Abstract Background In this era of molecular targeting therapy when various systematic treatments can be selected, prognostic biomarkers are required for the purpose of risk-directed therapy selection. Numerous reports of various malignancies have revealed that 18-Fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) accumulation, as evaluated by positron emission tomography, can be used to predict the prognosis of patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) from 18-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) on survival for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Methods A total of 26 patients with advanced or metastatic RCC were enrolled in this study. The FDG uptake of all RCC lesions diagnosed by conventional CT was evaluated by 18F-FDG PET/CT. The impact of SUVmax on patient survival was analyzed prospectively. Results FDG uptake was detected in 230 of 243 lesions (94.7%) excluding lung or liver metastases with diameters of less than 1 cm. The SUVmax of 26 patients ranged between 1.4 and 16.6 (mean 8.8 ± 4.0). The patients with RCC tumors showing high SUVmax demonstrated poor prognosis (P = 0.005 hazard ratio 1.326, 95% CI 1.089-1.614). The survival between patients with SUVmax equal to the mean of SUVmax, 8.8 or more and patients with SUVmax less than 8.8 were statistically different (P = 0.0012). This is the first report to evaluate the impact of SUVmax on advanced RCC patient survival. However, the number of patients and the follow-up period were still not extensive enough to settle this important question conclusively. Conclusions The survival of patients with advanced RCC can be predicted by evaluating their SUVmax using 18F-FDG-PET/CT. 18F-FDG-PET/CT has potency as an "imaging biomarker" to provide helpful information for the clinical decision-making.

Counterfeiting of financial cards and marketable securities is a major social problem globally. Electronic identification and image recognition are common anti-counterfeiting techniques, yet they can be overcome by understanding the corresponding algorithms and analysis methods. The present work describes a physically unclonable functions taggant, in an aqueous-soluble ink, based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering of discrete self-assemblies of Au nanoparticles. Using this stealth nanobeacon, we detected a fingerprint-type Raman spectroscopy signal that we clearly identified even on a business card with a pigment mask such as copper-phthalocyanine printed on it. Accordingly, we have overcome the reverse engineering problem that is otherwise inherent to analogous anti-counterfeiting techniques. One can readily tailor the ink to various information needs and application requirements. Our stealth nanobeacon printing will be particularly useful for steganography and provide a sensitive fingerprint for anti-counterfeiting., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

Background: High-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is thought to be associated with a higher risk of recurrence and progression. A recent study revealed that a high De Ritis ratio was a risk factor in some solid malignancies. This study examined the importance of the De Ritis ratio as a prognostic marker in high-risk NMIBC., Materials and Methods: A total of 138 patients who were initially diagnosed with high-risk NMIBC between January 2012 to December 2016 were enrolled in this study. The criteria for the high-risk classification followed the EAU guidelines. The recurrence-free and progression-free survival of the higher and lower De Ritis ratio groups were compared. The cut-off value of the De Ritis ratio was set at 1.35, based on a receiver operator curve analysis., Results: The median observation period was 50.3 months. Among these patients, 32 (23.1%) patients developed recurrent disease and 15 (10.9%) patients showed progression. Self-cleaning surfaces often make use of superhydrophobic coatings that repel water. Here, we report a hydrophobic Si nanospring surface that effectively suppresses wetting by repelling water droplets. The dynamic response of Si nanospring arrays fabricated by glancing-angle deposition is investigated. These hydrophobic arrays of vertically standing nanosprings (about 250 nm high and 60 nm apart) allow the droplets to rebound within a few milliseconds after contact. Amazingly, the morphology of the nanostructures influences the impact dynamics. The rebound time and coefficient of restitution are higher for Si nanosprings than for vertical Si columns. By considering the droplet/nanospring surface as a coupled-spring system, we argue that the restoring force of the nanosprings may be responsible for the water-droplet rebound. The bouncing phenomena studied here are essential in the design of self-cleaning surfaces and are also of fundamental importance for the study of wetting behavior on nanostructures., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Recently, studies have been carried out to combine surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates that are based on either localized surface plasmon or surface plasmon polariton structures. By combining these two systems, the individual drawbacks of each can be overcome. However, the manufacturing methods involved so far are sophisticated, labor-intensive, expensive, and technically demanding. We propose a facile method for the fabrication of a flexible plasmonic nanoslit surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor. We utilized the pattern on periodic optical disks as an inexpensive substitute for printing the periodic pattern on polydimethylsiloxane with soft imprint lithography. The Ag nanoslits were fabricated by serial bideposition using the dynamic oblique angle deposition technique. The nanoslit structures were physically and optically characterized, and the experimental results were compared to the results of the numerical simulation: Monte Carlo and finite-difference time-domain simulation. The AgNS samples showed excellent SERS performance with an enhancement factor of ∼10 5 and a limit of detection of 5 × 10 -7 g/mL for a Rhodamine 6G solution. Their biosensing capability was demonstrated by the sensing of bilirubin.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. In patients with AD/HD, a decrease in the total and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep times has been observed. We have previously reported that mice with REM sleep deprivation-induced stress (REMSD) may show the hyperactivity- and inattention-like symptoms of AD/HD. However, in this model, impulsivity has not yet been investigated. Impulsivity and anxiety-related behaviors are evaluated by the elevated plus maze test (EPM). In this study, we investigated whether REMSD causes changes in the EPM and expression of alpha2A-adrenoceptors in the hippocampus and frontal cortex in a mouse model. Mice were deprived of REM sleep intermittently using the small-platform method (20 h/d) for 3 d. The time spent in the open arm and the expression levels of alpha2A-adrenoceptor in the hippocampus were significantly increased and decreased, respectively, by the REMSD. The time spent in the open arm was significantly limited by oxymetazoline (an alpha2A-adrenoceptor agonist), methylphenidate, and atomoxetine, which are clinically used to treat AD/HD. Moreover, the positive effects of oxymetazoline were attenuated by yohimbine and BRL44408, which are selective alpha2- and alpha2A-adrenoceptor antagonists, respectively. These results suggest that the increase in the time spent in the open arm induced by REMSD may serve as a model of impulsivity in AD/HD. Furthermore, the REMSD eliciting impulsivity-like behavior and the low-levels of anxiety may be linked to alpha2A-adrenoceptor signaling, as indicated by a decrease in alpha2A-adrenoceptor signaling, particularly in the mouse hippocampus.

We investigate the control of flow direction around a water vapor bubble using the thermoplasmonic effect of a gold nanoisland film (GNF) under laser irradiation with multiple spots. By focusing a laser spot on the GNF immersed in degassed water, a water vapor bubble with a diameter of ~10 μm is generated. Simultaneously, a sub laser spot was focused next to the bubble to yield a temperature gradient in the direction parallel to the GNF surface. Consequently, rapid flow was generated around the bubble, whose flow direction was dependent on the power of the sub laser spot. The observed flow was well-described using a stokeslet; the latter contained components normal and parallel to the GNF surface and was set to 10 μm above the GNF. This technique allows us to apply a significant force on the microfluid at the vicinity of the wall in the direction parallel to the wall surface, where the flow speed is generally suppressed by viscosity. It is expected to be useful for microfluidic pumping and microfluidic thermal management.

A liquid can be heated up above its boiling point, known as superheating. In this metastable state, the liquid temperature keeps increasing as the liquid is being heated. In contrast, we experimentally demonstrate that the temperature of superheated water can be kept constant even at elevated heating power. Water heating is done by the photothermal conversion of plasmonic titanium nitride nanostructures on a sapphire substrate under the illumination of continuous wave laser irradiation. The temperature-constant superheating is also observed for ethylene glycol and 2-acetoxy-1-methoxypropane, and is attributed to the high thermal conductivity of the substrate. This unique superheating yet achieved by a simple method can be useful in optical trapping and various optical heating applications.

Purpose: We investigated prospectively whether 18 F-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) can predict the overall survival (OS) of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) previously treated by molecular targeted therapies., Methods: Between 2009 and 2016, 81 patients who had received single molecular targeted therapies (43 sorafenib, 27 sunitinib, 8 temsirolimus and others) and were scheduled for second line molecular targeted therapies for advanced RCC were enrolled in this prospective study. FDG PET/CT was performed after first line molecular targeted therapies, the max SUVmax (highest standardized uptake value for each patient) recorded, and its association with OS compared with those of known risk factors. The median follow-up was 15.4 months (range 0.9-97.4 months)., Results: The max SUVmax of the 81 subjects ranged from undetectable to 23.0 (median 7.1). Patients with high max SUVmax had a poor prognosis and multivariate analysis with established risk factors showed that it was an independent predictor of survival (p < 0.001; hazard ratio 1.156; 95% confidence interval 1.080-1.239). Subclassification of patients by max SUVmax showed that the median OS of patients with max SUVmax < 7.0 (39), 7.0-12.0 (30), and ≥ 12.0 (12) were 32.8, 15.2, and 6.0 months, respectively. These differences are statistically significant (< 7.0 versus 7.0-12.0: p = 0.0333, 7.0-12.0 versus ≥ 12.0: p = 0.0235)., Conclusions: The max SUVmax by FDG PET/CT of patients with RCC evaluated after their first molecular targeted therapy predicts OS. FDG PET/CT is a useful "imaging biomarker" for patients with advanced RCC planning sequential molecular targeted therapies.

We experimentally investigated Marangoni flows around a microbubble in diluted 1-butanol/water, 2-propanol/water, and ethanol/water mixtures using the thermoplasmonic effect of gold nanoisland film. A laser spot on the gold nanoisland film acted as a highly localized heat source that was utilized to generate stable air microbubbles with diameters of 32-48 μm in the fluid and to induce a steep temperature gradient on the bubble surface. The locally heated bubble has a flow along the bubble surface, with the flow direction showing a clear transition depending on the alcohol concentrations. The fluid is driven from the hot to cold regions when the alcohol concentration is lower than the transition concentration, whereas it is driven from the cold to hot regions when the concentration is higher than the transition concentration. In addition, the transition concentration increases as the carbon number of the alcohol decreases. The observed flow direction transition is explained by the balance of the thermal- and solutal-Marangoni forces that are cancelled out for the transition concentration. The selective evaporation of the alcohol at the locally heated surface allows us to generate stable and rapid thermoplasmonic solutal-Marangoni flows in the alcohol/water mixtures.

We investigated time-dependent changes in the relapse features of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) after curative surgery. Between 1985 and 2015, 1398 patients with RCC (1226 clear cell RCC, 89 papillary RCC, and 53 chromophobe RCC) underwent curative surgery at Yokohama City University Hospital and its affiliated hospitals. We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathologic factors of patients with relapse after surgery. Median follow-up was 56.3 months. Recurrence occurred in 245 patients (217 clear cell RCC, 12 papillary RCC, and 3 chromophobe RCC). Papillary RCC and chromophobe RCC had no recurrence beyond 5 years after surgery, but 20 cases of clear cell carcinoma had recurrence beyond 10 years after surgery. The typical recurrence sites of clear cell RCC were lung (46.6%), bone (17.9%), liver (7.6%), and lymph nodes (6.5%). The proportion of recurrences at these typical sites was 83.9% for recurrences within 5 years, 76.3% between 5 and 10 years, and 40.0% beyond 10 years. In contrast, the proportion of retroperitoneal organ recurrence, including contralateral kidney, pancreas, and adrenal glands, increased with increasing time after surgery. Interestingly, the hazard ratio of typical site relapse decreased whereas that of retroperitoneal organ relapse increased in a time-dependent manner. In summary, clear cell RCC showed potential to relapse beyond 10 years after surgery. Recurrence at typical sites decreased whereas retroperitoneal organ recurrence increased in a time-dependent manner. Clinicians should check for recurrence at various sites beyond 10 years, especially in clear cell RCC.

A 75-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a complaint of difficulty swallowing and was diagnosed with left medullary infarction. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right adrenal tumor, 4 cm in size, and a left adrenal tumor, 1.6 cm in size. Abnormally high concentrations of serum catecholamine and urinary total metanephrine were also observed. In addition, 131 I-MIBG scintigraphy revealed an abnormal accumulation of 131 I in both tumors, which comprehensively led to the diagnosis of bilateral pheochromocytoma. Laparoscopic right adrenalectomy was planned first. After initiating pneumoperitoneum, the systolic blood pressure rose to 270 mmHg. Pneumoperitoneum was suspended briefly, and once resumed, the patient's blood pressure dropped gradually and was followed by cardiac arrest. A decision was made to interrupt surgery and start cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Once blood pressure stabilized above 160 mmHg, the patient was transferred to the intensive care unit with intubation. Subsequently, blood pressure was controlled to around 140 mmHg. He was discharged on the eleventh day after surgery without any major complications. Currently, he is being managed with more aggressive antihypertensive drug treatment.

We report a rare case of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in bladder diverticulum producing granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF). A 59-year-old man complaining of hematuria and right hip pain was admitted with a large cancer in the bladder diverticulum. His laboratory data showed leukocytosis of 20,100/ μ l (neutrophils : 92%) with an elevated G-CSF of 76. 6 pg/ml in the peripheral blood. After neoadjuvant chemotherapy (gemcitabine and cisplatin), radical cystectomy was performed to normalize serum leukocytosis and G-CSF. Histopathological diagnosis was G-CSF-producing SCC pT4N0. He appeared with left pelvic lymph node metastasis and right pulmonary metastasis 3 months after surgery. Therefore, he was treated with four courses of combination chemotherapy (paclitaxel, ifosfamide and nedaplatin) and radiation therapy at left pelvic lymph node metastasis. Computed tomography after these treatments showed complete response. The patient is alive with no evidence of tumor 16 months after surgery.

Purpose: We evaluated 18 F-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) results as outcome predictors for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) treated by everolimus (EVL), an inhibitor of mammalian target of rapamycin., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 30 patients who were treated with EVL for metastatic RCC between May 2010 and March 2015, by evaluating their FDG PET/CT result before and 1 month after starting EVL treatment. We examined the relationships between each patient's maximum standardized uptake value (max SUVmax) assessed by FDG PET/CT on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS)., Results: Median PFS for all 30 patients was 3.77 months (range 0.72-24.56 months) and median OS after EVL treatment of all 30 patients was 11.67 months (range 1.0-62.98 months). Enrolled patients were divided into two groups by max SUVmax prior to EVL (median = 7.6) and at 1 month after EVL treatment (median = 5.7). PFS were significantly shorter in higher max SUVmax prior to EVL (<7.6, PFS 7.8 vs 3.5 months, log-rank P = 0.017) and at 1 month after EVL (<5.7, PFS 10.6 vs 2.7 months, log-rank P = 0.002) than lower max SUVmax. OS were also significantly shorter in higher max SUVmax prior to EVL (<7.6, OS 18.1 vs 7.5 months, log-rank P = 0.010) and at 1 month after EVL (<5.7, OS 17.2 vs 7.5 months, log-rank P = 0.009) than lower max SUVmax. Multivariate Cox hazard regression analysis indicated that max SUVmax at 1 month after EVL is an independent predictor of both PFS and OS in patients treated with EVL although univariate regression analysis showed max SUVmax before EVL is a possible predictor., Conclusions: Max SUVmax assessed by FDG PET/CT prior to EVL and at 1 month after EVL treatment can accurately predict PFS and can guide decisions on whether to continue or change treatments for patients with EVL-treated RCC who suffer from adverse events.
