Abstract

Triticale is a man-made cereal, developed by cross-breeding wheat (Triticum) and rye (Secale). The possibilities of using triticale flour in bread-making are discussed. Wheat flour was blended with triticale flour and results suggest that only the water solubles fraction produced the same baking performance as the original triticale flour. Baking results seem to be related to alpha-amylase activity of the triticale flour.

Abstract

The boiling characteristics of water-based and ionic magnetic fluids are examined using x-ray microfocus and heat transfer experiments. Results show that water-based and ionic fluids degrade when their particles come in contact with high temperature surfaces. However, the ionic magnetic fluid exhibited better heat transfer characteristics than the water-based fluid. Water-based and ionic fluids were also stable when heated at 353 K in vacuum.

Abstract

Extended x-ray-absorption fine structure studies of the structure of coprecipitated ZnFe2O4 suggest that the zinc ions occupy both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. The resulting cation distribution increases the magnetization in coprecipitated zinc ferrite. The occupation of Zn ions in octahedral sites leads to a structural deformation that decreases the periodicity of the structure, reducing the radial structure function amplitude.

Abstract

The magnetic and hydrodynamic properties of magnetic fluid depend on the micro behavior of the particles in the media. In this paper, we discuss the relaxation mechanism of Mn-Zn and cobalt ferrite particles in kerosene based magnetic fluid by measuring the initial susceptibilities in the temperature range of 83-293K. The Mn-Zn ferrite magnetic fluid was found to consist almost only of superparamagnetic(SP) particles, where as the cobalt ferrite magnetic fluid consists mostly of non-SP particles that relax through Brownian rotation for fields less than 440 Oe and influence the magnetic and hydrodynamic properties of the fluid.

Abstract

Objective: A 3-dimensional alginate bead culturing method using rabbit articular chondrocytes was studied for the screening of the effectiveness of drugs for articular diseases. Design: The beads cultured with IL-1β, TGF-β, and Hyaluronan (HA) were evaluated histochemically with Alecian blue and immunohistochemically with CS-56 antibody. Chondrocytes in alginate beads were arbitrarily classified into four groups: 1) chodrocyte surrounded with cell-associated matrix (CAM) in which proteoglycan (PG) was positively stained (PG-possitive chondrocyte); 2) chondrocyte with PG-negative CAM; 3) PG-positive CAM alone, and 4) PG-negative CAM alone. Total sulfated GAG concentrations in the culture media were quantitated by dimethylmethylene blue (DMMB) assay. ProMMP-3, TIMP-1 and –2 concentrations in the culture media were determined by sandwich enzyme immunoassays. Results: Significant increase of PG-nagative cells were immunohistochemically found by IL-1β stimulation. The pretreatment with TGF-β almost fully suppressed those increase of PG-negative cells by IL-1β. Both GAG and proMMP-3 concentrations in the culture media were significantly increased after IL-1β stimulation. There were no significant differences in both TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 concentrations in the culture media with or without IL-1β stimulation. 800-kDa HA reduced significantly the number of PG-negative cells and proMMP-3 concentration in the culture media, but showed no effects on the concentrations of both TIMPs. Conclusions: Because this 3-dimensional chondrocyte culture in alginate beads is close to in vivo conditions, this method can be used for evaluation of the effectiveness of novel drugs for articular diseases.

Abstract

Nanostructured CdFe[sub 2]O[sub 4] spinel powders with various grain sizes ranging from 60 to 4 nm were synthesized by ball milling the bulk material. The magnetization measurements at 1 and 9 T reveal a spin-glass-like surface structure and the material is found to have a large anisotropy. Mo¨ssbauer studies at 10 K in external magnetic fields of 6 and 8.5 T applied parallel to the direction of gamma rays could clearly show that CdFe[sub 2]O[sub 4] behaves like a mixed spinel on reducing the grain size to nanometer level and exhibits ferrimagnetic ordering.
