Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) from plant biomass is becoming popular, attributed to the protective encapsulation of bioactive compounds in Pickering emulsion, preventing degradation and stabilizing the emulsion. NFC, as a natural dietary fiber, is a prominent fat replacer, providing a quality enhancement to reduced-fat products. In this study, NFC Pickering emulsions were prepared at NFC concentrations of 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1% to encapsulate carotenoids. The NFC Pickering emulsions at NFC concentrations of 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1% were incorporated into margarine-like reduced fat (3%) spreads as the aqueous phase. Characterization of both NFC Pickering emulsion and the incorporated NFC Pickering emulsion, margarine-like reduced fat spreads, was conducted with mastersizer, rheometer, spectrophotometer, and texture analyzer. The particle size (73.67 ± 0.35 to 94.73 ± 2.21 nm), viscosity (138.36 ± 3.35 to 10545.00 ± 567.10 mPa s), and creaming stability (25% to 100% stable) of the NFC Pickering emulsions were increased significantly when increasing the NFC concentration, whereas the encapsulation efficiency was highest at NFC 0.4% and 0.6%. Although imitating the viscoelastic solid-like behavior of margarine was difficult, the NFC Pickering emulsion properties were still able to enhance hardness, slip melting point, and color of the reduced fat spreads compared to the full-fat margarine, especially at 0.6% of NFC. Overall, extensive performances of NFC can be seen in encapsulating carotenoids, especially at NFC concentrations of 0.4% and 0.6%, with the enhancement of Pickering emulsion stability while portraying futuristic possibilities as a fat replacer in margarine optimally at 0.6% of NFC concentration. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Nanocellulose extracted from palm dried long fiber was utilized to encapsulate carotenoids and replace fats in margarine-like reduced fat (3%) spreads. Our study portrayed high encapsulation efficiency and successful fat replacement with promising stability performances. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are very promising materials with application in many fields, such as sensors, filtration systems, and energy storage devices. This study aims to explore the use of eco-friendly biopolymers for CNF production, finding novel, suitable and sustainable precursors and thus prioritising environmentally conscious processes and ecological compatibility. Polymeric nanofibers (PNFs) using cellulose acetate, polylactic acid, and chitosan as precursors were successfully prepared via electrospinning. Rheological testing was performed to determine suitable solution concentrations for the production of PNFs with controlled diameter and appropriate morphology. Their dimensions and structure were found to be significantly influenced by the solution concentration and electrospinning flow rate. Subsequently, the electrospun green nanofibers were subject to stabilisation and carbonisation to convert them into CNFs. Thermal behaviour and chemical/structural changes of the nanofibers during stabilisation were investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, while the final morphology of the fibers after stabilisation and carbonisation was examined through scanning electron microscopy to determine the optimal stabilisation parameters. Cellulose acetate (CA) is a non-toxic, renewable, and biodegradable polymeric material that can be effectively electrospuned into bacterial filtration efficient nanofiber membrane for face mask application. However, its fragile and non-antibacterial nature influenced its scalability. In this context, natural antibacterial gum rosin (GR) additive can be explored. Therefore, the present study aimed to produce a CA/GR composite nanofibers membrane for the finest bacterial filtration, excellent antibacterial moiety, and improved tensile properties for facemask application. Hence, in this work, we have studied the effect of GR concentrations (0-15 g) on the needleless electrospinning behavior and fibers' morphology through rheology, electrical conductivity, and SEM analysis. These analyses revealed that GR significantly affects the fibers' spinning behavior, morphology, and diameter of the produced fibers. Later, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy mapped the functional changes in the produced nanofibers that affirmed the integration of GR with CA polymer. This modification resulted in a 3-fold rise in tensile strength and an 11-fold decline in elongation% in 15 g CA/GR composite nanofibers membrane than the control sample. Herein, a dual-functioning deep eutectic solvent system based on triethylmethylammonium chloride and imidazole was harnessed as a swelling agent and a reaction medium for the esterification of cellulose with n -octyl succinic anhydride (OSA). The modified or amphiphilic cellulose nanofibers (ACNFs), synthesized using three different OSA-to-anhydroglucose unit molar ratios (0.5:1, ACNF-1; 1:1, ACNF-2; and 1.5:1, ACNF-3), were further converted into nanofibers with degree of substitution (DS) values of 0.24-0.66. The ACNFs possessed a lateral dimension of 4.24-9.22 nm and displayed surface activity due to the balance of hydrophobic and hydrophilic characteristics. The ACNFs made stable aqueous dispersions; however, the instability index of ACNF-3 (0.51) was higher than those of ACNF-1 (0.29) and ACNF-2 (0.33), which was attributed to the high DS-induced hydrophobicity, causing the instability in water. The amphiphilic nature of ACNFs promoted their performance as stabilizers in oil-in-water Pickering emulsions with average droplet sizes of 4.85 μm (ACNF-1) and 5.48 μm (ACNF-2). Self-standing films of ACNFs showed high contact angles for all the tested DS variants (97.48-114.12°), while their tensile strength was inversely related to DS values (ACNF-1: 115 MPa and ACNF-3: 49.5 MPa). Aqueous dispersions of ACNFs were also tested for coating fruits to increase their shelf life. Coatings improved their shelf life by decreasing oxygen contact and moisture loss.

According to clinical case reports, bacterial co-infection with COVID-19 can significantly increase mortality, with Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) being one of the most common pathogens causing complications such as pneumonia. Thus, during the pandemic, research on imparting air filters with antibacterial properties was actively initiated, and several antibacterial agents were investigated. However, air filters with inorganic nanostructures on organic nanofibers (NFs) have not been investigated extensively. This study aimed to demonstrate the efficiency of electropolarized poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) NFs decorated with Li-doped ZnO nanorods (NRs) to improve the filtering ability and antibacterial activity of the ultrathin air filter. The surfactant was loaded onto the ZnO─known for its biocompatibility and low toxicity─nanoparticles (NPs) and transferred to the outer surface of the NFs, where Li-doped ZnO NRs were grown. The Li-doped ZnO NR-decorated NF effectively enhanced the physical filtration efficiency and antibacterial properties. Additionally, by exploiting the ferroelectric properties of Li-doped ZnO NRs and PVDF-TrFE NFs, the filter was electropolarized to increase its Coulombic interaction with PMs and S. aureus . As a result, the filter exhibited a 90% PM 1.0 removal efficiency and a 99.5% sterilization rate against S. aureus . The method proposed in this study provides an effective route for simultaneously improving the air filter performance and antibacterial activity.

Diabetic wounds are problematic to heal owing to microbial infections as well as decreased proliferation and high concentrations of reactive oxygen species. In this study, a double-layered nanofibrous mat containing grape seed extract (GSE) and silver sulfadiazine (SSD) was fabricated. A synthetic biodegradable polymer, e.g., polycaprolactone (PCL), and a natural material (i.e., collagen) were employed as wound dressing substances. The results showed that GSE possesses antioxidant activity which can be helpful in reducing free radicals. The platform exhibited antibacterial activity against gram-positive and -negative bacteria. The double-layered nanofibrous mat containing GSE and SSD not only was not toxic but also amplified the cell proliferation compared to a pure mat, showing the effect of plant extract. After induction of a round wound, the animals were divided into three groups, namely (1) normal group (receiving + GSE/-GSE nanofiber), (2) diabetic group (receiving + GSE/-GSE nanofiber), and (3) control group (receiving gauze). In vivo evaluation demonstrated no significant differences in the healing process of normal rats. Surprisingly, fully repaired skin was observed on day 14 in the double-layered nanofibrous mat containing GSE in the normal and diabetic groups whereas the wound of diabetic rats treated with pure mat was not completely healed. The macroscopic and microscopic results after 14 days showed the following order in wound repair: Normal/ + GES > Diabetic/ + GSE > Normal/-GES > Diabetic/-GSE > control (with gauze) (p < 0.05). Accordingly, the double-layered nanofibrous mat containing GSE and SSD used in the present study could be considered as a suitable wound dressing in order to shorten healing time and prevent infection during the wound healing process., (© 2023. Ondansetron (ODS) is an effective antiemetic drug which suffers from limited solubility and bioavailability during oral administration due to first-pass metabolism. However, these limitations can be mitigated through inclusion complexation with cyclodextrins (CDs). In this study, we have reported the electrospinning of polymer-free, free-standing ODS/CD nanofibrous webs (NW), a promising approach for developing a fast-disintegrating delivery system of an antiemetic drug molecule. Highly water soluble hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrins (HPβCD) were used as both complexation agent and electrospinning matrix. The computational study revealed that the 1/2 (drug/CD) stoichiometry was more favorable compared to 1/1. The ODS/HPβCD NW was obtained with higher loading efficiency (∼96 %) compared to the control sample of ODS/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) NW (∼80 %). The amorphous distribution of ODS raised by complexation and the highly water-soluble nature of HPβCD resulted into faster and better release profile and quite faster disintegration property (∼2 s) in artificial saliva than polymeric ODS/PVA NW. Here, ODS/HPβCD NW was generated in the absence of a toxic solvent or chemical to enable the drug loading in an amorphous state. Background: This study aimed to develop an ultrathin nanofibrous membrane able to, firstly, mimic the natural fibrous architecture of human Bruch's membrane (BM) and, secondly, promote survival of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells after surface functionalization of fibrous membranes., Methods: Integrin-binding peptides (IBPs) that specifically interact with appropriate adhesion receptors on RPEs were immobilized on Bruch's-mimetic membranes to promote coverage of RPEs. Surface morphologies, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectra, contact angle analysis, Alamar Blue assay, live/dead assay, immunofluorescence staining, and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate the outcome., Results: Results showed that coated membranes maintained the original morphology of nanofibers. After coating with IBPs, the water contact angle of the membrane surfaces varied from 92.38 ± 0.67 degrees to 20.16 ± 0.81 degrees. RPE cells seeded on IBP-coated membranes showed the highest viability at all time points (Day 1, p < 0.05; Day 3, p < 0.01; Days 7 and 14, p < 0.001). The proliferation rate of RPE cells on uncoated poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) membranes was significantly lower than that of IBP-coated membranes ( p < 0.001). SEM images showed a well-organized hexa/polygonal monolayer of RPE cells on IBP-coated membranes. RPE cells proliferated rapidly, contacted, and became confluent. RPE cells formed a tight adhesion with nanofibers under high-magnification SEM. Our findings confirmed that the IBP-coated PCL membrane improved the attachment, proliferation, and viability of RPE cells. In addition, in this study, we used serum-free culture for RPE cells and short IBPs without immunogenicity to prevent graft rejection and immunogenicity during transplantation., Conclusions: These results indicated that the biomimic BM-IBP-RPE nanofibrous graft might be a new, practicable approach to increase the success rate of RPE cell transplantation.

The sublingual mucosa is an attractive route for drug delivery, although challenged by a continuous flow of saliva that leads to a loss of drug by swallowing. It is of great benefit that drugs absorbed across the sublingual mucosa avoid exposure to the harsh environment of the gastro-intestinal lumen; this is especially beneficial for drugs of low physicochemical stability such as therapeutic peptides. In this study, a two-layered hybrid drug delivery system was developed for the sublingual delivery of the therapeutic peptide desmopressin. It consisted of peptide-loaded mucoadhesive electrospun chitosan/polyethylene oxide-based nanofibers (mean diameter of 183 ± 20 nm) and a saliva-repelling backing film to promote unidirectional release towards the mucosa. Desmopressin was released from the nanofiber-based hybrid system (approximately 80% of the loaded peptide was released within 45 min) in a unidirectional manner in vitro. Importantly, the nanofiber-film hybrid system protected the peptide from wash-out, as demonstrated in an ex vivo flow retention model with porcine sublingual mucosal tissue. Approximately 90% of the loaded desmopressin was retained at the surface of the ex vivo porcine sublingual mucosa after 15 min of exposure to flow rates representing salivary flow.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of formulation and procedure parameters in obtaining thick and continuous chitosan/PVA/glycerol nanofibres to be applied in skin care. For that, the polymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and size-exclusion chromatography. After this, 96 chitosan/PVA/glycerol nanofibre scaffolds were prepared by electrospinning method, using factorial designs. The independent variables were crude and pure chitosan, 2 brands of PVA, 2 needle gauges, high and low polymer concentration, high and low glycerol concentration, and final solution with and without ultrafiltration. Morphological analysis was performed by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and confocal microscopy. The best sample (NF67) presented an average thickness of 268.3 nm, uniform distribution, and high yield. It was obtained at a 1:3.5 (crude chitosan: PVA with lower molecular weight, but more hydrolysed) ratio and lower glycerol concentration, suggesting that the degree of hydrolysis of the PVA is more important than its molecular weight for obtaining better quality nanofibres and that the glycerol also makes the electrospinning process difficult. In this study, four different nanofibers consisting of gelatin (Gel), doxorubicin (DOX) with gel (DOX@Gel), a composite of gel with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGylated-gel), and DOX@PEGylated-gel were fabricated. Subsequently, the nanofibers were thermally cross-linked in order to offer a stable and biocompatible alternative for the biological applications of nanofibers such as drug delivery and tissue engineering. Nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and confocal microscopy. The formation of smooth, continuous, and uniform nanofibers was observed and the addition of PEG resulted in an increase whereas the incorporation of DOX into nanofibers had no significant change in the diameter of nanofibers. Crosslinking also enlarged the diameter of all nanofibers and the most dramatic increase was observed 53% by DOX@PEGylated-gel. Afterward, the biological performance of the nanofibers was investigated by drug release profile, cytotoxicity on A549 cell line as well as antimicrobial activity with E. coli and S. aureus . The results indicate an enhanced drug release profile, moderate antimicrobial activity, and reasonable cytotoxic efficiency for thermally cross-linked nanofibers compared to uncross-linked nanofibers.

In the experiment, a chemical oxidation method was used to prepare nano-divalent silver oxide powder with a particle size of about 10 nm. Compared with silver nanoparticles and monovalent silver compounds, nano‑silver oxide has better antibacterial properties. The cellulose antibacterial aerogel was prepared by combining it with cellulose nanofibrils and using freeze-thaw cycles and freeze-drying methods. The microscopic morphology, mechanical properties, in vitro release of silver ions, antibacterial properties and biodegradability of composite aerogels were studied. The porosity of the cellulose antibacterial aerogel can reach 94%, the swelling rate was greater than 1000%, and the pore size was between 13 and 15 nm, which showed a larger storage space and attachment site for the aerogel. The diameter of the inhibition zone of the aerogel against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was 23 mm and 20 mm respectively, and the aerogels still exhibited significant antibacterial activities with more than 99.5% reductions in Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, which shows highly effective antibacterial properties. Epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) is a green biomedical agent for promoting wound healing, which possess excellent antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. For improving the low bioavailability challenges of EGCG in vivo, we had successful created a low-cost and simple wound dressing Poly (L-Lactic-co-caprolactone) (PLCL)/Gelatin/EGCG/Core-shell nanofiber membrane (PGEC) with drug sustained release capacity through coaxial electrospinning technology. In vitro experimental indicated that the core-shell structure wound dressing had excellent biocompatibility, antibacterial and antioxidant ability, which could support cell viability and proliferation, encourage re-epithelialization during the healing process, inhibit subsequent wound infection and thus promote wound regeneration. In vivo experimental demonstrated that PGEC wound dressing could promote wound healing, the histological results further demonstrated that PGEC not only facilitated early wound closure but also influenced cellular differentiation and tissue organization. Meanwhile, PGEC had excellent hemostatic ability. Taken all together, we believed that the PGEC wound dressing, which could localize delivery of EGCG, had high potential clinical application for promoting wound healing, hemostasis or other related clinical applications in the future., (Copyright © 2021. Biodegradable and eco-friendly food packaging materials have attracted attention. Novel blending films were prepared with polylactic acid (PLA) and Perilla essential oil (PEsO). The morphological features of the nanofibers were modulated by adjusting process parameters (e.g. PLA solution concentration, applied voltage and ultrasonic power). The optimal spinning concentrations, applied voltages and ultrasonic power of the PLA solutions were set at 15% (m/v), 20 kV and 640 W, respectively. Compared with the PLA films, the addition of PEsO increased the diameter of the nanofibers and solvent resistance and reduced the swelling rate of the PLA/PEsO films. The breakage elongation and the gas barrier properties significantly improved when 2% (w/w) PEsO was used. Fourier infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, thermogravimetry and differential scanning were used in analyzing the potential interactions of the film matrices. The PLA/PEsO films had good biocompatibility and antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The PLA/PEsO (1:0.02) film loaded with 2% PEsO extended the shelf life of chilled chicken to 12 days, as indicated by the measured total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), total viable count and pH value. In this study, designing of a stable electrospun blended chitosan (CS)-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers for colorimetric glucose biosensing in an aqueous medium was investigated. CS and PVA solutions were blended to acquire an optimum content (CS/PVA:1/4) and electrospunned to obtain uniform and bead-free CS/PVA nanofiber structures following the optimization of the electrospinning parameters (33 kV, 20 cm, and 1.2 ml.h -1 ). Crosslinking process applied subsequently provided mechanically and chemically stable nanofibers with an average diameter of 378 nm. The morphological homogeneity, high fluid absorption ability (>%50), thermal (<230 °C) and morphological stability, surface hydrophilicity and degrability properties of cross-linked CS/PVA nanofiber demonstrated their great potential to be developed as an eye-readable strip for biosensing applications. The glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was immobilized by physical adsorption on the cross-linked CS/PVA nanofiber. The glucose assay analysis by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry using the same enzymatic system of the proposed glucose strips in form of absorbance versus concentration plot was found to be linear over a glucose concentration range of 2.7 to 13.8 mM. The prepared naked eye colorimetric glucose detection strips, with lower detection limit of 2.7 mM, demonstrated dramatic color change from white (0 mM) to brownish-orange (13.8 mM). The developed cross-linked CS/PVA nanofiber strips, prepared by electrospinnig procedure, could be easily adapted to a color map, as an alternative material for glucose sensing. Bio-based additives received significant attention in pulp and paper properties improvement. For this, the most cited biochemical Cellulose Nano Fibrils (CNFs) and Cationic Starch (CS) were experimentally compared with the most declared synthetic chemical, Cationic Polyacrylamide (CPAM). SEM images showed better paper surface filling by the utilization of the chemicals. The three studied polymers, in solely or combination mechanism, improved mainly bagasse pulp and paper properties compared to the blank sample, except for pulp drainage, which decreased by CNFs to lower volumes presumably due to its intrinsic characteristics. Cationic polymers (CP) compared to CP/CNFs approaches increased pulp retention and drainage but decreased paper density and strengths. The best pulp retention and drainage achieved by CS followed by CPAM, while paper air persistency, density, and strength properties evaluated highest by CP/CNFs followed by CNFs. In this study, due to the favorable properties of MOF compounds and fibrous materials, new nanostructures of Zr-MOF/PVP nanofibrous composites were synthesized by electrospinning procedure. The related features of these samples were characterized by relevant analyzes, including SEM, BET surface area analysis, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy. The final product showed significant properties such as small particle size distribution, large surface area, and high crystallinity. This strategy for producing these nanostructures could lead to new compounds as novel alternative materials for biological applications. Lipase MG10 was successfully immobilized on the mentioned nanofibrous composites and biochemically characterized. The lipase activity of free and immobilized lipases was considered by measuring the absorbance of pNPP (500 μM in 40 mM Tris/HCl buffer, pH 7.8, and 0.01% Triton X100) at 37 °C for 30 min. Different concentrations of glutaraldehyde, different crosslinking times, different times of immobilization, different enzyme loading, and different pH values have been optimized. Results showed that the optimized immobilization condition was achieved in 2.5% glutaraldehyde, after 2 h of crosslinking time, after 6 h immobilization time, using 180 mg protein/g support at pH 9.0. The immobilized enzyme was also totally stable after 180 min incubation at 60 °C. The free enzyme showed the maximum activity at pH 9.0, but the optimal pH of the immobilized lipase was shifted about 1.5 pH units to the alkaline area. The immobilized lipase showed about 2.7 folds (78%) higher stability than the free enzyme at 50 °C. Some divalent metal ions, including Cu 2+ (22%), Co 2+ (37%), Mg 2+ (12%), Hg 2+ (11%), and Mn 2+ (17%) enhanced the enzyme activity of immobilized enzyme. The maximum biodiesel production (27%) from R. communis oil was obtained after 18 h of incubation by lipase MG10. The immobilized lipase displayed high potency in biodiesel production, about 83% after 12 h of incubation. Pumpkin starch (PS) was extracted from Cucurbita maxima and utilized to prepare films in combination with cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and cellulose nanofiber (CNF), using a solvent casting strategy. The PS was characterized to contain 26.6% of amylose, exhibiting a "B"-type crystalline structure and high stability against thermal degradation. PS/CNF films showed better thermal stability than PS/CNC films, whereas the CNC was more effective than CNF for enhancing the tensile strength (TS) of the films. The nanocomposite films containing 1% CNC showed the highest TS of 30.32 MPa. Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed stronger hydrogen bonding in the PS/CNC films, likely contributing to the observed high mechanical strength. CNC and CNF both decreased the transparency of PS films, by 5.2% and 13.1%, respectively. Overall, the properties of PS composite films can be effectively modified by incorporating CNC and CNF, as PS/CNC films with high mechanical strength and PS/CNF films with good thermal stability. Our results indicate that PS is a suitable material for CNC/CNF composite film fabrication. Plant-based hydrogels have attracted great attention in biomedical fields since they are biocompatible and based on natural, sustainable, cost-effective, and widely accessible sources. Here, we introduced new viscoelastic bio-inks composed of quince seed mucilage and cellulose nanofibrils (QSM/CNF) easily extruded into 3D lattice structures through direct ink writing in ambient conditions. The QSM/CNF inks enabled precise control on printing fidelity where CNF endowed objects with shape stability after freeze-drying and with suitable porosity, water uptake capacity, and mechanical strength. The compressive and elastic moduli of samples produced at the highest CNF content were both increased by ~100% (from 5.1 ± 0.2 kPa and 32 ± 1 kPa to 10.7 ± 0.5 and 64 ± 2 kPa, respectively). These values ideally matched those reported for soft tissues; accordingly, the cell compatibility of the printed samples was evaluated against HepG2 cells (human liver cancer). The results confirmed the 3D hydrogels as being non-cytotoxic and suitable to support attachment, survival, and proliferation of the cells. We recently reported that a highly homogeneous aqueous suspension of fibroin nanofiber (FNF) can be simply obtained by mechanical water-grinding a heterogeneous aqueous fibroin slurry and that the FNF in the suspension preserves the native β-sheet secondary structure during this mechanical treatment. The current study reports the surface properties of well-preserved crystalline structure novel FNF film from water-grinding preparation as compared with those of typical, conventionally prepared regenerated fibroin (RF) film. RF film was not treated with alcoholic solutions and was verified to be amorphous from a WAXD diffraction diagram. The air-side surfaces of the FNF semi-crystalline and RF amorphous films were studied to clarify differences using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), static water contact angle, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This work aims to improve the electrospinability and antibacterial activity of chitosan (CS) - based nanofibers. Three approaches consisting of reducing molecular weight of CS by NaOH hydrolysis (HCS), blending with two carrying polymers (polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)) and incorporating with in-situ synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were integrated simultaneously for the first time to fabricate the HCS-AgNPs/PVP/PVA multicomponent nanofibers. The electrospinning parameters were optimized to obtain the smooth and uniform nanofibers without beads of both HCS/PVP/PVA and HCS-AgNPs/PVP/PVA systems. The presence of in-situ AgNPs in the multicomponent blends gives the better electrospinning performance and the lowest fiber diameter of 139 nm. In addition, the thermal properties, thermal stability and crystallinity index of both nanofibers also increased with increasing HCS or HCS-AgNPs fractions. Finally, the best antibacterial activity of HCS/PVP/PVA and HCS-AgNPs/PVP/PVA nanofibers against E. coli was found to be 74.4% and 99.9%, respectively. The significant enhancement in bactericidal activity of HCS-AgNPs/PVP/PVA nanofibers against E. coli is due to the synergistic properties of HCS/PVP/PVA blends and AgNPs. Both nanofiber mats displayed the excellent structural stability in moisture environment for at least 7 days. Vitamin D 3 , vitamin K 2 , and Mg (10%, 1.25%, and 5%, w/w, respectively)-loaded PLA (12%, w/v) (TCP (5%, w/v))/PCL (12%, w/v) 1:1 (v/v) composite nanofibers (DKMF) were produced by electrospinning method (ES) and their osteoinductive effects were investigated in cell culture test. Neither pure nanofibers nor DKMF caused a significant cytotoxic effect in fibroblasts. The induction of the stem cell differentiation into osteogenic cells was observed in the cell culture with both DKMF and pure nanofibers, separately. Vitamin D 3, vitamin K 2 , and magnesium demonstrated to support the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells by expressing Runx2, BMP2, and osteopontin and suppressing PPAR-γ and Sox9. Therefore, the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway was activated by DKMF. DKMF promoted large axonal sprouting and needle-like elongation of osteoblast cells and enhanced cellular functions such as migration, infiltration, proliferation, and differentiation after seven days of incubation using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The results showed that DKMF demonstrated sustained drug release for 144 h, tougher and stronger structure, higher tensile strength, increased water up-take capacity, decreased degradation ratio, and slightly lower Tm and Tg values compared to pure nanofibers. A green approach for the preparation of starch-based composite nanofibers using electrospinning was developed. The water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl starch (CMS) with DS 0.31 was prepared. The addition of co-blending polymer polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) was attempted to improve the CMS solution spinnability, which blends from aqueous solution were prepared at different CMS/PVA weight ratios. The solution parameters including viscosity, surface tension and conductivity were measured and the morphologies of nanofibers were observed by SEM. Smooth, continuous, and defect-free nanofibers were successfully obtained range from the blend of CMS/PVA weight ratios of 10:90 to 80:20. Diameter distribution diagrams suggested that the diameter of the nanofibers reduced with the concentration of CMS increasing. This is the first report that the thin nanofiber (135.29 nm) with bead-free was obtained at the maximal CMS content of 50.0 wt% in the CMS/PVA blend. Protein-based nanomaterials are gaining growing interest in biomedical field. The present paper evaluates the physico-chemical properties of electrospun nanofibers resulting from the combination of gelatin with keratin (from wool) and sericin (from silk) to validate their use for in vitro interaction studies. We demonstrated that that presence of sericin influences the fiber morphology at macroscopic level - i.e., wide diameter distributions by SEM and image analysis - with effects on chemical - i.e., a decrease of hydrogen bonds of NH groups verified by infrared spectroscopy - and thermal behavior of electrospun nanofibers, in comparison with gelatin-based ones. Moreover, we verified that sericin, in combination with keratin macromolecules, can amplify the biochemical signal of gelatin, improving the in-vitro stability of gelatin-based nanofibers. In vitro results confirm a synergistic effect of sericin and keratin on human Mesenchymal Stem Cells (hMSC) proliferation - increase over 50% respect to other types - associated to the enhancement of in vitro stability directly ascribable to the peculiar physical interaction among the proteins. The growth and reproduction of microorganisms can cause food spoilage in the process of food transportation and storage. Active packaging is a good way to inhibit food spoilage and prolong the shelf lives of foods. In this study, O/W Pickering emulsion with ZnO nanoparticles as solid particles and oregano essential oil as the oil phase was prepared and used to functionalize cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) film, and excellent antimicrobial and antioxidant activity was obtained. When the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles was 1.5 wt% and the mass fraction of the oil phase was 20%, the Pickering emulsion with a particle size of 26.85 μm exhibited strong standing stability. The Pickering emulsion was blended with the film-forming matrix CNFs to prepare active packaging films by casting. The Pickering emulsion evenly dispersed in the film to form microcapsules which encapsulated oregano essential oil entirely. The antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes was 89.61%, the DPPH radical scavenging rate was 58.52%, while the barrier properties of the developed films against oxygen, water vapor and visible light were improved. The reported research involves formation of quaternized nanocellulose triiodide for use as an agent for controlled release of iodine. Nanocellulose was extracted from bagasse and the extracted cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were quaternized with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (CHPTAC) in NaOH/urea solution. This was followed by exchange of Cl - with I 3 - by reaction with KI/I 2 . Nanofibers having I 3 - anions were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XRF and FTIR spectroscopy. The iodine content was estimated to be 33.42% and the fibers showed no leaching of molecular I 2 in detectable amounts. The fibers showed a maximum activity of 94.73% and 99.86% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. These are capable of sustaining 100% antimicrobial activity over a period of six months. Using biocompatible polymer nanofibrous conduits with a controlled drug delivery have attracted much attention for peripheral nerve regeneration. This work was aimed at preparing electrospun poly (l-lactide-co-D, l-lactide) (PLDLLA) containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and 4-aminopyridine (4-AP)-loaded molecularly imprinted nanoparticles (MIP 4-AP ) as well as evaluating their performance in in vitro and in vivo assessments. After synthesis of MIP 4-AP based on poly (methacrylic acid) with imprinting factor of 1.78, it was incorporated into the PLDLLA/MWCNTs nanofibers to optimize. By adjusting the process variables, the average diameter and electrical conductivity of the nanofibrous sample were 92 nm and 2870 × 10 -7  S cm -1 , respectively. Afterward, 4-AP release of the optimum sample showed the presence of MIP 4-AP leading to initial burst release decrease and plateau level postpone up to 96 h. Moreover, the culture results of PC12 as neuroblastoma cell line on optimal PLDLLA/MWCNTs/MIP 4-AP nanofibrous sample revealed the highest cell proliferation without cytotoxicity compared to neat nanofibers. Eventually, the animal model experiment exhibited that the conductive conduit based on the optimum sample was able to repair the rat's sciatic nerve after four weeks in accordance with sciatic function index and histological studies., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Carboxymethylated cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) with different carboxyl contents (0, 0.36, 0.72 and 1.24 mmol/g) were prepared and characterized via morphology, diameter distribution, zeta potential, structural features, rheological properties, suspension stability, and thermal properties. The results of toxicological studies of ingested CNF via in vitro and in vivo models were present. In vitro studies used an epithelial-like cell line (Caco-2) to assess the effects of a 24 h incubation with CNF, in which no significant cytotoxicity was observed. In vivo studies were evaluated in mice gavage once per day for 8 weeks with 1% or 3.5% w/w suspension of CNF in water. Blood and serum were collected for analysis. No significant differences in hematology, and serum markers were observed between controls and mice given CNF suspensions. Weight, food intake and feces were recorded for growing development and nutrient retention in feces was measured for investigation of functional properties of CNFs. Mice given CNF suspensions gained a significant increment in fecal fat but a reduction in food intake and weight compared to controls. Bacterial infections prolong the wound healing time and increase the suffering of patients, thus it is important to develop wound dressing that can inhibit bacterial infection. Herein, we use two methods including "doping method" and "secondary growth method" to prepare ZIF-8@gentamicin embedded in and coated on polyacrylonitrile/gelatin (PG) nanofibers, separately. Composite nanofibers prepared by the secondary growth method achieve higher drug loading than that of the doping method, and the release rate can be adjusted by pH. Simultaneously increasing drug loading and regulating its release rate are achieved in the secondary growth method, which cannot be achieved by the doping method. Furthermore, synergistic antibacterial property occurs in the composite nanofibers prepared by the secondary growth method, and gentamicin loaded on ZIF-8 promotes the antibacterial effect, which shows better antibacterial effect than the doping method. As a result, during the wound infection of mouse, composite nanofibers prepared by the secondary growth method exhibit a faster recovery effect than the doping method, which effectively shortened the wound healing time from 21 days to 16 days., (Copyright © 2021. Hydrogels derived from natural polymers have received great attention, but their practical applications are severely hindered by the relatively poor mechanical properties. In this work, cellulose nanofibril (CNF) was used as a crosslinker to reinforce the sodium alginate (SA)/chitosan (CS) hydrogels for drug sustained release. The CNF was prepared via a combined process of ball milling and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) pretreatment and characterized using SEM, FT-IR, and XRD. Furthermore, the microstructure, mechanical/biological properties and swelling performance of SA/CS/CNF hydrogels were investigated. Results showed that 1.0 wt% CNF addition led to the increases of 23.6% in storage modulus and 54.4% in loss modulus for the SA/CS/CNF hydrogels, indicating that CNF addition was effective in reinforcing the three-dimensional entangled networks of the hydrogels. Moreover, the presence of CNF was found to weaken the swelling performance of SA/CS/CNF hydrogels. When the synthesized SA/CS/CNF hydrogel with 1.0 wt% CNF was applied as a carrier for drug release, 50.8% reduction in the release rate in simulated gastric juice was achieved, demonstrating its outstanding sustained release properties. Chitin, an abundant biopolymer on Earth, represents a resource for sustainable functional materials. However, traditional β-chitin production methods involve alkaline treatment at approximately 90 °C for its separation from the protein, thus not suitable as a functional peptide, as it is mixed with an alkaline aqueous solution. This study examined the conversion of squid pen into solid β-chitin and water-soluble peptides using only water at temperatures of 150-250 °C for 30-120 min. Solid β-chitin was converted to its nanofiber form and the physicochemical properties of the β-chitin nanofibers were almost the same as those produced by the traditional method. Because this method uses only water, the protein in the squid pen may also be a functional peptide for lowering blood pressure, by inhibiting the Angiotensin-1 converting enzyme. The application of electroactive scaffolds can be promising for bone tissue engineering applications. In the current paper, we aimed to fabricate an electro-conductive scaffold based on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) containing ferrous sulfate. FeSO 4 ·7H 2 O salt with different concentrations 5, 10, and 15 wt%, were blended with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer as the precursor and converted to Fe 2 O3/CNFs nanocomposite by electrospinning and heat treatment. The characterization was conducted using SEM, EDX, XRD, FTIR, and Raman methods. The results showed that the incorporation of Fe salt induces no adverse effect on the nanofibers' morphology. EDX analysis confirmed that the Fe ions are uniformly dispersed throughout the CNF mat. FTIR spectroscopy showed the interaction of Fe salt with PAN polymer. Raman spectroscopy showed that the incorporation of FeSO4·7H 2 O reduced the ID/IG ratio, indicating more ordered carbon in the synthesized nanocomposite. Electrical resistance measurement depicted that, although the incorporation of ferrous sulfate reduced the electrical conductivity, the conductive is suitable for electrical stimulation. The in vitro studies revealed that the prepared nanocomposites were cytocompatible and only negligible toxicity (less than 10%) induced by CNFs/Fe 2 O 3 fabricated from PAN FeSO 4 ·7H 2 O 15%. Although various nanofibrous composite fabricated with Fe NPs have been evaluated for tissue engineering applications, CNFs exhibited promising properties, such as excellent mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and electrical conductivity. Electrospinning of natural and synthetic polymers has shown to be a great candidate for the fabrication of tissue engineering scaffolds due to their similarity to the nanofibrous structure of natural extracellular matrix (ECM). Moreover, the addition of ECM-like proteins could enhance the biocompatibility of these scaffolds. In this study, soluble eggshell protein (SEP) was first extracted and synthesized from the raw eggshell membrane. The characteristics and biocompatibility of the extracted SEP were evaluated using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) analysis and 3-(4,5- dimethylthiazol-2-yl-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay. For scaffolds fabrication, a three-layer nanofibrous composite structure was produced using the electrospinning technique. The outer layers composed of polyvinyl alcohol, chitosan, and extracted SEP while the middle layer composed of polyethylene oxide, gelatin, and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). For each layer, the electrospinning parameters were adjusted to form bead-free fibers. To improve fibers' stability against body fluids, the produced fibers were crosslinked using glutaraldehyde vapor. Several techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray, ATR-FTIR, swelling, tensile test, in vitro biodegradation, and MTT assay were implemented to evaluate the physical, chemical, and biological characterization of the fabricated fibers. The results showed that crosslinked fibers have adequate stability in water, suitable mechanical properties, and promising water uptake capacity. The MTT results also revealed that SEP and ZnO-NPs could increase scaffolds biocompatibility. Moreover, SEM photographs of cultured fibroblasts cells on the scaffolds showed that cells were well attached on the scaffolds and preserve their natural spindle shapes. The design of powerful in vitro cell culture platforms to support precision medicine can contribute to predict therapeutic success of cancer patients. Electrospun nanofibers applied to cell culture can mimic extracellular matrix and improve in vitro cell behavior. Here, we describe biocompatible blended polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA)/gum arabic (GA) extracellular matrix (ECM)-like nanofibers for in vitro cell cultures capable of delivering nanocomposite for desired biomedical application. Therefore, PVA/GA ECM-like electrospun nanofibers were developed and characterized. Heat treatment was used to crosslink the nanofibers and biocompatibility was evaluated, which demonstrated the ability of developed platform to provide a cell culture-friendly environment. Previous work demonstrated that GA-gold nanoparticles (GA-AuNPs) in non-cytotoxic concentrations can reduce key metastatic cellular events such as invasion and colony formation of metastatic melanoma cells. Thus, crosslinked nanofibers were functionalized with GA-AuNPs and its cellular delivery was evaluated. GA-AuNPs were efficiently adsorbed onto the PVA/GA nanofibers surface and the system effectively delivered the nanocomposites to metastatic melanoma cells. Posterior lamellar transplantation of the eye' s cornea (DSAEK, DMEK) currently is the gold standard for treating patients with corneal endothelial cell and back surface pathologies resulting in functional impairment. An artificial biomimetic graft carrying human corneal endothelium could minimize the dependency on human donor corneas giving access to this vision-restoring surgery to large numbers of patients, thus reducing current long waiting lists. In this study, four groups of electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds were compared: polycaprolactone (PCL), PCL/collagen, PCL/gelatin and PCL/chitosan. Each of the scaffolds were tissue-engineered with human corneal endothelial cells (HCEC-B4G12) and analyzed with regard to their potential application as artificial posterior lamellar grafts. Staining with ZO-1 and Na + /K + -ATPase antibodies revealed intact cell functionalities. It could be shown, that blending leads to decreasing contact angle, whereby a heterogeneous blend morphology could be revealed. Scaffold cytocompatibility could be confirmed for all groups via live/dead staining, whereby a significant higher cell viability could be observed for the collagen and gelatine blended matrices with 97 ± 3% and 98 ± 2% living cells respectively. A novel composite edible coating film was developed from 0.8% chitosan (CS) and 0.5% sandalwood oil (SEO). Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were used as a stabilizer agent of oil-in-water Pickering emulsion. We found four typical groups of CNF level-dependent emulsion stabilization, including (1) unstable emulsion in the absence of CNFs; (2) unstable emulsion (0.006-0.21% CNFs); (3) stable emulsion (0.24-0.31% CNFs); and (4) regular emulsion with the addition of surfactant. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was performed to reveal the characteristics of droplet diameter and morphology. Antifungal tests against Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium digitatum, between emulsion coating stabilized with CNFs (CS-SEOpick) and CS or CS-SEO was tested. The effective concentration of CNFs (0.24%) may improve the performance of CS coating and maintain CS-SEO antifungal activity synergistically confirmed with a series of assays (in vitro, in vivo, and membrane integrity changes). The incorporation of CNFs contributed to improve the functional properties of CS and SEO-loaded CS including light transmission at UV and visible light wavelengths and tensile strength. In this study, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were modified by catalyzed lactic acid esterification in an aqueous medium with SnCl 2 as a catalyst. Films were made from unmodified and lactic acid-modified CNF without a polymer matrix to evaluate the effectiveness of the modification. Ungrafted and lactic acid-grafted CNF was also compounded with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) to produce composites. Mechanical, water absorption, and barrier properties were evaluated for ungrafted CNF, lactic acid-grafted CNF films, and PLA/CNF composites to ascertain the effect of lactic acid modification on the properties of the films and nanocomposites. FTIR spectra of the modified CNF revealed the presence of carbonyl peaks at 1720 cm -1 , suggesting that the esterification reaction was successful. Modification of CNF with LA improved the tensile modulus of the produced films but the tensile strength and elongation decreased. Additionally, films made from modified CNF had lower water absorption, as well as water vapor and oxygen permeability, relative to their counterparts with unmodified CNFs. The mechanical properties of PLA/CNF composites made from lactic acid-grafted CNFs did not significantly change with respect to the ungrafted CNF. However, the addition of lactic acid-grafted CNF to PLA improved the water vapor permeability relative to composites containing ungrafted CNF. Therefore, the esterification of CNFs in an aqueous medium may provide an environmentally benign way of modifying the surface chemistry of CNFs to improve the barrier properties of CNF films and PLA/CNF composites.

The sustained release of a water-soluble drug is always a key and important issue in pharmaceutics. In this study, using cellulose acetate (CA) as a biomacromolecular matrix, core-sheath nanofibers were developed for providing a sustained release of a model drug-metformin hydrochloride (MET). The core-sheath nanofibers were fabricated using modified tri-axial electrospinning, in which a detachable homemade spinneret was explored. A process-nanostructure-performance relationship was demonstrated through a series of characterizations. The prepared nanofibers F2 could release 95% of the loaded MET through a time period of 23.4 h and had no initial burst effect. The successful sustained release performances of MET can be attributed to the following factors: (1) the reasonable application of insoluble CA as the filament-forming carrier, which determined that the drug was released through a diffusion manner; (2) the core-sheath nanostructure provided the possibility of both encapsulating the drug completely and realizing the heterogeneous distributions of MET in the nanofibers with a higher drug load core than the sheath; (3) the thickness of the sheath sections were able to be exploited for further manipulating a better drug extended release performance. The mechanisms for manipulating the drug sustained release behaviors are proposed. The present proof-of-concept protocols can pave a new way to develop many novel biomolecule-based nanostructures for extending the release of water-soluble drugs.

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) encapsulated in fabricated hybrid silk-fibroin (SF)/polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers as an artificial neural guidance conduit (NGC) applicable for peripheral nerve regeneration. The NGC was prepared by PCL and SF filled with CNPs. The mechanical properties, contact angle, and cell biocompatibility experiments showed that the optimized concentration of CNPs inside SF and SF/PCL wall of conduits was 1% (wt/wt). The SEM image analysis showed the nanoscale texture of the scaffold in different topologies depend on composition with fiber diameters at about 351 ± 54 nm and 420 ± 73 nm respectively for CNPs + SF and CNPs + SF/PCL fibrous mats. Furthermore, contact angle measurement confirmed the hydrophilic behavior of the membranes, ascribable to the SF content and surface modification through modified methanol treatment. The balance of morphological and biochemical properties of hybrid CNPs 1% (wt/wt) + SF/PCL construct improves cell adhesion and proliferation in comparison with lower concentrations of CNPs in nanofibrous scaffolds. The release of CNPs 1% (wt/wt) from both CNPs + SF and CNPs+ SF/PCL fibrous mats was highly controlled and very slow during the extended time of incubation until 60 days. One of the main challenges in treating osteochondral lesions via tissue engineering approach is providing scaffolds with unique characteristics to mimic the complexity. It has led to application of heterogeneous scaffolds as a potential candidate for engineering of osteochondral tissues, in which graded multilayered-structure should promote bone and cartilage growth. By designing three-dimensional (3D)-nanofibrous scaffolds mimicking the native extracellular matrix's nanoscale structure, cells can grow in controlled conditions and regenerate the damaged tissue. In this study, novel 3D-functionality graded nanofibrous scaffolds composed of five layers based on different compositions containing polycaprolactone(PCL)/gelatin(Gel)/nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) for osteoregeneration and chitosan(Cs)/polyvinylalcohol(PVA) for chondral regeneration are introduced. This scaffold is fabricated by electrospinning technique using spring as collector to create 3D-nanofibrous scaffolds. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical compression test, porosimetry, and water uptake studies were applied to study each layer's physicochemical properties and whole functionally graded scaffold. Besides, biodegradation and biological studies were done to investigate biological performance of scaffold. Results showed that each layer has a fibrous structure with continuous nanofibers with improved pore size and porosity of novel 3D scaffold (6-13 μm and 90%) compared with two-dimensional (2D) mat (2.2 μm and 19.3%) with higher water uptake capacity (about 100 times of 2D mat). Compression modulus of electrospun scaffold was increased to 78 MPa by adding nHA. The biological studies revealed that the layer designed for osteoregeneration could improve cell proliferation rate in comparison to the layer designed for chondral regeneration. Fabrication method is one of the essential factors which directly affect on the properties of scaffold. Several techniques have been well established to fabricate nanofibrous scaffolds such as electrospinning. However, preparing a three-dimensional (3-D) interconnected macro-pore scaffold essential for transporting the cell metabolites and nutrients is difficult using the electrospinning method. The main aim of this study was developing a highly porous scaffold by poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA)/chitosan blend using liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) technique, a fast and cost-benefit method, in order to use in nerve tissue engineering. In addition, the effect of different polymeric concentrations on morphology, mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, in vitro degradation rate and pH alteration of the scaffolds were evaluated. Moreover, cell attachment, cell viability and cell proliferation of scaffolds as candidates for nerve tissue engineering was investigated. PLLA/chitosan blend not only had desirable structural properties, porosity, hydrophilicity, mechanical properties, degradation rate and pH alteration but also provided a favorable environment for attachment, viability, and proliferation of human neuroblastoma cells, exhibiting significant potential for nerve tissue engineering applications. However, the polymeric concentration in blend fabrication had influence on both characteristics and cell responses. The creation of skeletal muscle tissue in vitro is a major topic of interest today in the field of biomedical research, due to the lack of treatments for muscle loss due to traumatic accidents or disease. For this reason, the intrinsic properties of nanofibrillar structures to promote cell adhesion, proliferation, and cell alignment presents an attractive tool for regenerative medicine to recreate organized tissues such as muscle. Electrospinning is one of the processing techniques often used for the fabrication of these nanofibrous structures and the combination of synthetic and natural polymers is often required to achieve optimal mechanical and physiochemical properties. Here, polycaprolactone (PCL) is selected as a synthetic polymer used for the fabrication of scaffolds, and the effect of protein addition on the final scaffolds' properties is studied. Collagen and gelatin were the proteins selected and two different concentrations were analyzed (2 and 4 wt/vol%). Different PCL/protein systems were prepared, and a structural, mechanical and functional characterization was performed. The influence of fiber alignment on the properties of the final scaffolds was assessed through morphological, mechanical and biological evaluations. A bioreactor was used to promote cell proliferation and differentiation within the scaffolds. The results revealed that protein addition produced a decrease in the fiber size of the membranes, an increase in their hydrophilicity, and a softening of their mechanical properties. Self-assembling peptides have shown tremendous potential in the fields of material sciences, nanoscience, and medicine. Because of the vast combinatorial space of even short peptides, identification of self-assembling sequences remains a challenge. Herein, we develop an experimental method to rapidly screen a huge array of peptide sequences for self-assembling property, using the one-bead one-compound (OBOC) combinatorial library method. In this approach, peptides on beads are N-terminally capped with nitro-1,2,3-benzoxadiazole, a hydrophobicity-sensitive fluorescence molecule. Beads displaying self-assembling peptides would fluoresce under aqueous environment. Using this approach, we identify eight pentapeptides, all of which are able to self-assemble into nanoparticles or nanofibers. Some of them are able to interact with and are taken up efficiently by HeLa cells. Intracellular distribution varied among these non-toxic peptidic nanoparticles. This simple screening strategy has enabled rapid identification of self-assembling peptides suitable for the development of nanostructures for various biomedical and material applications., (© 2021. In bone surgery and orthopedics, bioresorbable materials can be helpful in bone repair and countering post-op infections. Explicit antibacterial activity, osteoinductive and osteoconductive effects are essential to achieving this objective. Nonwoven electrospun (ES) fibers are receiving the close attention of physicians as promising materials for wound dressing and tissue engineering; potentially, in high contrast with dense materials, ES mats hamper regeneration of the bone extracellular matrix to a lesser extent. The use of the compositions of inherently biodegradable polyesters (poly(ε-caprolactone) PCL, poly(lactoglycolide), etc.), calcium phosphates and antibiotics is highly prospective, but the task of forming ES fibers from such compositions is complicated by the incompatibility of the main organic and inorganic ingredients, polyesters and calcium phosphates. In the present research we report the synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles with uniform morphology, and demonstrate high efficiency of the block copolymer of PCL and poly(ethylene phosphoric acid) (PEPA) as an efficient compatibilizer for PCL/HAp mixtures that are able to form ES fibers with improved mechanical characteristics. The materials obtained in the presence of vancomycin exhibited incremental drug release against Staphylococcus aureus ( St. aureus ).

Here, we designed paper sheets coated with chitosan, bacterial cellulose (nanofibers), and ZnO with boosted antibacterial and mechanical activity. We investigated the compositions, with ZnO exhibiting two different sizes/shapes: (1) rods and (2) irregular sphere-like particles. The proposed processing of bacterial cellulose resulted in the formation of nanofibers. Antimicrobial behavior was tested using E. coli ATCC ® 25922™ following the ASTM E2149-13a standard. The mechanical properties of the paper sheets were measured by comparing tearing resistance, tensile strength, and bursting strength according to the ISO 5270 standard. The results showed an increased antibacterial response (assigned to the combination of chitosan and ZnO, independent of its shape and size) and boosted mechanical properties. Therefore, the proposed composition is an interesting multifunctional mixture for coatings in food packaging applications.

One of the most important environmental issues in the world today is the problem of air pollution, which includes particulate matter (PM) and greenhouse gases (mainly CO 2 ). The production of efficient sustainable filters to overcome this concern as well as to provide an alternative to synthetic petroleum-based filters remains a demanding challenge. The purpose of this research was to first produce novel cellulose nanofibers (CNF) based nanofilter from a combination of CNF and chitosan (CS) and then evaluate its applicability for air purification. A number of structural and chemical properties as well as CO 2 and PM adsorption efficiency of the modified CNF, were determined using advanced characterization techniques. After pretests, we determined the optimum loading for the CS was 1 wt%, and upon producing the samples, the CNF loadings (1, 1.5, and 2 wt%) were chosen as one variable. For particle absorption, the PM sizes (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 2.5 μm) were kept as other variables. Based on SEM results, we concluded the higher the concentration of CNF the higher the specific surface area and the lower the porosity and the diameter of the pores, which was confirmed by the BET test. Furthermore, the results showed that increasing the concentration of modified CNFs increases the adsorption rate of CO 2 and PM and that the highest adsorption of CO 2 and PM belonged to the 2% modified CNF., (Copyright © 2021. Vitamin D deficiency is now a global health problem; despite several drug delivery systems for carrying vitamin D due to low bioavailability and loss bioactivity. Developing a new drug delivery system to deliver vitamin D 3 is a strong incentive in the current study. Hence, an implantable drug delivery system (IDDS) was developed from the electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) and ε-polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous membrane, in which the core of implants consists of vitamin D 3 -loaded CA nanofiber (CAVD) and enclosed in a thin layer of the PCL membrane (CAVD/PCL). CA nanofibrous mat loaded with vitamin D 3 at the concentrations of 6, 12, and 20% (w/w) of vitamin D 3 were produced using electrospinning. The smooth and bead-free fibers with diameters ranged from 324 to 428 nm were obtained. The fiber diameters increased with an increase in vitamin D 3 content. The controlled drug release profile was observed over 30-days, which fit with the zero-order model (R 2  > 0.96) in the first stage. The mechanical properties of IDDS were improved. Young's modulus and tensile strength of CAVD/PCL (dry) were161 ± 14 and 13.07 ± 2.5 MPa, respectively. CA and PCL nanofibers are non-cytotoxic based on the results of the in-vitro cytotoxicity studies. In this study, the fibers of invasive species Agave americana L. and Ricinus communis L. were successfully used for the first time as new sources to produce cytocompatible and highly crystalline cellulose nanofibers. Cellulose nanofibers were obtained by two methods, based on either alkaline or acid hydrolysis. The morphology, chemical composition, and crystallinity of the obtained materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The crystallinity indexes (CIs) of the cellulose nanofibers extracted from A. americana and R. communis were very high (94.1% and 92.7%, respectively). Biological studies evaluating the cytotoxic effects of the prepared cellulose nanofibers on human embryonic kidney 293T (HEK293T) cells were also performed. The nanofibers obtained using the two different extraction methods were all shown to be cytocompatible in the concentration range assayed (i.e., 0‍‒‍500 µg/mL). Our results showed that the nanocellulose extracted from A. americana and R. communis fibers has high potential as a new renewable green source of highly crystalline cellulose-based cytocompatible nanomaterials for biomedical applications.

Objective: Wound healing is a complex process that involves the interaction between different cell types and bioactive factors. Impaired wound healing is characterized by a loss in synchronization of these interactions, resulting in nonhealing chronic wounds. Chronic wounds are a socioeconomic burden, one of the most prominent clinical manifestations of diabetes, however, they lack satisfactory treatment options. The objective of this study was to develop polymeric composites that deliver ions having wound healing properties and evaluate its performance using a pressure ulcer model in diabetic mice. Approach: To develop a polymeric composite wound dressing containing ion-releasing nanoparticles for chronic wound healing. This composite was chemically and physically characterized and evaluated using a pressure ulcer wound model in diabetic (db/db) mice to explore their potential as novel wound dressing. Results: This dressing exhibits a controlled ion release and a good in vitro bioactivity. The polymeric composite dressing treatment stimulates angiogenesis, collagen synthesis, granulation tissue formation, and accelerates wound closure of ischemic wounds created in diabetic mice. In addition, the performance of the newly designed composite is remarkably better than a commercially available dressing frequently used for the treatment of low-exuding chronic wounds. Innovation: The developed nanoplatforms are cell- and growth factor free and control the host microenvironment resulting in enhanced wound healing. These nanoplatforms are available by cost-effective synthesis with a defined composition, offering an additional advantage in potential clinical application. Conclusion: Based on the obtained results, these polymeric composites offer an optimum approach for chronic wound healing without adding cells or external biological factors.

Myocardial infarction of cardiomyocytes is a leading cause of heart failure (HF) worldwide. Since heart has very limited regeneration capacity, cardiac tissue engineering (TE) to produce a bioactive scaffold is considered. In this study, a series of polyurethane solutions (5-7%wt) in aqueous acetic acid were prepared using electrospinning. A variety of Polyurethane (PU)/Chitosan (Cs)/carbon nanotubes (CNT) composite nanofibrous scaffolds with random and aligned orientation were fabricated to structurally mimic the extracellular matrix (ECM). Electrospun nanofibers were then characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), water contact angle, degradation studies, tensile tests, electrical resistance measurement and cell viability assay. The biocompatibility of electrospun random and aligned nanofibrous scaffolds with H9C2 Cells was confirmed.
