Advances in large language models have raised concerns about their potential use in generating compelling election disinformation at scale. This study presents a two-part investigation into the capabilities of LLMs to automate stages of an election disinformation operation. First, we introduce DisElect, a novel evaluation dataset designed to measure LLM compliance with instructions to generate content for an election disinformation operation in localised UK context, containing 2,200 malicious prompts and 50 benign prompts. Using DisElect, we test 13 LLMs and find that most models broadly comply with these requests; we also find that the few models which refuse malicious prompts also refuse benign election-related prompts, and are more likely to refuse to generate content from a right-wing perspective. Secondly, we conduct a series of experiments (N=2,340) to assess the "humanness" of LLMs: the extent to which disinformation operation content generated by an LLM is able to pass as human-written. Our experiments suggest that almost all LLMs tested released since 2022 produce election disinformation operation content indiscernible by human evaluators over 50% of the time. Notably, we observe that multiple models achieve above-human levels of humanness. Taken together, these findings suggest that current LLMs can be used to generate high-quality content for election disinformation operations, even in hyperlocalised scenarios, at far lower costs than traditional methods, and offer researchers and policymakers an empirical benchmark for the measurement and evaluation of these capabilities in current and future models.

Recent surge in Large Language Model (LLM) availability has opened exciting avenues for research. However, efficiently interacting with these models presents a significant hurdle since LLMs often reside on proprietary or self-hosted API endpoints, each requiring custom code for interaction. Conducting comparative studies between different models can therefore be time-consuming and necessitate significant engineering effort, hindering research efficiency and reproducibility. To address these challenges, we present prompto, an open source Python library which facilitates asynchronous querying of LLM endpoints enabling researchers to interact with multiple LLMs concurrently, while maximising efficiency and utilising individual rate limits. Our library empowers researchers and developers to interact with LLMs more effectively and enabling faster experimentation and evaluation. prompto is released with an introductory video (https://youtu.be/-eZAmlV4ypk) under MIT License and is available via GitHub (https://github.com/alan-turing-institute/prompto).

The proliferation of human-AI ecosystems involving human interaction with algorithms, such as assistants and recommenders, raises concerns about large-scale social behaviour. Despite evidence of such phenomena across several contexts, the collective impact of GPS navigation services remains unclear: while beneficial to the user, they can also cause chaos if too many vehicles are driven through the same few roads. Our study employs a simulation framework to assess navigation services' influence on road network usage and CO2 emissions. The results demonstrate a universal pattern of amplified conformity: increasing adoption rates of navigation services cause a reduction of route diversity of mobile travellers and increased concentration of traffic and emissions on fewer roads, thus exacerbating an unequal distribution of negative externalities on selected neighbourhoods. Although navigation services recommendations can help reduce CO2 emissions when their adoption rate is low, these benefits diminish or even disappear when the adoption rate is high and exceeds a certain city- and service-dependent threshold. We summarize these discoveries in a non-linear function that connects the marginal increase of conformity with the marginal reduction in CO2 emissions. Our simulation approach addresses the challenges posed by the complexity of transportation systems and the lack of data and algorithmic transparency.

The Low-Level RF (LLRF) control circuits of linear accelerators (LINACs) are conventionally realized with heterodyne based architectures, which have analog RF mixers for up and down conversion with discrete data converters. We have developed a new LLRF platform for C-band linear accelerator based on the Frequency System-on-Chip (RFSoC) device from AMD Xilinx. The integrated data converters in the RFSoC can directly sample the RF signals in C-band and perform the up and down mixing digitally. The programmable logic and processors required for signal processing for the LLRF control system are also included in a single RFSoC chip. With all the essential components integrated in a device, the RFSoC-based LLRF control platform can be implemented more cost-effectively and compactly, which can be applied to a broad range of accelerator applications. In this paper, the structure and configuration of the newly developed LLRF platform will be described. The LLRF prototype has been tested with high power test setup with a Cool Cooper Collider (C\(^3\)) accelerating structure. The LLRF and the solid state amplifier (SSA) loopback setup demonstrated phase jitter in 1 s as low as 115 fs, which is lower than the requirement of C\(^3\). The rf signals from the klystron forward and accelerating structure captured with peak power up to 16.45 MW will be presented and discussed.

Recommendation systems and assistants (in short, recommenders) are ubiquitous in online platforms and influence most actions of our day-to-day lives, suggesting items or providing solutions based on users' preferences or requests. This survey analyses the impact of recommenders in four human-AI ecosystems: social media, online retail, urban mapping and generative AI ecosystems. Its scope is to systematise a fast-growing field in which terminologies employed to classify methodologies and outcomes are fragmented and unsystematic. We follow the customary steps of qualitative systematic review, gathering 144 articles from different disciplines to develop a parsimonious taxonomy of: methodologies employed (empirical, simulation, observational, controlled), outcomes observed (concentration, model collapse, diversity, echo chamber, filter bubble, inequality, polarisation, radicalisation, volume), and their level of analysis (individual, item, model, and systemic). We systematically discuss all findings of our survey substantively and methodologically, highlighting also potential avenues for future research. This survey is addressed to scholars and practitioners interested in different human-AI ecosystems, policymakers and institutional stakeholders who want to understand better the measurable outcomes of recommenders, and tech companies who wish to obtain a systematic view of the impact of their recommenders.

To achieve state-of-the-art jet energy resolution for Particle Flow, sophisticated energy clustering algorithms must be developed that can fully exploit available information to separate energy deposits from charged and neutral particles. Three published neural network-based shower separation models were applied to simulation and experimental data to measure the performance of the highly granular CALICE Analogue Hadronic Calorimeter (AHCAL) technological prototype in distinguishing the energy deposited by a single charged and single neutral hadron for Particle Flow. The performance of models trained using only standard spatial and energy and charged track position information from an event was compared to models trained using timing information available from AHCAL, which is expected to improve sensitivity to shower development and, therefore, aid in clustering. Both simulation and experimental data were used to train and test the models and their performances were compared. The best-performing neural network achieved significantly superior event reconstruction when timing information was utilised in training for the case where the charged hadron had more energy than the neutral one, motivating temporally sensitive calorimeters. All models under test were observed to tend to allocate energy deposited by the more energetic of the two showers to the less energetic one. Similar shower reconstruction performance was observed for a model trained on simulation and applied to data and a model trained and applied to data.

Photonic addressing of superconducting circuits has been proposed to overcome wiring complexity and heat load challenges, but superconducting-photonic links suffer from an efficiency-noise trade-off that limits scalability. This trade-off arises because increasing power conversion efficiency requires reducing optical power, which makes the converted signal susceptible to shot noise. We analyze this trade-off and find the infidelity of qubit gates driven by photonic signals scales inversely with the number of photons used, and therefore the power efficiency of the converter. While methods like nonlinear detection or squeezed light could mitigate this effect, we consider generating higher frequency electrical signals, such as millimeter-waves (100 GHz), using laser light. At these higher frequencies, circuits have higher operating temperatures and cooling power budgets. We demonstrate an optically-driven cryogenic millimeter-wave source with a power efficiency of $10^{-4}$ that can generate ${1}~\mathrm{\mu W}$ of RF power at 80 GHz with 1500 thermal photons of added noise at 4 K. Using this source, we perform frequency-domain spectroscopy of superconducting NbTiN resonators at 80-90 GHz. Our results show a promising approach to alleviate the efficiency-noise constraints on optically-driven superconducting circuits while leveraging the benefits of photonic signal delivery. Further optimization of power efficiency and noise at high frequencies could make photonic control of superconducting qubits viable at temperatures exceeding 1 kelvin., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Understanding the links between different phases of outflows from active galactic nuclei is a key goal in extragalactic astrophysics. Here we compare [OIII] $\lambda\lambda$4960,5008 outflow signatures in quasars with and without Broad Absorption Lines (BALs), aiming to test how the broad absorption troughs seen in the rest-frame ultraviolet are linked to the narrow line region outflows seen in the rest-frame optical. We present new near-infrared spectra from Magellan/FIRE which cover [OIII] in 12 quasars with 2.1 < z < 2.3, selected to have strong outflow signatures in CIV $\lambda$1550. Combining with data from the literature, we build a sample of 73 BAL, 115 miniBAL and 125 non-BAL QSOs with 1.5 < z < 2.6. The strength and velocity width of [OIII] correlate strongly with the CIV emission properties, but no significant difference is seen in the [OIII] emission-line properties between the BALs, non-BALs and miniBALs once the dependence on CIV emission is taken into account. A weak correlation is observed between the velocities of CIV BALs and [OIII] emission, which is accounted for by the fact that both outflow signatures correlate with the underlying CIV emission properties. Our results add to the growing evidence that BALs and non-BALs are drawn from the same parent population and are consistent with a scenario wherein BAL troughs are intermittent tracers of persistent quasar outflows, with a part of such outflow becoming optically thick along our line-of-sight for sporadic periods of time within which BALs are observed., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic observations for a sample of $45$ quasars at $6.50 < z \leq 7.64$ with absolute magnitudes at $1450$ {\AA} in the range $-28.82 \leq M_{1450} \leq -24.13$ and their composite spectrum. The median redshift and $M_{1450}$ of the quasars in the sample are $z_{\rm{median}}=6.71$ and $M_{1450,\rm{median}} \simeq -26.1$, respectively. The NIR spectra are taken with echelle spectrographs, complemented with additional data from optical long slit instruments, and then reduced consistently using the open-source Python-based spectroscopic data reduction pipeline PypeIt. The median value of the mean signal-to-noise ratios of the spectra in J, H, and K band (median $\langle \rm{SNR}_{\lambda} \rangle$) is: median $\langle \rm{SNR}_{J} \rangle=9.7$, median $\langle \rm{SNR}_{H} \rangle=10.3$, and median $\langle \rm{SNR}_{K} \rangle=11.7$; demonstrating the good data quality. This work presents the largest medium/moderate-resolution sample of quasars at $z>6.5$ from ground-based instruments. Its homogeneity and reproducibility make it ideally suited for several scientific goals, i.e., the study of the quasar proximity zones and damping wings, the Ly$\alpha$ forest, the intergalactic medium's metal content, as well as other properties such as the distribution of SMBH masses and Eddington ratios. Our composite spectrum is compared to others at both high and low-$z$ from the literature, showing differences in the strengths of many emission lines, probably due to differences in luminosity among the samples, but a consistent continuum slope, which proves that the same spectral features are preserved in quasars at different redshift ranges., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Low Level RF (LLRF) control systems of linear accelerators (LINACs) are typically implemented with heterodyne based architectures, which have complex analog RF mixers for up and down conversion. The Gen 3 Radio Frequency System-on-Chip (RFSoC) device from AMD Xilinx integrates data converters with maximum RF frequency of 6~GHz. This enables direct RF sampling of C-band LLRF signal typically operated at 5.712 GHz without any analogue mixers, which can significantly simplify the system architecture. The data converters sample RF signals in higher order Nyquist zones and then up or down convert digitally by the integrated data path in RFSoC. The closed-loop feedback control firmware implemented in FPGA integrated in RFSoC can process the base-band signal from the ADC data path and calculate the updated phase and amplitude to be up-mixed by the DAC data path. We have developed a C-band LLRF control RFSoC platform with direct RF sampling, which targets Cool Copper Collider (C3) and other C or S band LINAC research and development projects. In this paper, the architecture of the platform will be described. We have optimized the configuration of the data converter and characterized performance of them with RF pulses. The test results for some of the key performance parameters for the LLRF platform with our custom solid-state amplifier, such as phase and amplitude stability, will be discussed in this paper.

Solid-state nanopore gating inspired by biological ion channels is gaining increasing traction due to a large range of applications in biosensing and drug delivery. Integration of stimuli-responsive molecules such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) inside nanopores can enable temperature-dependent gating, which so far has only been demonstrated using external heaters. In this work, we combine plasmonic resonators inside the nanopore architecture with PNIPAM to enable optical gating of individual or multiple nanopores with micrometer resolution and a switching speed of few milliseconds by thermo-plasmonics. We achieve a temperature change of 40 kelvin per millisecond and demonstrate the efficacy of this method using nanopore ionic conductivity measurements that enables selective activation of individual nanopores in an array. Moreover, the selective gating of specific nanopores in an array can set distinct ionic conductance levels: low, medium, and high (i.e., 0, 1, and 2), which could be exploited for logical gating with optical signal control. Such selective optical gating in nanopore arrays marks a breakthrough in nanofluidics, as it paves the way towards smart devices that offer multifunctional applications including biosensing, targeted drug delivery, and fluidic mixing.

We report on deep SCUBA-2 observations at 850$\mu$m and NOEMA spectroscopic measurements at 2 mm of the environment surrounding the luminous, massive ($M_{*} \approx 2 \times 10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$) Herschel-selected source HerBS-70. This source was revealed by previous NOEMA observations to be a binary system of dusty star-forming galaxies at $z= 2.3$, with the East component (HerBS-70E) hosting an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). The SCUBA-2 observations detected, in addition to the binary system, twenty-one sources at $> 3.5 \sigma$ over an area of $\sim 25$ square comoving Mpc with a sensitivity of $\sigma_{850} = 0.75$ mJy. The surface density of continuum sources around HerBS-70 is three times higher than for field galaxies. The NOEMA spectroscopic measurements confirm the protocluster membership of three of the nine brightest sources through their CO(4 - 3) line emission, yielding a volume density 36 times higher than for field galaxies. All five confirmed sub-mm galaxies in the HerBS-70 system have relatively short gas depletion times ($80 - 500$ Myr), indicating the onset of quenching for this protocluster core due to the depletion of gas. The dark matter halo mass of the HerBS-70 system is estimated around $5 \times{} 10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, with a projected current-day mass of $10^{15}$ M$_{\odot}$, similar to the local Virgo and Coma clusters. Recent discoveries of copious amounts of dust in quiescent galaxies (QGs) at high redshifts ($z\gtrsim 1-2$) challenge the conventional view that these objects have poor interstellar medium (ISM) in proportion to their stellar mass. We use the SIMBA cosmological simulation to explore the evolution of dust and cold gas content in QGs in relation to the quenching processes affecting them. We track the changes in the ISM dust abundance across the evolutionary history of QGs identified at $0 \lesssim z \lesssim2$ in the field and cluster environments. The QGs quench via diverse pathways, both rapid and slow, and exhibit a wide range of times elapsed between the quenching event and cold gas removal (from $\sim650$ Myr to $\sim8$ Gyr). We find that quenching modes attributed to the feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) do not affect dust and cold gas within the same timescales. Remarkably, QGs may replenish their dust content in the quenched phase primarily due to internal processes and marginally by external factors such as minor mergers. The key mechanism for re-formation of dust is prolonged grain growth on gas-phase metals, it is effective within $\sim100$ Myr after the quenching event, and rapidly increases the dust-to-gas mass ratio in QGs above the standard values ($\delta_{\rm DGR}\gtrsim1/100$). As a result, despite heavily depleted cold gas reservoirs, roughly half of QGs maintain little evolution in their ISM dust with stellar age within the first 2 Gyr following the quenching. Overall, we predict that relatively dusty QGs ($M_{\rm dust}/M_{\star}\gtrsim10^{-3}-10^{-4}$) arise from both fast and slow quenchers, and are prevalent in systems of intermediate and low stellar masses ($9<\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})<10.5$). Ultrafast electron diffraction using MeV energy beams(MeV-UED) has enabled unprecedented scientific opportunities in the study of ultrafast structural dynamics in a variety of gas, liquid and solid state systems. Broad scientific applications usually pose different requirements for electron probe properties. Due to the complex, nonlinear and correlated nature of accelerator systems, electron beam property optimization is a time-taking process and often relies on extensive hand-tuning by experienced human operators. Algorithm based efficient online tuning strategies are highly desired. Here, we demonstrate multi-objective Bayesian active learning for speeding up online beam tuning at the SLAC MeV-UED facility. The multi-objective Bayesian optimization algorithm was used for efficiently searching the parameter space and mapping out the Pareto Fronts which give the trade-offs between key beam properties. Such scheme enables an unprecedented overview of the global behavior of the experimental system and takes a significantly smaller number of measurements compared with traditional methods such as a grid scan. This methodology can be applied in other experimental scenarios that require simultaneously optimizing multiple objectives by explorations in high dimensional, nonlinear and correlated systems.

The Standard Model is an up-to-date theory that best summarizes current knowledge in particle physics. Although some problems still remain open, it represents the leading model which all physicists refer to. One of the pillars which underpin the Standard Model is represented by the Lorentz invariance of the equations that form its backbone. These equations made it possible to predict the existence of particles and phenomena that experimental physics had not yet been able to detect. The first hint of formulating a fundamental theory of particles can be found in the 1932 Majorana equation, formulated when electrons and protons were the only known particles. Today we know that parts of the hypotheses set by Majorana were not correct, but his equation hid concepts that are found in the Standard Model. In this study, the Majorana equation is revisited and solved for free particles. The time-like, light-like and space-like solutions, represented by infinite-component wave functions, are discussed. Furthermore, by introducing subsidiary conditions on the mass term, it is possible to quantize both the fermionic and the bosonic towers, obtaining the mass spectrum of the entire family of charged leptons, baryons and mesons., Comment: 22 pages

A high-energy electron-positron collider has been widely recognized by the particle physics community to be the next crucial step for detailed studies of the Higgs boson and other fundamental particles and processes. Several proposals for such colliders, either linear or circular, are currently under evaluation. Any such collider will be required to reach high lumimosities, in order to collect enough data at a reasonable time scale, while at the same time coping with high rates of background particles produced from beam-beam interactions during the collisions. In this paper, we analyze the luminosity and beam-beam interaction characteristics of the Cool Copper Collider (C$^3$) and perform a comparison with other linear collider proposals. We conclude that C$^3$ can reach the same or higher collision rates as the other proposals, without having to cope with higher beam-induced background fluxes. Thus, C$^3$ emerges as an attractive option for a future electron-positron collider, benefiting from the collective advancements in beam delivery and final focus system technologies developed by other linear collider initiatives., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables ; includes supplemental material. A neural network for software compensation was developed for the highly granular CALICE Analogue Hadronic Calorimeter (AHCAL). The neural network uses spatial and temporal event information from the AHCAL and energy information, which is expected to improve sensitivity to shower development and the neutron fraction of the hadron shower. The neural network method produced a depth-dependent energy weighting and a time-dependent threshold for enhancing energy deposits consistent with the timescale of evaporation neutrons. Additionally, it was observed to learn an energy-weighting indicative of longitudinal leakage correction. In addition, the method produced a linear detector response and outperformed a published control method regarding resolution for every particle energy studied.

The evolution of dwarf galaxies is dramatically affected by gaseous and dusty outflows, which can easily deprive their interstellar medium of the material needed for the formation of new stars, simultaneously enriching their surrounding circumgalactic medium (CGM). In this letter, we present the first evidence of extended [CII] 158 $\mu$m line and dust continuum emission in local dwarf galaxies hosting star-formation-driven outflows. By stacking the [CII], far-infrared, and near-UV (NUV) emission obtained from Herschel and GALEX data, we derived the average radial profiles, and compared the spatial extension of gas, dust, and stellar activity in dwarf galaxies. We find that [CII] and dust emissions are comparable to each other, and more extended than the NUV continuum. The [CII] size is in agreement with that measured for $z>4$ star-forming galaxies, suggesting that similar mechanisms could be at the origin of the observed atomic carbon reservoir around local and high-$z$ sources. The cold dust follows the [CII] emission, going beyond the stellar continuum as opposed to what is typically observed in the early Universe where measurements can be affected by the poor sensitivity and faintness of dust emission in the CGM of high-$z$ galaxies. We attribute the extended [CII] and dust continuum emission to the presence of galactic outflows. As local dwarf galaxies are considered analogs of primordial sources, we expect that comparable feedback processes can be at the origin of the observed [CII] halos at $z>4$, dominating over other possible formation mechanisms., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Fibrous mats with hydrophobic and oleophilic properties have been fabricated and used as absorbents of oil from stable water in oil emulsions.

Herein we present the fabrication of hydrophobic and oleophilic poly(methyl methacrylate) based nanocomposite fibrous mats with magnetic properties, and their utilization for oil removal from stable water oil emulsions.

Large future sky surveys, such as the LSST, will provide optical photometry for billions of objects. This paper aims to construct a proxy for the far ultraviolet attenuation (AFUVp) from the optical data alone, enabling the rapid estimation of the star formation rate (SFR) for galaxies that lack UV or IR data. To mimic LSST observations, we use the deep panchromatic optical coverage of the SDSS Photometric Catalogue DR~12, complemented by the estimated physical properties for the SDSS galaxies from the GALEX-SDSS-WISE Legacy Catalog (GSWLC) and inclination information obtained from the SDSS DR7. We restricted our sample to the 0.025-0.1 z-spec range and investigated relations among surface brightness, colours, and dust attenuation in the far UV range for star-forming galaxies obtained from the spectral energy distribution (SED). {Dust attenuation is best correlated with (u-r) colour and the surface brightness in the u band ($\rm \mu_{u}$). We provide a dust attenuation proxy for galaxies on the star-forming main sequence, which can be used for the LSST or any other type of broadband optical survey. The mean ratio between the catalogue values of SFR and those estimated using optical-only SDSS data with the AFUVp prior calculated as $\Delta$SFR=log(SFR$_{\tiny{\mbox{this work}}}$/SFR$_{\tiny{}\texttt{GSWLC}}$) is found to be less than 0.1~dex, while runs without priors result in an SFR overestimation larger than 0.3~dex. The presence or absence of theAFUVp has a negligible influence on the stellar mass estimation (with $\Delta$M$_{star}$ in the range from 0 to $-0.15$ dex). Forthcoming deep optical observations of the LSST Deep Drilling Fields, which also have multi-wavelength data, will enable one to calibrate the obtained relation for higher redshift galaxies and, possibly, extend the study towards other types of galaxies, such as early-type galaxies off the main sequence., Comment: 18 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Aims. We investigate the role of photo-evaporation of dust exposed to the radiation field from hot young stars and planetary nebulae (PNe) as a possible destruction mechanism of dust grains in the interstellar medium (ISM). Methods. We estimate photo-evaporation induced by the feedback of individual or clustered young stars, of PNe and in the presence of a variable radiation field scaled with the interstellar radiation field. For PNe we investigate dust photo-evaporation of both dust grains already present in the ISM as well as those formed in the last phases of the evolution of thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars. We include dust photo-evaporation rate in models of dust evolution in galaxies for different assumptions of the dust growth scenario, dust-to-gas ratios, star formation histories, and initial mass functions of the stars. Results. For all the cases considered, we find that both photo-evaporation from young stars and from PNe are negligible with respect to other dust removal processes such as destruction from supernovae shocks, astration and possibly outflow. Grains are stable against photo-evaporation if they are exposed to a radiation field which is up to 10^7 times the interstellar radiation field. Conclusions. Dust grains of size >= 0.01 microns are not efficiently destroyed by photo-evaporation also in the presence of a strong radiation field., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We generalise a result from [Bak15] on K3 type hyperk\"ahler manifolds proving that a line in a lagrangian plane on a hyperk\"ahler manifold $X$ of Kummer type has Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki square $-\frac{n+1}{2}$ and order 2 in the discriminant group of $H^2(X,\mathbb{Z})$. Vice versa, an extremal primitive ray of the Mori cone verifying these conditions is in fact the class of a line in some lagrangian plane. In doing so, we show, on moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects on an abelian surface, that lagrangian planes on the fibre of the Albanese map correspond to sublattices of the Mukai lattice verifying some numerical condition.

This work describes the LLRF and control system in use for a novel accelerator structure developed for a compact design operating in C-band developed by SLAC, with collaboration from RadiaBeam and RadiaSoft. This design is a pulsed RF/pulsed beam system that only provides minimal monitoring for control of each two-cavity pair. Available signals include only a forward and reflected signal for each pair; such a design requires careful consideration of calibration and power-on routines, as well an understanding of how to correct for disturbances caused by the entire RF signal chain, including a new SSA, klystron, and distribution system. An AMD Xilinx RF-SoC with a separate supervisory computer is the LLRF system core, with on-board pulse-to-pulse feedback corrections. This work presents the current status of the project, as well as obstacles and manufacturing plans from the viewpoint of developing for larger-volume manufacturing. The iMaNGA project uses a forward-modelling approach to compare the predictions of cosmological simulations with observations from SDSS-IV/MaNGA. We investigate the dependency of age and metallicity radial gradients on galaxy morphology, stellar mass, stellar surface mass density ($\Sigma_*$), and environment. The key of our analysis is that observational biases affecting the interpretation of MaNGA data are emulated in the theoretical iMaNGA sample. The simulations reproduce the observed global stellar population scaling relations with positive correlations between galaxy mass and age/metallicity quite well and also produce younger stellar populations in late-type in agreement with observations. We do find interesting discrepancies, though, that can inform the physics and further development of the simulations. Ages of spiral galaxies and low-mass ellipticals are overestimated by about 2-4 Gyr. Radial metallicity gradients are steeper in iMaNGA than in MaNGA, a discrepancy most prominent in spiral and lenticular galaxies. Also, the observed steepening of metallicity gradients with increasing galaxy mass is not well matched by the simulations. We find that the theoretical radial profiles of surface mass density $\Sigma_*$ are steeper than in observations except for the most massive galaxies. In both MaNGA and iMaNGA [Z/H] correlates with $\Sigma_*$, however, the simulations systematically predict lower [Z/H] by almost a factor of 2 at any $\Sigma_*$. Most interestingly, for galaxies with stellar mass $\log M_*\leq 10.80 M_\odot$ the MaNGA data reveal a positive correlation between galaxy radius and [Z/H] at fixed $\Sigma_*$, which is not recovered in iMaNGA. Finally, the dependence on environmental density is negligible in both the theoretical iMaNGA and the observed MaNGA data.

We aim to understand what drives the IRX-\beta dust attenuation relation at intermediate redshift (0.5 < z < 0.8) in star-forming galaxies. We investigate the role of various galaxy properties in shaping this observed relation. We use robust [O ii] {\lambda}3727, [O iii] {\lambda}{\lambda}4959, 5007, and H\beta line detections of our statistical sample of 1049 galaxies to estimate the gas-phase metallicities. We derive key physical properties that are necessary to study galaxy evolution, such as the stellar masses and the star formation rates, using the spectral energy distribution fitting tool CIGALE. Equivalently, we study the effect of galaxy morphology (mainly the S\'ersic index n and galaxy inclination) on the observed IRX-\beta scatter. We also investigate the role of the environment in shaping dust attenuation in our sample. We find a strong correlation of the IRX-\beta relation on gas-phase metallicity in our sample, and also strong correlation with galaxy compactness characterized by the S\'ersic indexes. Correlations are also seen with stellar masses, specific star formation rates and the stellar ages of our sources. Metallicity strongly correlates with the IRX-\beta scatter, this also results from the older stars and higher masses at higher beta values. Galaxies with higher metallicities show higher IRX and higher beta values. The correlation with specific dust mass strongly shifts the galaxies away from the IRX-\beta relation towards lower \b{eta} values. We find that more compact galaxies witness a larger amount of attenuation than less compact galaxies. There is a subtle variation in the dust attenuation scatter between edge-on and face-on galaxies, but the difference is not statistically significant. Additive manufacturing is a versatile technique that shows promise in providing quick and dynamic manufacturing for complex engineering problems. Research has been ongoing into the use of additive manufacturing for potential applications in radiofrequency (RF) component technologies. Here we present a method for developing an effective prototype load produced out of 316L stainless steel on a direct metal laser sintering machine. The model was tested within simulation software to verify the validity of the design. The load structure was manufactured utilizing an online digital manufacturing company, showing the viability of using easily accessible tools to manufacture RF structures. The produced load was able to produce an S$_{11}$ value of -22.8 dB at the C-band frequency of 5.712 GHz while under vacuum. In a high power test, the load was able to terminate a peak power of 8.1 MW. Discussion includes future applications of the present research and how it will help to improve the implementation of future accelerator concepts.

This Technical Design Report presents a detailed description of all aspects of the LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experiment that will combine the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL with a high-intensity laser, to explore the uncharted terrain of strong-field quantum electrodynamics characterised by both high energy and high intensity, reaching the Schwinger field and beyond. The further implications for the search of physics beyond the Standard Model are also discussed.

The z-GAL survey observed 137 bright Herschel-selected targets with the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array, with the aim to measure their redshift and study their properties. Several of them have been resolved into multiple sources. Consequently, robust spectroscopic redshifts have been measured for 165 individual galaxies in the range 0.8

(Abridged) We present the dust properties of 125 bright Herschel galaxies selected from the z-GAL survey. The large instantaneous bandwidth of NOEMA provides an exquisite sampling of the underlying dust continuum emission at 2 and 3 mm in the observed frame, with flux densities in at least four side bands for each source. Together with the available Herschel 250, 350, and 500 micron and SCUBA-2 850 micron flux densities, the spectral energy distribution of each source can be analyzed from the far-infrared to the millimeter, with a fine sampling of the Rayleigh-Jeans tail. This wealth of data provides a solid basis to derive robust dust properties, in particular the dust emissivity index, beta, and the dust temperature, T(dust). In order to demonstrate our ability to constrain the dust properties, we used a flux-generated mock catalog and analyzed the results under the assumption of an optically thin and optically thick modified black body emission. For the z-GAL sources, we report a range of dust emissivities with beta ~ 1.5 - 3 estimated up to high precision with relative uncertainties that vary in the range 7% - 15%, and an average of 2.2 +/- 0.3. We find dust temperatures varying from 20 to 50 K with an average of T(dust) ~ 30 K for the optically thin case and ~38 K in the optically thick case. For all the sources, we estimate the dust masses and apparent infrared luminosities (based on the optically thin approach). An inverse correlation is found between T(dust) and beta, which is similar to what is seen in the local Universe. Finally, we report an increasing trend in the dust temperature as a function of redshift at a rate of 6.5 +/- 0.5 K/z for this 500 micron-selected sample. (Abridged) Using the IRAM NOEMA interferometer, we measures the redshifts of 126 bright galaxies detected in the Herschel H-ATLAS, HeLMS, and HerS surveys. We report reliable spectroscopic redshifts for a total of 124 of the Herschel-selected galaxies. The redshifts are estimated from scans of the 3 and 2-mm bands (and, in one case, the 1-mm band) and are based on the detection of at least two emission lines. Together with the Pilot Programme (Neri et al. 2020), including spectroscopic redshifts of 11 sources, our survey has derived precise redshifts for 135 bright Herschel-selected galaxies, making it the largest sample of high-z galaxies with robust redshifts to date. Most emission lines detected are from 12CO (mainly from J=2-1 to 5-4), with some sources seen in [CI] and H2O emission lines. The spectroscopic redshifts are in the range 0.8

It is commonly expected that drivers maintain a driving speed that is lower than or around the posted speed limit, as failure to obey may result in safety risks and fines. By taking randomly selected road segments as examples, this study compares the percentages of speeding vehicles in five countries worldwide, namely, two European countries (Germany and Italy), two Asian countries (Japan and China), and one North American country (the United States). Contrary to expectations, our results show that more than 80% of drivers violate the posted speed limits in the studied road segments in Italy, Japan, and the United States. In particular, a significant portion (45.3%) of drivers in Italy exceed the posted speed limit by a substantial margin (30 km/h), while few speeding vehicles are observed in the road segment examined in China. Meanwhile, it is found that drivers on low-speed-limit roads are more likely to exceed the posted speed limit, particularly when there are fewer on-road vehicles. The comparison of different countries' speeding fines indicates that for the purpose of preventing speeding, increasing fines (as Italy has done) is less effective than enhancing supervision (as China has done). The findings remind law enforcement agencies and traffic authorities of the importance of the supervision of driver's behavior and the necessity of revisiting the rationale for the current speed limit settings.

The Rasnik 3-point alignment system, now widely applied in particle physics experiments and in the instrumentation of gravitational wave experiments, can be used as N-point alignment system by daisy chain N individual 3-point systems. The conceptual implementation of Rasnik chains in C3 is presented. The proper operation of a laser diode and a CMOS image sensor in liquid nitrogen has been verified. Next plans for testing a small but complete system, immersed in liquid nitrogen, are presented.

The particle physics community has agreed that an electron-positron collider is the next step for continued progress in this field, giving a unique opportunity for a detailed study of the Higgs boson. Several proposals are currently under evaluation of the international community. Any large particle accelerator will be an energy consumer and so, today, we must be concerned about its impact on the environment. This paper evaluates the carbon impact of the construction and operations of one of these Higgs factory proposals, the Cool Copper Collider. It introduces several strategies to lower the carbon impact of the accelerator. It proposes a metric to compare the carbon costs of Higgs factories, balancing physics reach, energy needs, and carbon footprint for both construction and operations, and compares the various Higgs factory proposals within this framework. For the Cool Copper Collider, the compact 8 km footprint and the possibility for cut-and-cover construction greatly reduce the dominant contribution from embodied carbon., Comment: 20 Pages, 6 Figures
