The morphology-dependent antibacterial activity of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles with three different morphologies, nanowall (NW), nanosphere (NS), and, nanorod (NR) was rigorously investigated to elucidate the influence of shape and size on their performance. Their morphological, surface, and structural characteristics were meticulously analyzed using SEM, BET, and XRD techniques. The antibacterial activity of synthesized ZnO samples was initially investigated and validated through in silico docking studies against nine bacterial strains, specifically targeting 1GCI, 2DCJ, 6KMM and 3T07, 6KVQ, 1MWT from gram-positive Bacillus sp. and Staphylococcus sp. respectively, 6N38, 6CRT, 6GRH from gram-negative E. coli. The docking simulations were performed using Autodock 4.2 software, yielding promising results characterized by negative binding energies, indicative of favorable interactions. The invitro studies were assessed against three same bacteria mentioned above using the disk diffusion method. The results demonstrated a pronounced dependency of antibacterial activity on the surface area, average crystallite size, and surface roughness of ZnO samples. ZnO (NW) exhibited markedly superior antibacterial properties. This enhanced efficacy is attributed to their higher surface area to volume ratio, smaller average crystallite size and increased surface roughness facilitating more efficient interactions with bacterial cell membranes. In the current study, a core-shell inorganic nanostructure comprising a gold nanorod core and -mesoporous manganese dioxide shell was synthesized. Then, the mesoporous manganese dioxide shell was loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) and then coated with pluronic F127 and pluronic F127-folic acid conjugate (1.5:1 wt ratio of pluronic F127: pluronic F127-folic acid conjugate) to prepare targeted final platform. In this design, mesoporous manganese dioxide acted as a reservoir for DOX loading, anti-hypoxia, and MRI contrast agent, while the gold nanorod core acted as a photothermal and CT scan imaging agent. DOX was encapsulated in the mesoporous manganese dioxide shell with a loading capacity and loading efficiency of 19.8 % ± 0.2 and 99.0 % ± 0.9, respectively. The in vitro release experiment showed the impact of glutathione (GSH), mildly acidic pH, and laser irradiating toward accelerated stimuli-responsive DOX release. The ·OH production of the prepared platform was verified by methylene blue (MB) decomposition reaction. Furthermore, thermal imaging exhibited the ability of the prepared platform to convert the NIR irradiation to heat. In vitro cytotoxicity tests on the folate receptor-positive 4 T1 cell line revealed the remarkable cytotoxicity of the targeted formulation compared to the nontargeted formulation (statistically significant). The MTT experiment demonstrated that exposure to laser 808 irradiation enhanced cytotoxicity of the targeted formulation (p < 0.0001). The production of ROS in 4 T1 cells following treatment with the targeted formulation was demonstrated by the dichloro-dihydro-fluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) assay. Furthermore, in vivo investigations by implementing subcutaneous 4 T1 tumorized female BABL/c mice indicated that the prepared platform was an effective system in suppressing tumor growth by combining chemotherapy with PTT (photothermal therapy). Additionally, simultanous PTT and anti-hypoxic activity of this system showed potent tumor growth suppression impact. The percent of tumor size reduction in mice treated with FA-F127-DOX@Au-MnO 2  + 808 nm laser compared to the control group was 99.7 %. The results of the biodistribution investigation showed tumor accumulation and modified pharmacokinetics of the targeted system. Lastly, 6 and 24 h post-intravenous injection, CT-scan and MR imagings capability of the prepared platform was verified in preclinical stage. The accurate determination of polar cationic pesticides in food poses a challenge due to their high polarity and trace levels in complex matrices. This study hypothesized that the use of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) can significantly enhance the extraction efficiency and sensitivity of these analytes because of their rich hydroxyl groups and cation exchange sites. Therefore, we chemically incorporated HNTs with organic polymer monoliths for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME). This novel hybrid monolith extended service life, improved adsorption capacity, and exhibited excellent extraction performance for polar cationic pesticides. Based on these advancements, a robust and sensitive in-tube SPME-HILIC-MS/MS method was constructed to determine trace levels of polar cationic pesticides in complex food matrices. The method achieved limits of detection of 1.9, 2.1, and 0.1 μg/kg for maleic hydrazide, amitrole, and cyromazine, respectively. Low accuracy of diagnosing prostate cancer (PCa) was easily caused by only assaying single prostate specific antigen (PSA) biomarker. Although conventional reported methods for simultaneous detection of two specific PCa biomarkers could improve the diagnostic efficiency and accuracy, low detection sensitivity restrained their use in extreme early-stage PCa clinical assay applications. In order to overcome above drawbacks, this paper herein proposed a multiplexed dual optical microfibers separately functionalized with gold nanorods (GNRs) and Au nanobipyramids (Au NBPs) nanointerfaces with strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects. The sensors could simultaneously detect PSA protein biomarker and long noncoding RNA prostate cancer antigen 3 (lncRNA PCA3) with ultrahigh sensitivity and remarkable specificity. Consequently, the proposed dual optical microfibers multiplexed biosensors could detect the PSA protein and lncRNA PCA3 with ultra-low limit-of-detections (LODs) of 3.97 × 10 -15  mol/L and 1.56 × 10 -14  mol/L in pure phosphorus buffer solution (PBS), respectively, in which the obtained LODs were three orders of magnitude lower than existed state-of-the-art PCa assay technologies. Additionally, the sensors could discriminate target components from complicated physiological environment, that showing noticeable biosensing specificity of the sensors. With good performances of the sensors, they could successfully assay PSA and lncRNA PCA3 in undiluted human serum and urine simultaneously, respectively. Endowing titanium surfaces with multifunctional properties can reduce implant-related infections and enhance osseointegration. In this study, titanium dioxide nanotubes with strontium doping (STN) were first created on the titanium surface using anodic oxidation and hydrothermal synthesis techniques. Next, casein phosphopeptide (CCP) and an antimicrobial peptide (HHC36) were loaded into the STN with the aid of vacuum physical adsorption (STN-CP-H), giving the titanium surface a dual function of "antimicrobial-osteogenic". The surface of STN-CP-H has a suitable roughness and good hydrophilicity, which is conducive to osteoblasts. STN-CP-H had a 99 % antibacterial rate against S. aureus and E. coli and effectively prevented the growth of bacterial biofilm. Meanwhile, the antibacterial mechanism of STN-CP-H was initially explored with the help of transcriptome sequencing technology. STN-CP-H could greatly increase osteoblast adhesion, proliferation, and expression of osteogenic markers (alkaline phosphatase, runt-related transcription) when CCP and Sr worked together synergistically. In vivo, the STN-CP-H coating could effectively promote new osteogenesis around titanium implant bone and had no toxic effects on heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney tissues. Plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT) employing plasmonic gold nanorods (GNRs) presents a potent strategy for eradication of tumors including aggressive brain gliomas. Despite its promise, there is a pressing need for a more comprehensive evaluation of PPTT using sophisticated in vitro models that closely resemble tumor tissues, thereby facilitating the elucidation of therapeutic mechanisms. In this study, we exposed 3D glioma spheroids (tumoroids) to (16-mercaptohexadecyl)trimethylammonium bromide-functionalized gold nanorods (MTAB-GNRs) and a near-infrared (NIR) laser. We demonstrate that the photothermal effect can be fine-tuned by adjusting the nanoparticle concentration and laser power. Depending on the selected parameters, the laser can trigger either regulated or non-regulated cell death (necrosis) in both mouse GL261 and human U-87 MG glioma cell lines, accompanied by translocation of phosphatidylserine in the membrane. Our investigation into the mechanism of regulated cell death induced by PPTT revealed an absence of markers associated with classical apoptosis pathways, such as cleaved caspase 3. Instead, we observed the presence of cleaved caspase 1, gasdermin D, and elevated levels of NLRP3 in NIR-irradiated tumoroids, indicating the activation of pyroptosis. This finding correlates with previous observations of lysosomal accumulation of MTAB-GNRs and the known lysosomal pathway of pyroptosis activation. We further confirmed the absence of toxic breakdown products of GNRs using electron microscopy, which showed no melting or fragmentation of gold nanoparticles under the conditions causing regulated cell death. Herein we report a wearable sweat sensor of a Janus fabric based on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology, mainly detecting the two important metabolites glucose and lactate. Janus fabric is composed of electrospinning PU on a piece of medical gauze (cotton), working as the unidirectional moisture transport component (R = 1305%) to collect and transfer sweat efficiently. SERS tags with different structures act as the probe to recognize and detect the glucose and lactate in high sensitivity. Core-shell structured gold nanorods with DTNB inside (AuNRs@DTNB@Au) are used to detect lactate, while gold nanorods with MPBA (AuNRs@MPBA) are used to detect glucose. Through the characteristic SERS information, two calibration functions were established for the concentration determination of glucose and lactate. The concentrations of glucose and lactate in sweat of a 23 years volunteer during three-stage interval running are tested to be 95.5, 53.2, 30.5 μM and 4.9, 13.9, 10.8 mM, indicating the glucose (energy) consumption during exercise and the rapid accumulation of lactate at the early stage accompanied by the subsequent relief. Gold nanorods (GNR) produce heat upon irradiation with near-infrared light, enabling a tumor-targeted photothermal therapy. In this study, we prepared GNR coated with sulfated hyaluronic acid (sHA) with a binding affinity for CD44 via electrostatic interactions to deliver GNR to tumors efficiently and stably, and evaluated their usefulness for photothermal therapy. Cationic GNR modified with trimethylammonium groups electrostatically interacted with native HA or sHA with varying degrees of sulfation to form complexes. While GNR/HA was unstable in saline, GNR/sHA maintained the absorbance peak in the near-infrared region, particularly for GNR/sHA with higher degrees of sulfation. GNR/sHA exhibited an intense photothermal effect upon irradiation with near-infrared light. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo studies revealed that GNR coated with sHA containing approximately 1.2 sulfated groups per HA unit could accumulate in CD44-positive tumors via an HA-specific pathway. The development of cost-effective and highly efficient electrocatalysts is critical to help electrochemical non-enzymatic sensors achieve high performance. Here, a new class of catalyst, Ru single atoms confined on Cu nanotubes as a single-atom alloy (Ru 1 Cu NTs), with a unique electronic structure and property, was developed to construct a novel electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor for the first time. The Ru 1 Cu NTs with a diameter of about 24.0 nm showed a much lower oxidation potential (0.38 V) and 9.0-fold higher response (66.5 μA) current than Cu nanowires (Cu NWs, oxidation potential 0.47 V and current 7.4 μA) for glucose electrocatalysis. Moreover, as an electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor, Ru 1 Cu NTs not only exhibited twofold higher sensitivity (54.9 μA mM -1  cm -2 ) and wider linear range (0.5-8 mM) than Cu NWs, but also showed a low detection limit (5.0 μM), excellent selectivity, and great stability. According to theoretical calculation results, the outstanding catalytic and sensing performance of Ru 1 Cu NTs could be ascribed to the upshift of the d-band center that helped promote glucose adsorption. For the direct alkaline oxidation of rice husk lignin, we developed a copper foam-based heterogeneous catalyst that offers advantages in its recovery after the reaction mixture. The depolymerized products were utilized for muconate production by an engineered Pseudomonas sp. NGC7-based strain. A hydroxide nanorod-modified copper foam was prepared by the surface oxidation of copper foam, followed by alkaline oxidation of rice husk lignin over the catalyst. The catalyst was easily separated from the cellulosic residues in the reaction mixture, and the residues were then recovered by filtration. The resulting lignin stream was composed of a variety of aromatic monomers containing p-hydroxyphenyl, guaiacyl, and syringyl compounds. The catabolic activity of Pseudomonas sp. NGC7 was demonstrated to be more suitable for muconate production from a mixture comprising 4-hydroxybenzoate (a typical p-hydroxyphenyl compound), vanillate (a guaiacyl compound), and syringate (a syringyl compound), owing to its natural ability to grow on syringate. Thus, it was applied to produce muconate from a rice husk lignin stream prepared through hydroxide nanorod-modified copper foam-catalyzed alkaline oxidation by conferring the genes responsible for converting the acetophenone derivatives to their corresponding aromatic acids and protocatechuate decarboxylase to an NGC7-based strain deficient in protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase and muconate cycloisomerase. Due to the pathogen-specific targeting, neutralization capabilities, and enduring efficacy, neutralizing antibodies (NAs) have received widespread attentions as a critical immunotherapeutic strategy against infectious viruses. However, because of the high variability and complexity of pathogens, rapid determination of neutralization activity of antiviral antibodies remains a challenge. Here, we report a new method, named as out-of-plane polarization imaging based single-particle rotational sensing, for rapid analysis of neutralization activity of antiviral antibody against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Using the spike protein functionalized gold nanorods (AuNRs) and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as the rotational sensors and chaperone probes, we demonstrated the single-particle rotational sensing strategy for the measurement of rotational diffusion coefficient of the chaperone-bound rotational sensors caused by the specific spike protein-ACE2 interactions. This enables us to measure the neutralizing activity of neutralizing antibody from the analysis of dose-dependent changes in rotational diffusion coefficient (Dr) of the rotational sensors upon the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 antibody. With this technique, we achieved the quantitative determination of neutralization activity of a commercially available SARS-CoV-2 antibody (IC50, 294.1 ng/mL) with satisfying accuracy and anti-interference ability. Introduction: In this study, the effects of adding titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO 2 ) to 3D-printed denture base resin on the mechanical and physical properties of denture bases were examined for the first time., Methods: The specimens were digitally created using 3D builder software from Microsoft Corporation through computer-aided design. In accordance with the test specifications for transverse strength, impact strength, hardness, surface roughness, and color stability, specimens were designed and printed with certain dimensions following relevant standards. TiO 2 nanotubes (diameter: 15-30 nm and length: 2-3 μm) were added to the 3D-printed denture base resin (DentaBase, Asiga, Australia) at 1.0% and 1.5% by weight. Flexural strength, impact strength (Charpy impact), hardness, surface roughness, and color stability were evaluated, and the collected data were analyzed with ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test (α = 0.05). Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) mapping were used to evaluate the dispersion of the nanotubes., Results: Compared with those of the control group (0.0 wt.% TiO 2 nanotubes), the average flexural, impact, and hardness values of the 1.0 and 1.5 wt.% TiO 2 nanotube reinforcement groups increased significantly. Both nanocomposite groups showed significant color changes compared to that of the pure resin, and there was a considerable reduction in the surface roughness of the nanocomposites compared to that of the control group., Conclusion: Adding TiO 2 nanotubes to 3D-printed denture base materials at 1.0 and 1.5 wt.% could enhance the mechanical and physical properties of the material, leading to better clinical performance., Clinical Significance: In terms of clinical applications, 3D-printed denture base material has been shown to be a viable substitute for traditional heat-cured materials. Neurodegenerative diseases have a profound impact on vision, leading to conditions such as glaucoma, optic neuropathy, and diabetic retinopathy, affecting millions worldwide. These diseases are characterized by the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), resulting in a progressive loss of visual acuity and field, with the threat of irreversible blindness. However, existing treatments, such as eye drops, direct injections, and laser surgeries face significant challenges due to limited efficacy and potential infection. The inefficiency of traditional corneal drug delivery methods is a major obstacle in treating vision neurodegenerative diseases. To address these challenges, we developed a remotely triggered on-demand liposomal delivery system to treat glaucomatous neurodegeneration in mice. We utilized the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of gold nanorods (AuNRs) under near-infrared (NIR) light (808 nm) to control the release of cyclodextrin-encapsulated melatonin from thermally responsive liposomal nanocarriers in the vitreous humor. Due to the transparency of the eye's cornea, NIR light can penetrate deep tissues, enabling on-demand drug delivery to the retina. By enhancing the drug's solubility and stability through cyclodextrin encapsulation, this remotely activated melatonin/HPβCD AuNRs liposomes delivery system can decrease intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation by (24 ± 7)%, enhance the survival rate of RGCs by (77 ± 6)%, and decrease glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) activation by (75 ± 6)% at depth in an acute experimental glaucoma model. This NIR-triggered drug delivery system presents the potential of a promising minimally photo-triggered therapeutic option for glaucoma treatment.

This study investigated the application of a hybrid nanocomposite of tin oxide nanorods (SnO 2 NRs) and graphene oxide (GO) for the chemoresistive detection of some volatile compounds (hexanal, benzaldehyde, octanal, 1-octanol, and ethyl acetate vapours) emitted by Aspergillus flavus under simulated conditions. The synthesised materials were characterised using various analytical techniques, including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Three sensors were fabricated: individual nanomaterials (i.e., SnO 2 and GO) and composites (SnO 2 -GO). The results showed that SnO 2 NRs had limited sensitivity as a sensor, while GO-based sensors responded to various analyte vapours. However, the incorporation of SnO 2 NRs into GO layers resulted in synergistic effects and improved sensor performance. The sensors' sensitivity, selectivity, recovery, and response times were quantitatively determined from the sensors' response curves. The nanocomposite sensor demonstrated superior sensitivity and selectivity for analyte vapours with acceptable response and recovery times. In addition, the sensor was insensitive to humidity and showed robust performance up to 62% RH, although sensor drift occurred at 70% RH. Treating lung and prostate cancer cells is a major health problem that may be solved through the interactions of laser beams with nanoparticles. In the paper, Au-H 2 Ti 3 O 7 nanotubes (NTs) are proposed as a treatment agent and the interactions of different laser beams with the nanostructure are considered to solve the mentioned health problem. Also, the NTs are employed to treat the cancers in dark conditions. The results are motivating because Au-H 2 Ti 3 O 7 NPs do not affect healthy cells, while they strongly affect cancer cells, and the viability percentage of LNCap cells reaches 16% for incubation times of 48 h. Furthermore, treating LNCap cells using the irradiated Au-H 2 Ti 3 O 7 NTs by NIR beam at 808 nm has no cytotoxicity, while cytotoxicity of 92% is obtained using an irradiation laser beam at 532 nm. Also, applying the laser beam at 635 nm to the NTs leads to a cytotoxicity of ∼53% in lung cancer (A549 cells). In total, the Au-H 2 Ti 3 O 7 NTs have a selective effect on cancer cells and greatly reduce the viability in the given dark and irradiation conditions, leading to the introduction of them as a promising agent for the non-invasive treatment of prostate cancer and a moderate candidate for lung cancer therapy., (© 2024. The fabrications of hollow microcapsules (MCs) with new architecture and ability to incorporate different nanomaterials have received great interest for targeted cancer therapy. Recently, CuS based nanomaterials have been demonstrated to possess the ability to mimic Fenton-like activity in tumor environment and inducing cancer cell apoptosis by generating highly reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we have developed poly(allylamine) hydrochloride (PAH)/dextran sulfate (DS) polyelectrolyte MCs capable of carrying doxorubicin (DOX) for targeted cancer therapy and ultrasound imaging. The electron microscopy investigations showed the formation of polymeric MCs of 3 µm in size with incorporated CuS NRs in their interior structure. The surface modification of MCs with folic acid (FA), and encapsulation of model hydrophilic molecules in MCs was studied by UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The encapsulation efficiency of DOX was found to be 56 % and the release was found to be linear at pH 5.5 and 7.4 in the absence of ultrasound exposure. The ultrasound exposure resulted in sudden rupture of MCs at 1 MHz and 1 W/cm 2 and caused burst release of DOX at both pH conditions. The FA decorated PAH/DS/CuS NR MCs exhibited improved anti-cancer activity against MDA-MB-231 cancer cells due to the synergistic effects of ultrasound mediated burst release of chemotherapeutic drug (DOX), glutathione-stimulated ROS and targeted cancer therapy. The photochemical generation of nicotinamide cofactor 1,4-NADH, facilitated by inorganic photosensitizers, emerges as a promising model system for investigating charge transfer phenomena at the interface of semiconductors and bacteria, with implications for enhancing photosynthetic biohybrid systems (PBSs). However, extant semiconductor nanocrystal model systems suffer from achieving optimal conversion efficiency under visible light. This study investigates quasi-one-dimensional CdS nanorods as superior light absorbers, surface modified with catalyst Cp*Rh(4,4'-COOH-bpy)Cl 2 to produce enzymatically active NADH. This model subsystem facilitates easy product isolation and achieves a turnover frequency (TOF) of 175 h -1 , one of the highest efficiencies reported for inorganic photosensitizer-based nicotinamide cofactor generation. Charge transfer kinetics, fundamental for catalytic solar energy conversion, range from 10 6 to 10 8 s -1 for this system highlighting the superior electron transfer capabilities of NRs. This model ensures efficient cofactor production and offers critical insights into advancing systems that mimic natural photosynthesis for sustainable solar-to-chemical synthesis.

Background: Large-diameter titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) have shown promise in preserving osteoblast function under oxidative stress (OS) in vitro. However, their ability to enhance osteogenesis in vivo under OS conditions and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear., Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the osteogenic potential of 110 nm TNTs (TNT110) compared to 30 nm TNTs (TNT30) in an aging rat model exhibiting OS, and to investigate the mechanisms involved., Methods: Surface properties of TNTs were characterized, and in vitro and in vivo experiments were conducted to assess their osteoinductive effects under OS. Transcriptomic, proteomic analyses, and Western blotting were performed to investigate the protective mechanisms of TNT110 on osteoblasts. Protein adsorption studies focused on the roles of fibronectin (FN) and albumin (BSA) in modulating osteoblast behavior on TNT110., Results: In both in vitro and in vivo experiments, TNT110 significantly improved new bone formation and supported osteoblast survival under OS conditions. Subsequent ribonucleic acid sequencing results indicated that TNT110 tended to attenuate inflammatory responses and reactive oxygen species (ROS) expression while promoting endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and extracellular matrix receptor interactions, all of which are crucial for osteoblast survival and functionality. Further confirmation indicated that the cellular behavior changes of osteoblasts in the TNT110 group could only occur in the presence of serum. Moreover, proteomic analysis under OS conditions revealed the pivotal roles of FN and BSA in augmenting TNT110's resistance to OS. Surface pretreatment of TNT110 with FN/BSA alone could beneficially influence the early adhesion, spreading, ER activity, and ROS expression of osteoblasts, a trend not observed with TNT30., Conclusion: TNT110 effectively protects osteoblast function in the OS microenvironment by modulating protein adsorption, with FN and BSA synergistically enhancing osteogenesis. Modular protein engineering is a powerful approach for fabricating high-molecular-weight assemblies and biomaterials with nanoscale precision. Herein, we address the challenge of designing an extended nanoscale filamentous architecture inspired by the central rod domain of human dystrophin, which protects sarcolemma during muscle contraction and consists of spectrin repeats composed of three-helical bundles. A module of three tandem spectrin repeats was used as a rigid building block self-assembling via coiled-coil (CC) dimer-forming peptides. CC peptides were precisely integrated to maintain the spectrin α-helix continuity in an appropriate frame to form extended nanorods. An orthogonal set of customizable CC heterodimers was harnessed for modular rigid domain association, which could be additionally regulated by metal ions and chelators. We achieved a robust assembly of rigid rods several micrometers in length, determined by atomic force microscopy and negative stain transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, these rigid rods can serve as a scaffold for the decoration of diverse proteins or biologically active peptides along their length with adjustable spacing up to tens of nanometers, as confirmed by the DNA-PAINT super-resolution microscopy. This demonstrates the potential of modular bottom-up protein engineering and tunable CCs for the fabrication of functionalized protein biomaterials.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) levels play a vital role in redox regulation and maintaining the physiological balance of living cells, especially in cell mechanotransduction. Despite the achievements on strain-induced cellular H 2 O 2 monitoring, the applied voltage for H 2 O 2 electrooxidation possibly gave rise to an abnormal expression and inadequate accuracy, which was still an inescapable concern. Hence, we decorated an interlaced CuO@TiO 2 nanowires (NWs) semiconductor meshwork onto a polydimethylsiloxane film-supported gold nanotubes substrate (Au NTs/PDMS) to construct a flexible photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform. Under white light irradiation, CuO@TiO 2 NWs synergistically exhibited great stretchability and the PEC platform enabled stable photocurrent responses from the reduction of H 2 O 2 even during mechanical deformation. Moreover, the admirable biocompatibility and an almost negligible open circuit voltage of +0.18 V for the CuO@TiO 2 NWs/Au NTs/PDMS sensor guaranteed human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) adhesion tightly thereon even under continuous illumination for 30 min. Finally, the as-proposed stretchable PEC sensor achieved sensitive and true-to-life monitoring of transient H 2 O 2 release during HUVECs deformation, in which H 2 O 2 release was positively correlated to mechanical strains. This investigation opens a new shade path on in situ cellular sensing and meanwhile greatly expands the application mode of the PEC approach.

Infections resulting from microorganisms pose an ongoing global public health challenge, necessitating the constant development of novel antimicrobial approaches. Utilizing photocatalytic materials to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) presents an appealing strategy for combating microbial threats. In alignment with this perspective, sodium titanate nanotubes were prepared by scalable hydrothermal method using TiO 2 and NaOH. Ag, Au, and Ag/Au-modified titanate nanotubes (TNTs) were prepared by a cost-effective and simple ion-exchange method. All samples were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, HRTEM, and DLS techniques. HRTEM images indicated that the tubular structure was preserved in all TNTs even after the replacement of Na + with Ag + and/or Au 3+ ions. The antibacterial activity in dark and sunlight conditions was evaluated using different bacterial strains, Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa . The results showed that while a low bacterial count (∼log 5 cells per well) was used for inoculation, the TNTs exhibited no antibacterial activity against the three bacterial strains, regardless of whether they were tested under light or dark conditions. However, the plasmonic nanoparticle-decorated TNTs showed remarkable activity in the dark. Additionally, Ag/Au-TNTs demonstrated significantly higher activity in the dark compared with either Ag-TNTs or Au-TNTs alone. Notably, under dark conditions, the Au/Ag-TNTs achieved log reductions of up to 4.5 for P. aeruginosa , 5 for S. aureus , and 3.7 for E. coli . However, when exposed to sunlight, Au/Ag-TNTs resulted in a complete reduction (log reduction ∼9) for P. aeruginosa and E. coli . The combination of two plasmonic nanoparticles (Ag/Au) decorated on the surface of TNTs showed synergetic bactericidal activity under both dark and light conditions. Ag/Au-TNTs could be explored to design surfaces that are responsive to visible light and exhibit antimicrobial properties.

Localized delivery of inflammasome inhibitors in phagocytic macrophages could be promising for psoriasis treatment. The present work demonstrates the development of non-spherical lipid nanoparticles, mimicking pathogen-like shapes, consisting of an anti-inflammatory inflammasome inhibiting lipid (pyridoxine dipalmitate) as a trojan horse. The nanorods inhibit inflammasome by 3.8- and 4.5-fold compared with nanoellipses and nanospheres, respectively. Nanorods reduce apoptosis-associated speck-like protein and lysosomal rupture, restrain calcium influx, and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species. Dual inflammasome inhibitor (NLRP3/AIM-2-IN-3) loaded nanorods cause synergistic inhibition by 21.5- and 59-folds compared with nanorods and free drug, respectively alongside caspase-1 inhibition. The NLRP3/AIM-2-IN-3 nanorod when transformed into a polymeric scaffold, simultaneously and effectively inhibits RNA levels of NLRP3, AIM2, caspase-1, chemokine ligand-2, gasdermin-D, interleukin-1β, toll-like receptor 7/ 8, and IL-17A by 6.4-, 1.6-, 2.0-, 13.0-, 4.2-, 24.4-, 4.3-, and 1.82-fold, respectively in psoriatic skin in comparison to Imiquimod positive control group in an in-vivo psoriasis-like mice model., (© 2024. Human full-length (fl) αSyn fibrils, key neuropathological hallmarks of Parkinson's disease (PD), generate intense optical activity corresponding to the surface plasmon resonance of interacting gold nanorods. Herein, we analysed fibril-enriched protein extracts from mouse and human brain samples as well as from SK-N-SH cell lines with or without human fl and C-terminally truncated (Ctt) αSyn overexpression and exposed them to αSyn monomers, recombinant fl αSyn fibrils or Ctt αSyn fibrils. In vitro -generated human recombinant fl and Ctt αSyn fibrils and fibrils purified from SK-N-SH cells with fl or Ctt αSyn overexpression were also analysed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to gain insights into the nanorod-fibril complexes. We found that under the same experimental conditions, bisignate circular dichroism (CD) spectra of Ctt αSyn fibrils exhibited a blue-wavelength shift compared to that of fl αSyn fibrils. TEM results supported that this could be attributed to the different properties of nanorods. In our experimental conditions, fibril-enriched PD brain extract broadened the longitudinal surface plasmonic band with a bisignate CD couplet centred corresponding to the absorption band maximum. Plasmonic CD (PCD) couplets of in vivo - and in vitro -generated fibrils displayed sign reversal, suggesting their opposite handedness. Moreover, the incubation of in vitro -generated human recombinant fl αSyn fibrils in mouse brain extracts from αSyn null mice resulted in PCD couplet inversion, indicating that the biological environment may shape the handedness of αSyn fibrils. These findings support that nanorod-based PCD can provide useful information on the composition and features of αSyn fibrils from biological materials.

Gold nanorods (GNRs) are unique nanoparticles with easily functionalized surfaces, multiple synthesis methods, photothermal conversion, and surface plasmon resonance effects. These properties make GNRs suitable for various biological applications. However, a rapid synthesis of GNRs using less toxic chemicals is needed. The photochemical method is a viable option that can synthesize GNRs quickly while using fewer chemicals. A photochemical method is reported for the synthesis of GNRs using Irgacure-2959 as a reducing agent. This method could be used to synthesize GNRs with a rod-like shape within 30 min. Additionally, GNRs were coated with sericin (GNRs-SC) to further reduce their toxicity in human dermal fibroblast adult cells. Low-level near-infrared (NIR) light was applied to enhance the photothermal therapy of both GNRs and GNRs-SC. The results showed that GNRs and GNRs-SC under low-level NIR light have enhanced antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , as well as antibiofilm activity against S. aureus . Furthermore, GNRs-SC showed good biocompatibility with antibacterial and antibiofilm activities. These results indicate that GNRs-SC are good candidates for various biological applications.

Bradyarrhythmia, a life-threatening cardiovascular disease, is an increasing burden for the healthcare system. Currently, surgery, implanted device, and drug are introduced to treat the bradyarrhythmia in clinical practice. However, these conventional therapeutic strategies suffer from the invasive surgery, power supply, or drug side effect, respectively, hence developing the alternative therapeutic strategy is necessarily imperative. Here, a convenient and effective strategy to treat the bradyarrhythmia is proposed using near-infrared-triggered Au nanorod (NR) based plasmonic photothermal effect (PPE). Moreover, electrophysiology of cardiomyocytes is dynamically monitored by the integrated biosensing-regulating system during and after the treatment. Cardiomyocyte-based bradyarrhythmia recover rhythmic for a long time by regulating plasmonic photothermal effect. Furthermore, the regulatory mechanism is qualitatively investigated to verify the significant thermal stimulation in the recovery process. Quercetin (QR) is a natural flavonoid with strong anti-inflammatory properties, but it suffers from poor water solubility and bioavailability. Micro/nanomotors (NMs) are tiny devices that convert external energy or chemical fuels into an autonomous motion. They are characterized by their small size, rapid movement, and self-assembly capabilities, which can enhance the delivery of bioactive ingredients. The study synthesized natural polysaccharide-based nanotubes (NTs) using a layer-by-layer self-assembly method and combined with urease (Ure), glucose oxidase (GOx), and Fe 3 O 4 to create three types of NMs. These NMs were well-dispersed and biocompatible. In vitro experiments showed that NMs-Fe 3 O 4 has excellent photothermal conversion properties and potential for use in photothermal therapy. Cellular inflammation model results demonstrated that QR-loaded NMs were not only structurally stable but also improved bioavailability and effectively inhibited the release of inflammatory mediators such as IL-1β and IL-6, providing a safe and advanced carrier system for the effective use of bioactive components in food.

Bacteria-infected wounds and antibiotic misuse have become a challenge in the treatment of clinical infections. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design non-antibiotic-dependent multifunctional wound dressings for the treatment of bacterially infected wounds. In this study, an injectable antibacterial hydrogel (pAMPS-Cl/AuNR@HA-DA) based on gold nanorods (AuNR) and N -halamine (pAMPS-Cl) with significant photothermal antibacterial properties was developed. The obtained pAMPS-Cl/AuNR@HA-DA hydrogel showed a sponge-like structure with excellent injectability, self-healing, tissue adhesion, and good hemocompatibility. In addition, the hydrogel exhibited excellent in vitro antibacterial capacity under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation through the synergistic action of photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemical release therapy. It also showed an excellent ability to eliminate bacterial infection and promote wound healing, indicating that the pAMPS-Cl/AuNR@HA-DA composite hydrogel could be a promising dressing for the treatment of skin wounds.

In this work, we report the design and fabrication of a light-addressable, paper-based nanocomposite scaffold for optical pacing and read-out of in vitro grown cardiac tissue. The scaffold consists of paper cellulose microfibers functionalized with gold nanorods (GNRs) and semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), embedded in a cell-permissive collagen matrix. The GNRs enable cardiomyocyte activity modulation through local temperature gradients induced by modulated near-infrared (NIR) laser illumination, with the local temperature changes reported by temperature-dependent QD photoluminescence (PL). The micrometer-sized paper fibers promote the tubular organization of HL-1 cardiac muscle cells, while the NIR plasmonic stimulation modulates reversibly their activity. Given the nanoscale spatial resolution and facile fabrication, paper-based nanocomposite scaffolds with NIR modulation offer excellent alternatives to electrode-based or optogenetic methods for cell activity modulation, at the single cell level, and are compatible with 3D tissue constructs. Such paper-based optical platforms can provide new possibilities for the development of in vitro drug screening assays and heart disease modeling.

Background: On-site monitoring of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), homovanillic acid (HVA), and dopamine (DA) as key diagnostic biomarkers for a wide range of neurological disorders holds utmost significance in clinical settings. Numerous colorimetric sensors with mechanistic approaches based on aggregation or silver metallization have been introduced for this purpose. However, these mechanisms have drawbacks, such as sensitivity to environmental factors and probe toxicity. Therefore, there is a great demand for a robust yet non-toxic colorimetric sensor that employs a novel route to monitor these biomarkers effectively., Results: Here, we present a single-component multi-colorimetric probe based on the controllable etching suppression of gold nanorods (AuNRs) upon exposure to the mild etchant N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), designed to accurately detect and discriminate VMA, HVA, DA, and their corresponding mixtures, i.e., , Vma: HVA, VMA:DA, HVA:DA, and VMA:HVA:DA. To enhance the sensitivity and automation capabilities of the designed multi-colorimetric sensor, two machine learning techniques were employed: linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for the qualitative classification and partial least-squares regression (PLSR) for the quantitative analysis of pure biomarkers and their mixtures. The outcomes revealed a high correlation between measured and predicted values, covering a linear range of 0.8-25, 1.2-25, and 2.7-100 μmol L -1 , with remarkably low detection limits of 0.260, 0.397, and 0.913 μmol L -1 for VMA, HVA, and DA, respectively. It is a challenge to determine selenium in acid aqueous for environmental monitoring and selenium-rich agricultural diagnosis. Herein, we developed a novel localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor to detect Se(IV) ions based on the extraordinary laterals etching of gold nanorods (AuNRs). The etching started from the laterals in the low amount of Se(IV) ions, and accompanied by an apparent red shift of the longitudinal plasmon band (LPB), and then transformed to the tips etching with the upward of Se(IV) ions, the LPB band immediately shifted to the shorter wavelength. The red shift change (Δλ) of LPB band was utilized to quantitative analysis instead of blue shift or absorbance intensity, which gave a high selectivity for the proposed sensor. More importantly, this sensor could be performed in 0.1 mol/L of HCl solution, which achieved the seamlessly jointing with the pretreatment of complex samples, without time-consuming pH adjustment.Successful selenium detection was demonstrated in complex soybean samples that collected from the maturity after spraying organic chelated selenium at full flower period. Chiral analysis with simple devices is of great importance for analytical chemistry. Based on the photothermal (PT) effect, a simple chiral sensor with a portable laser device as the light source and a thermometer as the detection tool was developed for the chiral recognition of tryptophan (Trp) isomers and the sensitive sensing of one isomer (L-Trp). Gold nanorods (GNRs), which have outstanding photo-thermal conversion ability due to their localized surface plasma resonance (LSPR) effect, are used as PT reagents, and biomacromolecules bovine serum albumin (BSA) are used as natural chiral sources, and thus, GNRs@BSA was obtained through Au-S bonds. The resultant GNRs@BSA displays higher affinity toward L-Trp than D-Trp owing to the inherent chirality of BSA. Under the irradiation of near-infrared (NIR) light, the temperature of GNRs@BSA//L-Trp is greatly lower than that of GNRs@BSA//D-Trp due to its greatly decreased thermal conductivity, and thus chiral discrimination of Trp isomers can be achieved. Mitochondrial transfer is a normal physiological phenomenon that occurs widely among various types of cells. In the study to date, the most important pathway for mitochondrial transport is through tunneling nanotubes (TNTs). There have been many studies reporting that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can transfer mitochondria to other cells by TNTs. However, few studies have demonstrated the phenomenon of bidirectional mitochondrial transfer. Here, our protocol describes an experimental approach to study the phenomenon of mitochondrial transfer between MSCs and retinal pigment epithelial cells in vitro by two mitochondrial tracing methods. We co-cultured mito-GFP-transfected MSCs with mito-RFP-transfected ARPE19 cells (a retinal pigment epithelial cell line) for 24 h. Then, all cells were stained with phalloidin and imaged by confocal microscopy. We observed mitochondria with green fluorescence in ARPE19 cells and mitochondria with red fluorescence in MSCs, indicating that bidirectional mitochondrial transfer occurs between MSCs and ARPE19 cells. This phenomenon suggests that mitochondrial transport is a normal physiological phenomenon that also occurs between MSCs and ARPE19 cells, and mitochondrial transfer from MSCs to ARPE19 cells occurs much more frequently than vice versa. Our results indicate that MSCs can transfer mitochondria into retinal pigment epithelium, and similarly predict that MSCs can fulfill their therapeutic potential through mitochondrial transport in the retinal pigment epithelium in the future. Additionally, mitochondrial transfer from ARPE19 cells to MSCs remains to be further explored.

Living cells regulate the dynamics of developmental events through interconnected signaling systems that activate and deactivate inert precursors. This suggests that similarly, synthetic biomaterials could be designed to develop over time by using chemical reaction networks to regulate the availability of assembling components. Here we demonstrate how the sequential activation or deactivation of distinct DNA building blocks can be modularly coordinated to form distinct populations of self-assembling polymers using a transcriptional signaling cascade of synthetic genes. Our building blocks are DNA tiles that polymerize into nanotubes, and whose assembly can be controlled by RNA molecules produced by synthetic genes that target the tile interaction domains. To achieve different RNA production rates, we use a strategy based on promoter "nicking" and strand displacement. By changing the way the genes are cascaded and the RNA levels, we demonstrate that we can obtain spatially and temporally different outcomes in nanotube assembly, including random DNA polymers, block polymers, and as well as distinct autonomous formation and dissolution of distinct polymer populations. Our work demonstrates a way to construct autonomous supramolecular materials whose properties depend on the timing of molecular instructions for self-assembly, and can be immediately extended to a variety of other nucleic acid circuits and assemblies., (© 2024. Biothiols, characterized by thiol groups, exhibit remarkable affinity for certain metals, playing pivotal roles in intracellular and extracellular biological processes. Fluctuations in their levels profoundly impact overall physiological health. Despite the development of various probes for biothiol detection and quantification, their inability to monitor thiol-to-disulfide state transitions persists as a limitation. Given their association with pathologies, early detection remains imperative. Gold nanorod (AuNR)-based colorimetric probes have garnered attention for their utility in visual diagnostic assays. Herein, we present a cost-effective, and sensitive multicolor ratio measuring probe enabling on-site simultaneous identification, discrimination, and quantification of essential biothiols─cysteine (CYS), glutathione (GSH), cystine (CYSS), and glutathione disulfide (GSSG)─while also quantifying thiol-to-disulfide ratios. Our investigation clarifies the probe's functionality, elucidating etching and antietching mechanisms based on sulfhydryl group coordination with Hg 2+ . This coordination impedes gold amalgam formation, facilitating discriminative detection via AuNR size and aspect ratio modulation, validated by transmission electron microscopy. Notably, distinct rainbow-like fingerprint patterns were discernible both visually and spectroscopically for the aforementioned biothiols and their respective thiol-to-disulfide ratios. Subsequent qualitative and quantitative analyses via linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and partial least squares regression revealed linear correlations over broad concentration ranges (CYS: 1.9-40 μmol L -1 , GSH: 3.2-200.0 μmol L -1 , CYSS: 2.0-70.0 μmol L -1 , GSSG: 3.7-100.0 μmol L -1 ), with detection limits of 0.66 μmol L -1 (CYS), 1.07 μmol L -1 (GSH), 0.69 μmol L -1 (CYSS), and 1.24 μmol L -1 (GSSG). Moreover, thiol-to-disulfide ratios exhibited linear patterns within 0.2-5 μmol L -1 , with detection limits of 0.13 and 0.09 μmol L -1 , and exceptional analytical sensitivities of 32.648 and 49.782 for (CYS/CYSS) and (GSH/GSSG), respectively. Dopaminergic agents are compounds that modulate dopamine-related activity in the brain and peripheral nerves within the pathways on both sides of the blood-brain barrier. Atypical levels of them can precipitate a multitude of neurological disorders, whose timely diagnosis signifies not only stopping the advancement of the illness but also surmounting it. A silver metallized gold nanorod (AuNRs) conditional sensor array, designed to detect dopaminergic agents for assessing nervous system disorders, yielded significant results in simultaneous detection and discrimination of Benserazide (Benz), Levodopa (L-DOPA), and Carbidopa (Carb). The array was composed of two different concentrations of silver ions as sensor elements (SEs), which generated unique signatures indicative of the presence of reductive target analytes, triggered by the incongruent formation of the Au@Ag core-shell, causing visual and fingerprint colorimetric patterns. Generating diverse responses is the key to the functionality of array-based sensing, which facilitated achieving spectral and color variation originating from the blue shift of AuNRs longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LLSPR) in the extinction spectrum. Also, employing a smartphone camera enables clear visual discrimination across an extensive concentration span. Pattern recognition through linear discriminant analysis (LDA) underscored the robust discrimination accuracies of this sensor, along with quantification by means of partial least-squares regression (PLSR), affirming its potential for practical applications. Notably, the array demonstrated high sensitivity in detecting varied concentrations of target analytes, even in commercial drug samples. The sensor responses exhibited a linear correlation with the concentrations of Benz, L-DOPA, and Carb ranging from 1.59 to 100.0, 5.26 to 100.0, and 5.32 to 100.0 μmol L -1 , respectively, and the minimum detectable concentrations for Benz, L-DOPA, and Carb were measured at 0.53, 1.75, and 1.77 μmol L -1 , respectively. The implemented machine-learning-empowered array-based sensor represents advancements in dopaminergic agent tracing and naked eye detection.

In recent years, the demand for rare earth elements has surged due to their unique characteristics and diverse applications. This investigation focuses on utilizing the rare earth element dysprosium oxide (Dy 2 O 3 ) for the photocatalytic oxidation of model pollutants under solar light irradiation. A novel RGO-Dy 2 O 3 nanocomposite photocatalyst was developed using a solvothermal approach, Dy 2 O 3 nanorods uniformly deposited onto reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including Brunner-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, high resolution - transmittance electron microscopy (HR-TEM), field emission-electron scanning microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy EIS techniques. The UV-visible diffusive reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS) studies revealed a band gap energy of 3.18 eV and a specific surface area of 114 m 2 /g for the fabricated RGO-Dy 2 O 3 nanocomposite. The RGO-Dy 2 O 3 nanocomposite demonstrated a high photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 98.1% at neutral pH for methylene blue (MB) dye for the dye concentration of 10 ppm. The remarkable photocatalytic performance was achieved within 60 min under solar light irradiation. Reusability tests demonstrated stability, maintaining over 90% photocatalytic efficiency after three cycles. The EPR spectra and quenching experiments confirmed that photogenerated hydroxyl radicals significantly influence the photodegradation processes. The RGO-Dy 2 O 3 nanocomposite photocatalyst, with its green, easy preparation process and recycling capabilities, presents an ideal choice for various applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have the potential to efficiently carry cargo due to their excellent porosity and high surface area. Nevertheless, conventional MOFs and their derivatives exhibit low efficiency in transporting nucleic acids and other small molecules, as well as having poor colloidal stability. In this study, a ZIF-90 loaded with iron oxide nanoparticles and Au nanorods was prepared, and then surface-functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to create a multifunctional nanocomposite (AFZP25k) with pH, photothermal, and magnetic responsiveness. AFZP25k can condense plasmid DNA to form AFZP25k/DNA complexes, with a maximum binding efficiency of 92.85 %. DNA release assay showed significant light and pH responsiveness, with over 80 % cumulative release after 6 h of incubation. When an external magnetic field is applied, the cellular uptake efficiency in HeLa cells reached 81.51 %, with low cytotoxicity and specific distribution. In vitro transfection experiments demonstrated a gene transfection efficiency of 44.77 % in HeLa cells. Following near-infrared irradiation, the uptake efficiency and transfection efficiency of AFZP25k in HeLa cells increased by 21.3 % and 13.59 % respectively. To increase the therapeutic efficacy of nanoparticle (NP)-assisted photothermal therapy (PTT) and allow for a transition toward the clinical setting, it is pivotal to characterize the thermal effect induced in cancer cells and correlate it with the cell biological response, namely cell viability and cell death pathways. This study quantitatively evaluated the effects of gold nanorod (GNR)-assisted near-infrared (NIR) PTT on two different cancer cell lines, the 4T1 triple-negative breast cancer cells and the Pan02 pancreatic cancer cells. The interaction between nanomaterials and biological matrices was investigated in terms of GNR internalization and effect on cell viability at different GNR concentrations. GNR-mediated PTT was executed on both cell lines, at the same treatment settings to allow a straightforward comparison, and real-time monitored through thermographic imaging. A thermal analysis based on various parameters (i.e., maximum absolute temperature, maximum temperature change, temperature variation profile, area under the time-temperature change curve, effective thermal enhancement (ETE), and time constants) was performed to evaluate the treatment thermal outcome. While GNR treatment and NIR laser irradiation alone did not cause cell toxicity in the selected settings, their combination induced a significant reduction of cell viability in both cell lines. At the optimal experimental condition (i.e., 6 μg/mL of GNRs and 4.5 W/cm 2 laser power density), GNR-assisted PTT reduced the cell viability of 4T1 and Pan02 cells by 94% and 87% and it was associated with maximum temperature changes of 25 °C and 29 °C (i.e., ∼1.8-fold increase compared to the laser-only condition), maximum absolute temperatures of 55 °C and 54 °C, and ETE values of 78% and 81%, for 4T1 and Pan02 cells, correspondingly. Also, the increase in the GNR concentration led to a decrease in the time constants, denoting faster heating kinetics upon irradiation. Furthermore, the thermal analysis parameters were correlated with the extent of cell death. Twelve hours after NIR exposure, GNR-assisted PTT was found to mainly trigger secondary apoptosis in both cell lines. The proposed study provides relevant insights into the relationship between temperature history and biological responses in the context of PTT. A drop-casting method for the scalable construction of a solar cell-type light-addressable photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor on commercial phenol resin (PR) plates is reported. The sensor was fabricated by laser writing of addressable laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode arrays on PR plates with ring-disc dual-electrode cell configurations using a 405 nm laser machine. Beneficial from the good hydrophilicity of PR-based LIG and the excellent film formation of bismuth sulfide nanorods (Bi 2 S 3 NRs), uniform Bi 2 S 3 photovoltaic films can be reproducibly deposited onto the LIG disc photoanode array via drop casting modification, which show a sensitive photocurrent response toward thiocholine (TCl) when the ring cathode array was coated with Ag/AgCl. An acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-based PEC biosensor was therefore constructed by a similar drop-casting modification method. The resulting biosensor exhibits good sensitivity toward an AChE inhibitor, i.e., galantamine hydrobromide (GH), with a calibration range of 10-300 μM and a detection limit of 7.33 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the biosensor possesses good storage stability, which can achieve the high-throughput screening of AChE inhibitor drugs from traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs). Exosomes are promising therapeutics for tissue repair and regeneration to induce and guide appropriate immune responses in dystrophic pathologies. However, manipulating exosomes to control their biodistribution and targeting them in vivo to achieve adequate therapeutic benefits still poses a major challenge. Here we overcome this limitation by developing an externally controlled delivery system for primed annexin A1 myo-exosomes (Exo myo ). Effective nanocarriers are realized by immobilizing the Exo myo onto ferromagnetic nanotubes to achieve controlled delivery and localization of Exo myo to skeletal muscles by systemic injection using an external magnetic field. Quantitative muscle-level analyses revealed that macrophages dominate the uptake of Exo myo from these ferromagnetic nanotubes in vivo to synergistically promote beneficial muscle responses in a murine animal model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Our findings provide insights into the development of exosome-based therapies for muscle diseases and, in general, highlight the formulation of effective functional nanocarriers aimed at optimizing exosome biodistribution., (© 2024. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) imaging integrating photothermal and photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) is a promising approach for achieving accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of cancers. However, most available Raman reporters show multiple signals in the fingerprint region, which overlap with background signals from cellular biomolecules. Herein, a 4T1 cell membrane-enveloped gold nanorods-manganese porphyrins system (GMCMs) is designed and successfully fabricated as a biomimetic theranostic nanoplatform. Manganese porphyrins are adsorbed on the surface of Au nanorods via the terminal alkynyl group. Cell membrane encapsulation protects the manganese porphyrins from falling off the gold nanorods. The biomimetic GMCMs confirm specific homologous targeting to 4T1 cells with good dispersibility, excellent photoacoustic (PA) imaging properties, and preferable photothermal and 1 O 2 generation performance. GMCMs exhibit distinct SERS signals in the silent region without endogenous biomolecule interference both in vitro and in vivo. Manganese ions could not only quench the fluorescence of porphyrins to enhance the SERS imaging effect but also deplete cellular GSH to increase 1 O 2 yield. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that GMCMs effectively eradicate tumors through SERS/PA imaging-guided PTT/PDT. Developing an effective and user-friendly hemostatic agent is highly desired in the treatment of hemorrhage. Inspired by the natural nanostructure and abundant hydroxyl groups of cellulose and clay minerals, we designed an aerogel (HNTs/TOCNs) composed of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNs) with a hierarchical porous structure for the treatment of bleeding, using a simple and environmentally friendly self-assembly method. TOCNs formed a three-dimensional porous scaffold with excellent water-holding capacity. The incorporation of HNTs enhanced the hemostatic efficiency and mechanical properties of the 3D framework. The large interlayer spaces and wide channels within the HNTs/TOCNs aerogel provided rapid passage for blood, facilitating blood concentration and offering ample room for interactions between the HNTs/TOCNs aerogel and platelets, erythrocytes, and coagulation factors, thereby promoting hemostasis. Benefiting from the natural hemostatic properties and well-designed structure, the HNTs/TOCNs aerogel displayed excellent hemostatic performance both in vitro and in vivo. Notably, the hemostatic time of HNTs/TOCNs-2 was only 74 ± 8 s, which is approximately 50 % shorter than the blank control (151 ± 20 s) in liver femoral artery injury model. The development of smart systems for pesticidal delivery presents a significant advancement in enhancing the utilization efficiency of pesticides and mitigating environmental risks. Here an acid-responsive pesticidal delivery system using microspheres formed by the self-assembly of halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) is proposed. Insecticide avermectin (AVM) and herbicide prometryn (PMT) are used as two models of hydrophobic pesticide and encapsulated within the porous microspheres, followed by a coating of tannic acid/iron (TA/Fe III ) complex films to generate two controlled-release pesticides, named as HCEAT and HCEPT, resulting in the loading capacity of AVM and PMT being 113.3 and 120.3 mg g -1 , respectively. Both HCEAT and HCEPT exhibit responsiveness to weak acid, achieving 24 h-release ratios of 85.8% and 80.5% at a pH of 5.5. The experiment and simulation results indicate that the coordination interaction between EDTA 2- and Ca 2+ facilitates the spherical aggregation of HNTs. Furthermore, these novel pesticide formulations demonstrate better resistance against ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, higher foliar affinity, and less leaching effect, with negligible impact of the carrier material on plants and terrestrial organisms. Smart packaging material capable of real-time monitoring of food freshness is essential for ensuring food safe. At present, colorimetric ammonia-sensing smart film often possesses issues with complicated production, high cost, and inferior long-term colour stability. Herein, Zinc‑copper bimetallic organic framework (ZnCu-BTC, BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate acid) nanorods with colorimetric ammonia-responsiveness were synthesized by adopting facile aqueous solution method, which were then explored as nano inclusions in potato starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PS/PVA) composite film towards developing high-performance smart packaging material. The results demonstrated that the introduction of ZnCu-BTC nanorods within PS/PVA brought about remarkable improvement in blend compatibility, accompanied by a boost in tensile strength to 47.2 MPa, as well as enhanced ultraviolet (UV) blocking efficacy (over 95.0 %). Additionally, the barrier properties of PS/PVA film against water vapor and oxygen were fortified due to the addition of ZnCu-BTC. More importantly, the developed PS/PVA/ZnCu-BTC nanocomposite film displayed satisfactory antibacterial activity (over 99 %) against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), favorable colorimetric ammonia-sensing ability, and long-term colour stability. This study developed a multifunctional paper-based freshness antibacterial indicator card by dual-sided coating on conventional filter paper. The indicator coating was composed of anthocyanins from purple cabbage, and polyvinyl alcohol and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as substrates while the antibacterial coating contained halloysite nanotubes for loaded thyme essential oil and chitosan. FT-IR, XRD, and SEM analyses revealed that the components were well-mixed, and the paper was tightly bound to the coatings through hydrogen bonds. Additionally, the coating effectively filled the porous fiber gaps in the paper, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of the paper. The tensile strength of the coated paper was enhanced from 14.28 MPa to a range of 42.25-47.71 MPa, and the bending resistance was increased from 0.35 N·mm to a range of 1.72-1.99 N·mm compared to the uncoated paper. The addition of anthocyanins provided excellent sensitivity to pH and ammonia for the indicator card. Furthermore, the coating including halloysite nanotubes for loaded thyme essential oil exhibited antimicrobial resistance against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. When used on fresh carp, the antibacterial indicator card not only indicated the freshness of the carp but also extended the best before date of the fish meat by 1-2 days. The intracellular developmental processes in plants, particularly concerning lignin polymer formation and biomass production are regulated by microRNAs (miRNAs). MiRNAs including miR397b are important for developing efficient and cost-effective biofuels. However, traditional methods of monitoring miRNA expression, like PCR, are time-consuming, require sample extraction, and lack spatial and temporal resolution, especially in real-world conditions. We present a novel approach using plasmonics nanosensing to monitor miRNA activity within living plant cells without sample extraction. Plasmonic biosensors using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection offer high sensitivity and precise molecular information. We used the Inverse Molecular Sentinel (iMS) biosensor on unique silver-coated gold nanorods (AuNR@Ag) with a high-aspect ratio to penetrate plant cell walls for detecting miR397b within intact living plant cells. MiR397b overexpression has shown promise in reducing lignin content. Thus, monitoring miR397b is essential for cost-effective biofuel generation. This study demonstrates the infiltration of nanorod iMS biosensors and detection of non-native miRNA 397b within plant cells for the first time. The investigation successfully demonstrates the localization of nanorod iMS biosensors through TEM and XRF-based elemental mapping for miRNA detection within plant cells of Nicotiana benthamiana. The study integrates shifted-excitation Raman difference spectroscopy (SERDS) to decrease background interference and enhance target signal extraction. In vivo SERDS testing confirms the dynamic detection of miR397b in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves after infiltration with iMS nanorods and miR397b target. The quest to reduce kidney transplant rejection has emphasized the urgent requirement for the development of non-invasive, precise diagnostic technologies. These technologies aim to detect antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) and T-cell-mediated rejection (TCMR), which are asymptomatic and pose a risk of potential kidney damage. The protocols for managing rejection caused by ABMR and TCMR differ, and diagnosis has traditionally relied on invasive biopsy procedures. Therefore, a convergence system using a nano-sensing chip, Raman spectroscopy, and AI technology was introduced to facilitate diagnosis using serum samples obtained from patients with no major abnormality, ABMR, and TCMR after kidney transplantation. Tissue biopsy and Banff score analysis were performed across the groups for validation, and 5 μL of serum obtained at the same time was added onto the Au-ZnO nanorod-based Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering sensing chip to obtain Raman spectroscopy signals. The accuracy of machine learning algorithms for principal component-linear discriminant analysis and principal component-partial least squares discriminant analysis was 93.53% and 98.82%, respectively. Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are gaining immense attention among researchers owing to their admirable application potentials in various therapeutic events. Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has been recognized as one of the leading candidates in this category and holds wide interest within the scientific community. Among the various morphological nanoforms of TiO 2 , nanotube is grabbing remarkable attention as they have succeeded as an active vehicle in various medical procedures like intravascular stenting, drug delivery, as biosensors etc. This ultimately demands toxicity profiling of nanotubes in various aspects. Present study elaborates a concept through which acute toxicity profiling of TiO 2 nanotubes in adult Wistar rats is presented. TNTs were synthesized via solvo-thermal approach and surface coated with a biocompatible polymer; Pluronic-F127 (P-F127). This step assists in ameliorating the troubles associated with the nanomaterial dispersion stability. The experimental rats were intraperitoneally administered with TNT-P (10 mg/kg) and sacrificed on different time periods (3 rd , 7 th and 14 th days). Biodistribution of the material was tracked in major tissues including brain, liver, spleen and kidneys. A set of acute toxicity studies was performed which comprises hematology evaluation, biochemical studies, antioxidant detection, analysis of urine parameters, immune modulation study and histopathology evaluation. Many of the experiments revealed an unaltered physiological response in rats; except for some biochemical and hematology parameters. The COVID-19 pandemic presents global challenges, notably with co-infections in respiratory tract involving SARS-CoV-2 variants and influenza strains. Detecting multiple viruses simultaneously is crucial for accurate diagnosis, effective tracking infectious sources, and containment of the epidemic. This study uses a label-free surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method using Au NPs/pZrO 2 (250) and FIB-made Au NRs (100) to detect dual viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant (D) and influenza A (A) or B (B) virus. Results demonstrate distinct peaks facilitating virus differentiation, especially between D and A or B, with clear disparities between substrates; specific peaks at 950 and 1337 cm -1 are pivotal for discerning viruses using Au NPs/pZrO 2 (250), while those at 1050, 1394, and 1450 cm -1 and 1033, 1165, 1337, and 1378 cm -1 are key for validation using Au NRs (100). Differences in substrate surface morphology and spatial disposition of accommodating viruses significantly influence hotspot formation and Raman signal amplification efficiency, thereby affecting the ability to distinguish various viruses. Furthermore, both substrates offer insights, even in the presence of oxymetazoline hydrochloride (an interfering substance), with practical implications in viral diagnosis. Circulating tumor cell (CTC) in the blood is the main cause of cancer metastasis for death in cancer patients. It is extremely important for cancer diagnosis at an early stage and treatment to simultaneously detect and kill the CTCs. In this work, a new hybridized nanolayer, namely gold nanoparticle/gold nanorods@ Polydopamine (AuNPs/AuNRs@PDA), was coated on the Ω-shaped fiber optics (Ω-FO) for localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) to perform tumor cell sensing and photothermal treatment (PTT). The PDA nanolayer was formed on a bare fiber optic through the self-polymerization of dopamine under mild conditions. The AuNRs and AuNPs were absorbed on the surface of the PDA nanolayer to form a hybridized nanolayer. The hybridized nanolayer-modified Ω-FO LSPR exhibited a high refractive index sensitivity (RIS) of 37.59 (a.u/RIU) and photothermal conversion efficiency. After being modified with the recognition element of aptamer, the Ω-FO LSPR was used to develop a sensitive and specifical tumor cell sensing. Under the irradiation of near-infrared light (NIR) laser, the Ω-FO LSPR can kill the captured tumor cells with the apoptotic/necrotic rate of 62.6 % and low side-effect for the nontarget cells.
