Performance of the group IV monochalcogenide GeSe in solar cells, electronic, and optoelectronic devices is expected to improve when high-quality single crystalline material is used rather than polycrystalline films. Crystalline flakes represent an attractive alternative to bulk single crystals as their synthesis may be developed to be scalable, faster, and with higher overall yield. However, large - and especially large and thin - single crystal flakes are notoriously hard to synthesize. Here it is demonstrated that vapor-liquid-solid growth combined with direct lateral vapor-solid incorporation produces high-quality single crystalline GeSe ribbons with tens of micrometers size and controllable thickness. Electron microscopy shows that the ribbons exhibit perfect equilibrium (AB) van der Waals stacking order without extended defects across the entire thickness, in contrast to the conventional case of substrate-supported flakes where material is added via layer-by-layer nucleation and growth on the basal plane. Electrical measurements show anisotropic transport and a high Hall mobility of 85 cm 2  V -1  s -1 , on par with the best single crystals to date. Growth from mixed GeSe and SnSe vapors, finally, yields ribbons with unchanged structure and composition but with jagged edges, promising for applications that rely on ample chemically active edge sites, such as catalysis or photocatalysis., (© 2024 The Author(s). Formamidinium lead iodide (FAPI) has gained attention for hybrid perovskite solar cell (PSC) applications due to its enhanced stability and narrow bandgap. However, a significant challenge remains in inducing and stabilizing the elusive perovskite "black phase"─photoactive cubic α-FAPI─as the relatively bulky FA + cations tend to favor the thermodynamically stable nonphotoactive "yellow phase". In this study, we present a templated growth strategy employing thiol-functionalized MoS 2 nanosheets as templates. By introduction of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-functionalized MoS 2 as a growth template, precise control over crystal formation was achieved, favoring the growth of high-quality α-FAPI films. These advanced templated films exhibited substantial improvements in charge transport properties, efficient light absorption, and enhanced charge extraction. As a result, the PSCs achieved a significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to the nontemplated control device, increasing from 20.6 to 22.5%. The MoS 2 -incorporated device also demonstrated excellent shelf stability, maintaining 91% of the initial PCE even after 1600 h of storage without device encapsulation.

The growth of the information era economy is driving the pursuit of advanced materials for microelectronics, spurred by exploration into "Beyond CMOS" and "More than Moore" paradigms. Atomically thin 2D materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), show great potential for next-generation microelectronics due to their properties and defect engineering capabilities. This perspective delves into atomic precision processing (APP) techniques like atomic layer deposition (ALD), epitaxy, atomic layer etching (ALE), and atomic precision advanced manufacturing (APAM) for the fabrication and modification of 2D materials, essential for future semiconductor devices. Additive APP methods like ALD and epitaxy provide precise control over composition, crystallinity, and thickness at the atomic scale, facilitating high-performance device integration. Subtractive APP techniques, such as ALE, focus on atomic-scale etching control for 2D material functionality and manufacturing. In APAM, modification techniques aim at atomic-scale defect control, offering tailored device functions and improved performance. Achieving optimal performance and energy efficiency in 2D material-based microelectronics requires a comprehensive approach encompassing fundamental understanding, process modeling, and high-throughput metrology. The outlook for APP in 2D materials is promising, with ongoing developments poised to impact manufacturing and fundamental materials science. Integration with advanced metrology and codesign frameworks will accelerate the realization of next-generation microelectronics enabled by 2D materials.

Hierarchically porous materials containing sub-nm ultramicropores with molecular sieving abilities and microcavities with high gas diffusivity may realize energy-efficient membranes for gas separations. However, rationally designing and constructing such pores into large-area membranes enabling efficient H 2 separations remains challenging. Here, we report the synthesis and utilization of hybrid carbon molecular sieve membranes with well-controlled nano- and micro-pores and single zinc atoms and clusters well-dispersed inside the nanopores via the carbonization of supramolecular mixed matrix materials containing amorphous and crystalline zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. Carbonization temperature is used to fine-tune pore sizes, achieving ultrahigh selectivity for H 2 /CO 2 (130), H 2 /CH 4 (2900), H 2 /N 2 (880), and H 2 /C 2 H 6 (7900) with stability against water vapor and physical aging during a continuous 120-h test., (© 2024. Investigation on long-term effects of robot-assisted poststroke rehabilitation is challenging because of the difficulties in administration and follow-up of individuals throughout the process. A mobile hybrid neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)-robot, i.e., exoneuromusculoskeleton (ENSM) was adopted for a single-group trial to investigate the long-term effects of the robot-assisted self-help telerehabilitation on upper limb motor function after stroke. Twenty-two patients with chronic stroke were recruited to attend a 20-session telerehabilitation program assisted by the wrist/hand module of the ENMS (WH-ENMS). Participants were evaluated before, after, as well as at 3 months and 6 months after the training. The primary outcome measure was the Fugl-Meyer Assessment-Upper Extremity (FMA-UE), supplemented by secondary outcome measures of the FMA-UE of the shoulder and elbow (FMA shoulder/elbow), the FMA-UE of the wrist and hand (FMA wrist/hand), the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), the Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT), the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), as well as electromyography (EMG) and kinematic measurements. Twenty participants completed the telerehabilitation program, with 19 returning for a 3-month follow-up, and 18 for a 6-month follow-up. Significantly improved clinical scores were observed after the training ( p  ≤ 0.05). These improvements were maintained after 6 months in the FMA-UE, FMA shoulder/elbow, MAS at the wrist flexor, WMFT score, WMFT time, and FIM ( p  ≤ 0.05). The maintained improvements in motor function were attributed to reduced muscular compensation, as indicated by EMG and kinematic parameters. Controlling the three-dimensional (3D) nanoarchitecture of inorganic materials is imperative for enabling their novel mechanical, optical, and electronic properties. Here, by exploiting DNA-programmable assembly, we establish a general approach for realizing designed 3D ordered inorganic frameworks. Through inorganic templating of DNA frameworks by liquid- and vapor-phase infiltrations, we demonstrate successful nanofabrication of diverse classes of inorganic frameworks from metal, metal oxide and semiconductor materials, as well as their combinations, including zinc, aluminum, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, indium, tin, and platinum, and composites such as aluminum-doped zinc oxide, indium tin oxide, and platinum/aluminum-doped zinc oxide. The open 3D frameworks have features on the order of nanometers with architecture prescribed by the DNA frames and self-assembled lattice. Structural and spectroscopic studies reveal the composition and organization of diverse inorganic frameworks, as well as the optoelectronic properties of selected materials. The work paves the road toward establishing a 3D nanoscale lithography.

Rehabilitation robots are helpful in poststroke telerehabilitation; however, their feasibility and rehabilitation effectiveness in clinical settings have not been sufficiently investigated. A non-randomized controlled trial was conducted to investigate the feasibility of translating a telerehabilitation program assisted by a mobile wrist/hand exoneuromusculoskeleton (WH-ENMS) into routine clinical services and to compare the rehabilitative effects achieved in the hospital-service-based group ( n = 12, clinic group) with the laboratory-research-based group ( n = 12, lab group). Both groups showed significant improvements ( p ≤ 0.05) in clinical assessments of behavioral motor functions and in muscular coordination and kinematic evaluations after the training and at the 3-month follow-up, with the lab group demonstrating better motor gains than the clinic group ( p ≤ 0.05). The results indicated that the WH-ENMS-assisted tele-program was feasible and effective for upper limb rehabilitation when integrated into routine practice, and the quality of patient-operator interactions physically and remotely affected the rehabilitative outcomes.

In this study, a simple yet versatile method is proposed for identifying the number of exfoliated graphene layers transferred on an oxide substrate from optical images, utilizing a limited number of input images for training, paired with a more traditional number of a few thousand well-published Github images for testing and predicting. Two thresholding approaches, namely the standard deviation-based approach and the linear regression-based approach, were employed in this study. The method specifically leverages the red, green, and blue color channels of image pixels and creates a correlation between the green channel of the background and the green channel of the various layers of graphene. This method proves to be a feasible alternative to deep learning-based graphene recognition and traditional microscopic analysis. The proposed methodology performs well under conditions where the effect of surrounding light on the graphene-on-oxide sample is minimum and allows rapid identification of the various graphene layers. The study additionally addresses the functionality of the proposed methodology with nonhomogeneous lighting conditions, showcasing successful prediction of graphene layers from images that are lower in quality compared to typically published in literature. Thin-film composite membranes are a leading technology for post-combustion carbon capture, and the key challenge is to fabricate defect-free selective nanofilms as thin as possible (100 nm or below) with superior CO 2 /N 2 separation performance. Herein, we developed high-performance membranes based on an unusual choice of semi-crystalline blends of amorphous poly(ethylene oxide) ( a PEO) and 18-crown-6 (C6) using two nanoengineering strategies. First, the crystallinity of the nanofilms decreases with decreasing thickness and completely disappears at 500 nm or below because of the thickness confinement. Second, polydimethylsiloxane is chosen as the gutter layer between the porous support and selective layer, and its surface is modified with bio-adhesive polydopamine (<10 nm) with an affinity toward a PEO, enabling the formation of the thin, defect-free, amorphous a PEO/C6 layer. For example, a 110 nm film containing 40 mass % C6 in a PEO exhibits CO 2 permeability of 900 Barrer (much higher than a thick film with 420 Barrer), rendering a membrane with a CO 2 permeance of 2200 GPU and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 27 at 35 °C, surpassing Robeson's upper bound. This work shows that engineering at the nanoscale plays an important role in designing high-performance membranes for practical separations.

Despite much technical progress achieved so far, the exact surface and shape evolution during wet chemical etching is less unraveled, especially in ionically bonded ceramics. Herein, by using in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy, a repeated two-stage anisotropic and pulsating periodic etching dynamic is discovered during the pencil shape evolution of a single crystal ZnO nanorod in aqueous hydrochloric acid. Specifically, the nanopencil tip shrinks at a slower rate along [0001̅] than that along the ⟨101̅0⟩ directions, resulting in a sharper ZnO pencil tip. Afterward, rapid tip dissolution happens due to accelerated etching rates along various crystal directions. Concurrently, the vicinal base region of the original nanopencil tip emerges as a new tip followed by the repeated sequence of tip shrinking and removal. The high-index surfaces, such as {101̅ m } ( m = 0, 1, 2, or 3) and {21̅ 1̅ n } ( n = 0, 1, 2, or 3), are found to preferentially expose in different ratios. Our 3D electron tomography, convergent beam electron diffraction, middle-angle bright-field STEM, and XPS results indicate the dissociative Cl - species were bound to the Zn-terminated tip surfaces. Furthermore, DFT calculation suggests the preferential Cl - passivation over the {101̅1} and (0001) surfaces of lower energy than others, leading to preferential surface exposures and the oscillatory variation of different facet etching rates. The boosted reactivity due to high-index nanoscale surface exposures is confirmed by comparatively enhanced chemical sensing and CO 2 hydrogenation activity. These findings provide an in-depth understanding of anisotropic wet chemical etching of ionic nanocrystals and offer a design strategy for advanced functional materials.

Nanoparticles (NPs) at high loadings are often used in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) to improve gas separation properties, but they can lead to defects and poor processability that impede membrane fabrication. Herein, it is demonstrated that branched nanorods (NRs) with controlled aspect ratios can significantly reduce the required loading to achieve superior gas separation properties while maintaining excellent processability, as demonstrated by the dispersion of palladium (Pd) NRs in polybenzimidazole for H 2 /CO 2 separation. Increasing the aspect ratio from 1 for NPs to 40 for NRs decreases the percolation threshold volume fraction by a factor of 30, from 0.35 to 0.011. An MMM with percolated networks formed by Pd NRs at a volume fraction of 0.039 exhibits H 2 permeability of 110 Barrer and H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 31 when challenged with simulated syngas at 200 °C, surpassing Robeson's upper bound. This work highlights the advantage of NRs over NPs and nanowires and shows that right-sizing nanofillers in MMMs is critical to construct highly sieving pathways at minimal loadings. Solar sailing enables efficient propellant-free attitude adjustment and orbital maneuvers of solar sail spacecraft with high area-to-mass ratios. However, the heavy supporting mass for large solar sails inevitably leads to low area-to-mass ratios. Inspired by chip-scale satellites, a chip-scale solar sail system named ChipSail, consisting of microrobotic solar sails and a chip-scale satellite, was proposed in this work. The structural design and reconfigurable mechanisms of an electrothermally driven microrobotic solar sail made of Al\Ni 50 Ti 50 bilayer beams were introduced, and the theoretical model of its electro-thermo-mechanical behaviors was established. The analytical solutions to the out-of-plane deformation of the solar sail structure appeared to be in good agreement with the finite element analysis (FEA) results. A representative prototype of such solar sail structures was fabricated on silicon wafers using surface and bulk microfabrication, followed by an in-situ experiment of its reconfigurable property under controlled electrothermal actuation. The experimental results demonstrated significant electro-thermo-mechanical deformation of such microrobotic bilayer solar sails, showing great potential in the development of the ChipSail system. Analytical solutions to the electro-thermo-mechanical model, as well as the fabrication process and characterization techniques, provided a rapid performance evaluation and optimization of such microrobotic bilayer solar sails for the ChipSail.

Blends of block copolymers can form phases and exhibit features distinct from the constituent materials. We study thin film blends of cylinder-forming and lamellar-forming block copolymers across a range of substrate surface energies. Blend materials are responsive to interfacial energy, allowing selection of pure or coexisting phases based on surface chemistry. Blending stabilizes certain motifs that are typically metastable, and can be used to generate pure hexagonally perforated lamellar thin films across a range of film thicknesses and surface energies. This tolerant behavior is ascribed to the ability of blend materials to redistribute chains to stabilize otherwise high-energy defect structures. The blend responsiveness allows the morphology to be spatially defined through multi-tone chemical surface patterns.

Controlling crystallization and grain growth is crucial for realizing highly efficient hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, enhanced PSC photovoltaic performance and stability by accelerating perovskite crystallization and grain growth via 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanosheet additives incorporated into the active perovskite layer are demonstrated. In situ X-ray scattering and infrared thermal imaging during the perovskite annealing process revealed the highly thermally conductive hBN nanosheets promoted the phase conversion and grain growth in the perovskite layer by facilitating a more rapid and spatially uniform temperature rise within the perovskite film. Complementary structural, physicochemical, and electrical characterizations further showed that the hBN nanosheets formed a physical barrier at the perovskite grain boundaries and the interfaces with charge transport layers, passivating defects, and retarding ion migration. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the PSC is improved from 17.4% to 19.8%, along with enhanced device stability, retaining ≈90% of the initial efficiency even after 500 h ambient air storage. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have become one of the state-of-the-art photovoltaic technologies due to their facile solution-based fabrication processes combined with extremely high photovoltaic performance originating from excellent optoelectronic properties such as strong light absorption, high charge mobility, long free charge carrier diffusion length, and tunable direct bandgap. However, the poor intrinsic stability of hybrid perovskites under environmental stresses including light, heat, and moisture, which is often associated with high defect density in the perovskite, has limited the large-scale commercialization and deployment of PSCs. The use of process additives, which can be included in various subcomponent layers in the PSC, has been identified as one of the effective approaches that can address these issues and improve the photovoltaic performance. Among various additives that have been explored, two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged recently due to their unique structures and properties that can enhance the photovoltaic performance and device stability by improving perovskite crystallization, defect passivation, and charge transport. Here, we provide a review of the recent progresses in 2D material additives for improving the PSC performance based on key representative 2D material systems, including graphene and its derivatives, transitional metal dichalcogenides, and black phosphorous, providing a useful guideline for further exploiting unique nanomaterial additives for more efficient and stable PSCs in the near future., (© 2023 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Block copolymers spontaneously self-assemble into well-defined nanoscale morphologies. Yet equilibrium assembly gives rise to a limited set of structures. Non-equilibrium strategies can, in principle, expand diversity by exploiting self-assembly's responsive nature. In this vein, we developed a pathway priming strategy combining control of thin film initial configurations and ordering history. We sequentially coat distinct materials to form prescribed initial states, and use thermal annealing to evolve these manifestly non-equilibrium states through the assembly landscape, traversing normally inaccessible transient structures. We explore the enormous associated hyperspace, spanning processing (annealing temperature and time), material (composition and molecular weight), and layering (thickness and order) dimensions. We demonstrate a library of exotic non-native morphologies, including vertically-oriented perforated lamellae, aqueduct structures (vertical lamellar walls with substrate-pinned perforations), parapets (crenellated lamellae), and networks of crisscrossing lamellae. In 2017, we reported a dye-sensitized, photoelectrolysis cell consisting of fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)-coated glass covered by SnO 2 nanoparticles coated with N , N '-bis(phosphonomethyl)-3,4,9,10-perylenediimide (PMPDI) dye and then a photoelectrochemically deposited CoO x water oxidation catalyst (WOCatalyst), FTO/nano-SnO 2 /PMPDI/CoO x . This system employed nanostructured SnO 2 stabilized by a polyethyleneglycol bisphenol A epichlorohydrin (PEG-BAE) copolymer and other C-containing additives based on a literature synthesis to achieve a higher surface area and thus greater PMPDI dye absorption and resultant light collection. Surprisingly, the addition of the well-established WOCatalyst CoO x resulted in a decrease in the photocurrent, an unexpected "anti-catalyst" effect . Two primary questions addressed in the present study are (1) what is the source of this "anti-catalyst" effect? and (2) are the findings of broader interest? Reflection on the synthesis of nano-SnO 2 stabilized by PEG-BAE, and the large, ca. 10:1 ratio of C to Sn in synthesis, led to the hypothesis that even the annealing step at 450 °C in of the FTO/SnO 2 anode precursors was unlikely to remove all the carbon initially present. Indeed, residual carbon impurities are shown to be the culprit in the presently observed "anti-catalyst" effect. The implication and anticipated broader impact of the results of answering the two abovementioned questions are also presented and discussed along with a section entitled "Perspective and Suggestions for the Field Going Forward."

Mixed matrix materials (MMMs) hold great potential for membrane gas separations by merging nanofillers with unique nanostructures and polymers with excellent processability. In situ growth of the nanofillers is adapted to mitigate interfacial incompatibility to avoid the selectivity loss. Surprisingly, functional polymers have not been exploited to co-grow the nanofillers for membrane applications. Herein, in situ synergistic growth of crystalline zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) in polybenzimidazole (PBI), creating highly porous structures with high gas permeability, is demonstrated. More importantly, PBI contains benzimidazole groups (similar to the precursor for ZIF-8, i.e., 2-methylimidazole) and induces the formation of amorphous ZIFs, enhancing interfacial compatibility and creating highly size-discriminating bottlenecks. For instance, the formation of 15 mass% ZIF-8 in PBI improves H 2 permeability and H 2 /CO 2 selectivity by ≈100% at 35 °C, breaking the permeability/selectivity tradeoff. Rapid, yet accurate and sensitive testing has been shown to be critical in the control of spreading pandemic diseases such as COVID-19. Current methods which are highly sensitive and can differentiate different strains are slow and cannot be conveniently applied at the point of care. Rapid tests, meanwhile, require a high titer and are not sufficiently sensitive to discriminate between strains. Here, we report a rapid and facile potentiometric detection method based on nanoscale, three-dimensional molecular imprints of analytes on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), which can deliver analyte-specific detection of both whole virions and isolated proteins in microliter amounts of bodily fluids within minutes. The detection substrate with nanoscale inverse surface patterns of analytes formed by a SAM identifies a target analyte by recognizing its surface nano- and molecular structures, which can be monitored by temporal measurement of the change in substrate open-circuit potential. The sensor unambiguously detected and differentiated H1N1 and H3N2 influenza A virions as well as the spike proteins of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Middle-East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus in human saliva with limits of detection reaching 200 PFU/mL and 100 pg/mL for the viral particles and spike proteins, respectively. The demonstrated speed and specificity of detection, combined with a low required sample volume, high sensitivity, ease of potentiometric measurement, and simple sample collection and preparation, suggest that the technique can be used as a highly effective point-of-care diagnostic platform for a fast, accurate, and specific detection of various viral pathogens and their variants., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2022 American Chemical Society.)

The combination of block copolymer (BCP) thin film self-assembly and selective infiltration synthesis of inorganic materials into one BCP block provides access to various organic-inorganic hybrids. Here, we apply sequential infiltration synthesis, a vapor-phase hybridization technique, to selectively introduce ZnO into the organic microdomains of silicon-containing rod-coil diblock copolymers and a triblock terpolymer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)- b -poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)-oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PDMS- b -PMPCS) and PDMS- b -polystyrene- b -PMPCS (PDMS- b -PS- b -PMPCS), in which the PMPCS rod block is a liquid crystalline polymer. The in-plane cylindrical PDMS- b -PMPCS and core-shell cylindrical and hexagonally perforated lamellar PDMS- b -PS- b -PMPCS films were infiltrated with ZnO with high selectivity to the PMPCS. The etching contrast between PDMS, PS and the ZnO-infused PMPCS enables the fabrication of ZnO/SiO x binary composites by plasma etching and reveals the core-shell morphology of the triblock terpolymer.

A combination of fused deposition modeling printing with atomic layer deposition (ALD) of titania was designed to achieve templated biomineralization and terminal odontogenic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells on three-dimensional (3D) printed polylactic acid (PLA) scaffolds. In the absence of the ALD-deposited titania coating, we had previously shown that both plating efficiency and differentiation are adversely impacted when scaffolds are produced by 3D printing rather than traditional polymer molding. These differences were removed when both printed and molded structures were coated with ALD of titania, which improved the outcomes regardless of the manufacturing method. In this case, on all titania-coated substrates, the plating efficiency increased, copious mineral deposition was observed, and RT-PCR indicated a significant upregulation of osteocalcin, a gene associated with mineral deposition. The influence of additional coatings of collagen, gelatin, or fibronectin on the ALD titania-coated and uncoated PLA-printed and molded scaffolds was also investigated. Upregulation of the odontogenic late-stage differentiation sibling protein, dentin sialoprotein, was observed on the collagen ALD-titania-coated scaffolds and to a lesser extent on the gelatin ALD-titania-coated scaffolds.

We present experimental evidence of electronic and optical interlayer resonances in graphene van der Waals heterostructure interfaces. Using the spectroscopic mode of a low-energy electron microscope (LEEM), we characterized these interlayer resonant states up to 10 eV above the vacuum level. Compared with nontwisted, AB-stacked bilayer graphene (AB BLG), an ≈0.2  Å increase was found in the interlayer spacing of 30° twisted bilayer graphene (30°-tBLG). In addition, we used Raman spectroscopy to probe the inelastic light-matter interactions. A unique type of Fano resonance was found around the D and G modes of the graphene lattice vibrations. This anomalous, robust Fano resonance is a direct result of quantum confinement and the interplay between discrete phonon states and the excitonic continuum.

Energy transfer (ET) from nanocrystals (NCs) has shown potential to enhance the optoelectronic performance of ultrathin semiconductor devices such as ultrathin Si solar cells, but the experimental identification of optimal device geometries for maximizing the performance enhancement is highly challenging due to a large parameter space. Here, we have demonstrated a general theoretical framework combining transfer matrix method (TMM) simulations and energy transfer (ET) calculations to reveal critical device design guidelines for developing an efficient, NC-based ET sensitization of ultrathin Si solar cells, which are otherwise infeasible to identify experimentally. The results uncover that the ET-driven NC sensitization is highly effective in enhancing the short circuit current ( J SC ) in sub-100 nm-thick Si layers, where, for example, the ET contribution can account for over 60% of the maximum achievable J SC in 10 nm-thick ultrathin Si. The study also reveals the limitation of the ET approach, which becomes ineffective for Si active layers thicker than 5 μm, being dominated by conventional optical coupling. The demonstrated simulation approach not only enables the development of efficient ultrathin Si solar cells but also should be applicable to precisely assessing and analyzing diverse experimental device geometries and configurations for developing new efficient ET-based ultrathin semiconductor optoelectronic devices., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

A novel atomic layer method for encapsulating individual micro- and nano-particles with thin (sub-10-nm) dielectric films is presented. This method leverages the diffusion of vapor-phase precursors through an underlying inert polymer film to achieve growth of a metal oxide film on all sides of the particle simultaneously; even on the side that is in contact with the substrate. Crucially, the deposition is performed on stationary particles and does not require an agitation mechanism or a special reaction chamber. Organic-inorganic hybrids featuring tunable material properties can be readily generated by applying vapor- or liquid-phase infiltration (VPI or LPI) of inorganic materials into organic templates, with resulting properties controlled by type and quantity of infiltrated inorganics. While LPI offers more diverse choices of infiltratable elements, it tends to yield smaller infiltration amount than VPI, but the attempt to address the issue has been rarely reported. Here, we demonstrate a facile temperature-enhanced LPI method to control and drastically increase the quantity and kinetics of Pt infiltration into self-assembled polystyrene- block -poly(2-vinylpyridine) block copolymer (BCP) thin films. By applying LPI at mildly elevated temperatures (40-80 °C), we showcase controllable optical functionality of hybrid BCP films along with conductive three-dimensional (3D) inorganic nanostructures. Structural analysis reveals enhanced metal loading into the BCP matrix at higher LPI temperatures, suggesting multiple metal ion infiltration per monomer of P2VP. Combining temperature-enhanced LPI with hierarchical multilayer BCP self-assembly, we generate BCP-metal hybrid optical coatings featuring tunable antireflective properties as well as scalable conductive 3D Pt nanomesh structures. Enhanced material infiltration and control by temperature-enhanced LPI not only enables tunability of organic-inorganic hybrid nanostructures and properties but also expands the application of BCPs for generating uniquely functional inorganic nanostructures.

Three-dimensional (3D) nanoarchitectures can offer enhanced material properties, such as large surface areas that amplify the structures' interaction with environments making them useful for various sensing applications. Self-assembled block copolymers (BCPs) can readily generate various 3D nanomorphologies, but their conversion to useful inorganic materials remains one of the critical challenges against the practical application of self-assembled BCPs. This work reports the vapor-phase infiltration synthesis of optoelectrically active, 3D ZnO nanomesh architectures by combining hierarchical successive stacking of self-assembled, lamellar-phase polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) BCP thin films and a modified block-selective vapor-phase material infiltration protocol. The 3D ZnO nanomesh exhibits optoelectrical functionality, featuring stack-layer-number-dependent electrical conductance resembling the percolative transport originating from the intrinsic morphological network connectivity of the lamellar BCP pattern with symmetric block ratio. The results not only illustrate the first demonstration of electrical functionality based on the ZnO nanoarchitecture directly generated by the infiltration synthesis in self-assembled BCP thin films but also present a new, large-area scalable, metal oxide thin film nanoarchitecture fabrication method utilizing industry-compatible polymer solution coating and atomic layer deposition. Given the large surface area, three-dimensional porosity, and readily scalable fabrication procedures, the generated ZnO nanomesh promises potential applications as an efficient active medium in chemical and optical sensors.

Nanodiamonds hosting colour centres are a promising material platform for various quantum technologies. The fabrication of non-aggregated and uniformly-sized nanodiamonds with systematic integration of single quantum emitters has so far been lacking. Here, we present a top-down fabrication method to produce 30.0 ± 5.4 nm uniformly-sized single-crystal nanodiamonds by block copolymer self-assembled nanomask patterning together with directional and isotropic reactive ion etching. We show detected emission from bright single nitrogen vacancy centres hosted in the fabricated nanodiamonds. The lithographically precise patterning of large areas of diamond by self-assembled masks and their release into uniformly sized nanodiamonds open up new possibilities for quantum information processing and sensing.

ipso-Arylative ring-opening polymerization of 2-bromo-8-aryl-8H-indeno[2,1-b]thiophen-8-ol monomers proceeds to M n up to 9 kg mol -1 with conversion of the monomer diarylcarbinol groups to pendent conjugated aroylphenyl side chains (2-benzoylphenyl or 2-(4-hexylbenzoyl)phenyl), which influence the optical and electronic properties of the resulting polythiophenes. Poly(3-(2-(4-hexylbenzoyl)phenyl)thiophene) was found to have lower frontier orbital energy levels (HOMO/LUMO=-5.9/-4.0 eV) than poly(3-hexylthiophene) owing to the electron-withdrawing ability of the aryl ketone side chains. The electron mobility (ca. 2×10 -3  cm 2  V -1  s -1 ) for poly(3-(2-(4-hexylbenzoyl)phenyl)thiophene) was found to be significantly higher than the hole mobility (ca. 8×10 -6  cm 2  V -1  s -1 ), which suggests such polymers are candidates for n-type organic semiconductors. In situ wide-angle X-ray scattering together with infrared imaging was performed during three-dimensional material extrusion printing and correlated with the development of the crystalline structure and subsequent thermomechanical properties. Identical samples were printed with nozzle motion either along the short axis or the long axis. The short axis mode had higher thermal retention, which resulted in later onset of crystal structure. The longer time spent at temperatures between the glass transition and the melting point produced samples with higher degree of crystallinity but also significantly increased brittleness. The tracer diffusion coefficient D ( T ) , together with its temperature dependence, was measured using neutron reflectivity, and the total interdiffusion length between filaments was then calculated using D ( T ) for each temperature point, as determined by the measured thermal profiles. This allowed us to define the time/temperature plane that yielded the minimum diffusion length Δ L that provides mechanical integrity of the printed features ( Δ L less than the radius of gyration of the poly(l-lactide)). The model was probed by printing structures at four nozzle temperatures and measuring the time dependence of the thermal profiles at filaments in the horizontal and vertical positions. The data indicated that the thermal retention was anisotropic, where higher values were obtained in the horizontal plane. Mechanical measurements indicated large differential increases in the torsional strength, corresponding to the direction with increased thermal retention.

We here report the self-organization process of poly(styrene- b -ethylene/butadiene- b -styrene) (SEBS) triblock copolymer chains physically adsorbed on a non-neutral surface. Spin-cast SEBS thin films were prepared on silicon (Si) substrates and then annealed at a high temperature far above the bulk glass transition temperatures of the two constituent blocks. To reveal the buried interfacial structure, we utilized solvent rinsing processes and a suite of surface-sensitive techniques including ellipsometry, X-ray reflectivity, atomic force microscopy, and grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering. We revealed that the SEBS chains form two different chain structures on the substrate simultaneously: (i) "flattened chains" with the average height of 2.5 nm but without forming microdomain structures; (ii) "loosely adsorbed chains" with the average height of 11.0 nm and the formation of perpendicularly oriented cylindrical microdomains to the substrate surface. In addition, the kinetics to form the perpendicular-oriented cylinder was sluggish (∼200 h) and proceeded via multistep processes toward the equilibrium state. We also found that the lateral microdomain structures were distorted, and the characteristic lengths of the microdomains were slightly different from the bulk even after reaching "quasiequilibrium" state within the observed time window. Furthermore, we highlight the vital role of the adsorbed chains in the self-assembling process of the entire SEBS thin film: a long-range perturbation associated with the adsorbed chains propagates into the film interior, overwhelming the free surface effect associated with surface segregation of the lower surface tension of polystyrene blocks., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Oxygen and water vapor sensing properties are investigated in metal-oxide-hybrid polymer nanocomposite thin films generated by infiltration synthesis, which incorporates molecular ZnO into the matrix of SU-8 polymer, a common negative-tone photoresist. The hybrid thin films display 20-fold higher gravimetric responses to oxygen and water vapor than those of control ZnO thin films in the dark. An additional 50-500% enhanced responses are detected under UV irradiation. The overall enhanced gravimetric response in the hybrid film is attributed to the ZnO molecules distributed in the polymer matrix, whereas the UV enhancement is explained by the light-induced, reversible generation of hydrophilic fluoroantimonic acid from triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate photoacids, which leads to the increased surface potential and adsorption energies for oxygen and water. A gravimetric sensor based on a series of ZnO-infiltrated SU-8 films under UV excitation enables 96% accurate classification of water and oxygen environment with sub 10 mTorr detection limits. The results demonstrate UV-induced fully reversible surface hydrophilicity of ZnO/SU-8 hybrid nanocomposites.

Hybrid conjugated polymer/fullerene filaments based on MEH-PPV/PVP/PCBM were prepared by electrospinning, and their properties were assessed by scanning electron, atomic and lateral-force, tunneling, and confocal microscopies, as well as by attenuated-total-reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence quantum yield, and spatially resolved fluorescence. Highlighted features include the ribbon shape of the realized fibers and the persistence of a network serving as a template for heterogeneous active layers in solar cell devices. A set of favorable characteristics is evidenced in this way in terms of homogeneous charge-transport behavior and formation of effective interfaces for diffusion and dissociation of photogenerated excitons. The interaction of the organic filaments with light, exhibiting specific light-scattering properties of the nanofibrous mat, might also contribute to spreading incident radiation across the active layers, thus potentially enhancing photovoltaic performance. Modulus of resilience, the measure of a material's ability to store and release elastic strain energy, is critical for realizing advanced mechanical actuation technologies in micro/nanoelectromechanical systems. In general, engineering the modulus of resilience is difficult because it requires asymmetrically increasing yield strength and Young's modulus against their mutual scaling behavior. This task becomes further challenging if it needs to be carried out at the nanometer scale. Here, we demonstrate organic-inorganic hybrid composite nanopillars with one of the highest modulus of resilience per density by utilizing vapor-phase aluminum oxide infiltration in lithographically patterned negative photoresist SU-8. In situ nanomechanical measurements reveal a metal-like high yield strength (∼500 MPa) with an unusually low, foam-like Young's modulus (∼7 GPa), a unique pairing that yields ultrahigh modulus of resilience, reaching up to ∼24 MJ/m 3 as well as exceptional modulus of resilience per density of ∼13.4 kJ/kg, surpassing those of most engineering materials. The hybrid polymer nanocomposite features lightweight, ultrahigh tunable modulus of resilience and versatile nanoscale lithographic patternability with potential for application as nanomechanical components which require ultrahigh mechanical resilience and strength.

This paper describes the design and construction of a compact, "user-friendly" polarization-modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) instrument at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) of Brookhaven National Laboratory, which allows studying surfaces at pressures ranging from ultra-high vacuum to 100 Torr. Surface infrared spectroscopy is ideally suited for studying these processes as the vibrational frequencies of the IR chromophores are sensitive to the nature of the bonding environment on the surface. Relying on the surface selection rules, by modulating the polarization of incident light, it is possible to separate the contributions from the isotropic gas or solution phase, from the surface bound species. A spectral frequency range between 1000 cm -1 and 4000 cm -1 can be acquired. While typical spectra with a good signal to noise ratio can be obtained at elevated pressures of gases in ∼2 min at 4 cm -1 resolution, we have also acquired higher resolution spectra at 0.25 cm -1 with longer acquisition times. By way of verification, CO uptake on a heavily oxidized Ru(0001) sample was studied. As part of this test study, the presence of CO adsorbed on Ru bridge sites was confirmed, in agreement with previous ambient pressure X ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies. In terms of instrument performance, it was also determined that the gas phase contribution from CO could be completely removed even up to pressures close to 100 Torr. A second test study demonstrated the use of the technique for studying morphological properties of a spin coated polymer on a conductive surface. Note that this is a novel application of this technique. In this experiment, the polarization of incident light was modulated manually (vs. through a photoelastic modulator). It was demonstrated, in good agreement with the literature, that the polymer chains preferentially lie parallel with the surface. This PM-IRRAS system is small, modular, and easily reconfigurable. It also features a "vacuum suitcase" that allows for the integration of the PM-IRRAS system with the rest of the suite of instrumentation at our laboratory available to external users through the CFN user proposal system.

We report that the addition of a non-photoactive tertiary polymer phase in the binary bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cell leads to a self-assembled columnar nanostructure, enhancing the charge mobilities and photovoltaic efficiency with surprisingly increased optimal active blend thicknesses over 300 nm, 3-4 times larger than that of the binary counterpart. Using the prototypical poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):fullerene blend as a model BHJ system, we discover that the inert poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) added in the binary BHJ blend self-assembles into vertical columns, which not only template the phase segregation of electron acceptor fullerenes but also induce the out-of-plane rotation of the edge-on-orientated crystalline P3HT phase. Using complementary interrogation methods including neutron reflectivity, X-ray scattering, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations, we show that the enhanced charge transport originates from the more randomized molecular stacking of the P3HT phase and the spontaneous segregation of fullerenes at the P3HT/PMMA interface, driven by the high surface tension between the two polymeric components. The results demonstrate a potential method for increasing the thicknesses of high-performance polymer BHJ solar cells with improved photovoltaic efficiency, alleviating the burden of stringently controlling the ultrathin blend thickness during the roll-to-roll-type large-area manufacturing environment.

Patterning materials efficiently at the smallest length scales is a longstanding challenge in nanotechnology. Electron-beam lithography (EBL) is the primary method for patterning arbitrary features, but EBL has not reliably provided sub-4 nm patterns. The few competing techniques that have achieved this resolution are orders of magnitude slower than EBL. In this work, we employed an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope for lithography to achieve unprecedented resolution. Here we show aberration-corrected EBL at the one nanometer length scale using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and have produced both the smallest isolated feature in any conventional resist (1.7 ± 0.5 nm) and the highest density patterns in PMMA (10.7 nm pitch for negative-tone and 17.5 nm pitch for positive-tone PMMA). We also demonstrate pattern transfer from the resist to semiconductor and metallic materials at the sub-5 nm scale. These results indicate that polymer-based nanofabrication can achieve feature sizes comparable to the Kuhn length of PMMA and ten times smaller than its radius of gyration. Use of aberration-corrected EBL will increase the resolution, speed, and complexity in nanomaterial fabrication.

We report the effects of compressed CO 2 molecules as a novel plasticization agent for poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)-conjugated polymer thin films. In situ neutron reflectivity experiments demonstrated the excess sorption of CO 2 molecules in the P3HT thin films (about 40 nm in thickness) at low pressure (P = 8.2 MPa) under the isothermal condition of T = 36 °C, which is far below the polymer bulk melting point. The results proved that these CO 2 molecules accelerated the crystallization process of the polymer on the basis of ex situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction measurements after drying the films via rapid depressurization to atmospheric pressure: both the out-of-plane lamellar ordering of the backbone chains and the intraplane π-π stacking of the side chains were significantly improved, when compared with those in the control P3HT films subjected to conventional thermal annealing (at T = 170 °C). Electrical measurements elucidated that the CO 2 -annealed P3HT thin films exhibited enhanced charge carrier mobility along with decreased background charge carrier concentration and trap density compared with those in the thermally annealed counterpart. This is attributed to the CO 2 -induced increase in polymer chain mobility that can drive the detrapping of molecular oxygen and healing of conformational defects in the polymer thin film. Given the universality of the excess sorption of CO 2 regardless of the type of polymers, the present findings suggest that CO 2 annealing near the critical point can be useful as a robust processing strategy for improving the structural and electrical characteristics of other semiconducting conjugated polymers and related systems such as polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction films.

Noble metal nanoparticles are extensively used for sensitizing metal oxide chemical sensors through the catalytic spillover mechanism. However, due to earth-scarcity and high cost of noble metals, finding replacements presents a great economic benefit. Besides, high temperature and harsh environment sensor applications demand material stability under conditions approaching thermal and chemical stability limits of noble metals. In this study, we employed thermally stable perovskite-type La(0.8)Sr(0.2)FeO3 (LSFO) nanoparticle surface decoration on Ga2O3 nanorod array gas sensors and discovered an order of magnitude enhanced sensitivity to carbon monoxide at 500 °C. The LSFO nanoparticle catalysts was of comparable performance to that achieved by Pt nanoparticles, with a much lower weight loading than Pt. Detailed electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies suggested the LSFO nanoparticle sensitization effect is attributed to a spillover-like effect associated with the gas-LSFO-Ga2O3 triple-interfaces that spread the negatively charged surface oxygen ions from LSFO nanoparticles surfaces over to β-Ga2O3 nanorod surfaces with faster surface CO oxidation reactions.

Excitonic energy transfer (ET) offers exciting opportunities for advances in optoelectronic devices such as solar cells. While recent experimental attempts have demonstrated its potential in both organic and inorganic photovoltaics (PVs), what remains to be addressed is quantitative understanding of how different ET modes contribute to PV performance and how ET contribution is differentiated from the classical optical coupling (OC) effects. In this study, we implement an ET scheme using a PV device platform, comprising CdSe/ZnS nanocrystal energy donor and 500 nm-thick ultrathin Si acceptor layers, and present the quantitative mechanistic description of how different ET modes, distinguished from the OC effects, increase the light absorption and PV efficiency. We find that nanocrystal sensitization enhances the short circuit current of ultrathin Si solar cells by up to 35%, of which the efficient ET, primarily driven by a long-range radiative mode, contributes to 38% of the total current enhancement. These results not only confirm the positive impact of ET but also provide a guideline for rationally combining the ET and OC effects for improved light harvesting in PV and other optoelectronic devices.

Here a seedless and template-free technique is demonstrated to scalably grow bismuth nanowires, through thermal evaporation in high vacuum at RT. Conventionally reserved for the fabrication of metal thin films, thermal evaporation deposits bismuth into an array of vertical single crystalline nanowires over a flat thin film of vanadium held at RT, which is freshly deposited by magnetron sputtering or thermal evaporation. By controlling the temperature of the growth substrate the length and width of the nanowires can be tuned over a wide range. Responsible for this novel technique is a previously unknown nanowire growth mechanism that roots in the mild porosity of the vanadium thin film. Infiltrated into the vanadium pores, the bismuth domains (~ 1 nm) carry excessive surface energy that suppresses their melting point and continuously expels them out of the vanadium matrix to form nanowires. This discovery demonstrates the feasibility of scalable vapor phase synthesis of high purity nanomaterials without using any catalysts.

Despite numerous organic semiconducting materials synthesized for organic photovoltaics in the past decade, fullerenes are widely used as electron acceptors in highly efficient bulk-heterojunction solar cells. None of the non-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells have achieved efficiencies as high as fullerene-based solar cells. Design principles for fullerene-free acceptors remain unclear in the field. Here we report examples of helical molecular semiconductors as electron acceptors that are on par with fullerene derivatives in efficient solar cells. We achieved an 8.3% power conversion efficiency in a solar cell, which is a record high for non-fullerene bulk heterojunctions. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed both electron and hole transfer processes at the donor-acceptor interfaces. Atomic force microscopy reveals a mesh-like network of acceptors with pores that are tens of nanometres in diameter for efficient exciton separation and charge transport. This study describes a new motif for designing highly efficient acceptors for organic solar cells.

A major challenge in nanofabrication is to pattern unconventional substrates that cannot be processed for a variety of reasons, such as incompatibility with spin coating, electron beam lithography, optical lithography, or wet chemical steps. Here, we present a versatile nanofabrication method based on re-usable silicon membrane hard masks, patterned using standard lithography and mature silicon processing technology. These masks, transferred precisely onto targeted regions, can be in the millimetre scale. They allow for fabrication on a wide range of substrates, including rough, soft, and non-conductive materials, enabling feature linewidths down to 10 nm. Plasma etching, lift-off, and ion implantation are realized without the need for scanning electron/ion beam processing, UV exposure, or wet etching on target substrates.

The vertical integration of graphene with inorganic semiconductors, oxide semiconductors, and newly emerging layered materials has recently been demonstrated as a promising route toward novel electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, we report organic thin film transistors based on vertical heterojunctions of graphene and organic semiconductors. In these thin heterostructure devices, current modulation is accomplished by tuning of the injection barriers at the semiconductor/graphene interface with the application of a gate voltage. N-channel devices fabricated with a thin layer of C60 show a room temperature on/off ratio >10(4) and current density of up to 44 mAcm(-2). Because of the ultrashort channel intrinsic to the vertical structure, the device is fully operational at a driving voltage of 200 mV. A complementary p-channel device is also investigated, and a logic inverter based on two complementary transistors is demonstrated. The vertical integration of graphene with organic semiconductors via simple, scalable, and low-temperature fabrication processes opens up new opportunities to realize flexible, transparent organic electronic, and optoelectronic devices.

We present a methodology for probing light-matter interactions in prototype photovoltaic devices consisting of an organic semiconductor active layer with a semitransparent metal electrical contact exhibiting surface plasmon-based enhanced optical transmission. We achieve high-spectral irradiance in a spot size of less than 100 μm using a high-brightness laser-driven light source and appropriate coupling optics. Spatially resolved Fourier transform photocurrent spectroscopy in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions allows us to measure external quantum efficiency with high sensitivity in small-area devices (<1 mm 2 ). This allows for rapid fabrication of variable-pitch sub-wavelength hole arrays in metal films for use as transparent electrical contacts, and evaluation of the evanescent and propagating mode coupling to resonances in the active layer.

We report an efficiency of 6.1% for a solution-processed non-fullerene solar cell using a helical perylene diimide (PDI) dimer as the electron acceptor. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed both electron and hole transfer processes at the donor-acceptor interfaces, indicating that charge carriers are created from photogenerated excitons in both the electron donor and acceptor phases. Light-intensity-dependent current-voltage measurements suggested different recombination rates under short-circuit and open-circuit conditions.

We report high-yield room-temperature growth of vertical single-crystalline bismuth nanowire array by vacuum thermal evaporation of bismuth over a choice of arbitrary substrate coated with a thin interlayer of nanoporous vanadium. The nanowire growth is the result of spontaneous and continuous expulsion of nanometer-sized bismuth domains from the vanadium pores, driven by their excessive surface energy that suppresses the melting point of bismuth close to room temperature. The simplicity of the technique opens a new avenue for the growth of nanowire arrays of a variety of materials.

We report the synthesis of a tellurophene-containing low-bandgap polymer, PDPPTe2T, by microwave-assisted palladium-catalyzed ipso-arylative polymerization of 2,5-bis[(α-hydroxy-α,α-diphenyl)methyl]tellurophene with a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) monomer. Compared with the corresponding thiophene analog, PDPPTe2T absorbs light of longer wavelengths and has a smaller bandgap. Bulk heterojunction solar cells prepared from PDPPTe2T and PC71 BM show PCE values of up to 4.4%. External quantum efficiency measurements show that PDPPTe2T produces photocurrent at wavelengths up to 1 µm. DFT calculations suggest that the atomic substitution from sulfur to tellurium increases electronic coupling to decrease the length of the carbon-carbon bonds between the tellurophene and thiophene rings, which results in the red-shift in absorption upon substitution of tellurium for sulfur., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report a general strategy for fine-tuning the bandgap of donor-acceptor-donor based organic molecules by modulating the electron-donating ability of the donor moiety by changing the benzochalcogenophene donor groups from benzothiophenes to benzoselenophenes to benzotellurophenes. These molecules show red-shifts in absorption and external quantum efficiency maxima from sulfur to selenium to tellurium. In bulk heterojunction solar cell devices, the benzoselenophene derivative shows a power conversion efficiency as high as 5.8% with PC61BM as the electron acceptor.

Systematic changes in the exocyclic substiution of core phthalocyanine platform tune the absorption properties to yield commercially viable dyes that function as the primary light absorbers in organic bulk heterojunction solar cells. Blends of these complementary phthalocyanines absorb a broader portion of the solar spectrum compared to a single dye, thereby increasing solar cell performance. We correlate grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering structural data with solar cell performance to elucidate the role of nanomorphology of active layers composed of blends of phthalocyanines and a fullerene derivative. A highly reproducible device architecture is used to assure accuracy and is relevant to films for solar windows in urban settings. We demonstrate that the number and structure of the exocyclic motifs dictate phase formation, hierarchical organization, and nanostructure, thus can be employed to tailor active layer morphology to enhance exciton dissociation and charge collection efficiencies in the photovoltaic devices. These studies reveal that disordered films make better solar cells, short alkanes increase the optical density of the active layer, and branched alkanes inhibit unproductive homogeneous molecular alignment.
