Funding Information: To achieve these objectives, Milani is carrying two scientific payloads, the ASPECT visual and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) imaging spectrometer and the VISTA thermogravimeter aimed at collecting and characterizing volatiles and dust particles below 10 μm. Additionally, navigation payloads include a visible navigation camera and lidar. The Milani consortium is composed of entities and institutions from Italy, the Czech Republic, and Finland. The consortium Prime is Tyvak International, responsible for the whole program management and platform design, development, integration, testing, and final delivery to the customer. HULD contributes to developing the mission-specific software. VTT is the main payload (ASPECT hyperspectral imager) provider and is supported by the following entities dealing with ASPECT-related development: University of Helsinki (ASPECT calibration); Reaktor Space Lab (ASPECT Data Processing Unit development), Institute of Geology of the Czech Academy of Sciences (ASPECT scientific algorithms requirements and testing); and Brno University of Technology (ASPECT scientific algorithms development). Hera is a planetary defense mission under development in the Space Safety and Security Program of the European Space Agency for launch in 2024 October. It will rendezvous in late 2026 December with the binary asteroid (65803) Didymos and in particular its moon, Dimorphos, which will be impacted by NASA’s DART spacecraft on 2022 September 26 as the first asteroid deflection test. The main goals of Hera are the detailed characterization of the physical properties of Didymos and Dimorphos and of the crater made by the DART mission, as well as measurement of the momentum transfer efficiency resulting from DART’s impact. The data from the Hera spacecraft and its two CubeSats will also provide significant insights into asteroid science and the evolutionary history of our solar system. Hera will perform the first rendezvous with a binary asteroid and provide new measurements, such as radar sounding of an asteroid interior, which will allow models in planetary science to be tested. Hera will thus provide a crucial element in the global effort to avert future asteroid impacts at the same time as providing world-leading science.

The NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission will demonstrate asteroid deflection by a kinetic impactor. DART will impact Dimorphos, the secondary member of the (65803) Didymos system, in late September to early October, 2022 in order to change the binary orbit period. DART will carry a 6U CubeSat called LICIACube, contributed by the Italian Space Agency, to document the DART impact and to observe the impact ejecta. LICIACube will be released by DART 10 days prior to Didymos encounter, and LICIACube will fly by Dimorphos at closest approach distance of about 51 km and with a closest approach time delay of about 167 s after the DART impact. LICIACube will observe the structure and evolution of the DART impact ejecta plume and will obtain images of the surfaces of both bodies at best ground sampling about 1.4 m per pixel. LICIACube imaging importantly includes the non-impact hemisphere of the target body, the side not imaged by DART. The LICIACube flyby trajectory, notably the closest approach distance and the time delay of closest approach, are designed to optimize the study of ejecta plume evolution without exposing the satellite to impact hazard. LICIACube imaging will determine the direction of the ejecta plume and the ejection angles, and will further help to determine the ejecta momentum transfer efficiency β. The ejecta plume structure, as it evolves over time, is determined by the amount of ejecta that has reached a given altitude at a given time. The LICIACube plume images enable characterization of the ejecta mass versus velocity distribution, which is strongly dependent on target properties like strength and porosity and is therefore a powerful diagnostic of the DART impact, complementary to measurements of the DART impact crater by the ESA Hera mission which will arrive at Didymos in 2026. Hera will measure crater radius and crater volume to determine the total volume of ejecta, which together with a ejecta mass-velocity distribution gives a full characterization of the DART impact. Models of the ejecta plume evolution as imaged by LICIACube show how LICIACube images can discriminate between different target physical properties (mainly strength and porosity), thereby allowing inferences of the magnitude of the ejecta momentum. Measured ejecta plume optical depth profiles can distinguish between gravity-controlled and strength-controlled impact cases and help determine target physical properties. LICIACube ejecta plume images further provide information on the direction of the ejecta momentum as well as the magnitude, requiring full 2-D simulations of the plume images. We will present new simulation model optical depth profiles across the plume at arbitrary positions. Asteroid (65803) Didymos is an S-type [1] Apollo binary system characterized by a 780±30 m size primary, called Didymos, and a 164±18 m size secondary, called Dimorphos, orbiting at a distance of ~1.19 km [2]. The primary rotation period is 2.26 h [2], close to the 2.2 h disruption spin barrier [3], while the period of revolution of Dimorphos around the primary is 11.9217+0.0002 h [4]. This asteroid has been selected as the target of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART, [5]), whose main goal is to impact Dimorphos at a speed of 6.6 km/s on September 30, 2022, thereby demonstrating the kinetic impactor technique and evaluating the resulting impulsive deflection. The scientific camera onboard DART is called DRACO, i.e. the Didymos Reconnaissance and Asteroid Camera for Op-nav [6]: its main goals are to image Didymos for optical navigation, to resolve the two bodies and support the spacecraft autonomous navigation to the target, and to locate the impact site precisely and characterize its local surface features. To complement such observations, the Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids (LICIACube, [7]) will be released from DART ten days before the impact, and autonomously guided through a flyby with closest approach distance of ~55 km from the target. LICIACube cameras LEIA (LICIACube Explorer Imaging for Asteroid - narrow angle camera) and LUKE (LICIACube Unit Key Explorer - wide angle camera) will then safely witness the redirection test in-situ, while its crater, as well as the ejecta and plume are being formed.

The primary goal of the AMBASSADOR (A Main Belt Asteroid Seismic study and Sample Acquisition to Determine meteorite ORigins) mission to S-class asteroid 7 Iris to determine the relationship between asteroids of this class and meteorites. This goal will be accomplished through collection of surface samples to be returned to Earth and acquisition of high-resolution visible and near-infrared (NIR) spectral images of the asteroid's surface. AMBASSADOR will also constrain the internal structure of Iris by deploying a seismic network on the asteroid and conducting an active seismic experiment. The importance of such a mission is emphasized by its inclusion as an element of the “Building Blocks and Our Chemical Origins” Campaign of the NASA Roadmap, although currently no missions comparable to AMBASSADOR exist. AMBASSADOR is a two-component spacecraft comprising an orbiter and a lander that will travel together to Iris. The orbiter will carry a visible and NIR spectral camera which will perform global mapping of the asteroid at resolutions of ~28 m/pixel and -112 m/pixel, respectively. High-resolution imaging of several sites of interest, including potential landing sites, will be conducted at resolutions of ~1.4 m/pixel in the visible and ~5.4 m/pixel in the NIR. The orbiter will also deploy four penetrators each of which will include a seismometer and a transmitter and will be accompanied by an explosive charge. After selection of a landing site, the lander will separate and descend to the asteroid where it will perform imaging experiments and collect samples. Material will be collected by two different mechanisms: a chipping device able to collect regolith and coring devices able to collect samples from a solid surface. The lander will carry a camera similar to that on the orbiter to image the surface at sub-millimeter resolution before and after sample collection. Following surface operations, the lander will launch from the asteroid and redock with the orbiter for return to Earth. The major new technologies necessary for AMBASSADOR are in the subsystems propulsion, power, and attitude determination and control (ADC). Solar electric propulsion (SEP) makes the AMBASSADOR mission possible; when compared to strictly chemical propulsion, SEP reduces the mission duration from 17 years to five years and also increases the fraction of the launch mass that can be returned to Earth. The power requirements of SEP engines are quite high; thus, power will be provided by next generation copper-indium-selenium, thin film, amorphous mylar solar arrays. To enable autonomous landing, the ADC subsystem on the lander will include a stereo imager and a laser range-finder. For autonomous rendezvous and re-docking, both the lander and the orbiter will be equipped with formation flying sensors and the lander will be equipped with a docking camera while the orbiter will carry a target.
