The $d^5$ electron configurations under the crystal field, spin-orbit coupling, and Coulomb interaction give rise to a plethora of profound ground states. Ruthenium perovskite oxides exhibit a number of unconventional properties yet the Ru$^{4+}$ state ($4d^4$) is usually stable in these materials. In this regard, Ru$^{3+}$ ions in perovskite materials are expected to be a mesmerising playground of $4d^5$ electron configurations. Here, we report measurements of x-ray photoemission spectroscopy on recently synthesized perovskite ruthenium oxide thin films, LaRuO$_3$ and NdRuO$_3$, whose valence state of the ruthenium ions is trivalent. We discuss correlation and spin-orbit effects from the valence-band spectra, in particular an additional peak structure around 3-5 eV, reminiscent of the so-called 3 eV peak observed in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Moreover, we find that the core-level spectra of these materials are quantitatively different from those in other ruthenates which possess Ru$^{4+}$ ions, e.g., SrRuO$_3$. We therefore argue that the core level spectra of LaRuO$_3$ and NdRuO$_3$ are peculiar to the Ru$^{3+}$ states., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The physics of driven collective modes in quantum materials underpin a number of striking non-equilibrium functional responses, which include enhanced magnetism, ferroelectricity and superconductivity. However, the coherent coupling between multiple modes at once are difficult to capture by single-pump probe (one-dimensional) spectroscopy, and often remain poorly understood. One example is phonon-mediated amplification of Josephson plasmons in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, in which at least three normal modes of the solid are coherently mixed as a source of enhanced superconductivity. Here, we go beyond previous pump-probe experiments in this system and acquire two-dimensional frequency maps using pairs of mutually delayed, carrier envelope phase stable mid-infrared pump pulses, combined with measurements of the time-modulated second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. We find that the driven zone-center phonons amplify coherent pairs of opposite-momentum Josephson plasma polaritons, generating a squeezed state of interlayer phase fluctuations. The squeezed state is a potentially important ingredient in the microscopic physics of photo-induced superconductivity in this and other materials., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

Signatures of photo-induced superconductivity have been reported in cuprate materials subjected to a coherent phonon drive. A 'cold' superfluid was extracted from the transient Terahertz conductivity and was seen to coexist with 'hot' uncondensed quasi-particles, a hallmark of a driven-dissipative system of which the interplay between coherent and incoherent responses are not well understood. Here, time resolved spontaneous Raman scattering was used to probe the lattice temperature in the photo-induced superconducting state of YBa2Cu3O6.48. An increase in lattice temperature of approximately 80 K was observed by measuring the time dependent Raman scattering intensity of an undriven 'spectator' phonon mode. This is to be compared with an estimated increase in quasi-particle temperatures of nearly 200 K. These temperature changes provide quantitative information on the nature of the driven state and its decay, and may provide a strategy to optimize this effect., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Coherent optical excitation of certain phonon modes in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ has been shown to induce superconducting-like interlayer coherence at temperatures higher than $T_c$. Recent work has associated these phenomena to a parametric excitation and amplification of Josephson plasma polaritons, which are overdamped above $T_c$ but are made coherent by the phonon drive. However, the dissipative response of uncondensed quasiparticles, which do not couple in the same way to the phonon drive, has not been addressed. Here, we investigate both the enhancement of the superfluid density, $\omega\sigma_2(\omega)$, and the dissipative response of quasiparticles, $\sigma_1(\omega)$, by systematically tuning the duration and energy of the mid-infrared pulse while keeping the peak field fixed. We find that the photo-induced superfluid density saturates to the zero-temperature equilibrium value for pulses made longer than the phonon dephasing time, whilst the dissipative component continues to grow with increasing pulse duration. We show that superfluid and dissipation remain uncoupled as long as the drive is on, and identify an optimal regime of pump pulse durations for which the superconducting response is maximum and dissipation is minimized., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

The normal state of high-Tc cuprates has been considered one of the essential topics in high-temperature superconductivity research. However, compared to the high magnetic fields study of it, understanding a photoinduced normal state remains elusive. Here, we explore a photoinduced normal state of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ (YBCO) through a charge density wave (CDW) with time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering, as well as a high-magnetic field x-ray scattering. In the non-equilibrium state in which people predict a quenched superconducting state based on the previous optical spectroscopies, we experimentally observed a similar analogy to the competition between superconductivity and CDW shown in the equilibrium state. We further observe that the broken pairing states in the superconducting CuO$_2$ plane via the optical pump lead to nucleation of three-dimensional CDW precursor correlation, revealing that the photoinduced CDW is similar to phenomena shown under magnetic fields. Ultimately, these findings provide a critical clue that the characteristics of the photoinduced normal state show a solid resemblance to those under magnetic fields in equilibrium conditions., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures and Supplementary Materials with 6 pages, 9 figures

In order to study the possible superconductivity at the polar surfaces of 1111-type iron-based superconductors, which is doped with a large amount of holes in spite of the electron doping in bulk materials, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on superconducting PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$~crystals. We have indeed observed the opening of a superconducting gap on surface-derived hole pockets as well as on a bulk-derived hole pocket. The superconducting gap is found to open on the surface-derived hole pockets below the bulk $T_c$, which suggests that the surface superconductivity is possibly induced by proximity effect from the bulk. We have also observed the opening of a large pseudogap on the surface-derived hole pockets, which is similar to the pseudogap in 122-type bulk superconductors doped with a smaller amount of holes. This suggests that the opening of a large pseudogap is a characteristic property of hole-doped iron-based superconductors., Comment: Accepted in Physical Review Research

For orthorhombic superconductors we define thermodynamic anisotropy $N \equiv d T_c/d \epsilon_{22} - dT_c/d \epsilon_{11}$ as the difference in how superconducting $T_c$ varies with strains $\epsilon_{ii}$, $i=(1, 2)$, along the in-plane directions. We study the hole doping ($p$) dependence of $N$ on detwinned single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) using ultrasound technique. While the structural orthorhombicity of YBCO reduces monotonically with decreasing doping over $0.065

We report a comprehensive Cu L$_3$-edge resonant x-ray scattering study of two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) incommensurate charge correlations in single crystals of the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ under uniaxial compression up to 1% along the two inequivalent Cu-O-Cu bond directions (a and b) in the CuO$_2$ planes. The pressure response of the 2D charge correlations is symmetric: pressure along a enhances correlations along b, and vice versa. Our results imply that the underlying order parameter is uniaxial. In contrast, 3D long-range charge order is only observed along b in response to compression along a. Spectroscopic resonant x-ray scattering measurements show that the 3D charge order resides exclusively in the CuO$_2$ planes and may thus be generic to the cuprates. We discuss implications of these results for models of electronic nematicity and for the interplay between charge order and superconductivity., Comment: Revised version - Accepted for publication in Phys. The electron-doped cuprates are usually characterized by a more robust antiferromagnetic phase and a much narrower superconducting (SC) dome than those of the hole-doped counterparts. Recently, bulk single crystals of Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4-{\delta} (PLCCO) prepared by the protect annealing method have been studied extensively and revealed many intriguing properties that were different from those obtained from samples annealed by the conventional methods. Here, we report on a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of PLCCO single crystals after protect annealing. The results indicate that the actual electron concentration (nFS ) estimated from the Fermi-surface area is significantly larger than the Ce concentration x and the new nFS-based SC dome of PLCCO is more extended towards the overdoped side than the x-based SC dome derived for samples prepared using the conventional annealing method.

For electron-doped cuprates, the strong suppression of antiferromagnetic spin correlation by efficient reduction annealing by the "protect-annealing" method leads to superconductivity not only with lower Ce concentrations but also with higher transition temperatures. To reveal the nature of this superconducting state, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of protect-annealed electron-doped superconductors Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and directly investigated the superconducting gap. The gap was found to be consistent with $d$-wave symmetry, suggesting that strong electron correlation persists and hence antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations remain a candidate that mediates Copper pairing in the protect-annealed electron-doped cuprates.

The nature of the pseudogap and its relationship with superconductivity are one of the central issues of cuprate superconductors. Recently, a possible scenario has been proposed that the pseudogap state is a distinct phase characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking called "nematicity" based on transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements, where the symmetry breaking was observed below the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. Here, we report a temperature-dependent ARPES study of nematicity in slightly overdoped Bi${}_{1.7}$Pb${}_{0.5}$Sr${}_{1.9}$CaCu${}_2$O${}_{8+\delta}$ triggered by a uniaxial strain applied along one of the Cu-O bond directions. While the nematicity was enhanced in the pseudogap state as in the previous studies, it was suppressed in the superconducting state. These results indicate that the pseudogap state is characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking and that the nematicity may compete with superconductivity. These new experimental insights may provide clues for the nature of the pseudogap and its relation to the superconductivity.

In order to investigate the electronic properties of the semiconducting van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT), where ferromagnetic layers are bonded through van der Waals forces, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density-functional-theory (DFT+U) calculations. The valence-band maximum at the {\Gamma} point is located $\sim$ 0.2 eV below the Fermi level, consistent with the semiconducting property of CGT. Comparison of the experimental density of states with the DFT calculation has suggested that Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d electrons U$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 1.1 eV. The DFT+U calculation indicates that magnetic coupling between Cr atoms within the layer is ferromagnetic if Coulomb U $_{\rm eff}$ is smaller than 3.0 eV and that the inter-layer coupling is ferromagnetic below U$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 1.0 eV. We therefore conclude that, for U$_{\rm eff}$ deduced by the experiment, the intra-layer Cr-Cr coupling is ferromagnetic and the inter-layer coupling is near the boundary between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, which means experimentally deduced U$_{\rm eff}$ is consistent with theoretical ferromagnetic condition., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Bulk crystals of electron-doped cuprates with the T'-type structure require both Ce substitutions and reduction annealing for the emergence of superconductivity while the reduction annealing alone can induce superconductivity in thin films of the T'-type cuprates. In order to reveal low-energy electronic states which are responsible for the superconductivity, we have conducted angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on thin films of the superconducting Ce-free T'-type cuprate Pr$_2$CuO$_4$. The results indicate that the overall band structure and the Fermi surface area of the superconducting Pr$_2$CuO$_4$ are similar to those of superconducting Ce-doped bulk single crystals, highlighting the importance of the actual electron concentration rather than the Ce concentration when discussing the physical properties of the T'-type cuprates.

Euglena, a swimming micro-organism, exhibited a characteristic bioconvection that was localized at the center of a sealed chamber under bright illumination to induce negative phototaxis. This localized pattern consisted of high-density spots, in which convection was found. These observations were reproduced by a mathematical model that was based on the phototaxis of individual cells in both the vertical and lateral directions. Our results indicate that this convection is maintained by upward swimming, as with general bioconvection, and the localization originates from lateral phototaxis.
