Computational and data-enabled science and engineering are revolutionizing advances throughout science and society, at all scales of computing. For example, teams in the U.S. DOE Exascale Computing Project have been tackling new frontiers in modeling, simulation, and analysis by exploiting unprecedented exascale computing capabilities-building an advanced software ecosystem that supports next-generation applications and addresses disruptive changes in computer architectures. However, concerns are growing about the productivity of the developers of scientific software, its sustainability, and the trustworthiness of the results that it produces. Members of the IDEAS project serve as catalysts to address these challenges through fostering software communities, incubating and curating methodologies and resources, and disseminating knowledge to advance developer productivity and software sustainability. This paper discusses how these synergistic activities are advancing scientific discovery-mitigating technical risks by building a firmer foundation for reproducible, sustainable science at all scales of computing, from laptops to clusters to exascale and beyond., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure

Disaggregated memory is a promising approach that addresses the limitations of traditional memory architectures by enabling memory to be decoupled from compute nodes and shared across a data center. Cloud platforms have deployed such systems to improve overall system memory utilization, but performance can vary across workloads. High-performance computing (HPC) is crucial in scientific and engineering applications, where HPC machines also face the issue of underutilized memory. As a result, improving system memory utilization while understanding workload performance is essential for HPC operators. Therefore, learning the potential of a disaggregated memory system before deployment is a critical step. This paper proposes a methodology for exploring the design space of a disaggregated memory system. It incorporates key metrics that affect performance on disaggregated memory systems: memory capacity, local and remote memory access ratio, injection bandwidth, and bisection bandwidth, providing an intuitive approach to guide machine configurations based on technology trends and workload characteristics. We apply our methodology to analyze thirteen diverse workloads, including AI training, data analysis, genomics, protein, fusion, atomic nuclei, and traditional HPC bookends. Our methodology demonstrates the ability to comprehend the potential and pitfalls of a disaggregated memory system and provides motivation for machine configurations. Our results show that eleven of our thirteen applications can leverage injection bandwidth disaggregated memory without affecting performance, while one pays a rack bisection bandwidth penalty and two pay the system-wide bisection bandwidth penalty. Accuracy of molecular dynamics simulations depends crucially on the interatomic potential used to generate forces. The gold standard would be first-principles quantum mechanics (QM) calculations, but these become prohibitively expensive at large simulation scales. Machine learning (ML) based potentials aim for faithful emulation of QM at drastically reduced computational cost. The accuracy and robustness of an ML potential is primarily limited by the quality and diversity of the training dataset. Using the principles of active learning (AL), we present a highly automated approach to dataset construction. The strategy is to use the ML potential under development to sample new atomic configurations and, whenever a configuration is reached for which the ML uncertainty is sufficiently large, collect new QM data. Here, we seek to push the limits of automation, removing as much expert knowledge from the AL process as possible. All sampling is performed using MD simulations starting from an initially disordered configuration, and undergoing non-equilibrium dynamics as driven by time-varying applied temperatures. We demonstrate this approach by building an ML potential for aluminum (ANI-Al). After many AL iterations, ANI-Al teaches itself to predict properties like the radial distribution function in melt, liquid-solid coexistence curve, and crystal properties such as defect energies and barriers. To demonstrate transferability, we perform a 1.3M atom shock simulation, and show that ANI-Al predictions agree very well with DFT calculations on local atomic environments sampled from the nonequilibrium dynamics. Interestingly, the configurations appearing in shock appear to have been well sampled in the AL training dataset, in a way that we illustrate visually.

The current disparity in computational knowledge is a critical hindrance to the diversity and success of the field. The UNEDF project was a large-scale collaborative effort that applied high-performance computing to the nuclear quantum many-body problem. UNEDF demonstrated that close associations among nuclear physicists, mathematicians, and computer scientists can lead to novel physics outcomes built on algorithmic innovations and computational developments. This review showcases a wide range of UNEDF science results to illustrate this interplay.

We discuss computational aspects of the spherical coupled-cluster method specific to the nuclear many-body problem. Using chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction at next-to-next-to-next-to leading order (N3LO) with cutoff Lambda = 500MeV, we present coupled-cluster results for the ground state of 40Ca. We continue a series of numerical experiments on many-body systems with random two-body interactions, by examining correlations in ratios in excitation energies of yrast $J$ = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 states. Previous studies, limited only to $J$ = 0,2,4 states, had shown strong correlations in boson systems but not fermion systems. By including $J \ge 6$ states and considering different scatter plots, strong and realistic correlations appear in both boson and fermion systems. Recent investigations have looked at the many-body spectra of random two-body interactions. In fermion systems, such as the interacting shell model, one finds pairing-like spectra, while in boson systems, such as IBM-1, one finds rotational and vibrational spectra.
