Abstract

On September 26, 2022, NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission successfully impacted Dimorphos, the natural satellite of the binary near-Earth asteroid (65803) Didymos. Numerical simulations of the impact provide a means to explore target surface material properties and structures, consistent with the observed momentum deflection efficiency, ejecta cone geometry, and ejected mass. Our simulation, which best matches observations, indicates that Dimorphos is weak, with a cohesive strength of less than a few pascals (Pa), similar to asteroids (162173) Ryugu and (101955) Bennu. We find that a bulk density of Dimorphos, rhoB, lower than 2400 kg/m3, and a low volume fraction of boulders (<40 vol%) on the surface and in the shallow subsurface, are consistent with measured data from the DART experiment. These findings suggest Dimorphos is a rubble pile that might have formed through rotational mass shedding and re-accumulation from Didymos. Our simulations indicate that the DART impact caused global deformation and resurfacing of Dimorphos. ESA's upcoming Hera mission may find a re-shaped asteroid, rather than a well-defined crater.

Although combined multiple causes of intractable pruritus in these patients have been identified, no existing treatments are proven to be sufficiently effective. We conducted a post-marketing surveillance to follow-up and assess the safety and efficacy of nalfurafine, a selective κ-opioid receptor agonist, for the treatment of intractable pruritus in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Patients and methods: Hemodialysis patients with intractable pruritus from institutions in Japan who received oral nalfurafine hydrochloride between January 2010 and December 2013 were enrolled in the surveillance. Surveillance was completed in July 2015. Safety data during 1 year after nalfurafine treatment onset, and efficacy data of nalfurafine evaluating the first 12-week treatment period and the following period until 1 year after the initial dose of nalfurafine (using global assessment of the itch improvement by the physician, Visual Analog Scale, and the Shiratori’s severity scores) were collected and analyzed. Results: In total, 3,762 patients were analyzed for safety. Adverse drug reactions were experienced by 402/3,762 (10.69%) patients. The most frequent adverse drug reactions were insomnia (127/3,762 [3.38%] patients), constipation (34 [0.90%]), somnolence (32 [0.85%]), dizziness (23 [0.61%]), nausea (13 [0.35%]), and malaise (9 [0.24%]). No patients developed dependence on nalfurafine. Nalfurafine was effective in 82.50% (2,880/3,491) of patients during the first 12 weeks and in 84.95% (2,167/2,551) on treatment during the subsequent period until 1 year after nalfurafine treatment initiation. Abstract

LiteBIRD, the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with an expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA's H3 rocket. LiteBIRD is planned to orbit the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2, where it will map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the entire sky for three years, with three telescopes in 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz, to achieve an unprecedented total sensitivity of 2.2$\mu$K-arcmin, with a typical angular resolution of 0.5$^\circ$ at 100 GHz. The primary scientific objective of LiteBIRD is to search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. Abstract

A methodology to provide the polarization angle requirements for different sets of detectors, at a given frequency of a CMB polarization experiment, is presented. The uncertainties in the polarization angle of each detector set are related to a given bias on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ parameter. The approach is grounded in using a linear combination of the detector sets to obtain the CMB polarization signal. In addition, assuming that the uncertainties on the polarization angle are in the small angle limit (lower than a few degrees), it is possible to derive analytic expressions to establish the requirements. The methodology also accounts for possible correlations among detectors, that may originate from the optics, wafers, etc. The approach is applied to the LiteBIRD space mission. We show that, for the most restrictive case (i.e., full correlation of the polarization angle systematics among detector sets), the requirements on the polarization angle uncertainties are of around 1 arcmin at the most sensitive frequency bands (i.e., $\approx 150$ GHz) and of few tens of arcmin at the lowest (i.e., $\approx 40$ GHz) and highest (i.e., $\approx 400$ GHz) observational bands. Conversely, for the least restrictive case (i.e., no correlation of the polarization angle systematics among detector sets), the requirements are $\approx 5$ times less restrictive than for the previous scenario. At the global and the telescope levels, polarization angle knowledge of a few arcmins is sufficient for correlated global systematic errors and can be relaxed by a factor of two for fully uncorrelated errors in detector polarization angle. Abstract

LiteBIRD is a future satellite mission designed to observe the polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation in order to probe the inflationary universe. LiteBIRD is set to observe the sky using three telescopes with transition-edge sensor bolometers. In this work we estimated the LiteBIRD instrumental sensitivity using its current design. We estimated the detector noise due to the optical loadings using physical optics and ray-tracing simulations. The noise terms associated with thermal carrier and readout noise were modeled in the detector noise calculation. We calculated the observational sensitivities over fifteen bands designed for the LiteBIRD telescopes using assumed observation time efficiency.

To achieve high-thrust-density operation, we propose electrostatic–magnetic hybrid ion acceleration in which the empirical thrust density limit of the electrostatic acceleration is surpassed without violent plasma oscillation by combing the collisional momentum transfer mechanism, which is the ion acceleration mechanism of the electromagnetic acceleration. To achieve hybrid ion acceleration, we experimentally obtained two design criteria: one near anode propellant injection and another at the on-axis hollow cathode location. The thrust characteristics of three thrusters composed of a slowly diverging magnetic field between an on-axis hollow cathode and a coaxially set ring anode were examined. By injecting xenon propellant along the anode inner surface, the electron impact ionization process was enhanced, and generated ions are electrostatically accelerated through the radial-inward potential gradient perpendicular to the axial magnetic lines of force. The hybrid ion acceleration characteristics were obtained only if these two criteria were satisfied and the obtained thrust was consistent with the thrust formula derived for steady-state, quasi-neutral plasma flows. In addition to the criteria, strengthening the magnetic field and enhancing the propellant mass flux were effective for improving thrust density without deteriorating thrust efficiency. Among the experimental conditions in this study, the maximum thrust density was 70 N/m2 with an anode specific impulse of 1200 s, which cannot be achieved in a purely electrostatic thruster with thrust density 6.3 times than that of a typical Hall thruster. Abstract

Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature

Abstract

A methodology to provide the polarization angle requirements for different sets of detectors, at a given frequency of a CMB polarization experiment, is presented. The uncertainties in the polarization angle of each detector set are related to a given bias on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r parameter. The approach is grounded in using a linear combination of the detector sets to obtain the CMB polarization signal. In addition, assuming that the uncertainties on the polarization angle are in the small angle limit (lower than a few degrees), it is possible to derive analytic expressions to establish the requirements. The methodology also accounts for possible correlations among detectors, that may originate from the optics, wafers, etc. The approach is applied to the LiteBIRD space mission. We show that, for the most restrictive case (i.e., full correlation of the polarization angle systematics among detector sets), the requirements on the polarization angle uncertainties are of around 1 arcmin at the most sensitive frequency bands (i.e., ≈ 150 GHz) and of few tens of arcmin at the lowest (i.e., ≈ 40 GHz) and highest (i.e., ≈ 400 GHz) observational bands. Conversely, for the least restrictive case (i.e., no correlation of the polarization angle systematics among detector sets), the requirements are ≈ 5 times less restrictive than for the previous scenario. At the global and the telescope levels, polarization angle knowledge of a few arcmins is sufficient for correlated global systematic errors and can be relaxed by a factor of two for fully uncorrelated errors in detector polarization angle. The reported uncertainty levels are needed in order to have the bias on r due to systematics below the limit established by the LiteBIRD collaboration.

Abstract

To achieve high-thrust-density operation, we propose electrostatic–magnetic hybrid ion acceleration in which the empirical thrust density limit of the electrostatic acceleration is surpassed without violent plasma oscillation by combing the collisional momentum transfer mechanism, which is the ion acceleration mechanism of the electromagnetic acceleration. To achieve hybrid ion acceleration, we experimentally obtained two design criteria: one near anode propellant injection and another at the on-axis hollow cathode location. The thrust characteristics of three thrusters composed of a slowly diverging magnetic field between an on-axis hollow cathode and a coaxially set ring anode were examined. By injecting xenon propellant along the anode inner surface, the electron impact ionization process was enhanced, and generated ions are electrostatically accelerated through the radial-inward potential gradient perpendicular to the axial magnetic lines of force. The hybrid ion acceleration characteristics were obtained only if these two criteria were satisfied and the obtained thrust was consistent with the thrust formula derived for steady-state, quasi-neutral plasma flows. In addition to the criteria, strengthening the magnetic field and enhancing the propellant mass flux were effective for improving thrust density without deteriorating thrust efficiency. Among the experimental conditions in this study, the maximum thrust density was 70 N/m^2 with an anode specific impulse of 1200 s, which cannot be achieved in a purely electrostatic thruster with thrust density 6.3 times than that of a typical Hall thruster.

42. Landscape of Participant-Centric Initiatives for Medical Research in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan: Scoping Review

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Information and communication technology (ICT) has made remarkable progress in recent years and is being increasingly applied to medical research. This technology has the potential to facilitate the active involvement of research participants. Digital platforms that enable participants to be involved in the research process are called participant-centric initiatives (PCIs). Several PCIs have been reported in the literature, but no scoping reviews have been carried out. Moreover, detailed methods and features to aid in developing a clear definition of PCIs have not been sufficiently elucidated to date. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review is to describe the recent trends in, and features of, PCIs across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan. METHODS: We applied a methodology suggested by Levac et al to conduct this scoping review. We searched electronic databases-MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online), Embase (Excerpta Medica Database), CINAHL (Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature), PsycINFO, and Ichushi-Web-and sources of grey literature, as well as internet search engines-Google and Bing. We hand-searched through key journals and reference lists of the relevant articles. Medical research using ICT was eligible for inclusion if there was a description of the active involvement of the participants. RESULTS: Ultimately, 21 PCIs were identified that have implemented practical methods and modes of various communication activities, such as patient forums and use of social media, in the field of medical research. Various methods of decision making that enable participants to become involved in setting the agenda were also evident. CONCLUSIONS: This scoping review is the first study to analyze the detailed features of PCIs and how they are being implemented. A new broadband tetrahertz (THz) radiation detector using a Nb-based superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) fabricated on LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 substrates is proposed. It is found that this detector can be used as a broad-band THz and far-infrared radiation detector above the frequency corresponding to the energy gap of the superconductor used for the base electrodes.

Abstract

An analytical model for the self-excited vibration of an overflow flexible weir as observed in the French demonstration fast breeder reactor, Super Phenix-1, is proposed. The instability condition was derived for the case in which the plate vibrates at the frequency of the downstream tank sloshing. In this analysis, the flexible plate weir is modeled as a simply supported-free-simply supported-clamped rectangular plate. Eigenfunction expansions were applied for analyzing both plate vibrations and the downstream tank sloshing. The effect of an overflow liquid is formulated based on the assumption that the momentum change due to the collision of an overflow liquid partly transmitted to the pressure rise on the free surface. As a result, the characteristic equation of the system yielding the theoretical stability boundary was obtained. The stability boundary thus derived agreed well with experimental results.
