Abstract: Big Data is considered proprietary asset of companies, organizations, and even nations. Turning big data into real treasure requires the support of big data systems. A variety of commercial and open source products have been unleashed for big data storage and processing. While big data users are facing the choice of which system best suits their needs, big data system developers are facing the question of how to evaluate their systems with regard to general big data processing needs. System benchmarking is the classic way of meeting the above demands. However, existent big data benchmarks either fail to represent the variety of big data processing requirements, or target only one specific platform, e.g. Hadoop. In this paper, with our industrial partners, we present BigOP, an end-to-end system benchmarking framework, featuring the abstraction of representative Operation sets, workload Patterns, and prescribed tests. BigOP is part of an open-source big data benchmarking project, BigDataBench. BigOP's abstraction model not only guides the development of BigDataBench, but also enables automatic generation of tests with comprehensive workloads. We illustrate the feasibility of BigOP by implementing an automatic test generation tool and benchmarking against three widely used big data processing systems, i.e. Hadoop, Spark and MySQL Cluster. Three tests targeting three different application scenarios are prescribed. The tests involve relational data, text data and graph data, as well as all operations and workload patterns. 28. Energy cost, the key challenge of today's data centers

Abstract: Historically, performance and price-performance of computer systems have been the key purchasing arguments for customers. With rising energy costs and increasing power use due to the ever-growing demand for computing power (servers, storage, networks), electricity bills have become a significant expense for today's data centers. In the very near future, energy efficiency is expected to be one of the key purchasing arguments. Some performance organizations, such as SPEC, have developed power benchmarks for single servers (SPECpower_ssj2008), but so far, no benchmark exists that measures the power consumption of transaction processing systems. In this paper, we develop a power consumption model based on data readily available in the TPC-C full disclosure report of published benchmarks. We verify our model with measurements taken from three fully scaled and optimized TPC-C configurations including client (middle-tier) systems, database server, and storage subsystem. By applying this model to a subset of 7 years of TPC-C results, we identify the most power-intensive components and demonstrate the existing power consumption trends over time. Assuming similar trends in the future, the hardware enhancements alone will not be able to satisfy the demand for energy efficiency. In its outlook, this paper looks at potential hardware and software enhancements to meet the energy efficiency demands of future systems. Realizing the importance of energy efficiency, the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) has formed a working group to look into adding energy efficiency metrics to all its benchmarks. This paper is expected to complement this initiative.

Abstract: The meaning of the term 'Big Data' is still subject to debate, in spite of being widely used in biomedical publications. This confusion in definition leads to missed opportunities for peers to exchange knowledge and practices. A better understanding of Big Data may help researchers to identify themselves with the Big Data community. In this study, we investigate the most distinguishing features in 'Big Data'-labelled publications by comparing them against publication without this label (non-Big Data), using text mining and machine learning methods. Furthermore, the usage of the term Big Data was analysed over time. Our models could successfully make a distinction between publications labelled with 'Big Data' and those without. The most distinguishing features consisted of terms such as 'omics', 'computing', 'storage', and 'mining'. We observed that publications that do not use the term Big Data may also address topics that fall under well-accepted definitions of Big Data. Trends suggest that, while the use of the term Big Data increased, it is used less reliably now as compared to earlier years.
