6. Intrinsic Spin Decay Length in Antiferromagnetic Insulator

Abstract

We report intrinsic spin decay length of an antiferromagnetic insulator. We found that at an antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic interface, a spin current generated by spin pumping is strongly suppressed by two-magnon scattering. By eliminating the two-magnon contribution, we discovered that the characteristic length of spin decay in NiO changes by two-orders of magnitude through the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition. The spin decay length in the antiferromagnetic state is longer than 100 nm, which is an order of magnitude longer than previously believed. These results provide a crucial piece of information for the fundamental understanding of the physics of spin transport.

Abstract

Background No consensus has been reached regarding the optimal chemotherapy for metastatic extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD), a rare cutaneous adenocarcinoma, because of the lack of solid evidence from prospective trials. However, the immunohistochemical profile of EMPD reportedly resembles that of breast cancer, particularly in terms of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression, suggesting that HER2 is a promising therapeutic target for advanced HER2-positive EMPD. Methods In this phase II single-arm trial, 13 Japanese patients received intravenous trastuzumab (loading dose of 8 mg/kg and maintenance dose of 6 mg/kg) and docetaxel (75 mg/m2) every 3 weeks for up to 2 years. The docetaxel dose was reduced or discontinued according to its toxicity. The primary trial endpoints were objective response rate (ORR) after 3 cycles of treatment and safety throughout the study period. Results All 13 patients completed 3 cycles of combination therapy. The median follow-up was 27.9 months. The ORR was 76.9% (n = 10/13; 90% CI, 50.5-93.4). Frequently observed adverse events were neutropenia (100%), hypoalbuminemia (84.6%), and mucocutaneous infection (84.6%), all of which were well tolerated. Conclusion The combination of docetaxel and trastuzumab demonstrated a favorable clinical effect and acceptable tolerability, which makes it a good treatment option for HER2-positive metastatic EMPD (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: UMIN000021311, jRCTs031180073). Abstract

PurposeOlder cancer survivors are a vulnerable population due to an increased risk for chronic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease) compounded with treatment late-effects and declines in physical functioning. Therefore, interventions that reduce chronic disease risk factors (i.e., blood pressure, chronic inflammation, and cortisol) are important in this population. Tai chi chih (TCC) is a mind-body exercise associated with reductions in chronic disease risk factors, but has not been examined with older cancer survivors. In a feasibility randomized controlled trial of TCC, we examined secondary outcomes of blood pressure, salivary cortisol, and inflammatory cytokines (interleukin (IL)-6, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-10, IL-4) due to their implications in chronic diseases.MethodsSixty-three senior female cancer survivors (M age = 67 years, SD = 7.15) with physical functioning limitations (SF-12 physical functioning ≤80 or role-physical ≤72) were randomized to 12-weeks (60-min, three times a week) of TCC or Health Education control (HEC) classes. Resting blood pressure, 1-day salivary cortisol samples, and fasting plasma samples for cytokine multiplex assays were collected at baseline and 1-week post-intervention.ResultsControlling for baseline values, the TCC group had significantly lower systolic blood pressure (SBP, p = 0.002) and cortisol area-under-curve (AUC, p = 0.02) at post-intervention than the HEC group. There was no intervention effect on inflammatory cytokines (p's > 0.05).ConclusionsThis TCC feasibility trial was associated with significant reductions in SBP and cortisol AUC in senior female cancer survivors. Larger, definitive trials are needed to confirm these findings.Implications for cancer survivorsSenior survivors' have an increased risk for chronic diseases; however, TCC interventions may help reduce associated risk factors.

Abstract

To summarize the current therapies for skin cancers, the Japanese Skin Cancer Society issued the first guidelines for skin cancers, including melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and extramammary Paget's disease, in 2007. These guidelines were revised in 2015. Herein, we present the English version of the 2021 edition of the Japanese clinical guidelines for BCC. In the latest edition, all procedures were performed according to the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation systems. The clinical questions that could not be answered were selected for further analysis. A comprehensive literature search, systematic review, and recommendations for each clinical question were determined by a multidisciplinary expert panel comprising dermatologists, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and a pathologist. Surgical resection is the gold‐standard therapy of BCC. Radiotherapy or topical treatments, other than surgical resection, have been used in some cases. Patients with unresectable or metastatic BCC require systemic therapy. Novel agents, such as immune response modifiers or hedgehog pathway inhibitors, are emerging worldwide for the treatment of BCC. Based on these viewpoints, four relevant clinical questions regarding, surgical resection, radiotherapy, topical treatment, and systemic therapy, were raised in this report that aims to help clinicians select suitable therapies for their patients.
