Dalteparin/protamine nanoparticles (D/P NPs) can effectively carry growth factors (GFs) such as fibroblast GF (FGF)-2. The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of FGF-2-containing D/P NPs (FGF-2&D/P NPs) on hair growth.Patients and methods: In this study, the participants were 12 volunteers with thin hair. One milliliter of FGF-2 (100 ng/mL) and D/P NPs (56 μg/mL) was applied and massaged on the skin of the scalp by the participants twice a day. They were evaluated for 6 months. Participants were photographed using a digital camera for general observation and a hair diagnosis system for measuring hair diameter.Results: The mean diameter of the hairs was significantly higher following the application of FGF-2&D/P NPs for 6 months. Objective improvements in thin hair were observed in two cases. Nine participants experienced greater bounce and hair resilience.Conclusion: The transdermal application of FGF-2&D/P NPs to the scalp can be used as a new treatment for alopecia. Abstract

A dc bias in a piezoelectric semiconductor may drive a beam of electrons which could charge the neutralized colloids of implanted ions and cause a uniform drift of charged colloidal particles. Using a test particle approach and appropriate dielectric-response function for an n-type piezoelectric semiconductor plasma, the potential distribution of uniformly drifting colloidal ions has been investigated. The dynamical oscillatory wake potential, besides the usual static Coulombian Debye–Hückel potential, is found to be contributing more dominantly due to the plasma effect, rather than due to electron–phonon coupling interactions. This periodic wakefield may cause a long-range ordered structure of charged colloidal particles within the semiconductor to exhibit various additional properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a case study of a three-month-old girl patient who started to suffer target-like erythematous lesions and diagnosed with deficiency of adenosine deaminase type 2 (DADA2). The paedritic patient was presented with as recurrent fever and erythema with no evidence of systemic vasculopathy.

Abstract

The evaluation of energy expenditure is of great importance, not only during health promotion, but also during recovery from disease. The measurement of oxygen uptake is the most reliable method for measuring energy expenditure, but, for estimating resting metabolism, there is still a need for sophisticated equipment. We have developed and evaluated a simple calorimeter and compared it with the flow-through (Canopy) system. A respiratory simulator was used to evaluate oxygen uptake at different flow rates. A known concentration of mixed gases flows into the system via the respiratory simulator and the oxygen concentrations and flow rates were compared. The results indicate that large errors in the measurement of oxygen uptake occurred at low flow rates, but these errors were about 5% under estimated values in the simple calorimeter. The measurement error at low flow rates is about 10% in the Canopy system. From these results, we concluded that the simple calorimeter can be used to measure oxygen uptake under resting conditions; however, the Canopy system would be unsuitable for measurement in a subject with small ventilation, such as an elderly patient. Abstract

This paper proposes a tele-instruction system for ultrasound probe operation, based on shared Augmented Reality (AR) technology. Telemedicine, a strategy to diminish geographic gaps in the quality of medical service, is fashionable. However, existing medical-data transmission systems cannot convey the skills of physicians, so they cannot eliminate the problem of geographic gaps. This research developed a telemedicine system that transports physicians' skills over a shared AR space. The shared AR technology provides an environment where users can exchange spatial information, and facilitates smooth communication. This research concentrates on interfaces for physicians and technicians at the patient site. The proposed system provides intuitive and unrestricted interfaces for the physician and technician, using a data projector and an LCD tablet. At the patient site, instructions for the technician are projected directly onto the patient's body, using a data projector. The physician site allows the physician to send instructions on probe operation using an LCD tablet. This information is displayed as a "web-mark", which provides spatial information for ultrasound probe operation. Furthermore, the system sends environmental information about the patient to the physician, such as the technician's behavior and patient's posture, via an immersive display. The proposed system was tested with a physician using real tele- diagnosis.
