Assessment is an ongoing process integrated within instruction (NCTM 2000). Assessment activities can take on a variety of forms, one being performance tasks. Concept mapping is a technique that offers students opportunities to demonstrate learning through performance. In this example, elementary school students designed math concept maps, allowing their teachers to assess the children's concept connections and other valuable, relevant skills before determining the steps necessary for further learning.

The purpose of this article is to present various techniques that will engage young children, ages 3–8, in learning science and mathematics. Children actively engage in acquiring basic science and mathematics concepts as they explore their environment. The methods presented are intended to meet the developmental levels of young learners as they make connections with science and mathematics. Also included is a review of science and mathematics content and process skills appropriate for early childhood age learners.

“What else is in the mystery bag?” “That was fun!” “Can we do another one?” Comments such as these are typical of children who have experienced the excitement of participating in conceptattainment model activities. Discovering concepts through active engagement challenges learners of all ages to think inductively as they classify information.
