The paper presents the third data release of Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP), a wide-field multi-band imaging survey with the Subaru 8.2m telescope. HSC-SSP has three survey layers (Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep) with different area coverages and depths, designed to address a wide array of astrophysical questions. This third release from HSC-SSP includes data from 278 nights of observing time and covers about 670 square degrees in all five broad-band filters at the full depth ($\sim26$~mag at $5\sigma$) in the Wide layer. If we include partially observed area, the release covers 1,470 square degrees. The Deep and UltraDeep layers have $\sim80\%$ of the originally planned integration times, and are considered done, as we have slightly changed the observing strategy in order to compensate for various time losses. There are a number of updates in the image processing pipeline. Of particular importance is the change in the sky subtraction algorithm; we subtract the sky on small scales before the detection and measurement stages, which has significantly reduced false detections. Thanks to this and other updates, the overall quality of the processed data has improved since the previous release. However, there are limitations in the data (for example, the pipeline is not optimized for crowded fields), and we encourage the user to check the quality assurance plots as well as a list of known issues before exploiting the data. Quasars (QSOs) hosting supermassive black holes are believed to reside in massive halos harboring galaxy overdensities. However, many observations revealed average or low galaxy densities around $z\gtrsim6$ QSOs. This could be partly because they measured galaxy densities in only tens of arcmin$^2$ around QSOs and might have overlooked potential larger scale galaxy overdensities. Some previous studies also observed only Lyman break galaxies (LBGs, massive older galaxies) and missed low mass young galaxies like Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) around QSOs. Here we present observations of LAE and LBG candidates in $\sim700$ arcmin$^2$ around a $z=6.61$ luminous QSO using Subaru Telescope Suprime-Cam with narrow/broadbands. We compare their sky distributions, number densities and angular correlation functions with those of LAEs/LBGs detected in the same manner and comparable data quality in our control blank field. In the QSO field, LAEs and LBGs are clustering in 4-20 comoving Mpc angular scales, but LAEs show mostly underdensity over the field while LBGs are forming $30\times60$ comoving Mpc$^2$ large scale structure containing 3-$7\sigma$ high density clumps. The highest density clump includes a bright (23.78 mag in the narrowband) extended ($\gtrsim 16$ kpc) Ly$\alpha$ blob candidate, indicative of a dense environment. The QSO could be part of the structure but is not located exactly at any of the high density peaks. Near the QSO, LAEs show underdensity while LBGs average to $4\sigma$ excess densities compared to the control field. The first detected gravitational wave from a neutron star merger was GW170817. In this study, we present J-GEM follow-up observations of SSS17a, an electromagnetic counterpart of GW170817. SSS17a shows a 2.5-mag decline in the $z$-band from 1.7 days to 7.7 days after the merger. Such a rapid decline is not comparable with supernovae light curves at any epoch. The color of SSS17a also evolves rapidly and becomes redder for later epochs; the $z-H$ color changed by approximately 2.5 mag in the period of 0.7 days to 7.7 days. The rapid evolution of both the optical brightness and the color are consistent with the expected properties of a kilonova that is powered by the radioactive decay of newly synthesized $r$-process nuclei. Kilonova models with Lanthanide elements can reproduce the aforementioned observed properties well, which suggests that $r$-process nucleosynthesis beyond the second peak takes place in SSS17a. However, the absolute magnitude of SSS17a is brighter than the expected brightness of the kilonova models with the ejecta mass of 0.01 $\Msun$, which suggests a more intense mass ejection ($\sim 0.03 \Msun$) or possibly an additional energy source., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Recent detection of gravitational waves from a neutron star (NS) merger event GW170817 and identification of an electromagnetic counterpart provide a unique opportunity to study the physical processes in NS mergers. To derive properties of ejected material from the NS merger, we perform radiative transfer simulations of kilonova, optical and near-infrared emissions powered by radioactive decays of r-process nuclei synthesized in the merger. We find that the observed near-infrared emission lasting for > 10 days is explained by 0.03 Msun of ejecta containing lanthanide elements. However, the blue optical component observed at the initial phases requires an ejecta component with a relatively high electron fraction (Ye). We show that both optical and near-infrared emissions are simultaneously reproduced by the ejecta with a medium Ye of ~ 0.25. We suggest that a dominant component powering the emission is post-merger ejecta, which exhibits that mass ejection after the first dynamical ejection is quite efficient. Our results indicate that NS mergers synthesize a wide range of r-process elements and strengthen the hypothesis that NS mergers are the origin of r-process elements in the Universe., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. We present the results of the detailed analysis of an optical imaging survey conducted using the Subaru / Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), which aims to identify an optical counterpart to the gravitational wave event GW151226. In half a night, the $i$- and $z$-band imaging survey by HSC covers 63.5deg$^2$ of the error region, which contains about 7\% of the LIGO localization probability, and the same field is observed in three different epochs. The detectable magnitude of the candidates in a differenced image is evaluated as $i \sim 23.2$ mag for the requirement of at least two 5$\sigma$ detections, and 1744 candidates are discovered. Assuming a kilonova as an optical counterpart, we compared the optical properties of the candidates with model predictions. A red and rapidly declining light curve condition enables the discrimination of a kilonova from other transients, and a small number of candidates satisfy this condition. The presence of stellar-like counterparts in the reference frame suggests that the surviving candidates are likely to be flare stars. The fact that most of those candidates are in galactic plane, $|b|<5^{\circ}$, supports this interpretation. We also checked whether the candidates are associated with the nearby GLADE galaxies, which reduces the number of contaminants even with a looser color cut. When a better probability map (with localization accuracy of $\sim50{\rm deg}^2$) is available, kilonova searches of up to approximately $200$ Mpc will become feasible by conducting immediate follow-up observations with an interval of 3--6 days., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, Submitted to PASJ on 12 Aug 2017

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the high-redshift Universe are thought to reside in overdense environments. However, recent works provide controversial results partly due to the use of different techniques and possible suppression of nearby galaxy formation by AGN feedback. We conducted deep and wide-field imaging observations with the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope and searched for Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) around two QSOs (quasi-stellar objects) at $z\sim4.9$ and a radio galaxy at $z\sim4.5$ by using narrow-band filters to address these issues more robustly. In the QSO fields, we obtained additional broad-band images to select Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at $z\sim5$ for comparison. We constructed a photometric sample of 301 LAEs and 170 LBGs in total. A wide field of view (34arcmin$\times$27arcmin, corresponding to 80$\times$60 comoving Mpc$^2$) of the Suprime-Cam enabled us to probe galaxies in the immediate vicinities of the AGNs and in the blank fields simultaneously and compare various properties of them in a consistent manner. The two QSOs are located near local density peaks ($<2\sigma$) and one of the QSOs has a close companion LAE with projected separation of 80 physical kpc. The radio galaxy is found to be near a void of LAEs. The number densities of LAEs/LGBs in a larger spatial scale around the AGNs are not significantly different from those in blank fields. No sign of feedback is found down to $L_{Ly\alpha}\sim10^{41.8}\mathrm{~erg~s^{-1}}$. We present the environmental dependence of colour, stellar mass, and star formation (SF) activity in H-alpha-selected galaxies along the large-scale structure at z=0.4 hosting twin clusters in DEEP2-3 field, discovered by Subaru Strategic Programme of Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC SSP). By combining photo-z selected galaxies and H-alpha emitters selected with broad-band and narrow-band (NB) data of the recent data release of HSC SSP (DR1), we confirm that galaxies in higher-density environments or galaxies in the cluster central regions show redder colours. We find that there still remains a possible colour-density and colour-radius correlation even if we restrict the sample to H-alpha-selected galaxies, likely due to the presence of massive H-alpha emitters in denser regions. We also find a hint of increased star formation rates (SFR) amongst H-alpha emitters towards the highest-density environment, again primarily driven by the excess of red/massive H-alpha emitters in high-density environment, while their specific SFR does not significantly change with environment. We detect 20 $z=7.0$ Ly$\alpha$ emitter (LAE) candidates to $L({\rm Ly}\alpha) \geq 2 \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ or $0.3$ $L^*_{z=7}$ and in $6.1\times 10^5$ Mpc$^3$ volume in the Subaru Deep Field and the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey field by 82 and 37 hours of Subaru Suprime-Cam narrowband NB973 and reddest optical $y$-band imaging. We compare their Ly$\alpha$ and UV luminosity functions (LFs) and densities and Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths (EWs) to those of $z=5.7$, 6.6 and 7.3 LAEs from previous Suprime-Cam surveys. The Ly$\alpha$ LF (density) rapidly declines by a factor of $\times$1.5 (1.9) in $L({\rm Ly}\alpha)$ at $z=5.7-6.6$ (160 Myr), $\times$1.5 (1.6) at $z=6.6-7.0$ (60 Myr) at the faint end and $\times$2.0 (3.8) at $z=7.0-7.3$ (40 Myr). Also, in addition to the systematic decrease in EW at $z=5.7-6.6$ previously found, 2/3 of the $z=7.0$ LAEs detected in the UV continuum exhibit lower EWs than the $z=6.6$ ones. Moreover, while the UV LF and density do not evolve at $z=5.7-6.6$, they modestly decline at $z=6.6-7.0$, implying galaxy evolution contributing to the decline of the Ly$\alpha$ LF. Comparison of the $z=7.0$ Ly$\alpha$ LF to the one predicted by an LAE evolution model further reveals that galaxy evolution alone cannot explain all the decline of Ly$\alpha$ LF. If we attribute the discrepancy to Ly$\alpha$ attenuation by neutral hydrogen, the intergalactic medium transmission of Ly$\alpha$ photons at $z=7.0$ would be $T_{{\rm Ly}\alpha}^{\rm IGM} \leq 0.6-0.7$. The Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) is a three-layered imaging survey aimed at addressing some of the most outstanding questions in astronomy today, including the nature of dark matter and dark energy. The survey has been awarded 300 nights of observing time at the Subaru Telescope and it started in March 2014. This paper presents the first public data release of HSC-SSP. This release includes data taken in the first 1.7 years of observations (61.5 nights) and each of the Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep layers covers about 108, 26, and 4 square degrees down to depths of i~26.4, ~26.5, and ~27.0 mag, respectively (5sigma for point sources). All the layers are observed in five broad bands (grizy), and the Deep and UltraDeep layers are observed in narrow bands as well. We achieve an impressive image quality of 0.6 arcsec in the i-band in the Wide layer. We show that we achieve 1-2 per cent PSF photometry (rms) both internally and externally (against Pan-STARRS1), and ~10 mas and 40 mas internal and external astrometric accuracy, respectively. Both the calibrated images and catalogs are made available to the community through dedicated user interfaces and database servers. In addition to the pipeline products, we also provide value-added products such as photometric redshifts and a collection of public spectroscopic redshifts. We report the results of optical--infrared follow-up observations of the gravitational wave (GW) event GW151226 detected by the Advanced LIGO in the framework of J-GEM (Japanese collaboration for Gravitational wave ElectroMagnetic follow-up). We performed wide-field optical imaging surveys with Kiso Wide Field Camera (KWFC), Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), and MOA-cam3. The KWFC survey started at 2.26 days after the GW event and covered 778 deg$^2$ centered at the high Galactic region of the skymap of GW151226. We started the HSC follow-up observations from 12 days after the event and covered an area of 63.5 deg$^2$ of the highest probability region of the northern sky with the limiting magnitudes of 24.6 and 23.8 for i band and z band, respectively. MOA-cam3 covered 145 deg$^2$ of the skymap with MOA-red filter 2.5 months after the GW alert. Total area covered by the wide-field surveys was 986.5 deg$^2$. The integrated detection probability of all the observed area was $\sim$29%. We also performed galaxy-targeted observations with six optical and near-infrared telescopes from 1.61 days after the event. Total of 238 nearby (<100 Mpc) galaxies were observed with the typical I band limiting magnitude of $\sim$19.5. We detected 13 supernova candidates with the KWFC survey, and 60 extragalactic transients with the HSC survey. Two third of the HSC transients were likely supernovae and the remaining one third were possible active galactic nuclei. We study the extent to which very bright (-23.0 < MUV < -21.75) Lyman-break selected galaxies at redshifts z~7 display detectable Lya emission. To explore this issue, we have obtained follow-up optical spectroscopy of 9 z~7 galaxies from a parent sample of 24 z~7 galaxy candidates selected from the 1.65 sq.deg COSMOS-UltraVISTA and SXDS-UDS survey fields using the latest near-infrared public survey data, and new ultra-deep Subaru z'-band imaging (which we also present and describe in this paper). Our spectroscopy has yielded only one possible detection of Lya at z=7.168 with a rest-frame equivalent width EW_0 = 3.7 (+1.7/-1.1) Angstrom. The relative weakness of this line, combined with our failure to detect Lya emission from the other spectroscopic targets allows us to place a new upper limit on the prevalence of strong Lya emission at these redshifts. For conservative calculation and to facilitate comparison with previous studies at lower redshifts, we derive a 1-sigma upper limit on the fraction of UV bright galaxies at z~7 that display EW_0 > 50 Angstrom, which we estimate to be < 0.23. This result may indicate a weak trend where the fraction of strong Lya emitters ceases to rise, and possibly falls between z~6 and z~7. Our results also leave open the possibility that strong Lya may still be more prevalent in the brightest galaxies in the reionization era than their fainter counterparts. A larger spectroscopic sample of galaxies is required to derive a more reliable constraint on the neutral hydrogen fraction at z~7 based on the Lya fraction in the bright galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Cluster star-forming galaxies are found to have an excess of Far-Infrared emission relative to H-alpha (Ha), when compared to those in the field, which could be caused by intense AGN activity, dust and/or declining star formation histories. Here we present spectroscopic observations of Ha emitters in the Cl 0939+4713 (Abell 851) super-cluster at z=0.41, using AF2+WYFFOS on the WHT. We measure [OII], Hbeta (Hb), [OIII], Ha and [NII] for a sample of 119 Ha emitters in and around the cluster. We find that 17+-5% of the Ha emitters are AGN, irrespective of environment. For star-forming galaxies, we obtain Balmer decrements, metallicities and ionisation parameters with different methods, individually and by stacking. We find a strong mass-metallicity relation at all environments, with no significant dependence on environment. The ionisation parameter declines with increasing stellar mass for low-mass galaxies. Ha emitters residing in intermediate environments show the highest ionisation parameters (along with high [OIII]/Ha and high [OIII]/[OII] line ratios, typically twice as large as in the highest and lowest densities), which decline with increasing environmental density. Dust extinction (A$_{H\alpha}$) correlates strongly with stellar mass, but also with environmental density. Star-forming galaxies in the densest environments are found to be significantly dustier (A$_{H\alpha}$~1.5-1.6) than those residing in the lowest density environments (A$_{H\alpha}$~0.6), deviating significantly from what would be predicted given their stellar masses., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 13 pages, 11 figures

We present the photometric properties of a sample of infrared (IR) bright dust obscured galaxies (DOGs). Combining wide and deep optical images obtained with the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru Telescope and all-sky mid-IR (MIR) images taken with Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), we discovered 48 DOGs with $i - K_\mathrm{s} > 1.2$ and $i - [22] > 7.0$, where $i$, $K_\mathrm{s}$, and [22] represent AB magnitude in the $i$-band, $K_\mathrm{s}$-band, and 22 $\mu$m, respectively, in the GAMA 14hr field ($\sim$ 9 deg$^2$). Among these objects, 31 ($\sim$ 65 %) show power-law spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the near-IR (NIR) and MIR regime, while the remainder show a NIR bump in their SEDs. Assuming that the redshift distribution for our DOGs sample is Gaussian, with mean and sigma $z$ = 1.99 $\pm$ 0.45, we calculated their total IR luminosity using an empirical relation between 22 $\mu$m luminosity and total IR luminosity. The average value of the total IR luminosity is (3.5 $\pm$ 1.1) $\times$ $10^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$, which classifies them as hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs). We also derived the total IR luminosity function (LF) and IR luminosity density (LD) for a flux-limited subsample of 18 DOGs with 22 $\mu$m flux greater than 3.0 mJy and with $i$-band magnitude brighter than 24 AB magnitude. The derived space density for this subsample is log $\phi$ = -6.59 $\pm$ 0.11 [Mpc$^{-3}$]. The IR LF for DOGs including data obtained from the literature is well fitted by a double-power law. The derived lower limit for the IR LD for our sample is $\rho_{\mathrm{IR}}$ $\sim$ 3.8 $\times$ 10$^7$ [L$_{\odot}$ Mpc$^{-3}$] and its contributions to the total IR LD, IR LD of all ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), and that of all DOGs are $>$ 3 %, $>$ 9 %, and $>$ 15 %, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, and 3 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ (Subaru special issue)

We present properties of moderately massive clusters of galaxies detected by the newly developed Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope using weak gravitational lensing. Eight peaks exceeding a S/N ratio of 4.5 are identified on the convergence S/N map of a 2.3 square degree field observed during the early commissioning phase of the camera. Multi-color photometric data is used to generate optically selected clusters using the CAMIRA algorithm. The optical cluster positions were correlated with the peak positions from the convergence map. All eight significant peaks have optical counterparts. The velocity dispersion of clusters are evaluated by adopting the Singular Isothemal Sphere (SIS) fit to the tangential shear profiles, yielding virial mass estimates, M500c, of the clusters which range from 2.7x10^13 to 4.4x10^14 solar mass. The number of peaks is considerably larger than the average number expected from LambdaCDM cosmology but this is not extremely unlikely if one takes the large sample variance in the small field into account. We could, however, safely argue that the peak count strongly favours the recent Planck result suggesting high sigma8$value of 0.83. The ratio of stellar mass to the dark matter halo mass shows a clear decline as the halo mass increases. If the gas mass fraction, fg, in halos is universal, as has been suggested in the literature, the observed baryon mass in stars and gas shows a possible deficit compared with the total baryon density estimated from the baryon oscillation peaks in anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, ApJ in press

We present our discovery of dramatic variability in SDSS J1100+4421 by the high-cadence transient survey Kiso Supernova Survey (KISS). The source brightened in the optical by at least a factor of three within about half a day. Spectroscopic observations suggest that this object is likely a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) at z=0.840, however with unusually strong narrow emission lines. The estimated black hole mass of ~ 10^7 Msun implies bolometric nuclear luminosity close to the Eddington limit. SDSS J1100+4421 is also extremely radio-loud, with a radio loudness parameter of R ~ 4 x 10^2 - 3 x 10^3, which implies the presence of relativistic jets. Rapid and large-amplitude optical variability of the target, reminiscent of that found in a few radio- and gamma-ray loud NLS1s, is therefore produced most likely in a blazar-like core. The 1.4 GHz radio image of the source shows an extended structure with a linear size of about 100 kpc. If SDSS J1100+4421 is a genuine NLS1, as suggested here, this radio structure would then be the largest ever discovered in this type of active galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The Kiso Supernova Survey (KISS) is a high-cadence optical wide-field supernova (SN) survey. The primary goal of the survey is to catch the very early light of a SN, during the shock breakout phase. Detection of SN shock breakouts combined with multi-band photometry obtained with other facilities would provide detailed physical information on the progenitor stars of SNe. The survey is performed using a 2.2x2.2 deg field-of-view instrument on the 1.05-m Kiso Schmidt telescope, the Kiso Wide Field Camera (KWFC). We take a three-minute exposure in g-band once every hour in our survey, reaching magnitude g~20-21. About 100 nights of telescope time per year have been spent on the survey since April 2012. The number of the shock breakout detections is estimated to be of order of 1 during our 3-year project. Metal absorption systems are products of star formation. They are believed to be associated with massive star forming galaxies, which have significantly enriched their surroundings. To test this idea with high column density CIV absorption systems at z~5.7, we study the projected distribution of galaxies and characterise the environment of CIV systems in two independent quasar lines-of-sight: J103027.01+052455.0 and J113717.73+354956.9. Using wide field photometry (~80x60h$^{-1}$ comoving Mpc), we select bright (Muv(1350\AA)<-21.0 mag.) Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z~5.7 in a redshift slice \Delta z~0.2 and we compare their projected distribution with z~5.7 narrow-band selected Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs, \Delta z~0.08). We find that the CIV systems are located more than 10h$^{-1}$ projected comoving Mpc from the main concentrations of LBGs and no candidate is closer than ~5h$^{-1}$ projected comoving Mpc. In contrast, an excess of LAEs -lower mass galaxies- is found on scales of ~10h$^{-1}$ comoving Mpc, suggesting that LAEs are the primary candidates for the source of the CIV systems. Furthermore, the closest object to the system in the field J1030+0524 is a faint LAE at a projected distance of 212h$^{-1}$ physical kpc. However, this work cannot rule out undiscovered lower mass galaxies as the origin of these absorption systems. We conclude that, in contrast with lower redshift examples (z<3.5), strong CIV absorption systems at z~5.7 trace low-to-intermediate density environments dominated by low-mass galaxies. Moreover, the excess of LAEs associated with high levels of ionizing flux agrees with the idea that faint galaxies dominate the ionizing photon budget at this redshift., Comment: 38 pages, 23 figures, 9 tables. From deep H-alpha imaging data of Suprime-Cam/Subaru, we discovered nine extended ionized gas clouds (EIG) around galaxies in Abell 851 cluster (A851) at z=0.4. We surveyed 30 x 25 arcmin region, and the EIGs were found only near the cluster center (<2.3 arcmin ~ 750 kpc). The parent galaxies of the EIGs are star-forming or post-starburst galaxies, all of which are spectroscopically confirmed members of the cluster. Four out of the nine parent galaxies show distortion of stellar distribution in the disk, which can be a sign of recent interaction, and the interaction may have made EIGs. On the other hand, six parent galaxies (one overlaps those exhibiting distortion) show H-alpha emission without stars, which implies a ram pressure stripping.The spe ctrum of the brightest parent galaxy shows a post-starburst signature, and resembles the H-alpha stripped galaxies found in the Coma cluster. Meanwhile, two brightest parent galaxies in A851 are more massive than the EIG parent galaxies in the Coma cluster. This is consistent with "downsizing" of star-forming galaxies, though it is still in a statistical fluctuation. We also analyzed Suprime-Cam data of another z=0.39 cluster, CL0024+17, but found no EIGs. This paper discusses the evolution of the correlation between galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) and stellar mass (M*) over the last ~10 Gyrs, particularly focusing on its environmental dependence. We first present the mid-infrared (MIR) properties of the H-alpha-selected galaxies in a rich cluster Cl0939+4713 at z=0.4. With a MIR stacking analysis, we find that the median SFR of H-alpha emitters is higher in higher-density environment at z=0.4. We also find that star-forming galaxies in high-density environment tend to have higher specific SFR (SSFR), although the trend is much less significant compared to that of SFR. This increase of SSFR in high-density environment is not visible when we consider the SFR derived from H-alpha alone, suggesting that the dust attenuation in galaxies depends on environment; galaxies in high-density environment tend to be dustier (by up to ~0.5 mag). We then discuss the environmental dependence of the SFR-M* relation for star-forming galaxies since z~2, by compiling our comparable, narrow-band selected, large H-alpha emitter samples in both distant cluster environments (from MAHALO-Subaru) and field environments (from HiZELS). We find that the SSFR of H-alpha-selected galaxies (at the fixed mass of log(M*/Msun)=10) rapidly evolves as (1+z)^3, but the SFR-M* relation is independent of the environment since z~2, as far as we rely on the H-alpha-based SFRs (with M*-dependent extinction correction). Even if we consider the possible environmental variation in the dust attenuation, we conclude that the difference in the SFR-M* relation between cluster and field star-forming galaxies is always small (~<0.2dex level) at any time in the history of the Universe since z~2. We present photometric recalibration of the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) and Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS). Recently, Yamanoi et al. (2012) suggested the existence of a discrepancy between the SDF and SXDS catalogs. We have used the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8 (DR8) catalog and compared stars in common between SDF/SXDS and SDSS. We confirmed that there exists a 0.12 mag offset in B-band between the SDF and SXDS catalogs. Moreover, we found that significant zero point offsets in i-band (~ 0.10 mag) and z-band (~ 0.14 mag) need to be introduced to the SDF/SXDS catalogs to make it consistent with the SDSS catalog. We report the measured zero point offsets of five filter bands of SDF/SXDS catalogs. We confirm the detection of 3 groups in the Lynx supercluster, at z~1.3, and give their redshifts and masses. We study the properties of the group galaxies as compared to the central clusters, RXJ0849+4452 and RXJ0848+4453, selecting 89 galaxies in the clusters and 74 galaxies in the groups. We morphologically classify galaxies by visual inspection, noting that our early-type galaxy (ETG) sample would have been contaminated at the 30% -40% level by simple automated classification methods (e.g. based on Sersic index). In luminosity selected samples, both clusters and groups show high fractions of Sa galaxies. The ETG fractions never rise above ~50% in the clusters, which is low compared to the fractions observed in clusters at z~1. However, ETG plus Sa fractions are similar to those observed for ETGs in clusters at z~1. Bulge-dominated galaxies visually classified as Sas might also be ETGs with tidal features or merger remnants. They are mainly red and passive, and span a large range in luminosity. Their star formation seems to have been quenched before experiencing a morphological transformation. Because their fraction is smaller at lower redshifts, they might be the spiral population that evolves into ETGs. For mass-selected samples, the ETG fraction show no significant evolution with respect to local clusters, suggesting that morphological transformations occur at lower masses and densities. The ETG mass-size relation shows evolution towards smaller sizes at higher redshift in both clusters and groups, while the late-type mass-size relation matches that observed locally. The group ETG red sequence shows lower zero points and larger scatters than in clusters, both expected to be an indication of a younger galaxy population. We present a wide-field H-alpha imaging survey of the rich cluster CL0939+4713 (Abell 851) at z=0.41 with Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope, using the narrow-band filter NB921. The survey is sensitive to active galaxies with star formation rates down to ~0.3Msun/yr throughout the 27'x27' field, and we identified 445 H-alpha emitters along the large-scale structures around the cluster. Using this sample, we find that (1) the fraction of H-alpha emitters is a strong function of environment and shows a clear decline toward the cluster central region. We also find that (2) the color of H-alpha emitters is clearly dependent on environment. The majority of the H-alpha emitters have blue colors with B-I<2, but we find H-alpha emitters with red colors as well. Such red emitters are very rare in the cluster center or its immediate surrounding regions, while they are most frequently found in groups located far away from the cluster center. These groups coincide with the environment where a sharp transition in galaxy color distribution is seen. This may suggest that dusty star formation activity tends to be involved in galaxy truncation processes that are effective in groups, and it is probably related to the "pre-processing" that generates present-day cluster S0 galaxies. Finally, we confirm that (3) the mass-normalized integrated star formation rate in clusters (i.e. the total star formation rate within 0.5xR200 from the cluster center divided by the cluster dynamical mass) rapidly increases with look-back time following approximately ~(1+z)^6, and it is also correlated with the cluster mass., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We carried out a wide-field V, I imaging survey of the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo II using the Subaru Prime Focus Camera on the 8.2-m Subaru Telescope. The survey covered an area of 26.67 x 26.67 arcmin^2, far beyond the tidal radius of Leo II (8.63 arcmin), down to the limiting magnitude of V ~26, which is roughly 1 mag deeper than the turn-off point of the main sequence stars of Leo II. Radial number density profiles of bright and faint red giant branch (RGB) stars were found to change their slopes at around the tidal radius, and extend beyond the tidal radius with shallower slopes. A smoothed surface brightness map of Leo II suggests the existence of a small substructure of globular cluster luminosity beyond the tidal radius. We investigated the properties of the stellar population by means of the color-magnitude diagram. The horizontal branch (HB) morphology index shows a radial gradient in which red HB stars are more concentrated than blue HB stars, which is common to many Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The color distribution of RGB stars around the mean RGB sequence shows a larger dispersion at the center than in the outskirts, indicating a mixture of stellar populations at the center and a more homogeneous population in the outskirts. Based on the age estimation using subgiant branch (SGB) stars, we found that although the major star formation took place ~8 Gyr ago, a considerable stellar population younger than 8 Gyr is found at the center; such a younger population is insignificant in the outskirts., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

We report the discovery of a probable large scale structure composed of many galaxy clumps around the known twin clusters at z=1.26 and z=1.27 in the Lynx region. Our analysis is based on deep, panoramic, and multi-colour imaging (26.4'x24.1') in VRi'z'-bands with the Suprime-Cam on the 8.2m Subaru telescope. This unique, deep and wide-field imaging data-set allows us for the first time to map out the galaxy distribution in the highest redshift supercluster known. We apply a photometric redshift technique to extract plausible cluster members at z~1.27 down to i'=26.15 (5sigma) corresponding to \~M*+2.5 at this redshift. From the 2-D distribution of these photometrically selected galaxies, we newly identify seven candidates of galaxy groups or clusters where the surface density of red galaxies is significantly high (>5sigma), in addition to the two known clusters. These candidates show clear red colour-magnitude sequences consistent with a passive evolution model, which suggests the existence of additional high density regions around the Lynx superclusters., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the evolution of the star formation rate in cluster galaxies. We complement data from the CNOC1 cluster survey (0.15

We employ panoramic, multicolour (BRz') and narrow-band Halpha imaging of the cluster Cl0024.0+1652 (z=0.39) from Subaru covering a ~30 arcmin field, to determine cluster membership and star formation rates for a large sample of galaxies across a wide field in the cluster, ~10 Mpc. We detect over 500 galaxies in narrow-band emission, with broad-band colours consistent with them lying at z~0.39. Using this sample we determine the Halpha luminosity function within the cluster and find that its form is approximately independent of local density, and is consistent with that seen in the intermediate redshift field population. This suggests that any density-dependent physical mechanisms which alter the star formation rate must leave the Halpha luminosity function unchanged; this is possible if the time-scale for star formation to cease completely is short compared with a Hubble time. Such short time-scale transformations are also supported by the presence of a population with late-type morphologies but no detectable Halpha emission. The fraction of blue galaxies, and the fraction of galaxies detected in Halpha, decreases strongly with increasing galaxy density in a manner which is qualitatively similar to that seen at lower redshifts. This trend is significantly steeper than the trend with galaxy morphology observed from a panoramic Hubble Space Telescope image of this cluster; this suggests that the physical mechanisms responsible for transformations in morphology and star formation rates may be partially independent. Finally, we compare our data with similar data on clusters spanning a range of redshifts from 0.2<~z<~0.8 and find little evidence for a trend in the total amount of star formation in clusters with redshift., Comment: 18 pages, 25 figures (of which 2 are provided in jpg format), uses mn2e.cls. We have built an 80-mega pixels (10240 X 8192) mosaic CCD camera, called Suprime-Cam, for the wide-field prime focus of the 8.2 m Subaru telescope. Suprime-Cam covers a field of view 34' X 27', a unique facility among the the 8-10 m class telescopes, with a resolution of 0.''202 per pixel. The focal plane consists of ten high-resistivity 2k X 4k CCDs developed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory, which are cooled by a large stirling-cycle cooler. The CCD readout electronics was designed to be scalable, which allows the multiple read-out of tens of CCDs. It takes 50 seconds to readout entire arrays. We designed a filter-exchange mechanism of the jukebox type that can hold up to ten large filters (205 X 170 X 15 mm^3). The wide-field corrector is basically a three-lens Wynne-type, but has a new type of atmospheric dispersion corrector. The corrector provides a flat focal plane and an un-vignetted field of view of 30' in diameter. The achieved co-planarity of the focal array mosaic is smaller than 30 micron peak-to-peak, which realizes mostly the seeing limited image over the entire field. The median seeing in the Ic-band, measured over one year and a half, is 0.''61. The PSF anisotropy in Suprime-Cam images, estimated by stellar ellipticities, is about 2% under this median seeing condition. We present the results of a survey for emission-line objects based on optical intermediate-band ($\lambda_{\rm c}$ = 5736 \AA ~ and $\Delta\lambda$ = 280 \AA) and broad-band ($B$, $V$, $R$, and $i^\prime$) observations of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope with the Subaru Prime Focus Camera, Suprime-Cam. All the data were obtained during the guaranteed time observations of the Suprime-Cam instrument. The intermediate-band image covered a sky area with 10\minpoint62 $\times 12\minpoint40 \approx 132$ arcmin$^2$ in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (Ouchi et al.). Using this image, we have found 23 emission-line sources whose observed emission-line equivalent widths are greater than 250 \AA. Their optical multicolor properties indicate that six emission-line sources are Ly$\alpha$ emitters at $z \approx$ 3.7 ($\Delta z \approx 0.22$). They are either intense starburst galaxies or active galactic nuclei like quasars at $z \approx$ 3.7. Two more emission-line sources may also be Ly$\alpha$ emitters at $z \approx$ 3.7 although their multicolor properties are marginal. Among the remaining 15 emission-line objects, eight objects appear strong emission-line galaxies at lower redshift; e.g., [O {\sc ii}] $\lambda$3727 emitters at $z \approx 0.54$, H$\beta$ at $z \approx 0.18$, or [O {\sc iii}]$\lambda$5007 emitters at $z \approx 0.15$. The remaining seven objects are unclassified because they are too faint to be detected in broad-band images. We discuss observational properties of these strong emission-line sources. We have constructed a very deep K'-selected multicolor BVRIz'JK' sample of 439 field galaxies. Photometric redshifts for sample galaxies were estimated. The overall redshift distribution N(z) for the K'<21.0 sample is consistent with previous observations, and for the first time we derive the N(z) down to K'=24.0. After taking account of the dust extinction and selection effects of the sample, the observed N(z) distribution is well described with the PLE model, while the hierarchical galaxy formation model shows an apparent deficiency of galaxies especially at z>2. The photometric redshift and the best-fit SED model evaluations allow the derivation of the rest-frame K', B, and UV(2000A) luminosity functions (LFs) and their evolutions. The rest-K' LF shows almost no evolution up to z=3, while the rest B LF shows mild luminosity evolution, and the rest UV LF shows strong luminosity evolution. This trend corresponds to the evolution of the rest UV-K' color, which gets bluer with increasing redshift. We also found that more massive galaxies are redder in this rest-frame color in every epoch. The rest-UV LF of our K'-selected galaxies shows a much shallower faint end slope at z=3 than that of previous estimations for rest-UV selected Lyman break galaxies. As a consequence, the contribution to the global star formation rate of our K'-selected galaxies is about 42% of that derived from the integration of LF of Lyman break galaxies at z=3. This result suggests that a large fraction of the star formation rate density at z>1.5 comes from the contribution from the faint (M_2000A>-20) blue galaxy population at high redshift universe that have not yet obviously been identified. We discuss the properties of galaxies around the radio galaxy 3C 324 at z=1.2 based on BVRIK' multi-band imaging data. We have applied a photometric-redshift technique to objects in the 3C 324 field, and identified 35 objects as plausible cluster members. We have found that red and luminous members are concentrated in a small region enclosed by a circle of 40" radius (0.33 Mpc at z=1.2 for \Omega_0=0.3, \lambda_0=0.7, H_0=70km/s/Mpc cosmology) from the 3C 324 galaxy. The 3C 324 cluster is probably much more compact in size compared with the local clusters. We constructed a K'-band luminosity function of the cluster members and fit a Schechter function, and found the characteristic magnitude to be K*_{AB}=20.2+-0.6. This value is consistent with the extrapolation of the pure passive evolution seen for z<1 clusters. We have identified eight bright galaxies which form a red color-magnitude sequence. The slope of the sequence is consistent with the passive evolution model down to K'_{AB}<22; we also found that there is no clear age variation in these bright red galaxies. However, seven out of these eight galaxies exhibit a significant excess in the rest UV light with respect to the passive evolution model. This may suggest that the massive early-type galaxies in this high-redshift cluster are still forming stars to some extent. We have confirmed a truncation of the color-magnitude sequence at K'_{AB}\sim22; faint passively-evolving galaxies may not yet be present in this cluster at z\sim1.2. The overall color distribution of the cluster members, selected by the photometric redshift technique, is found to be very broad. We found a very large, 35 kpc, emission-line region around the Seyfert type 2 galaxy NGC 4388, using deep narrow-band imaging with the prime focus camera (Suprime-Cam) of the Subaru telescope. This region consists of many faint gas clouds or filaments, and extends northeastwards from the galaxy. The typical H-alpha luminosity L(H-alpha) of the clouds is 10^37 erg s^-1, and the total L(H-alpha) of the region within 10 kpc from the nucleus is 2 x 10^38 erg s^-1, which corresponds to an ionized gas mass of 10^5 M_solar. The map of the emission-line intensity ratio I([OIII])/I(H-alpha) indicates that the inner (r < 12 kpc) region of the VEELR may be excited by nuclear ionizing radiation. The excitation mechanism of the outer (r > 12 kpc) region is unclear, but it is likely that the nuclear radiation is also a dominant source of its ionization. We discuss the origin of the ionized gas. Two plausible origins of the gas in the VEELR are (i) the tidal debris resulting from a past interaction with a gas-rich dwarf galaxy, i.e., a minor merger, or (ii) the interstellar medium of NGC 4388, stripped by the ram pressure of the hot intracluster medium of the Virgo cluster., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepted

We study the luminosity function and the correlation function of about 1200 z~4 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) with i'<26 that are photometrically selected from deep BRi' imaging data of a 618 arcmin^2 area in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field taken with Subaru Prime Focus Camera. The contamination and completeness of our LBG sample are evaluated, on the basis of the Hubble Deep Field-North (HDF-N) objects, to be 17% and 45%, respectively. We derive the UV (rest 1700A) luminosity functions (LFs) and find a large population of UV-luminous galaxies at z~4. The LFs of the red and blue subsamples imply that the bright LBGs are redder in the UV continuum than the average color of the LBGs. Then we calculate the correlation function over theta = 2''-1000'' and find that it is fitted fairly well by a power law, omega(theta)=A_omega theta^(-0.8), with A_omega=0.71 +/- 0.26. We estimate the correlation length r_0 (in comoving units) of the two-point spatial correlation function xi(r) = (r/r_0)^(-1.8) to be r_0=2.7 +0.5/-0.6 h^(-1) Mpc (Omega_m=0.3 and Omega_Lambda=0.7). The correlation function shows an excess of omega (theta) on small scales (theta < 5''), departing from the power-law fit at > 3 sigma significance level. Interpreting this as being due to galaxy mergers, we evaluate the fraction of galaxies undergoing mergers to be 3.0 +/- 0.9%, which is significantly smaller than those of galaxies at intermediate redshifts., Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the Marseille 2001 conference "Where is the Matter? We study the clustering properties of about 1200 z~4 Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidates with i'<26 which are selected by color from deep BRi' imaging data of a 618 arcmin^2 area in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field taken with Subaru Prime Focus Camera. The contamination and completeness of our LBG sample are evaluated, on the basis of the Hubble Deep Field North (HDFN) objects, to be 17% and 45%, respectively. We derive the angular correlation function over theta = 2''-1000'', and find that it is fitted fairly well by a power law, omega(theta)=A_omega theta^{-0.8}, with A_omega = 0.71 +/- 0.26. We then calculate the correlation length r0 (in comoving units) of the two-point spatial correlation function xi(r) = (r/r0)^{-1.8} from A_omega using the redshift distribution of LBGs derived from the HDFN, and find r0=2.7 (+0.5/-0.6) h^{-1} Mpc in a Lambda-dominated universe (Omega_m=0.3 and Omega_Lambda=0.7). This is twice larger than the correlation length of the dark matter at z~4 predicted from an analytic model by Peacock & Dodds but about twice smaller than that of bright galaxies predicted by a semi-analytic model of Baugh et al. We find an excess of omega(theta) on small scales (theta < 5'') departing from the power law fit over 3 sigma significance levels. Interpreting this as due to galaxy mergers, we estimate the fraction of galaxies undergoing mergers in our LBG sample to be 3.0 +/- 0.9%, which is significantly smaller than those of galaxies at intermediate redshifts., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, to be published in ApJ Letters

We investigate pure luminosity evolution models for early-type (elliptical and S0) galaxies (i.e., no number density change or morphology transition), and examine whether these models are consistent with observed number counts in the B, I and K bands and redshift distributions of two samples of faint galaxies selected in the I and K bands. The models are characterized by the star formation time scale $\tau_{SF}$ and the time $t_{gw}$ when galactic wind blows in addition to several other conventional parameters. We find the single-burst model ($\tau_{SF}$=0.1 Gyr and $t_{gw}$=0.353 Gyr), which is known to reproduce the photometric properties of early-type galaxies in clusters, is inconsistent with redshift distributions of early-type galaxies in the field environment due to overpredictions of galaxies at $z\gsim1.4$ even with strong extinction which is at work until $t_{gw}$. In order for dust extinction to be more effective, we change $\tau_{SF}$ and $t_{gw}$ as free parameters, and find that models with $\tau_{SF}\gsim0.5$ Gyr and $t_{gw}>1.0$ Gyr can be made consistent with both the observed redshift distributions and number counts, if we introduce strong extinction $(E(B-V)\geq1$ as a peak value).
