Abstract

Microtubules are among bio-polymers providing vital functions in dynamic cellular processes. Artificial organization of these bio-polymers is a requirement for transferring their native functions into device applications. Using electrophoresis, we achieve an accumulation of microtubules along a metallic glass (Pd42.5Cu30Ni7.5P20) microwire in solution. According to an estimate based on migration velocities of microtubules approaching the wire, the electrophoretic mobility of microtubules is around 10-12 m2/Vs. This value is four orders of magnitude smaller than the typical mobility reported previously. Fluorescence microscopy at the individual-microtubule level shows microtubules aligning along the wire axis during the electric field-induced migration. Caseintreated electrodes are effective to reversibly release trapped microtubules upon removal of the external field. Abstract

Hydrogels with tunable electrical and mechanical properties have a wide range of biological applications in tissue engineering, biosensing, and biorobotics. In this work, palladium-based metallic glass sub-micron wires (PdMGSMWs) were employed to enhance the conductivity and mechanical strength of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) gels. The values of electrical resistivity and stiffness of hybrid GelMA-PdMGSMW hydrogels were varied by the concentration of the sub-micron wires in the gels. Compared with pristine GelMA gels, hybrid GelMA-PdMGSMW gels were more efficient in regulating adhesion and spreading of C2C12 myoblasts. Formation, contractility, and metabolic activity of C2C12 myotubes in GelMA hydrogels also increased upon inclusion of the PdMGSMWs and applying electrical stimulation. The latter phenomenon is likely because of the electrical conductivity of hybrid GelMA gels.

Gas atomization which is a conventional technique inpowder metallurgyis adapted for the formation of metallic glass nanowires. This approachis able to produce a large quantity of nanowires with diameters inthe 50–2000 nm range. Abstract

Atomic force microscope (AFM) makes it possible to image the surface morphological evolutions of the Zr50Cu40Al10 bulk metallic glass (BMG). The heating in vacuum leads to the creation of nanoclusters and the significant structural changes driven by viscous flow. Auger electron spectroscopy confirms that the nanoclusters correspond to zirconium oxide. Furthermore, the nanoclusters do not influence the crystallization process of the BMG but the viscous flow is crucial to surface modification. The temperature dependent AFM observation combined with chemical analysis is a new protocol to study fundamental properties of BMG surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Composites Part B: Engineering 281, 111519 (2024); https://doi.org/10.1016/j.compositesb.2024.111519., Owing to its cost-effectiveness and low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), micron Si is incorporated into sintered Ag matrix to develop an Ag@Si composite sintering strategy. The Si integration helps reduce cost and alleviate CTE-mismatch of Ag-sintered die attachments. An innovative Ag@Si composite sintering structure is achieved by low-temperature and pressure-less sintering process, where a possibly slight diffusion of native SiO2 on the Si surface toward Ag is indicated by TEM observation, enabling the integration of Ag and Si into one continuous network. Owing to the robust well-bonded composite sintering, the Ag@Si joining strategy provides mechanical/microstructural reliability far beyond the pure Ag sinter joining, demonstrating significant prospects in high-temperature interconnection applications. During the harsh thermal cycling (−50–250 °C), the mitigating effect of the Si addition on CTE mismatch is manifested through the substantial suppression of microstructure deterioration in Ag@Si joint that occurs in pure-Ag-sintered joint, while the shear strength retention rate is doubled. Detailed investigation into the mechanism for elevated performance was conducted by material property and Missies stress analysis. The incorporation of Si helps modify the CTE, elastic properties, and stress distribution of Ag@Si-sintered material, synergistically contributing to the satisfactory joining reliability.
