When the velocity shear between the two plasmas separated by Earth's magnetopause is locally super-Alfvénic, the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability can develop. A crucial role is played by the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation, which can stabilize the velocity shear. Although, in a linear regime, the instability threshold is equally satisfied during both northward and southward IMF orientations, in situ measurements show that KH instability is preferentially excited during the northward IMF orientation. We investigate this different behavior by means of a mixing parameter which we apply to two KH events to identify both boundaries and the center of waves/vortices. During the northward orientation, the waves/vortex boundaries have stronger electrons than ions mixing, while the opposite is observed at their center. During the southward orientation, instead, particle mixing is observed predominantly at the boundaries. In addition, stronger local ion and electron non-thermal features are observed during the northward than the southward IMF orientation. Specifically, ion distribution functions are more distorted, due to field-aligned beams, and electrons have a larger temperature anisotropy during the northward than the southward IMF orientation. The observed kinetic features provide an insight into both local and remote processes that affect the evolution of KH structures.

We present observations in Earth's magnetotail by the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft that are consistent with magnetic field annihilation, rather than magnetic topology change, causing fast magnetic-to-electron energy conversion in an electron-scale current sheet. Multi-spacecraft analysis for the magnetic field reconstruction shows that an electron-scale magnetic island was embedded in the observed electron diffusion region (EDR), suggesting an elongated shape of the EDR. Evidence for the annihilation was revealed in the form of the island growing at a rate much lower than expected for the standard X-type geometry of the EDR, which indicates that magnetic flux injected into the EDR was not ejected from the X-point or accumulated in the island, but was dissipated in the EDR. This energy conversion process is in contrast to that in the standard EDR of a reconnecting current sheet where the energy of antiparallel magnetic fields is mostly converted to electron bulk-flow energy. Fully kinetic simulation also demonstrates that an elongated EDR is subject to the formation of electron-scale magnetic islands in which fast but transient annihilation can occur. Consistent with the observations and simulation, theoretical analysis shows that fast magnetic diffusion can occur in an elongated EDR in the presence of nongyrotropic electron effects. We suggest that the annihilation in elongated EDRs may contribute to the dissipation of magnetic energy in a turbulent collisionless plasma.

We report a unique conjugate observation of fast flows and associated current sheet disturbances in the near-Earth magnetotail by MMS (Magnetospheric Multiscale) and Cluster preceding a positive bay onset of a small substorm at similar to 14:10 UT, September 8, 2018. MMS and Cluster were located both at X similar to -14 R-E. A dipolarization front (DF) of a localized fast flow was detected by Cluster and MMS, separated in the dawn-dusk direction by similar to 4 R-E,R- almost simultaneously. Adiabatic electron acceleration signatures revealed from the comparison of the energy spectra confirm that both spacecraft encounter the same DF. We analyzed the change in the current sheet structure based on multi-scale multi-point data analysis. The current sheet thickened during the passage of DF, yet, temporally thinned subsequently associated with another flow enhancement centered more on the dawnward side of the initial flow. MMS and Cluster observed intense perpendicular and parallel current in the off-equatorial region mainly during this interval of the current sheet thinning. Maximum field-aligned currents both at MMS and Cluster are directed tailward. Detailed analysis of MMS data showed that the intense field-aligned currents consisted of multiple small-scale intense current layers accompanied by enhanced Hall-currents in the dawn-dusk flow-shear region. We suggest that the current sheet thinning is related to the flow bouncing process and/or to the expansion/activation of reconnection. Based on these mesoscale and small-scale multipoint observations, 3D evolution of the flow and current-sheet disturbances was inferred preceding the development of a substorm current wedge.

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) at Earth's magnetopause and associated turbulence are suggested to play a role in the transport of mass and momentum from the solar wind into Earth's magnetosphere. We investigate electromagnetic turbulence observed in Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices encountered at the dusk flank magnetopause by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft under northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions in order to reveal its generation process, mode properties, and role. A comparison with another MMS event at the dayside magnetopause with reconnection but no KHI signatures under a similar IMF condition indicates that while high-latitude magnetopause reconnection excites a modest level of turbulence in the dayside low-latitude boundary layer, the KHI further amplifies the turbulence, leading to magnetic energy spectra with a power law index -5/3 at magnetohydrodynamic scales even in its early nonlinear phase. The mode of the electromagnetic turbulence is analyzed with a single-spacecraft method based on Ampere's law, developed by Bellan (2016, https://doi.org/10.1002/2016JA022827), for estimating wave vectors as a function of spacecraft frame frequency. The results suggest that the turbulence does not consist of propagating normal-mode waves but is due to interlaced magnetic flux tubes advected by plasma flows in the vortices. The turbulence at sub-ion scales in the early nonlinear phase of the KHI may not be the cause of the plasma transport across the magnetopause but rather a consequence of three-dimensional vortex-induced reconnection, the process that can cause an efficient transport by producing tangled reconnected field lines. On 5 May 2017, MMS observed a crater-type flux rope on the dawnside tailward magnetopause with fluctuations. The boundary-normal analysis shows that the fluctuations can be attributed to nonlinear Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) waves. Reconnection signatures such as flow reversals and Joule dissipation were identified at the leading and trailing edges of the flux rope. In particular, strong northward electron jets observed at the trailing edge indicated midlatitude reconnection associated with the 3-D structure of the KH vortex. The scale size of the flux rope, together with reconnection signatures, strongly supports the interpretation that the flux rope was generated locally by KH vortex-induced reconnection. The center of the flux rope also displayed signatures of guide-field reconnection (out-of-plane electron jets, parallel electron heating, and Joule dissipation). These signatures indicate that an interface between two interlinked flux tubes was undergoing interaction, causing a local magnetic depression, resulting in an M-shaped crater flux rope, as supported by reconstruction.

We present results from the reconstruction of the electron diffusion region of magnetotail reconnection observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft on 11 July 2017. In the event, the conditions were suited for the reconstruction technique, developed by Sonnerup et al. (2016, https://doi.org/10.1002/2016JA022430), that produces magnetic field and electron streamline maps based on a two-dimensional, time-independent, inertialess form of electron magnetohydrodynamic equation, assuming an approximately symmetric current sheet and negligible guide magnetic field. For such a two-dimensional and steady structure, the X line orientation can be estimated from a method based on Ampere's law using single-spacecraft measurements of the magnetic field and electric current density. Our reconstruction results indicate that although the X point was not captured inside its tetrahedron, MMS approached the X point as close as one electron inertial length similar to 27 km. The opening angle of the recovered separatrix field line, combined with theory, suggests that the dimensionless reconnection rate was 0.17, which is consistent with the measured reconnection electric field 2-4 mV/m. The stagnation point of the reconstructed electron flow is shifted earthward of the X point by similar to 90 km, one possible interpretation of which is discussed. The energy conversion rate j . E' in the electron frame tends to be higher near the stagnation point, consistent with earlier observations and simulations, and is not correlated with the amplitude of broadband electrostatic waves observed in the upper-hybrid frequency range. The latter suggests that the waves did not contribute to energy dissipation in this particular electron diffusion region.
