Single phases of the alpha, beta, and gamma polymorphs of the Fe2WO6 iron tungsten oxide were obtained through an aqueous solution route based on the combustion and heat treatment of a spray-dried precursor powder. Syntheses with Fe/W ratios not equal 2 identified a domain of solid solutions consistent with a Fe2-2xW1+x square O-x(6) scenario (x up to similar to 0.025) for the defect chemistry in the temperature range around 850 degrees C. The crystallographic characterizations revealed a random cationic distribution in an alpha-PbO2-type cell for the low-temperature polymorph (alpha) and pointed to a reconstructive mechanism for the formation of polymorph beta. A comparison of diffuse reflectance spectra confirmed the visual observation of minor color differences between the polymorphs by revealing small shifts of the absorption threshold; the Kubelka-Munk function and Tauc plots were used for comparison of the polymorphs and discussion of the results with respect to relevant literature.

Carbons are important in a multitude of applications, and thus, the reversible control of carbon structures is of high interest. Here we report the reversible formation of graphitic structures with three distinct interlayer distances in case of two carbide-derived carbons (CDCs) loaded under hydrogen pressure observed with in situ neutron scattering methods. The formation of these graphitic structures determined with in situ neutron diffraction is brought forth by the confinement of H2 in the porous structure when the temperature, T, is increased from T = 20 K–50 K under H2 loading from 68 mbar to 10 bar. The confinement of the desorbing H2 causes the pressure to increase inside the CDC structure and this increase of pressure is the cause for the reversible formation of graphitic domains. The confinement of H2 at T = 50 K is possible due to the presence of ultramicropores and suitable curved carbon structures. The three distinct formed graphitic domains correspond to a highly pressurized, conventional highly ordered graphitic, and disoriented graphitic domains with possible H2/H intercalation. In situ quasi-elastic neutron scattering and gas adsorption methods are used to determine the H2 transport properties and interactions with the CDCs.

We report the successful synthesis, crystal structure, and electrical properties of Sr3Re2O9, which contains Re6+ with the 5d1 configuration. This compound is isostructural with Ba3Re2O9 and shows a first-order structural phase transition at ∼370 K. The low-temperature (LT) phase crystallizes in a hettotype structure of Ba3Re2O9, which is different from that of the LT phase of Sr3W2O9, suggesting that the electronic state of Re6+ plays an important role in determining the crystal structure of the LT phase. The structural transition is accompanied by a sharp change in the electrical resistivity. This is likely a metal-insulator transition, as suggested by the electronic band calculation and magnetic susceptibility. In the LT phase, the ReO6 octahedra are rotated in a pseudo-a0a0a+ manner in Glazer notation, which corresponds to C-type orbital ordering. Paramagnetic dipole moments were confirmed to exist in the LT phase by muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements. However, the dipole moments shrink greatly because of the strong spin-orbit coupling in the Re ions. Thus, the electronic state of the LT phase corresponds to a Mott insulating state with strong spin-orbit interactions at the Re sites.

Sodium transition metal oxides with a layered structure are one of the most widely studied cathode materials for Na+-ion batteries. Since the mobility of Na+ in such cathode materials is a key factor that governs the performance of material, electrochemical and muon spin rotation and relaxation techniques are here used to reveal the Na+-ion mobility in a P2-type Na0.5MgxNi0.17-xMn0.83O2 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.05 and 0.07) cathode material. Combining electrochemical techniques such as galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique with mu+SR, we have successfully extracted both self-diffusion and chemical-diffusion under a potential gradient, which are essential to understand the electrode material from an atomic-scale viewpoint. The results indicate that a small amount of Mg substitution has strong effects on the cycling performance and the Na+ mobility. Amongst the tested cathode systems, it was found that the composition with a Mg content of x = 0.02 resulted in the best cycling stability and highest Na+ mobility based on electrochemical and mu+SR results. The current study clearly shows that for developing a new generation of sustainable energy-storage devices, it is crucial to study and understand both the structure as well as dynamics of ions in the material on an atomic level. LiFePO$_4$ (LFPO) is an archetypical and well-known cathode material for rechargeable Li-ion batteries. However, its quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) structure along with the Fe ions, LFPO also displays interesting low-temperature magnetic properties. Our team has previously utilized the muon spin rotation ($\mu^+$SR) technique to investigate both magnetic spin order as well as Li-ion diffusion in LFPO. In this initial study we extend our investigation and make use of high-pressure $\mu^+$SR to investigate effects on the low-$T$ magnetic order. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of the cubic spinel MgFeMnO4 were studied by using a series of in-house techniques along with large-scale neutron diffraction and muon spin rotation spectroscopy in the temperature range between 1.5 and 500 K. The detailed crystal structure is successfully refined by using a cubic spinel structure described by the space group Fd3̅m. Cations within tetrahedral A and octahedral B sites of the spinel were found to be in a disordered state. The extracted fractional site occupancies confirm the presence of antisite defects, which are of importance for the electrochemical performance of MgFeMnO4 and related battery materials. Neutron diffraction and muon spin spectroscopy reveal a ferrimagnetic order below TC = 394.2 K, having a collinear spin arrangement with antiparallel spins at the A and B sites, respectively. Our findings provide new and improved understanding of the fundamental properties of the ferrispinel materials and of their potential applications within future spintronics and battery devices., MgFeMnO4 crystallizes in the typical cubic spinel with cation disordering between the tetrahedra A and the octahedra B sites. Combining the in-house experiments with neutron (n0) and muon (μ+) techniques, we reveal (i) the accurate crystal structure and site occupancy of MgFeMnO4 at 300 and 500 K, (ii) clear presence of antisite defects that have importance for the compound’s electrochemical performance, and (iii) MgFeMnO4 enters into a collinear ferrimagnetic ordering below TC = 394.2 K.

Neutron diffraction and x-ray pair distribution function experiments were performed to investigate the magnetic and local crystal structures of ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}\mathrm{FeSb}{\mathrm{Se}}_{5}$ and to compare them with the average (i.e., long range) structural model previously obtained by single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Changes in the local crystal structure (i.e., in the second coordination sphere) are observed upon cooling from 295 to 95 K, resulting in deviations from the average (i.e., long range) crystal structure. In this paper, we demonstrate that these observations cannot be explained by local or long-range magnetoelastic effects involving Fe-Fe correlations. Instead, we found that the observed differences between local and average crystal structure can be explained by Sb-$5s$ lone pair dynamics. We also find that, below the N\'eel temperature $({T}_{N}=58\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K})$, the two distinct magnetic ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{3+}$ sites order collinearly, such that a combination of antiparallel and parallel spin arrangements along the $b$ axis results. The nearest-neighbor arrangement $({J}_{1}=6\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\AA{})$ is fully antiferromagnetic, while next-nearest-neighbor interactions are ferromagnetic in nature.

The authors study a charge-orbital-spin correlation of high-pressure synthesized quasi-one-dimensional NaMn${}_{2}$O${}_{4}$ and Li${}_{0.92}$Mn${}_{2}$O${}_{4}$ using a low-temperature neutron powder diffraction.

In the quest for developing novel and efficient batteries, a great interest has been raised for sustainable K-based honeycomb layer oxide materials, both for their application in energy devices as well as for their fundamental material properties. A key issue in the realization of efficient batteries based on such compounds, is to understand the K-ion diffusion mechanism. However, investigation of potassium-ion (K$$^+$$ + ) dynamics in materials using e.g. NMR and related techniques has so far been very challenging, due to its inherently weak nuclear magnetic moment, in contrast to other alkali ions such as lithium and sodium. Spin-polarised muons, having a high gyromagnetic ratio, make the muon spin rotation and relaxation ($$\mu ^+$$ μ + SR) technique ideal for probing ions dynamics in these types of energy materials. Here we present a study of the low-temperature magnetic properties as well as K$$^+$$ + dynamics in honeycomb layered oxide material $${\hbox {K}_2\hbox {Ni}_2\hbox {TeO}_6}$$ K 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 using mainly the $$\mu ^+$$ μ + SR technique. Our low-temperature $$\mu ^+$$ μ + SR results together with complementary magnetic susceptibility measurements find an antiferromagnetic transition at $$T_{\mathrm{N}}\approx 27$$ T N ≈ 27 K. Further $${\mu}^{+}$$ μ + SR studies performed at higher temperatures reveal that potassium ions (K$$^+$$ + ) become mobile above 200 K and the activation energy for the diffusion process is obtained as $$E_{\mathrm{a}}=121 (13)$$ E a = 121 ( 13 ) meV. This is the first time that K$$^+$$ + dynamics in potassium-based battery materials has been measured using $$\mu ^+$$ μ + SR. Assisted by high-resolution neutron diffraction, the temperature dependence of the K-ion self diffusion constant is also extracted. Finally our results also reveal that K-ion diffusion occurs predominantly at the surface of the powder particles. This opens future possibilities for potentially improving ion diffusion as well as K-ion battery device performance using nano-structuring and surface coatings of the particles.

The internal magnetic field in a sodium battery compound, i.e., the paramagnet ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.7}{\mathrm{CoO}}_{2}$, was investigated with negative muon spin rotation and relaxation (${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{SR}$), and the result was compared with the results previously obtained with ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}\mathrm{SR}$. The majority of implanted ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ is captured on an oxygen nucleus, while ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}$ locates an interstitial site. Therefore, a ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}\mathrm{SR}$ work provides information on the internal magnetic field, which is formed by nuclear magnetic moments of $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ and $^{59}\mathrm{Co}$, from the two different viewpoints. Besides a slight decrease in the field distribution width ($\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$) around 300 K, the nuclear magnetic field detected with ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{SR}$ was found to be almost static and temperature independent up to 400 K, even though Na ions are known to start to diffuse above 290 K based on ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}\mathrm{SR}$, Na-NMR, neutron scattering, and electrochemical measurements. Such a discrepancy is caused by the fact that the Na contribution to $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ is only about 3% at the O site whereas it is about 13% at the interstitial site, where the ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}$ is presumably located.

International audience; The structural and physical properties of the β polymorph of iron tungstate Fe2WO6 have been investigated by synchrotron and neutron diffraction vs temperature, combined with magnetization and dielectric properties measurements. The monoclinic P21/a crystal structure of β-Fe2WO6 has been determined and consists of an original network of zigzag chains of FeO6 and WO6 octahedra sharing trans and skew edges, connected through corners into a 3D structure. Magnetization measurements indicate an antiferromagnetic transition at TN = 264 K, which corresponds to a ↑↑↓↓ nearly collinear ordering of iron moments inside sequences of four edge-sharing FeO6 octahedra, as determined by neutron diffraction. A canting of the moments out of the ac plane is observed below 150 K, leading to a noncollinear antiferromagnetic structure, the P21/a′ magnetic space group remaining unchanged. These results are discussed in comparison with the crystal and magnetic structures of γ-Fe2WO6 and with the magnetic couplings in other iron tungstates and trirutile Fe2TeO6.

Detailed understanding of charge diffusion processes in a lithium-ion battery is crucial to enable its systematic improvement. Experimental investigation of diffusion at the interface between active particles and the electrolyte is challenging but warrants investigation as it can introduce resistances that, for example, limit the charge and discharge rates. Here, we show an approach to study diffusion at interfaces using muon spin spectroscopy. By performing measurements on LiFePO4 platelets with different sizes, we determine how diffusion through the LiFePO4 (010) interface differs from that in the center of the particle (i.e., bulk diffusion). We perform ab initio calculations to aid the understanding of the results and show the relevance of our interfacial diffusion measurement to electrochemical performance through cyclic voltammetry measurements. These results indicate that surface engineering can be used to improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries.

International audience; Inverse trirutile Mn2TeO6 was investigated using in situ neutron and X-ray powder diffraction between 700 °C and room temperature. When the temperature was decreased, a structural phase transition was observed around 400 °C, from a tetragonal (P42/mnm) to a monoclinic phase (P21/c), involving a doubling of the cell parameter along b. This complex monoclinic structure has been solved by combining electron, neutron, and synchrotron powder diffraction techniques at room temperature. It can be described as a distorted superstructure of the inverse trirutile structure, in which compressed and elongated MnO6 octahedra alternate with more regular TeO6 octahedra, forming a herringbone-like pattern. Rietveld refinements, carried out with symmetry-adapted modes, show that the structural transition, arguably of Jahn–Teller origin, is driven by a single primary mode.

International audience; The crystal and magnetic properties of honeycomb BiMnTeO6 have been studied between 1.5 and 300 K using synchrotron x-rays and neutron-scattering experiments. Commensurate magnetic ordering is observed below TN=10K, and corresponds to a noncollinear spin arrangement, with spins tilted away from the anisotropy easy-axis set by the Jahn-Teller distortion of the MnO6 octahedra. Inelastic-scattering experiments show two main nearly localized magnetic excitations, which can be well described by an exchange Hamiltonian involving weak Mn-Mn magnetic interactions and a crystal-field Hamiltonian characterizing the strong easy-axis anisotropy associated with the dz2 orbital ordering of Mn3+. The crystal-field levels can be accurately calculated, taking into account a transverse molecular field imposed by the magnetic ordering of the neighboring atoms below TN. This makes BiMnTeO6 an interesting example of a multiaxis Ising system in a self-imposed transverse magnetic field.

Structural and magnetic transitions in the distorted inverse trirutile $\mathrm{M}{\mathrm{n}}_{2}\mathrm{Te}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ have been studied between 1.5 and 300 K using magnetization, dielectric permittivity, and specific heat measurements combined with synchrotron x-ray- and neutron-diffraction techniques on polycrystalline samples. A first-order structural transition, strongly hysteretic, occurs progressively over a large temperature span and is characterized by a broad maximum peaking at 53 K in the specific heat data. This structural transition is followed by two antiferromagnetic transitions, to commensurate and incommensurate magnetic orders, at 48 and 26 K, respectively. This succession of structural and magnetic transitions is interpreted as originating from a delicate balance between Jahn-Teller distortion of $\mathrm{Mn}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ octahedra, rigid $\mathrm{Te}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ units, and their consequences on orbital and spin orderings.

Hence, advanced neutron scattering methods are applied to investigate a model system for organic electronics composed of the widely used conductive polymer blend poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) together with nanocellulose as flexible reinforcing template material. In particular, the impact of relative humidity (RH) on the nanostructure evolution is studied in detail. The implications are discussed from a device performance point of view and the changing nanostructure is correlated with macroscale physical properties such as conductivity. The first humidification (95% RH) leads to an irreversible decrease of conductivity. After the first humidification cycle, however, the conductivity can be reversibly regained when returning to low humidity values (5% RH), which is important for device manufacturing. Organophosphates (OPs) inhibit cholinesterase and hyperactivate the acetylcholinergic nervous system in the brain, causing motor disorders (e.g., tremor and seizures). Here, we performed behavioral and immunohistochemical studies in mice and rats to investigate the tremorgenic mechanism of paraoxon, an active metabolite of parathion. Treating animals with paraoxon (0.15–0.6 mg/kg, i.p.) elicited kinetic tremor in a dose-dependent manner. Expressional analysis of Fos protein, a biomarker of neural excitation, revealed that a tremorgenic dose of paraoxon (0.6 mg/kg) significantly and region-specifically elevated Fos expression in the cerebral cortex (e.g., sensory cortex), hippocampal CA1, globus pallidus, medial habenula, and inferior olive (IO) among 48 brain regions examined. A moderate increase in Fos expression was also observed in the dorsolateral striatum while the change was not statistically significant. Paraoxon-induced tremor was inhibited by the nicotinic acetylcholine (nACh) receptor antagonist mecamylamine (MEC), but not affected by the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist trihexyphenidyl (THP). In addition, paraoxon-induced Fos expression in the IO was also antagonized by MEC, but not by THP, and lesioning of the IO markedly suppressed tremorgenic action of paraoxon. The present results suggest that OPs elicit kinetic tremor at least partly by activating IO neurons via nACh receptors.

Inverse trirutile Mn

We previously demonstrated that nicotine elicited kinetic tremor by elevating the neural activity of the inferior olive via α7 nicotinic acetylcholine (nACh) receptors. Since α7 nACh receptors reportedly facilitate synaptic monoamine release, we explored the role of 5-HT receptors in induction and/or modulation of nicotine tremor. Treatment of mice with nicotine induced kinetic tremor that normally appeared during movement. The 5-HT1A agonist, 8-hydroxydipropylaminotetraline (8-OH-DPAT), significantly enhanced nicotine-induced tremor and the action of 8-OH-DPAT was antagonized by WAY-100135 (5-HT1A antagonist). In addition, the cerebral 5-HT depletion by repeated treatment with p-chlorophenylalanine did not reduce, but rather potentiated the facilitatory effects of 8-OH-DPAT. In contrast, the 5-HT2 agonist, 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI), significantly attenuated nicotine tremor, which was antagonized by ritanserin (5-HT2 antagonist). The 5-HT3 agonist SR-57227 did not affect nicotine-induced tremor. Furthermore, when testing the direct actions of 5-HT antagonists, nicotine tremor was inhibited by WAY-100135, but was unaffected by ritanserin, ondansetron (5-HT3 antagonist) or SB-258585 (5-HT6 antagonist). These results suggest that postsynaptic 5-HT1A receptors are involved in induction of nicotine tremor mediated by α7 nACh receptors. In addition, 5-HT2 receptors have an inhibitory modulatory role in induction of nicotine tremor.

The relationship between the optical phonon parameters and the oxygen ion conductivities were investigated for AlYb co-doped zirconia ceramics. Intrinsic intragrain ion conductivity, σdc, decreased with increasing Al loading into ytterbia-stabilized zirconia, while the damping parameter of the lattice vibration, γ1TO, increased. This phenomenon agreed with findings of our previous study, which revealed a relationship between the σdc and the γ1TO for zirconia-based ion conductors.

Canine medial patellar luxation (MPL) is a very common orthopedic disease in small animals. Because the pathophysiology of this disease involves various pathways, the surgical techniques and results vary according to the veterinarian. Further, the landmark for block recession is not completely clear. We retrospectively evaluated 75 dogs (107 limbs) with MPL in whom our landmark for block recession was used from July 2008 to May 2013. Information regarding the breed, age, sex, body weight, body condition score (BCS), lateral vs bilateral, pre-operative grading, surgical techniques, removal of implants, concomitance with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, re-luxation, re-operation, and rehabilitation was obtained from the medical records. The breeds were as follows: Chihuahua (n=23), Pomeranian (n=12), Yorkshire Terrier (n=9), and so on. The study group consisted of 33 males (castrated n=13) and 42 females (spayed n=21). The median age was 53.3±35.9 months (32-146 months); 13 cases were less than 12 months of age (17.3%). The pre-surgical BCSs were as follows: 1 (n=0), 2 (n=20), 3 (n=24), 4 (n=24) and 5 (n=7). The body weight was 4.51±3.48 kg (1.34-23.0 kg); 71 cases (94.7%) were less than 10 kg. The MPL grades (each limb) were G1 (n=1), G2 (n=18), G3 (n=78), and G4 (n=10); 32 cases were bilateral and 43 cases were unilateral (right n=27; left n=16). The specific surgical procedure (distal femoral osteotomy) was 3 stifles in Chihuahuas. Concurrent with ACL rupture was 16/107 stifles (15.0%) corrected with the over-the-top method or the extracapsular method in Papillons (5/6), Chihuahuas (5/23), and so on. The occurrences of re-luxation and re-operation were 3 out of 107 stifles (2.8%) and 0%, respectively. In this retrospective study, we present a potentially good surgical landmark for block recession of MPL in dogs.

It has been known since many years that there are histamine receptors (H) in the heart. Histamines display chronotropic and inotropic activity, cardiovascular diseases, and are thought to be a systemic inflammatory disease. During heart failure, the histamine concentration is elevated. In addition, H2 blockers prolonged the survival period for human patients with heart failure. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether blood concentration of histamine is associated with canine valvular disease (CVD). The histamine concentrations of dogs with CVD are significantly higher than those of healthy dogs. The histamine concentration gradually increases during CVD and is highly correlated with the grade of heart murmur. In conclusion, the histamine concentration was higher in the population of dogs with CVD compared with the healthy controls. Although the etiopathogenesis of CVD is complex and incompletely understood, it likely involves histamine. Ultimately additional studies are required to determine whether histamine blockers might be useful for the management of dogs with cardiac valvular disease.

Feline hyperthyroidism (HT) is a common endocrine disorder worldwide, but clinical and laboratory features might vary geographically. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate feline HT in Japan, and compare results to those of previous study for feline HT. We evaluated 48 feline HT cases clinical and laboratory features. Surprisingly, the youngest patient was 32 months of age (2 year 9 months). There was no significant difference among the study subjects in sex, but frequency of spayed/castrated cats was high (85.4%). Median age was 186 months (32-272 months). 91.3% (n=42) of subjects were over 10 years of age, and 8.7% (n=4) were under 10 years of age. Clinical symptoms included vomiting, 56.3% (n=27); diarrhea, 2.1% (n=1); hyperactivity, 12.5% (n=6); emaciation, 41.7% (n=20); polyuria and polydipsia, 22.9% (n=11); chronic weight loss, 60.4% (n=29); and palpated enlarged thyroid, 2.1% (n=1). Concurrent findings included chronic kidney disease, 20.8% (n=10); congestive heart failure, 20.8% (n=10); tachycardia (over 240 beats/min), 18.8% (n=9); gallop rhythm, 31.3% (n=15); neurological disorders such as hind-limb paralysis, 14.6% (n=7); cystitis, 8.7% (n=4); gingivitis, 4.2% (n=2); diabetes mellitus, 4.2% (n=2); and arterial thromboembolism, 6.3% (n=3). In addition, laboratory features (complete blood counts and biochemistry) differed from those of previous reports in certain respects. Our results show that it might be important for practitioners to comprehend epidemiologic differences regarding feline HT worldwide.

The magnetism of double perovskites is a complex phenomenon, determined from intra- or interatomic magnetic moment interactions, and strongly influenced by geometry. We take advantage of the complementary length and timescales of the muon spin rotation, relaxation, and resonance (mu+SR) microscopic technique and bulk ac/dc magnetic susceptibility measurements to study the magnetic phases of the LaCaNiReO6 double perovskite. As a result, we are able to discern and report ferrimagnetic ordering below TC = 102 K and the formation of different magnetic domains above TC. Between TC < T < 270 K, the following two magnetic environments appear, a dense spin region and a static-dilute spin region. The paramagnetic state is obtained only above T > 270 K. An evolution of the interaction between Ni and Re magnetic sublattices, in this geometrically frustrated fcc perovskite structure, is revealed as a function of temperature through the critical behavior and thermal evolution of microscopic and macroscopic physical quantities.
