We prove the precise inversion of adjunction formula for finite linear group quotients of complete intersection varieties defined by semi-invariant equations. As an application, we prove the semi-continuity of minimal log discrepancies for them. 6. Ehrhart theory on periodic graphs II: Stratified Ehrhart ring theory

Abstract

We investigate the "stratified Ehrhart ring theory" for periodic graphs, which gives an algorithm for determining the growth sequences of periodic graphs. The growth sequence $(s_{\Gamma, x_0, i})_{i \ge 0}$ is defined for a graph $\Gamma$ and its fixed vertex $x_0$, where $s_{\Gamma, x_0, i}$ is defined as the number of vertices of $\Gamma$ at distance $i$ from $x_0$. Although the sequences $(s_{\Gamma, x_0, i})_{i \ge 0}$ for periodic graphs are known to be of quasi-polynomial type, their determination had not been established, even in dimension two. Our theory and algorithm can be applied to arbitrary periodic graphs of any dimension. We give sufficient conditions for the growth sequences of periodic graphs to be a quasi-polynomial and to satisfy the reciprocity laws. Abstract

We prove a tropical analogue of the theorem of Hurwitz: a leafless metric graph of genus $g \ge 2$ has at most $12$ automorphisms when $g = 2$; $2^g g!$ automorphisms when $g \ge 3$. These inequalities are optimal; for each genus, we give all metric graphs which have the maximum numbers of automorphisms. Abstract

With the advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies, the fields of immunogenomics and adaptive immune receptor repertoire research are facing both opportunities and challenges. Adaptive immune receptor repertoire sequencing (AIRR-seq) has become an increasingly important tool to characterize T and B cell responses in settings of interest. However, the majority of AIRR-seq studies conducted so far were performed in individuals of European ancestry, restricting the ability to identify variation in human adaptive immune responses across populations and limiting their applications. As AIRR-seq studies depend on the ability to assign VDJ sequence reads to the correct germline gene segments, efforts to characterize the genomic loci that encode adaptive immune receptor genes in different populations are urgently needed. The availability of comprehensive germline gene databases and further applications of AIRR-seq studies to individuals of non-European ancestry will substantially enhance our understanding of human adaptive immune responses, promote the development of effective diagnostics and treatments, and eventually advance precision medicine., Comment: 22 pages,1 table

Abstract

We study the effects of general relativistic gravity on the Hill stability, that is, the stability of a multi-body system against a close approach of one orbit to another, which has been hitherto studied mainly in Newtonian mechanics and applied to planetary systems. We focus in this paper on the three-body problem and extend the Newtonian analyses to the general relativistic regime in the post-Newtonian approximation. The approximate sufficient condition for the relativistic Hill stability of three-body systems is derived analytically and its validity and usefulness are confirmed numerically. In fact, relativity makes the system more unstable than Newtonian mechanics in the sense of the Hill stability as expected by our theoretical prediction. Abstract

Cell-free synthetic biology is a maturing field that aims to assemble biomolecular reactions outside cells for compelling applications in drug discovery, metabolic engineering, biomanufacturing, diagnostics, and education. Cell-free systems have several key features. They circumvent mechanisms that have evolved to facilitate species survival, bypass limitations on molecular transport across the cell wall, enable high-yielding and rapid synthesis of proteins without creating recombinant cells, and provide high tolerance towards toxic substrates or products. Here, we analyze ~750 published patents and ~2000 peer-reviewed manuscripts in the field of cell-free systems. Three hallmarks emerged. First, we found that both patent filings and manuscript publications per year are significantly increasing (five-fold and 1.5-fold over the last decade, respectively). Second, we observed that the innovation landscape has changed. Patent applications were dominated by Japan in the early 2000s before shifting to China and the USA in recent years. Finally, we discovered an increasing prevalence of biotechnology companies using cell-free systems. Our analysis has broad implications on the future development of cell-free synthetic biology for commercial and industrial applications.

Abstract

We present the first experimental measurement of the ensemble averages of both the kinetic and interaction energies of the three-dimensional Bose--Hubbard model at finite temperature and various optical lattice depths across weakly to strongly interacting regimes, for an almost unit filling factor. The kinetic energy is obtained through Fourier transformation of a time-of-flight signal, and the interaction energy is measured using a newly developed atom-number-projection spectroscopy technique, by exploiting an ultra-narrow optical transition of two-electron atoms. The obtained experimental results can be used as benchmarks for state-of-the-art numerical methods of quantum many-body theory. As an illustrative example, we compare the measured energies with numerical calculations involving the Gutzwiller and cluster-Gutzwiller approximations, assuming realistic trap potentials and particle numbers at nonzero entropy (finite temperature); we obtain good agreement without fitting parameters. We also discuss the possible application of this method to temperature estimations for atoms in optical lattices using the thermodynamic relation. This study offers a unique advantage of cold atom system for `quantum simulators', because, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first experimental determination of both the kinetic and interaction energies of quantum many-body system., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures
