to smaller, less nutritious prey, with detrimental effects on fishes that depend on high-lipid prey for overwinter survival, shifts from benthic- to pelagic-dominated food webs with implications for upper trophic levels, and reduced survival of commercially important shellfish in waters that are increasingly acidic. Predicted changes are expected to result in disruptions to existing fisheries, the emergence of new fisheries, new challenges for managing transboundary stocks, and possible conflicts among resource users. Some impacts may be irreversible, more severe, or occur more frequently under anthropogenic climate change than impacts associated with natural variability, posing additional management challenges.

The mechanism that controls particulate organic carbon (POC) flux in the deep sea differs depending on the season and sea. The POC produced in the western subarctic North Pacific are known to be transported to the deep sea efficiently, but the direct relationship between the POC flux and physical processes is still unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effect of mesoscale eddies on POC flux in the western subarctic North Pacific. The seasonal and interannual variabilities of POC flux were investigated using data from a time-series sediment trap deployed at 4810 m at station K2 (47°N, 160°E) from 2005 to 2018. POC flux was high during May–November, appearing to reflect spring and fall blooms at the ocean surface. POC flux also showed interannual variability, with twelve peaks that were mostly affected by enhanced bloom just before the peak. Nine peaks of the twelve peaks were affected by mesoscale eddies, which enhanced bloom around K2 by extending the area with a high chlorophyll-a concentration along the coastal region into the offshore region, suggesting that mesoscale eddies strongly impact the interannual variability of POC flux at K2.

We studied time-series fluxes of radiolarian particles collected by two sediment traps deployed at the eastern (Sta. NAP12t) and western (Sta. CAP12t) sides of the Chukchi Borderland in the Chukchi Sea from 04 October 2012 to 18 September 2013. In order to elucidate the contribution of radiolarian skeletons to the biogenic silica flux, a three-dimensional (3D) imaging technique using microfocus X-ray computed tomography (MXCT) was applied to radiolarian siliceous skeletons. We calculated volumes of individual radiolarian skeletons accurately using a 3D model of them, thereby estimating the mass of silica for each radiolarian species. The time-series fluxes of radiolarian abundance were combined with the mass of radiolarian silica and were transformed to estimate fluxes of radiolarian silica. As a result, we found that the main carrier of radiolarian silica in the western Arctic Ocean was represented by only two species; that is, Amphimelissa setosa (averages: 55.2 wt% at Sta. NAP12t, 70.8 wt% at Sta. CAP12t) and Spongotrochus glacialis (averages: 36.7 wt% at Sta. NAP12t, 23.2 wt% at Sta. CAP12t). The total radiolarian silica flux was usually higher in the eastern side than that in the western side of the Chukchi Borderland. The contribution of radiolarian silica to the biogenic silica flux was less than 10 wt% in general during the sampling duration, but occasionally reached 19.6–34.8 wt% during the open water season. This suggests that not only diatoms but also radiolarians make a significant contribution in driving the silica cycle in the Arctic Ocean.

Biosynthesis of hydrocarbons is a promising approach for the production of alternative sources of energy because of the emerging need to reduce global consumption of fossil fuels. However, the suitability of biogenic hydrocarbons as fuels is limited because their range of the number of carbon atoms is small, and/or they contain unsaturated carbon bonds. Here, we report that a marine phytoplankton, Dicrateria rotunda, collected from the western Arctic Ocean, can synthesize a series of saturated hydrocarbons (n-alkanes) from C10H22 to C38H78, which are categorized as petrol (C10–C15), diesel oils (C16–C20), and fuel oils (C21–C38). The observation that these n-alkanes were also produced by ten other cultivated strains of Dicrateria collected from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans suggests that this capability is a common characteristic of Dicrateria. We also identified that the total contents of the n-alkanes in the Arctic D. rotunda strain increased under dark and nitrogen-deficient conditions. The unique characteristic of D. rotunda could contribute to the development of a new approach for the biosynthesis of n-alkanes.

The Aleutian Low (AL) is one of the major atmospheric systems that determines environmental conditions during winter in the North Pacific Ocean, with impacts that affect the climates of both Asia and North America from mid- to high latitudes. However, the multi-centennial and longer scale behavior of the AL during the Holocene is not fully understood. In this study, AL variability since 7.5 ka was examined by applying the principal component analysis technique to published δ18O data derived from sedimentary calcite, peat, ice, and speleothem from western North America. The extracted Principal Component 1 (PC1) represents a dramatic change from the mid- to late Holocene, and appears to reflect long-term intensified AL related to interactions between orbitally-driven southward shift of the Westerly Jet (WJ) over East Asia and the northwestern Pacific, and intensification of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation. In contrast, PC2 is characterized by multi-centennial to millennial-scale oscillations, with a spatial loading pattern that suggests PC2 reflects AL intensity and position shifts. These oscillations are contemporaneous with both WJ latitude and/or the meandering path shifts over East Asia and solar activity change, suggesting that a decrease/increase in solar irradiance is related to AL variability via interactions with the WJ.

Nitrogen fixation is the primary source of reactive nitrogen in the ocean. Most ecological models do not predict nitrogen fixation in the Antarctic Ocean because of the low availability of iron and high abundance of nitrogen. Here we extensively examined nitrogen fixation in the Antarctic Ocean, and found substantial nitrogen fixation (maximum: 44.4 nmol N l−1 d−1) near the Antarctic coast, especially around ice-covered regions. The nitrogenase gene (nifH) was detected at all coastal stations, including stations where no nitrogen fixation was found. At the stations where nitrogen fixation was detected, the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium UCYN-A (Candidatus ‘Atelocyanobacterium thalassa’) dominated nifH gene expression, and the nifH sequence was identical to that of the major oligotype in tropical and subtropical oceans. Our results suggest that marine nitrogen fixation is a ubiquitous process in the global ocean, and that UCYN-A is the keystone species for making it possible. Observational evidence of cyanobacterial activity in the Antarctic Ocean suggests that nitrogen fixation could be a ubiquitous process in the global ocean.

Ocean acidification induced by the increase of anthropogenic CO2 emissions has a profound impact on marine organisms and biogeochemical processes.1 The response of marine microbial activities to ocean acidification might play a crucial role in the future evolution of air-sea fluxes of biogenic gases such as nitrous oxide (N2O), a strong greenhouse gas and the dominant stratospheric ozone-depleting substance.2 Here, we examine the response of N2O production from nitrification to acidification in a series of incubation experiments conducted in subtropical and subarctic western North Pacific. The experiments show that, when pH was reduced, the N2O production rate during nitrification measured at subarctic stations increased significantly whereas nitrification rates remained stable or decreased. Contrary to what was previously thought, these results suggest that the effect of ocean acidification on N2O production during nitrification and nitrification rates are likely uncoupled. Collectively these results suggest that, if seawater pH continues to decline at the same rate, ocean acidification could increase the marine N2O production during nitrification in subarctic North Pacific by 185 to 491% by the end of the century.

We present a global atlas of downcore foraminiferal oxygen and carbon isotope ratios available at https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.936747 (Mulitza et al., 2021). The database contains 2,108 published and previously unpublished stable isotope downcore records with 362,067 stable isotope values of various planktonic and benthic species of foraminifera from 1,265 sediment cores. Age constraints are provided by 6,153 uncalibrated radiocarbon ages from 598 (47 %) of the cores. Each stable isotope and radiocarbon series is provided in a separate netCDF file containing fundamental meta data as attributes. The data set can be managed and explored with the free software tool PaleoDataView. The atlas will provide important data for paleoceanographic analyses and compilations, site surveys, or for teaching marine stratigraphy. The database can be updated with new records as they are generated, providing a live ongoing resource into the future.

The Shimosa Group, middle- to late-Pleistocene sedimentary succession, has been the focus of stratigraphic attention because it is beneath the Tokyo metropolitan area of central Japan. It is also of palaeoclimatic significance because it contains important interglacial marine strata of the past 450,000 years. Since the marine strata of the Shimosa Group were formed in the fluvial, estuary, and shallow inner bay known as Palaeo-Tokyo Bay, few occurrences of marine microfossils, make it difficult to quantitatively reconstruct the palaeotemperatures. Here, we extracted long-chain alkenones from the core GS-UR-1 penetrating the Shimosa Group to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11. We found that the alkenone unsaturation ratio appears to reflect the sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of Palaeo-Tokyo Bays formed during MIS 5e, 7e, 9, and 11, which might be recorded around the peak of each interglacial period. The palaeo-SSTs during each interglacial period were 2–3 ℃ higher than the palaeo-SSTs of Tokyo Bay in the pre-industrial era, seemed to reach the similar level as the Holocene thermal maximum. We suggest that the LCA-based proxy, which has not been utilized hitherto in studies on the Shimosa Group, demonstrates its potential to provide palaeoclimatic and stratigraphic information.

In this study, intra-annual variation of near-inertial internal wave (NIW) in the Arctic Ocean is examined using year-round mooring in the Northwind Abyssal Plain. Our emphasis is on dynamical responses of NIW to local sea-ice variables such as concentration, draft, and drift. We obtained those using a coupling system of ice profiling sonar (IPS) and an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed at the top of the mooring. According to the wavelet spectrum, the inertial oscillation of ice drift becomes considerably strong during periods of ice formation and decay. Results show that the NIW amplitude in the upper part of the water column responds more sensitively to the sea-ice inertial oscillation than to the mean component of ice drift heading to the northwest. We also conducted an experiment with a mixed-layer slab model using the IPS-ADCP measured ice speed to examine the NIW generation responding to the ice-to-ocean stress. Experiment results suggest that the mixed-layer inertial oscillation is amplified in the early time of ice formation, through the ice-water resonance process. It is then concluded that the mixed-layer inertial current driven by ice drift is the primary driver of the enhanced NIW generation.

In recent years, marine ecosystems have changed due to the drastic sea ice reduction in the Arctic Ocean, but the relationship between copepod phenology and environmental drivers is unclear. To reveal the relationship, seasonal changes in the flux (abundance of swimmers), population structure, lipid accumulation and gonad maturation of four dominant copepods (Calanus hyperboreus, Metridia longa, Paraeuchaeta glacialis and Heterorhabdus norvegicus) were studied using a sediment trap deployed at a depth of 222 m in the Pacific-Arctic sector from October 2010 to September 2013. C. hyperboreus, mostly comprising copepodid stage 6 females (C6F), exhibited several peaks in flux in spring and autumn. C. hyperboreus C6Fs were dominated by lipid-rich specimens year-round, and gonad development was observed in these samples from February to April. The M. longa flux showed no clear seasonality. Gonad maturation of M. longa C6Fs occurred from February to September. P. glacialis flux exhibited two peaks in autumn of 2011 and 2012. In contrast to the former two species, lipid-rich, mature P. glacialis C6Fs occurred year-round. H. norvegicus copepodid stage 6 males (C6Ms) also occurred throughout the year, likely because H. norvegicus has functional feeding appendages, even in C6Ms. From generalized additive models, C. hyperboreus, M. longa and P. glacialis showed relationships with daytime length and/or sea ice concentrations, but the relationship patterns were different. These findings suggest that the response (e.g., vertical migration) to the environmental parameters could vary with species and the drastic sea ice reductions may affect the copepod phenology in the Pacific-Arctic sector.
