We have examined polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) excitation in a sample of 25 nearby face-on spiral galaxies using the ratio of mid-infrared PAH emission to dust mass. Within 11 of the galaxies, we found that the PAH excitation was straightforwardly linked to ultraviolet or mid-infrared star formation tracers, which, along with other results studying the relation of PAH emission to star formation, indicates that the PAHs are most strongly excited in dusty shells around the star forming regions. Within another 5 galaxies, the PAH emission is enhanced around star forming regions only at specific galactocentric radii. In 6 more galaxies, PAH excitation is more strongly correlated with the evolved stellar populations as traced by 3.6 micron emission. The results for the remaining 3 galaxies were ambiguous. The radial gradients of the PAH/dust ratios were generally not linked to log(O/H) gradients except when the log(O/H) gradients were relatively steep. Galaxies in which PAHs were excited by evolved stars had relatively high far-ultraviolet to mid-infrared ratios, indicating that variations in the link between PAH excitation and different stellar populations is linked to changes in dust attenuation within galaxies. Alternately, differences in morphology could make it more likely that PAHs are excited by evolved stars, as 5 of the 6 galaxies where this occurs are late-type flocculent spiral galaxies. We present maps of atomic carbon [CI](1-0) and [CI](2-1) at a linear resolution ~1kpc scale for a sample of one HII, six LINER, three Seyfert and five starburst galaxies observed with Herschel. We compare spatial distributions of two [CI] lines with that of CO(1-0) emission, and find that both [CI] lines distribute similarly to CO(1-0) emission in most galaxies. We present luminosity ratio maps of L'_[CI](1-0)/L'_CO(1-0), L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_CO(1-0), L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_[CI](1-0) (hereafter R_[CI]) and f_70/f_160. L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_CO(1-0), R_[CI] and f_70/f_160 are centrally peaked in starbursts; whereas remain relatively constant in LINERs, indicating that star-forming activity can enhance carbon emission, especially for [CI](2-1). We explore the correlations between the luminosities of CO(1-0) and [CI] lines, and find that L'_CO(1-0) correlates tightly and almost linearly with both L'_[CI](1-0) and L'_[CI](2-1), suggesting that [CI] lines, similar as CO(1-0), can trace total molecular gas in our resolved galaxies on kpc scales. We investigate the dependence of L'_[CI](1-0)/L'_CO(1-0), L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_CO(1-0) and [CI] excitation temperature T_ex on dust temperature T_dust, and find non-correlation, a weak and modest correlation, respectively. The ratio of L'_[CI](1-0)/L'_CO(1-0) stays smooth distribution in most galaxies, indicating that the conversion factor of [CI](1-0) luminosity to H_2 mass (X_[CI](1-0)) changes with CO(1-0) conversion factor (\alpha_CO) proportionally. Under optically thin and LTE assumptions, we derive a galaxy-wide average carbon excitation temperature T_ex ~ 19.7 \pm 0.5K and an average neutral carbon abundance X[CI]/X[H_2] ~2.5 \pm 1.0 * 10^{-5} in our resolved sample, which is comparable to the usually adopted value of 3*10^{-5}, but ~3 times lower than the carbon abundance in local (U)LIRGs. The SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer on board the Herschel Space Observatory had two standard spectral resolution modes for science observations: high resolution (HR) and low resolution (LR), which could also be performed in sequence (H+LR). A comparison of the HR and LR resolution spectra taken in this sequential mode, revealed a systematic discrepancy in the continuum level. Analysing the data at different stages during standard pipeline processing, demonstrates the telescope and instrument emission affect HR and H+LR observations in a systematically different way. The origin of this difference is found to lie in the variation of both the telescope and instrument response functions, while it is triggered by fast variation of the instrument temperatures. As it is not possible to trace the evolution of the response functions through auxiliary housekeeping parameters, the calibration cannot be corrected analytically. Therefore an empirical correction for LR spectra has been developed, which removes the systematic noise introduced by the variation of the response functions., 13 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables. We present the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observation of the Sub-millimeter galaxy (SMG) ID 141 at z=4.24 in the [N II] 205 $\mu$m line (hereafter [N II]) and the underlying continuum at (rest-frame) 197.6 $\mu$m. Benefiting from lensing magnification by a galaxy pair at z=0.595, ID 141 is one of the brightest z$>4$ SMGs. At the angular resolutions of $\sim1.2"$ to $1.5"$ ($1" \sim6.9$ kpc), our observation clearly separates, and moderately resolves the two lensed images in both continuum and line emission at $\rm S/N>5$ . Our continuum-based lensing model implies an averaged amplification factor of $\sim5.8$ and reveals that the de-lensed continuum image has the S\'ersic index $\simeq 0.95$ and the S\'ersic radius of $\sim0.18" (\sim 1.24$ kpc). Furthermore, the reconstructed [N II] velocity field in the source plane is dominated by a rotation component with a maximum velocity of $\sim 300$ km/s at large radii, indicating a dark matter halo mass of $\sim 10^{12}M_{\odot}$. In this paper we present our imaging observations on the CO (7−6) line and its underlying continuum emission of the young submillimeter galaxy LESS 073 at redshift 4.755, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). At the achieved resolution of ∼1 ′′ .2 × 0 ′′ .9 (8 × 6 kpc2 ), the CO (7−6) emission is largely unresolved (with a deconvolved size of 1′′ .1(±0 ′′ .5) × 0 ′′ .9(±0 ′′ .8).), and the continuum emission is totally unresolved. The CO (7−6) line emission has an integrated flux of 0.86 ± 0.08 Jy km s−1 , and a line width of 343 ± 40 km s−1 . The continuum emission has a flux density of 0.51 mJy. By fitting the observed far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distribution of LESS 073 with a single-temperature modified blackbody function, we obtained a dust temperature Tdust = 57.6 ± 3.5 K, 60-to-100 µm flux density ratio f60/f100 = 0.86 ± 0.08, and total infrared luminosity LIR = (5.8±0.9)×1012 L⊙. The SED-fit-based f60/f100 is consistent with those estimated from various line ratios as advocated by our earlier work, indicating that those proposed line-ratiobased method can be used to practically derive f60/f100 for high-z sources. The total molecular gas mass of LESS 073 is (3.3 ± 1.7) × 1010 M⊙, and the inferred gas depletion time is about 43 Myr.

We present high-resolution (0.17\arcsec $\times$ 0.14\arcsec) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the CO\,(6-5) line, and 435\um\ dust continuum emission within a $\sim$9\arcsec $\times$ 9\arcsec\ area centered on the nucleus of the galaxy NGC\,5135. NGC\,5135 is a well-studied luminous infrared galaxy that also harbors a Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN). At the achieved resolution of 48 $\times$ 40\,pc, the CO\,(6-5) and dust emissions are resolved into gas "clumps" along the symmetrical dust lanes associated with the inner stellar bar. The clumps have radii between $\sim$45-180\,pc and CO\,(6-5) line widths of $\sim$60-88\,\kms. The CO\,(6-5) to dust continuum flux ratios vary among the clumps and show an increasing trend with the \FeII/Br-$\gamma$ ratios, which we interpret as evidence for supernova-driven shocked gas providing a significant contribution to the \co65\ emission. The central AGN is undetected in continuum, nor in CO\,(6-5) if its line velocity width is no less than $\sim$\,40\,\kms. We estimate that the AGN contributes at most 1\% of the integrated CO\,(6-5) flux of 512 $\pm$ 24$\,$Jy\kms\ within the ALMA field of view, which in turn accounts for $\sim$32\% of the CO\,(6-5) flux of the whole galaxy., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present 0".97 $\times$ 0".53 (470 pc $\times$ 250 pc) resolution CO ($J$ = 2-1) observations toward the nearby luminous merging galaxy NGC 6240 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We confirmed a strong CO concentration within the central 700 pc, which peaks between the double nuclei, surrounded by extended CO features along the optical dust lanes ($\sim$11 kpc). We found that the CO emission around the central a few kpc has extremely broad velocity wings with full width at zero intensity $\sim$ 2000 km s$^{-1}$, suggesting a possible signature of molecular outflow(s). In order to extract and visualize the high-velocity components in NGC 6240, we performed a multiple Gaussian fit to the CO datacube. The distribution of the broad CO components show four extremely large linewidth regions ($\sim$1000 km s$^{-1}$) located 1-2 kpc away from both nuclei. Spatial coincidence of the large linewidth regions with H$\alpha$, near-IR H$_2$, and X-ray suggests that the broad CO (2-1) components are associated with nuclear outflows launched from the double nuclei., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letter

In this work we present new APEX/SEPIA Band-5 observations targeting the CO ($J=2\text{-}1$) emission line of 24 Herschel-detected galaxies at $z=0.1-0.2$. Combining this sample {with} our recent new Valpara\'iso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES), we investigate the star formation efficiencies (SFEs = SFR/$M_{\rm H_{2}}$) of galaxies at low redshift. We find the SFE of our sample bridges the gap between normal star-forming galaxies and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), which are thought to be triggered by different star formation modes. Considering the $\rm SFE'$ as the SFR and the $L'_{\rm CO}$ ratio, our data show a continuous and smooth increment as a function of infrared luminosity (or star formation rate) with a scatter about 0.5 dex, instead of a steep jump with a bimodal behaviour. This result is due to the use of a sample with a much larger range of sSFR/sSFR$_{\rm ms}$ using LIRGs, with luminosities covering the range between normal and ULIRGs. We conclude that the main parameters controlling the scatter of the SFE in star-forming galaxies are the systematic uncertainty of the $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ conversion factor, the gas fraction and physical size., Comment: 9pages, 7 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging in the [NII] 205 micron fine-structure line (hereafter [NII]) and the underlying continuum of BRI 1202-0725, an interacting galaxy system at $z =$ 4.7, consisting of an optical QSO, a sub-millimeter galaxy (SMG) and two Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs), all within $\sim$25 kpc of the QSO. We detect the QSO and SMG in both [NII] and continuum. At the $\sim$$1"$ (or 6.6 kpc) resolution, both QSO and SMG are resolved in [NII], with the de-convolved major axes of $\sim$9 and $\sim$14 kpc, respectively. In contrast, their continuum emissions are much more compact and unresolved even at an enhanced resolution of $\sim$$0.7"$. The ratio of the [NII] flux to the existing CO (7$-$6) flux is used to constrain the dust temperature ($T_{\rm dust}$) for a more accurate determination of the FIR luminosity $L_{\rm FIR}$. Our best estimated $T_{\rm dust}$ equals $43 (\pm 2)$ K for both galaxies (assuming an emissivity index $\beta = 1.8$). The resulting $L_{\rm CO(7-6)}/L_{\rm FIR}$ ratios are statistically consistent with that of local luminous infrared galaxies, confirming that $L_{\rm CO(7-6)}$ traces the star formation (SF) rate (SFR) in these galaxies. We estimate that the on-going SF of the QSO (SMG) has a SFR of 5.1 $(6.9) \times 10^3 M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ ($\pm$ 30%) assuming Chabrier initial mass function, takes place within a diameter (at half maximum) of 1.3 (1.5) kpc, and shall consume the existing 5 $(5) \times 10^{11} M_{\odot}$ of molecular gas in 10 $(7) \times 10^7$ years., Comment: 4 pages, 1 table, 4 figures; accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters

We present our high-resolution ($0^{\prime\prime}.15\times0^{\prime\prime}.13$, $\sim$34 pc) observations of the CO(6-5) line emission, which probes the warm and dense molecular gas, and the 434 $\mu$m dust continuum emission in the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy IC 5179, conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The CO(6-5) emission is spatially distributed in filamentary structures with many dense cores and shows a velocity field that is characteristic of a circum-nuclear rotating gas disk, with 90% of the rotation speed arising within a radius of $\lesssim150$ pc. At the scale of our spatial resolution, the CO(6-5) and dust emission peaks do not always coincide, with their surface brightness ratio varying by a factor of $\sim$10. This result suggests that their excitation mechanisms are likely different, as further evidenced by the Southwest to Northeast spatial gradient of both CO-to-dust continuum ratio and Pa-$\alpha$ equivalent width. Within the nuclear region (radius$\sim$300 pc) and with a resolution of $\sim$34 pc, the CO line flux (dust flux density) detected in our ALMA observations is $180\pm18$ Jy km/s ($71\pm7$ mJy), which account for 22% (2.4%) of the total value measured by Herschel., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We describe a Herschel Space Observatory 194-671 micron spectroscopic survey of a sample of 121 local luminous infrared galaxies and report the fluxes of the CO $J$ to $J$-1 rotational transitions for $4 \leqslant J \leqslant 13$, the [NII] 205 um line, the [CI] lines at 609 and 370 um, as well as additional and usually fainter lines. The CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs) presented here are consistent with our earlier work, which was based on a smaller sample, that calls for two distinct molecular gas components in general: (i) a cold component, which emits CO lines primarily at $J \lesssim 4$ and likely represents the same gas phase traced by CO (1-0), and (ii) a warm component, which dominates over the mid-$J$ regime ($4 < J < 10$) and is intimately related to current star formation. We present evidence that the CO line emission associated with an active galactic nucleus is significant only at $J > 10$. The flux ratios of the two [CI] lines imply modest excitation temperatures of 15 to 30 K; the [CI] 370 um line scales more linearly in flux with CO (4-3) than with CO (7-6). These findings suggest that the [CI] emission is predominately associated with the gas component defined in (i) above. Our analysis of the stacked spectra in different far-infrared (FIR) color bins reveals an evolution of the SLED of the rotational transitions of water vapor as a function of the FIR color in a direction consistent with infrared photon pumping., 244 pages, 23 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

Mid-infrared molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) emission is a powerful cooling agent in galaxy mergers and in radio galaxies; it is a potential key tracer of gas evolution and energy dissipation associated with mergers, star formation, and accretion onto supermassive black holes. We detect mid-IR H$_2$ line emission in at least one rotational transition in 91\% of the 214 Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) observed with Spitzer as part of the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). We use H$_2$ excitation diagrams to estimate the range of masses and temperatures of warm molecular gas in these galaxies. We find that LIRGs in which the IR emission originates mostly from the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) have about 100K higher H$_2$ mass-averaged excitation temperatures than LIRGs in which the IR emission originates mostly from star formation. Between 10 and 15\% of LIRGs have H$_2$ emission lines that are sufficiently broad to be resolved or partially resolved by the high resolution modules of Spitzer's Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). Those sources tend to be mergers and contain AGN. This suggests that a significant fraction of the H$_2$ line emission is powered by AGN activity through X-rays, cosmic rays, and turbulence. We find a statistically significant correlation between the kinetic energy in the H$_2$ gas and the H$_2$ to IR luminosity ratio. The sources with the largest warm gas kinetic energies are mergers. We present Herschel PACS $\&$ SPIRE far-infrared (FIR) and sub-mm imaging observations for a large K-band selected sample of 88 close major-merger pairs of galaxies (H-KPAIRs) in 6 photometric bands (70, 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 $��m$). Among 132 spiral galaxies in the 44 spiral-spiral (S$+$S) pairs and 44 spiral-elliptical (S$+$E) pairs, 113 are detected in at least one Herschel band. Star formation rate (SFR) and dust mass ($M_{\rm dust}$) are derived from the IR SED fitting. Mass of total gas ($M_{\rm gas}$) is estimated by assuming a constant dust-to-gas mass ratio of 0.01. Star forming spiral galaxies (SFGs) in S$+$S pairs show significant enhancements in both specific star formation rate (sSFR) and star formation efficiency (SFE), while having nearly the same gas mass, compared to control galaxies. On the other hand, for SFGs in S$+$E pairs, there is no significant sSFR enhancement and the mean SFE enhancement is significantly lower than that of SFGs in S$+$S pairs. This suggests an important role for the disc-disc collision in the interaction induced star formation. The $M_{\rm gas}$ of SFGs in S$+$E pairs is marginally lower than that of their counterparts in both S$+$S pairs and the control sample. Paired galaxies with and without interaction signs do not differ significantly in their mean sSFR and SFE. As found in previous works, this much larger sample confirms the primary and secondary spirals in S+S pairs follow a Holmberg effect correlation on sSFR., 21 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables. In this paper, we present the measurements of the [NII] 205micron line ([NII]205) for a flux-limited sample of 122 (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies [(U)LIRGs] and 20 additional normal galaxies, obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory. We explore the far-infrared (FIR) color dependence of the [NII]205 (L[NII]205) to the total infrared (LIR) luminosity ratio, and find that L[NII]205/LIR only depends modestly on the 70-to-160 micron flux density ratio (f70/f160) when f70/f160 0.6. We also investigate the relation between L[NII]205 and star formation rate (SFR), and show that L[NII]205 has a nearly linear correlation with SFR, albeit the intercept of such relation varies somewhat with f60/f100, consistent with our previous conclusion that \NIIab\ emission can serve as a SFR indicator with an accuracy of ~0.4 dex, or ~0.2 dex if f60/f100 is known independently. Furthermore, together with the ISO measurements of [NII] 122 micron emission we use a total of ~200 galaxies to derive the local [NII]205 luminosity function (LF) by tying it to the known IR LF with a bivariate method. As a practical application, we also compute the local SFR volume density ($\dot{\rho}_{\rm SFR}$) using the newly derived SFR calibrator and LF. The resulting $\log\,\dot{\rho}_{\rm SFR} = -1.96\pm0.11$ $M_\odot$\,yr$^{-1}$\,Mpc$^{-3}$ agrees well with previous studies. Finally, we determine the electron densities ($n_e$) of the ionized medium for a subsample of 12 (U)LIRGs with both [NII]205 and [NII]122 data, and find that $n_e$ is in the range of ~1-100 cm$^{-3}$, with a median value of 22 cm$^{-3}$, Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

In this paper, we report our high-resolution ($0^{\prime\prime}.20\times0^{\prime\prime}.14$ or $\sim$$70\times49$ pc) observations of the CO(6-5) line emission, which probes warm and dense molecular gas, and the 434 $\mu$m dust continuum in the nuclear region of NGC 7130, obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). The CO line and dust continuum fluxes detected in our ALMA observations are $1230\pm74$ Jy km s$^{-1}$ and $814\pm52$ mJy, respectively, which account for 100% and 51% of their total respective fluxes. We find that the CO(6-5) and dust emissions are generally spatially correlated, but their brightest peaks show an offset of $\sim$70 pc, suggesting that the gas and dust emissions may start decoupling at this physical scale. The brightest peak of the CO(6-5) emission does not spatially correspond to the radio continuum peak, which is likely dominated by an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). This, together with our additional quantitative analysis, suggests that the heating contribution of the AGN to the CO(6-5) emission in NGC 7130 is negligible. The CO(6-5) and the extinction-corrected Pa-$\alpha$ maps display striking differences, suggestive of either a breakdown of the correlation between warm dense gas and star formation at linear scales of $, Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an algorithm developed to automatically find/fit features in all Herschel/SPIRE-FTS spectra. Searchable spectral line and continuum feature catalogues and “quick-look” postcards have been produced for public distribution via the Herschel public TWiki.

We present the results from our Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging observations of the CO(7-6), [C i] 370 μm (hereafter [C i]), and [N ii] 205 μm (hereafter [N ii]) lines and their underlying continuum emission of BRI 1335-0417, an infrared bright quasar at z = 4.407. At the achieved resolutions of ∼1.″1 to 1.″2 (or 7.5-8.2 kpc), the continuum at 205 and 372 μm (rest frame), the CO(7-6), and the [C i] emissions are at best barely resolved whereas the [N ii] emission is well resolved with a beam-deconvolved major axis of 1.″3(±0.″3) or 9(±2) kpc. As a warm dense gas tracer, the CO(7-6) emission shows a more compact spatial distribution and a significantly higher peak velocity dispersion than the other two lines that probe lower density gas, a picture favoring a merger-Triggered star formation (SF) scenario over an orderly rotating SF disk. The CO(7-6) data also indicate a possible QSO-driven gas outflow that reaches a maximum line-of-sight velocity of 500-600 km s-1. The far-infrared (FIR) dust temperature (Tdust) of 41.5 K from a graybody fit to the continuum agrees well with the average Tdustinferred from various line luminosity ratios. The resulting LCO(7-6)/LFIRluminosity ratio is consistent with that of local luminous infrared galaxies powered predominantly by SF. The LCO(7-6)-inferred SF rate is 5.1(±1.5) × 103Moyr-1. The system has an effective star-forming region of kpc in diameter and a molecular gas reservoir of ∼5 × 1011Mo.

We present Spitzer observations for a sample of close major-merger galaxy pairs (KPAIR sample) selected from 2MASS/SDSS-DR3 cross-matches. The goals are to study the star formation activity in these galaxies and to set a local bench mark for the cosmic evolution of close major mergers. The Spitzer KPAIR sample (27 pairs, 54 galaxies) includes all spectroscopically confirmed S+S and S+E pairs in a parent sample that is complete for primaries brighter than K=12.5 mag, projected separations of 5< s < 20 kpc/h, and mass ratios, 73 pages; accpected by ApJ

The Herschel Space Observatory was the fourth cornerstone mission in the European Space Agency (ESA) science programme with excellent broad band imaging capabilities in the sub-mm and far-infrared part of the spectrum. Although the spacecraft finished its observations in 2013, it left a large legacy dataset that is far from having been fully scrutinised and still has a large potential for new scientific discoveries. This is specifically true for the photometric observations of the PACS and SPIRE instruments. Some source catalogues have already been produced by individual observing programs, but there are many observations that risk to remain unexplored. To maximise the science return of the SPIRE and PACS data sets, we are in the process of building the Herschel Point Source Catalogue (HPSC) from all primary and parallel mode observations. Our homogeneous source extraction enables a systematic and unbiased comparison of sensitivity across the different Herschel fields that single programs will generally not be able to provide. The catalogue will be made available online through archives like the Herschel Science Archive (HSA), the Infrared Science Archive (IRSA), and the Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center (CDS)., 2 pages, 1 figure

Asymmetries in the recorded interferograms of Fourier Transform Spectrometers (FTS) can be caused by optical, electronic, and sampling effects. Left uncorrected, these asymmetries will result in a spectrum with both real and imaginary components and thus a non-zero phase. One or more phase correction steps are applied in FTS data processing pipelines to correct for these effects. In this paper we describe the causes of non-zero phase particular to the Herschel/SPIRE FTS and present the two phase correction processing steps employed. The evolution of the phase correction algorithms is also described.

We present correlations between 9 CO transition ($J=4-3$ to $12-11$) and beam-matched far-infrared (Far-IR) luminosities ($L_{\mathrm{FIR},\,b}$) among 167 local galaxies, using {\it{Herschel}} Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver Fourier Transform Spectrometer (SPIRE; FTS) spectroscopic data and Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) photometry data. We adopt entire-galaxy FIR luminosities ($L_{\mathrm{FIR},\,e}$) from the {\it{IRAS}} Revised Bright Galaxy Sample and correct to $L_{\mathrm{FIR},\,b}$ using PACS images to match the varying FTS beam sizes. All 9 correlations between $L'_{\mathrm{CO}}$ and $L_{\mathrm{FIR},\,b}$ are essentially linear and tight ($\sigma$=0.2-0.3 dex dispersion), even for the highest transition, $J=12-11$. This supports the notion that the star formation rate (SFR) is linearly correlated with the dense molecular gas ($n_{\mathrm{H}_2}\gtrsim10^{4-6}\,cm^{-3}$). We divide the entire sample into three subsamples and find that smaller sample sizes can induce large differences in the correlation slopes. We also derive an average CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) for the entire sample and discuss the implied average molecular gas properties for these local galaxies. We further extend our sample to high-{\it{z}} galaxies with CO $J=5-4$ data from the literature as an example, including submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) and "normal" star-forming BzKs. BzKs have similar FIR/CO(5-4) ratios as that of local galaxies, an follow well the locally-determined correlation, whereas SMG ratios fall around or slightly above the local correlation with large uncertainties. Finally, by including Galactic CO($J=10-9$) data as well as very limited high-{\it{z}} CO $J=10-9$ data, we verify that the CO(10-9) -- FIR correlation successfully extends to Galactic young stellar objects, suggesting that linear correlations are valid over 15 orders of magnitude., Comment: Published in ApJL, 810, L14

To better characterize the global star formation (SF) activity in a galaxy, one needs to know not only the star formation rate (SFR) but also the rest-frame, far-infrared (FIR) color (e.g., the 60-to-100 $\mu$m color, $C(60/100)$] of the dust emission. The latter probes the average intensity of the dust heating radiation field and scales statistically with the effective SFR surface density in star-forming galaxies including (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies [(U)LIRGs]. To this end, we exploit here a new spectroscopic approach involving only two emission lines: CO\,(7$-$6) at 372 $\mu$m and [NII] at 205 $\mu$m. For local (U)LIRGs, the ratios of the CO (7$-$6) luminosity ($L_{\rm CO\,(7-6)}$) to the total infrared luminosity ($L_{\rm IR}$; 8$-$1000 $\mu$m) are fairly tightly distributed (to within $\sim$0.12 dex) and show little dependence on $C(60/100)$. This makes $L_{\rm CO\,(7-6)}$ a good SFR tracer, which is less contaminated by active galactic nuclei (AGN) than $L_{\rm IR}$ and may also be much less sensitive to metallicity than $L_{\rm CO\,(1-0)}$. Furthermore, the logarithmic [NII] 205 $\mu$m to CO (7$-$6) luminosity ratio is fairly steeply (at a slope of $\sim$$-1.4$) correlated with $C(60/100)$, with a modest scatter ($\sim$0.23 dex). This makes it a useful estimator on $C(60/100)$ with an implied uncertainty of $\sim$0.15 [or $\lesssim$4 K in the dust temperature ($T_{\rm dust}$) in the case of a graybody emission with $T_{\rm dust} \gtrsim 30$ K and a dust emissivity index $\beta \ge 1$]. Context: Dust reprocesses about half of the stellar radiation in galaxies. The thermal re-emission by dust of absorbed energy is considered driven merely by young stars and, consequently, often applied to trace the star formation rate in galaxies. Recent studies have argued that the old stellar population might anticipate a non-negligible fraction of the radiative dust heating. Aims: In this work, we aim to analyze the contribution of young (< 100 Myr) and old (~ 10 Gyr) stellar populations to radiative dust heating processes in the nearby grand-design spiral galaxy M51 using radiative transfer modeling. High-resolution 3D radiative transfer (RT) models are required to describe the complex morphologies of asymmetric spiral arms and clumpy star-forming regions and model the propagation of light through a dusty medium. Methods: In this paper, we present a new technique developed to model the radiative transfer effects in nearby face-on galaxies. We construct a high-resolution 3D radiative transfer model with the Monte-Carlo code SKIRT accounting for the absorption, scattering and non-local thermal equilibrium (NLTE) emission of dust in M51. The 3D distribution of stars is derived from the 2D morphology observed in the IRAC 3.6 {\mu}m, GALEX FUV, H{\alpha} and MIPS 24 {\mu}m wavebands, assuming an exponential vertical distribution with an appropriate scale height. The dust geometry is constrained through the far-ultraviolet (FUV) attenuation, which is derived from the observed total-infrared-to-far-ultraviolet luminosity ratio. The stellar luminosity, star formation rate and dust mass have been scaled to reproduce the observed stellar spectral energy distribution (SED), FUV attenuation and infrared SED. The Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) multiband images from the Spitzer Space Telescope First Look Survey of two 1° × 5' areas of diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) are used to study the near-infrared (NIR; 2-5 μm) continuum emission and its relation to the mid-infrared (6-10 μm) aromatic features in emission (AFEs). We illustrate that the high sensitivity and spatial resolution of IRAC make it possible to separate the extended emission from stars independently of any model of the distribution of stars in the Galaxy. It is shown that the two independently observed areas have similar colors. Taking into account the current IRAC calibration uncertainties, these colors agree with previous Cosmic Background Explorer measurements in the Galaxy and with Infrared Space Observatory spectra of the ISM in normal star-forming galaxies. Our results imply that the average 3-10 μm spectral shape of the ISM emission does not vary significantly from diffuse sources to star-forming regions, suggesting a close physical relation between the carriers of the NIR continuum and AFEs.

We present ISO-PHOT spectra of the regions 2.5-4.9um and 5.8-11.6um for a sample of 45 disk galaxies from the U.S. ISO Key Project on Normal Galaxies. The spectra can be decomposed into three spectral components: (1) continuum emission from stellar photospheres, which dominates the near-infrared (2.5- 4.9um; NIR) spectral region; (2) a weak NIR excess continuum, which has a color temperature of ~ 1000K, carries a luminosity of a few percent of the total far-infrared luminosity L(FIR), and most likely arises from the ISM; and (3) the well-known broad emission features at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.3 um, which are generally attributed to aromatic carbon particles. These aromatic features in emission (AFEs) dominate the mid-infrared (5.8-11.6 um; MIR) part of the spectrum, and resemble the so-called Type-A spectra observed in many non-stellar sources and the diffuse ISM in our own Galaxy. The relative strengths of the AFEs vary by 15-25% among the galaxies. However, little correlation is seen between these variations and either IRAS 60um-to-100um flux density ratio R(60/100) or the FIR-to-blue luminosity ratio L(FIR)/L(B), suggesting that the observed variations are not a direct consequence of the radiation field differences among the galaxies. We demonstrate that the NIR excess continuum and AFE emission are correlated, suggesting that they are produced by similar mechanisms and similar (or the same) material. On the other hand, as the current star-formation activity increases, the overall strengths of the AFEs and the NIR excess continuum drop significantly with respect to that of the far-infrared emission from large dust grains. This is likely a consequence of the preferential destruction in intense radiation fields of the small carriers responsible for the NIR/AFE emission.

We present an analysis of [OI]63, [OIII]88, [NII]122 and [CII]158 far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line observations obtained with Herschel/PACS, for ~240 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). We find pronounced declines -deficits- of line-to-FIR-continuum emission for [NII]122, [OI]63 and [CII]158 as a function of FIR color and infrared luminosity surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm IR}$. The median electron density of the ionized gas in LIRGs, based on the [NII]122/[NII]205 ratio, is $n_{\rm e}$ = 41 cm$^{-3}$. We find that the dispersion in the [CII]158 deficit of LIRGs is attributed to a varying fractional contribution of photo-dissociation-regions (PDRs) to the observed [CII]158 emission, f([CII]PDR) = [CII]PDR/[CII], which increases from ~60% to ~95% in the warmest LIRGs. The [OI]63/[CII]158PDR ratio is tightly correlated with the PDR gas kinetic temperature in sources where [OI]63 is not optically-thick or self-absorbed. For each galaxy, we derive the average PDR hydrogen density, $n_{\rm H}$, and intensity of the interstellar radiation field, in units of G$_0$, and find G$_0$/$n_{\rm H}$ ratios ~0.1-50 cm$^3$, with ULIRGs populating the upper end of the distribution. There is a relation between G$_0$/$n_{\rm H}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm IR}$, showing a critical break at $\Sigma_{\rm IR}^{\star}$ ~ 5 x 10$^{10}$ Lsun/kpc$^2$. Below $\Sigma_{\rm IR}^{\star}$, G$_0$/$n_{\rm H}$ remains constant, ~0.32 cm$^3$, and variations in $\Sigma_{\rm IR}$ are driven by the number density of star-forming regions within a galaxy, with no change in their PDR properties. Above $\Sigma_{\rm IR}^{\star}$, G$_0$/$n_{\rm H}$ increases rapidly with $\Sigma_{\rm IR}$, signaling a departure from the typical PDR conditions found in normal star-forming galaxies towards more intense/harder radiation fields and compact geometries typical of starbursting sources., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures. We present a statistical study on the [C I]($^{3} \rm P_{1} \rightarrow {\rm ^3 P}_{0}$), [C I] ($^{3} \rm P_{2} \rightarrow {\rm ^3 P}_{1}$) lines (hereafter [C I] (1$-$0) and [C I] (2$-$1), respectively) and the CO (1$-$0) line for a sample of (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies [(U)LIRGs]. We explore the correlations between the luminosities of CO (1$-$0) and [C I] lines, and find that $L'_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$ correlates almost linearly with both $L'_ \mathrm{[CI](1-0)}$ and $L'_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$, suggesting that [C I] lines can trace total molecular gas mass at least for (U)LIRGs. We also investigate the dependence of $L'_\mathrm{[CI](1-0)}$/$L'_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$, $L'_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$/$L'_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$ and $L'_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$/$L'_\mathrm{[CI](1-0)}$ on the far-infrared color of 60-to-100 $\mu$m, and find non-correlation, a weak correlation and a modest correlation, respectively. Under the assumption that these two carbon transitions are optically thin, we further calculate the [C I] line excitation temperatures, atomic carbon masses, and the mean [C I] line flux-to-H$_2$ mass conversion factors for our sample. The resulting $\mathrm{H_2}$ masses using these [C I]-based conversion factors roughly agree with those derived from $L'_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$ and CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

The Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) is one of three scientific instruments on board the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory which ended its operational phase on 29 April 2013. The low to medium resolution spectroscopic capability of SPIRE is provided by an imaging Fourier transform spectrometer (iFTS) of the Mach-Zehnder configuration. With their high throughput, broad spectral coverage, and variable resolution, coupled with their well-defined instrumental line shape and intrinsic wavelength and intensity calibration, iFTS are becoming increasingly common in far-infrared space astronomy missions. The performance of the SPIRE imaging spectrometer will be reviewed and example results presented. The lessons learned from the measured performance of the spectrometer as they apply to future missions will be discussed.

Emission from the Herschel telescope is the dominant source of radiation for the majority of SPIRE Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) observations, despite the exceptionally low emissivity of the primary and secondary mirrors. Accurate modelling and removal of the telescope contribution is, therefore, an important and challenging aspect of FTS calibration and data reduction pipeline. A dust-contaminated telescope model with time invariant mirror emissivity was adopted before the Herschel launch. However, measured FTS spectra show a clear evolution of the telescope contribution over the mission and strong need for a correction to the standard telescope model in order to reduce residual background (of up to 7 Jy) in the final data products. Systematic changes in observations of dark sky, taken over the course of the mission, provide a measure of the evolution between observed telescope emission and the telescope model. These dark sky observations have been used to derive a time dependent correction to the telescope emissivity that reduces the systematic error in the continuum of the final FTS spectra to ~0.35 Jy., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

Herschel/SPIRE Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) observations contain emission from both the Herschel Telescope and the SPIRE Instrument itself, both of which are typically orders of magnitude greater than the emission from the astronomical source, and must be removed in order to recover the source spectrum. The effects of the Herschel Telescope and the SPIRE Instrument are removed during data reduction using relative spectral response calibration curves and emission models. We present the evolution of the methods used to derive the relative spectral response calibration curves for the SPIRE FTS. The relationship between the calibration curves and the ultimate sensitivity of calibrated SPIRE FTS data is discussed and the results from the derivation methods are compared. These comparisons show that the latest derivation methods result in calibration curves that impart a factor of between 2 and 100 less noise to the overall error budget, which results in calibrated spectra for individual observations whose noise is reduced by a factor of 2-3, with a gain in the overall spectral sensitivity of 23% and 21% for the two detector bands, respectively., 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

The Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) of the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE) on board the ESA Herschel Space Observatory has two detector setting modes: (a) a nominal mode, which is optimized for observing moderately bright to faint astronomical targets, and (b) a bright-source mode recommended for sources significantly brighter than 500 Jy, within the SPIRE FTS bandwidth of 446.7-1544 GHz (or 194-671 microns in wavelength), which employs a reduced detector responsivity and out-of-phase analog signal amplifier/demodulator. We address in detail the calibration issues unique to the bright-source mode, describe the integration of the bright-mode data processing into the existing pipeline for the nominal mode, and show that the flux calibration accuracy of the bright-source mode is generally within 2% of that of the nominal mode, and that the bright-source mode is 3 to 4 times less sensitive than the nominal mode., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

We present our initial results on the CO rotational spectral line energy distribution (SLED) of the $J$ to $J$$-$1 transitions from $J=4$ up to $13$ from Herschel SPIRE spectroscopic observations of 65 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). The observed SLEDs change on average from one peaking at $J \le 4$ to a broad distribution peaking around $J \sim\,$6$-$7 as the IRAS 60-to-100 um color, $C(60/100)$, increases. However, the ratios of a CO line luminosity to the total infrared luminosity, $L_{\rm IR}$, show the smallest variation for $J$ around 6 or 7. This suggests that, for most LIRGs, ongoing star formation (SF) is also responsible for a warm gas component that emits CO lines primarily in the mid-$J$ regime ($5 \lesssim J \lesssim 10$). As a result, the logarithmic ratios of the CO line luminosity summed over CO (5$-$4), (6$-$5), (7$-$6), (8$-$7) and (10$-$9) transitions to $L_{\rm IR}$, $\log R_{\rm midCO}$, remain largely independent of $C(60/100)$, and show a mean value of $-4.13$ ($\equiv \log R^{\rm SF}_{\rm midCO}$) and a sample standard deviation of only 0.10 for the SF-dominated galaxies. Including additional galaxies from the literature, we show, albeit with small number of cases, the possibility that galaxies, which bear powerful interstellar shocks unrelated to the current SF, and galaxies, in which an energetic active galactic nucleus contributes significantly to the bolometric luminosity, have their $R_{\rm midCO}$ higher and lower than $R^{\rm SF}_{\rm midCO}$, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters; 5 pages, 4 figures

The Herschel SPIRE Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) performs spectral imaging in the 447-1546 GHz band. It can observe in three spatial sampling modes: sparse mode, with a single pointing on sky, or intermediate or full modes with 1 and 1/2 beam spacing, respectively. In this paper, we investigate the uncertainty and repeatability for fully sampled FTS mapping observations. The repeatability is characterised using nine observations of the Orion Bar. Metrics are derived based on the ratio of the measured intensity in each observation compared to that in the combined spectral cube from all observations. The mean relative deviation is determined to be within 2%, and the pixel-by-pixel scatter is ~7%. The scatter increases towards the edges of the maps. The uncertainty in the frequency scale is also studied, and the spread in the line centre velocity across the maps is found to be ~15 km/s. We report the first systematic study of the submillimeter water vapor rotational emission lines in infrared (IR) galaxies based on the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) data of {\it Herschel} SPIRE. Among the 176 galaxies with publicly available FTS data, 45 have at least one H$_2$O emission line detected. The H$_2$O line luminosities range from $\sim 1 \times 10^5$ $L_{\odot}$ to $\sim 5 \times 10^7 L_{\odot}$ while the total IR luminosities ($L_\mathrm{IR}$) have a similar spread ($\sim 1-300 \times 10^{10} L_{\odot}$). In addition, emission lines of H$_2$O$^+$ and H$_2^{18}$O are also detected. H$_2$O is found, for most galaxies, to be the strongest molecular emitter after CO in FTS spectra. The luminosity of the five most important H$_2$O lines is near-linearly correlated with $L_\mathrm{IR}$, no matter whether strong active galactic nucleus signature is present or not. However, the luminosity of H$_2$O($2_{11}-2_{02}$) and H$_2$O($2_{20}-2_{11}$) appears to increase slightly faster than linear with $L_\mathrm{IR}$. Although the slope turns out to be slightly steeper when $z\sim 2-4$ ULIRGs are included, the correlation is still closely linear. We find that $L_\mathrm{H_2O}/L_\mathrm{IR}$ decreases with increasing $f_{25}/f_{60}$, but see no dependence on $f_{60}/f_{100}$, possibly indicating that very warm dust contributes little to the excitation of the submillimeter H$_2$O lines. The average spectral line energy distribution (SLED) of the entire sample is consistent with individual SLEDs and the IR pumping plus collisional excitation model, showing that the strongest lines are H$_2$O($2_{02}-1_{11}$) and H$_2$O($3_{21}-3_{12}$)., 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, ApJ Letters in press, very minor edit

We present, for the first time, a statistical study of [N II] 205 mciron line emission for a large sample of local luminous infrared galaxies using Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver Fourier Transform Spectrometer (SPIRE FTS) data. For our sample of galaxies, we investigate the correlation between the [N II] luminosity (LNII) and the total infrared luminosity (LIR), as well as the dependence of LNII/LIR ratio on LIR, far infrared colors (IRAS $f_{60}/f_{100}$) and the [O III] 88 micron to [N II] luminosity ratio. We find that LNII correlates almost linearly with LIR for non AGN galaxies (all having $L_{IR} < 10^{12} L_solar$) in our sample, which implies that LNII can serve as a SFR tracer which is particularly useful for high redshift galaxies which will be observed with forthcoming submm spectroscopic facilities such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Our analysis shows that the deviation from the mean LNII-LIR relation correlates with tracers of the ionization parameter, which suggests the scatter in this relation is mainly due to the variations in the hardness, and/or ionization parameter, of the ambient galactic UV field among the sources in our sample., 6 emulateapj pages, 3 figures; ApJ Letter accepted

We present a method to derive the relative pointing offsets for SPIRE Fourier-Transform Spectrometer (FTS) solar system object (SSO) calibration targets, which were observed regularly throughout the Herschel mission. We construct ratios of the spectra for all observations of a given source with respect to a reference. The reference observation is selected iteratively to be the one with the highest observed continuum. Assuming that any pointing offset leads to an overall shift of the continuum level, then these ratios represent the relative flux loss due to mispointing. The mispointing effects are more pronounced for a smaller beam, so we consider only the FTS short wavelength array (SSW, 958-1546 GHz) to derive a pointing correction. We obtain the relative pointing offset by comparing the ratio to a grid of expected losses for a model source at different distances from the centre of the beam, under the assumption that the SSW FTS beam can be well approximated by a Gaussian. In order to avoid dependency on the point source flux conversion, which uses a particular observation of Uranus, we use extended source flux calibrated spectra to construct the ratios for the SSOs. In order to account for continuum variability, due to the changing distance from the Herschel telescope, the SSO ratios are normalised by the expected model ratios for the corresponding observing epoch. We confirm the accuracy of the derived pointing offset by comparing the results with a number of control observations, where the actual pointing of Herschel is known with good precision. Using the method we derived pointing offsets for repeated observations of Uranus (including observations centred on off-axis detectors), Neptune, Ceres and NGC7027. The Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) on the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory utilizes a pioneering design for its imaging spectrometer in the form of a Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS). The standard FTS data reduction and calibration schemes are aimed at objects with either a spatial extent much larger than the beam size or a source that can be approximated as a point source within the beam. However, when sources are of intermediate spatial extent, neither of these calibrations schemes is appropriate and both the spatial response of the instrument and the source's light profile must be taken into account and the coupling between them explicitly derived. To that end, we derive the necessary corrections using an observed spectrum of a fully extended source with the beam profile and the source's light profile taken into account. We apply the derived correction to several observations of planets and compare the corrected spectra with their spectral models to study the beam coupling efficiency of the instrument in the case of partially extended sources. We find that we can apply these correction factors for sources with angular sizes up to \theta_{D} ~ 17". We demonstrate how the angular size of an extended source can be estimated using the difference between the sub-spectra observed at the overlap bandwidth of the two frequency channels in the spectrometer, at 959, Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A

The imaging spectroscopic capability of the SPIRE instrument onboard ESA’s Herschel mission is provided by an imaging FTS. Results from the in-orbit performance of SPIRE are presented and conformance with its design specifications is reviewed.

We describe the current state of the ground segment of Herschel-SPIRE photometer data processing, approximately one year into the mission. The SPIRE photometer operates in two modes: scan mapping and chopped point source photometry. For each mode, the basic analysis pipeline - which follows in reverse the effects from the incidence of light on the telescope to the storage of samples from the detector electronics - is essentially the same as described pre-launch. However, the calibration parameters and detailed numerical algorithms have advanced due to the availability of commissioning and early science observations, resulting in reliable pipelines which produce accurate and sensitive photometry and maps at 250, 350, and 500 μm with minimal residual artifacts. We discuss some detailed aspects of the pipelines on the topics of: detection of cosmic ray glitches, linearization of detector response, correction for focal plane temperature drift, subtraction of detector baselines (offsets), absolute calibration, and basic map making. Several of these topics are still under study with the promise of future enhancements to the pipelines.

We present an update to the data processing pipelines that generate calibrated spectral data products from the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE), one of three scientific instruments onboard the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory launched on 14 May 2009. The pipelines process telemetry from SPIRE's imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) taken in point source, jiggle- and raster-map observing modes, producing calibrated spectra in low-, medium-, high-, and mixed low- and high-spectral resolution. While the order and algorithms of the data processing modules in the spectrometer pipelines remain for the most part unchanged compared to their pre-launch status, some improvements and optimizations have been realized through the analysis of data from the performance verification and science demonstration phases of the mission. The data processing pipelines for the SPIRE FTS as of the beginning of the routine phase of the Herschel mission are presented in their entirety, with more detailed descriptions reserved for those elements that have changed since launch, in particular the first- and second-level correction steps for glitches, the step that corrects for clipped samples, and the process by which Level-1 spectral data are converted to Level-2 products. In addition, we discuss some of the challenging aspects still faced by the automated processing pipelines, such as the removal of the contributions from the Herschel telescope and SPIRE instrument, and the relative spectral response correction and flux conversion steps.

The Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) is one of three scientific instruments onboard the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory launched on 14 May 2009. The low to medium resolution spectroscopic capability of SPIRE is provided by an imaging Fourier transform spectrometer of the Mach-Zehnder configuration. Results from the in flight performance verification phase of the SPIRE spectrometer are presented and conformance with the instrument design specifications is reviewed.

The flight model of the SPIRE instrument underwent several test campaigns in a test facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in the UK. A final dark campaign, completed in March 2007, provided an environment virtually free from optical radiation. This allowed re-determining the fundamental model parameters of the NTD spider web bolometer detector arrays in the new environment. The tests reported in this paper produced a fairly homogeneous dataset to investigate white noise and 1/f noise at different bias voltages, bias frequencies, and bath temperatures. We find that the white noise performance is in excellent agreement with the model predictions, once we correct the low frequency signal variations that are due to temperature fluctuations of the thermal bath at about 300 mK. The temperature of the thermal bath (detector array base plate) is measured by thermistor pixels that are part of the bolometer arrays. A residual 1/f component beyond those variations is hardly detected. This unexpected stability is very welcome and will positively impact photometer scan maps, the most popular observing mode of SPIRE.

We describe the on-board electronics chain and the on-ground data processing pipeline that will operate on data from the Herschel-SPIRE photometer to produce calibrated astronomical products. Data from the three photometer arrays will be conditioned and digitised by on-board electronics and sent to the ground with no further on-board data processing. On the ground, the data pipeline will process the data from point source, jiggle-map, and scan-map observations in a fully automatic manner, producing measured flux densities (for point source observations) or maps. It includes calculation of the bolometer voltages from the raw telemetry, glitch removal, and corrections for various effects including time constants associated with the detectors and electronics, electrical and optical crosstalk, detector temperature drifts, flatfielding, and non-linear response of the bolometers to strong sources. Flux density calibration will be with respect to standard astronomical sources with the planets Uranus and Neptune being adopted as the baseline primary standards. The pipeline will compute estimated values of in-beam flux density for a standard flat νS(ν) source spectrum.

International audience; SPIRE, the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver, is a submillimetre camera and spectrometer for Herschel. It comprises a three-band camera operating at 250, 350 and 500 Â\textmum, and an imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer covering 194-672 \ensuremathμm. The photometer field of view is 4x8 arcmin., viewed simultaneously in the three bands. The FTS has an approximately circular field of view of 2.6 arcmin. diameter and spectral resolution adjustable between 0.04 and 2 cm^-1 ( \ensuremathλ/▵\ensuremathλ=20-1000 at 250 \ensuremathμm). Following successful testing in a dedicated facility designed to simulate the in-flight operational conditions, SPIRE has been integrated in the Herschel spacecraft and is now undergoing system-level testing prior to launch. The main design features of SPIRE are reviewed, the key results of instrument testing are outlined, and a summary of the predicted in-flight performance is given.

The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) mode of the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) Space Telescope provides low-spectral resolution (R ~ 15-25) spectroscopy in the far infrared using the MIPS 70 um detector. A reflective grating provides a dispersion of 1.7 um per pixel, and an effective wavelength coverage of 52.8--98.7 um over detector rows 1-27. The final 5 detector rows are contaminated by second-order diffracted light and are left uncalibrated. The flux calibration is based on observations of MIPS calibration stars with 70 um flux densities of 0.5--15 Jy. The point-source flux calibration accuracy is estimated to be 10% or better down to about 0.5 Jy at the blue end of the spectrum and to 2 Jy near the red end. With additional uncertainties from the illumination and aperture corrections included, the surface brightness calibration of extended sources is accurate to ~15%. Repeatability of better than 5% is found for the SED mode through multiple measurements of several calibration stars., To Appear in PASP

International audience; We present the data processing pipeline to generate calibrated data products from the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer. The pipeline processes telemetry from SPIRE point source, jiggle- and raster-map observations, producing calibrated spectra in low-, medium-, high-, and mixed low- and highresolution modes. The spectrometer pipeline shares some elements with the SPIRE photometer pipeline, including the conversion of telemetry packets into data timelines and the calculation of bolometer voltages from the raw telemetry. We present the following fundamental processing steps unique to the spectrometer: temporal and spatial interpolation of the stage mechanism and detector data to create interferograms; apodization; Fourier transform, and creation of a hyperspectral data cube. We also describe the corrections for various instrumental effects including first- and secondlevel glitch identification and removal, correction of the effects due to the Herschel primary mirror and the spectrometer calibrator, interferogram baseline correction, channel fringe correction, temporal and spatial phase correction, non-linear response of the bolometers, variation of instrument performance across the focal plane arrays, and variation of spectral efficiency. Astronomical calibration is based on combinations of observations of standard astronomical sources and regions of space known to contain minimal emission.

With the newly available SPIRE images at 250 and 500 micron from Herschel Space Observatory, we study quantitative correlations over a sub-kpc scale among three distinct emission components in the interstellar medium of the nearby spiral galaxy M 81 (NGC 3031): (a) $I_{8}$ or $I_{24}$, the surface brightness of the mid-infrared emission observed in the Spitzer IRAC 8 or MIPS 24 micron band, with $I_8$ and $I_{24}$ being dominated by the emissions from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and very small grains (VSGs) of dust, respectively; (b) $I_{500}$, that of the cold dust continuum emission in the Herschel SPIRE 500 micron band, dominated by the emission from large dust grains heated by evolved stars, and (c) $I_{{\rm H}\alpha}$, a nominal surface brightness of the H$\alpha$ line emission, from gas ionized by newly formed massive stars. The results from our correlation study, free from any assumption on or modeling of dust emissivity law or dust temperatures, present solid evidence for significant heating of PAHs and VSGs by evolved stars. In the case of M 81, about 67% (48%) of the 8 micron (24 micron) emission derives its heating from evolved stars, with the remainder attributed to radiation heating associated with ionizing stars., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) provides long wavelength capability for the mission, in imaging bands at 24, 70, and 160 microns and measurements of spectral energy distributions between 52 and 100 microns at a spectral resolution of about 7%. By using true detector arrays in each band, it provides both critical sampling of the Spitzer point spread function and relatively large imaging fields of view, allowing for substantial advances in sensitivity, angular resolution, and efficiency of areal coverage compared with previous space far-infrared capabilities. The Si:As BIB 24 micron array has excellent photometric properties, and measurements with rms relative errors of 1% or better can be obtained. The two longer wavelength arrays use Ge:Ga detectors with poor photometric stability. However, the use of 1.) a scan mirror to modulate the signals rapidly on these arrays, 2.) a system of on-board stimulators used for a relative calibration approximately every two minutes, and 3.) specialized reduction software result in good photometry with these arrays also, with rms relative errors of less than 10%.
